lando norris x reader

summary: you can’t believe your eyes, and lando can’t believe his ears

warnings: none, fluff, lando being lando

a/n: this is chaos and idk what i was doing with this 😭

Every now and then someone tagged you in a link on twitter and every so often your curiosity peaked and you indulged in whatever the fan had tagged you in. Most recently, you’d been loving the fan fiction links being sent your way, especially if they were written about your boyfriend Lando.

“Lan I cannot believe you right now.”

Now that tone of voice had Lando freezing from his spot in the bathroom, cleaning up his facial hair a little before he took off for Bahrain.

“Um…i’m sorry?”

“I just I can’t even look at you!”

Lando was quick to rinse his face off before walking over towards you and sitting in front of you. His eyes a little bit worried as he stared at you.

“What? I took the trash out, i cleaned up my facial hair out of the sink…there’s no socks on the floor!”

It was only a few seconds later that you sighed dramatically

“Well in this little story here apparently you dnf’d a race for the reader…you never do that for me!”

Lando looked at you like you grew four heads, his jaw dropping open as it clicked to him that once again you were reading fan fiction about him.

“Oh jesus christ-woman give me that!”

Finally letting yourself laugh you passed your phone to him and watched as his eyes scanned the writing, before he shook his head.

“Yeah because i’m giving up leading a race to dnf because my so called “girlfriend” is missing, mhm yeah because that makes sense”

“You wouldn’t even dnf for me?!”

Your laughter never ceased as he looked at you with almost a disgust, the idea not even fathomable for him, and even you knew it was so stupid.

“Baby, I love you, but I wouldn’t even dnf for my nan…and I love my nan a lot..”

You nodded shrugging as he passed your phone back, shutting it off you sat forward to kiss his forehead, easing the wrinkles that remained from his sheer distaste for what he just read.

“You heard it here folks, Lando Norris wouldn’t even dnf for love!”

“Okay that’s it”

There wasn’t much room to say anything because Lando had you pinned underneath him against the mattress as you laughed once again, a smirk on his face as he stared down at you.

“Here’s a deal, if i’m ever dead last in a shit car, i’ll dnf for you”

“So never?”

“Exactly”

Watching you carefully you shrugged

“I’ll take what I can get”

Happy with your response he leaned down to connect your lips together, the fanfic long gone out of your minds as you held one another tightly, Lando’s kisses always working to have you melt into a puddle. When you both pulled away you smiled admiring his face a little more than usual knowing you’d be without one another for a week until you went out to meet him at the first grand prix.

Max had to deal with the insane child that was Charles all throughout karting. And Max loved karting and dreamed of F1 because if the competition in karting was like that, F1 must be even better!

But then he goes to F1 and realizes everyone treats him like a kid and there isn't a deranged monégasque boy trying to send them both into the barriers and he realizes F1 is not the same.

Three years later Charles joins F1 and Max is grateful he has his rival and equal back and now all he wants to do is hang around him all the time because Charles is the only one who understands the kind of competition they once had.

Max is chatting to him all the time like "I missed you, you don't know what it was like before you came along" and Charles is like, "I missed this too, you don't know how slow those F2 guys were."

i meaan, charles and max are the same age group so when max started in f1 as a 17 yo (jesus christ, child labour really), he was the youngest and because most believed his seat was not deserved (he skipped f2 and did not do the classic feeder series lineup like charles did), he did not really get the same treatment as, let's say, ollie who just became the youngest ferrari driver at the age of 18.

so even if charles seemed like a true menace that just made max's life incredibly difficult (caused them to dnf, they had to get together the "fairplay talk", or even the infamous story of max being left at the gas station by his dad includes charles in a way -- max made a mistake in the race and charles ended up winning). so truly, their karting years were more linked together than many assume.

so it's natural that when he was not met with open arms by other drivers, he was just waiting on charles to make the jump to f1 (and as we found out, that man was SURE charles would make it)

meanwhile you have mr. leclerc who had the biggest amount of doping tests because no one could believe he was That good in f2.

so yeah, then max got other drivers his age in f1 and he became more comfortable as he was no longer the singled out "child" of the grid that no one took seriously. but overall, max seems to believe only charles can match up to his level and be an equal rival so at the end of the day, he got over charles' peak evil years as a child lol

𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐲 ⁀➷ Max’s bad mood is at it’s peak and you’re more than fed up with it. It just gets worse when he crashes with Charles in the race and loses his temper once again, but maybe that’s exactly what the two of you needed to confess what’s long overdue.

