[Analysis] The Remarried Empress: A Victim Of Circumstance

While the Remarried Empress has been on a well-deserved hiatus, I’ve been reading it over again. I find that re-reading is always interesting because it gives you the chance to see if you might come out with a different opinion or point of view, especially now that you have had some foresight into future events. While I’ve reconsidered my thoughts and feelings on some things in my latest re-read, one thing hasn’t changed and that’s my opinion of Rashta.
Oh, Rashta. The most hated female character in the entire webcomic. Reading the comments wherein she’s often nicknamed “Trashta,” you may be convinced she’s the most hated female character in general. I do understand the criticisms directed at her, however I find it errs toward vitriol and I simply cannot bring myself to the same boiling point when I see her to be a misunderstood victim of her circumstances
Am I saying Rashat is perfect? No.

The makings of a fairytale became a reality for her. Though I don’t believe she truly loves Sovieshu, the Emperor, love isn’t required in order for her to have been sold on this fantasy. Keep all of this in mind as I believe her character flaws stem from this very point.
Rashta has many character flaws, she certainly puts the “Rash” in her name by making quick decisions without thinking about the consequences of her actions. She’ll impulsively lie and be deceptive for reasons that can be vexing for most. She also puts a lot of stock in what people think of her, often leaning into paranoia rather than self-reflection. Moreover, she will position herself to be pitied and doted on by the Emperor.
Petty and annoying things, assuredly. However I don’t believe that these flaws are worthy of such strong disdain, particularly in the beginning episodes of the webcomic.

He actively pitted Rashta against the Empress as he would make a scene over every small thing Navier did. He painted it as though the Empress despised Rashta and was scheming to get rid of her from the start. I believe this caused Rashta to feel the need to lie about Navier’s acceptance of her to save face with the nobles, as well as paint the Empress as a villain to Sovieshu.

Anything she perceives as a risk, no matter how benign it may look on the surface, is detrimental to her well-being, not just a minor concern that can be overlooked. You can find examples of this behavior in Chapters 17 and 18. Viscount Lotteshu, who used to own Rashta, threatened his way into meeting with her after making a scene at the party about her origins.

Through her experiences as a slave and how she is treated thereafter, I believe this is what shapes her opinion of how nobles and royalty behave. They are either sickeningly sweet or horrendously wicked. They may dote on her one moment and the next be plotting for her downfall–and, for Rashta, it is a very steep fall. She is nearly powerless to her circumstance as she is in a constant state of potentially losing everything.
Yes, Rashta lies. Yes, she’ll do petty things to Navier. Yes, she schemes in order to keep herself in her position. However, she is tortuously navigating her way through a world she had lucked into, a world she was never prepared to enter.
Navier, in stark contrast to Rashta, was raised for the sole purpose of being an Empress. She was taught and prepared to handle issues with a level of decorum and intention behind everything she does. Meanwhile, Rashta never had such training and possibly can’t even begin to grasp these concepts as she attempts to, essentially, cosplay the role of a noble that’s been thrust upon her by current circumstances.

Rashta is blinded by her suffering as she impulsively does dishonest and questionable things. Her actions and the actions of Sovieshu are all adding up, plummeting her into a downward spiral in later chapters. Though she never had tact to begin with, her means of avoiding trauma become even more careless and messy. This is a type of hell all on its own, as her attempts to run away from her pain are causing her to careen right toward it. Yet, that’s why I like her as a character, because she is an example of there being no such thing as a “perfect victim.”
Rashta may be flawed, but that doesn’t make her any less of a victim. She has no right to be absolved from any consequences, but I do believe she deserves a little more empathy from readers than what she garners now.

