How: while on a ‘friendship’ date.
Friendship dates are like a running joke between you two, kind of? Mostly it’s just a fun way for you to relax and unwind, to take a break from the stressful rush of idol life and be yourselves without the heavy expectation of your idol personalities hanging over your head.
Sometimes you’ll invite some friends to tag along, like Mika or Ritsu. Usually though, it’s just you and Arashi.
Normally you would go to a cozy café? But since this is a special occasion, you want to be prepared.
Most likely, you would probably take her to a fancy-ish restaurant (you want it to be as date-like as possible but also not too fancy since you don’t want to overwhelm her! Plus, this was supposed to be a way for you two to unwind in the first place, you don’t want to cause her any undue stress.) and treat her like a proper lady. Pull out a chair for her, compliment her, pay for her food, the works.
At the end, you tell her you have something to say. She’s waiting, looking all concerned and gorgeous.
Ooh boy. Deep breath.

“Ara-chan, I’m in love with you.”
Obviously, she’s very happy when she hears this! All smiles, so excited!
She’s kind of a little insecure that she’s maybe ‘too much’ at times? And it can be off putting to some people?
So when you told her you had something important to say, and you looked so nervous and scared she was kind of worried that it was gonna be something bad?
Like, maybe you wouldn’t want to be friends anymore…
Which would be awful, sure, but she’d understand! Really! She wouldn’t even fault you for it, since she definitely understands growing out of friendships.
But of course, you have to surpass all her expectations. Not even in her wildest fantasies did she imagine something like this.
You, the most gorgeous person she’s ever seen and the love of her goddamn life, telling her that you basically want to spend all of your time with her forever and ever.
Doing things like holding hands and cuddling and kissing? Romantically?

Honestly, you’re just happy to help out. You enjoy spending time with all of them, but especially Nazuna.
(And no, this is not because of your big fat crush on him, it’s just because he’s so sweet and kind you can’t help but enjoy talking to him.)
Mitsuru’s complaining, though good-naturedly, because you vetoed his idea of wearing car-themed outfits for their next Live and Nazuna agreed with you wholeheartedly.
“That’s not fair, nii-chan has to take your side because he’s in love with you!”
I’m sorry, what?
Fucking. What.
You…have no idea how to respond. Because? You were not expecting this?
Nazuna’s frozen in place. Just…
Staring. At you.
Error 404. Nazuna.exe has stopped working.
And you’re a little worried, to be honest.
Nazuna looks like he’s on the verge of either tears or a mental breakdown and honestly you would not even blame him. His face is flushed and blotchy red.
You ask him if he’s okay. He says nothing, which, yeah. Stupid question. Being outed to the person you potentially are in love with is…an awkward situation, to say the least.
You don’t want to stress him out more, but you kind of want to know because if it’s a joke, playing with both of your feelings like this is. So not okay.
You ask him if what Mitsuru says was true.
He looks at you nervously–because if you don’t return his feelings that’s fine but if this messes up your friendship beyond repair he has no idea what he would do–and asks what you would do if he said yes.
You just giggle, relieved. It seems too good to be true, but you know Nazuna is nothing if not honest, especially with his feelings.
He looks a little apprehensive at first, but your next words seem to assuage whatever fears are plaguing him:
“That’s great because I love you too, silly!”
☆—SAKUMA RITSU
Who confesses first: Ritsu! Kind of…
How: before he falls asleep.
You and Ritsu are relaxing in the garden. His head is on your lap and you're casually playing with his hair as you scroll through Whole Hands.
You're smiling at the barrage of online game notifications Sazanami-senpai and Makoto-kun have sent you when Ritsu tugs on your sleeve to get your attention.
You ignore him, because he can get a bit possessive at times. It’s not even a romantic thing, he just has a tendency to gatekeep the things–and people!–he cares about. It’s cute, but it can also be pretty annoying, especially when you want to spend time with other people who aren’t Ritsu, so you’ve had to get proficient in the art of ignoring him lest you fall prey to his whims.
He doesn’t give up, though.
He keeps whining and pouting, and it’s really adorable. He’s like a little grumpy, needy kitten, but you must stay focused!
Finally, he seems to come to some sort of solution because he snuggles closer into your stomach and smiles deviously at you.
“Hey~ I’m in love with you.”
You don’t register it at first–you’re distracted by the adorable pictures of Daikichi Akehoshi’s spamming in the StarPro groupchat to the despair of both Isara and Midori-kun–but when you do, you’re flabbergasted.
Your screen tumbles from your hands and you’re left gaping unattractively at the boy curled in your lap.
What the everloving fuck?!
You try to shake him awake, because? Confirmation would be appreciated. Did you hear that right? Did he, Sakuma Ritsu of Knights, actually tell you he’s in love with you!?
It seems he’s taking revenge on you for your previous transgressions, because he doesn’t stir, not even when you shake him vigorously.
Ritsu, whyyyy?
But you huff a laugh in the end, because you guess he wouldn’t be your Ritsu if he wasn’t so difficult.
“I’m in love with you too, I guess…”
You don’t notice but he’s wearing a pleased smile after he wakes up, and it stays on his face for a while.
You definitely notice when he plants a kiss on your lips as you drop him off at his dorm. And for the second time that day, you’re left a flustered mess, all because of one stupidly annoying (yet endearing) vampire.
☆—SUOU TSUKASA
Who confesses first: Tsukasa!
How: after a live!
It’s another successful Live, and Tsukasa…he’s just so exhilarated. Like, he’s riding the high of the adrenaline rush and his heart is beating so fucking fast.
And when you come up to him to greet him backstage, you’re all like, you were incredible up there Suou-kun! You looked so cool on the stage, I had so much fun watching you!
And he’s used to compliments from people, of course he is. He’s the leader of Knights, one of the big three of Yumenosaki Academy. This is par for the course for him.
But there’s something different about the way you look at him, eyes sparkling so brightly. His heart begins to race and it’s got nothing to do with the Live.
You’re rambling on about something or the other but he can’t think of anything except how gorgeous you look right now.
And before he knows it, his mouth is opening, seemingly of its own accord.
“You’re beautiful…may I kiss you?”
Cue Leo and Arashi in the background going, “Oooooooooh~”
You’re gaping. Face flushed, arms hanging limp, you’re just. Shocked.
Tsukasa’s blushing too, but he’s still going strong. Hand outstretched, he waits patiently for your brain to reboot.
Of course, you say yes, because who wouldn’t?!
It’s a chaste little peck, just a slight brushing of lips, but when you pull back his face is redder than his hair.
You giggle and ask him if that kiss was enough for him. He flushes even more and begins stammering.
It’s adorable. Obviously, he wants to kiss you more (and you want to kiss him more as well!) but he’s a little too awkward to tell you that, so you decide to take the lead.
“Well, that’s not enough for me. I think we should definitely kiss more!”
He nods rapidly, eyes wide. He’s going to die. Cause of death: overloaded by your absolute fucking adorableness. RIP Suou Tsukasa, you will be missed. We’ll get Leo to write your eulogy.
Only Sena’s timely intervention prevents him from fainting right there and then.
“I’ll be waiting for you, Tsukasa~kun!”
Trips over his own feet when he hears you say his name.
Oh my fucking god.
Leo’s just fucking cackling at this point, while Arashi’s like, wow Tsukasa-chan is such a charmer~!
Poor baby.
He still gets to kiss you lots later, though, so it was worth all the embarrassment in his opinion.

Of course! Now warning I am delirious so this is gonna be something.
I missed the first match, which was Yano and Yoh vs Taguchi and Oleg. Yano and Yoh won which like as they should simply for the vibes.
This was where I turned the stream on, Bishamon vs Great-O-Khan and Newman. This was actually such a fun match. I'm a UE girlie, but always rooting for a Bishamon win!
House of Torture vs Despy, Shota, Tiger Mask and Tomoaki, I'll be honest I checked out during this one and rightfully so cause HoT won 🙄
Just 5 guys vs LIJ, all I have to say is that Tsuji makes the vibes so gay and I appreciate it so much. Just 5 guys took the win and the post match was interesting like Tsuji and Yuya were pulling each other's hair.