𝐰𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠𝐬 ⁀➷ best friends to lovers, mentions of breakup, kinda pining on both sides, swearing, max dnf-ing, you’re allowed to go where he crashed, they already act like a couple let’s be honest

𝐚/𝐧 ⁀➷ yep so this is an old one, I wrote this shortly after max and his ex broke up. This should in no way be disrespectful towards their past relationship nor anything else! remember this is fiction loves x (tell me if I missed a warning please x) This is kind of an experiment because my posts on my side blog @earthfairytale won‘t show up in tags or search 😭 You can‘t even find the blog itself anymore, if anyone knows how to fix this, please send help!

𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐝 "You can't just lose your temper like this, every time you get a bit upset!" could I have this with Max pls? 🥰

It's been a crazy day and it wasn't even eight o'clock yet. From the minute you woke up to the car ride to the track, it's just been pure stress, thanks to Max. He was acting like a six-year-old since Dilara broke up with him.

She's always been nice whenever you met her, but there was this look on her face when you were around with his family or him. You didn't notice it, you were just getting along with his family as if it was your own and they treated you like that, so you never noticed any negative feelings.

But let's start at the beginning. You are Max Verstappen's best friend. You two knew each other since you were about 5 years old. Your Dad owned a kart track and you loved to accompany him there. The smell, the atmosphere, you loved just everything about it. Once in a while, you drove there yourself but you enjoyed watching all the different people just as much.

One day this boy with his Dad entered the track. You stood beside your Dad as they did, and as Jos saw your Dad they hugged and immediately talked about 'the good old times'. Apparently, this was one of your Dad’s old friends he sometimes talked about. You and the little boy stood there and just smiled at each other, your Dads already deep in conversation.

You stuck your hand out to introduce yourself. "Hi, I'm Y/N." you said.

"I'm Max." he smiled and shook your hand.

That was the day you two became best friends and an inseparable and unbeatable team. You got to know him as no one else did. And he got to know you like no one else.

You are Max's resting place. When he is with you he can still be a little short-tempered but you always get him to calm down. You usually manage it just by being by his side or talking to him. There was something about you that just calmed him.

Ever since then, you went to every race Max had. You were his anchor when he got angry and when he got sad. You were there in his highs and lows. As he started with Formula One, you were unbelievably proud of him. The day he told you that the team he was joining said you could come to the races with him was one of the best days of your life.

Of course, you always accompanied him before but Formula One was another level, so you were over the moon when you realised you could travel the world with him and didn't have to let Max go. His team liked you a lot, they even got you your own team gear for the second season you spend with them in Formula One.

But days like this robbed you of your nerves. Max was constantly complaining about everything. He was very emotional none the less, which wasn't a bad thing for you. But since his girlfriend broke up with him it became worse, to a point where you really didn't want to be in the same room as him.

The worst thing? He didn't even tell you why she broke up with him. He hasn't talked to you as much as before, which you could partially understand but you just knew that it wasn't the normal heartbreak-moody thing. He had something else on his mind.

You were reasonable enough to give him his space, but at some point, you had enough. You only talked to him as much as you had to and every time he was getting in his car and put on his helmet you were glad to have some time off. Just like now.

Max bend down, you stood in front of him and kissed his helmet for good luck. No matter what happened or will ever happen between you, this was your ritual, a lucky charm.

The race didn't start long ago, 46 laps were still to go. You were sitting in Max’s garage along with his team, watching the race. Just as you calmed down a bit, everyone stood up from their chairs and tussled their hair. Charles crashed with Max and they both had obvious DNFs. You knew Max was alright when he spoke to his race engineer but his voice sounded angry.

Great. You could literally feel the rage rising in Max.

"Oh god, please, no." you mumbled. Some of Max mechanics turned to you and shook their heads in pity. Not only for Max but for you too as they knew exactly how he was.