The remarried empress and the adopted child PART 7
The room fell into a tense silence as everyone waited for the two men's next move but they all relaxed when the Empress stepped between them.
"Your majesty, please calm yourself," She said as she gently made him lower the arm that was wielding the sword.
"And prince Heinrey, you are our guest,"
"Please, would the both of you stop?" At this, the two men seemed to back off of each other.
"We'll end dinner here, thank you, everyone, for coming today," She announced and (F/N) let out a small sigh in relief.
*I should have never expected anything else, mother is after all incredible,* (F/N) thought as she sat up and went to her side to begin sending off the guests as protocol dictated.
"Whew, I couldn't stomach any food with how tense it was in there, I hope we can chat more tomorrow your majesty," Princess Circe bid farewell to them both.
"As do I, I hope you can make it tomorrow princess Circe," Her mother answered.
"I wish you a good night princess," (F/N) bid her farewell too.
(F/N) began wishing the guests a goodnight alongside her mother, relaxing with the common occurrence that they would take part in after every dinner with guests, (F/N) smile loosened a bit more, that is until someone else joined them.
"Thank you for coming, your majesty, let's have more fun tomorrow too!" Rashta said with a cherry smile her presence shocking (F/N) and her mother.
*This is weird,* (F/N) thought with a bit of disdain about her not being able to have some time with her mother.
"What is it, sister?" Rashta asked as she noticed Navier looking at her, but (F/N) froze at the way she addressed the Empress.
*Did she...just call her......SISTER?!?!??!* (F/N) had never been so shocked since she learned that she had been adopted by the royal family.
"Oh!" Rashta then turned to someone who had approached them and (F/N) finally noticed the man.
"Grand Duke Kaufman, will you be coming to tomorrow's special banquet?" Rashta asked the man with a smile but her posture was much more different than the usual that it made (F/N) notice.
*She's imitating my mother now?!!* (F/N) thought with disgust coiling in her stomach but decided to ignore it in favor of also bidding farewell to the man to prevent offending him.
"I wish you a pleasant night grand duke Kaufman," (F/N) bowed slightly but the man only looked at the three before walking away without a single word.
(F/N) didn't pay it much mind as her mother addressed Rashta not long after he walked away.
"Rashta, I was going to ask you after the ceremony, but I'll ask you now since you're here," (F/N) looked at her mother wondering what she would ask.
"Why have you been lying and telling other people that I sent you a gift?" (F/N) felt her heart drop.
*I heard nothing of that!* (F/N) realized and wished she had engaged with more guests the days before as she had spent it mostly with Alius and Zaida.
"But it's true that you sent me a gift to welcome me as his majesty's mistress," Rashta said confused this made (F/N) relax a bit noticing that she was sincere in her confusion.
"I don't know how such a misunderstanding occurred, but I've never sent you a gift," Navier said.
"What do you mean, are you still angry at me about the letter incident?"
"I was only trying to help you because it seemed like you didn't want others to know," Rashta tried to explain but then began crying and (F/N) couldn't help but cringe inwardly.
*Why does she cry so much, my mother is just trying to clear a situation of her name being used falsely,* (F/N) thought annoyed but the noticed prince Heinrey and her father come out into the corridor.
"Why are you always so mean to me??" Rashta asked and (F/N) felt a spark of anger in her heart at this ridiculous answer, Rashta would truly tremble if she was ever under her mother's anger.
"What's going on, why is Rashta crying?" The emperor asked angered by what he was seeing.
"I asked her why she lied about me sending her a gift when I've never sent her one," Navier answered calmly.
"Can't you just...overlook it?"
*Is he serious?*
"How can I when the name of the empress is falsely being used?"
"Don't blame Rashta, it's my fault for sending a gift in your name," He sighed.
"Did you really, your majesty?" Rashta asked with a big smile.
"Yes, it seems you've been blamed for something you didn't do," He caressed her face and wiped some of the tears out.
"It's okay your majesty, I'm touched that you did that for me," She said.
*My father has truly lost his mind,* (F/N) sighed silently unable to think of any other reason for him to act so...stupid.
"If your the one who's wronged me...I should be blaming you, you've admitted your fault," Her mother soon said.
"Being the emperor doesn't mean you can misappropriate someone's name,"
"So what is it that you want?" Sovieshu asked.
"An apology, take responsibility for the false information Rashta has spread, and tell people it wasn't me," Navier said with more calm than (F/N) could ever wish to muster.
"Navier.."
"Afraid you'll lose face?"
"Well, I've already lost mine,"
"If sending a gift to Rashta was all it took to make you lose face, how piddling your honor is indeed," This made (F/N) need to rerun the statement in her mind shocked at her father's actions.
"Then I'm sure it'll be a piddling task for you to tell everyone it wasn't me and do make haste," Navier remained firm.
"Why are you being so petty, you didn't use to be like this?" Sovieshu said.
"You took the words right out of my mouth, and don't disrespect me, Sovieshu," (F/N) almost flinched at her mother's cold words but then turned to look at the prince who she had forgotten about and saw how he looked at her mother.
In such an adoring way that almost made it look like he wished to be in Sovieshu's feet, not to be with Rashta but to be the target of her cold gaze and words.
*Oh dear,* (F/N) thought.
"Are you jealous of her?" Sovieshu asked and (F/N) wondered if she was hallucinating by this point.
"The emperor of the eastern empire has bad taste," Prince Heinrey spoke for the first time since the start of the argument.
"Don't fret, your majesty, I'll be sure to spread the news of this truth far and wide," He assured with a smile that would have any girl at his feet, (F/N) was not sure about him anymore.
"Your reputation as the empress won't be smeared because of the emperor's blunder,"
*Oh dear indeed,* (F/N) simply looked up as if asking the gods for patience.
"WHAT?!" Sovieshu asked angered.
"Your highness, so here you are!" A man of blue hair suddenly appeared and took sudden hold of prince Heinrey to start dragging him away.
"I asked you to return early because of an urgent matter,"
"Ah...yes that's right, I'll see you tomorrow then," Prince Heinrey said in a totally different manner than before.
Soon it was only the four of them, but it seemed her mother was tired of this already.
"It is already late, I've stated what I wish, so I will retire," Navier said coldly once again and walked away to her room.
"Honestly, all this just because she hates Rashta," Sovieshu muttered but (F/N) heard him loud and clear.
"I will retire too, tomorrow will be important after all," (F/N) said bowing lightly and walking away, unable to be any more time near her father.
*I will need to wake up early,* (F/N) thought determined to have a say in what kind of rumors would spread tomorrow.
As she arrived at her room Zaida was there to greet and help her prepare for bed.
(F/N) told her about what had happened, and was glad even she could tell how crazy the emperor was acting.
"So what will you do tomorrow?" Zaida asked.
"It's inevitable some unfavorable rumors will spread...but who said they have to be unfavorable for my mother," (F/N) explained with a cold voice.
"So I should wake you up early then?"
"Yes, like normal, I don't want people to think I'm desperate or anything that would just backfire," (F/N) said glad she always woke up early.
"Good night you highness," Zaida bid farewell as she turned out the last light and left the room.