I cried my way through Okada vs Tanahashi, so I can't really give much thought about any of the match, but Okada won. It was the perfect send off and I'm genuinely so scared to see where he's gonna end up.
ELP and Hikuleo vs Chase and Kenta. S I G H. I don't even know where to begin like I want to maim Gedo for booking ELP and Leo to lose. Chase having gold in the year of my lord 2024 is just sick work and I demand compensation.
I went stupid during ZSJ vs Bry. I think I blacked out at some point and the wires in my brain caught fire when they started looking like they were fucking. Zack finally got his win back and I am now demanding a threeway with ZSJ, Bry, and Nigel!!
United Empire vs Bullet Club, everyone looked stupid fine. Will made me cry in his entrance. This match was pure intensity there were times I genuinely felt sick. Will and Drilla should not be allowed to blade, they gush like faucets. I think everyone was highlighted perfectly in this match. Everyone in UE had their time to shine, but BC were complete beasts in this. It was an EPIC match and one of the best recent cagematches in my opinion. Bullet Club took the win and came out looking exactly how they should now that they are the most dominant faction. Will broke down in his post match and I cried like a baby.

Your analysis is so great and inspires me to write Chair fanfic! I was wondering what kind of parents you think they'd be? I know people think since Blair and Chuck are not exactly the most warm and nurturing people and lead busy lives they'd have a nanny raise their kid for the most part, but I think they'd be pretty involved parents? Maybe I just want to think that! I feel like Blair would be super structured, organized, rule-oriented etc who keeps the family functioning beautifully while Chuck is more chaotic and the kind of dad who sneaks the kids sugary snacks lol. I'm also curious how you think they'd deal with a kid who (gasp) isn't popular and doesn't care about upper east side social events, debutante balls and so on!
hi!! omg I'm so honoured sksfjksk thank u sm if u post any fic pls tag me I'd love to read it 🫶🏻🫶🏻 ohh I love this question!! I have a lot of feelings about chair as parents lol. I think that actually bc of their individual upbringings they'd be more hands on in terms of parenting as they want to give henry and any other children they have the childhoods that they didn't. ik that they probably would hire a nanny at some point when their children are older, but I believe that they would do all the main parenting themselves for as long as they could (yes even diaper changing and potty training and night feeding). also for chair parenting their kids as babies I think they'd be so enthusiastic about every tiny milestone. like henry rolls over for the first time and they take a hundred videos and are like he's the smartest baby in the whole world!! look at him!! meanwhile baby henry's got no idea what's going on but he's v encouraged.
in terms of their dynamic I think blair would definitely be the more "strict" one in the sense that she's more organised and likes rules like u said and she wants her kids to have structure in their lives. but I do think that she's gentle and loving with them too bc she didn't always get that with her own mother, so she doesn't want her kids to ever feel like she doesn't love them or isn't proud of them. also she's definitely the scarier one when it comes to like parent teacher conferences and stuff everyone thinks it's gonna be chuck but no she's an absolute mama bear. chuck as a dad is so important to me and I think he'd be a kind of soft that ppl never expect. he'd still be like serious about things but definitely more relaxed and the kind of loving father he always wanted. imo for him, like with blair, the most important thing for him is that their children feel supported and loved and that he's present for them. he wants to be there in the big and small ways and he'd definitely be kinda chaotic at times (when henry turns 16 chuck's like if u wanna smoke or drink pls do it around me and uncle nate it'll be safer also we'll show u the good stuff and blair's like no!! we're not encouraging this!! and chuck's like 😏) but so devoted to his children. their kids know they can go to them with anything and they have a much healthier relationship than most ues families.
this is such a fun point so if henry or any of their other children didn't care about ues life or didn't care about being popular I think they'd be surprised but supportive. I can see blair being more surprised and unsure at first than chuck bc she loves tradition and the ues lifestyle (I say as they live in paris sksfjkdk) but I think as long as she knew her child was happy then she'd accept it. she'd definitely try to do things to make them enthuse more but I think eventually chuck would help her realise that their children's happiness is what matters regardless of if they're popular or not or how many events they go to. chuck would be more ok with it bc he wasn't always popular with his peers so I think he'd have a mentality that his children will always have a certain level of fame and notoriety no matter what, so if they change their mind and want to be more involved in ues society then they can reintegrate more easily, it just depends on what they want

i know you love jenny and eric and hate chuck, but i’m really curious what you think about the other main gg characters and why?
Oh I love talking!!!! I love talking so much this is going under a read more bc it got unwieldy
I'm gonna talk about Blair, Serena, Dan, Nate, Vanessa, Rufus, and Lily here, but if there's anyone else you're curious about lmk
(and none of my feelings about the characters are black and white! I do find Chuck Fun To Hate and Jenny and Eric both have moments I pretend not to see. I just have my favorites and least favorite)
Blair
my relationship with Blair is the most complicated. the short answer is that the way she's venerated by fans has really soured me on her. like I'd like her more if everyone else liked her less yk
the longer answer is that I get why people love her. she had this amazing potential to grow as the show went on. I get the urge to pretend her character development stuck and she had a happy ending with Dan (I imagine I'll come back to that when I get there in the rewatch)
but season 6 went back on her character growth and had her go back to being classist and entitled and end up with chuck and I'm not going to pretend that's not canon
and like... ofc I don't think she deserved to end up with chuck (as you said my hatred of him is documented and I do think he'd be a shitty husband post series.) but I do think she deserves some consequences for her actions I'm not going to erase them to give her some happy ending the other characters have a right to be mad at her (this isn't just jenny she was a bitch to everyone at some point but they write it off bc "it's Blair that's how she is" like newsflash bestie we're all insecure most of us aren't terrible people about it)
Serena
I like Serena!! I do!! Blake Lively is charming and charismatic!!!! but she's maybe the worst about the whole Never Learning Never Growing thing most of the characters do which does get on my nerves a bit on a personal level. but more than anything it makes me not that interested in watching 121 episodes about her
I tend to be more interested in characters I can sink my teeth into (which is why I love Jenny's development and hate blair's character regression) but gossip girl is such a plot driven show that doesn't give characters time to feel things (and doesn't think about how they would feel at all.) and I think of all the leads Serena maybe gets that the worst bc there's a lot of things she should be feeling but it's like she doesn't get to (idk if that's a writing thing or a Blake Lively's acting thing (or a combination)) but it makes me not really care. especially bc iirc she'll be less involved in the main plotlines as the show goes on (which is also true for Nate)
Dan
Dan I always find myself becoming less fond of as the series goes on. I didn't find him annoying at the outset the way I know some people do. he's a good big brother and a good match for Serena getting her out of her ues bubble a bit. but the show goes on and he falls in love with Blair less than a year after she banished his sister (and never brings that up to her)
I've never gotten to the point of hating him but in the second to last episode he calls chuck "the best man I've ever known" (he raped your sister!!!!) and I get close
making Dan gossip girl was so bizarre and nonsensical that I'm just gonna say #gaslightgatekeepgirlboss those rich kids deserved it and move on bc I cant examine it seriously or we'll be here all day
Nate
Nate I mostly wish had been fleshed out more. in the early seasons he goes through a lot of really serious shit but his legacy is that the writers didn't know what to do with him after like season 2 so he just dated everyone.
for the most part I like him I just wish he'd gotten more depth in the later seasons
and I say "for the most part" bc he's got this unfortunate habit of looking the other way about how chuck treats women-until it's a woman he cares about. he has this line when he's fighting with chuck in s1 that's like "did you get what you wanted like you did with all those other girls" which makes it sound like he knows Chuck's a rapist and !!!!!!!!!
