Getting a pedicure AND a massage today. Because fucking treat yo’self. Not only do I need a massage, but I’ve got over 8 hours of credits stacked up so all it costs me is the tip I leave AND I desperately deserve it with how much I have worked my body lately. I did over 40 hours last week and am doing more than that this week too. I deserve a little rest and treatment. Fulfilling needs and wants today folks.

sunday - 3:58 pm - city view: emerald nails, converse with holes in the bottom that i should not have worn in a downpour.
I once sat in my nail salon visibly distressed by choosing a nail color. The nail tech looked my bare arms up and down. “If it takes you this long to choose a color for your nails, it must take you forever to choose your tattoos.”
I glanced at my arms and shrugged. “No, those are usually pretty impulsive. I get an idea for something I like and I walk in and that’s that.”
“Have you ever regretted one?”
I shrugged again. “Nope. No room in my mind for that.”
Now I try to relax a little when it’s time to get my nails done. I don’t have a lot of luxuries that I allow myself. My nails are my thing—my one treat-yo’self item. Which is not easy to give to myself. And I face that fear every 5-8 weeks. (Yes, that’s how hard it is—I have worn my nails for eight weeks while avoiding going back.) (If you’re not a nail person, they usually recommend getting refills every 3 weeks.)
Why is it so hard to allow myself something nice? What happened in my brain that I began to think I don’t deserve anything extra, anything above Maslow’s lowest level of needs?
People who think they are above the material world have somewhat teased me for my nails. How do you do anything with those on? they ask. I’m just surviving, I want to tell them. I just wanted one thing to make me feel like I can stand tall in this world. One thing to make me feel beautiful and powerful. I don’t know why this is it for me, but it is. I spread my fingers out and think, I can make it to tomorrow.
They told us to appreciate the little things in life. They always judge us for what our little things are.
