Hearing @taylorswift say she struggles with not feeling like a person has made it to where I need Taylor Swift to realize that she’s so much more than her music to us. Sure, her songs comfort us, move us, motivate us, sadden us. Sure, her voice is the one that sings us to sleep when we’re happy, or sad, or positively livid- but we love her beyond that. She’s more than lyrics and melodies, she’s more than her name. We love her because of HER. Her absolute devotion to her family, her diehard loyalty and support, her obsession with her cats. We love her for her addiction to scrabble and quilts, we love her for the way she bakes treats, and fangirls over fall. We love her for her smile, and the way her eyes shine. We love her for the way she speaks out about things she finds important, the way she’s there for us without fail. We love her for the way she will stand her ground when needed and also admit her mistakes. We love her for the way she laughs, the way she loves whale puns and cheesy jokes. We love her for HER, not just her music. Not just her brand. And I hope she knows that.

Speaking as someone whose favorite album is folklore, it has always genuinely surprised me (and irritated me more than a little bit tbh) when people listen to it for the first time and they’re like “oh! this is amazing! I didn’t know Taylor Swift could do this kind of music!” Because I just want to be like, really?? You didn’t? Because in my opinion, folklore is such a perfect blend of all her skills as an artist and really shows off the stuff she’s been good at from day one.

It’s just so authentically her. The storytelling elements especially have been there since debut. The way she can craft a beautiful narrative but also decorate it with an insanely catchy, singable melody (august) and the way she can parse things down to a simpler, more nostalgic sound (betty).

I consider it my favorite work of hers not just because of what it meant to me at the time (it pretty much got me through the beginning of the pandemic back in 2020) but because it reminds me of why I love her music in the first place. It reminds me of being 13 and listening to Fearless on my iPod by the pool. She has such a talent for making people feel seen through her words, and that’s always been there, whether it’s dressed up with an 80s synthpop beat or a slow, acoustic track.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m grateful that folklore introduced her music to a new audience of people who can grow to love her work. But at the same time I can’t help but be a little irritated because a lot of those people (at least, the ones in my personal life) didn’t take her seriously before, all because they turn their noses up at poppier production styles. Yes, she’s honed her craft since she first started and yes, of course she’s gotten better since the beginning. But that talent and drive that made folklore was there from the start. 🪩🫶🏻