but that's unfortunately very common behavior in teenage boys. other than that I really do like Nate!!! I like that he looks out for his friends and doesn't send tips to gossip girl!!! I like that in season 1 he tries to write Blair an apology letter and in season 2 he writes a letter to Jenny I think that's really sweet!!!!! Nate's my boy and I wanna give him a hug (and make him stop being friends with that guy)
Vanessa
in canon, Vanessa has these little throwaway details about living with her sister and making socially powerful documentaries and being really well liked at NYU that we just never explore ??? even a little??????? I love Vanessa and she had her dark moments but they were forgivable (and not nearly as bad as anyone else's)
I mostly wish she had been a character in a different show I think is the best way to put it. like I wanna know about her family and her documentaries and her travels!!! but that's not Rich Kids Doing Drama
I was listening to Jessica Szohr's podcast and she said that at a certain point it felt silly that Vanessa kept talking about hating the rich kids but was still always on the upper east side and I think she's right. Vanessa should've been fleshed out more in canon (which maybe would've given her a reason to be in the neighborhood) but also Vanessa should've been the focus of her own show
Rufus
he's not the father of the year that's for sure
in the pilot Jenny says he "makes us go to private school" and I think that theme of attending Constance St Jude's for your education holds true but he doesn't seem to understand the reality of that?? there's this theme early on that "Dan doesn't have friends so why does Jenny need them" which 1. Rufus should be more concerned that his son has no friends!!!! and 2. Dan and Jenny are different people and I really can't fault a teenage girl for wanting to be popular or caring about her reputation
most of the time when I'm watching the show he doesn't get on my nerves in the moment. but then I think about it and I decide he's not a great parent and he needs to get better at actually listening to his children
Lily
she serves cunt it's a shame she traumatized her children
I'm being glib but also I'm not really. I like watching her!! I like that she went from groupie to socialite!!!! she's fun and I have a good time with her. and then I think a little harder about her kids and this post from @vanderwoodlings says it better than I could so I'll leave you with it

not that i disagree with serena’s ending being massively disappointing, but for the sake of argument: wasn’t serena’s happiness when she left new york generally presented more as serena running away from her problems than as genuine contentment? when serena goes off to boarding school, she’s still pretty much doing the same stuff as before she left (which may be a retcon, but is canon nonetheless), and hasn’t really processed any of what happened with blair or nate or georgina or pete. when serena goes off to paris, although she has a good time, she also doesn’t actually emotionally deal with any of what happened with her dad and is just as lost (if not even more so) when she returns to the city. this is taken to its logical extreme when she runs off to upstate new york post-overdose and literally changes her name and identity to avoid her problems, until those problems quite forcefully show up on her doorstep. the only time leaving new york seems to offer her any benefit is when she spends time in los angeles during the summer between seasons 4 and 5, but that’s mainly because she’s focused on a new job she’s passionate about and wasn’t actually having any major interpersonal issues at the time. all of which is to say, while the ues is legitimately toxic and time spent away from it is generally a good idea for any character - serena included - i can’t help but feel that serena talking about wanting to go away to another state and “start over” is more of an avoidance behavior than anything else, given that anytime something traumatic happens to her throughout the series serena’s impulse is to “start over” rather than work through the trauma. i’m not sure how much it would actually matter if she had left if she was still unwilling or unable to do that, as no matter how much she might have wanted to, serena couldn’t truly run away from herself.
Okay so, I’ve been thinking about this all morning and I’m gonna start off by saying that YMMV when it comes to Serena’s characterization.
But the way I personally see things is that Serena doesn’t run away so much as she runs toward something if that makes sense? (Also I’m just gonna link to goodbye stranger now, cause a lot of what I’m gonna say I talked about in that fic as well lol). At the end of season 2, she’s running towards her dad. She only starts acting out and going back to her old party girl ways once he refuses to see her and she’s trying to get his attention. At the end of season 3, she’s kinda running with Blair if that makes sense. Like yeah, the summer didn’t turn out that way, but it was supposed to be this boy-free girl’s trip, you know? In season 4, she goes to try to help Ben. At the end of season 4, she goes to find herself, and she seemingly does find herself and her place in LA. Like the only two times Serena really runs away and not towards something are pre series to boarding school and the end of season 5. And while I don’t think those were the healthiest choices she could’ve made, she does seem happy. Like the retcon, but now canon, flashbacks at boarding school show her pretty happy actually? She’s having fun partying, there’s no hints that there’s something darker going on, she’s seemingly not mourning Blair and Nate at all (and sure there’s a way to read it that her still partying is her in mourning, but that would be a reach with what they gave us to work with in that scene), and then there’s all the Ben stuff, which, while I don’t like it, she’s pretty happy trying to be his favorite student up until he rightfully rejects her attempt to sleep with him. And all the Steven stuff too! I personally think it’s bad, especially you know the whole pretending to be someone else and all. But she states multiple times how happy she is! And given how her relationship with Steven doesn’t fall apart until after they get back to NY, there’s no reason to think that she was lying about how happy she was that summer between 5 & 6. But the narrative explicitly doesn’t want her to be happy ("And the only thing more disturbing than finding her on drugs or in a psych ward is seeing her happy and healthy.”), at least not if it means she’s not in NY, because the narrative pretty much requires everybody to be in NY, bends over backwards to try to keep everyone in it long after it stops making sense (also yeah, I agree that the UES is a toxic hole that every character deserves to be free of - again not to reference my own fic, but that’s like a plot point in goodbye stranger, getting everybody out of there lol).
But yes, Serena absolutely has an avoidant personality, but her running away is a symptom, not the cause. Like it’s not like she deals with her problems when she comes back to New York either. When she comes back in season 1, she doesn’t actively deal with all the reasons she left. She’s hoping things can continue on exactly as to how she left it. She’s forced to deal with the Nate stuff when Nate tells Blair, she’s forced to deal with Pete Fariman when Georgina comes back to town. When she comes back from Paris, it still takes her episodes and episdoes to make a choice between Nate and Dan. (And all the dad stuff doesn’t really return until season 5, and even then it’s more about him fathering Lola, than you know…giving Lily fake cancer to try to reunite the family which…god William sucks so bad how was he Lily’s endgame???) When she comes back with Steven, she still avoids Blair and Dan as much as possible for several episodes, has essentially cut them out of her life instead of dealing with all the events of the end of season 5.
I also think the most important part of that screen cap I shared is not the part where she says she wants to leave the state, but instead the part where she says wants to be around lots of people who don’t know her. There’s this contradiction in Serena. There’s the side of her that just wants to have an anonymous, normal life, and then there’s the side of her that is clinging to the spotlight and her IT girl status. I personally think the girl who just wants to live a life free from the Van der Woodsen name and all it entails is the real Serena. But the narrative wants us to beleive the IT girl version of Serena is the real Serena (even though it always brings out her worst qualities which…sigh). It goes back towards the classism that gets baked into the show the more and more it focuses on Chuck. Serena denying her “birthright" as the IT girl is her denying her true self, because she truly is just better than everyone else guys!! She just is!! She doesn’t need to reinvent herself or become a version of herself that she actually likes, because she’s Serena van der Woodsen and that means something in New York!!! (that was all sarcasm obviosuly)
And look, contradictions at a character level are nothing new to GG. Blair states multiple times throughout the series how unhappy Chuck makes her, but he’s somehow still her happily ever after anyway. But I chose to focus on what the character is saying rather than the narrative a lot of the time when it comes to GG, and Serena keeps affirming over and over again how much happier she would be out of New York, how much happier she was when she was in LA and Upstate, how things were easier in Paris, etc. So I personally chose to believe her, but I get why people interpret her another way. But I do agree that Serena’s avoidant personality would have to be dealt with wherever she ends up, and she would need to truly face her problems to finally escape her past (Gonna promo goodbye stranger one more time lol). But I also do think this would be harder for her to do in New York than somewhere else. The way things go in New York, Serena can’t help but get caught up in all her old patterns. And like I said earlier, the UES is a toxic hole that makes all the characters get stuck in their old patterns and regresses any potential growth characters ever make. (Yes, the UES is a metaphor for GG, a poorly written show that keeps characters stuck in their old patterns and regresses any growth). So that’s why I think she needs to leave New York to have a satisfying ending. Because I just don’t think she’s really capable of having any growth there.

So as this is an ask and so i am gonna keep this short but also make my own posts, but do you get the vibe that the yuki, mafayu and ugetsu aki and haruki mirror each other ? like in the middle of each couple is someone who is worshipped , on one side is someone who can't fully devote because music becomes a sort of another god , they each have a token ( haru's hair and yuki's guitar which to me in ways are both qn entrapment, ) there is uncontrolled or overfilling desire on the other side and then there is the casting out of one's self in the middle and maybe the pull of music being fun on one end and haunting on the other and characters that defined as kind but are just as messy and changing as the other?