You waited for him to get out of the car and walk his way over to the garage. The accident didn't happen so far away so he was able to walk back. But as he got out of his demolished car, it didn't seem like he planned on going anywhere. He kicked one of his tires and angrily turned to Charles, who got out of his car. Max took off his helmet and walked to him. You knew he wouldn't be able to hold himself back, so if this day shouldn't end with a fight, someone would have to interrupt this now.

"Oh heck no, not today Max." You said and stood up from your chair. "What are you doing Y/N?" Lee, Max number one mechanic, called after you. "Stopping this god damn idiot from doing something stupid!" you shouted as you started to ran towards the accident.

"Max!" you shouted angrily. He turned around, surprised. You walked up to him and Charles, boiling with rage now.

"Go away, Y/N. This is none of your business."

"Excuse me?" you calmly said. This was it. You grabbed Max’s wrist and walked away from Charles. You could talk to him later.

The safety car was out so the race was pretty boring. What you didn't know was, that the tv cameras were now completely focused on the two of you.

You still had Max wrist in a firm grip as you walked back to the garage. But he didn't do anything. Max knew exactly what it meant when you answered him calmly and not angry.

"Listen, I-" he started to explain himself but you cut him off. You almost had reached the garage but you didn't go in. You stopped and looked at him, letting go of his wrist.

"No. What is wrong Max?! You can't just lose your temper like this, every time you get a bit upset!" you asked him, shaking your head in disbelieve.

"I get that you are sad, but you can't kick your tire and start a freaking fight with Charles! Do you think he did this on purpose? What is your problem Max, I really don't get it!" you gestured with your hands, showing your despair.

You were both still standing in front of the garage and neither of you had even the thought of going back to the hospitality. You had to talk it out with him here and now. Even though everyone could listen to you, you didn't care. It was as if you and Max were alone there in front of the garage.

"Do you know why she broke up with me, Y/N?" Max asked.

You just shrugged your shoulders, what should this have to do with right now? Max took a deep breath, his voice not as loud this time when he said, "Because I love you."

It hit you like a shotgun shot to the heart. But not because it was something bad, exactly the opposite was the case.

"What?" you whispered in disbelief.

"I love you. And Dilara knew, that's why she broke up with me."

Missing Home

Charles Leclerc x Fem!Reader

short summary- Charles has to leave you and your two-year-old daughter for over a month to race. he struggles with being gone a lot more than he expected too.

Charles was in the middle of the peak of his career when the two of you found out that you were expecting little Juliette. You both had always talked about having children together, but never this soon. The idea honestly scared you. You knew that you'd be home alone with her most of the time while Charles was away battling for championships.

When Juliette was born, you were all alone in the delivery room. Charles didn’t even know that you had gone into labor as Juliette had decided to make her grand entrance during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix like the true mini Ferrari fan she was. Charles ended up winning that race which prolonged him finding out about the birth of their daughter even more. He was absolutely devastated that he wasn’t there for the birth. You were too in all honesty, but you couldn’t control it and you couldn’t go back in time to change it, so the two of you got over it quickly.

The first year of her life was hard. Charles was away most weekends to race. He missed out on a lot of milestones- which he still beats himself up for to this day. Juliette wasn't exactly an easy baby either. She cried a lot and didn’t sleep much which made it nearly impossible to do anything.

Juliette was two years old now. She had brown curly hair and hazel eyes just like her papa, but she was shy and quiet just like her maman. She really was the perfect combination of the two of you. She loved everything about racing. Whenever F1 was on the TV, Juliette would sit and watch it, not looking away from the screen once. She would point at the TV and say papa everytime she saw Charles’ car on the screen. It was the cutest thing ever.

Despite having such a fascination for racing, Juliette had never gone to the track. You and Charles had a long conversation at the beginning of the season about whether or not you felt like Juliette was ready to go to the track. The two of you agreed that she was still a little bit too young to attend a grand prix weekend with how chaotic they can be. You knew how hard of a decision this was for Charles to make as he hated leaving the two of you, hell you hated him leaving, but you both were just trying to do what was best for Juliette.

