GR Corolla Finally Revealed
The reveal of the Toyota GR Corolla in March was a huge surprise to car enthusiasts, as they have been asking Toyota to release a “hot hatch” to the US market for years. Toyota launched their GR, or Gazoo Racing, line in 2017, which represents their original roots of pushing the threshold and creating superior racing and rally vehicles. The official Gazoo Racing team is a division of Toyota that includes all their racing teams, which means that the company truly is invested in this model by putting this badge on it. This new Corolla borrows heavily from it’s Japanese-domestic market counterpart, the Toyota GR Yaris hatchback. Enthusiasts that enjoy tuning and taking their cars to the track have been waiting for Toyota to release a car that appeals to them, and now they only must wait until the end of this year to be able to purchase one. This car boasts all-wheel-drive, 4 doors, a hatchback, and 300 horsepower from a turbocharged 1.6 liter 3-cylinder engine. This car will compete directly with rallycross-inspired hatchbacks such as the Subaru WRX and STi, Mini Cooper Clubman S, the VW Golf R, and the Ford Focus RS, all of which offer a manual transmission, turbocharger, and AWD. Toyota is trying to target both younger and older enthusiasts with this release, but the younger crowd may not be able to foot the bill for a new one just yet. With an estimated MSRP of $40,000, this car will be exclusively for more mature drivers for at least the first few years of production. Toyota also understands that they may be limiting their market of potential buyers by only offering the GR Corolla with 6 speed manual transmissions, as fewer drivers know how to drive a manual than in the past. They feel that this move is the smart one though, as the enthusiast market they are targeting is known to be very vocal about new car releases coming with a 6 speed manual transmission option, and Toyota received a lot of bad publicity when they released their Mk V Supra GR without that manual option.
With Toyota Motor Company being founded in 1937, their life cycle for efficient and reliable gasoline powered cars is reaching maturity. The company is now shifting towards new products to appeal to different markets within the automotive industry, with a heavy focus on hybrids and electric vehicles. It is refreshing to also see a new line of performance vehicles being released under the Toyota badge, as they have been out of the enthusiast car market for almost 20 years. The new GR line of cars released by Toyota puts them into the growth stage again for performance cars, as they are releasing cars that are appealing to a market of drivers that had not considered new Toyotas as performance options for many years. This example of market penetration will hopefully pay off for Toyota, and they should realize profits from their refreshing, sporty, and competitive vehicle lineup. The biggest question with this decision is will the market react positively to this release even after the mixed reviews of the Supra, and will it draw drivers of Subarus, Minis, and Volkswagens towards purchasing a new Toyota?

The man, the myth, the legend, Smokey Nagata and his 2 glorious Supra vmax machines.
"Smokey" hails from the northern parts of Japan in Hokkaido from a farming family. When he got his 1st car, a Mitsubishi Galant GTO, he couldn't even drive it yet but got the boss of a local Toyota dealer to fix it for him to drive only for the school to find out about him driving without a proper license and have him expelled. With nowhere to go, the boss of the dealership employed him and he started to take his Celica he got afterwards to race in the mountains but being up having few competitors, he left and headed to Tokyo.
There, he found work at Trust, subsidiary of GReddy and again tinkered with cars during work time. The bosses knew about it but also liked what he did thus it became a secret between themselves which spawned the name of his future company, "Top Secret". Top Secret then became a shadow company where Smokey would make parts and tune cars slyly as a testbed for both Trust and GReddy and he often took such prototype cars to the street and made a name for himself.
He then had an ambition to do 200mph on public roads and thus he began working on a supermachine and because it was the 90s, its the peak of Japanese automotive industry where everyone is making aftermarket parts for racing and Smokey always has a habit to mix-and-match parts to make things work. Thus for his 1st project to hit 200mph, he got a A80 Mk 4 Supra chassis and stuffed a RB26 from a Nissan GTR R32 into it tuned to 1,001hp. Reason on why he did not use the 2JZ is that for high speed runs, he needed the top end power which the RB provides better than the 2JZ which works on low-end torque power better. Thus with everything assembled, he was about to test it but then, a call.
Max Power was a car and young adult magazine at that time that often talks about cars and also crazy antics people do with cars and hearing of Smokey's antics before hand, they challenged Smokey to bring the car to a foreign country and do his run. Smokey found it amusing and took up the challenge while picking the UK and the infamous A1. While setting up all that, he got Option magazine roped in to document it all too.
While in the UK, the runs began and Smokey did burnouts for theatrics and also to warm the tires but both time he tried, issues kept popping up. 1st run saw the car slightly backfiring due to the petrol running way too lean and the 2nd run saw the hood trying to detach itself from the car thus forcing him to slow down. 3rd run was better but only able to achieve 194mph which wasn't bad but not the target. However as he was easing down from his 3rd run, problem. The cops caught on to him and were trying to arrest him. Being the polite Japanese he is, he pulled over on the road shoulder despite being able to easily outrun the cops. He was then promptly charged with his international license revoked for 1 year, barred from entering the UK for 10 years, a few hundred pounds of fines and had to have everything that the cameramen and footage from the camcorder strapped to the Supra deleted. Alas, being a brave man, Smokey snuck a storage device containing the clips and escaped back to Japan and soon, he became an overnight sensation as Option ran a whole magazine worth of content of the run in the UK and that helped Smokey's failing business.
