Macross Bootlegs: Harmony Gold, Tatsunoko, Studio Nue, & Big West Still Leaving Money on the Table

Context: Back in 2012 there was a Super Dimension Fortress Macross 30th Anniversary blu-ray box set released in Japan with some various inclusions relative only to the OG series. There have been blu-ray box sets released for Macross Plus and Macross II OVA series in Japan over the past 10 years as well. Nothing from Macross is released outside of Japan anymore.

Image below is a sceenshot from a listing on eBay that I found while looking for other Macross stuff (legit second hand items), and I recognized the art from the 2012 30th Anniversary release. Title reads: “Macross 30th Super Dimension Fortress Bluray Box 1-36 + Movie & OVA English Dub!”

Obvious Bootleg is Obvious.

I’m in an online retro anime group that has some industry people who worked on the 1999-ish US DVD releases of Macross II and Macross Plus in it, and whenever the subject has come up, they’ve said that it’s not just Harmony Gold that’s complicated further releases, but music rights make it a problem, and hypothetically, if a company wanted to license a release they just have to contact all the companies involved and be willing to fork over a ton of money. I know better than to get into with people who’ve done that work before. I only mention it because I think it’s interesting, and am not interested in a debate over it.

I also don’t really care either way because no matter what, everyone involved is leaving money on the table. And with this bootleg ‘set’, we can see that it’s not hard to cobble together all the various Japanese BD releases (presumably) and slap some dub and sub tracks on them and sell for $100 or so. I have the software to make the merges and was considering doing this for my own personal use (e.g. merging a fansub track to DYRL). However, doing it RIGHT takes a lot of work (unless one is a pro at it, then maybe they’ve got the method down). I’m curious as to the quality of the timing for dub and subs in this bootleg. From what I read, it sounds a bit tedious.

Based on the eBay listing, it seems like this bootleg uses a combination of:

Official English sub tracks from old DVD set for SDF Macross (the only time there was a US release if I recall correctly)

Official English dubs from old DVD or VHS releases for Macross Plus and Macross II

Official English sub tracks from old DVD or VHS releases for Macross Plus and Macross II

Official English subs from Macross II OVA series which would have had to been manually created from the VHS release to create a track file as the series was never released on DVD in the US

Either fansubs or specially created English subs from a bootleg hub for the Macross Flash Back 2012 Special

Either fansubs or specially created English subs from a bootleg hub for the Do You Remember Love? film (DYRL)

Mystery English Dub for DYRL film

Mystery English dub or English dub from Robotech for the SDF Macross dub

Where the hell is there an English dub for DYRL?

Are they talking about the Clash of the Bionoids hack job from the 80s? Did they get the audio from the VHS release? There was a UK English dub that was theater only, which seems even more impossible to get a decent audio track out of.

Did they use the Robotech English for the SDF Macross dub?

At various times throughout, the script for Robotech does not match up with the SDF Macross story. So I’m a little puzzled by that one too.

The seller has positive feedback, so whatever bootlegs they regularly sell must not be awful. It’s kind of bizarre, but sounds laughably awesome so my curiosity quandary is: “Do I blow $99 to see how bad this could possibly be?”

At the very least, I’d finally have a playable disc of the Macross II OVA series with English subs (even if badly timed and done). I don’t have patience for hunting down safe torrents. The US DVD release was only for the “movie” version that cut down the content.

For what it’s worth, I have no problem with the idea of purchasing bootlegs of out-of-print media, especially if never released in the U.S. Not even sorry.

For example, SDF Macross: Do You Remember Love? BD is still available new from Japanese retailers, while Macross Plus and Macross II BD sets are sold out. Paying $300 for used copies of Macross Plus and Macross II doesn’t put money in the pocket of IP holders or studios involved. I paid a lot of money (thanks shipping costs) to legit import the DYRL film and don’t regret it. I have no problem supporting official Japanese-only releases when they exist, and are not out-of-print and over-priced on the collector’s market.

That said, I’ve never bought a bootleg because I’ve always assumed that the quality is bad, and I may as well just buy directly from a fansub group (back when fansub VHS was a Thing). Since the 2000s, I’d just download a fansubbed version. I don’t really have time to watch a lot of anime anymore, so with all the anime available via streaming (which I pay subscription for), I don’t really need to go looking for fansubs or pirated torrents of anything.

Except for Macross, b/c the IP holders would rather leave money on the table than court a distributor to produce new subs or dubs for release outside of Japan. For real this is pathetic yet comical.

My name is Fae-Jinni and I will be your guide through this Zine about the Bisexual community.

So, what is Bisexuality?

Bisexuality is the romantic or sexual attraction toward both males and females. It’s one of the three main classification of sexual orientation along with heterosexuality and homosexuality.

The term bisexuality, hetero- and homosexuality, were all coined in the 19th century.

