TV Recommendation: Mysterious Lotus Casebook
Tumblr media
*This program contains no actual mysterious lotus casebook
Depending on who you ask, Li Lianhua is either a famous wandering doctor capable of bringing back the dead, or kind of an asshole. He wants nothing to do with the world around him, forms no attachments beyond his dog, and quietly searches the land for the remains of an old friend long dead.
Fang Duobing is a passionate and friendly young lord who dreams of being a detective for the powerful Baichuan Academy, a sect dedicated to bringing justice to the martial world and protecting the people.
Fang Duobing has one claim to fame that no one can quite believe: As a child, he was (jokingly) taken in as the disciple of the legendary and tragic hero Li Xiangyi. Ten years ago, Li Xiangyi reshaped the martial world before he was betrayed by the evil and hateful Di Feisheng.
One horrible day, Li Xiangyi and Di Feisheng killed each other in battle on the stormy seas, and 58 of the most powerful heroes of Li Xiangyi's sect were cut down.
Even though he was only vaguely acquainted with Li Xiangyi (for like a few days), Fang Duobing lives his life determined to be a legacy his (not actual) master could be proud to leave behind.
Fang Duobing crosses paths with Li Lianhua, and drags the tired doctor into his shenanigans time and again. They are soon joined by the vaguely threatening A'Fei, a grumpy-ass warrior Li Lianhua calls a friend, but who seems a bit too kill-happy for the tricky but kind doctor.
Whispers on the winds of the martial world say that the evil Di Feisheng has reappeared in the world after ten long years. If he truly did survive his fight to the death with Li Xiangyi, is it possible the old hero survived as well?
Will Fang Duobing, detective that he is, ever realize that 1+1=2 and his companion A'Fei is none other than Di Feisheng? Or that the cranky doctor Li Lianhua is really the mighty Li Xiangyi himself?
Ten years ago, a tragic misunderstanding led Di Feisheng and Li Xiangyi to attack one another in a fight to the death, costing the two most powerful sects in the martial world their leaders. Li Xiangyi was fatally poisoned, and now in the last months of his life he will do whatever it takes to find the long-lost corpse of his best friend, solve the mystery that led to his battle with Di Feisheng...
... and hopefully find a tree to tie Fang Duobing to, so he can finally get some damn peace and quiet!

TV RECOMMENDATION: Severance (2022) Britt Lower as Helly Riggs
If you want an ambitious and original sci-fi done right—or miss the days when Black Mirror was good—this one's for you. My favorite show from 2022. I won't say anything more since it's best watched blind, but I will add that it also stars Adam Scott, John Turturro, Christopher Walken, and Patricia Arquette... so you're in good hands.

Why you should watch the cdrama Love and Redemption, part 2
Tumblr media
2. Fun cultivation system!
Ok, this isn’t particular of LnD , rather a common background for Xianxia(Chinese costume fantasy) but I just find it to be more than a little bit interesting. Let me explain:
Simply speaking, in ancient Chinese fantasy world everything can have a spirit. And anything that has a spirit can cultivate, which refers to increasing your spirituality and transcendence by some means, resulting in greater power, abilities and even achieving immortality. (I get this feeling in Chinese mythology there is generally no hard distinction between an immortal and a god. A god usually is an immortal that have taken on some deity duty, approved by some other god or The Way.)
This is such a fun systems of the cultivators because you could be a unconscious rock and one day some passer-by immortal carelessly dropped a spiritual artifact on you, and suddenly, you started to accumulate spiritual energy which slowly formed into a consciousness and, from there, you can continued on your way to ascend. Or, you could be an animal behind someone’s courtyard who got hold of a practice to cultivate(foxes, snakes and ferrets seem especially good at that) and gained more and more spiritual power that you reached higher intelligence and transcendence level, gaining a human form and eventually even godhood. So here, you have the crazy upward mobility pathways from a rock to a god. How fun is that!
But it’s not all fun. There are going to be tests. The easiest way to explain this is to say, the ascend has invisible stages, like periods of climbs and plateaus. There is supposedly a trial, roughly translated as ‘thunder-test,’ that those who ascend in power must endure periodically when they are about to reach the next stage, in which they must either pass, or perish. Who knows, gaining power has its inherent perils!
The old stories in the bygone times often demonstrate that a good cultivator will have a much easier time from the trials than an evil cultivator, and the scale of the trial is only going to increase as stages increase. In the show LnD, one of the side characters, Purple Fox, is said to have passed thirty-six trials, which indicates that she is very likely not evil, as the increasing intensity of the trials would most likely have wiped her out otherwise, after so many rounds.
(It is interesting to note, a fox spirit was said to gain an extra tail each time it passed a thunder-trial, and once they gained nine tails, they become extremely powerful and basically a god-level being. This is not explored here in the show but it’s a well known thing in this genre.)
The thunder trial, however, is not so much a punishment for the wicked, since it didn’t really follow any particular conduct, good or bad, as it is simply a natural consequence of power stage increasing. It is occasionally depicted as carried out by a dutiful minor god, but most of the times, it is just depicted as something that naturally happens without interference. I find such kind of setting more metaphorically interesting, not just because it in a moral sense tests the power for its worthiness. It also alludes to the undercurrent of real world, often unseen but very real, that leads to an evil order’s instability and eventual self-destruct. It kinda confirms to the belief that the Way of the Universe on a grander scale, select kindness and reject evil, and in this sense the universe isn’t indifferent. Nor is it blind.
You might wonder what the heck this post is talking about. Isn’t this all just some background setting for fantasy? But this thunder-trail system really is metaphorically interesting if put on a grander scale. Consider the discovery of nuclear reactions, definitely a new power stage for humanity. But what did people do with it? They made nuclear weapons first way before any effective NPP.
No surprise here. It is always easier to release energy destructively than to harness it constructively. Not malicious tho, I want to stress. It is a fundamental law of physics. Nuclear is just one most obvious example. At our current stage of development, humanity could already cause great destructions to itself and the world by multiple means, including climate change, biologicals, wars, general systematic failing of society leading to hybrid disasters, etc, just off the top of my head. With power stages increasing, the chance for a civilization to destroy itself only increases, as each mistake becomes more expensive. It’s like building skyscrapers on an earthquake-prone ground, whatever is unstable will be shaken loose, inevitably. (So what is true stability? Is it oppression? Is it total control? Is rigidity stable?)
Returning to topic here, the Xianxia cultivation is really interesting to me in many ways, and I’d recommend you all read stories or watch shows/movies related to this type of Chinese fantasy. So why not watch Love and Redemption, which is imho the BEST as it’s both a continuation of traditions, introducing new concepts and not blindly-confirming to either. (LnD didn’t really talk about thunder-trial in particular but it touches on something underlying, the importance of acknowledging both the work of the Yin and the Yang.) Besides, it is full of exciting plots, martial art magic, and has a kinky-soft gender-role subversive main couple that is my absolute favorite (and so many queerness it’s insane!)
Go watch Love and Redemption. You won’t regret it!
This post is Part 2 of my LnD recommendation series. Part 1 here.

