God I miss Toonami and Toonami Jetstream 😭

the one thing i think you need to know about me to understand why my taste is so bad is that i was born in 1995 and was therefore a gay preteen weeb between 2006 and 2009. my ability to like anything good was, frankly, devastated by this experience. toonami jetstream was showing prince of tennis and mär. i could watch pussycat dolls music videos on demand at my grandma's house. hot topic was selling naruto headbands. +anima was on the shelves at barnes and noble. my first encounter with smut was reading a lemon on ff.net and then my sexuality and gender were permanently altered by having access to the music video for patron tequila by the paradiso girls and genderbent tenipuri fanart and fic. it would have taken a miracle for me to have made it out unscathed tbh

my journey with one piece has been so wild. it started when I was a kid watching toonami jetstream way back when. I would just watch whatever came on Saturday nights. I liked it but I never got into it bc kid brain and I couldn't commit to things like I can now. but I liked it and when I reached middle school, I tried to watch it for realsies, but shit happened in my life and I couldn't dedicate the time. I still enjoyed fanfics and fanart tho. saw manga panels and stuff. then I tried again in high school and, again, life threw me curve balls and I couldn't dedicate the time. then I tried again in college and I got about two hundred episodes deep before life threw me in for a loop again.

it was only until recently that I was really able to dedicate the time. like sit down and watch all the episodes consecutively. and I think what helped was now I have friends who are also insanely into it and keep pushing me to watch more. so this thing that had been casually a thing in my life for the past twenty years now has a fucking chokehold on me and I don't see it releasing it's iron grip anytime soon and I'm perfectly fine with it lmfao. it has consumed my entire life.

I never thought I would rewatch One Piece from the beginning but I’m so glad I did!

I started watching One Piece weekly via Toonami Jetstream as a kid and in 2020 I stopped. The pacing was pretty bad so I decided to take a break and binge all of it later.

When I wanted to come back to it, I realized that I had forgotten so many of the characters and details of the storyline. I didn’t understand a lot of the gravity of the crew’s actions and their implications as I grew up. I only remembered all the cool adventures but the overarching storyline went over my head.

Rewatching the show, everything makes sense and it’s easy to see how the plot cascaded into what it is currently. As of now, I’m still right before the time skip, but I’m so excited to get back to the Wano arc (just before I took a break). It was super cool how the plot was set up and so many characters were introduced early on. Lots of foreshadowing as well. I was hesitant to rewatch but I genuinely wouldn’t have appreciated the upcoming arcs as much if I didn’t.

So if you’re like me, I recommend watching from the beginning !! Jamming to all of the openings again was very nostalgic as well — but if you don’t have the time, reading the manga is probably best. I’m just stubborn and want to be an anime-only since I grew up with it as an anime

REVIEW | "RYOMA! The Prince of Tennis <DECIDE>" | B3 - Boston Bastard Brigade

Back in college, I was introduced to The Prince of Tennis via Toonami Jetstream. While the English voice acting was a little wooden, the tale of wonder boy Ryoma Echizen had me hooked to see how he’d reach the top of the pedestal. Sadly, I never got to see how Ryoma went from being the prince to the king of the court, as the streaming site stopped updating episodes a year into its run. (Toonami Jetstream would also be shut down months after Cartoon Network first cancelled the iconic anime block.) Nevertheless, I had hopes that one day I’d run into this tennis prodigy somewhere down the line.

Now nearly two decades later, Ryoma Echizen has returned to America in a new big-screen CGI adventure, which takes place in-between Takeshi Konomi’s original and sequel manga. Entitled RYOMA! The Prince of Tennis <DECIDE>, the film has our titular character in America bettering his skills. After saving his friend/love interest Sakuno from a gang of tennis-playing thugs, she and Ryoma find themselves warped back in time. In the past, the two run into Ryoma’s father, who is just about to partake in the US Open that led him to mysteriously retire immediately afterwards. But when Sakuno gets kidnapped by a gang of black-suited gangsters, it’s up to Ryoma to save her while possibly changing his father’s fate for the better.