Discontent that he did not manage to hit 200mph, he decided to try again with seemingly the same formula but slightly alterized it. He got another A80 Supra body, streamline it but this time slapped a V12 from a Toyota Century and 2 big turboes good for 900+hp. He then brought it to the Shutoku line and ripped it. His target was 260mph but despite trying and trying, all he got was 241mph which was great enough as he had unofficially broken 2 records already with 2 different cars. 1 being the only foreign car to do more than 190mph in the UK and also the 2nd one, till now (I think) is the only vehicle to do more than 220mph on public roads not only in Japan but also the world.

The Interesting Future Of The Supra
The new Supra’s apparently got fantastic handling, apparently so good that it is, according to some auto journalists, better than the Supra’s Z4 relative (something that comes, at least partially, from the structural benefit of not being a convertible). Unfortunately its weakness comes from the same place as the 90s darling RX-7 does: Its powertrain.
Gas Goes In, Numbers Come Out
Though BMW straight-sixes might be some of the more refined engines to come out of Germany, just like Rotaries, maintenance isn’t necessarily the easiest among automobiles and parts tend to be pricey. On that note, Rotary engines are the weak spot of the RX-7, with excessive maintenance and a certain degree of specialized mechanical knowledge required to work on them. These two (Mazda’s Wankel and BMW’s B58) aren’t inherently bad, and I’d even venture to say that they’re *good* engines within their specific contexts (Rotary torque numbers, Being in a BMW), while still being a weak spot in the cars as they age.
In the entry-level sports car segment, and in competition against the Corvette was the RX-7, which put out numbers around 250 horsepower. Though a lighter vehicle, it couldn’t compare to the Corvette’s 400 horsepower. When talking numbers, the six-cylinder in the newest Supra puts out around 340 horsepower (with the Z4 making about the same), as opposed to the Corvette’s nigh-500 horsepower offering. The numbers would be respectable if the two weren't vying for much the same audience: buyers willing to pay a little extra (but not too much, mind you) for a performance car.
Automotive Longevity
Now obviously these complaints don’t matter. The new Supra, despite Mk 4 fanboy wailings, will continue to be a strong leader in the entry-level refined-sports-car market. The C8, which offers Ferrari numbers for a lot less money, is set to go up in price after its initial few model years. It offers a great value, even at $70k. Even so, individuals searching for a solid front-engine sport car (more powerful than the Miata), those with an aversion to domestic American sports cars, and people who like to wear Supreme logos (ironically or not) will still buy the new (A90) Supra.
What does matter is the used market. Both the RX-7 and the Mk 4 Supra truly bloomed on the used market. Tuners, drifters and younger enthusiasts all took to these versatile platforms and turned them into true performance machines, doing things with them that those who bought them new would never have imagined. The Mk 4 Supra is renowned for how well its Toyota powerplant handles high horsepower, with many examples hitting that legendary 1000+ horsepower output.
Ah Yes, Reliability
The Mk 4 Supra has something the that the RX-7, and its generational successor, do not: A reliable powertrain. Hear me out: rotary engines might be fun(?) to work on, but they don’t possess the best reputation when it comes to reliability. The rotary is an engine format that, like the layout of the boxer or VR5, is obscure and should be preserved. That said, it isn’t reliable, especially not in cars on the used market. The same goes for the BMW B58, albeit for different reasons.
Before we continue, I do acknowledge the strong fanbase that the rotary engine holds. I appreciate their enthusiasm and dedication to preserving such a unique powertrain. Despite this, Apex seals give up pretty regularly. Too regularly to warrant applying the label of “Reliable Engine.”
Unforgivable Sin: A Prediction
Eventually the newest Supra will just be known as the A90 Supra, as newer cars come along to supplant it. The Supras will once again filter down to younger tuners who’ll pull as much power out of them as they can. My predictions as to how they’ll do this stem from the example of the RX-7, a car that I’ve just spent paragraphs equating to the A90. As an agile, sturdy platform that appears to lack reliable power, the Supra will come to face the inevitable, just as the RX-7 did: The V8 Swap.
The legendary LS Swap has been a common, if controversial, engine-swap for the RX-7. The platform handles beautifully, but between weaker numbers and the aforementioned issues that the Rotary layout possesses, the sturdy reliability that the Chevy V8 provides is too much of a temptation to those who might waver in their purism. Though I haven’t taken too close a look at the Supra’s engine bay, there are examples of Z4 LS Swaps already out there.
Don’t Kill Me Yet
You might argue that the legendary Toyota 2JZ has already been swapped into multiple A90s. You would be correct in saying this, but I’d encourage you to take note that production on that engine ended in 2007, while the LS is still going strong. Additionally, I can safely predict that any number of wrecked Camaros from various teen irresponsibilities will feed the young tuners of the future long after the supply of 2JZs has run out or been hoarded away by collectors who watched too much Fast and the Furious. Plus, the LS allows for the insertion of a manual gearbox, something that the A90 Supra has yet to offer.
If electrification and computerization don’t wipe out the automotive landscape with ugly, shrink-wrapped-looking iPads-with-wheels, you can look forward to finding old Supras, once young, now holding Corvette secrets under their rounded hoods and young drivers behind their wheels.
