“What are you doing?”
The low growl startled you out of your thoughts as you turned your head towards the voice. Your mind had been otherwise preoccupied as you stared at the notebook in your lap and you hadn’t even noticed that your right hand had started to wander. That is, not until you focused in on the feeling of soft hair beneath your fingertips and your eyes met the confused, and slightly annoyed, gaze of your boyfriend next to you.
Leona had been dozing while you were studying, and you hadn’t even realized that you had started to run your fingers through his hair while your mind drifted off to alchemy formulas and spell techniques. It was never your intention to wake him, but as your fingers brushed along the ridge of his ear, you could imagine how it might have startled him back to consciousness.
“I’m sorry,” you murmured as embarrassment washed over you. You hated to admit how relaxing it was for your fingers to twirl around his long, brunette strands and how it helped keep you grounded and focused. But you knew that Leona hated being disturbed from his naps, even if it was by your gentle, caressing touch. “I didn’t mean to disturb your nap.”
Emerald irises regarded you now as the annoyance had slipped from his expression and you felt yourself relax just a bit. Despite your apology, you still hadn’t stopped running your fingers through his locks, and he hadn’t said anything else that might warrant a complete cease and desist. In fact, a small smile appeared to be tugging at the corner of his lips as you slowly brushed along his ear again and your nails scratched gently against his scalp.
Imagine your surprise when, in response, you heard a small purr rip through your boyfriend’s throat as his eyes fluttered shut. Your eyes widened as it was a sound that you had never heard before, and it only took approximately 2.5 seconds before he realized what had happened and his eyes were snapping open once again.
“What was tha-“
“You didn’t hear anything.”
His tone was lacking any type of malice as he sat up on his arms, his cheeks turning a dark red as he gently pushed your hand away from his head. Ultimately, you knew that he had been enjoying your ministrations, and from the noise that he had made, he had also managed to play his entire hand for you to see. He could act all resigned and tough all he wanted, but you knew better. The thought made you smile.
“I can keep going if you’d like,” you grinned, your hand slowly moving back towards the top of his head, only to be halted in mid-air as his hand wrapped around your wrist. His green eyes finally met yours once more and you could see a hint of reservation in them. Everything about your relationship was new territory for him, and you were sure that giving away his emotions in the way that he just had was a lot for him. However, you were here to nurture those feelings and help them bloom, that way he could see and recognize just how cared for he was. “Leona, there is nothing for you to be ashamed of. So, you purred? Who cares-“
“I said, you didn’t hear anything.” With a quick twist of his body, he was soon on top of you, one hand still wrapped around your wrist as he pinned it over your head. For someone that had just been sound asleep, he moved with a quickness and agility that always managed to take your breath away.
There was a flash of warning in his eyes, as if daring you to press him, but the smile on your face only grew as you knew that you were in no imminent danger. His pride was bruised just a bit, but you knew him better than he thought you did.
“Whatever my King says.”
The use of the nickname threw him off as his eyes widened and his hold on your wrist tightened just a bit. It wasn’t the first time he had heard it, and you could tell by that flash in his eyes that he enjoyed it. The purring incident forgotten, there was a new cause to the flush of his cheeks as he used his free hand to swipe your notebook from your lap so that he could press closer to you.
Leona had always suffered from the idea that he wasn’t wanted. Being the second born with no real claim to the throne of his kingdom, he felt… lost. He had the desire to be a leader, but that was often masked under his perceived indifference and laziness when it came to school. However, hearing you call him your ‘king’ and taking in the fond look that you gave him while you said it had a new desire building inside of him that he wasn’t quite sure how to tame on his own.
When he looked at you now, he didn’t think about the kingdom that he would never rule. He didn’t think of those years being cast aside in favor of his brother or how he had longed just to be recognized for his greatness. No, instead, he saw a whole new world that he had been handed the power to reign over. He saw everything he had ever hoped for right in front of him, and it knocked the air from his lungs as he realized what you were offering - what you had always been offering - in exchange for nothing but his affection.
Why settle for a kingdom when he could rule over the whole damn world? That’s what you were to him, anyways.
With the hand that wasn’t pinned by his, you lifted to cup his cheek, easily pulling him from the thoughts that ravaged his brain and bringing him back to the present. He couldn’t help but lean into your soft touch before lowering his head to nuzzle against your neck. The fire that had started inside of him in embarrassment had fizzled as a new flame burst forth in his chest. He could feel your pulse quicken against his lips and the soft sigh that filled his ears was the sweetest sound that he had ever heard.
“I thought you wanted to nap,” you murmured breathlessly as he continued to trail love bites across your neck, applying just enough graze of his teeth to have you arching into him.
“You were the one that woke me up,” he replied quickly, his hot breath fanning across your collarbone, causing you to shiver. “Now, you have to deal with me.”
He knew that you were smiling, and you could envision his smirk in your mind as you pushed your free hand back into his hair. As much as you needed to study, you weren’t going to complain about this particular study break.
“Whatever my King wants.”

Twister Wonderland Spoilers for Chapter 7.
I’m just going to throw this out there—what if Lilia killed Silver’s birth parents?
So, there are a lot of strong hints that Silver is descended from the Knight of the Dawn and Princess Leah and that the former killed Malleus’ parents.
I imagine that while raising Malleus, Lilia was hunting the Knight’s descendants to avenge his friends (and possibly the woman he loved). Then one day he found and killed them. Even though they had no idea who he was or why he hated them so, he murdered them—then he heard a baby crying.
As soon as he saw the baby Lilia is horrified. He realizes that in his rage and quest for revenge, he killed two innocent people and made a child an orphan, just like Malleus and himself.
Just imagine the angst levels, double so if Silver gets to witness this in Lilia's dreams.
(All just imaginings though, as I don’t think Twst has the guts to make Lilia a killer. Even in the chapter where he’s a war general, it’s stated they’re just chasing the enemy out. Still, I'm a fanfic writer, so, naturally, I have angst headcanons and such.)