I am also on my phone and at work so who knows of this makes any sense at all.
Fantastic observation! You touched on a question that I was about to make into a meta anyway! I get what you mean by push and pull so I’m going to try and break it down.
Mirrors in Given headcanons EXPLAINED
There is absolutely this idolisation that occurs in Yuki/Mafuyu/Ue and Ugetsu/Akihiko/Haruki. And you’re absolutely right, no one in Given is perfect but they all demonstrate a flawed love, a human love.
Kizu highlights in Given that
Music is a space where characters' true authentic selves are unveiled.
Yuki and Ugetsu
Yuki and Ugetsu are both incredibly depressed bois so rather that music is seen as some form of god, to them I think it's more an emotional outlet/therapy otherwise holding in all the pain and dark thoughts become too much.
Music is used to process their depression and because they want to uphold this facade of "being perfect and ok" (Yuki) or "being nonchalant and happy" (Ugetsu), they want to hide their music away from their SO.
They don't want that facade to come down because they are ENMESHED with their respective partner's emotional wellbeing. Yuki wants Mafuyu to have all the best "firsts" and bring perfect songs to him while Ugetsu's music has already been heard by Akihiko, therefore he says that he cannot freely express himself knowing how much it is hurting Akihiko. (As Akihiko can hear his pain) Due to wanting to uphold a facade while at the same time being enmeshed with their partner's emotions, they both feel like they have to CHOOSE music OR their partner.
Mafuyu and Akihiko
Triangulation (coined by Murray Bowen) is something subconsciously practised by Akihiko and Mafuyu.
Pyschologist Murray Bowen suggests that
"a dyad (a two-person relationship) is the most basic of all human relationships — but that it is also the most unstable. Bowen said that a dyad is the most unstable of all human relationships because when two persons are at odds with each other, they tend to triangle (i.e., hook in) in a third person in order to stabilise the dyad relationship and receive emotional support from that third person. He called this process triangulation."
Both Mafuyu and Akihiko wanted to pierce through the facades of Yuki and Ugetsu and get to know the real them but needed the emotional support of a third person in order to help diminish the pain of their broken hearts as they go about their healing processes.
Mafuyu absolutely started music in order to get to know Yuki better and accidentally "triangled" Uenoyama
Akihiko accepted Haruki's invitation to join the Seasons in order to escape and spite Ugetsu but accidentally "triangled" Haruki
It is interesting to note that Yuki idolized Mafuyu to some extent because he feels the need to remain perfect around Mafuyu. Yuki only seems perfect because he was putting on a facade but we gotta remember that we get most of our info about Yuki through Hiiragi, who idolized Yuki. However, it is important to note that because Yuki died, Mafuyu can't help but be completely haunted by Yuki.
While in Akigetsu, it's Akihiko who idolised Ugetsu, however Ugetsu is incredibly emotionally enmeshed with Akihiko, hence Akihiko's pain causes him pain.
EDIT: upon further research, I now believe that both Ugetsu and Akihiko idolized each other. Ugetsu held Akihiko to an unbelievably high standard as a partner. Ugetsu wanted to receive tender-loving-care while also wanted Akihiko to measure up to his violin skills. That in its own way is a form of idolisation and a form of "tough love". I have a huge meta coming out about this.
Basically idolisation or not, MafuYuki and Akigetsu are enmeshed with each other as for all parties involved, it's the overwhelming flood of first love that causes this enmeshment. So I will represent idolisation with a coloured <> symbol and enmeshment will be represented with a non-coloured <> symbol.
Yuki <> Mafuyu
Ugetsu <> Akihiko
They then unknowingly fell in love with the third person that they "triangled" into their broken dyads. But Mafuyu and Akihiko keep their new love interest at an emotional distance in order to hide their broken hearts because they are scared that the third person will abandon them.
Mafuyu started liking and dating Uenoyama but Mafuyu is still healing from Yuki therefore hides his songwriting processes from Ue, afraid that Ue is going to leave him (in the manga/not as much in the OVA).
Akihiko started liking Haruki but Akihiko upholds a facade (subconsciously) in order to ensure that Haruki won't abandon him.
Both Mafuyu and Akihiko have an amplified fear of abandonment due feeling abandoned by their exes and due to being raised in broken family structures.
Triangulation is evident because the moment that Haruki and Ue seem to waver their emotional support and potentially abandon them, Mafuyu and Akihiko both get incredibly triggered. i.e Ch 9 and Ch 19 respectively. ALSO it's interesting to point out that when Akihiko witnessed Mafuyu in Ch9 getting triggered and angry at Ue for seemingly losing faith in him, isn't it fascinating that Akihiko immediately says to Haruki, "Thanks for saving me" because up till that point in the story, Haruki's emotional support has been unwavering for Akihiko. So that's why he gets so upset in Ch 19 when he is triggered at the possibility of Haruki leaving him.
Keeping up a facade obviously is not healthy because eventually that pain seeps through and the facade cracks, causing more pain and destruction for the individual in question and the person they have 'triangled'.
BTW please don't mistake me listing all this to show that they are bad people because they absolutely are not. All I am saying is that they are flawed and subconsciously reacting to reality through a lens of trauma and familial abandonment.
Uenoyama and Haruki
Ue and Haruki are both that "third person" that have been acquired to stabilise the dyad and provide emotional support for Mafuyu and Akihiko. They also come from stable family structures which plays a huge part into why they are attracted to healing the broken bois, Akihiko and Mafuyu.
Kizu's been hinting that they are both emotional 'servers' to Mafuyu and Akihiko since the beginning HOLY SHIT.
Both Ue and Haruki were, to some extent, haunted by the omnipresence of their crush's exes, Yuki and Ugetsu respectively. And yes you’re right, even though they embody kindness, they are flawed human beings and respond to the rough patches of their relationships very differently:
Ue, even though he is more grounded in himself, he is dealing with amplified jealousy so he responds by desperately trying to reach Mafuyu through music then playing support for SYH in order to know more about Mafuyu's past, blinded by the fact it’s feeding into Mafuyu’s sense of abandonment up until Ch 43.
Haruki, who has comparatively lower self-esteem, responded by running away to play support for another band then pulling further away when he feared that Akihiko's passionate violin performance might be motivated by Ugetsu in Ch28.
Character's (initial) Romantic Idolisation:
Yuki <> Mafuyu <> Ue
Ugetsu <> Akihiko <> Haruki
Haruki did idolise Akihiko due to his low self-esteem. Akihiko also idolised Haruki because in his eyes, Haruki is someone sought after by everyone while he himself is undesirable. @raine-kai wrote the fantastic post on this (and it's linked here). Akihiko also upheld a facade around Haruki which started to crack after the first-live show and upon Ugetsu's return to Japan.
Ue doesn't idolise Mafuyu but for Ue, this is his first relationship, so his feelings of love and jealousy are more amplified and him blaming himself for Mafuyu's emotional wellbeing is also amplified so I'm representing that with a non-coloured ">". Mafuyu although doesn't idolise Ue, is carrying part of his trauma into the new relationship and may feel musically inadequate to Ue, especially since lately he feels like he can't sing so he is being hesitant towards wanting to rehearse with Ue so I'm also representing that with a non-coloured ">"
Character's (initial) priorities with love and music:
Yuki prioritised Mafuyu, but to uphold facade without being able to process his pain, he unfortunately did the what he did.
Ugetsu prioritised music to process his pain but couldn't fully let go of Akihiko
Mafuyu wants to get know Yuki better and chose music as a means to do that
Akihiko wants to escape and spite Ugetsu and chose contemporary music as a means to do that
Ue prioritised Mafuyu, putting his own needs and wants in music on the backend in order to reach Mafuyu until it reached a breaking point by the end of Ch43 T_T
Haruki prioritised Akihiko from the start and chose music as a way to start the band and STILL PRIORITISED the emotional wellbeing of Akihiko post ch20 incident
I hope this breakdown helps explain the "haunting" of music (Yuki and Ugetsu) on one side and the "casting out of oneself in the middle" (Mafuyu and Akihiko) and the "pull of music being fun" but ultimately their love of music currently is motivated by the love they feel for their SOs (Ue and Haruki).
But I also want to talk about something even more fascinating...
