I’ve played a lot of demos in the last year. They’ve earned a special place in my heart for being an accessible way to play games that I wouldn’t have played otherwise. I’ve been very impressed throughout the year by demos that exude quality.
Here are some of my top picks in no particular order!
Tumblr media
Unavowed: This is an urban fantasy point and click adventure game with a great story! While I knew of this game beforehand due to watching a playthrough of it a few years back, I never watched the full thing. I bought and played through the full game and I highly recommend it!
Tumblr media
In Stars And Time: This is an RPG about being stuck in a time loop! I love the party members, combat mechanics, and setting! I bought the full game and I’m excited to play it!
Tumblr media
Tinykin: This is a platformer where you crash land on a strange planet and try to get back home with the help of cute creatures called Tinykin! This gives off Pikmin vibes while still being unique. The controls feel wonderful and the setting is fun and beautiful! It’s also a long demo, it took me a few hours to fully complete it. This is another game that I bought that I’m excited to play!
Tumblr media
Dungeons & Degenerate Gamblers: This is a roguelike deckbuilder that’s a nice twist on blackjack! I actually learned how to play blackjack for this game. I played it months ago and it was a fun romp! I don’t usually care for deckbuilder games but this one impressed me. The devs are updating the demo consistently and I should play it again soon.
Tumblr media
AI: The Somnium Files (This is a sci-fi murder mystery game! This was the first demo that truly amazed me and showed me what a demo could be. It showed off the game very well and I bought the full game when it went on sale. This is yet another game that I bought that I’m excited to play!)
I’m going to play some demos in this year’s Steam Next Fest. I’ll talk about the demos I liked once the event is over.

Friendly reminder that if you want to play a game that has magic, great writing, diverse characters, and isn’t based on a franchise created by a terrible person while also supporting a Jewish dev, Unavowed is right there.

A surprise NaNoWriMo entrant!
I haven't done NaNoWriMo at all for the past few years because I have consistently had several fanfiction projects going at once and haven't wanted to drop any of them for a month. This year is no different - I have so many WIPs and things I want to write, probably about ten of them or perhaps closer to fifteen, which as you can imagine is overwhelming to the point where I don't know what to prioritize.
So then why prioritize any of them? Why not give all of my WIPs an equal amount of attention, rotating between them after every couple hundred words, and see how much progress I can make in a month? And why not make use of this event I have neglected for so long to do it?
So here we are. I wasn't expecting to do NaNo this year but on the very first day I have decided to give it a go, with a cumulative goal of 50,000 words divided between several projects. Not the most traditional way of going about it, but I'm excited for it anyway. I think that chunking it up by doing only 100 or 200 words at one time on one project before moving on to the next will actually help quite a lot.
Most of the projects are for my main fandom, Zero Escape, and I also have a hefty and ambitious Danganronpa anthology fic that's been updating regularly for the past year. But I also have several one-off ideas (several of them smutty a-heem-heem) I've been wanting to write for other fandoms, including: Scarlet Hollow, The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, Yuppie Psycho, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow, Unavowed, and Going Under. If any projects happen to be finished during the course of this month, I hope to post them as I go!

Yu-Gi-Oh, RWBY, Higurashi no naku koro ni, the Blackwell series and Unavowed just hit different, like what if the ghost haunting you becomes your found family
And on one hand you're like "oh god this sucks bc now i have to deal with all supernatural bullshit" but on the other hand "you know, this ain't so bad, i found a friend for life and many other people through them, and now i have a reason to stay and protect them" which 👌👌👌👌

since you mentioned, unavowed was really SO good. hope we get more games in that universe from them. wadjet eye games are pretty much all good and in their latest game - excavation of hob's barrow, Thomasina (main character) is voiced by Karlach's VA and Halsin's VA voices the gnome character (the range and the duality of a man huh :D)
It really was!! Not only the story was fun, but the surprise ending? Amazing. I wish there was a sequel. In general I love wadjet eye games too. The only one I did not enjoy was "A golden wake", but I played Technobabylon, Unavowed, Primordia, Gemini Rue and the Blackwell series of games and I adored them.
I really need to play Shardlight, The Excavation of Hob's Barrow and especially Old Skies because I love time travel shenanigans.

Unavowed is one of the best click and point adventure games I’ve played since Return to Monkey Island. For one whole year you were controlled by a powerful demon, but a secret organization known as the Unavowed expelled it from your body. You are the most wanted criminal in the city, but the Unavowed promise to help you get revenge on the demon that possessed you if you work for them. The game’s universe is so interesting as they take mythical monsters and plop them into a modern day city. Spirits, forest creatures, sea monsters, genies, and much more. Everytime you depart on a mission you can choose two of four companions, and this means every mission and puzzle had to be designed so that any combination of characters can work. The companions themselves are all very interesting, have unique backstories, occasionally have fun banters, and you relate to them as the plot thickens. The pixelart is gorgeous and the main story just gets more engaging as you discover more. Unavowed is a masterpiece of a click and point and it’s surprising more people haven’t heard about it. Here’s a link to my full review of Unavowed.

A couple more drawings! I’ve decided to focus more on line art than color - I was convinced before that matching color schemes were the only way to make clear which character a drawing was supposed to be of, but I think I’m actually better at making characters recognizable than I thought I was.
This is a crossover with the excellent point-and-click game Unavowed, with Junpei and Quark as medium Logan Brown and his ghost companion KayKay, and Clover as ex-muse Calliope.

Hey I finally found the template for this!
A few clarifications:
I know it’s inaccurate to call Omori a villain. I just really like the general concept of “manifestation of mental illness as antagonist.”
I AM including Zero Time Dilemma under the Zero Escape “Best Story” umbrella, even though it just shows The Nonary Games there. I love ZTD, fight me.
I DON’T ACTUALLY HATE PORTAL I needed something to put there and as objectively good as I can see Portal is, it’s just not for me.