Yay! Your ask is open! I was dying to ask about your monster hunter x twisted wonderland stuff! Like your pick of who ever, reaction to Fraena explaining about some of the monsters in her world, like she would show them some information about them in her journal just cause they asked.
I'll make a list of what kind of monster piqued their curiosity enough to ask Fraena about it.
How this happens is that they know her abilities as a hunter but they wonder what kind of monsters could she hunt to possibly require... such obnoxious weaponry ahem looking at her Gunlance ahem.
List below:
Heartslabyul - Paolumu
Honestly they thought that this little floof bat wasn't harmless. It honestly looked so cuddly and Cater would think it would make for a nice pillow. But they would be horrified to know that Paolumus are very aggressive because of its environment.
Fraena would casually mention how these fluffy bastards can knock you into the air by inflating the air sac and launching mini twisters at you.
Even the cute ones you need to look out for apparently.
Ace and Deuce are pale when they imagine what it could do if it were here. Riddle was with Cater and thought it looked cute until he was told how much of a little turd it was.
Trey just thought how it looks like a cupcake with vanilla frosting when puffed up. Maybe making some Paolumu themed sweets could snap them out of their shock.
Savanaclaw - Odogaron
A dorm full of students who know how to pick their fights, of course they would want to find out if Fraena even fought any of the monsters drawn in her journal.
Ruggie asked out of curiosity if she has ever hunted anything that was like an apex predator. Fraena just said yes and proceeded to explain how many high rank hunters would sometimes be left in critical condition after hunting an Odogaron.
It looked like something straight from the underworld. That shut them up because from the looks of it, they wouldn't even stand a chance against one even if they all fought it. Big respect for Fraena for making it out alive after hunting this thing.
And just recall it like it was a normal sunday. Damn!
Octavinelle - Lavasioth
tbh, Floyd would be curious to know about the Lava fish because no way that would exist in Twisted Wonderland.
Though it would be terrifying to encounter. A fish that swims in lava and said lava can harden into armor and render your attacks useless? You'd be better off relocating your entire family than try to repel thins thing much less kill it.
Fraena just dislikes this monster because it took too long to kill. She calls it a coward and recalled how she kept follwoing it hoping it would resurface.
Letting them know that she deliberately chased after it because "hitting the lava before it hardens was a good thing" as if hitting lava or getting near it is anything positive.
Jade doesn;t care about that and just wants to know more about the Mosswine. Of course he would.
Scarabia - Kulve Taroth
Kalim wants to hear more stories about the gold monster. Apparently, Jamil saw a page in her journal about a dragon thing that was covered horn to toe in gold and how it lives in a cave full of gold.
It was like a different version of the cave of wonders. But they'd be shocked to know that it takes 16 hunters to take this thing down.
mainly because the resources that it could provide was beneficial to hunters. Jamil was more concerned about the fact that this dragon could set the floor on fire and Fraena along with other hunters... idk just took it like a champ and barreled through?!
She's was worse than Kalim's ability to e a trouble magnet.
Pomefiore - Malfestio
Surely a magnificent bird with bright plumage like this would e ketp as pets on occassion, right? That's what they thought but Fraena just gave them a WTF look and told them that a Malfestio can be dangerous to be kept as a pet.
Their scales can cause confusion and induce sleep, their wings have hidden blades that can slice through most armor which can leave a hunter with less limbs.
She says so much that Vil tries to get her to stop because this was getting rather disturbing.
Rook though, he's very fascinated and wants to know more about this elusive bird. The moment she tells him about its deviant that can disappear completely, you bet he'd be imagining what its like to face one. The beauty of danger...
Yeah, it won't be beautiful when it shreds you to ribbons, Rook....
Ignihyde - Glavenus & Acidic Glavenus
Idia just thinks that a dinosaur with a sword tail that somehow looks natural just makes him think that whatever deity was in Fraena's world, it was feeling very creative when they decided to make this monster.
It was so cool! And it can heat up the blades for additional damage? Ultra cool!
Fraena was kind of fond of this monster and she tells him that it was fun to fight against. Idia looks pale because fighting something that can slice you shouldn't be fun.
Once he finds out about the Acidic Glavenus though, he's going to fanboy so much. It looks like a samurai when the acid crystals are gone from its tail. Not to mention it will lower your defense when you are hit by the crystals and then gain additional damage when you get hit by the sharpened tail.
Definitely a clever foe to fear.
Diasomnia - Gore Magala
Malleus thought the Gore Magala resembles the great dragon that his hometown admires. Fraena feels bad to destroy his expectations but she has to carefully explain that the only similarity was the color of the scales.
This dragon is very dangerous due to the scales causing the frenzy virus that can disrupt the ecosystem, forcing hunters to kill it off before the entire land is destroyed.
Dragon boi is kind of sad that this dragon wasn't noble like the ones back home.
it was kind of terrifying to be living near a dragon that causes an epidemic. Not even the Valley of Thorns have such a dragon.

Like the peice with Ultra Twister and Viper, I made another peice with a simplified art style, this time featuring the kiddy coasters of Great Adventure, Knoebels, and Dutch Wonderland. I like to imagine that their sleepover is taking place at one of Knoebels’ on-site “cottages”. Joust’s coaster may be the oldest of the trio, but this little guy’s fast asleep— but he’s made sure to keep his sword and shield close by (and is likely sleeping in his usual set of clothes). Kozmo is engrossed by a new “scout’s guidebook” she picked up, so much so that she doesn’t even realize that Lil’ Devil Coaster has taken Joust’s sheild to “get a closer look”. Knowing how protective Joust is of his stuff…LDC better hope he sleeps through it. Featuring my kiddy coaster ocs was an idea I’ve had for a while, but didn’t get to it until this year. It was fun designing color-coordinated sleeping bags for this trio!

My favorite thing on the world is eating, so i went several meet-up site and did a search for "learn Korean food," there isn't any found an excellent Korean language exchange group that had each meeting in a substitute Korean kitchen. It was remarkable!
Level 2 is where you can a cool new cocktail bar. Up here may do relax associated with uber cool Alice in Wonderland style decor - you'll believe that Australia student you've just sat down at the tea party! If cocktails are the drink of choice, skip up because these bartenders specialise in mixing tantalising concoctions. Resident DJs spin funk, soul and rnb tunes from 8pm. Up here almost all about style; the bar is comprised of marble, and chandeliers hang in the bathrooms. But it can be still got that same cool, unpretentious vibe that Birdees is recognized for.
The teachers from the kinder garden were very concerned about her English and created a few tips to me exactly how to to get her in order to speak The english language. They were so kind that they bought a few books to attempt to study a bit Chinese so they could talk to her. Their journey of learning Chinese did not go far because in three months my daughter was already speaking English well enough to make herself understood and in another 3 months she was speaking English as well as other kids.