Cross Mirrors between the two trios
1) Mafuyu, Yuki and Ugetsu are 🎶MUSICAL MIRRORS 🎶 because Mafuyu also realises that he can use music as an emotional outlet/therapy (thanks to Ue). They are somewhat all deemed "musical geniuses" in Given by other characters. Because they are all musical mirrors who uses music to express relieve their emotions, that's why Ugetsu immediately sensed Mafuyu as another like-minded lonely "genius" and immediately got along with him.
2) Akihiko and Ue are 🎶MUSICAL MIRRORS 🎶and ❤️ROMANTIC MIRRORS ❤️ because their main passion for life is music as they both found music fun as kids and then lost the passion partway through. They still feel like they have to CHOOSE music or their partner because their lack of progress and passion in music leads to depression. That's why Akihiko was so depressed because by staying with Ugetsu, he lost his passion for music by comparing himself to Ugetsu but also feeling sad for Ugetsu as he saw how much pain Ugetsu was in through watching him play.
But now, Akihiko and Haruki see each other as equals (YAYYYY) because the facades are broken down when they lived together for a few months. Akihiko isn't ESCAPING with music but LOVING music again through spending time with Haruki and Haruki realises that Akihiko isn't a genius but has to put in EFFORT to play music well.
The Triangulation between Ugetsu/Akihiko/Haruki is dissolving.
However, I'm pretty sure Ue was depressed right before meeting Mafuyu so it was Mafuyu that made him REGAIN his passion for music. Ue has made Mafuyu synonymous with music and his core drive for life. But just like Akihiko is with Ugetsu, Ue is both moved and hurt by Mafuyu’s music. Mafuyu's ongoing hesitation and seemingly rejecting music is now causing Ue lots of pain in the most recent arc as he feels like Mafuyu is rejecting him as a person in Chapter 43.
5) Ugetsu, Mafuyu, Akihiko and Haruki 💥REACTIONARY MIRRORS💥 because all 4 of them resort to some sort of "flight mode" and running away when things get difficult.
They are therefore also💥REACTIONARY FOILS💥to Ue, who is amazing at admitting his mistakes, being truthful about his feelings and tries to resolve most issues head-on. Hint hint ch44
6) Yuki and Ue are 💥REACTIONARY FOILS 💥because although both Yuki and Ue share an intense and enmeshed love for Mafuyu, Yuki's need to uphold a a facade highlights the honesty and openness of Ue.
In summary:
A partner's idolisation of their SO is stemmed from their depression and/or low-self esteem but due to first love and trauma, enmeshment can be just as intense for characters who don't idolise their partners.
STILL NOW: Yuki <> Mafuyu <> Ue
NOW: Ugetsu = Akihiko = Haruki
Akigestu mirrors MafuYuki in romance ❤️as they are both childhood friends turned into lovers dealing with broken hearts and being in love with someone who upheld a facade of some sort.
Akiharu mirrors Mafuyama in romance ❤️broken bois going through a process of healing with their SO who they accidentally ‘triangled’ into their lives.
Mafuyu and Akihiko are different people tho because Mafuyu uses music as an emotional outlet while the Akihiko's passion is music, therefore they need different people in their next relationship to fulfil those different parts of them.
AKIgestu mirrors MafuYAMA in music 🎶 and romance ❤️
Music is both Akihiko and Uenoyama's CORE PASSION FOR LIFE. They are emotionally enmeshed with Mafuyu and Ugetsu who use music to process their depression/trauma hence Aki and Ue can hear the pain in their partner's music and in turn it damages their passion for music. These relationships are Akihiko's and Ue's overwhelming experiences of first love.
So while Mafuyu is trying to figure out his trauma and what music means to him, it's painful for Ue who misinterprets Mafuyu's response to music as Mafuyu's inability to be happy and satisfied being with Ue.
Symbolism of Boxes in Given
Kizu-sensei even made the boxes in Given symbolic AF (this pic is also the cover of Ch 4). Boxes represent the burden of falling in love with a depressed musical "genius" who seems emotionally distant.
Akihiko fell in love with Ugetsu, depressed musical "genius" who upheld a facade.
Mafuyu fell in love with Yuki, depressed musical "genius" who upheld a facade.
Uenoyama fell in love with Mafuyu, musical "genius" who is keeping emotional distance because he's still grieving and processing trauma.
That's why the box in Ch 14 is Akihiko passing the "burden" to Mafuyu who needs to process his trauma in order to move on. But Mafuyu finds it too hard and too heavy so Uenoyama steps in and carries it for him, saying
"I'll endure it".
But the question now is, is the burden too heavy for Ue as well? (Ch 40, Akihiko says it might be too much for 17 years olds to handle 🤭🤭🤭)
It's interesting to note that Akihiko can relate to Mafuyu and Uenoyama from both a ❤️ romantic and 🎶musical point of view.
Tokens in Given
Responding to the part of your question where you suggested Yuki’s guitar and Haruki’s hair are tokens of of entrapment, I sort of agree but I feel like their respective symbolisms operate differently.
Haruki’s hair is a symbol of hopeful love, that one day Akihiko would ask him out. The hair isn’t exclusive to Haruki, as in Ch12, we saw Yayoi cut off her hair because she realised Akihiko was in love with someone else and right after Haruki cut his hair in Ch21, Haruki makes note that Mafuyu grew out his bangs. So hair is a token of growing love rather than a Haruki-specific ‘entrapment’ per say.
Yuki’s guitar on the other hand is a dual symbolism to represent Mafuyu’s identity-crisis with music where he can’t figure out if he’s playing/avoiding music because he can’t move on from Yuki or if he is trying to find his self-expression and purpose. I think Yuki's guitar, rather than a token of 'entrapment', functions more like a double-edged sword.
If we are talking about a similar token to Yuki's guitar, I would say that Akihiko's violin also acts as a dual symbolism. Akihiko's main drive was violin until Ugetsu came along and he started to lose his passion for music. So in the end when Akihiko became more serious about the violin, it's because he wants to become a "man with passion and purpose for life" before asking Haruki out BUT ALSO to stay connected with both himself and Ugetsu through music.
That's eventually where I think Mafuyu will end up, stay connected with Yuki and himself through music but live in the present on stage with Uenoyama.

Adam convinced you to come over to play video games on his stream. Accepting that offer was your first mistake. You knew Kyle would be there as soon as Adam said, "The boys and I were gonna stream today on my Twitch if you wanna join us." You should've said no, but you didn't put two and two together.
For weeks, somethings been going on with Kyle, and you don't know why. He's been acting more distant from you and when you actually talk to him, he makes short comments and barely says three words to you. You don't understand why and you've never been good at confrontation. Kyle was your closet friend in the Undisputed Era, but he's been cold toward you for weeks.
On Thursday at one, you pull up to Adam's house. Roddy's car is here but Kyle and Bobby aren't here yet. You grab your phone and turn off the car before getting out and walking up to the door. You knock three times and wait for someone to answer.
Britt Baker answers the door. "Hey! Y/N, glad you're here. I wondered if Adam invited you," she says, greeting me with a hug. "I guess you're going to be on stream, huh? You're not here to hang with me and Marina."
You laugh and say, "Maybe I'll stay a little bit after the stream is done to hang out with you and Marina. Roddy brought the whole gang over I'm guessing."
With that said, Marina appears in the foyer and says, "He did. He thought that I should hang out with Britt while the stream is going on. Troy is in the living room watching some of his father's favorite matches.:
"Of course," you say, smiling. "Let me go greet the guys and I'll sit with you guys until Adam says it's time for the stream to start."
Britt lets me walk past and I greet Marina with a hug before strolling over to Adam's game room. I can hear his voice and Roderick's voice coming from the room as I pop my head in. "Hey, losers," you say. Adam and Roddy both look at you and both men smile.
Adam says, "Hey, Y/N. I'm just explaining everything to Roddy. I'll catch you up when Bobby and Kyle get here."
Your heart skips a beat at the mention of Kyle. You keep a smile on your face as you say, "Great. I'm excited. What are we playing?"
"I was thinking some Wii Bowling," Adam says. "Or something Wii related. Maybe some VR games as well. I have Beat Saber, which is fun to play."
You sit in Adam's gaming chair and say, "Wii sounds fun. It's been a while since I've played Wii."