Charles was having a brilliant season. It was the last race weekend of the year and he was going into it leading the championship by only 4 points. However he had really been struggling mentally the past couple of races. Charles hadn’t been home in a little over a month since he left for the USGP in late October, and he hated every minute of it. With the calendar having a triple header for the US, Mexico, and Brazil and then a double header for Jeddah and Abu Dhabi, Charles hadn’t had time to come home and visit in between races like he always did. It absolutely broke his heart.

Charles would call every night and talk to you and Juliette, no matter what time it was wherever he was in the world. He would tell you how much he missed you and how pissed he was that he couldn’t come home and hug you both. You knew he was hardly sleeping, you could tell by the way he looked on TV and the way he sounded on the phone. You had never seen your Fiance so distraught.

Especially this past Sunday.

The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix was a rough one for Charles. With it being the first time F1 had ever raced on the track, it was a tricky one for everyone to navigate, which meant lots of car failures, crashes, and DNFs. Charles was leading the entire race until he clipped a curb with ten laps to go and hit the wall, ending his day on a bad note.

When he had gotten on the plane, Charles called you in tears.

“This isn’t fair, mon amour. I should be flying home to you and Juliette right now, not flying to another god damn race track. I’m exhausted and I just want a hug from my girls.”

At that point you had tears in your eyes. You and Juliette missed him too and after seeing him crash today, all you wanted to do was give him a hug and tell him that everything was going to be ok. “I know, baby. I know. But it's almost over, ok? You've only got one more race and then you get to be home with us for 3 months ok?”

Charles wiped his tears away and sighed. “I’m sorry, I'm being such a cry baby, this is embarrassing.”

“Never apologize for how you feel my love. This is a hard time for all of us, we are all trying to navigate through it. Next year will be different. Juliette and I will be able to tag along next year. You just have to make it through this final race of the season, ok?”

Charles sighed and nodded. “ ok, mon amour… is Juliette still awake? I wanna talk to her if she is…”

You smiled and walked over to your daughter who was watching a movie on the couch. "Chérie, papa est au telephone” (sweetie, papa is on the phone) You said as you sat down beside her, holding the phone out for her.

Juliettes face lit up as she took the phone and held it up to her ear. “Papa!!”

You laughed and took her pacifier out of her mouth so Charles could better understand her.

“Salut ma chérie. Tu me manques a papa” (hi sweetie, papa misses you)

Juliette frowned and cuddled up to you “miss papa…” she said sadly as she looked up at you with tears in her eyes.

That was all it took for you to decide that you and Juliette were going to fly out to Abu Dhabi. You knew it was going to be stressful, but you also knew that you wanted to be there with Charles if he did win his first championship that weekend.

You had called Arthur and he agreed to tag along with you that way you wouldn’t have to travel with Juliette alone. You had planned it all out with arthur- fly out on Saturday, surprise Charles on Sunday.

It was now Saturday and you were sitting on the plane with Juliette on your lap and Arthur sitting across from you. You were quite nervous to be traveling with Juliette, but thankful that the leclerc family had a private plane for you to use and that Arthur was tagging along.

Juliette cuddled into you as she played with one of the racecars Charles had given her before he left for the US- something she hardly ever let go of these days. You rubbed her back gently and placed a kiss on her temple. “I’m so proud of you for being so good today sweetie, are you excited to go see papa?”

Juliette nodded and rubbed her eyes a little, indicating that she was getting tired.

You laughed a little and rubbed her back gently in hopes of getting her to fall asleep. “Thanks again for being so willing to do this, Arthur. It means a lot, I really appreciate you.”

“Anytime. I know how much he misses you guys, he talked about it all last weekend. I think he really is struggling with it. His last couple of races haven't exactly been the best.”

You nodded and held Juliette close. “I know, that's why I wanted to do this.”

“He is very lucky to have the two of you and let me tell you, he adores the hell out of you both”

You smiled at Arthur's comment. “I know he does”

The plane ride went surprisingly really well. Juliette had pretty much slept the entire time and when she was awake, she was just playing with her race car. When the plane landed, you carried Juliette off of the plane while Arthur grabbed all of the bags.

It was late by the time you had landed -nearly 11pm- so you decided to head straight to the hotel. When you got all checked in and situated inside the hotel room, you laid a sleeping Juliette down in bed and stepped out onto the balcony to give Charles a call.

