How Bram Stoker’s Dracula Sired Today’s Hot Vampires
How Bram Stoker’s Dracula Sired Today’s Hot Vampires
Far behind us are the days when the idea of a vampire in movies and television strictly evoked the personage of a pasty, widow-peaked fiend or a shockingly bony Nosferatu lurking in the shadows. Nowadays, when one is asked how they perceive vampires in film and TV, we are more likely to learn that their sentiments towards those of the blood-sucking persuasion have been deeply romanticized.…

I created a rune website
I have tried to write it from a modern Heathen approach, while still being based on actually historical information. It is split into two main parts:
The main part is my commentary on the Old English Rune Poem, and my attempts to contextualise the verses and interpret them in ways that can be meaningful today.
The other part gives a small bit of general background information about the runes and the poem, as well as talking through the history of runic divination and its Modern and largely racist roots (this is mostly based on the hard work by @thorraborinn, @mannazandwyrd and @obligate-rebel), and actual historic uses of runes in magic. I have also included some of my ideas about using runes for both divination and magic today (that isn’t just taken from Thorsson/List).
I have tried to take a somewhat different approach to what you find in most metaphysical sites/books you can get about runes today. I hope some of you find it useful!

A new design which I finished yesterday!
The text is a blessing I wrote, it's in modern English on one beast, and then my attempt at translating it into old English on the other, both written in futhorc runes.
I'm really pleased with how this turned out.
If you like it, you can get it on my Redbubble page here.

My mum really likes horses, so I drew this image as a birthday present for her.
I also made a single horse version, and decided to add the text of the Old English Rune Poem verse for ᛖ (horse) to it.

As usual, you can find both on my Redbubble:

My #1 post of 2022

A knotwork design of Yggdrasil that I drew. The runes on the end of the branches are the initials of the names of the Nine Worlds (although I used the Anglicised ON names but wrote them in OE runes, because that's how I roll).
The runes on the trunk are a prayer I wrote then translated into Old English (written boustrophedon style in OE runes).

Remergence. It's a word you see everywhere on the internet these days. Not in the sense of a swimmer coming up for air between strokes, but more like a bloated corpse washed ashore after not being loaded with enough weight to keep it down. Troublesome tweets, offensive interview clips, skits of racist comedy: these are the things that tend to "resurface" in the modern age. The moment they rise to the surface, the seagulls descend. The latest celebrity to be caught up in the "resurfaced tweets" frenzy is filmmaker and actor Taika Waititi. The 46-year-old New Zealander recently directed the Marvel blockbuster Thor: Love and Thunder, and made headlines on August 9 after his surprise wedding to pop star Rita Ora. Many have argued that the tweets, shared by Waititi nearly a decade ago in January 2013, were transphobic and offensive. After making a series of derogatory comments about a beauty pageant, she wrote, “No disrespect to men who want to be/dress like women. She should have just said that her makeup looks masculine.” In another tweet she wrote: “My trans friends can walk in heels. but you're right, real kathoey are more handsome." (“Kathoey” is a Thai term with a complex history of meanings related to transgender people, especially women.) Waititi was not a well-known public figure at the time (a small role in Green Lantern and his relatively unknown independent film Boy were his most notable credits), so the comments have not elicited any substantial reaction so far. Responses have ranged from disappointment, through demands for an apology, to somewhat cheerful condemnation. But even if we all agree that his tweets are objectionable, is it really good for someone to dive 10 years into the past to get a quick “gotcha”? These types of micro-scandals — that is, Internet PR mishaps that never threaten to jeopardize a career — tend to follow the same pattern. Once the offending material has circulated enough online, the celebrity is forced to own up to his mistake and vow to change, in a standardized act of self-preservation: repentance as brand management. In the past two years, we've seen this happen to celebrities like actors Neil Patrick Harris and Ellie Kemper, comedians Joe Rogan and Randy Rainbow, game show host Ken Jennings, and many, many plus. Not all of these transgressions are as serious as others, of course. I'm sure few would argue that Waititi's tweets deserve the same reaction as his use of the "N-word” by Rogan in the past or Harris' decision to serve a steak dish modeled after Amy Winehouse's decomposing corpse at a Halloween party. But the process is always the same and, in most cases, ends with a humiliated apology. (Waititi has not yet responded to the criticism she has received; The Independent has contacted a representative for comment). For many people, especially those on the political right, these public shaming displays are part of what has come to be called "cancel culture." Although the term is too often confused with the simple notion of accountability, there is no denying that there are cases where social media's thirst for instant exposure has inflated the seriousness of historical infractions. The more this happens, the harder it will be to convince those who speak out against “cancel culture” of the need for proper accountability from today's public figures. This is not to downplay the pain of people who are offended by Waititi's tweets, of course, but society's understanding of trans people and trans issues has evolved a lot even in the decade since his tweets, and language norms have changed to reflect this. Surely there are more urgent and consequential battles to fight. To some extent, the most pertinent critiques of Waititi and his relationship to queerness are contemporary. Waititi has worked hard to position himself as a force for positive change within the typically heteronormative space of blockbuster movie production. After Waititi told audience members
at a screening of love and thunder that the film would be “supergay,” queer Marvel fans were disappointed to learn that the film’s actual LGBT+ content was rather minimal (a same-sex kiss on the hand is the rare highlight). Some have dismissed his approach to his films as Thor from “queerbaiting” [promocionar falsamente que tienen contenido queer], as it uses the promise of queerness on screen as a marketing strategy, but then reneges on that promise in the final product. Waititi elsewhere seems to have encouraged queer fans to follow him. He currently stars in and produces the queer-focused pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death. In an interview with the magazine Out about the gay content of love and thunder, joked about being a "little gay icon" and told the outlet that "we're all queer" (meaning human). Perhaps this complicated relationship he currently has with queer, and with the queer community, makes his tweets from a decade ago all the more worthy of scrutiny. Or maybe it makes them a distraction. What is expected to be achieved with a retroactive public shaming? It could be that an apology, however perfunctory, is enough. It can be argued that even a fully performative apology is useful in the long run to renegotiate the limits of what can be said publicly. Gradually, reaction after reaction, the rudiments of hate speech drift away from the mainstream. In this way, perhaps we can view public shaming as an exercise in harm reduction. Still, it's hard to read the reactions to Waititi's resurfaced tweets and identify this kind of bigger picture. All I see is a man who said inappropriate things a long time ago, not knowing that his words would, or could, one day turn against him. I'm not excusing it. But at some point, we'll all have to decide if it's better to let the tide wash away the uncomfortable memories.

