LAST THING I RESEARCHED: Spoilery dnd lore stuff bc I’m working on the campaign I DM again! On the more dry side (for anyone whos not me) researching western (north american) trends regarding buddhist beliefs, specifically what converts tend to more readily accept vs what our socialization in a christian-centric society makes some of us still balk at. Reincarnation being “legit” or not is one of the big ones I’ve seen pop up which has been interesting since I personally do believe in it.

for the unpopular opinion: xue yang really did consider jgy his friend (for a given value etc)

oh, absolutely! @paradife-loft wrote a great opinion post about this a little bit ago (here it is!) and I think...yeah, their relationship was definitely complicated and I think Xue Yang would’ve been willing to kill Jin Guangyao pretty quick if he felt like it was necessary for his own survival, and had I also think at the back of his head that probably eventually Jin Guangyao would try to kill him and maybe he should get around to doing that first-

but I still think that if you asked him he’d consider Jin Guangyao a friend. or, well, he’d probably laugh if you asked him “is he your friend” but that wouldn’t keep him from being like “sure! my best friend :D” and then being absolutely insufferable about it later to Jin Guangyao.

for Xue Yang the whole “you might kill me in the future! or I might kill you!” is not necessarily going to get in the way of genuinely liking someone and enjoying their company, particularly when that’s sort of...part of the recognized dynamic from the get-go. like: we’ve established this as a condition of our relationship! now we can move on until it becomes relevant.

this is not something I think Jin Guangyao really gets.

Xue Yang definitely genuinely likes him, though. and enjoys being around him, even as much as he also enjoys fucking with him. the two are not mutually exclusive! it’s entirely possible that Jin Guangyao is the closest thing he’s ever had to a friend, up to that point in his life. even if, yeah, on some level he’s like “I am only here as long as you find me useful but that’s okay /shrug emoji”

(Xue Yang has definitely never had a relationship with someone that doesn’t on some level have a component where it’s reliant on his usefulness. that’s just a given and how relationships work.)

which...he’s not exactly wrong about, but I think Jin Guangyao has a certain fondness for Xue Yang too. sometimes that fondness is I think a little like what you might feel for a particularly mischievous cat, but sometimes it is just...a relief that his relationship with Xue Yang gives him some things he doesn’t, and can’t, get from anyone else.

Dying alone or being forgotten. She doesn’t want to die at all, but so much of herself and her end goals hinges on the idea that she doesn’t want to be a faceless person left in the streets or some sad girl unclaimed in a morgue. She’d never considered whether or not she’d be worthy to have a funeral or a niche, but knowing there’s that chance makes her go through one heck of an existential crisis. And for someone who has managed to have almost No Friends, the idea of being alone scares the shit out of her, especially if it was during that final moment.

personality. 15 - what is their biggest weakness?

Self-destruction? Self-sacrificial? Both?? It works in her benefit sometimes because hell yeah get ‘em, but she's the sort that won't just lower her head and lay low even if it’s in her best interest. She'll keep onwards until she's broken and bloody and knocking at death's door, usually to the dismay of loved ones who don't want that fate for her even if she's doing it for them.