“Hello mon amour, i’m sorry I didn’t call yet, we had a rough quali session and I just made it back to the hotel”

“No need to apologize, I'm sorry to hear that quali didn’t go well. How did you do? I wasn’t able to watch it, Juliette was having a rough time tonight.”

“I start p3 tomorrow, but Max starts p1 and it's a hard track to overtake on. Tomorrow is going to be rough.”

“It will be tough, but you're tougher. I know you can do it my love.”

“I will try my best mon amour. I should head to bed now though, I have to go to the track at 8am and it's past 11 here now.”

“Ok. try your best to get some good sleep, I know you haven't had much of that lately.”

“I will, my love. Give Juliette a kiss for me ok? I’ll see you both monday morning”

“Will do. I love you, drive safe tomorrow ok?”

“I will. Love you”

THE NEXT DAY

It was around 9am when Arthur came knocking on your door. You picked Juliette up and walked over to the door, opening it and stepping aside so Arthur could come in. “Are you ready to head out? Carlos texted me and told me that Charles is struggling today so I figure the sooner we get there the better.”

You nodded and grabbed your purse. “I agree. Let's get going”

The ride to the track was super short, only about five minutes, which you were super thankful as you were getting more and more eager to see Charles. When Arthur pulled into the track parking lot, you couldn’t help but smile. It had been over 2 years since you were last able to see Charles race in person and you couldn't be more excited.

Arthur grabbed Juliette out of the car before handing her over to you. “You carry the child, I'll carry the bags” he said with a laugh as he grabbed all of your things

Juliette wrapped her little arms around your neck and rested her head on your shoulder. “See papa?”

You placed a gentle kiss on Juliette’s forehead and smiled. “Yeah baby, we are going to go see papa, are you excited?”

Juliette nodded and rubbed her eyes a bit. You knew she was tired. She hadn’t slept much the night before but you knew that once she saw Charles, she would magically find some sort of energy again.

As you walked through the paddock, you were greeted by several familiar faces. They all told you how adorable Juliette was and how gorgeous you looked. It was nice to be in the paddock again. You hadn’t realized how much you missed being here.

When you reached the Ferrari motorhome, you put Juliette down and held her hand tightly. “Reste près de maman, chérie" (stay by mom, sweetie)

Juliette looked up at you and nodded, squeezing your hand tightly.

You walked around, looking for Charles but couldn’t seem to find him anywhere- not in hospitality, not in his driver room, and not on the balcony. You decided to check the garage area next. As you came around the corner to enter the garage, you knelt down to Juliette and pointed in Charles' direction. “Papa is over there sweetie”

Juliette looked over in the direction you were pointing, her face lighting up when she saw Charles standing by his car. She let go of your hand and ran over to charles. “Papa!!!” she yelled as she hugged his leg tightly.

Charles looked down at Juliette and smiled “Ma cherie!!!” he said as he picked Juliette up and hugged her tightly. “Papa missed you so much sweetie…”

Juliette giggled and wrapped her tiny arms around his neck. “Missed you papa!!”

You then decided to walk over to Charles, placing a gentle kiss on his cheek. “Hello, my love”

Charles used his free hand to pull you into a side hug, pressing a kiss to your temple. “I can’t believe you guys are here… what prompted you to surprise me like this?”

You laughed a little and ran a hand through his messy hair. “I know how much you've been struggling with being gone for so long, and to be honest, Juliette and I were too. After you called me on Sunday night, I knew we had to come visit you. Plus I wanted to be here when you win that championship tonight.”

Charles smiled and pulled you into a kiss. “Thank you, mon amour. You have no idea how much this means to me…”

It was now a few hours later and Charles was standing by his car holding Juliette as you stood beside him. Charles had to be out onto the grid in five minutes, which meant he had about 3 and a half minutes to climb into his car.

“Papa has to go race now, Juliette. Are you going to watch me on the TV?”

Juliette cuddled into Charles even more, tears welling in her eyes. “I go with papa”

Charles frowned and rubbed her back gently. “You can’t come with me sweetie, but I won’t be gone for very long, ok? When I get back you can sit in my car, sounds good?”

Juliette nodded a little and gave Charles a kiss.