Despite its popularity in Japan, Ryoma Echizen’s story never reached the same heights as Slam Dunk, Haikyū!!, or even YURI!!! on ICE. Perhaps Ryoma’s cocky attitude was a turnoff for some, with his personality being a mix of Denis Leary and Macaulay Culkin. One wishes that this return of The Prince of Tennis would be one for the record books, a possible redemption song for those who were initially wary of a protagonist whose ego was as big as his sports cred. Alas, this film suffers from tennis elbow right at the get-go!

For starters, did you know that RYOMA! The Price of Tennis <DECIDE> was a musical? At its start, viewers will be greeted with an incredibly awkward and poorly choreographed song-and-dance number, with as much emotion showcased as a Shenmue game on Dreamcast. Some will hope that this is just a silly way for a popular shonen sports anime to reintroduce its viewers to Ryoma’s world. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

That was, imo, the single most perfect invention in the whole series and I. want. it. back. Secondly, I want to see more of Karin's chakra chains and just her being capable and powerful in-general. She is such a badass, and I would have really wanted to see something done with the insane amount of power and sheer will she has, not even combat-wise but just as a character. So much untapped potential. As for what they would individually do; it's hard to say because as far as I can remember Sasuke didn't have a specific plan other than "Konoha must burn" which is like, go off bro, but not very specific.

I'm going to imagine that the more rounded out plan would look something like taking out the main leaders (the kage, elders, and whatever supporters they had) and replacing them with people in full support of reform and then making that reform happen.

I figure Sasuke wouldn't do anything to create more children like him (abandoned, alone, etc) and would deal with any opposing shinobi in a more fair way than the Uchiha were treated. This also means that he probably won't harm any civilians. There will probably be a battle but not a very long one so I'll focus more on what they'd do in the aftermath.

Suigetsu - most trusted general bc he's ruthless in battle but will follow Sasuke's rules even if he doesn't agree - also in charge of hunting down radicals and bringing them in/getting rid of them

Karin - help select new leaders. she's intuitive and smart and would be great at this - oversees infrastructure change. She's meticulous and has clear vision of what order ought to look like (she was the warden of a jail for the longest time she'd be perfect for this) - also in charge of keeping track of people in-need of reparation from the shinobi system and making sure it happens

Juugo - Sasuke's right-hand man bc he can't really leave (and Sasuke promised to keep him sane)...but also because he'd be good at it. He has a great heart, and would help keep things honest. On that note he'd also be the one talking through things with Sasuke the most since he's literally always there - Handles the long distance communications between Sasuke and the rest of Team Taka when they're abroad - OK I can't think of more r.n. but if you guys think of stuff let me know and I'll update the list.

Question 2: I first watched Naruto when it was available online on toonami jetstream (does this date me? probably, haha) and I was 11 or 12. I'm pretty sure Sasuke was my fav. from the start and when my siblings and I would play Naruto--as in playing pretend or make believe or whatever you call it--I'd be him.

He was more my type of character, and then as I got a bit older I started actually relating to him more and more and it just spiraled from there. It wasn't just relating to him though? for a while I just kinda wanted to be him. IDK how to explain it, but he was basically my avatar character as I was going through life for quite a long time (as in I definitely tried to resolve a lot of trauma vicariously through him in my writings....) and I would write fanfic and long winded character analysis as a sort of escapism, eventually moving on to creating AU's that actually bring me joy. Sasuke is also the reason I spend most of teenage hood studying psychology (it started as research for a fanfic, shhhhh) Long story short I'm pretty sure I realized I loved Sasuke when I saw that he was hurting like I was and also didn't have a place to talk about it, like I didn't. But also like, on a surface level I thought he was so cool and I literally wanted that to be me so badly