The moment Grayson dropped into the building the connection to his comm went silent, and nothing Damian tried could get it to turn back on. He suspected some kind of interference, if people had been trapped in that building for hours, something was blocking their phone signals, and that same something was probably interrupting their comm line as well. Not that either of them had thought of that before Grayson entered.
A stupid miscalculation on Damian's part. One he would not repeat again.
Damian found an external camera he could hack, and caught sight of a hooded figure whose shape was roughly the same as that of one of the people who had set up the strange twister game. The person was fiddling with something blocky that Damian couldn’t quite make out, before pressing it to the side of the building.
Could it be a bomb? A listening device of some sort? He wasn’t sure, and he couldn’t hail Grayson. But, perhaps he could send backup Batman’s way.
“Oracle, I need your assistance.”
“Hey Lil’ D, what’s up?” Gordon asked, sounding far too bright for this hour, and curious.
He ignored the outrageous nickname usage, “Are the Birds close to the downtown shopping district?”
“Batgirl and Black Bat are currently stowed away on a ship, getting ready to turn it around. Why?”
“Tt, Batman is in need of backup. There are unknown hostiles approaching him and a possible bomb threat, but I cannot contact him.”
“I’ll give it a shot on my end. Is Tim home yet? Can he head out?”
Damian ground his teeth. No his brother, and Grayson’s supposed partner, had not returned yet. If he had, he had not made it known to any of them. There was no one to back Batman up. No one but Damian himself.
He shoved aside all thoughts of possible punishment for going out without permission, and pushed his chair away from the desk.
“No. He is not.” Damian stood, “It seems it is up to me to handle the situation. Oracle, stay on this line so that when Pennyworth comes down you can inform him of the situation.”
He looked down at himself and frowned. He was wearing a brightly colored shirt Pennyworth had purchased him, featuring a cartoon dog on the front. There was no way he could rescue Batman in that.
He hurried to the lockers and grabbed the first dark thing he could find, a black hoodie. It turned out to not be solid, but had a Nightwing emblem splashed across the front. The sleeves were also too long, but Damian easily rolled those up, before tugging the hood over his hair. Then he grabbed an extra domino mask and affixed it to his face. Lastly, he grabbed one of Drake’s Robin belts. Grayson had made Damian take inventory of the belt a number of times to get familiar with its contents, and he was confident it was small enough to fit him. It also would have medical supplies and weapons to defend himself if the situation called for it. He didn’t bother changing out of his black jeans or tennis shoes, both would do fine for the rescue mission.
Through his quick change, he ignored Oracle’s requests for more information, and demands that he stay right there and send Alfred instead. Damian respected Pennyworth, but he didn’t want to waste time.
Besides, this was partially his fault, and he was the only one who really knew how to fly the Batmobile. It would be the fastest way to reach Grayson.
Damian was quite proud of his achievement. After growing bored of exploring the cave systems, and discovered some of Father’s schematics and future plans to make his car fly and had taken to making those plans a reality. He had even gotten permission to work on it. Grayson had happily supplied not only permission, but any supplies he needed when Damian had asked. He was further encouraged by the fact that the man had come downstairs to sit with him a few times. However, it was Damian's project and he was most familiar with the systems. He had not even had time to tell anyone that he’d actually managed to get it to fly.
Gordon must have called Pennyworth, because Damian spotted the man hurrying down the stairs as he climbed into the car.
“Master Damian, wait!” he called.
Damian ignored the request, closing the door, and starting the engine. He felt a little bad for ignoring Pennyworth, but time was of the essence and he needed to get to Grayson. He hoped Pennyworth would not be too upset with him as he raced past the man and out the exit, but he would have to understand just how important this was. There was no time left to dally if he were to stop something bad from happening to the man he was beginning to consider family.
A few meters out of the cave, Damian hit the button to begin the car’s flying sequence. After a brief moment of panic that it would not work, slowly but surely it lifted off, and Damian's shoulders relaxed minutely. Soon he was zooming over trees and streets, and obstacles that would have cut into the time it took to get to Grayson’s location.
He fretted as he flew, his mind coming up with every terrible thing that could happen, his stomach growing sicker at each thought. Most of all, he couldn't stop thinking about why he was betraying every house rule to rush out and save Grayson.
When had he really started to care about him? When had it become more than his just using the man to learn more about his Father? He’d come to respect Grayson quickly, that was certain. But this sick feeling of worry was one Damian had only held for his mother on the rare occasion she was late returning from a dangerous mission.
Damian tolerated Brown and Todd and Cain, but Grayson? He looked forward to seeing the man. Had come to enjoy his smiles, and even put up with his nicknames. They were warm, like a blanket wrapped around his shoulders when he was tired, or a coat on a cold day.
It was stupid. And weak. And foolish. Feelings like this were compromising, they would get him killed. Make him run headlong into danger without a thought for himself, much like he was doing now. But Damian found he didn’t care about being weak in that sense. It hurt to imagine not caring about Grayson. And so he fretted. He fretted and worried and ignored the pinging of a message from Oracle.
That sick feeling in Damian’s chest exploded into awful panic as Main Street finally came into view and he caught sight of what used to be Wonderland, now a smoking wreck, collapsed in on itself.
He held his emotions in check long enough to take the car down, right onto the street and bolt out of it.
“Batman!” he yelled, bolting for the wreckage “Where are you?”
Damian should not be panicking. Panic made one miss things, it made them sloppy. But Batman had been in the building. It had blown up. He could be--Grayson might be--
No. Grayson would be fine. Damian would find him, and get him home, and he would be fine.
He scanned the rubble of the building, and yelled for Batman again, his voice raspy in the smoke billowing around. Belatedly he remembered the domino was equipped with some basic alternate vision options, Damian poked at it until it showed heat signatures.
It didn’t look like the building had caught fire, thank goodness, but there was a large area of warmth towards where the back would have been that radiated out into other areas.
“Batman!” he called again, vision slowly creeping across rubble.
He had no idea how deep the lenses would penetrate. Some parts of the rubble were raised higher than others, like they’d all fallen in that direction, while others were spars, bits and pieces here and there still showing the floor that had once been inside.
“Here.” the word was faint, and trailing at the end, but it gave Damian hope.
He jerked his attention towards the sound, and there! A figure, the heat registering as cooler than Damian wanted it to be, but that could have been the weather or injury or just rubble blocking it. Whatever it was, he bolted in it’s direction, only turning off the filter when he was close enough to clearly see Batman.
He was on his back, partially trapped under fallen drywall. Damian had missed him on his first glance due to the drywall’s angle, tilted up and slightly against Grayson to block him from proper view.
“Batman!” He called again, and started climbing over the rubble as carefully as he could without risking dislodging something and shifting the whole pile, “I am on my way.”
His heart was racing. He was terrified, he realized. Afraid of what he’d find. Afraid of what had happened. Afraid to be too late, even now.
When he reached Batman, he dropped to his knees to examine him. The most obvious injury was the blood that seeped out from under his cowl. Everything else was hidden under the fallen drywall.
“Batman, I am going to have to lift this, brace yourself.” he said.
“Nightwing?” Grayson asked, the word slurring, “What?”
Damian looked down at his hoodie and the Nightwing emblem emblazoned on it, “Oh. No, you idiot. It is me. Now hold still while I lift this.”
He leaned forward, and gripped the drywall to lift it. It was lighter than Damian imagined it to be, but still quite heavy. When he got it up high enough, he shifted to shove his shoulder under it to help him leverage it even higher and then away, angled just far enough that his brother’s body was revealed.
“Scoot back.” Damian grunted.
Thankfully, Grayson seemed to have enough sense to listen. He dragged himself back from Damian and the drywall, moving just far enough that after a moment, Damian let the whole thing drop again with a crash.
His shoulder ached, but he had more important things to worry about than it. He quickly examined Batman, the suit on Grayson’s right thigh had been torn open by something, and his leg was slowly oozing blood. The wound did not seem to be serious enough for Damian to stop and take care of it now, so instead he focused on getting the man home for a full check up and proper medical attention.
He leaned over to take Grayson by the arm, “Come, we are leaving.”
He hauled his brother up onto unsteady legs. Grayson stood for a few seconds before slumping. He would have fallen if Damian hadn’t caught him, still the man was much taller than him, and carrying him was going to be difficult.
“This is not going to be comfortable, Batman.” Damian said, “But we will make it work.”
He tugged one of Grayson’s arms over his shoulder, and gripped the back of Batman's utility belt as tightly as he could under the cape to help hoist him up, and then started forward. He was basically dragging Grayson as they moved, and because of that he could not be as careful moving across the rubble. Thankfully, he was not worried about further crushing his brother, so the only real obstacle was tripping or dislodging something so that he fell into a hole.
Grayson seemed to come a bit back to himself, at least enough to speak, “But I’m Nightwing?”
Damian shook his head, “No, as I explained, you are Batman, I am--” he dreaded having to use the nickname, “Lil’ D.”
His brother shook his head, “No, no, I’m Nightwing. Batman is--Bruce is--”
“Grayson, Father is-- he is gone.” Damian said, “You are Batman now.”
That was the wrong thing to say because it made Grayson try to pull away from his grip. He was confused, and hurting, which added some strength to his attempts and threatened to topple them both.
“No!” Grayson cried, “I don’t want to be Batman. I never-- I don’t have to because Bruce is.”
His attempts to get away from Damian finally succeeded in making Damian slip, a stone dislodged from under his foot, and then the ground disappeared and Damian fell down, then to the side. He lost his grip on Grayson, and landed hard on his already aching shoulder.
Behind him, he heard rumbling as the structure shifted. He felt the vibrations under his palms as he pushed himself up, to spin and search for his brother.
Grayson had landed on his knees, and was staring down at the bat on his chest, one hand brushing over it.
“Father is dead, Grayson.” Damian snapped, as he stepped over to lift Grayson again.
“That is why you are Batman, now act like it and pull yourself together for a moment.”
Normally, he would not have cared about being so brusque, but even with the cowl covering most of his face the effect of Damian’s words on Grayson was obvious. He looked like a kicked puppy. It twisted Damian’s heart, but he couldn’t waste time on feelings. He needed to get Grayson home, first and foremost. Then worry about the hurt his words caused.
He managed to drag Grayson off the rubble and back to the car. It took some work to get him settled in the passenger’s seat, but Grayson had stopped fighting him, and was mostly responsive to directions.
It did not take long for Grayson to pass out once they were moving. Damian tried to wake him, but there was no autopilot function build into the flying portion of the car yet --he had that on his list of activities for next week-- so he had to focus on getting them home, and hoping that Grayson would be fine.
He did phone the Batcave to update Pennyworth on their status. The butler’s anger was quickly set aside for worry, and a flood of questions about Grayson’s condition. Damian did his best to describe it, and estimate an arrival time.
Pennyworth took over when Damian finally parked. He went from being in command of the situation to following whatever directions were aimed at him, and he did so happily. Grayson had woken again when they moved him from the car, and was now babbling about Father. He was alternating between asking where he was and crying over losing him.
The guilt Damian had been able to ignore earlier came back at those words, and he felt terrible for snapping at his brother. He felt even worse that he could not seem to muster any grief over his father. Not in the same way Grayson was feeling it now. He was too concerned about his brother. His not quite partner who he’d almost lost tonight. Who had been out because of a Father who was not there. Who was alone because of a father Drake was still searching for. Who was now crying out for that same father.
He did his best to ignore the strange twist of emotions in his chest and help Pennyworth instead. He collected blankets, lifted Grayson’s head, and handed over bandages as they were requested.
Damian finally stopped moving when Grayson was at last sleeping and settled into a medical cot. He could not leave Grayson, no matter how conflicted looking at the man made him. So Damian settled in a chair and declared he’d keep an eye on him while Pennyworth got some rest.
He tugged his legs up, onto the chair, so he could wrap his arms around them, and rested his chin on his knees. Somewhere in all the chaos, the sleeves of his borrowed hoodie had slipped down, and fallen over his hands to flop. Damian didn’t bother re-rolling them, but instead enjoyed the way they gave him a feeling of being further wrapped up, snuggled in something tight and comforting.
Sitting there, his odd feelings from earlier returned. He called them odd because he had not had time to pick at the strange ball of emotion in his chest and sort out what it all meant.
There was irritation with himself over this attachment. He could hear mother’s voice in his head, chiding him and reminding him that love was a weakness. That caring about others only held one back. She was right of course, Damian had thrown all caution to the wind, disobeyed Pennyworth, and Oracle and run headlong after Grayson over a hunch. It had been correct, but even that was neither here nor there in consideration of the danger it had posed.
The caring itself was another factor Damian turned over in his head, like he had turned the batarangs Grayson had shown him how to sharpen in his hands. Love, or at the very least, like, was dangerous. It was sharp, like the ends of the batarang, and would cut him if he was not careful, but it was also warm, like Grayson’s words had been. Gentle like his hands had felt in adjusting Damian’s grip. Something soft and happy like Damian’s heart had felt at Grayson’s praise.
Damian looked back down at his brother. Grayson’s arms were laid out on top of the light blanket covering him. One hand was already showing bruising, ugly black and blue splotches where he must have raised them in defense. The bruises flowed down his forearm, and ended in a bullseye on his elbow. It made Damian wince just imagining it.
He released his hold on his legs and brushed a hand across the back of Grayson's palm, considering taking it in his own. Then the man groaned, and shifted, his hand slipping away from Damian's feather light grasp. He swallowed, and wrapped his arm back around his legs to grab his other hand, before resting his chin on his knees to continue his vigil.