Charles smiled and hugged Juliette once more before he handed her over to you. “Can I get a good luck kiss at least?”

You laughed and gave him a quick kiss. “Good luck out there, bring us home a championship trophy or you can sleep outside with the wolves when we get home”

Charles just shook his head and laughed at you. “That's mean, you'd never do that to me”

You laughed and hugged him tight. “Drive safe out there, ok? We will be cheering you on from the back of the garage”

“I will. I’ll see you in 58 laps” he said before putting his helmet on and climbing into the car.

You watched as he drove out of the garage before deciding to take a seat towards the back of the garage. You put Juliette’s headphones on her and kissed her cheek. “You look so cute ma cherie!!”

Juliette giggled and looked at the TV, pointing to it when she spotted charles’ car on the grid. “That's papa!!”

“You're right baby, that's papa! He's going to win the championship tonight, don't you think?”

Juliette nodded and rested her head on your shoulder as she continued to stare at the TV.

As the race started, you held Juliette close, your eyes glued to the TV as you watched Charles go from 3rd to first in about half a lap. The whole garage went crazy as he overtook both red bulls into turn 3. You were so proud.

The last lap had arrived before you knew it. You stood up, holding Juliette on your hip as you watched the screen closely. Charles was in the lead by a little over a second at that point, but you knew better than to assume that he was going to win this. A lot could happen in one lap.

“And Charles Leclerc has done it!! He wins the Abu Dhabi grand prix!! And the world championship!! Charles Leclerc is a world champion!!!”

You teared up and hugged Juliette tightly. “Papa won baby!! He did it!!”

Juliette wiped your tears away and clapped her hands “papa won!! Papa won!!!”

You laughed and kissed her cheek before walking out to the bottom of the podium with the team.

Charles climbed out of his car, standing on top of it while pointing up to the sky. After a few moments, he hopped down and ran over to you and Juliette, hugging the two of you tightly.

You smiled and hugged him tightly. “I'm so proud of you, mon amour! You did it!!”

Charles took his helmet off and kissed you deeply. “I’m so glad you’re here. Thank you for being here.”

You smiled and kissed him back. “I'm glad to be here, my love. I am so incredibly proud of you.”

Before Charles could say anything else, Juliette reached for him. “Papa!! Up!!”

Charles laughed and took Juliette from you. “Do you want to come up there with papa?” he asked, pointing to the podium.

Juliette nodded and rested her head on Charles' shoulder.

You watched as Charles walked up to the podium with Juliette. You couldn’t help but smile when you saw how happy the two of them looked. The two of them were your entire world- and you couldn't be any happier.

what's your top 5 best drivers on the grid (based on pure skill, not cars)

Excellent question anon. Let's get to it.

5. Oscar Piastri

A bold choice perhaps considering he's one of the greenest on the grid still, but Oscar is a future WDC. His attitude and approach to the sport is cool, calm, collected and reeks of a future WDC. The mental aspect is such a large part of F1, I mean, look at his teammate for example. Lando is a brilliant driver but he can't seem to overcome a mental block he has to being in P1. Oscar, on the other hand, seems almost unfazed at the idea of winning, or if he has an issue with the car he seems almost zen about it, still trying to drive to the best of his ability. And Oscar has ability, lest we forget his pedigree as F3 and F2 champion in his rookie seasons. I think Oscar will ultimately have to move teams in order to mount a proper WDC campaign, since McLaren have made it fairly clear they'd prefer to centre Lando, but I have no doubt that from 2027 onwards Oscar will be competing for WDCs.

4. Fernando Alonso

Crazy consistent and he's our beloved Shakesperean villain who just can't seem to die. He puts that Aston in places it should not be and can still pull off some pretty insane racing (his overtake on Checo in Brazil 2023?). He's still got it. Nothing more to be said really.

3. Lewis Hamilton

I physically could not place the GOAT, the greatest driver this sport has ever seen anywhere outside the top three. In fact, the only reason why he's not higher is because P1 and P2 are younger and have the benefit of having easily a decade to improve their skill further. But make no mistake, Lewis Hamilton is the greatest of them all. He's had a rocky couple of years with Merc, and I honestly think his results now are just a reflection of his and Merc's relationship breaking down and should not be taken as a deterioration in skill. I have no doubt that from next year, we will start to see Lewis wins again and maybe even a WDC campaign in 2026.