While it’s true that being bisexual, meaning you're attracted to both sexes, these attractions are not always equal to each other.

To help explain this, below I have put the Kinsey Scale and the Purple-Red Scale of Attraction.

The Kinsey scale, also called the Heterosexual–Homosexual Rating Scale, is used to describe a person’s sexual orientation. It was created by the sexologist Alfred Kinsey in 1948. (Picture of Kinsey)

It is a scale that goes from 0, meaning exclusively heterosexual, to 6, meaning exclusively homosexual. (Picture of Kinsey Scale)

In 2016, Langdon Parks created a new scale after learning that he was asexual but still attracted to women. This new scale allows the user to label how they experience that attraction on a scale of A to F. A represents asexuality, while F represents hypersexuality. The point I’m trying to make is that everyone has a different experiences of being bi as there are different levels of being bi. I myself am a 2 on the Kinsey scale and a D2 on the Red and Purple Scale as I personally seem to fancy men more but I have always found women attractive.

You know, at this point I was going to give examples of animals that have shown bisexual behaviour in nature however when I typed into Google ‘bisexually animals’ this is what came up… (screenshot)

A few links about the definition of 'bisexually'. Animals that have both sex organs and animals that reproduce bisexually. But nothing about animals showing bisexual behaviour.

And this isn't because it doesn't exist! When I typed in ‘homosexual animals’, google can't seem it get enough of it. (screenshot)

If there are animals that have shown they're gay by fucking the same gender, then there are going to be animals who have fucked both genders. (draw a animal or something)

Which means! = Bisexual! (Draw funny picture of a lion or something fucking both sexes and it = bi)

So, this segues nicely into my next topic, bi-erasure.

There is this lovely little thing called ‘bisexual erasure’ or ‘bisexual invisibility’. At best, it’s the tendency for people, media or shows to ignore, remove or just not acknowledge bisexuality. At worst, it’s blatant biphobia.

· Your sexuality isn't real

· You're just confused

· So you’re straight

· You’re invading queer space

· So you’re gay then

· Want to have a threesome with me and my boyfriend/girlfriend/friend

· You're greedy

· Promiscuous

· How do you know you're bi if you've never been with someone of the same sex?

· You're not bi enough

· You're not a real bisexual

· You're half gay and half straight!

· I can't date you because you've been with guys.

· You won't stay faithful and hop onto the next straight man you see.

For some examples, let’s look at some TV shows!

Friends!

Prior to the start of the series, Ross’s wife Carol came out as lesbian after being married to him for several years and then married Susan their lover. This isn’t particularly unusual in the not so gay-friendly early ‘90s context. However, it’s made clear that she and Ross still enjoyed a sexual relationship together still even after she got involved with Susan. Ross even brings up how they had "some good times before she became a lesbian...and a few afterwards, as well," and Ross’ and Carol’s son was even conceived at three months after she admitted to seeing Susan. Carol however, is only ever referred exclusively as gay, bisexuality is never brought up.

Glee!

In the TV show Glee, there are two female high school students that appeared to be bisexual, Brittany and Santana. Santana is referred to as a lesbian character despite previously having two ex-boyfriends while Britany identified herself as ‘fluid’ and ‘bi-curiou’.

Blaine is a gay exchange student who becomes confused with is orientation in one episode and is convinced he's bisexual. His friend Kurt dismissed his confused saying that gay teenagers called themselves bi "when they want to hold hands with [the opposite sex] and feel normal for a change" Blaine calls it out as a double-standard. Despite all this, Blaine turns out 100% gay at the end of the episode. Ryan Murphy, one of the show’s creators of the show, defended his decision by saying that the ‘kids need to know he’s one of them’.

Apparently, us bi kids out there don’t need that kind of support!

How about we look at how the media treats celebrities that are bisexual

Examples from real life aren’t much better.

Freddie Mercury is considered one of the most famous gay icons. Did you know he was Bi? Freddie was openly bisexual, had relationships with both men and women and never formally came out as gay.

Then we get people like Boy George, someone from ‘our’ own community going on a biphobic twitter rant.

Until bisexuals stop being the unmentionables of the LGBTQIA community we will continue to be the punching bags of both gay and straight, with respite nowhere to be found.

You’d think that being bi would be great, you’ve basically doubled your dating options and if you’re family doesn’t like it, just pretend to be straight right?

Wrong!

Being bi is normal, animals and shit. Give a history lesson, talk about famous people who are bi for something.

There’s a nifty little scale created by Alfred Kinsey around 1948 called Kinsey scale.

Which was later expanded upon by a Southern California dude named Langdon Parks (improvised drawing of Park dude as I don’t know what he looks like) who created the Purple and Red Scale of Attractions!

It was weird for me growing up as I always thought that everyone was also attracted to everyone else.

One women I spoke to said that because she was in a relationship with a women at the moment, she finds women more attractive and that when she’s dating men, she more attracted to men.

