Not "this website is perfect and everyone on staff is a saint" nor "this website is uniquely evil and everyone on staff is in on a conspiracy to hurt its largely marginalized userbase while bragging about our existence" but "this website is the best we have at its scale but still massively flawed, and some people on staff are cool, some are probably giant assholes, and that's just what you SHOULD expect with a staff of ~200 - i.e., too few to run a platform this size efficiently but too many to weed out all the human dumpster fires efficiently in a professional space - and upper management is, well, Upper Fucking Management"
I just wish more people could recognize this

Tumblr media
Let's walk through this, anon.
[That user] is actively posting about and admitting to something bad.
Therefore, anybody who follows [that user] is already aware of the information that you've brought to me.
Therefore, anybody who follows [that user] already has the information that they need in order to make a decision about how to proceed. Whether they want to block [that user], continue following them, or target them for harassment.
You're not bringing any new information to anyone who already knows who [that user] is.
Therefore, this information is only potentially useful to people who don't already know who [that user] is.
What do you want people who have never heard of [that user] to do with this information?
What is gained by bringing the existence of [that user] to the attention of people who have never heard of them before?
Do you want people who have never heard of [that user] to go and block them despite having never interacted with them before?
Do you consider mob justice a fitting form of punishment and you would like to send my followers after [that user] to shame them for the thoughts and behaviors you describe?
Or do you just want to spread gossip about people you think are bad?
What is the point of spreading this information? What action do you want people who you make aware of this information to take?
Why is it important to you to increase the profile and reach of this person by spreading awareness of their existence?
Why is it important to you to make people who are not aware of this person's existence aware of it?
Literally, anon, I am asking you to think about this, and send me an answer. You say you know callout posts are bad, so what's the point?
What is your goal in spreading this information?

yeah…. it’s either that or they pick apart my interests and fandom :/ like?? why follow if you’re gonna hate on the stuff i post about? it’s just very uncomfortable honestly. but for now… ik raising awareness is more important so im sucking it up. but thanks for the disclaimer. i just really don’t want people to follow me for smth and get mad when it’s not what they were expecting ://
I'm so sorry, people are just awful. I got your ask while finding out that Bisan and Motaz are getting a whole bunch of hate because they interviewed people who don't want to fight anymore and just want peace with the Israelis and criticized Hamas for provoking them. Apparently they're shills and normalizers. Jesus fucking Christ. Honestly, I've come to believe that doing any sort of advocacy and social service no matter how informal is rewarding but also opens you up to the lowest, most entitled bottom-feeders in the universe.
You're doing great work. Stay strong!

It's important to be able to distinguish between:
"ugggh some mentally well person is giving me bullshit suggestions for how to 'just not be depressed'"
and
"Someone who has struggled with mental illness and has learned to manage it is offering advice based on what worked for them."
I see a lot of people on tumblr rejecting advice out of hand with the assumption that it's coming from the former and disparaging 'the neurotypicals' for daring to offer hope -- and while I get it, it's annoying as fuck to be told for the 500th time to "jUsT tRy yOgA!!1!1!" -- refusing to put any tools in your toolbox because you're committed to being defeated and have made your depression part of your identity is an extremely harmful mindset.
(And yes, I am saying this as someone who was suicidally, on-antipsychotics-levels-of-depressed twelve years ago.)
Is signing up for yoga or going for a walk every day gonna magically cure your depression? Of course not. But! Daily exercise can help. Getting fresh air can help. Structure and benchmarks and commitments that get your out of your house and your misery-cocoon and connect you with your support network can help. And when you're fighting an uphill battle, you need every little advantage you can get -- every bit of leverage and help to pull yourself out of the hole your brain has dug for you. Go to therapy and take your meds and go for a walk.
Don't throw away tools out of spite.

Did everyone suddenly forget the most basic Tumblr etiquette? Don't. Maintag. Your. Hate.
For example! Out of morbid curiosity I was scrolling through the Rings of Power tag. I haven't watched the show. I have no current desire to watch the show. But I saw a half dozen people in the tag calling the show trash and everyone who watches it trash as well. People who are loudly proclaiming that they haven't ever watched the show but they still hope it gets canceled on principle. People heckling others for enjoying it. And seeing their tags be every possible variation of the main show tag in addition to some ship and character tags. That's nothing more than a pathetic cry for attention and a desperate attempt to signal that you are better than other people for not liking the thing. It doesn't accomplish that, though. It just shows everyone that you haven't grown past the need to announce to the world whenever you need to take a crap.
If you really feel like it is "constructive criticism" or you're legitimately making a review that happens to be negative, then tag it as such so that people who legit like the thing don't have to see it untagged scrolling through the main tags. This is why we have a tag filtering system. If somebody is interested in what you have to say, they'll click to read.
Tumblr's search system is already a freaking mess, we don't need people explicitly making their hate everybody else's problem. Grow up.

is anybody else having major issues with Tumblr and more specifically the Tagging System. I'm having multiple posts not showing up under the tags I posted them to, that are getting 0 traction, and any notes they do get I'm not getting notifications for (even ones where people added their own posts/tags to).
Tumblr, please give me my dopamine hits, reward me for the effort I put into my posts, for the love of God.