2. Charles Leclerc

We all know my heavy Charles bias is a thing that exists, but Charles is truly probably the most naturally talented driver on the grid at the moment. The way he handled that brake balance in Bahrain when probably any other driver, save the two others in the top three here, would've had to DNF. Charles's F2 season was also absolutely insane, to the point that he was drug tested more than any other driver IN THE PADDOCK (F1 included) in 2017 because the FIA were convinced he must be cheating. The hype around Charles is justified and true, and the ONLY reason why he doesn't have a WDC yet is Mattia Binotto. But I truly think 2025 could be a year for a Charles WDC, for reasons ranging from Red Bull hitting a development ceiling and Lewis Hamilton drawing in an insane amount of talent to the Scuderia. I think in a lot of ways some of the drives that Charles pulls off get overlooked because he makes them look so effortless and easy. He will be the next driver to win a WDC, make no mistake, and with the way that Fred Vasseur is setting up Ferrari, I think it's likely that we will see a period of crazy Charles Leclerc dominance before this decade is done.

Max Verstappen

I debated between Charles and Max for n1, but ultimately I think Max's consistency speaks for itself. I mean, he's won from the most positions (P1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 14), and has an average race placement of 1.27 last year. Yes, Max has had the gift of a consistent car and a brilliant team for the past few years, but even before he started his crazy winning streak, his average race finishing position minus DNFs was 3rd in 2020. Max is on peak form right now, and to place him anywhere other than first would be ridiculous.

If you’re not a francophone, you may have missed the GP Explorer 2, the second edition of a 24-pilot F4 race ran at Le Mans today, organized by France’s #1 YouTuber Squeezie and hosted on Twitch. There were 60 000 people at the circuit and 1.3 million concurrent viewers online at its peak. Every driver in the race is a French content creator, who have been training for this race for the last few months.

Every team had a sponsor (Overwatch, Samsung, Subway, Nord VPN, etc… even Alpine!) and special liveries, racesuits, and personalized helmets.

Some very familiar faces were in attendance; chiefly Pierre Gasly and Esteban Ocon, Théo Pourchaire and Victor Martins, and the participating creators were trained by the FFSA, the French Motorsport Federation.

There were ups and downs, some DNFs, a new P1 this year, and even though it was only 15 laps, completed by amateurs, it was some of the most entertaining racing you’ll see all year. And that’s because it involves people who are in love with motorsports already, as well as opening doors for some who are just now discovering it. Seeing the joy on the guys who stepped on the podium, and seeing the satisfaction on those who just wanted to finish the race was so euphoric, you really understand why formula racing makes the best memories.

GP Explorer is an event that is a love letter to Motorsport, a love letter to friendship, and a great human experience that brought so many of us together. These kinds of events are truly working on growing the sport!

Relatively new to F1, put on random races in bg while working.

So I put on 2019 Hungary where Max still wins, 6 cars inc. Charles and Lando DNF, Seb goes from 20th to 2nd, Kelly gives birth to Daniil's child as he races, like 5 yellow flags, Merc has the worst day ever?? This was insane and peak entertainment.

Suffice to say I didn't get any work done.

FEBRUARY 2024 WRAP UP

Not as many books this month! And not just because February has fewer days, I was really in a funk this month and struggling to pay attention to my audiobooks (and enjoy them). You wouldn't think there's such a thing as too many books, but I think the overtime hours at work are hitting their peak mental health destruction. Here's to hoping things improve in March!

The Divorce Colony (4.5 stars) - genuinely can't believe this was my 3rd nonfic of the year already! I picked a print copy of this up at a library sale in December after hearing about divorce colonies in the early 20th century on a recent episode of the 99% Invisible podcast. Turns out this book was actually about the beginning of the moment that took place in Sioux Falls, South Dakota in the 1800's. Western states had shorter residency periods and less strict divorce laws, so women (and the occasional man) would travel west and live there for several months in order to obtain a divorce. This book tracks the movement through the stories of 4 of the more infamous cases to make the papers, and does an incredible job of weaving in the surrounding political and religious discussions. Would recommend, and has a great cover to boot!