From 2018-2020, Brett Favre’s charitable foundation, Favre 4 Hope, which has a stated mission to support disadvantaged children and cancer patients, donated more than $130,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi Athletic Foundation during the same years that Favre was working to finance a new volleyball center at the school.
Favre, a Southern Mississippi alumnus, is embroiled in a welfare scandal — extensively reported by nonprofit watchdog Mississippi Today — in which millions of dollars earmarked for people in need were misappropriated. Favre received $1.1 million for speeches he did not make, according to a state auditor report and court documents, and was instrumental in moving more than $5 million in welfare dollars toward the building of the volleyball facility while his daughter was a player on the USM volleyball team. He is among dozens of individuals and organizations being sued by the state. Favre paid back the $1.1 million, though the state says he still owes $228,000 in interest. He has not been charged with wrongdoing and posted on social media that he did not know where the funding for the volleyball facility came from.
In the same years Favre was soliciting money to build the volleyball facility, his charitable foundation, which received public donations, significantly increased its contributions to USM’s athletic fundraising arm. Tax records show that Favre 4 Hope gave the USM Athletic Foundation $60,000 in 2018, when no other charity received more than $10,000. The next year, it gave $46,817; the next highest gift, to the Special Olympics of Mississippi, was $11,000. In 2020, Favre 4 Hope sent USM’s Athletic Foundation $26,175; no other organization received more than $10,000.
Tax records also show that in 2015, when Favre’s daughter was a volleyball player at Oak Grove High in Hattiesburg, the Favre 4 Hope foundation donated $60,000 to that school’s booster club, the largest grant made by Favre 4 Hope that year. The Oak Grove Booster Club subsequently granted $60,349 to the high school with the stated purpose being: “assist to build athletic facility.”
While the tax documents don’t disclose any potential conditions Favre 4 Hope may have placed on the grants to the USM Athletic Foundation or the Oak Grove Booster Club, experts were skeptical that those donations aligned with Favre 4 Hope’s stated mission to support “charitable organizations whose focus is to provide support for disadvantaged children” and “nonprofits that provide assistance to breast cancer patients.”
“You can’t say you’re raising money for one purpose and then spend it on something totally different. Charities have an ethical obligation, and in some cases a legal obligation, to fulfill the intentions of its donors in the way funds are spent,” said Laurie Styron, executive director of CharityWatch.
“There’s the letter of the law, there’s the spirit of the law and it’s something where it would probably be tough to make a legal case but it still doesn’t look good,” said Rick Cohen, Chief Operating Officer of the National Council of Nonprofits. “It isn’t unheard of for a nonprofit to expand its mission or change its mission over time if they find they need to redirect. That does not seem to be the case here.”
Favre’s attorney declined to comment as did Favre’s NFL agent, Bus Cook, who is listed as one of Favre 4 Hope’s directors on tax documents. The Athletic attempted to contact six others listed as directors on Favre 4 Hope tax filings. Those individuals either declined to comment or didn’t respond to interview requests.
The Athletic sent emails and left voice messages seeking comment from Christi Holloway, the CFO of the USM Athletic Foundation, and Jeremy McClain, USM’s athletic director, who on 2020 tax filings was listed as the foundation’s CEO. Those requests for comment went unanswered. USM’s communications office also did not respond to interview requests.
Favre and his wife, Deanna, started Favre 4 Hope — initially called the Brett L. Favre Foundation — in 1995, his fourth season as Green Bay’s starting quarterback. The Favres directed the foundation’s money to charities such as the Boys and Girls Clubs of Green Bay and Gulfport, Miss., and Gaits To Success, an equine therapy program in Favre’s hometown of Kiln, Miss.
They raised money by hosting annual events: golf tournaments, dinners and auctions in Green Bay and a celebrity softball game, which drew a crowd of 8,500 fans in Appleton, Wis. in 2005. In the foundation’s first decade, it donated small amounts to a long list of charities. Forty-four organizations received grants in 2007, including 19 for $5,000 or less. Starting in 2009, the list of charities never topped 14 and the size of the donations grew.
Deanna Favre was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. A year later, she launched her own charity, the Deanna Favre Hope Foundation. That year, the Appleton Post-Crescent reported she sold 210,000 pink Packers “G” logo baseball hats to raise over $1 million for breast cancer research.
On Jan.1, 2010, the Favres merged their two charities, creating Favre 4 Hope. Deanna’s foundation, which focused on helping underprivileged or uninsured women get preventative breast cancer screenings, added $632,713 to the collective pot, pushing Favre 4 Hope’s revenue to $1,767,864 in 2010. The mission statement of the joint foundation was amended to add Deanna’s cause, breast cancer patients, and to include Minnesota as an area of focus as Favre played his final two NFL seasons (2009-10) for the Vikings.
From 2001 (the first year that the foundation’s tax forms are publicly available) to 2020, Favre 4 Hope gave $5,492,721 in grants, averaging $274,636 in donations per year.