You know how they say Tumblr is full of weirdos with mental illnesses and then laugh about it like it's just a silly joke. Well, don't try to read anything regarding politics or any kind of crisis. The real stuff outside of the 1st world problems. It's actually so bizzare how you can just spew bullshit about a complicated issue (let's say a war conflict or a poverty crisis in South America) and peeps here clap like happy seals. Makes you realize that fandom discourse, migratory slash fandom or 1001 kinks are perfect topics for Tumblr.

Thing is, I don't think tumblr staff is uniquely transphobic - especially since it's not just trans women's selfies and transmasc art getting censored, but classic queer comics, Black bloggers (especially women), and more, even as our more visible staff members keep talking about trying to fix the problem.
I suspect it's something much bigger and with much worse implications for the entire internet.
I suspect more appeals are being left to the automated system than we think (which they're NOT supposed to do but due to the sheer volume theyre having to deal with, well...) and, between the evergreen problem of report-brigading by bigots, the other evergreen problem of a company internally sucking at determining where justified criticism of their practices ends and harassment begins, and the problems of fighting the porn bots (because every single one you see is a product of survivorship bias) leading the algorithm to become sexist (remember #girlgate?), the automod algorithm is basically collapsing in on itself and learning all the worst biases of society MORE than ever before.
Which, given that these systems are being deployed all OVER the internet and being touted as objective and unbiased because ~computers can't be bigots~, should fucking horrify you.

Wow, anon! That's terrible! Like genuinely terrible, awful--- if it's true.
So... What do you want me to do about it?
I don't know who this user is.
I don't care to know who this user is.
I don't have any proof that what you're saying is true.
Even if it was true there's nothing that I can personally do about it.
Spreading rumors about people is bad.
Even when people are genuinely bad people, it's still bad to harass them.
literally what do you want me to do about this person I've never heard of?
You're sending this to me like it's some kind of "gotcha".
Like, aha, if I convince fujoshi that this stranger he doesn't know is bad ENOUGH, then fuojoshi will agree that it's right and good to spread rumors about and harass strangers.
No anon, I don't think we should spread rumors about and harass bad people either.

Tried to have a rational and good faith conversation with someone I thought might be rescued from Tankie-hood. And then they came out with "okay but what is the proof that China is an imperialist?"
Blue screened.
What is an Asian that lives in Asia supposed to even say to that?? Half my country's economy is controlled by China??? Half of Southeast Asia is five inches away from being outright colonized by them?? China itself is just a vast colonial project masquerading as a country?? Taiwan?? Hong Kong??
"Yes, but they're both only secessionist outposts. And Taiwan wants to control China."
What.

does anyone else feel like its harder to edit celebs and sometimes even shows/movies?
in 2011/2012 tumblr we were all just to excited about blogging about our fave celebs and the shows that they were in like you could not escape the jennifer lawrence gifs but as the years progressed, especially by 2016 we started seeing the term "problematic" and even blogs dedicated to showcasing problematic behavior of celebs. and that eventually turned into cancel culture.
wih that being said, i was super young in 2011 but now that im older i find it 1000x harder to excuse "problematic" behavior and when i say problematic, i mean actual problematic behavior that has serious consequences like noah schnapp promoting zionism or j.k. rowling with all her nonsense.
im so much more hesitant into putting effort into celeb edits like photoshoot edits or gifsets because so many celebs are just...horrible people??? and that makes me not want to edit the media they're in (example: stranger things bc of noah, brett gelman, the writers)
and although i miss when we were just creating stunning picspams, graphics, gifsets and all i'm also glad we're being more selective with who we blog about on tumblr because lets be real, a single gifset could influence me to watch a show more than any tiktok promo could.

The funny thing about being on tumblr a long time and having an extensive post history is sometimes you get an ask from some anon rando screaming at you for being an idiot and wrong about something and it's like, buddy, friend, babydoll, I have been being an idiot on this website for over a decade, you're gonna have to be a little more specific.

i have found a reason to hate tumblr
i was gonna reblog and show how you can find your tags by simply typing the tags into your address bar
but tumblr defaults to tumblr.com/[username] (which is disgusting and tries too hard to be like other social media sites, which is also disgusting) when you make a new account
and you have to specifically toggle the "Enable custom theme" switch to enable [username].tumblr.com like in the good old days
like. why would you do that.
