October 16th and 17th - Mind Control and Breaking Point - Azul, Jamil, and Yuu
Characters: Azul, Jamil, Yuu, Jade, Floyd, Grim, Kalim (mentioned)
CW// mind control/manipulation, burns, stabbing, fighting, violence, whump in general, begging, “Master”, CHAPTER 4 SPOILERS
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Azul cried out as he desperately clutched his head, nails digging in. The pain swam, muffling his senses. His eyes were scrunched shut and he grunted, staggering away.
Jamil’s eyes tracked him, charcoal tracing Azul.
“The pain will only get worse the longer you resist.”
Azul gulped, glancing up to glare at Jamil. He shuddered out a breath as he felt everything begin to go numb, his vision swimming into a red haze. The pressure of a mind shoving his own down was too much to bare.
Jamil grinned wickedly as Azul’s finally relaxed, all tension relieved as he stared blankly at him.
“You severely miscalculated. A shameful error for the Housewarden of Octavinelle- but it’s no matter. You’re going to take the twins and go back under the sea where you belong…” he murmured
Azul watched him, the conscious part of his mind slipping further and further into Jamil’s grip. He needed Jade to come soon, or else he might not be able to fight back at all.
“Azul, is it true that you recently returned a large amas of powers back to your debtors?”
“Yes, Master.” He said, blinking lazily.
“So much for using you as my personal genie of the lamp…”
Azul gulped, the last part of his mind being tamped down as Jamil kept monologuing. He would have felt fear - perhaps he did - but he was far too gone to register it.
——-
Jade stepped around the corner, “And there we have it.”
Jamil turned, stepping back to turn and glare at the sudden intrusion. Upon seeing a group huddled just around the corner, he went pale in the face.
“So you finally show your true colors!” Grim yelled, “I bet you thought you were real slick, pulling the wool over our eyes!”
He stared a moment, “How…how much did you hear?” He finally stuttered out, panic seeping its way on to his face.
“All of it, from start to finish.” Jade said with a tiny smirk, tilting his head to the side just slightly. “Your entire conversation from the moment you left the lounge has been live-streamed to the world from Azul’s phone.”
Jamil spluttered, eyes going even wider, “What?!”
Jade smiled, “Azul’s magicam livestream presently has five thousand active viewers. It’s currently trending online under the topic ‘a certain magicians schools dirty little secret’.” He stepped forward slightly, towering over Jamil as he stepped further back. “It’s your moment in the sun, Vice Housewarden. Naturally, all the dorm students are gathered in the lounge, watching you.”
He stared down at Jamil, distain evident as the group of Scarabia students approached hesitantly.
“Vice Housewarden Jamil, is everything you just said true?”
“Have you really been deceiving us the whole time?”
“Talk about a wolf in sheeps clothing! You’re a fraud, through and through!” Grim said, glaring at Jamil.
“Y-you…” Jamil stared, eyes darting from student to student, “You’ve got it all wrong. I…”
Jade piped up, frowning as he crossed his arms. “Don’t even try to talk your way out of this one. The mind control magic you used on Azul is hard evidence. Jamil…” he turned, dropping his stance to stand straight. He had never looked so menacing in the year prior, as a freshman, and yet his disposition was enough to make every student squeak in fear. “It’s been you all along.” He accused, “You’ve been using your signature spell on Kalim and making him throw Scarabia into chaos!”
Jamil frowned, glaring right back. He glanced at Azul a moment, to find he did indeed look as dazed and blank as when he was first put under his spell.
“I was trying to avoid escalating matters, but you leave me no choice.” He turned to the entranced magician, voice even but furious at once. “Azul, I command you! Subdue and restrain them all.”
Azul stared back, jumping to life like a puppet. “…Yes, Master.” He finally said, approaching Jamil’s side.
Jade smirked slightly, expecting him to pull the rug out from under Jamil, though he soon frowned once again when he realized Azul was still moving toward them.
Azul raised his pen, pointing it directly at the Scarabian students.
“Azul, no.” Jade said, moving to grab his wrists, “You don’t want to do this. Snap out of it.”
“Pleading with him won’t help.” Jamil said smugly, eyes narrowing with malicious pleasure.
“Yes.” Azul said, staring blankly and red eyed at Jade. “I am loyal to my Master. Do not interfere with my orders.”
Jade gulped, eyes darting to Floyd, who stood behind him, looking just as concerned as he felt.
Yuu frowned, whispering something to Floyd as Grim backed away.
Azul wrenched himself away from Jade, immediately turning to sling a spell at him, eyes set course like a hurricane.
Ice shoots forward, knocking Jade back. An icicle was lodged in his shoulder, toxic blue blood pouring around the wound.
Jade yelped, in surprise more than pain, and Floyd jumped in front of him to give him time.
“Azul, knock it off, this isn’t funny.” Floyd said in his rad and deep voice.
Azul said nothing, instead raising his pen again.
Floyd frowned, letting out an irritated noise as he gripped his pen, forcing vines to grow from the ground and grab at Azul’s wrist.
