Round 1: Nuea and Toh Ep 7 Kiss (Secret Crush on You) vs Tin and Tol Bed Kiss (Triage)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Submitted Reasons Under Cut]
Nuea and Toh Ep 7 Kiss: "The chemistry is fire and they are both dying to kiss each and just sooo into each other (especially the part when Nuea was going to leave but turns back to kiss the life out of Toh against metal gate)."
Tin and Tol Bed Kiss: "the “how many times have we met?” “countless times.” the “i’m more than willing to go back thousands more times if it means I can save you.” the “my heart is beating fast. am I about to have a heart attack?” LIKE THEY’RE EVERYTHING TO ME"

Secret Crush on You says that you cannot be too much, that you cannot be too much of who you are, that you should not be afraid to take up space and to be yourself, that you are you and who you are matters. The biggest growth in the story is showing the baby queer gang that they can and should take up space, be present, show themselves, and to take pride in being themselves and not try to be anyone else.
Nuea frowns when Toh gets a makeover and gives him an outfit based on who he knows he is to wear to the party where he goes public about their relationship.
Jao defends Sky to his friends and asks him to stop worrying about what anyone else thinks and promises to love him as long as he lives and to pursue him as long as Jao cares in return.
Touch beams at Daisy and uses their pronouns and uses the proper linguistics and creates a secret little language to show that he sees them and loves them for exactly who they are and what makes them smile.
You can never be too much, too queer, too big, too quiet, too nervous, too loud, too awkward to be loved.

Why Nuea loves Toh
I swear this is my last essay about Nuea.
Tumblr media
So, Toh asked a really great question in the finale about why Nuea loves him, and I wanna give my take on it, but first since all of us here saw that parallel between Nuea and Kiyoi, I think we first need to address the differences between them so we can better understand where Nuea is coming from and what he needs in a relationship.
First off, we need to look at Nuea and Kiyoi's backgrounds to understand that while yes both of them are treated like idols- they are very different. Kiyoi was left alone a lot as a child, he felt unloved and unhappy, and that’s why he wanted to go into the TV because everyone was always smiling and that was his escape from his lonely life. He desperately needs someone to love him.
Tumblr media
Nuea is very different because he has a loving family. He has friends that support him and care about him. Kiyoi had none of that. Nuea’s problem is that the masses at school treat him like an idol which is dehumanizing. They don’t bother getting to know him, they just come up and ask for his photo or a video message or whatever else they want without caring about his feelings or bothering to get to know him at all. Even Proud didn’t seem to know him. It seems like they were just banging, not actually dating, and she was using him as an arm piece. Even their break up didn’t seem to be about losing Nuea as a person so much as losing him as an object to show off.  We can tell from the way she talked about him and dismissed his feelings entirely.
The thing about Nuea is that he is a really good person- he goes out of his way to help people (Ep. 1), he's playful, hardworking (basketball), responsible (speaking at his parent's anniversary, his determination to get Toh's parents' approval, etc.) and is so fiercely loyal and loving, but most people just see: rich, popular, attractive, and athletic. I think this is actually part of why he is such an exhibitionist about his relationship with Toh. He wants people to see that this is his real life beyond their shallow images of him.
Tumblr media
Now for why he loves Toh. Nuea said that at first he was mostly just curious which makes sense. He had this weird little guy sneaking around and taking pictures of him from afar without ever approaching him. This is interesting because we know most people don’t hesitate to just come up and ask whatever they want from Nuea. They can come get pics with him because they know he’ll say yes. But instead Toh just follows him around. This makes him different from everyone else. Knowing that Nuea feels like most people don’t actually see him, part of that curiosity and interest must have subconsciously been about whether or not Toh did see him. That thought took hold and thus, suddenly, as Nuea said, seeing Toh made his day. There was someone there watching him, seeing him, and loving him, with NO expectations, no demands, nothing. Someone loving him selflessly.
Tumblr media
So, he started looking for him. He wanted more of that good feeling. He wanted closer. He wanted to know Toh. Nuea said he looked all over the place, and in the novel apparently it took 6 months before he found him to invite him to take photos at Lan’s party. By this time, he was already attracted- though more to the idea of Toh than anything else. But in real life, this is what attraction is like. You find them attractive or you get curious about them, then you want to know more about them and spend time together.
So, Nuea starts finding ways to spend time together. Based on his behavior with Toh, we can see that this is someone he feels totally comfortable being himself with (in comparison to his constantly cool persona with Proud), and moreover, wants to show himself to. He wants Toh to see him as he is: the pouting, playful, sexual, and deeply affectionate guy beyond the “cool” persona. He wants to know Toh as well because he’s unique and different and interesting, and makes Nuea feel so good.
Tumblr media
Spending time together, this love grew- they are both a little needy and unhinged, they are both very sexual and playful, they find joy just being together doing whatever. In Nuea’s mind this is the person he wants to keep, the person that makes him happy and that he can shower love on. Toh is the person who sees him for who he is and isn’t after him because of his looks or money.
This is why Nuea cried when he found Toh’s collection. He thought Toh had been seeing him as he is and trusting him, but in reality, as much as Toh does know Nuea, his lack of self-confidence kept him from allowing himself to fully trust Nuea or see them as equals.
However, they communicated their feelings and worked it out. Toh knows that he can keep Nuea now and can allow himself to trust that this is real, and Nuea can have this weird little person that makes him happy and helps him feel like he can be his genuine self. We can see this commitment and equality throughout the last few episodes: meeting each other’s parents, being switches, and their shared apartment filled with their shared memories.
So, overall, the way I see it, this story encapsulates what love is for a lot of us. It's being with that person that makes you happy, that person you enjoy being with and that you can be yourself with. Love doesn't need a bigger reason than that.