Connor Murphy Headcanons
he has two middle names : larry, after his father, and james, after his mom’s dad.
he has baby wipes and chewing gums in his nightstand for the days he’s too mentally exhausted to take a shower and brush his teeth.
he thinks he has high-functioning autism, but he has too little information and not enough fucks to give to look more deeply into this.
he ! needs ! stimulation ! he needs sound and vibrations and colors to ground him and make sure he isn’t dissociating.
on the other hand, too much stimulation makes him feel on edge and it’s always a lot of work to maintain the balance between numb and hyperaware - a work he rarely has the patience to do.
his original hair color is very close to zoe’s, but he’s a stubborn bastard who wants to make a point so he’s been dying them for the last five years.
it’s also incredibly fluffy when he has the time and energy to brush it.
he can do handstands.
he and zoe used to take gym classes together when they were younger, and while he’s too out of shape to do wheels or backflips, he can still do handstands without much effort.
he has selective memory : he can quote more than 500 vines from the top of his head, but has no idea when WWII started.
the little prince and alice in wonderland are his childhood favorite books. then he got his hands on terry pratchett and ooooh boy.
(he has a soft spot for death in discworld.)
zombies ! he like pop culture zombies. they’re trash and they’re gore and they’re his favorite creatures.
his music taste includes, but is not limited to :