The dorm leader easily snapped out of their hold before sending fire toward Floyd.
Jamil chuckled softly before he began to slink away. When he was nearly to the end of the hall, he called for Azul by whistling, much like one would a dog. And, much like a dog, Azul stopped what he was doing to turn and follow his master.
The twins paused. Jade was bleeding pretty heavily, and the ice was staining his skin with frost. Floyd didn’t have his signature spell - that was with Azul.
Yuu looked between them and realized that they weren’t really in a shape to deal with Azul. But still, they couldn’t just leave him.
Yuu glanced down the hall to see Azul just rounding the corner, and began to run after them. Jade called for them to stop, but couldn’t muster the strength to follow.
Yuu’s lungs heaved as they sprinted, trying to keep up with them. They caught up rather quickly, reaching out to grab Azul’s shoulder in desperation.
He was surprised as he turned, red eyes locking onto Yuu’s.
“Azul, c’mon. You’re stronger than this. You’re gonna let yourself be trapped by Jamil? You’re gonna bow down and kneel before him?”
Azul tilted his head slightly, raising his pen once again. “Jamil is my Master. I would do anything he asked.”
“Azul, please.” Yuu begged, “You know better. You can hear me, can’t you?”
He looked conflicted for a moment, but didn’t waver.
“Azul.” Jamil said, walking over, “We can’t have them following us. Deal with them, then come find me.”
Azul’s expression hardened again as he nodded gravely. “Yes, Master.”
Yuu frowned and gripped onto Azul in a tight hug, holding him. “Azul, please…”
They felt a searing pain in their abdomen, the smell of burning fabric and flesh at once hitting them. They looked up to find Azul staring blankly at them.
They looked down, spotting the fresh wound inflicted. The magestone of the pen was pressed against their flesh, searing it. They let go, only to be kicked back by Azul.
They saw a blur of teal pass them as Floyd pushed Azul away from Yuu, teeth bared. His pen in hand, he flung spells of all kinds at him.
“I was holdin’ back, but you hurt Jade, and then you hurt Shrimpy!”
Azul tried to avoid them to his best, retreating, but one spell was dead on for his chest.
He fired bind the heart.
Everything was still for a second. Floyd was shielding Yuu, holding them close as the sobbed silently into him. Jade and Kalim came around the corner, the smaller of the two supporting the merman.
Azul stared. Tears filled his eyes as he heard the whimpers, he felt the glares.
“I don- I don’t wanna do this anymore.” Yuu whimpered softly into Floyd’s chest. “I w-wanna go home. I don’t wanna do this…”
Azul stepped forward, earning a glare from everyone. He crouched down, frowning as he inspected the damage.
Yuu’s wound was deep, but cauterized. They weren’t bleeding, and it seemed to be mostly pain that was causing their symptoms.
He knelt down beside them, summoning some minor healing magic. It cooled the burn like water. He frowned as he stayed silent, healing their wound.
“I’m so, so sorry.” He finally said, then turned to Jade, “I don’t know what I did…I don’t remember it. But I…I know it was me. I think…”
Jade nodded solemnly, then said, “I believe we need to catch up to Jamil.”
“No.” Floyd said firmly, “Sea Snake made a run for it. Let ‘im get away, you’re still injured, and…” he looked to everyone, “We don’t need Azul under his control again.”

Día 4: Savanaclaw
#Twistedtober
—Dejamelo a mi señorita fantasma. —
El pequeño salió. —¡Aquí estoy!.—Alzo sus manos alegre, corriendo hacia Jack.
—Oh, el sobrino de Leona... No deberías estar solo ¿Sabes?.—
—Me encantará jugar contigo.—
—Y sabes algo...

Twisted Wonderland Whumptober
October 1st - Unconventional Restraints - Azul
Characters: Azul, Jade, Floyd, Yuu, Leona (mentioned), Ruggie (mentioned)
Cw// violence, cannibalism, biting, blood, suffocation, threats, mental breakdowns, low self esteem, whump.
Tumblr media
Ink dripped across the stone tile of Octavinelle’s underwater walkway. Azul’s face was pale, eyes wide and unseeing in his shock. He stared down at the golden sand scattered across the floor. He crouched down, lifting a handful loosely, watching it slip through his fingers. How apropos, he though to himself.
Leona stared down at him, smug grin across his face. Ruggie hovered beside him, snickering to himself at Azul’s misery.
Azul’s vision sharpened, and he removed his glasses. He neatly tucked them into his breast pocket, ignoring the way his white gloves were stained on the fingertips and palms with a mix of black and gold. It was stunning, in honesty, the contrast of each color.
He stood up slowly, taking in even deep breaths. In, out, in, out-
“Azul! What are you doing?!” Jade yelled, practically running toward him, Floyd and those… those…they were close behind.
“Whoa, yikes, what’s goin’ on here?” Floyd said in a casual tone, but the worry was evident.