I’ve spoken to some bisexual who say they are more attracted to the sex there current partner is.

A nice metaphor for this is liking both tea and coffee. Coffee is men, Tea is women. Some people prefer Tea but coffee is also fine. Some people like coffee and tea equally. Some people’s prefers can change temporarily and others permanently.

It’s like someone liking both Coffee and Tea (I happen to be a hot chocolate person myself but that’s beside the point).

That’s a simple version of it but being bisexual is a little more complicated.

To help demonstrate what I’m talking about, I present that Kinsey Scale and Purple-Red Scale of Attraction.

It’s really not as simple as that. If you’re a girl coming out as bi, you’re just doing it for attention.

If you’re a boy, you’re secretly gay and are just afraid to ‘come out’ fully.

Bisexuals are called greedy, promiscuous and carrier STDs. They’re untrustworthy and traitors but they’re good for threesomes.

It doesn’t help that on top of that, the treatment we get from that Gay and Lesbian community is just as bad as well.

Some people describe bisexuals as being half-straight and half-gay, this is wrong and thinking this ways leads to segregation from both the straight and gay community. Being bisexual is being 100% bisexual, not half anything.

To avoid further spoilers I watched GoT s7ep6...

Ok this all probably doesn’t make sense, if I have time I’ll write up one of my analysis’, this is more like a brain fart I just had to write up, so if you do end up wasting your time reading this, apologies if there’s spelling mistakes, it’s currently 1Am and like I said, it’s a brain fart. I’ve done these before but I just keep them to my self because in the end they technically are for me lol. I won’t tag this as spoilers because you don’t have to ‘Keep reading’ if you haven’t seen the ep yet. Honestly? If you don’t want to get spoiled because people don’t tag stuff just say off the internet or watch the episode lol.

Ok well this season has really been ruined for me but hey at least everything in this episode was a surprise except for a few sceenshots of Dany’s winter dress WHICH OML I DIED WHEN I SAW IT BECAUSE WAS IT ME OR DID SHE LOOK LIKE AN ANGEL?? I’m going to admit I did say Thoros was probably going to die but I was 100% sure Tormund was going to, so I had a hand over my mouth throughout the whole episode; I’m extremely relieved he’s not dead yet...even when there were like 4 death flags just in this episode, like when the hound said ‘How are you not dead yet’ I kid you not, I was on the brink of tears. Moving on...

I love the Hound and the absolute no fucks he gives but that’s old news; and ofc it was really nice to see him save Tormund, nice character development. Honestly I can’t wait to see the episode in HD because it was pretty fucking intense in general. And yea, RIP Thoros :/ As long as my boy Tormund is safe for now I’m ok

About the Arya and Sansa scenes...Honestly? I’m confused and kind of annoyed? Ok I love everything about GoT so like I don’t even mean this tbh because no matter what happens I’ll praise it forever, but let me be a critic for a sec

Honestly the Winterfell scenes have been quite boring idk, nothing’s been happening? like I know Sansa and Arya used to fight but srsly?? Arya’s my fav stark, she’s always been but why is she acting so bitchy?? I find it pointless rn because we all know the enemy there is Littlefinger and I’d rather have more scenes of him plotting and being the ol’ Petyr in the earlier seasons rather than see the stark sisters act this way, because I know damn well it’s going to end with both of them offing Littlefinger, heck it might even happen next episode idk. (I am contradicting myself here because ik littlefinger left that letter there on purpose to set Arya and Sansa agains eachother but IDK I JUST FELT LIKE SAYING IT, BRAIN FART REMEMBER?)

What else...

Tyrion’s speeches I always love and I’ll mention it again, DANY’S FUCKING WINTER DRESS HAD ME FALLING OFF THE CHAIR BECAUSE OMG IT WAS GORGEOUS.

And I guess this brings us to Dany to the rescue scene.

Well like I said before, I’ll love GoT no matter what, and the main issue I’m having this season (which is the issue ik most people are having) is that it’s sooo rushed! now the reason it’s a problem for me is because we just have 1 episode of season 7 left and then season 8. I’ve even stopped caring about issues other people are having like, Jonaerys being rushed or forced, because I wan’t to love GoT anyway. And you know what? Fuck it. I ship it too, I used to crack ship it ages ago and yea, they’re related, that’s where I started having issues with it but 1. They don’t know yet and 2. they’re Targs and incest was normal for targs. And no, I don’t ship incest, but you know what? It’s obviously going to happen, like did you see the end of this ep? So I’ve just decided I’ll be happy about it rather than not. Now I’d like it even more if it wasn’t so rushed, but I have faith in grrm to see how differently everything will turn out to be in the books.

Well I’ll be honest, I expected one of the dragons to become a white, if not both Viseryon and Raeghal which is still a possibility but it didn’t stop me from screaming at my screen when it did.
