Upapada Lagna is a concept in Vedic astrology from which one could determine one's marriage life. It is also used to determine the longevity of marriage.

Even the number of children can be predicted from upapada Lagna, but these may not hold true in practice. So mainly it can be used to assess relationships, their quality, possibility of affairs and happiness in marriage.

There is a lot of controversy over how it should be calculated but I prefer the tried and tested calculation of using the 12th house ruler. It is basically calculated using your 12th house ruler placement.

If 12th lord is in 1st house, your Upapada Lagna is 2nd house.

If 12th lord is in 2nd house, your Upapada Lagna is 4th house.

If 12th lord is in 3rd house, your Upapada Lagna is 3rd house.

If 12th lord is in 4th house, your Upapada Lagna is 8th house.

If 12th lord is in 5th house, your Upapaga Lagna is 10th house.

If 12th lord is in 6th house, your Upapada Lagna is 9th house.

If 12th lord is in 7th house, your Upapada Lagna is 2nd house.

If 12th lord is in 8th house your Upapada Lagna is 4th house.

If 12th lord is in 9th house, your Upapada Lagna is 3rd house.

If 12th lord is in 10th house, your Upapada Lagna is 8th house.

If 12th lord is in 11th house, your Upapada Lagna is 10th house.

If 12th lord is in 12th house, your Upapada Lagna is 9th house.

Now that you know your upapada Lagna what to do with it? Well, many things can be seen. If there are malefic planets on the upapada Lagna or in 2nd or 7th house from it, then these planets can disturb the marriage life.

Say your upapada Lagna is in 10th house and Mercury is in 4th house, then relatives of spouse could cause obstacles in your relationships and marriage. You can extend the principle to other houses.

If Upapada Lagna lord itself is afflicted, it can delay marriage or cause divorces. Say Upapada is in Taurus and Venus is with Rahu.

Small Tip: Transit of Jupiter over upapada or 2nd house from upapda or trine to that 2nd house from Upapada can get you married. Example Upapada is in 9th house, then transit of Jupiter in 9th, 10th, 2nd and 6th house can bring marriage.

Debilitated planets or Rahu or Ketu in 2nd house from Upapada can lead to affairs or termination of marriage.

Upapada in Taurus can be difficult because 2nd from UL is Gemini and can cause multiple marriages.

Upapada Lagna in 10th house can mean marriage to a significantly higher status person.

benefics in Upapada Lagna or aspecting UL can lead to a fruitful marriage. Say Pisces is UL and Jupiter is in Pisces aspected by Moon in Virgo.

Locate the 12th house lord.

You're going to count how many houses away the 12th house lord is from the 12th house.

For example, in my natal sidereal chart, the 12th house is ruled by Cancer. The Moon rules Cancer. The Moon is located in the 2nd house. Starting my count from the 12th house, the Moon is 3 houses away.

However many houses away the 12th house lord is, you will then count that many houses away from wherever the 12th house lord is located.

For example, my 12th house lord is in the 2nd house, 3 houses away from the 12th house. I begin my count from the 2nd house and count 3 houses away where I land on the 4th house in Scorpio: this is my Upapada Lagna.

There is one exception to this rule!

If the 12th house lord is in the 12th house OR is located directly across from the 12th house in the 6th, you will instead simply count 10 houses away from the 12th house, which will always end up being the 9th house. If this happens in your natal chart, then the 9th house and whatever sign is there will be your Upapada Lagna.

The house next to your Upapada Lagna is just as important because it will tell you about the longevity of the marriage/relationship.

If the house next to your Upapada Lagna has a malefic planet or placement, such as Rahu aka North Node, Ketu aka South Node, Mars or Saturn, this is an indication of possible divorce.

I can attest to this, because in my tropical natal chart my Upapada Lagna is in the 9th house of Taurus. The house next to my Upapada Lagna has the North Node. My first marriage ended in divorce.

Luckily I have indicators in both my tropical and sidereal natal charts that I will have a second marriage and in my sidereal natal chart the house next to my Upapada Lagna has benefic planets Venus, Jupiter and Mercury, which is great!

I don't know about anyone else but I've found that my tropical natal chart has made accurate predictions for the first half of my life and that my sidereal natal chart is making accurate predictions for the second half of my life.

My upapada lagna is in the 9H house in Taurus (my sun sign), in my 8th house it is NN, I saw that this could be indicative of divorce from the first marriage. But in my 7th house is Venus and in my 8th house there is also mercury, I saw that this is good. But NN is still there, so I don't know if it is still an indicator of a divorce. I would like your opinion, I really like your observations 😅💗

Hello can you tell me what upapada lagna in 9th mean when 9th lord is exalted but 10th lord is debilitated and both lords conjunct in kendra.

Since 9th and 10th house lords are conjunct, and one is exalted and one debilitated, it will create a neech bhang raj yoga, thus the debilitated planet having it's debilitation cancelled due to the support from exalted planet. That is a good combination especially for your ambitions, especially in kendra houses.

However, upapada lagna relates to your marriage and partnerships. Your partner may be very driven, ambitious and take charge, and generally it's good to have upapada lagna in 1st, 5th or 9th for your relationship. Since the 9th house is also linked to marriage, it bodes well for you. Sometimes your spouses ventures may take them away from you, but ultimately the partnership would be stable, at worst it could be delayed if Saturn is involved somehow.