he never was much of a gamer but ? minecraft ? that was the good shit. he’s sure he still has his very first map somewhere in his crappy laptop.
speaking of his laptop, it’s covered in sharpie drawings and half-unsticked stickers.
his weed is stashed in a cardboard box under his bed with his previous years’ notebooks, and the layer of dust is his indicator to know if anyone found it or not.
he keeps all his notebooks since... as far as he can remember. sometimes he opens one of them and laughs at the sarcastic little notes he wrote in the margins.
his favorite of all times is from 4th grade. there’s an empty page between two full of doodles, and in the middle of it, written very very tiny : bitch.
he gets very tired very quickly. it’s like his internal battery just. goes flat. as soon as he gets invested in something. brain.exe stopped working.
he has a fidget cube and a finger twister in his hoodie’s pocket.
he actually has several fidget toys hiding all over the place, but these two are the ones he keeps on him at all times.
absurd humor is his jam. he’s particularly fan of reaction pics with the caption cropped out.
he makes typos when he’s under pressure.
DO NOT get him started on political subjects unless you’re willing to sit on your ass for hours and listen to him rant about everything wrong with the american system
given enough time and fuel (granola bars usually do the trick) it will always go back to capitalism and supremacy
he is paranoid. he knows that, his parents know that, zoe knows that, hell, evan of all people knows that. it doesn’t mean he’s anywhere near able to keep it in check, though.
it always takes him way too long to calm down and look at things in perspective, and by the time he does that he’s already hurt someone.
he has a thing for spiderman. it’s everywhere in his stuff if you know where to look.
evan challenged himself to find every single spidey merch in his room, but he’s still far from finding all of it (connor is definitely not telling him about the old pair of boxers at the bottom of his drawer).
when he’s confined somewhere - school, his room - he daydreams about getting in his car and drive until everything is calmer in his head.
in the same fashion, he’ll start running out of the blue and just... go. somewhere, anywhere as long as he can stop thinking so loudly.
he has one (1) plant in his room. it’s a little ceropegia woodii that evan gave him at some point, insisting on the fact that connor really had to want it dead for it to peg out.
connor makes a point of watering it once a week. it’s, oddly enough, one of the only things he can’t seem to forget easily. plus, he likes the little chain of heart-shaped leaves on his shelf.
his top three movies of all time are hidden figures, the imitation game and bohemian rhapsody.
sometimes at night when he can’t sleep because his thoughts are too loud and his room gets too stifling, he goes to sit in the hallway and listens to the house breathing in the dark. it calms him immediately.
when it’s not enough, he goes to sit on the porch and wait for the sun to rise behind the trees and doesn’t go back inside before he’s absolutely certain another day has come.
(and it makes everything okay, somehow, because the sun will always rise, and connor feels less desperate. less like he’s about to fall and never get up.)
(connor never falls. it’s sometimes very damn close, but he holds onto the seconds and every one of his breaths, and things are okay again before he realizes it.)
he and zoe still have a chaotic relationship that involves a lot of shouting and door-slamming, but he knows they’re doing better. it’s not perfect, and it probably never will be, but they’re working hard on their communication issues and it shows.
he’s weirdly territorial when it comes to his room : its is his space, and the doorway is the limit, and you have to ask to come in, dammit. it’s not that hard, larry.
evan always knocks. connor told him he could stop, because connor has nothing to hide from him (except a pair of boxers), but evan stubbornly keeps knocking every time he comes over. he’s says it’s good education, but connor knows it’s because evan, deep down, is a bastard who doesn’t like being wrong.
he has rituals - he doesn’t want to call it superstition, because he doesn’t really believe in this kind of thing, but he feels uncomfortable if he doesn’t execute them. his most recurrent ones are :
twisting his hair tie three times around his wrist before tying his hair so it doesn’t break
walking systematically inside the patterns on the ground
drumming a beat with his foot and his fingers to make time go faster
aligning anything lingering in front of him
notching every desk he sits at to see if they’re moved around
by extension, sitting specifically at his approved desks on bad days so he doesn’t get more irritated than he already is
he is weak to sleepy evan. don’t get him wrong, he likes every version of evan - sarcastic, pleased, blushing, soft, angry, self-deprecating, laughing - but sleepy evan is just... something else entirely.
the first night evan spends at the murphy’s they watch documentaries on his laptop until late, and they’re so captivated that it takes connor’s arm growing numb for him to notice evan asleep over his shoulder.
(connor doesn’t move for another half-hour, but he eventually has to pee and the sleepy, confused face evan gives him as he get up is just too much for his heart to handle.)
(and it will take him a long time to handle, he knows, but there’s no rush.)
(the sun will still rise tomorrow.)

