It's very interesting to contrast Kan and Akk as well as Thua and Ayan because they play similar roles in their relationships but with very different bases.
Tumblr media
Kan is not having a sexuality crisis in the same way Akk is. Kan knows he's gay. Kan knows that he's attracted to boys and, very specifically, that he is attracted to Thua. He knows that and he is torn between self-hatred, social discomfort and a desperate yearning for what could be if he just gave in.
Tumblr media
Akk is having a sexuality crisis and a morality crisis and an education crisis and a personal crisis and just... how many crisis can one teenager have? We're gonna find out. He's struggling with his own thoughts, with figuring out what he's feeling at all and with the very concept of what is going on in his life. He doesn't understand how he feels about Ayan and he's still in the middle of discovering himself.
Tumblr media
Thua knows he's gay as well. He knows he likes Kan. He even knows that Kan is protecting him and, I suspect, he knows that Kan likes him back. He's the most honest of the characters, the most comfortable in his skin. He is not in any kind of crisis nor denial. He's just trying to be the best student he can be, a good friend and to keep the people he cares about safe.
Tumblr media
Ayan is in a very different kind of crisis. His pain is coming from an outside trauma. He's comfortable with his sexuality enough to use it to his advantage and he's smart enough to understand how to use his knowledge and his understanding of people to help himself. But he's still in a deeper crisis, one of pain and revenge and loneliness and isolation. Because for all that he's doing all of this, for all the flirting and the closeness, he's shared nothing of himself with anyone and he won't for some time. No one at Suppalo knows him.
There are so many stories here, stories about repression and loneliness and isolation and acceptance and fear and rules and history and change.

My first-ever dalliance with an Our Skyy property (I didn’t watch Never Let Me Go or Star In My Mind)! Some thoughts on Our Skyy 2: The Eclipse, episode 1:
First off, The Eclipse was my first GMMTV BL ever ever ever, which I watched after finishing KinnPorsche. I literally had no idea who anyone was, from the actors to Golf, no one. Going in super-DUPER fresh, I generally loved the script, and COMPLETELY loved the direction and cinematography. I loved that the storyline relied on emotional heat up until it made sense to introduce physical heat. I had my criticisms about how the Thua storyline played out -- I did not realize this until @bengiyo shared with me that two episodes had been cut from the original series order, which helps me to understand that whole debacle a lot better in hindsight.
I loved the show a lot, and already have a ton of nostalgia for it, and I’m excited that my old Thai BLs watchlist will give me more by way of First, especially in Not Me (and besides BLs.... yes, I’m still very much considering watching The Shipper for all the other simpy darlings in it) (cough cough Ohm cough Jennie cough).
ANYWAY, I’m seeing on the internet a lot of consternation for this first episode, but I thought it was FABULOUS.
I want to see people in relationships dealing with shit! Like grown-up humans! Yes, the boys are young -- dang, they’re just graduating high school! They’re young adults, like YOUNG, and figuring out their shit. (Isn’t it... SCREAMINGLY obvious that Aye is keeping the birthday secret from Akk?) (I always thought of Akk as a slightly over-serious weenie, and look -- First plays that up SO WELL.) (And Ayan knows this and is messing with Akk, and so what?) (Because boyfriends are going to learn how to balance each other out, and that’s exactly what’s happening here!)
I blog about trauma and messes all the time, because trauma and messes are really real in the real world. Surely I look to dramas to show me alternate realities of happy fluff and happy endings, but, as I always write here: the thing that really gets me in particular about Thai dramas is the Thai filmmaking penchant to NOT look away from the messy, gory, emotional details of relationships needing to be ironed out. It’s truly beautiful art to me when a writer or director can get into that without shying away from it.
I reblogged this fantastic post from @justafriend-ql this morning with an incredible insight: the guys from Suppalo dealt with a tremendous amount of emotional trauma, and dare I say, even brainwashing to an extent while they were in school. They need to figure their shit out. Whether you’re in a relationship or not -- after an experience like that, you need to spend time sorting shit out regarding how you treat yourself and others.
Which is EXACTLY WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH THIS EPISODE.
To me, The Eclipse was not about physical engagement or fluff. It was a very deep exploration into the societal guardrails that these guys were operating behind. I don’t see why that wouldn’t change for Our Skyy.
And I think this balanced out really nicely with all the movie bits, with Neo’s shirtlessness (GAWD DAMN), with Namo being freakin’ hilarious, and with my BELOVED ship of Wat and Sani -- Sani, who looks as slammin’ as ever, who will likely turn down Wat (if I’m reading their movie re-creation correctly), and Wat who respectfully crushes on her (I love them I love them, and if Sani decides otherwise, I support her go-gurl moment, because Wat is also an adult now!).
Anyway. This will obviously resolve tomorrow, and I’m excited for it. I loved this episode. It was sophisticated, heaty, emotional, and complicated. I’m not expecting fluffy and simple here -- I want to see good filmmaking for a two-episode epilogue, and I think we’re getting it so far here.

the eclipse characters as cats
akk: the stalker. perches in high places and haunts your hallways. somehow broke into your locked bathroom and is now staring at you. ayan: maintains eye contact as he slowly pushes the glass off the table despite your increasingly stern "no!"s. afterwards slinks over to smugly rub himself around your ankles. thua: lounges in sun spots with the air of a distinguished gentleman. tolerates being poked and prodded and then disappears god knows where for the rest of the day. kan: rolls over so you can pet his belly but once you do, scratches your hand bloody. has the audacity to look confused about his own actions. wat: 10/10 aces the dangle test. would not survive in the wild but luckily will never have to because you love him more than the actual people in your life.

