These amazing Dahlia cultivars were adding drama to a small front garden in Kirkwall, Orkney. There was a pink pompom Dahlia and a vibrant cactus type with the typical double blooms, with very narrow petals from the tip to the base.

The spectacular flower spikes of this Eremurus cultivar (foxtail lily) grow from a tuber that needs to be planted in fertile but well-drained soil with the crown not far below soil level.

In a small community garden at Dunkeld, Scotland, the colourful Corydalis solida subsp. solida 'Beth Evans' was producing a display of sugar-pink flowers. This tuberous perennial produces fern-like foliage that will die back by the end of spring.

In several gardens and nursery displays there were examples of Roscoea purpurea. This plant is an upright, deciduous tuberous perennial from the Himalayas, particularly Nepal. The clump of leafy stems produce these orchid-like flowers later in the season, ideal for this autumnal Royal Horticultural Society Chelsea Flower Show, London.

Eremurus stenophyllus (narrow-leaved foxtail lily) flowers arise from the fleshy, starfish-like roots of this herbaceous perennial along with a clump of strap-shaped leaves. These plants require fertile, sandy, well-drained soil conditions with protection from the wind. Here the flowers are sheltered between the glasshouse ranges of Cambridge Botanic Garden, UK.

Still flowering late in the season at Darsham Nurseries, Suffolk, dahlias we’re putting on a show in the garden and are being used to decorate the restaurant. On our table we had the lovely Dahlia 'Labyrinth' which is in the Decorative Group with broad flat petals, normally bluntly pointed, with no central disc showing.

It is not all autumn foliage colour at the moment as late flowering herbaceous perennials are still putting on a display including Dahlia 'Autumn Lustre'. This tuberous rooted perennial is a waterlily type with the inner florets being bright red and the outer ones being lighter orange-red. This plant will need to be lifted and stored in a cool, dry, frost-free place for winter. Here it was the star of the hot coloured cottage garden, Sissinghurst, Kent, UK.