We hope you're all excited about @harrydracobang in 2018! As it's 6 November we thought there is no better time to celebrate past Big Bang fics than with a post-Bonfire Night H/D Big Bang rec list. We have chosen a handful of some of our favourite Big Bang stories for you to enjoy during the winter nights, whether you read them on your way to see some fireworks or as you're eating toffee apples and drinking mulled cider. We have also included a bit of fanlore history about each of the challenges.
The rec list has been compiled by @capipuff, @gracerene09 and @writcraft who all agreed on a few stories we loved from past H/D Big Bangs. In truth it's very hard to pick just a selection so do check out the other brilliant stories which posted as part of these fests and browse through the artist galleries which are absolutely beautiful.
Big Bang, Baby
Big Bang, Baby was devised by moderators Aja, Reena and Shaggy as a challenge to authors to write the definitive post-Order of the Phoenix H/D fic. An invitation only fest which first posted in 2005, the challenge would go on to lend its name to a host of other Big Bangs across multiple fandom platforms, defined by the emphasis on novella length fic (50,000 minimum in the case of Big Bang, Baby) and an explosion of fic and art which all posted on the same day. The challenge ran for two further years, with the post-Half-Blood Prince edition in 2006 and the Last Bang in 2007.

This is one of those stories that gets talked about a lot, and rightly so. It is heartbreaking and gorgeously crafted. The writing is superb and the story unfolds brilliantly.
During the war, Draco's mind was tortured beyond limits, and he has now the awareness of a child. The story moves back and forth, from Harry and Draco at Hogwarts during their sixth year, fighting constantly, literally and bloodily, to the start of their relationship, to the present, with Draco in a child-like condition.
It's painful, very much so, Harry is so lonely and Draco is broken and their relationship is so vividly captured. Harry lives a half-life, half real live and half the live he imagines in his mind. It's beautiful though, and as shocking as some parts are, it's a gorgeous story, and if you read it, and you should, it will stay with you for a long time.
Reparo by Amalin
This is a wonderfully long and enjoyable eighth year fic. It's a really character-driven fic as opposed to a complex plot, and there's a lot of Harry/Draco interaction, and without Voldemort in the picture it definitely takes on an aspect of pigtail-pulling. There are all these moments that are awkward and hilarious and sort of sweet, and really, it was a delight to read.
They go through all of it, the fighting, bickering, obsessing about each other, then seeking each other's company, and the whole time you know the tension is building to something glorious and you just can't wait to get there.
The thing about Reparo is that it really does feel like a way their relationship could start. It wouldn't be that one day they wake up and realize they've been in love with each other all along. They will fight, and get on each other's nerves, and then they will crash and clash, and then they will snog and not be able to keep their hands off each other. And they might not be able to say they want each other and love each other, but they won't be able to stay away and it's obvious just how good they are together.
The art on this story is also really incredible. We really recommend you take the time and go all of it because the art is gorgeous.
Boys Don't Cry by @furiosity and Pixies
This is a brilliant example of one of those fics where Draco is Harry's prisoner and the two are forced into close quarters together as a result. It's got drama, a very confused Harry, and Draco being the source of this confusion.
The first part is written in Harry's POV, the second part in Draco's and both are fantastically crafted. There are some sexy, hot scenes and a the AU is a lot of fun. A very enjoyable read that is difficult to put down.
Big Bang: Erised
Modelled after Big Bang, Baby and set up with permission from the Big Bang, Baby moderators, Big Bang: Erised went live in 2011 and was moderated by @phoenixacid, melusinahp and @vaysh11 Consistent with the original Big Bang, Baby, Big Bang: Erised was a Harry/Draco Big Bang with a 50,000 minimum word count and was hosted on an external website. Everything posted in one day. Unlike Big Bang, Baby, the fest was open to all who wanted to participate rather than invitation only.
Long Hours of Constant Darkness by kinky_kneazle
This is such an excellent story. There's not only this beautiful relationship between Harry and Draco starting from scratch but the plot is super interesting as well. They meet after all these years and, of course, there's all this distrust between them. However, Harry is sent to Antarctica, as a part of Luna's team, which Draco is also a part of, and under those circumstances you can't afford to be suspicious of a colleague. And so there's a truce of sorts, and then a tentative friendship, and then so much more. It's beautifully written.
The descriptions of their journey, the magic and nature they encounter, how it changes Harry, who is going there filled with grief because of what he thinks is a betrayal from one of his closest friends.
The way they grow, the way they open to each other, even the way they fight and are jealous and behave like children because though they may be adults now, they are scared of this thing that's started between them.
It's really a beautiful story and there's such amazing fanart going along with the story. The gist of the plot that ties all this together you can get from the summary, but it becomes so much more than that. A life changing experience, for both of them, for the best.
Harry Bang
The last Big Bang with a significant number of H/D works in the Harry Potter fandom ran in 2015. Moderated by @writcraft and @mab-speaks, it was open to all who wanted to participate and like Big Bang, Baby and Big Bang: Erised it had a 50,000 word minimum requirement and everything posted on the same day. It was hosted on Livejournal and Archive of Our Own and unlike Big Bang, Baby and Big Bang: Erised it was not ship specific. It was designed to tell Harry-centric stories. The majority of the stories were Harry/Draco but there were also several Harry/Severus and Harry/Ginny fics and a Harry/Oliver fic. As this comm focuses on H/D, the recs are both H/D fics.
Right Hand Red by @lqtraintracks
This was such a brilliant, brilliant read. It's an eighth year fic, which your mods have a particular fondness for, and they aren't something you see much of in big bangs.
From the beginning, Harry and Draco meeting at Madam Malkin's for the first time after the war, seeing them back at Hogwarts, seeing them change and grow and be the people they were meant to be, or maybe the people the war made them.
And at the same time, it's such a fun story, there's so much UST - God, so much! (later resolved, and boy, in what a way!), the want, the glances, kisses and touches. The premise revolves around party games, which is super fun. It starts with a Twister game, then with Spin the Bottle and finally Truth or Dare. And through this, we see Harry and Draco having this thing, flirting with a relationship, conflicts and ache and sorrow and healing and happiness, and it's beautiful.
Harry’s voice here was especially fabulous, seeing him notice Malfoy and come to terms with his feelings, and then watching him and Draco become closer was just wonderful. The party games were super fun, and the side characters were really such a wonderful addition. Not to mention the smoking hot sex and the beyond gorgeous artwork!
'Twas Brillig by Queenie_Mab (aka @mab-speaks)
Mab does such a wonderful job in this story exploring sexuality and gender dysphoria and creating a framework in the wizarding world where gender gets a full and thoughtful exploration from cross-dressing and drag to transgenderism and gender dysphoria. At the same time Harry comes to terms with his own orientation, accepting who he really is, and being brave enough to weather the storm when he decides to come clean to those he loves, as he learns more about his child and helps her find love and support.
The story starts with Harry reading his children Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and seeing Albus reaction to the story, in particular the request that her family call her Alice. At first Harry and Ginny think she's just playing, but they soon realise there's far more to it as they come to understand what she's been trying to tell them.
It's a story of acceptance and bravery, but also grapples with darker themes of homophobia, transphobia and the problems the characters in the fic encounter from outside sources.
It's a beautifully told story, Draco, Harry, Ginny and Alice are intricately woven and it's a satisfying journey of self-discovery as well as discovering more about other characters and adding complex layers to questions of love and identity. The scenes between Draco and Harry are scorching hot and the whole story does a marvellous jobs with some themes that don't often get such in-depth exploration in fic.