“Jade, Floyd,” Azul breathed out in relief, “You’ve come back to me! Would you believe that thanks to these FOOLS, I’ve lost all my contracts?” He stifled down a whimper, gritting out, “Which is why I’m going to need your powers now. Come on, give them to me!” He cried, tears slipping desperately from his wide eyes.
“Hold on now,” Jade said, “Your signature spell is so powerful, it’s impossible to control without a contract scroll. You know better than anyone what will happen is you do this.” His eyes bore into Azul’s harsh and stern. There was concern in them, Azul could tell, but he didn’t want pity. He needed control. Was Jade feeling emboldened to turn against him because he was weak? Did he think he would roll over and play dead at his command? All this hard work, all this time taken over the years, down the drain, and now it seemed, Jade and Floyd would leave him next.
“But I lost it all, you see?” There as a bite to his words, “Everything! All gone…” tears kept pouring from his eyes, mixing with the black ink covering his hands, the same ink seeping through his gloves and his shirt and his blazer and coating him in a grayish-blue tint, head to toe, “You don’t understand, I’m going to revert to my old self if I don’t act now!”
“Yknow, Azul, I never saw you as lame before. But now? The way you’re actin’ is pretty lame.”
Worthless. Stupid. Clumsy. Slow. Fat. Crybaby. The words bounced around Azul’s brain, and a new one was added. Lame. It only confirmed his worst fears, the twins were leaving, he’d lost it all. Everything was gone.
“Ah, is that a fact?” He challenged, staring down Floyd. “I’m just a silly little octo-twerp who can’t do anything on his own.” Don’t leave me, please. “That’s why I’m going to take everyone’s powers. I will rise above your perceptions.” You don’t like me, you’re leaving me, please don’t leave me, please stay. “A beautiful singing voice,” could I have it on my own? “Powerful magics,” I’m not strong enough, “All of it, mine! Hand it all over at once!”
He felt something warm and cold at once take over him, sliding around his limbs like a shield of armor, dripping down into his eyes, coloring the lashes an even darker shade of black.
“What’s all that black gunk drippin’ out of Azul?” He heard faintly, “That ain’t ink, is it?”
Jade said something, but what it was, Azul couldn’t tell. He was to busy, laughing at their faces. So they had underestimated him, then? They thought he was weak, well…he would show them.
He felt his two legs splitting into eight, and the terrified looks of everyone around him. Ah, yes, there they were. The Ramshackle prefect, the one who had orchestrated this, hadn’t they? They made a deal with Leona, just as he had, then turned around to destroy his contracts? They were no better than him, in fact, they were ten times worse! No magic, no skills, no one to care about them, nothing.
The thick black appendage wraps around Yuu’s waist, squeezing tightly to the point of no air. Suckers stick to their clothes, causing them to be wet with slime. Yuu struggles and tries to push it away, to wriggle around for air, to hurt the monster gripping them, to no avail.
Any form of recognition of pain or sympathy from Azul is nowhere to be seen. His manic eyes and sadistic grin bore into Yuu’s soul as he lifts them up and slams them back down against the tile flooring of the octavinelle walkway.
It shattered from the force of being thrown, beneath Yuu. They were dazed, their vision was spotted with black and their head felt light. If anything broke, they couldn’t feel it through the daze of suffocation.
Azul yanked them back again, hissing in their ear, “You should have minded your own business. None of this would have happened if you had just let sleeping dogs lie.”
Yuu’s scream was muffled by Azul’s hand covering it, holding the prefect close. Another tentacle came to envelop them, squeezing around the shoulders and neck like the world’s most uncomfortable shawl. Yuu began to cry, both with muffled screams and tears, and wriggled desperately against Azul.
“Shhh, hush now, prefect. Don’t you want a front row seat to the show?”
Yuu’s vision became even more blurred. Any feeling from below the waist was beginning to fade, and their movements began to slow down.
Azul loosened his grip, causing Yuu to splutter for air. They were limp, helpless, weak. It served them right, didn’t it?
He suddenly felt a weight on his back, and teeth sinking into the crook of his neck. The sharp prick of claws cut into his back, and what should have been legs began to wrap around his middle.
Ah, he thought, so that’s who it is.
He turned to see one glowing yellow eye staring back at him. Blue blood was spilling from where Floyd had sunk his claws in, and around his mouth.
Had Azul been in his right mind, he may have let go then. But instead, he simply began to shake him off, elbowing at his ribs and sending a blast of magic toward him.
I could take his power. I could make it so none of these fools could stop me. Jade’s too.
He couldn’t convince himself to hurt the eel, not when he was screaming, “Snap out of it!” Although muffled by the flesh of his shoulder, it was clear he meant it.
Floyd could kill him. If he simply wanted to fight for the sake of a snack, he had eight perfectly good limbs available. But he picked the mos dangerous spot for himself - one jammed with his neck against branching coal and barnacles, completely within his vision, within gripping distance.
He felt another set of claws dig into him, this time on his tentacle that was gripping the prefect. He turned to look, finding Jade in the middle of attempting to free his prisoner.
Oh? So they’re loyal to them now, are they?
