Analysis of large numbers of ivory rings discovered in Anglo-Saxon burials has revealed that the ivory was sourced from African elephants. These must have been some important folk, obtaining goods all the way from Aksum!

Archaeologists find grave mound solar calendar at Tiel dig
Tumblr media
(An aerial view of the site. Photo: Gemeente Tiel)
"Archaeologists have discovered what they say is a massive outdoor shrine dating back 4,000 years during excavation work near an industrial estate in Tiel in the heart of the Netherlands.
The “spectacular find” covers some four football fields and was used to make sacrifices, for celebrations and rituals, the archaeologists say.
In total, over one million objects have been found at the site, including glass beads which can be traced back to Mesopotamia. They are the oldest beads ever found in the Netherlands and proof there was contact between the inhabitants of both regions, Tiel town council said."

This was not because of any spirit of kindness, but because it was too awkward to dispose of bodies appropriately, and the pace of travel would be seriously slowed before the death.

Extremely nitpicky but I hate white wedding gowns in fantasy, especially when they make absolutely no sense in the setting. No, that culture in the far north that prioritizes function over form and mostly wears heavy furs would not have the means, ability, or desire to make a sleeveless ivory silk gown with a semi-sweetheart neckline. Please be sensible about this and use your creativity instead of just slapping a Kleinfeld wedding gown into a medieval fantasy setting.

I don't know about pre-Greco Egypt but let me just say the Ptolemies out here making the 18th century French aristocracy look nice
"The Ptolemies reorganized her agriculture to yield the absolute maximum, taxed it so that the peasant was left just enough of his harvest to live on, put the rest in the silos at Alexandria, and exporting it all over the Mediterranean pocketed the proceeds."

Trade Links between the Roman Empire and the East
A map illustrating the ever-growing and ever-changing trade network of maritime and overland routes connecting China, India, and the Far East with the Middle East and Europe. Even though the term "Silk Road" was not defined until the late 19th century, the extensive trade exchange between the great ancient civilizations of Greece, Rome, Parthia, India, and China (to name just the most obvious) has been flourishing for millennia.