Roddy and Adam both laugh as Adam finishes up.
Bobby gets here about fifteen minutes after you and Troy run in after him, crawling onto your lap on Adam's chair. "Aunt Y/N, what are you gonna play with daddy, Uncle Adam, and Uncle Bobby?" he asks, curious. You smile and hold on on your lap.
"We haven't figured that out yet," you say. "I'll let you in on a little secret though." You lean into Troy's ear and your voice drops to a loud whisper. "I'm gonna beat your dad and your uncles."
Adam, Roddy, and Bobby all look at me and Adam goes, "Hey! I'm the professional gamer here."
You stick your tongue out at Adam and say, "I'm a professional Wii player."
Troy giggles and says, "Yeah! Aunt Y/N is gonna kick your butts."
You laugh and that's when another voice chimes in. "Who said that Aunt Y/N is gonna kick our butt?" You turn your head and look at the doorway.
Kyle. He's finally here.
"Uncle Kyle!" Troy says, scrambling off your lap and running over to Kyle. Kyle hugs the little man and picks him up.
Roderick looks at you then looks at Troy in Kyle's arms. "Alright, buddy," Roddy says. "Time to go sit with mommy and Aunt Britt. Maybe they'll give you a snack if you listen to them."
Kyle puts Troy down and he runs into the living room with Marina and Britt. Kyle closes the door behind him and turns to his Undisputed Era brothers and "bro hugs" them. Then he turns to you and you open your mouth to say something but Kyle says, "Surprised to see you here, Y/N. I didn't think Adam would invite you."
Adam looks at Kyle and says, "Bro-"
You cut Adam off and say, "I'm a member of the Undisputed Era too, Kyle. Or do you not remember saving me from an assault by Toni Storm then helping me secure the NXT Women's Championship against Io?"
Roddy, Bobby, and Adam all stare between you and Kyle as Kyle says, "You're only a member by storyline, Y/N. You're not an actual member."
Your eyes widen and Roderick jumps in saying, "Woah, Kyle. Dude, she's a member of the Undisputed Era. Storyline or not."
Adam says, "Alright before things get out of hand, let's get this stream started. You guys ready?"
Everyone nods. You keep your eyes on Kyle though, trying to figure out why he's making so many hurtful comments. Adam sits in his chair in front of the greenscreen and puts his headset on. You stand beside Roddy while Bobby and Kyle stand behind you too. Adam's going to make introductions. This is a surprise to his Twitch community that you're all going to be on. It's his 200th stream, and it was Adam's idea to bring you all onto the stream.
He looks at the camera and says, "Alright. It looks like I'm live. Is my early crew here?" He pauses and smiles. "It is the 200th stream, you're right. I have a surprise for the 200th stream but I want to wait for more people to get in here before I tell you guys what the surprise is."
You sigh and Roddy says softly, "You seem nervous, Y/N. You nervous?"
Shaking your head, you whisper, "No. I'm fine."
Adam says, "Alright. There's a decent amount of people in here now. Do you guys want to know the 200th stream surprise? It might, how do you say it, shock the system." He smirks and winks a few times at the camera before waving you over first. "Okay, so first we have Miss L/N."
You jump into the frame behind Adam and smile. "Hey," you say before glancing at the chat. "Woah, hi, everyone. Looks like chat is excited."
He laughs and says, "Y/N isn't the only surprise. We got the whole gang here. Roddy, Kyle, Bobby." The three of them join you in standing behind Adam. The chat goes wild and the viewership goes up by a couple thousand. Adam looks at the four of you behind him before looking back at his chat. "Woah, it's going by so quick. So many gifted subs and bits, holy crap."
"Is this a PG stream?" Bobby asks.
Adam nods and says, "Yeah."
You and Roddy both laugh because Bobby likes to curse so much. All of you have to remind him to stop cursing while in the ring sometimes. It's crazy how much he likes to curse, but you like to too so you can't say anything.
That's when Kyle takes his first on-stream jab at you. "Y/N, you better watch your mouth," he warns you. "Adam won't be happy if you start dropping f-bombs on his stream."
To get back at him, you say, "You better watch your mouth before I kick your butt in whatever game we're about to play."
Kyle glares at you and Adam says, "Alright, so I was thinking of games we can play and it's recently been brought to my attention that Y/N is a professional Wii player so let's put that to the test and see just how good she is. Y/N? Game options?" He looks back at you and you begin to think.
"Wii Sports," you blatantly say. "I wanna beat Kyle's butt just because I can."
The group laughs, except for Kyle. You look over at him and smirk. Roddy puts a disk into Adam's Wii console and hands remotes to all of us. Kyle doesn't get one because only four people max can play Wii Sports.
Kyle says, "What about me? I didn't get a remote."
Bobby looks at all of us as we connect our remotes then says, "Maybe you can share with Y/N. I'm sure she wouldn't mind bowling every other frame."
Mentally you groan but physically you say, "Yeah, just pick up your spares, O'Reilly." All of you pick the Miis that you made before the stream. You and Kyle are third to go, and you both decided to throw every other frame. You'd get even frames and Kyle would get odds, so he starts off the game for you both.
Roddy misses a spare in the first, Adam strikes, Kyle picks up his spare, and Bobby gutters then knocks down seven pins on the second shot.
Half the game passes and you're having fun with your doubles partner. Kyle doesn't make any snide remarks toward you and actually cheers you on when you make a spare or strike. In the eighth frame, he actually gives you a high-five.
As Kyle throws the ninth frame, you lean and whisper in Adam's ear while he's out of frame, "You set this up, didn't you? Making Kyle and I team up like this?"
Adam shrugs as Kyle strikes. You get excited and actually hug Kyle. You're now right behind Adam in scoring. Bobby has no chance at winning the game, Roddy isn't that far behind you, and you are just seven pins behind Adam.
You watch as Adam throws his tenth and final frame. He strikes and picks up his spare. Now you're twenty-seven pins behind the leader of the Undisputed Era. He threw a 156 game. You and Kyle can get a 159 if you get all three strikes in the tenth. Technically, you just need two strikes and eight pins on the third shot to beat Adam with a 157 game.
Kyle watches as you get the first strike in the tenth. He cheers for you. You sigh and get ready for your second shot. You strike again. Eight more pins and you beat Adam.
Then it happens. Kyle has had all game to do something to you and he does it just as you throw the ball. It over hooks and you only knock down three pins. You lost by four pins because Kyle decided to yell, "Let's go, Y/N" at you and he scared you so much you jumped, affecting what the ball does on the screen.
The look on Kyle's face was priceless when you turned to him. He looked terrified. "I had it, Kyle!" you shout, kind of annoyed at him. Then you snap. "You just love when I prove myself wrong, don't you? I don't get it. We were so close and all of a sudden, you start acting differently. It's like I did something to you and I don't know what I did."
"Y/N-" Kyle starts.
You cut him off and say, "Save it, O'Reilly." You shove the remote at him and leave the game room. You walk into the kitchen, needing a glass of something to keep you from absolutely losing it.
He didn't need to yell it. He could've done anything else except yell it. It scared you so much that you messed up the winning shot.
Britt and Marina walk into the kitchen and Britt asks, "What happened? You stormed out of there and you looked angry."
After chugging a glass of water, you say, "Kyle happened. Again. He's been up my ass for months and I don't know what I did to deserve this. We were like best friends and he was so excited when I joined the Undisputed Era. Now all of a sudden he's saying the only reason I'm in the group is because of storylines and he's making sure that I prove myself wrong. I say I can beat the guys and he yells something, scaring me, so I mess up the shot and losing to Adam."
Marina sighs and says, "You need to talk to him, Y/N. This pent-up frustration isn't going to do either of you any good."
"I'm not good at confrontation, Marina," you explain. "I never have been."
There are footsteps that come into the kitchen and you look behind the girls to see who it is. It's Kyle. You roll your eyes and try to ignore him even as he says, "Y/N, I'm so sorry. I didn't know that it would scare you like that. I wouldn't have done it if I had thought-"
You snap and say, "You haven't been thinking, Kyle. Not recently, anyway. These comments you're making hurt me. It hurts when you tell me I'm only in the group because of a storyline when you all welcomed me into the group a few months ago."