His grip on the human tightened, earring a croaking cry from the prefect. He felt their ribs snap under him, and a sick coil of pleasure swam up his spine. Or maybe that was overblot taking its toll.
Jade grit out something, though he wasn’t sure what. What he as feeling instead was Floyd wrapping further around him, tightening and tightening. Jade was doing something similar around the tentacle.
“Let them go, or I will cut this thing off.” Jade grit out, glaring at Azul. “You’ll kill them!”
“I don’t care.” Azul said plainly, glaring right back. He would soon care when he felt teeth sink into his tentacle, two sets. Jade’s Pharyngeal jaw gripped the tentacle, tearing at it.
Azul snatched Jade by the waist, attempting to pull him off, only to find that Floyd took his place.
No matter, I have eight legs.
But eels are slippery creatures, and it turned out containing three people was just a little bit too hard to pay attention to. He growled and flung the prefect away, watching as they hit the tile floor, limp. Breathing. Good. Time to focus on the eels.
They didn’t run to Yuu like he’d imagined. They continued to fight him, to wrap themselves around every single one of his tentacles and grip to him, pinning his arms down. He’d never seen them look so desperate, so…so…
So vulnerable.
Floyd had his head pressed into Azul’s chest, words muffled but the message was clear - stop. Please.
Jade was gripping to him even tighter, surprisingly, one arm wrapped around his neck and the other his back in what could be seen as a tight hug.
“Azul.” He said, voice firm, “It’s time to come back to your senses. Please.” His voice was soft at the end, emotion evident in his own Jade-like way.
Azul found it hard to breathe. Whether it was from the soft spoken pleads or from suffocation via eel tail, he wasn’t sure, but…
Tears clouded his vision, and he felt himself sinking. He went limp, collapsing to the floor in a heap. Tentacles dissolved into legs, coral into nothing but ink. His skin took on a softer pink, his gills fading into soft lines against his flesh, looking more like scars than anything.
Jade draped his blazer over Azul, finally relieved that his…business partner…had finally fallen. If he was gone, he….
It’s no matter.

Twisted Wonderland Whumptober
October 5th - hypothermia - Kalim
characters: kalim, azul, jade, floyd, yuu, grim
cw// spoilers for chapter 4, water, hypothermia, whump, one session therapy
The feeling of betrayal honestly hurt more than the rough landing directly into the near-frozen sand at the edge of Scarabia. Years upon years of trusting someone, only to find out that they hate you will always sting more than a serrated knife to the back.
The sand puffed up around them as the little group hit the ground, and while the merfolk seemed to recover quickly, the humans of the group took a little time.
“Sea Otter?” Kalim heard a voice gently say, with a prod to his side, “You alive?”
“‘M okay.” Kalim said quietly, finally shifting to sit up.
Floyd was hovering beside him, crouched down and leaning over to catch his eyes. He looked…genuinely worried, actually. His hald moon eyes were mournful, lips pointed into a light frown. Floyd wrapped one arm around Kalim’s back, helping him sit as he reoriented himself. “You hit the ground kinda hard. Does anything feel broken or wobbly?”
“How many fingers am I holding up?” Jade asked and- wait, when did he get over here? He was flanking Kalim’s other side, holding up three fingers. He, too, looked worried, though it was less plain to see than on his twin’s face.
“Three.” Kalim said, wiping his eyes with the heel of his palms. He found they were wet, and unfortunately extremely cold.
Jade nodded - not that Kalim could really see, he was not focused on the sand in his eyes - and Floyd began to tug Kalim to his feet, softly shushing his protestations.
“You’re alright, Sea Otter, we’ve got you.”
“Jamil hates me.” He whimpered, beginning to cry again, “He overblotted and its my fault, I should have…”
“It’s seriously cold out here, it’s like we’re under the ice floes.” Floyd commented, rubbing at his arms. He turned to look at Azul, who nodded slightly in agreement.
“Grim is a ball of fur, and we merfolk have some innate cold resistance, but…” Azul began. The scarabia housewarden began to shiver against the cold, his dorm uniform doing nothing to protect him. Short sleeves weren’t meant for freezing temperatures after all. He turned to find the Prefect in the same condition, and frowned. “I fear Yuu and Kalim will not last long in this cold.”
“We don’t have any brooms or carpets to fly out on. What does that leave us for options?” Jade asked, a slight bitter note to his voice. He took off his scarf, gently draping it around Kalim, who was softly weeping.
“It’s a slog, but walkin’s our only way back.” Floyd grumbled.
“We spent quite a while in flight before we landed. It could take hours - possibly days - to trudge back on foot.” Azul pointed out, watching their companions with a keen eye. He removed his glasses and gently cleaned some condensation from the temperature changes from them, frowning.
“Jamil…I trusted you…” Kalim whispered, his tears leaving bright red streaks down his cold cheeks.
“You cryin’, little Sea Otter? Your tears are gonna freeze over, y’know.” Floyd gently prodded, pulling Kalim closer for warmth, a little pat on his shoulders in an attempt at comfort.