“One of the things I am most proud of about all the things I have been able to achieve is being able to give away so much money and help so many people with Favre 4 Hope,” Favre told the Associated Press in 2020. “Special Olympics, Cystic Fibrosis, Make-A-Wish Foundation, a big chunk of money to the Children’s Hospital in Minneapolis, to St. Jude and to Ronald McDonald House.”
In 2014, when his daughter Breleigh was a promising sophomore on the Oak Grove High varsity team, Favre led the charge for a new volleyball facility at the school. At the Oak Grove Booster Club board meeting on Nov. 18, 2014, Favre told the board he had donors lined up to help pay for the facility and that he had spoken to then-USM athletic director Bill McGillis about hosting a college volleyball tournament at the building in 2015. He encouraged board members to seek out additional donors and passed out fundraising brochures.
When the Lamar County School Board passed the $1 million project in 2015, Brett and Deanna Favre were reported to be among the community members sponsoring the facility. Fundraising and donations were funneled through the Oak Grove Boosters Club, designated as the official pass-through vehicle for the project, according to court documents.
The donation of $60,000 to the Oak Grove Booster Club in 2015 was the largest grant Favre 4 Hope made that year. (In 2015, Favre 4 Hope also granted $12,500 to the USM Athletic Foundation). The listed purpose for both grants on Favre 4 Hope tax forms was “education.”
The first phase of the 14,960 square foot volleyball facility at Oak Grove High opened in 2015 and Brett and Deanna’s role in helping make it happen was widely lauded.
“They contacted Mike Rozier, a local builder, and it really grew from there,” Tess Smith, the Lamar County superintendent of education, told the Lamar Times. She added: “I just don’t know if, during my tenure, anyone else will walk in the door and say, ‘We’re going to build a million-dollar building and give it to (the district).’ How often does that happen?”
In 2017, as Breleigh Favre began her college career at USM, Favre began meeting with school officials about building a new volleyball facility there.
According to court filings, Favre eventually connected with Nancy New, a USM alumnus who served on the school’s athletic foundation board from 2014-18, according to tax documents. She also headed up the nonprofit Mississippi Community Education Center, which distributed millions of federal dollars from the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program to local organizations.
Between Nov. 6 and Dec. 5, 2017, New’s nonprofit made two lump-sum payments totaling a combined $5 million to the USM Athletic Foundation, according to the state auditor’s report. That same month, Favre received his first payment – $500,000 – as part of an advertising agreement with the state’s welfare program, Families First, made with the understanding that the funds would go toward the volleyball facility.
“If you were to pay me,” Favre texted New in 2017, according to court documents, “is there anyway (sic) the media can find out where it came from and how much?”
In June 2018, ground broke on the volleyball facility – called “The Wellness Center” – which came with a projected cost of $6 million. That same month, Favre received a second payment from New — $600,000 — as part of the advertising agreement to help fund the project. And after making donations to the USM Athletics Foundation averaging $11,125 the previous four years, Favre’s charity donated $60,000.
Favre was in communication with key officials, according to reporting from Mississippi Today, lobbying New, then-Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant and then-USM President Dr. Rodney Bennett for increased funding and workarounds involving construction costs. Favre even texted Bryant in 2018 suggesting prison labor to help construct lockers for the facility.
By 2019, when Favre 4 Hope donated $46,817 to the USM Athletics Foundation, Favre was also working his contacts at Prevacus, a biotech company in which he was reportedly an early investor, to help advance his construction aim.
“I’ve asked Brett not to do the things he’s doing to seek funding from state agencies and the legislature for the volleyball facility,” Bennett wrote to Bryant in January 2020, according to court filings. “I will see for the ‘umpteenth time’ if we can get him to stand down.
“The bottom line is he personally guaranteed the project, and on his word and handshake we proceeded. It’s time for him to pay up — it really is just that simple.”
“That’s was my thoughts (sic),” Bryant responded. “Maybe he wants the State to pay off his promises. Like all of us I like Brett. He is a legend but he has to understand what a pledge means. I have tried many time(s) to explain that to him.”
A month later, Mississippi state auditor Shad White arrested New and former Mississippi Department of Human Services executive director John Davis, among others, alleging a conspiracy to steal welfare funds. New has pleaded guilty to federal wire fraud charges and to state charges on fraud, bribery and racketeering. Earlier this month, Davis was sentenced to 32 years in state prison after pleading guilty on 20 federal and state charges of conspiracy and fraud.
Favre has talked several times about his foundation and how proud he is of the benefits it has brought others.
“It would be a shame if people who can help don’t help,” he told the AP in 2020. “By no means are we perfect, but we do try to give back.”