Epic Movie (Re)Watch #128 - The Wizard of Oz (1939)
Spoilers below.
Have I seen it before: Yes
Did I like it then: Yes.
Do I remember it: Yes.
Did I see it in theaters: No.
Format: Blu-ray
1) This film is a classic of American cinema. If you ever want to learn how to tell a slick story, watch this film. Because outside of one or two musical numbers, there is nothing in here that doesn’t need to be. It is all entertaining and slick.
2) Judy Garland’s iconic performance as Dorothy Gale.
In the original tale Dorothy was a pre-adolescent eight year old, where as Garland was 16 upon playing Dorothy. They had to have her in a tight corset to keep her boobs under wraps. Now that I’ve said that fun anecdote...
Garland is pretty great as Dorothy. She is able to perfectly capture her childlike wonder, heart, and innocence in a way which makes the audience feel like a kid. It brings us into this world of youth and fairytales through a compelling and fun character. Dorothy comes off as compassionate and loyal, and while a bit of a damsel towards the end we understand that she is just a child who is thrust into this world and desperately is trying to get back home. Garland is perfect in the role and the film needs her to be as iconic as it is.
3) The decision to have various characters and lines (“Well your head ain’t made of straw you know!”) be echoed in Oz gives the film a sense of magical realism (a literary genre or style associated especially with Latin America that incorporates fantastic or mythical elements into otherwise realistic fiction). I would not go far enough to call the film an example of that genre, but it definitely has some of those elements.
4) “Over the Rainbow”
Without a doubt THE most iconic song in the film. In my opinion there are two songs from cinema which perfectly capture a child’s imagination: “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory and “Over the Rainbow” from this film. The song was almost cut from the film, with studio heads fearing it would bore kids! Can you even imagine? The film’s light melody and childlike innocence is what truly carries it. It connects with anyone who has ever longed for someplace better, for a far off land filled with adventure and intrigue. Garland’s vocals do the beautiful composition amazing justice, making the two inseparable. Honestly, it’s THE moment from the film and the movie hasn’t even gone to color yet!
5) The relationship with Dorothy and Toto is wonderfully strong. I wonder if there’s a backstory to that. Like maybe Toto was a gift to her from her late parents or something like that. Either way, any dog lover will appreciate it.
6) The fact that Professor Marvel (played by Frank Morgan, who later plays the titular Wizard) is a total phony doesn’t have so much weight the first time you watch this film. It does however become wildly important after the film’s end. Also the fact that Dorothy is so quick to believe speaks wildly to her youthful innocence.
7) It took me a while to realize why Dorothy is so desperate to return home when she has a whole song about wanting to be elsewhere, and only recently did I realize why. She thinks her Auntie Em is sick! Professor Marvel told her that her running away made her sick and heartbroken, and it is this belief and love for her family which drives her through the rest of the film.
8) Dorothy looking out the window in the middle of the twister has some wonderful sight gags.

9) The transition from a sepia tone world to a color one is remarkably seamless. Credit to the director, cinematographer, and editor(s?) who worked on this film for that. Bravo.
10) One of the reasons the film is such a classic is largely because of its wonderful imagery. All of Oz is wonderful fantasy, using the brightness of technicolor to its full advantage and creating a storybook world that appeals to the eyes of children and adults everywhere. The entire color palette is like that of a rainbow, something very fitting considering the main song of this film.

Glinda [upon meeting Dorothy]: “Are you a good which, or a bad witch?”
Oh, if only it were that simple.