“It’s all my fault. I drove Jamil to the brink without even realizing it.” He sniffled and wiped at his nose with the back of his hand. “The real Jamil would never do such things! He’s a good guy, he’s always helping me, giving me a shoulder to lean on, and-”
“Isn’t that attitude what drove him to the brink to begin with?” Yuu asked, interrupting him, an unimpressed look on their face.
“What?” Kalim asked, freezing to stare at them.
Grim let out a noise like he was being strangled, as he said, “Hoo boy, Yuu, you really go for the jugular sometimes.”
“I’m with little Shrimpy on this one.” Floyd admitted, “Sea Otter, you’re like…TOO nice. It’s kinda…grating.”
“Huh? Is it?” Kalim asked, looking genuinely surprised. He recoiled away from Floyd for a moment to catch his expression. He was mournfully serious, and it only served to make Kalim feel worse.
“Yes,” Jade spoke up, “If I were betrayed by someone the way you were…” He paused, looking down at Kalim, face set in a smile but eyes reading completely different, “I’d lash out with a torrent of unmitigated verbal abuse to break them down mentally, then bind them and drag them beneath the waves.” He smiled, a little bit more toothy, “Perhaps you should try something like that? As the way that you blame yourself and try to excuse his behavior is, quite frankly, a tad galling.”
“Galling? Really?” Kalim asked, voice wavering between upset and angered, “But, I mean, Jamil would never betray me. Ever.”
“Uh, newsflash, he did.” Floyd pointed out, tilting his head. “In fact, he was gonna make you out to be the bad guy and get you expelled. He’s an enormous Douchebag.”
“When it comes to underhanded ploys, Azul at his worst couldn't hold a candle to that.” Jade said, keen eyes watching Kalim. The poor boy hadnt stopped shaking, and it came to the point that Jade went to Azul and took his decorative coat, draping it around Kalim in an attempt to starve off the cold. Kalim was rapidly going from warm pink to pale-ish grey, which was not at all comforting.
“...know. It’s okay to hold your head high and denounce him for the traitor that he is.” Jade had said, though Kalim felt like it was underwater for a moment.
“You carry yourself like a goody-two-shoes, laughing off conflict with a flippant word or two. To twisted individuals like myself and Jamil- ah, I mean, to calculating individuals, those remarks are like barbs digging under our skin.” Azul adjusted his glasses, watching the panic rise on Kalim’s face as he continued, “I’d say you’ve been pushing Jamil since your formative years. Though, it’s not your fault in the least, of course. You were born into a very high social class. As showered as you were with affection from your family and everyone around you, you grew up with honesty and integrity. An upbringing like that would make anyone take certain things for granted.”
“That’s…not much of a compliment.” Yuu said.
“I would argue that in Kalim’s case, it might simply be a case of a naturally innocent disposition.” Jade added on, frowning slightly.
“Oh…” Kalim said softly, lips taking on a tint of periwinkle, “So Jamil is…bad?”
“Extremely.” Yuu said, shivering rather hard themself. They had bitten down on their cheek, forcing themself to muddle through it.
“In that case, I’d better get back fast!” Kalim said with newfound determination. He did his classic pose, fist clenched and all. He began to feel warm again, chalking it up to the coat and scarf around his neck, “I must punch him and yell ‘traitor!’ I owe him that much.”
“That, and we need to bring him to his senses fast. If we don’t, his life will be in danger.” Azul agreed. He covered his face with his hand, though it was clear there was a burning emotion eating at him. Guilt? Fear? Sadness? “We have to get back before his magic reserves run dry.”
“That puts us right back to where this conversation started.” Floyd grumbled, “How do we get back? Walkin’ really fast?” His sarcastic tone cut through the cold, letting a bit of levity hit Kalim, who giggled slightly.
“My nose is gonna freeze over if we stay out here much longer!” Grim yoweled, frowning.
“If there was a river, we could swim back.” Jade said,  “Sadly, all the rivers here are dried out.”
River…river…water…Water! Kalim turned his attention to Jade, “So…a lack of water is the problem?” “Yes,” Azul hummed, “Jade and Floyd can easily outpace brooms when they're in their true forms. But we can’t exactly restore a dry river…”
“Maybe you can’t, but I can.” Kalim grinned, teeth chattering against the cold.
“HUH?” Each of the mermafia asked at once, taken aback at this claim.
“Kalim, has the cold perhaps gone to your head?” Jade asked hesitantly. He reached out to touch him, finding that his skin was cold enough to be felt through his gloves, and frowned.
“My signature spell, Oasis Maker, can produce an enormous volume of water with just a smidgen of magical power. If I make you a river, you can get us back to the dorm, right?” He said confidently, brushing off Jade’s hand.
“Y-you mean to tell me THAT’S your signature spell? That’s insane!” Azul gaped.
“Aha ha! It’s pretty useless when we’ve already got running water.”
“Don’t ‘aha ha’ me! Some countries don’t HAVE that sort of infrastructure. Your power would make you nothing short of a hero to those people! That’s…thats…ABSURDLY marketable!”