The Story of Don Pietro Pappagallo, a martyr for Catholic Social Principles
youtube
The video above discusses many items of this past week, but i want to draw attention to the last story (feel free to move the curser to the last segment, the 27th minute) which shares the amazing story of Fr. Pietro Pappagallo. His cause for beatification is happening now, and John Allen suggests that this martyr could be seen as a Saint of Catholic Social Teaching. I certainly want to know more of his story and found this article that John Allen wrote below which goes into further detail.
In his article John Allen posted a letter from Pappagallo to Monsignor Baldelli who attempted to remove him from the ministry where he was serving the poor and immigrant communities. His response reflects the will of a Saint like Mother Cabrini who will not compromise the social gospel for any political agenda no matter how controversial.
“Monsignor, I see myself in the workers at the boarding house. They come from my land, and they’re immigrants too. The fact that they haven’t gone overseas doesn’t make their situation any less painful or difficult … The work in the factory is dehumanizing. I don’t find it just, and I can’t appease myself with arguments about politics, which don’t interest me at all. I only know that the faith, and a sense of humanity, don’t allow me to ignore my brothers, to whose service I’ve been assigned. If you’re not on their side, I can only say that I’m upset and confused.”
Like Mother Cabrini he was steadfast in his service to the victims of the Italian fascist regime and later to the Nazis. Unlike Mother Cabrini he would become a martyr during a Nazi roundup know as the Ardeatine massacre. I hope and pray that his sacrifice may serve as yet another example of Catholic Social Teaching in Action.
