PEOPLE IN THE UK - Ceasefire Vote 21st Feb 2024
Tumblr media
Taken from the PSC facebook page for my area:
"On 21st February there will be a Ceasefire vote in parliament on a Motion by the SNP. PSC is calling for a physical lobby of Parliament, preceded by an avalanche of emails and tweets."
The least you can do is WRITE AND EMAIL your MP urging them to vote in favour of an immediate ceasefire. Writing to your MP is easy and simple - find their contact details on the UK Gov website and follow the advice.
You don't need to be a wordsmith, it's vital you make your voice heard! Your letter must contain the following things:
1: The issue you want addressing (Ceasefire in Gaza)
2: Why it's important to you (death toll, genocide, UK complicity, risk of regional war)
3: What you want them to do (vote for the ceasefire on February 21st!)
If you don't know how to format a letter, there's loads of guides online, I used Crisis UK's guide to writing to your MP.
Now crack on! And please share.

On March 30th, 1979, BBC News reported:
"...Shadow Northern Ireland Secretary Airey Neave has been killed by a car bomb as he left the House of Commons car park. The bomb, said to be highly sophisticated, exploded as Mr Neave began driving up the exit ramp…So far two groups, the Provisional IRA and the Irish National Liberation Army, have claimed they carried out the killing…"
Airey Neave suffered catastrophic injuries and subsequently died at Westminster Hospital. The assassination coincided with the beginning of the general election campaign, and he was set to be Northern Ireland Secretary in the event of a Tory win. He was known as a proponent for using strong military force against Irish republican paramilitaries. The INLA (who it appears were the real culprits), in their justification, described this as 'rabid militarist calls for more repression against the Irish people'.
Margaret Thatcher, Tory Opposition Leader, described Airey Neave as 'one of freedom's warriors. Courageous, staunch, true. He lived for his beliefs and now he has died for them'.
Labour Prime Minister (although not for long), Jim Callaghan, promised that 'No effort will be spared to bring the murderers to justice and to rid the United Kingdom of the scourge of terrorism'.
Airey Neave was a decorated World War Two veteran (MC and DSO) who had achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was the first British officer to escape from Colditz Castle.
In April 2019, The Express and other media reported that the investigation into the assassination would be reopened, with focus on a person of interest named Harry Flynn who’d been previously identified as the INLA’s chief of staff. According to the Belfast Telegraph, Britain had attempted to extradite Flynn from France in 1987 where he was serving five years for gun running, but 'failed as his crime was deemed political'.
As of 2019, according to reports, Flynn was aged 65 and ran a pub in Mallorca. There doesn’t appear to be any further reporting on this, so we can assume the case is still open.

https://youtu.be/eMh0FHUHvnA If you don't have time to watch the video, what's currently happening in the UK (and many other places) is a refusal to assist any wildlife rehabilitation efforts (both public and private) in reintroducing keystone (regulatory) species like beavers, wolves and elks in the habitats where they have gone locally extinct. This means that many of their functions have to be replaced with human labor, meaning delays, reduction in scope and budgetary deficits. We lack the ability to organize what we see fit to be done, the ability to account for all variables and the decisiveness to implement what few things do pass those 2 checks. Every day we neglect to do what we can to help any habitat help itself, we add to our ignorance, deficits and window of time. Not that gocernments can be trusted to do much in a helpful or speedy manner, but passing the petition at least gives a fighting chance to the most obvious solutions.

PM Rishi Sunak makes 'insensitive' comment on transgender women, whilst the mother of 16-year-old murdered trans teen Brianna Ghey attends Parliament
Recent responses to the PM's remarks have called for him to formally apologise.
During the Prime Minister's Questions this evening, PM Rishi Sunak, whilst highlighting the 'broken promises' of Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, made a crude jibe about transgender women, one that has been met with backlash from the Labour Party, Brianna's father, and the public.
On Wednesday afternoon, Labour Party leader Sir Keir Starmer met with Esther Ghey, mother of 16-year-old Brianna Ghey, a trans teenager who was killed by two other teens in February of last year. Earlier this month, the names of Brianna's killers were released, with the judge of their trial designating transphobia as a motive for Brianna's murder.
In the House of Commons, during a parliamentary session that Brianna's mother was in attendance to, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, made a comment in regards to Sir Keir Starmer's position as Labour leader. Amongst other jibes, listing Starmer's 'broken promises' Sunak said:
"It's a bit rich, (addressing the Speaker) to hear about promises from someone that's broken every single promise he was elected on! I think I counted thirty in the last year. Pensions, planning, periges*, public sector pay. Tuition fees, childcare, second referendums. Defining a woman– although, in fairness, that was only 99% of a U-turn".
Starmer replied by reminding Sunak that Brianna's mother was present, describing him as 'parading as a man of integrity', which was met with calls of 'Shame!' in the chamber. Ater being asked to apologise by another MP, the Prime Minister called Brianna's death an "unspeakable and shocking tragedy", yet did not give any apology for his remark.
Chancellor Jeremy Hunt has claimed that Sunak's comment was 'taken out of context'
Watch the PM's comments and response here.

By: Humanists UK
Published: Dec 6, 2023
The Disestablishment of the Church of England Bill had its first reading in the UK Parliament today. The Bill, if enacted, would disestablish the Church of England and remove the automatic right of bishops to sit in the House of Lords. Humanists UK, which campaigns for a secular state and the separation of church and state, welcomed the Bill.
The Bill, introduced in the House of Lords by Lord Scriven, a member of the All-Party Parliamentary Humanist Group, would remove the Church of England from its position as the official state church. The Bill faced significant opposition, but eventually passed.
The recent British Social Attitudes survey demonstrated how unrepresentative our current system is. Only 12% of people consider themselves Anglican. What’s more, 68% of 18-24 year-olds say they belong to no religion versus 18% saying they are Christian – including only 0.7% saying they are Anglican.
The Church of England was disestablished in Wales in 1920 and there has never been an established church in Northern Ireland, as the Church was disestablished in 1869, before Irish independence. This is one of many archaic policies that still exist in the UK. Arguably, most egregious is the fact that 26 seats in the House of Lords are reserved for bishops of the Church of England. The only other state which has reserved seats for religious officials from a state religion is Iran.
As well as seeking to remove the automatic right for bishops to sit in the House of Lords, the Bill would remove the monarch’s role as Head of the Church of England.
This change will not interfere with the right to freedom of religion or belief. In 2018 Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby said that disestablishment of the Church of England would not be ‘a disaster’ for the Church, and is ‘a decision for parliament and the people’. He also said that ‘I don’t think [disestablishment] would make it easier [for the Church], and I don’t think it would make it more difficult’.
The Bill will now move onto its second reading, though no formal date has yet been set.
Humanists UK Director of Policy and Public Affairs, Kathy Riddick said:
‘Humanists UK welcomes the introduction of this Bill. In a modern, diverse society, it’s crucial to separate religion from state, allowing for genuine equality of all religions and beliefs. Disestablishment would mark a crucial step towards a fairer, secular state, ensuring that public institutions remain neutral and inclusive.’