Jade rolled his eyes and shoved Azul away gently. “I think we can leave Azul to his get-rich-quick fantasies for a bit. Kalim, if you would oblige us?”
“You just need a river, right?” He nodded to himself, gathering his strength, “Okay, I’m on it!”
He called down the rains, hands held out as the sparkling water fell down around them, quickly filling up the trenches of rivers long before, and long since dried. He smiled in wonder, ignoring the shaking in his knees and the overwhelming heat blooming under his skin. He wanted to take everything off, to cool down. It burned, it made him feel feverish.
“....and Sea Otter, you’re with me.”
Kalim looked over to see his allies transformed into their true forms, and nearly laughed. He had almost forgotten they were merfolk, nearly forgotten why he had called the rain. He came over quickly to Floyd, gripping onto his arm, the Ramshackle prefect by his side. Both climbed onto Floyd’s back, legs wrapping around his middle for stability. Kalim was up near his neck, clinging with his arms wrapped around him in a hug, while Yuu did the same to Kalim.
They began to move as the ice cold rain kept beating down, stinging against the skin like tiny glass shards.
The world was a blur as Kalim drifted between being underwater and just above the surface. His hands began to feel numb and his eyes drooped. He found his shivering had returned, but barely noticed it, instead focusing on the pain.
He felt his eyelids grow heavy and his grip began to slip, leaving him limp against the prefect as Floyd swam as fast as he could. He felt the weightlessness of being underwater and heard several screams before he felt arms around him again, pulling him up and to the surface. Everything beyond that was a mystery.
-----------
“Kalim? Kalim, are you alright? Please, speak to me.” He heard a voice calling him distantly, with warm hands tugging him up.
He looked up to find Jade staring at him and - oh, this seemed familiar. Hadn’t this happened before?
“He’s alive.” Jade breathed to a group beyond him. Kalim noted that he was no longer in eel form, but rather back to being dressed, yet his hair was damp. He turned to look and found they were back in Scarabia, in the dining hall, and he was laid out on the table. He groaned, and Jade hushed him, “Quiet. Jamil is looking for you, and you are in no shape to fight.”
“I-”
“We will protect you.” Azul promised, “Rest. Warm up. We’ve got this.”
“Yeah, Sea Otter. You’re in good hands. But we’ll be sure to save you your revenge punch, don’t worry.”

October 10th - Waterboarding - Jade
Characters: Jade, Floyd, Mr. Leech, NPC (Bastian)
Cw// drowning, waterboarding, whump, mafia ties, implied ch!ld abuse, jade leech typical behavior, Floyd leech typical behavior, betrayal, gaslighting(?), hypothermia
Rating: R (for dark subjects)
Tumblr media
Bastian coughs, chest heaving in pain. He’s blindfolded, and cold, and he can’t move.
He can feel the icy feeling or the coral sea around him. He knows the tail wrapped around him and the claws digging into his shoulders, begging him not to move.
“J-Jade?” He tries, “This isn’t funny-“
Under the water he goes again. He begins to try and kick at his friend, tries to swim to the surface. His lungs are burning, despite the cold, and he can feel his fingers and toes going numb.
He’s brought to the surface once again and he coughs out the water. Tears mix with the sea as they drop down desperately. He cries - he cries for his mother, for his siblings, for Jade to stop. It’s not funny anymore, it hurts, stop-
“Good work, Jade.” He hears a deep voice say. Off goes his blindfold, to be met with three blurry figures.
Jade, of course, is holding him. He can see him a little, watches his earfins twitch. Floyd, who’s hovering in front of him. He looks both nervous and gleeful, an odd combination to see on him. Then, behind Floyd, is Mr. Leech.
The merman he was never met to meet. The one Jade and Floyd warned him about, who they said they never wanted him to come across.
Bastian swallows nervously, his squirming beginning to slow.
Mr. Leech stares at him in disinterested contempt. “It seems you’ve become a bit of an issue with my boys, land dweller.” He says. He tilts his head to the side, then his face splits into a malicious grin, “I’m sure you’ll no longer be such a thing, will you?” He shares a glance with Jade, flicking a wrist to him. “Deal with this…setback, won’t you? After all…”
He leans forward, a massive hand landing on Floyd’s shoulder. He squeezes and digs in his nails, drawing the poisonous blood flowing in Floyd’s veins. It runs down, mixing with the salty waves as Floyd does his best not to cry out. He looks scared, and is staring behind Bastian to make a pleading face at Jade.
Bastian turns to look at Jade. The young merfolk’s face is carefully blank. His eyes are empty, his lips drawn in a firm line.
He turns, giving Bastian a smile. It’s disarming, somehow, and yet terrifying at once. “It seems our playtime is over with.” He says formally, “You were lovely entertainment.”
Bastian is under the waves again. He had enough time to catch a bit of air. Jade held him firm, looking truly apologetic once under the surface. He loosened his grip, retracting his tail until it was just his arms holding onto his human friend.
An eight year old never looked so old.