The girls leave the room, leaving me and Kyle alone. You sip off another glass of water as Kyle says, "I felt like things were changing with us, Y/N. That's why I started acting the way I have been. I pushed you away because I was scared."
Annoyed, you ask, "Scared of what, Kyle? Scared I was going to do something that would risk our friendship? I noticed it too and I was scared too, but I didn't start making rude comments toward you." Finally, you meet Kyle's eyes. They're full of sincerity and regret.
Kyle says, "Come back to the group. I'm sorry for yelling and making you mess up your shot. I promise I'll be good."
"I don't trust you," you say. You have every right to not trust him. Every time he tells you he'll stop making comments, he does it again. He does it multiple times. "You say that then break your promise. It's happened several times at this point, Kyle."
He looks kind of hurt at your comment. Then something inside Kyle snaps and he says, "Such a hypocrite. You tell me that you'd never make hurtful comments but then you say you don't trust me."
You put the glass down and say, "Maybe you understand what I've been going through for the past few months now, Kyle." Tears sting your eyes as you stare at Kyle. "Do you know how many times I've been alone in a room after you've left and I've just cried? Do you know how many times I've wondered what I've done wrong that has made you treat me this way?"
Kyle almost shouts, "It's nothing you did, Y/N! You haven't done anything except being the kindest and the most caring human being toward me for years. I just started to fall for you and it scared the hell out of me so I just pushed you away."
Your jaw drops. You had noticed that your friendship may have been treading into the more than friends territory but you didn't know that Kyle was falling for you this entire time.

jeong... okay, i’m not gonna lie, if actually thought about this: if i was ever going to do a sequel for jeong, it’d be that they (after the end of idwtlotm) and sw somehow get summoned by the yondimine to kohona on the night of the kyuubi attack, and jeong gets asked to protect baby naruto. so it’s basically jeong/soo-won raising a baby naruto while being on the run lol. jeong is a summon in this world, so they can’t really die, and they’re still at least s-class, and latter on kage level. sw picks up genjutsu extremely quickly. naruto grows up very happy and loved :) (also jeong might start collecting tailed beasts the way they collected dragons lol) (the title would be I don’t want to live in the sea)

oh man i also joined in april and you're so right like. the change in dream's demeanour since then ... he's obviously so much happier & more relaxed now and enjoying himself and i just . ue ue ue i love a man and i'm so pleased he seems to be doing better

dude dream is such a softie im gonna cry. if i could pinpoint a moment to say 'here's when things changed' i would say it was the stream after mcc14 when he talked about the speedrunning situation. you can tell he felt really guilty about it and just saying it released a huge weight off his shoulders.
cause back in may/june he would barely stream, i think he streamed maybe 3 times? he was getting blows left and right. but now he's !!! so much happier. his confidence is up again. he's back to believing that we got his back. he's learning to navigate through the waves of hate. he's back and having fun all the time and being a menace to his friends and just truly enjoying himself and i'm so happy for him.
it's nice to have the bubbly dream from older vods back.

Scriddler with the ship questions?
There was no number given, so I decided to use "Pre-Relationship" for Scriddler! It was fun to write.
Pre-Relationship:
1: How did they first meet?
Jonathan Crane was still a psychiatrist for Arkham Asylum, so was Harleen Quinzel. They were both supposed to be on The Riddler's case, but Harleen took The Joker's instead. Leaving Jonathan alone in a room with the known sociopathic murderer that traps people in his sick games, Edward Nygma, used to be known as 'Eddie Nashton', a shy clumsy fellow.
There was also another thing with them that I had thought. It was when Jonathan was still a professor at Gotham University and Edward was still Eddie Nashton and worked at the GCPD, they've crossed paths before without realizing. Maybe they bumped into each other and Eddie was frantically apologizing while helping Jonathan pick up his papers. They only said good days to each other and never met again, until Arkham Asylum.
2: What was their first impression of each other?
Edward despised Jonathan at first, because, well he's a psychiatrist, and Edward hated every single moment he had to be stuck in a room with so-called helpers in Arkham Asylum, Jonathan was unamused with Edward's mood swings, tantrums about Batman, and his threatening riddles he slips in conversations. But unlike the other psychiatrists, he wasn't going to give up on Edward quickly.
3: Did any of their friends/family want them to get together?
Not gonna lie, the other rogues thought they would kill each other if they were in the same room, hell some even made bets with Oswald for who kills each other first. Luckily Jervis is the "dad friend" in The Dork Squad so he keeps both of them from harming each other at first. As for family? Jon's wouldn't be too happy if they found out he's with a man, Edward's wouldn't care because they honestly forgot he existed.
4: Who felt romantic feelings first?
Jonathan 👏 Fucking 👏 Crane 👏It was a very confusing time for Jonathan, he was like "Oh fuckfuckfuckfuck-" *Cues "Accidentally In Love"* He wasn't bashful about it, he was kinda ashamed that he's falling for someone, let alone a man that pushes his buttons every day. Oh how life works in mysterious ways.
5: Did either of them try to resist their feelings?
Both of them have, but Edward was strong with resisting his own feelings. He didn't want to be seen as "weak" by the other rogues if he submitted to his emotions or Jonathan, he has a reputation to stand for God's sake. Plus he thought Jonathan wasn't interested in him or his brain, little did he know.
6: If you had told one of them that the other would be their soulmate, what would they think?
Jonathan at first would be skeptical, but he'd almost believe it. They're both intelligent independent sociopathic murderers with unforuntune pasts and sadistic tendencies, it's like they're met for each other, in a way. Edward would just laugh at your face and call you a fake and say that can not be true, and maybe zap you with his cane. Give it a couple weeks and he'll think deep of that soulmate thing.
7: What would their lives be like if they had never met?
Honestly, I don't think much would change. Edward would still be The Riddler, and Jonathan will become The Scarecrow one way or another. But I don't think they'd live any longer if they hadn't met. They've been through a lot of life-threatening situations together, if they weren't around to save each other, The Riddler and The Scarecrow would be dead. So maybe it's better off if they meet somehow.

What do you feel about amandamaryanna’s video on gossip girl and cosplaying poor? It reminds me of those tik tok videos that are about the most insane rich person behavior you’ve experienced. I feel like it’s subjective because the characters Dan Vanessa and Zoya are basing their poor ness around THEIR environment. So yes, there are MANY people who are actually poor but compared to their UES counterparts they would be considered “poor” due to the fact that they do not have the insane amount of disposable wealth that the other characters have and I do not really see that as them trying to cosplay as poor.
Also what are your thoughts on her argument on GG not really talking about class consciousness and POC issues. Even though the characters Ursula, Jane and Raina had short appearances on the show, as a Black person I think that is was great that they added the few POC characters on GG because their identity was not the main focus of their characters. Usually with Black or POC characters they have to go through some racial turmoil as part of the plot and in GG they got to be rich UES-ers simply because they are. Even though GG is very verryy flawed Penelope, Nelly, Kati, Isabelle and Zoe were shown how POC characters can be rich like the white characters in the show as well GG is obviously a fictional show that’s not based on anything so I don’t think that racial income statistics/racial implications need to be talked about 24/7.
so i started watching this video & just ended up reading the transcript instead. anyway. under a read more:
like, yes. i agree with her on one hand - i think gossip girl 2007 messed up by making dan's grievances be connected to financial status, because the humphreys certainly weren't "poor". like i think this point she says makes sense to an extent:
The comparison between outsiders and insiders and gossip girl is all about relativity. To the average viewer it seems absurd that a character like Dan is supposed to represent the outsider when he is so farther in than any of us could get.
