So yeah it’s a fire
This is my theory on one the greatest songs ever. Ivy.
Two women have an affair
Metaphorically speaking, Ivy started “it” the narrator claims. Ivy started the “fire” in “the house” a sparked romance between her and the narrator that never goes out… the same way Ivy never stops growing… Ivy “starts” the fire, in hopes it kills the husband of the women she loves, but inevitably Ivy dies in the fire too.
Narrator lives. Why? Remember the narrator refers to her house of stone (used like an oxymoron: alive and dead) that’s “covered” in Ivy. Stone doesn’t combust. Remember in the beginning the narrator said “the old widow goes to the stone everyday” referring to a complete stranger visiting that stranger’s husband’s grave. Narrator is at the graveyard too, but not for her dead husband. For Ivy. The narrator just sits there and waits… “grieving for the living,” a metaphor that alludes to the fact that the narrator herself is still alive & still in love. she feels Ivy all over her…but she might as well be dead because she can’t love and be with the person she wants to. Again the Narrator says her “house of stone” is covered in Ivy. and it’s unable to ignite. The narrator is longing for the moment she will see Ivy again. Narrator even says she wishes to “know” the “fatal flaw” that makes Ivy long to be “magnificently cursed.”
She is engulfed in “Ivy” rather than flames. she is stuck, she‘s longing for the moment “the spirit will meet the bones.” Rather than “being on fire” she’s “tangled in Ivy.” She’s using completely opposite reactions (fire & ivy) to describe how they both spread. Narrator “set Ivy” on fire as ivy “covered” narrator with her poisonous leaves. Living vs dead/“grieving for the living.” Notice at the end narrator repeatedly says “you started it!”
She would die for Ivy. Sound familiar?? Ivy is a beautiful song to illustrate a love so deeply rooted. one that is also very deeply forbidden. Like Adam and Eve… but instead it’s two women forbidden to be together. Narrator and Ivy. (poison apple/poison ivy)