Glinda [after she hears Dorothy’s opinion that all witches are ugly]: “Only bad witches are ugly.”
Beauty’s in the eye of the beholder, dude.
13) While watching this film I kinda thought Glinda was being a little TOO chipper, and that the ready celebration of death was a bit odd. Then I remembered a fan theory which painted the supposed Good Witch of the North as the villain. Read at your own risk of childhood ruining.
14) I don’t love this film as much as others, although I do admit its pretty damn great. So it’s at risk of offending the purists out there that I say I think the whole Munchkinland song goes on a little too long. Also some of the Munchkins - probably because of their costumes - freak me out. Mainly the Lollipop Guild.
15) THE WICKED WITCH OF THE WEST!!!!
She’s so freaking evil, I love it! The Wicked Witch of the West is one of the most iconic film villains of all time, possibly even more iconic than some legends as Darth Vader. Margaret Hamilton plays the Witch with DELIGHTFUL villainy! You can tell she’s having a lot of fun in the part and we as the audience are having fun because of it. The Witch is simultaneously both in line with the stories we hear as children while at times being truly threatening. Even as an adult there are times I go, “holy cow, this woman is EVIL!!!!!!” That is amazing to me. Hamilton was a fan of the books and was delighted to hear she was being considered for a part, and that enthusiasm just infects ever green skin cell of this baddie. Some stories are only as good as their villain, and The Wizard of Oz has an INCREDIBLE villain.
16) The Ruby Slippers.
In the original story the slippers were silver, but the filmmakers changed it to ruby in order to take full advantage of the technicolor process. These days the ruby slippers are such an iconic piece of film that there’s a pair in the Smithsonian institute. Just like everything else in Oz, it captures our imaginations totally and completely.
17) Follow the Yellow Brick Road.
Okay, but what happens if you follow the Red Brick Road? Am I the only one curious about that? Where does the Red Brick Road lead? Wonderland? Neverland? Cleveland? CAN WE GET A SPINOFF ANSWERING THIS QUESTION PLEASE!?!?!?
18) The Scarecrow.
(Let’s all take a moment to realize how relevant and awesome that line is in 2017.)
Out of the trio, the Scarecrow may well be my favorite. He is just so sweet and kind, despite of (or because of?) his naivety. Some fun slapstick comes about from his character, and...I don’t know what else. For some undefinable reason he’s just my favorite of the bunch!
19) This film does have some nice humor.
Dorothy [after interpreting the rusted Tin Man’s words]: “He said oil can.”
Scarecrow: “Oil can what?”
20) According to IMDb:
Ray Bolger was originally cast as the Tin Man. However, he insisted that he would rather play the Scarecrow--his childhood idol Fred Stone had originated that role on stage in 1902. Buddy Ebsen had been cast as the Scarecrow, and now switched roles with Bolger. Unbeknownst to him, however, the make-up for the Tin Man contained aluminum dust, which ended up coating Ebsen's lungs. He also had an allergic reaction to it. One day he was physically unable to breathe and had to be rushed to hospital. The part was immediately recast and MGM gave no public reason why Ebsen was being replaced. The actor considered this the biggest humiliation he ever endured and a personal affront. When Jack Haley took over the part of the Tin Man, he wasn't told why Ebsen had dropped out (and in the meantime, the Tin Man make-up was changed from aluminum dust to aluminum paste as one of its key components). However, his vocals remain whenever the song "We're off to see the Wizard" is played. Jack Haley's vocals were never used during the song, but were used for "If I Only Had a Heart" and "If I Only Had the Nerve." Ebsen's vocals are also heard in the extended version of "If I were King of the Forest," though the spoken segment has Jack Haley. Although no Ebsen footage from the film has ever been released, surviving still photos show him taking part in the Wicked Witch's castle sequence.
21) The various reprises of “If I Only Had _____” (A Brain/A Heart/The Nerve) are some of my favorite songs in the film. Not only is the tune itself sweet and memorable, but they each serve as slick simple introductions to each character’s core conflict.
22) Lions and tigers and bears, oh my! I don’t have anything to say about that line I just wanted to include it in my recap post.
23) Although the Scarecrow is probably my favorite of the trio, the Cowardly Lion is the funniest I think.
The idea of his cowardice allows for a great amount of physical humor and humor in his dialogue. He’s the comic relief in an already very funny and sweet cast.
24) Apparently the actors playing the trio of characters would often show boat and try to steal the scenes from one another, to the point where the director (or whichever director was working that day, as this film had a lot) had to shout at them to let Judy Garland be the star because it was her story.
25) Man, these guys get to the poppy field WAY sooner than I remember!
I also didn’t remember that it got resolved by “Deus Ex Glinda” just casting a magical spell to kill all the poppies with snow. Which is weird considering it should be one of the most memorable scenes in the film.
26) Frank Morgan - the actor who played The Wizard and Professor Marvel - also plays the sentry in Emerald City, the coach driver in the city, and a third guard in the city. Now that we know of The Wizard’s tricky ways, I wonder if all three of these are not meant to be the same character.
27) There are parts in the Emerald City sequence I find a little on the lengthy side, a little superfluous. The songs where all of Dorothy’s squad is getting treated well is fine, it’s short enough. But I totally forget about the entire “King of the Forrest” number any time I watch the film and honestly don’t think the film needs it. But that’s just me.
28) I think part of the Witch’s truly threatening nature is through the strong visuals this film uses. “Surrender Dorothy” is a particularly memorable sight, as black ash fills the sky of an otherwise happy place.
29) I will say though, even though I find the whole “King of the Forrest” song a bit pointless, it does have this nice bit:
Lion: What makes a king out of a slave? Courage! What makes the flag on the mast to wave? Courage! What makes the elephant charge his tusk in the misty mist, or the dusky dusk? What makes the muskrat guard his musk? Courage! What makes the sphinx the seventh wonder? Courage!
30) Probably the time the Lion is at his funniest is when the group is approaching The Wizard.

32) Where the heck did the Scarecrow get a gun? Where’d the Tin Man get a giant wrench?
This movie is weird. I love that.
33) The Flying Monkeys!
Another example of incredible imaginative imagery.
34) Okay so...why does the Witch want the slippers? I mean we have theories in all OTHER forms of Wizard of Oz media. They belonged to her sister, they have the power to jump worlds, she wants a little color in her wardrobe, but the film itself never gives a reason. She just WANTS them.
35) I always really appreciated the devotion the three friends had when going to rescue Dorothy. I don’t know, it just sort of moves me the friendship they were able to craft in such a short time.
36) So this scene with the guards singing:

I did a production of Our Town YEARS ago and there was this girl in the cast who said she grew up thinking these guys were chanting, “Oreo! O-RE-o!” Which, you know, makes sense. That was funny enough on it’s own. Then Wreck-It Ralph came out...

37) For some reason “Night on Bald Mountain” plays as Scarecrow, Lion, and Tin Man go to rescue Dorothy from the which. Because why not, I guess.
38) The fact that water melts the witch - while iconic - sort of comes from nowhere. Was there something earlier in the film that was supposed to foreshadow this? It’s very Deus Ex Machina.
39) The Wizard revealed!
A for effort dude.
40) The scene where The Wizard is handing out the gifts for everyone (a diploma for Scarecrow which works as a brain, the “heart” for Tin Man, a medal for lion) is very funny. Frank Morgan benefits from his fast talking yet sincere nature.
Scarecrow [after receiving his gift]: “How can I ever thank you enough?”
The Wizard: “Well, you can’t.”
And then I love this too.
Dorothy [after The Wizard talks about getting here in a runaway hot air balloon]: “Weren’t you frightened?”
The Wizard: “Frightened? Child, you're talking to a man who's laughed in the face of death, sneered at doom, and chuckled at catastrophe... I was petrified.”
41) I either don’t understand the lesson here or I do and I dislike it. Dorothy has this line of how if she ever wants something again, she’ll just look in her backyard because “there’s no place like home.” While I appreciate the sentiment of, “There’s no place like home,” the idea of home is not defined by the place you grow up in. It’s the place where you feel the most safe, the most comfortable, the place you miss when you’re not there. It’s usually defined by people, not location. Good people who treat you well. So while Dorothy does have that back in Kansas, the line about her backyard throws me.
The Wizard of Oz is a classic and for good reason. It’s colorful and vibrant imagery will stick with children of all ages, and through all its parts combined it just captures the imagination of childhood perfectly. It’s mostly pure, innocent, but not in a naive or babyish way. It’s an entertaining treat everyone should see at least once.