TV Recommendation: Love When the Stars Fall // The Starry Love
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tens of thousands of years ago, the gods sealed off Hell itself. The seal was not permanent, and over the millennia it has been the fate of the god known as the Empyrian to sacrifice himself and use his life to renew the seal.
When the Queen of the human world gave birth to twin girls, the realms of Heaven and the Void both celebrated. The twins were said to be the reincarnation of an ancient force- with one twin blessed in peace and love, and the other cursed with darkness and cruelty.
Qing Kui is the beloved Princess, destined to marry the latest Empyrian of Heaven, Crown Prince Xuan Shang. She has embraced her destiny, even though it is known eventually Xuan Shang will sacrifice himself to renew the seal on Hell.
Ye Tan, however, is destined for the Void. She is shunned by all- suffering physical abuse not only from her father the King, but even from servants. Forbidden to learn, forbidden to speak to anyone, forbidden from knowing any warmth or kindness- the only ones who make Ye Tan's life bearable are Bird Demon Man Man, eternally friendzoned Prince of Beasts Di Lan Jue, and Ye Tan's beloved twin sister herself, Qing Kui.
Ye Tan is fiercely loyal to her sister, and as hard as her own life is, she is hellbent to change Qing Kui's fate. If Qing Kui marries the Empyrian Xuan Shang, he will sacrifice himself- sooner than later- and she will be left a widow in heaven for the rest of her immortal life.
Between Ye Tan's meddling and a dark plot from Void Prince Chao Feng, Ye Tan's wish comes true in the most surprising way of all.
Qing Kui indeed is spared marriage to the doomed Xuan Shang... Because Ye Tan is sent to heaven in her place.
With the Princess of the Void posing as a blessed immortal in Heaven- and the Princess of Heaven undercover in the Void, their fates are irrevocably switched.
But the more Ye Tan gets to know Xuan Shang, the more determined she becomes to find a way to save his life... Mainly because he put a curse on her to teach her manners and like Hell she's going to let that slide!
Qing Kui, gentle and kind as she is, quickly finds herself falling in love with Void Prince Chao Feng... But is love enough to turn him from his dark path?
And what will Qing Kui do when she finds out that the one who swapped their wedding sedans and sent her and her sister in the wrong direction in the first place was none other than Chao Feng himself?

ONE DAY
↳book > screen
“If you muck me about, Dexter.” “I won’t-“ “I mean it, if you lead me on or let me down or go behind my back, I will murder you. I swear to God, I will eat your heart.”
“I won’t do that, Em.” “You won’t?” “I swear, I won’t.”
And then she frowned, and shook her head, then put her arms around him once more, pressing her face into his shoulder, making a noise that sounded almost like rage. “What’s up?” he asked. “Nothing. Oh, nothing. Just…” She looked up at him. “I thought I’d finally got rid of you.” “I don’t think you can,” he said.