Bastian let out a bubble of air that had been burning in his chest, and allowed himself to go limp. His eyes slipped closed.
Jade shuddered, looking away to steady his own breath. Yes, Jade was in trouble, but…
But maybe…
He came back to the surface. He let Bastian float aimlessly and prayed his poor lungs would hold a little longer.
“It’s done.” He said simply, eyes flicking from his father to his twin.
Mr. Leech let Floyd go, shoving him away lightly. Floyd, in turn, dove under the surface. Good.
“You understand what you had to do, yes?” Jades father said firmly.
Jade nodded solemnly, “I do.” He forced his eyes to meet his fathers, “Attachment is exploitable.”
“And?” He prompted.
“And anything for the family.” Jade said. “I understand.”
Mr Leech nodded, “Good. I don’t want to hear another thing like this again, do you understand?”
Jade gulped and nodded, eyes studying the water’s surface. It seemed calmer now, than it had with Bastian. Perhaps it was the ocean allowing him a moment of grief. “I understand.”
Without another word, Mr. Leech dove back underwater. His dorsal fin arched out of the water, until his tail flicked up. It seamlessly slipped back under without even a the smallest splash.
Jade waited three seconds, then dove down to check on Bastian, swimming as quickly as possible. He looked frantically, only to find Floyd had just breached the surface with him.
He darted to them, and nearly ran into them in his frenzy. He popped up next to him, checking to see if Bastian was breathing.
The humans lips were blue, his skin was pale. He looked dead, surely, but there was still a pulse, albeit slow.
The twins swam him to shore, laying him on the pebbly sand. Jade pressed down on his chest, trying to save him desperately.
One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight-
Water poured from Bastian’s mouth, wetting the sand beside him. He began to cough, and shift. He shivered desperately against the cold.
Jade felt a pang of guilt once again. He had done this, hadn’t he? He couldn’t just leave well enough alone.
Bastian began to blink, and there was a yell from the cliff above.
Floyd tugged on Jade’s arm fin, “Jade, it’s time to go, please!”
Jade stared blankly at Bastian one last time.
“I’m so sorry.” He said softly, before turning back to the sea with his brother.
His father was right. This as his fault, and it wouldn’t happen again. Anything for family.
They swam deeper and deeper, to where the light doesn’t flow easily. Jade stopped, halting Floyd as well.
“Eh?” His twin asked, “What’s-“
Jade pulled him in to a hug, latching tight and coiling around him, “We’ve got each other, right?”
Floyd nodded against his shoulder, squeezing him tight. “Yeah, Jade. We’ve got each other.”

October 2nd - Caged - Grim
Characters: Grim, [redacted]
Cw// animal abuse (not graphic), blood, threats of e*thanasia, angst, whump, crying, Grim’s tragic backstory
Rating: R for upsetting content
Tumblr media
The sound of yowling echoed down the alleyway near midnight, a rattling sad sound. It was dark, and cold, and a tiny blaze of blue illuminated the grimy brick nearby.
Hissing pops caused the howling to grow. A tiny monster sat, trapped inside of a cage. It was raining, causing the blue flames flicking away from the tips of his ears to sizzle against the moisture and slowly begin to die down. Grey fur was matted, both from grit and blood and from the rain weighing it down.
He ducked his head underneath his paws, hissing at the pain he felt in his shoulder blades. The scab as beginning to reopen, he could feel the warmth of his blood trickling down again, mixing with the rainwater. Mud was pooled at his feet.
The rain only began to pour more and more, and he had to put everything into his cries. He spoke no words - he was far too young for that, he wasn’t even sure where he was or what he was trapped in or why - but that didn’t stop the pleading tone from coming through.
He heard dogs begin to bark nearby. He stopped whining.
He shook, slinking back in his cage as clicking footsteps approached, adding to the sizzles and the beat of the rain against the cobblestone of the alley.
“Damned cat.” A gruff voice grumbled, kicking the little creature’s cage, “So you’re the one stealing from our garbage?”
It wasn’t much of a question, it was rather clear. Discarded salmon skin and tuna cans were near to the cage, and papers - pamphlets - adorned the inside, the ink mixing with the sludge sitting in the bottom of it.
The creature whimpered and shrunk even further away.
The man clicked his tongue and bent down, lifting it up and shaking it roughly. Mud flung out of the sides, landing with a splat on the ground, “You’re lucky I don’t just take you to get put down.” He said, glaring at the monster, “But it’s my son’s birthday, and I’m feeling benevolent.”
He dropped the cage to the ground with a thump, then leaned over and unlocked the door, “You’d best stay far from here, do you understand? If I catch you digging through the bin again, you’ll meet a grim fate.”
The creature looked up and whimpered, grabbing the pamphlet from beneath him between his teeth before scampering off.
The man watched as the drenched cat-like creature ran off. He sighed and kicked the cage again before returning inside.
The monster found himself somewhere warm for the night, beside an Italian restaurant’s exhaust vent. The overhanging helped keep him dry, and his fiery ears crackled as the water evaporated.