But honestly, something i hate is how people who talk about this show act as if everyone who's watching is expected to know the prices of rent in new york city, etc. like i did NOT realise how expensive that loft is until someone else mentioned it to me and i would not have guessed! who is your "average viewer" - is it an American? someone who lives in New York? someone who lives in Brooklyn? you can't just define an average viewer in that way, i feel! like you are making a BIG Assumption there and it's not necessarily accurate. people who aren't american watch american tv! such is the world we are living in.
but keeping that aside, yeah: dan and jenny had stable and secure housing, the guarantee of meals, and were attending expensive private schools, so i think the show's messaging regarding class was a little strange. they definitely weren't in a financially unstable situation.
but also, you're right. like, dan and jenny weren't super duper broke, and at no point do they actually act like they are, tbh. dan is very 'oh my parents sacrificed so much to send me to st jude's' and jenny is very 'damn i wish i was richer' but there isn't really an instance where the humphreys seem to view themselves as being extremely poor, that i remember at least. in s1, jenny says something along the lines of, "we're humphreys; we're not exactly royalty." and like. she is not wrong! they're financially stable kids, but they're ordinary kids living in an environment where everyone else has the safety net of millionnaire parents to fall back on, and however much money rufus has, he isn't that.
so i think it's a grey area, like, YES, the humphreys have wealth related privilege (i don't know if this can be said for v, because honestly we don't know much about her living situation, but we do know that she works as a waitress for a bit in s1, and also that she's homeschooled, so she isn't shelling out big $$ for school fees.) but also dan and jenny are treated as 'less than' because they are considered nobodies.
and i feel like THAT is the angle the show should have taken. not "i am oppressed because i am not rich" but rather, "everyone at school alienates me and treats me different and it's making things so difficult for me." whenever people say that dan and jenny acted like they were more oppressed than they actually were i'm like. they were both, in different ways, made to feel small and insecure and hopeless, at school? like of COURSE they're gonna feel victimised. dan is treated like he doesn't exist, and jenny is treated so horribly that i don't even have an adjective. like. i think the writing of the show would've been much stronger if it had focused on THAT and not made it a class thing.
i haven't watched the reboot beyond ep02, so i'm not gonna comment on that.
so yeah, i don't think it was 'cosplaying poor' as much as it was 'showing wealth related stuff extremely inaccurately.' like an anon told me, portraying nyu as community college is super inaccurate, as well. and it makes no sense? like i don't know why they had to do this and why they couldn't just... shoot at a regular community college. gossip girl 2007 did not care for representing poor people at all, like, if you watch the show you can tell that it just luxuriates in this aesthetic of like: more food than anybody can eat at every meal. so many luxuries. unnecessarily expensive things everywhere. like the show was very much luxury porn. to me it felt like it wasn't cosplaying poor as much as it was offering people a chance to wank off to the rich. & maybe because of that, the humphreys weren't allowed to be poorer. gg 2007 wasn't supposed to represent all of NY, it was supposed to represent the uber rich elite. and then you have dan and jenny humphrey, and vanessa abrams. they weren't allowed to be rich, because we needed a class conflict. but they weren't allowed to be poor, either, because this show was all about rich people aesthetics. so we got something weird & in the middle instead.
people forget that chuck was canonically a billionnaire - like, that is a LOT of money. and he is dan & jenny's peer! sadly, i think solely because of THAT, a lot of the oppression the humphreys face... checks out. like chuck being shitty to both dan and jenny - he' has an unethical, absurd, uncomparable-to-whatever-the-humphreys-have amount of money. he can do whatever he wants & buy his way out of there. rufus humphrey's ten thousand dollars or whatever amount he mentions are like pocket change to that guy. if jenny is gonna be treated like a commodity by everyone around her, do her upper middle class roots and expensive loft really matter? well, not do they matter as much as like. can they protect her? (we've watched the show. we know the answer is no.)
re: the characters of colour... i think it's subjective. i ADORE raina, and honestly, if we'd had a NJBC that was nate, serena, blair & raina, the show would've actually been AMAZING. like raina was such a cool character to me - i liked that she was driven, passionate, intelligent, sensitive, caring, fun-loving, thoughtful.... she wasn't on the show for long, but her character felt really solid and fleshed out. i remember a review (idk who wrote this one) in which someone felt that raina's character was "lazy" because a lot of her traits and her backstory paralleled chuck, but i strongly disagree. on raina, those traits were interesting. on chuck, any backstory and larger motive felt like a carpet to cover the dust that was his predatory nature, and to me, felt forced and off. like. this dude assaulted people, i don't care about his daddy issues. but raina seemed SO amazing. her backstory actually fit her personality and gave her depth, and to me, didn't feel forced.
i liked ursula, too! she was a really minor character, but she had a whole arc, and i liked that a LOT. her friendship with serena was very cute! i sadly do not remember jane. i think she was... someone's assistant? but i don't remember who. but i agree with you about raina and ursula, their arcs were very interesting and did not end up being about racial trauma & all that, which, like you said, is refreshing when done right.
that said, i think blair's minions were, uh, an example of blair's racism, and i think it would've been cool if the show unpacked that. blair uses her minions as a status symbol - her 17th birthday at kati's place which is anime themed (?) leaves a bad taste in my mouth because it feels very tokenising of a culture that blair isn't a part of? it would be different if blair treated her minions with respect and dignity and like they were her equals and peers, but she doesn't. the word "minions" itself makes me flinch because it's such a "oh you're inferior" kind of word. it felt to me very much like - they never got to be characters in their own right. they solely existed to prop up blair. and i think that is racist. there was a sense of "Oh, I can't be racist! I have a Black friend and an Asian friend" from Blair - like that's what kati & is were to her. and i think that is a big problem, especially glossed over like that.
i also do think that racial stuff doesn't always need to be the focus! but i don't think it can ever be completely ignored, either. an example of something that is maybe unintentionally racist, but racist nonetheless, is how dan cuts vanessa out of his life entirely but forgives his white friends for treating him farrrr worse. it's an inherent double standard, because dan kind of went "oh yeah. my threshold for white people fucking me over is really high, but if my Black best friend who's so close we're practically family does something even slightly wrong i'm going to cut her out of my life 4ever." did the writers realise this? i don't know. maybe they just didn't think about it. but this is exactly the sort of double standards and racist bullshit that woc, especially Black women, have to face irl (though of course i don't need to tell you that at all), except here, the narrative doesn't even address that, hey, maybe dan's being a dick by reacting this way. and i think that's a problem, too.

how FUN how META. i DO and i actually planned on eventually writing a companion piece because i just have so much for this world, but a lot of it is disjointed and wouldn’t follow a narrative so thanks for giving me an excuse to share anyway (under a cut because it’s gonna get long):
timeline wise, dorota’s wedding takes place just after the last chapter. dan and blair are the “happy couple” for their ceremony.
they spend a part of their first summer together in paris for her father and roman’s commitment ceremony.
they both join the yale daily news during their second year. blair becomes the editor by their third (she insists no one was harmed in the process but dan is skeptical. she also insists that she’s not playing favourites when it comes to choosing his pieces, but that he knows is plainly untrue).
starting second year, they host salons at the apartment. they build their own little friend group away from home that’s solid but not without drama (lots of intellectual-based arguments almost leading to fallouts). blair realizes once she’s away from the UES that one reason it was hard to make friends with girls was her deeply embedded internalized misogyny and it’s not something that’s easily overcome, but she DOES become really close with dasha and clara (who for characters i created to pretty much just fill gaps in the story i ended up becoming very attached to and writing a little spinoff for in my head).
Speaking of dasha and clara: dan is the only guy invited to ~wine night~ because he’s respectful if not really annoying with his opinions (but once he gets enough wine in him he’s completely silent so it works out)(but he also gets very handsy with blair and that’s when they know to call it a night)
i had a huge fight scene in the original first drafts of the final chapter that i ended up cutting because it didn’t flow as well but that still exists somewhere in my notes in it’s entirety — dan goes out with some new friends he made, his phone dies and he comes home tipsy. blair waits up for him but then locks him out and yells at him through the closed door because she didn’t know where he was or what he was doing. and she felt as though he should’ve known not to do that, or to come home even a little drunk, because he was dan and he knew everything without her having to say it. pretty much a mini analysis on how her relationships with chuck and serena would realistically affect her.
they agree to not get married until after graduation. and by this i mean: blair mentions somewhat offhand (while making a vision board for her five year plan at the end of her third year at yale) that she won’t get married until after graduation. dan says: you mean to me? without looking up (and with some poorly masked nervousness) blair says: do you not want to? dan is like. i’d literally marry you right now. blair rolls her eyes. yes, humphrey, that’s the point of the no marriage until graduation rule.
it’s an arbitrary rule, and dan proposes not long after it’s made. (but they do wait)