the way Khan slowly closed the space between him & Thua, in those sleepy twilight hours where time doesn't seem quite real? queerest, most relatable thing I've seen on this show (& that's saying something).
that unique stretch of time, that safe space, somehow heightens your emotions tenfold & makes you braver. it's those nocturnal moments that lay you bare- when your truth, your desire- won't be denied a second longer.
seeing him take that oh-so-familiar plunge to then be met with softness & tenderness? to not shrink away from his desire, but actually lean into it with quiet elation? beautiful.

thua really played himself by testing to see if kan would speak up about his true feelings because kan did exactly that. and now poor thua is grappling with the alarming realization that this means he has to deal with mortifying ordeal of being known and expressing feelings of intimacy.............as a shy introvert. absolutely horrifying anyway sending my fellow soldier thuapu thoughts and prayers tonight

This week's episode of the eclipse was just WOW. I didn't expect that Chadok and Dika were a thing and much less engaged, their story is so sad. I knew Thua was behind of somethings and would do something like he did in today's episode but I really didn't like him outing Akk and Ayan, that was not cool. I could say more but I don't really know how to put it into words.

The eclipse - honesty, purity, understanding
The eclipse caught my eye the first week it aired because it has a certain vibe I just loved but couldn't name. I remember thinking "this show knows exactly what it wants" after the second episode because the overall set-up is a fanfiction and the lines are partly cheesy whilst heavily criticizing an opressive system where rules only overshadow the fact protestors are being harmed. The show doesn't take itself too serious but also doesn't make fun of itself. It's very balanced and the characters are treated with care, everybody matters and has their own role in the plot. There are no unnecessary and nameless roles. This is due to the fact the show follows a mission. There is a story that needs to be told and it's not just about Akk and Ayan developing heart eyes, it's very critical, there is a protest going on and people are not following the ideal and step out of line.
Honesty
The show is very honest about what it wants to portray. It wants to criticize, it wants to tell a love story. And this honesty coming from the characters is what prevents it from crashing down at some point because the characters never betray the audience. There is not gonna be a weird turning point and one of them followed a different plan the whole time. There is no traitor for the drama. No, the characters state their intentions pretty early in the story, thus we know which role each is gonna play in the upcoming fight against the system.
Thua knows the rules don't make sense, he even is a victim of them. The rules of Suppalo protect the bullies and not the victim. The victim can't speak up, so they stay silent. But deep down, Thua wants to fight, just lost his willpower along the way. He is on the side of the protestors but not protesting which makes him tecnically neutral, but as Ayan put it "no better than the other's following the rules".
Kan is afraid to be judged, not just because of his sexuality but also because of his true opinion. That one time the three friends were talking in Akk's room, he implied, the rules don't make sense for him either. But he is too afraid his true self will be judged, so he keeps quiet as well.
Ayan has his personal mission and we know about it the first second we see him. And even though Akk doesn't know the story behind the bond between Ayan and Dika, he knows Ayan is against the rule system. Ayan tells him hundreths of times. He never goes deeper than that, doesn't explain, but his intentions are clearly framed since the start.
And Akk, as I see it, never lied. He was honest this whole time because there is a difference between lying and not telling. Yes, he didn't say he is the one behind the curse but nobody actively asked him about it, so he didn't deny it either. The reveal was shocking, yes, but didn't feel like a betrayal. Akk was always stating his intentions of upholding the system no matter what and no matter if it's right or wrong.
You see, the characters are honest and even if some take longer to open up than others, it all fits with their behavior from before. Akk's explaination makes sense because he always protected the school and students from lashing out.
Purity
This honesty carries a certain purity because even the bad things are talked about. Nothing is left out of the story. The self-doubt, the dark moments, the traumatizing past. It is all dealt with in flashbacks and dialogues and actions.
Kan has to jump across his own shadow but just doesn't know how to. He is lost and Thua thinks Kan doesn't like him but how could Kan not. We see him being very sad about the past and that he just can't bring himself to help Thua. This inner conflict of Kan, coming from his heart, is portrayed in a very pure but painful way. Especially the scene Thua walks away, it hits deep but it is very clear why he does it and why Kan looks after him like a ghost of the past. The feelings are raw but nothing is left out. And even if something is ugly, it can still be pure and so are Kan and Thua.
Akk and Ayan just love to put everything out there. Like their scenes are sometimes so heavy, the rawness just hits me. But those moments are the purest in this show. Ayan crying with his head on Akk's shoulder, them in the gym, Akk crying in Ayan's arms, Ayan having a nightmare. It is raw and pure - just not in the sense of them waving a white flag. The emotions are all over the place, they are there, they talk, they cry, they hug. It's the most honest they can ever be and the most honest they allow themselves to be, so their bond is very important to each other and it's pure since nobody lies.
Understanding
As I have begun to talk about the scene at the bonfire, let me just say, I got goosebumbs right there. Ayan's reaction surprised me a lot and it made this scene even more hurting. Despite Akk confessing he was ready to risk student's lives, Ayan only says once "what you did was a crime" but then switches to "could you take responsibility" which holds so much more power than he ever wanted. Those words are heavy and it leads Akk to confessing all the feelings he has inside. The inner conflict is visible and Ayan understands it. I doubt he really 100% does but he tries so hard to support Akk, it's lovely. "You're allowed to be weak. At least with me" this is another turning point. And that is what I mean, the characters try very hard to understand each other's perspective. They ask questions that make them doubt themselves and make sure the other knows it's a safe space.
Kan tells Thua he is there for him, after realizing how much Thua struggles. He understands his actions now and why he says what he says about Kan. Kan can reminisce now and make it better. Understanding another person makes them understand themselves better. It's what happens with Akk and Ayan as well. It was Ayan's turn to understand Akk but then it was the other way around when Ayan had a nightmare.
Conclusion
The show just cares a lot and that makes it all so lovely.