He laid down, curled in a tight ball around his treasure. He contemplated the words of the man - the grim fate he would meet if he returned. He’d show him, he would never live in fear again. Never have to eat another’s table scraps or get kicked around or trapped.
He settled down on the brochure for Night Raven College, head resting on his sore paws. Yes, a Grim fate indeed.
For I am the great Grim, and I will surpass them all.

October 3rd - Gun To Temple - Rook Hunt
Characters: Rook Hunt, Jade Leech (My account is sponsored by Octavinelle)
Cw: blood, injury, violence, anxiety, open-ending, whump, stalking, rook hunt typical behavior, jade leech typical behavior
Rating: R for violence and medium-high gore
Tumblr media
Footsteps lighter than feathers falling into snow ghosted down the halls. The swish of a cape and the steady breathing of the hunter is all that could be heard, but whether he could hear that over the sound of his own racing heart. He forced his breathing to even and calm, hushing himself internally as he would a scared child.
It was dark, scarily so. Or was he simply blindfolded? Being able to see more than a few feet in front of him should have been near impossible, but the darkness was something he was used to it after so many years spent at the bottom of the sea.
He felt his face in his moment of rest, finding it was indeed simply dark. He felt at the fresh wound crossing his eye, down from his hairline to his jaw, even further to his Adam’s apple. It would surely scar, he thought.
He heard the hunter grow closer, and quickly pushed himself away from the wall he had been slumped again, turning to run further down the hall. Staying still would do no good, it would leave him a sitting shrimp.
“Your eating habits, idiosyncrasies, sleep schedule, heart rate, I have recorded all of these glimmers and more.” He had said with a glint in his eye. “Now if I should ever find a sea creature in my crosshairs, I should be able to dispatch it with ease.”
Evidently, he was now caught in those same crosshairs he was once warned of.
He ran down the hall, trying to be as quiet as possible, but the burns cradling his feet made it hard, and ribbons of gouges adorning the back of his legs didn’t help matters either.
“Monsieur Prémédite,” the voice singsonged down the hall, “It would be best not to run any longer. I grow weary of this game of hide and seek. Will you not rest and let me retrieve you?”
Jade’s breath was sharp, though he refused to cry out or whimper, despite the pain he was in. He continued his sprint, and was nearly to the entrance of Octavinelle when he felt blooming pain in his ankle, and collapsed to the ground.
He looked back to find his Achilles tendon. Blood sprayed against the stone, wetting it and making it shine like polish. He grunted, biting the inside of his cheek. He won’t scream, he won’t cry. He can’t.
He could see Rook approaching, so he choked down his pain and attempted to stand.
He managed to get to his knees before he felt a sharp heel kicking him down, forcing him to lay flat on his stomach.
“Now, it seems you’ve caused enough issues for the night, non? And you surely know you will not be able to return to your dorm, do you not?”
Jade grit his teeth and tried to push himself up, only to be met with the cocking of a shotgun. He felt the cool metal of the tip of the barrel against his head, just above his ear.
He closed his eyes. His breathing became ragged as he choked down tears that stung in his eyes. He worried for how Floyd would fare without him. Would his twin be okay? They’d never been separated before. He tried to console himself with the thought that even if he wasn’t there, Azul would take care of Floyd.
He looked up, glaring harshly at Rook. Blood pooled at the corner of his lip from how hard he was biting his cheek.
Rook stared down, normally passionate eyes disinterested and cold. He pulled the gun back for one moment, then swung it around.
Jade barely had time to register what as happening before the butt of the shotgun hit his temple and everything went black.

October 13th - Dislocation - Ruggie
Characters: Ruggie, Malleus, Lilia
Cw// dislocation, mild body horror, attempted murder, magic, whump, very short
Tumblr media
How far must you be willing to go to save the lives of others?
Its something echoing in Ruggie’s head as he seizes control of Malleus’s body, forcing the powerful fae to stop in his tracks.
Ruggie takes in a deep breath, gulping a glance toward Leona, helpless, comatose is all the encouragement he needs.
He grits his teeth, then proceeds to bend his fingers completely back. It takes a level of fortitude nobody’s ever seen of him to not only keep control over the dragon fae, but dislocate his own body in order to hurt Malleus.
His fingers are screaming in pain when he leans down to dislocate his own knee, and he laughs to cover the pain.
His control over Malleus is waning, and he can see from the look in the fae’s eyes that as soon as his grip on him is gone, he’s toast.
He glances behind him for a second to watch as his friends spring into action, running over to take malleus down as Ruggie delivers another blow. He throws himself onto his side, and with a sickening crack, his shoulder is out of place.
He finally lets out a yelp, followed by hysterical laughter. He can feel himself being pulled away, can make out the vague shape of Lilia carrying him, looking concerned and terrified.
He can see the beginnings of green flames chasing them as Lilia runs. Time is running out.
He lets go, allowing himself to slip aimlessly between waking and dreaming. At least it’s not Leona he’s after anymore. At least he bought some time.
But why did he have to sacrifice everything to do it?