Woojin being fond and exasperated but unfazed by and even proud of Gunwoo’s “heart of a boxer.”
Tumblr media
These two really. Their relationship is truly something to die for. Woojin unconditionally supporting Gunwoo’s decision. That soft, knowing smile, knowing that Gunwoo did not and would not betray his ideals. Knowing they deserve to have that money after everything they went through but still being fond and unsurprised as Gunwoo turned it down.
Recall, this is the same guy who risked his life for money inside a safe because there were “billions on the line.”
Tumblr media
These two I swear.
Everyone go watch Bloodhounds! You won’t be disappointed.

Halloween Recommendation: Stephen King's Rose Red
** This one can be tricky to find. It was originally released as a 3 night mini-series in 2002, but then re-released as a motion picture. Apparently Hulu has it?
Tumblr media
In 1906, oil barron John Rimbauer built a veritable palace overlooking Seattle. It was his young bride, Ellen, who would give the house it's name: Rose Red.
First blood was drawn before the foundation was even laid. A foreman, murdered over a simple argument. Bizarre deaths and mysterious disappearances plagued Rose Red, swallowing up the Rimbauer family, their servants, friends, and anyone who dared enter.
Eventually, the grand estate fell into disrepair. Paranormal investigators descended upon the property, but none were ever able to solve the mystery, nor stop the deaths.
Now, more than 90 years after the first deaths at Rose Red, Steven Rimbauer, the last living descendant of John and Ellen Rimbauer, has been offered massive sums of money to sell Rose Red. It will be totally leveled, the land used for condos.
Before the house is destroyed, Steven agrees to let Dr. Joyce Reardon and a cobbled-together team of psychics, mediums, and other paranormal investigators do one final sweep of the house.
What evil lurks within Rose Red?
What horrors did John and Ellen Rimbauer summon in their palatial estate- or were they victims themselves?
Why does Rose Red kill the men, but swallow the souls of the women and force them to haunt it's halls?
How many of Dr. Joyce Reardon's team can escape with their lives?
*** Stephen King wrote the screenplay for this story, but there is no novel. Instead, as part of the publicity and hype leading up to the miniseries premiere, "The Diary of Ellen Rimbauer" was published, serving as a prequel. You can buy the novel on Kindle.

Why you should watch the cdrama Love and Redemption
Tumblr media
 1. Because it’s a fun hi-fantasy costume TV drama featuring fun mystical creatures: Yaoguai
Those are traditional Chinese supernatural beings! Like fays, silkies, chimeras or even werewolves etc, these are the Chinese versions mythical creatures. Although often translated as “demons”, Yaoguai in Chinese culture are mostly natural beings that are simply more powerful than mortal humans. They often have some magical or transcendent qualities. Not gonna lie, Yaoguai is one of my most favorite part of the ancient Chinese culture due to how fun they are, as you can imagine. It is also where folk tales mixed with the elite literati class culture, which is interesting enough in itself.
Due to the fact that Yaoguai are powerful natural beings not supposedly confined by dominant social conventions, you can imagine the range of topics that is possible with them as a theme: man and nature, fear, marginalized groups, racism, ethnic-centralism etc. The show L&D is quite thought-provoking, but let’s just focus on the fun for now.
A little bit of history: The Yaoguai culture is almost as old as written Chinese culture: one of the earliest surviving Chinese book The Legend of Montains and Seas from 4000~2000BC depicted numerous Yaoguai in their natural habitats: strange creature and plants with magical abilities. They range from gods to monsters to supposedly regular dwellers of the wild. Japanese Yokai, which are fascinating in their own right, also take many influences mostly from this era of Yaoguai.
In later times, a new kind of Yaoguai stories emerged. Probably due to ancient Chinese observing phase changes, cycle of nature and other energy flows and theorizing about Qi(‘air’/energy) and transformation, Yaoguai started to gain human forms from animals/plants/even objects too, mostly by practicing Taoism cultivation in-line with the Way or bestowment of spiritual power by luck or intention. The Way is a Taoist notion that can simply be explained as ‘how the universe works’ which cannot be fully articulated. You can gain a vague sense of how ancient Chinese view it by looking at the Yin-Yang pattern: I’d say it’s rather holistic and involves interacting contradictory forces in a deeper harmonious level. Anyway, the show’s Yaoguai are mostly inline with this later kind of Yaoguai, because although many Yaoguai from the Lengend of Mountains and Seas took stage, they still cultivated and gained human forms to interact with humans.
Tumblr media
If you are interested in Yaoguai, Love and Redemption is a perfect intro. It has Yaoguai as a major theme of the show. Not just mentioning them or using them on screen, Yaoguai is actually part of the main plot. Also the show is very in style with the old-school Yaoguai stories of the past (conflicts and love with human etc), adding some modern thoughts and twists(gender role subversion, for example), which makes it a worthy continuation of the traditional Yaoguai genre.
Listen to the show’s opening theme song  琉璃“…bloodlines do not divide good and evil…choose with kindness, not heaven’s will…” here on YouTube (you can turn on English captions):
Opening Song Fanvid featuring male protagonist Yu Sifeng
