Brazil’s Lula digs heels on Ukraine war during Iberian trip

President’s comments highlight EU difficulty in convincing global south to hold Russia accountable for invasion

Brazil’s president is touring the Iberian peninsula in an attempt to boost ties with the EU, but his persistent claims that both Russia and Ukraine are responsible for the ongoing war highlight the bloc’s difficulty in winning over the global south.

During his stay in Portugal, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva said that Ukraine “does not want to stop” the war and insisted peace talks should begin, even though Moscow continues its missile attacks on civilian targets and Russian troops are still occupying parts of Ukraine.

Lula’s rhetoric on the war, which the US earlier condemned as “parroting Russian and Chinese propaganda”, has underscored the challenge facing the EU and its allies at it struggles to build a global coalition seeking to hold Russia accountable for its invasion of Ukraine, and exposed its lack of political influence over swaths of the non-western world.

While Lula made clear that he condemned the invasion of a sovereign state, he did not disavow comments made last week in the United Arab Emirates that Russia and Ukraine bore joint responsibility and that the US and EU were “contributing” to the conflict.

“We are not in favour of war. We want peace,” Lula said in Lisbon on Saturday alongside Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, Portugal’s president. In the case of the ongoing conflict, Lula added: “Russia does not want to stop and Ukraine does not want to stop. And if you don’t talk about peace, you are contributing to war.”

The global response to the war in Ukraine has provided a startling wake-up call to EU diplomats who have failed to convince major nations in Latin America, Africa and south-east Asia to oppose Moscow’s invasion.

Once condemned by Ukrainian officials and imprisoned for sadistic torture and the rape of minors, leaders of the notorious Tornado Battalion are free under Volodymyr Zelensky’s orders.

After banning virtually his entire political opposition, publishing a blacklist of foreign journalists and academics accused of advancing “Russian propaganda,” and ramming through a law exempting 70% of Ukrainians from workplace protections, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenksy has freed from prison fascist militants convicted of some of the most heinous crimes the country has seen since World War II. 

According to a July 11 report in Ukrainian media, Ruslan Onishenko, commander of the now-disbanded Tornado Battalion, was freed as part of President Zelensky’s scheme to release prisoners with combat experience. Along with an unwavering commitment to fascism, Onishenko is known as a psychopathic sadist who was involved in sexually assaulting children, brutally torturing prisoners, and murder.

Onishenko’s release follows a February 27 order by Zelensky to free other convicted former Tornado members like Danil “Mujahed” Lyashuk, a fanatic from Belarus who has openly emulated ISIS and boasted of torturing captives for sheer enjoyment. According to Zelensky‘s decree, prisoners with combat experience would be allowed to “compensate for their guilt” by fighting in the “hottest spots.”

Back in 2015, when the Ukrainian state provided official support to his Tornado Battalion, Onishenko texted two fellow “patriots,” Voldomor and Svetlana Savichuk, propositioning Svetlana Savichuk to “suck my cock in front of the [toddler] children.” (See screenshots of the conversation here). He also asked Savichuk to perform lewd acts on her children for his viewing pleasure. Despite the magnitude of his crimes, which included torture, murder, rape – including that of children – kidnapping, amputation, and more, Onishenko was sentenced to a mere 11 years in prison on April 11, 2017.  

Now, after serving just five years of his sentence, the convicted predator has been freed by a president hailed by  Western patrons as a defender of democracy.

There is the helpful information on how to keep yourself and your family safe from bombing and at war overall, links to the most important news sources right now, and a bunch of help initiatives (army help, medical and humanitarian aid, help with relocation, and job, psychological aid, pets and animal aid, women, kids, and LGBT aids also)   – it also must be useful for people who not only need help but also want to help the country and its people.

2. BELARUS. Belarus has been under the regime for a long time, but in the last 2 years after protesting, it got the way worse. At this block you can find the information about how to be safe in this country right now and not let your sons/brothers/fathers go to war, all non-gov news sources that still exist, the ways and help on how to leave the country if you are under repressions and initiatives that help protesters.

3. RUSSIA. Here’s some information on how to talk with your family members/friends who believe in Putin’s gov-propaganda, how to be safe at protests, the list of anti-war movements, the information on how to not go to war if you are a soldier or in a group of people who are under conscription rules and list of legal initiatives that can help you if you’ve got caught in hands of the regime. Also, there’s a list of ways you can help Ukrainians if you are in Russia (as it’s illegal to do right now in the country).

I knew it, this man is dying hence why he is so aggressive attacking Ukraine and basically not only destroying Ukraine but also his own nation. Once he got Ukraine, he wouldn't stop until he got all of Eastern Europe under his control, Putin is like a very twisted version of Gatsby, he was too young and didn't have power to take USSR before it collapse and now he's too old and sick to be the dictator of Eastern Europe.

He can't let go of the fact that he loses the opportunity to rule over USSR

He knew that he's dying hence why he became so desperate to take over Eastern Europe and challenge the west. That's why I thought his invasion is so rushed, poorly planned and out of character for a man who fancied himself as this calculated and stoic bond villain of Russia who trolled the west and basically do whatever he wanted. He became frantic and his facade that's the Kremlin has been trying to maintain for decades finally cracked...