7th House Notes

💞1st ruler in 7th means you will control your partner while 7th ruler in 1st means partners will control you.

I stumbled across this discovery a few months ago in my current solar return chart and realized that it showed up in previous solar returns from years when I began a new romantic relationship: the Upapada Lagna fell into the same house that had the asteroid Union! This only occurred in the solar returns of the years I began a new romantic relationship.

What you're going to do is check for the Upapada Lagna in your solar return chart. Upapada Lagna is a Vedic astrology method that tells you about your future spouse/life partner. This method is meant to be used in the natal chart but I discovered it also works in the solar return.

I'm using an old solar return chart from 2011 when I began a significant romantic relationship as an example.

To find the Upapada Lagna, you're going to start at the 12th house and count how many houses away the lord of the 12th house is.

For example, in my 2011 solar return chart, Cancer is in the 12th house. The lord of Cancer is the Moon, which is in the 2nd house = 12th house lord is 3 houses away.

You're then going to count however many houses away your 12th house lord is starting from the house the 12th house lord is placed. In my 2011 solar return, I count 3 houses away from the 12th house lord located in the 2nd house and end up at the 4th house in Scorpio, which happens to have the asteroid Union.

SOME EXCEPTIONS ON FINDING THE UPAPADA LAGNA:

If the Lord of the 12th house is IN the 12th house or is directly across from it in the 6th house, then you must automatically count 10 houses away from the 12th, which will bring you to the 9th house. The 9th house will be considered the Upapada Lagna and if the asteroid Union also happens to be there in your solar return, then it's very likely you'll end up in a new romantic relationship that year.

If the 12th house has dual rulers, such as Aquarius, Scorpio and Pisces, then use the above instructions for each planet and see if the Upapada Lagna for either planet ends up in the same house as the asteroid Union.

*Check your solar return in both Tropical and Sidereal format! I found that this placement will sometimes show up in one but not both charts.*

For example, if 7th house or Lord is associated with 8th house or 12th house or their lord it can give extramarital affair also. How to calculate the Upapada

Suppose a person is born with Aries Lagna and his 12th Lord Jupiter is placed in Cancer. From 12th house Pisces to cancer, the distance is of 5 Sign. So we will add 5 sign from Cancer and we will reach Scorpio Sign. Scorpio will be the Upapada Lagna for this native.

The second House from Upapada Lagna is very important for the Longevity of the Marriage. If there is Malefic Influence in the second house from Upapada Lagna, there is a possibility of breaking the marriage and having a second marriage in astrology.

We have to see the Navamsa also when considering Marriage prospect. Navamsa Lagna, its lord and 7th house and 7th lord has to be seen. If there is an affliction to the 7th house in Navamsa, there is a high chance of breaking the first marriage. Like if Rahu-Ketu is placed in the 1-7 house of Navamsa, the chances of divorce increases to a great extent.

Planets Which can give Divorce and separation in Astrology

Without Divorce or separation from the first marriage, we cannot go-ahead for a second marriage in astrology. The main agents of Divorce or separation in astrology are Mars, Rahu, Sun and Saturn. Saturn is least malefic in case of Separation. Saturn gives pain and suffering but does not allow a person to break or come out of the relation. If Mars, Rahu or Sun is in 8th house it is a strong indication Separation. Presence of Malefic Planet like Sun and Rahu is Very detrimental for Marital Happiness. Some people will be surprised to see the name of the Sun. But yes, Sun is very much detrimental for Marital Happiness. But I want to share my view with you that a Proper Kundli Matching can reduce the chances of divorce or separation.

The significator for Marriage Venus must be afflicted otherwise a strong Venus can save a marriage.

Planetary combinations for Divorce

Now let’s understand some principles for Divorce and separation in Astrology.

6th house is the House of Enemy, struggle and Obstacles. It is also the 12th house or Loss of Marriage. 8th house is the house of hindrances and Maraka for 7th house. So when 6th lord and 8th lord is present in 7th house, it is a bad Yoga for marital Happiness.

Malefic Like Rahu, Mars and Sun is placed in 7th house can indicate divorce. Mars in 7th house also creates Manglik dosh in the Kundli. If the sun is placed in the 7th house, there can be ego clash among the partners.

If the 7th Lord is Debilitated or afflicted or retrograde it also gives an indication of Bad marriage.

The second House from Upapada Lagna is afflicted by Malefic Planets or debilitated planets can also harm Marital happiness and bring an end to the marriage.

When the 7th house in Navamsa is afflicted by Malefics like Saturn, Rahu/Ketu, Mars etc the chances of divorce is very high.

Second Marriage in Astrology

Now as we have understood the combination of divorce in astrology, we can check for second marriage in Horoscope. The second is marriage is seen from the 2nd house of Horoscope. 8th house shows Longevity. So 8th house from 7th house i.e. 2nd house will indicate the second marriage in astrology. For third marriage, we have to consider the 8th house from 2nd i.e. 9th house from Lagna. So we need to see the condition of 2nd house and its lord in the Rashi chart as well as in the Navamsa chart. Some people consider 9th house as the house of second marriage in astrology because 9th is the 3rd from 7th. They consider the second spouse to be the sibling of your first spouse. Some people also advice to use 11th house like the house of second marriage astrology. But Eminent Astrologer Mr.Sanjay Rath is of the opinion that 2nd house should be used for second marriage and I have also found it correct in case of Practical example.