The best part about scoy is that all the characters that are usually used just for comic relief in other bl series are main characters with happy lives. The chubby kid is happy with his boyfriend, the weird kid is so in love with his boyfriend and the trans girl is loved and accepted by her boyfriend. Also love how the popular tropes fall in love with stereotypically unpopular or "funny/weird" trope people. The sapphic couple aren't given big plotlines :( but they're shown to be intimate and happily kissing and cuddling in front of their friend group who awww at their relationship . Like everyone is loved for who they are. Ik a lot of y'all would've dropped this series after one or two episodes but I PROMISE YOU ITS SO WORTH WATCHING 9.6/10

I like the fact that nuea always bends down to toh's height and looks him in the eyes . And it's just so symbolic for me i don't know it's like him saying "I love you and you are my equal, you don't have to put me on a pedestal" like that's love , it's in small gestures like these .

I think most of us ("bl watchers") are watching Cutie Pie and SCOY at the same time, and it's kind a inevitable to pit them against each other...or at least I can't help it, the whole Why R U? syndrome thing, you know? And I've got to admit that at first Cutie Pie was IT, so good, I couldn't wait for the next episode, and SCOY was alright if "a bit" cringy. But now... I don't know what happened to Cutie Pie but it went off the rails for me, it became so problematic without seeing it or addressing it as problematic that by now I just keep watching just for SynNuea, both mains are quite difficult to watch, to the point I get sort of uncomfortable when they come on screen (so all the time, I know, why do I keep watching?!)
On the other hand, SCOY turn out to be pretty good, like, really good. Yes, it's sooooo cringy, but it's meant to be cringy, it is designed to be so ridiculous at times that makes you hide your face in the pillow. But then. the problematic parts are seen as such and addressed and dealt with. Some could've had a better treatment (like the whole Jao being body conscious) but it's there, and the relationships (I think) are quite healthy and wholesome, Toh definitely became one of my favorite characters and I'm gonna admit I want to be like him a little bit, to have his confidence and positive attitude and outlook in life. And the friendship between Toh, Jao, Daisy and Som is amazing.
TL:DR, if you're wondering what to watch I'd recommend SCOY, get past the initial cringe and keep going, it gets really good and it's pretty much pure fluff... Cutie Pie, not so much

Secret Crush on You truly said "People talk about their issue when they're in love. They cry and they whine and they sulk and they pout and they talk and they listen. People listen. People care about the people they love and when the people they love say they are hurting them they change. People are not static, people do not say that they will not change. People grow and people learn and when a person loves, they grow with and for the person they love. Strength comes from love and strength brings change and growth and people can get better, people can be who they are and still get better for the person they love. You can be a weirdo and an oddball and still find a way to be a better person without changing who you are and you can be loved for who you are and you can still grow. Love and life are never static" and I don't know how I'll ever recover from this show.

One thing I really just need to say about Scoy is that unlike a lot of BL out there, this narrative and character development is so tight. No plot holes, no suddenly out of character/irrational reactions for the sake of drama, but instead an actual circular narrative that really tied back to the beginning to show the growth and change from that starting point with no loose ends or wasted chances.
Toh's collection is now not just pictures of Nuea taken from afar, it's pictures of them together, pictures they've taken of each other, their memories they both share, all put together in their shared space, their home.
Jao who always felt awkward and uncomfortable with himself and around others isn't afraid to go anywhere now because he found his home and his confidence with Sky.
Daisy really deserved so much more than a 5 second conversation, but the point still stands that she found so many people who love her as she is and just want to see her happy including someone who can love her as a romantic partner with no demands or disgust or uncertainty- only love, patience, and acceptance.
Nuea who had been treated like some untouchable, perfect idol, finally broke through the lens and was able to get Toh to see him as he is- an ordinary person full of love and devotion that just wants to have that love and devotion returned.
Sky who even at the beginning was compared negatively with Nuea, who never felt as cool or smart, found someone who sees him for all the good that he is, and loves him unconditionally.
I wish we could have had more episodes to fully delve into the stories of all the characters. I could watch so many seasons of these characters. Admittedly, some parts of the finale were a little rushed, but I really loved this series and I know I'm going to be re-watching it so many times.
The message is so beautiful and so well crafted.
Everyone, no matter how much they do or do not align with what people think is "normal" or "good" deserves friendship, love, family, and acceptance, and deep down that support is what we all want. The "cool kids" like Nuea and Sky, the "weird kids" like Toh, everyone just wants to feel seen for who they are and loved genuinely.
All those people out there that stopped watching because of "cringe" are the people that need this lesson the most, and I hope they give it another chance because that's really the point. Learning to accept other people even for the eccentricities and differences is so important. It's when we can look beyond those differences and see each other as real people, that everyone can feel safer being themselves and know that they are worthy.