Renegades (3 stars) - a reread, and for some reason it was torture. I originally read this back in 2018 and loved it, and wanted to tackle it again and actually finish the rest of the series. But I kept getting worked up and frustrated this time around! It kept trying to take itself seriously while also being very YA and kind of superhero-camp, and I was absolutely overthinking it lol. I found the strength to press on into book two, Archenemies (3.5 stars). I liked it a bit more! Something about it being new, the story being a bit more settled and maybe getting a better grasp on its message/politics, the characters growing more, me figuring out that I shouldn't listen to the audiobook for more than an hour or so at a time, lmao. Not great, but fun, and possibly worth reading? I'll keep y'all updated when I finish book 3.

Hula (5 stars) - incredible. Part generational family story, part history, part discussion of what it means to be Hawaiian, culturally and legally. Not always the easiest of reads, but it was so so worth it. It was also doing something very interesting with parts of the narration voiced by a collective "we" (culture/community?) that I would love to get a look at in print. Highly recommend, I'll definitely be getting myself a copy.

Something Close to Magic (4.5 stars) - an absolute delight! The Gail Carson Levine comp on this one is not entirely unearned, anyone who's a fan of fairy tale type fantasies will enjoy this, I had a great time! Very interestingly, it has characters who are in their mid to late teens, but is written in a way where they're still allowed to be young, to the point I'm surprised it didn't get shoehorned into MG instead of YA. If the author writes any more of these I'd be happy to read them.

Crying in H Mart (3.5 stars) - nonfic number 4! I'm sure everyone's heard of this one by now, which is why I finally picked it up. It's fine (which is why it got an extra .5 star), but on the scale of take it or leave it, I'd leave it. It just wasn't for me and I kind of wish I'd dnf'd it. A great cover though.

Lud-in-the-Mist (3.5 stars) - this one seems to be considered a sort of early precursor to fantasy and fairy tale type stories from the early 20th century, and I was eager to try it! While I definitely don't think it would feel out of place amongst it's more recent fellows (think the Last Unicorn, Robin McKinley, DWJ, etc), I absolutely could not get into it. Probably the chief recipient of "my brain doesn't want to cooperate, sorry," so maybe I'll give it another shot someday.

A Sinister Revenge (4 stars) - enjoyable as always! Not to hide this deep in my reviews or anything, but have the Emily Wilde people tried Veronica Speedwell yet?

Pip Bartlett's Guide to Magical Creatures (3 stars) - This one's been sitting unread on my shelf for a while, and since I was on a bit of a Maggie Stiefvater run, I figured it was perfect! Well. Unless you are like 7, this was so bad. Not good. Having previously read and not liked a book by Maggie's co-author Jackson Pearce, I think it would not be unreasonable for me to assume she did most of the writing while Maggie did the illustrations - if the audiobook had been any longer than 4 hours I'd have absolutely DNF'd it, and I have no intention of continuing the series.

Moby Dyke: An Obsessive Quest to Track Down the Last Remaining Lesbian Bars in the Country (4.5 stars) - part of me was wondering what I was doing trying this lol, not being someone who drinks or goes to bars, OR, as previously mentioned, is not the biggest fan of memoirs. It was not, as I hoped, also part research project, but it is a travelogue, and as a consequence has a strong narrative thread. It also has a lot of discussions about issues in the LGBTQ+ community, and overall I really liked it once I figured out what it was doing!

Pixels of You (3.5 stars) - a very short sapphic rivals-to friends-to lovers graphic novel about a human-form AI and a human with an android eye competing for a photography internship at an art gallery. The creators clearly put SO much thought into their characters and worldbuilding, but sadly there is nowhere near enough length here to do it all justice, and a number of elements felt very odd or under explored. The relationship parts are great! I just think this needed to be twice as long to really given everything its due, or maybe explored in prose instead.

The Memory Librarian (3.5 stars) - to start, I know nothing about the musical album this is related to, so I don't know how much that might have affected my reading. Overall I wasn't super impressed - when I discovered that the first story was cowritten by Alaya Dawn Johnson - no shade to her - I almost dropped it then, I just really didn't like her writing style in the one book I've read. But I stuck through it. Of the five stories, only one really stuck in my mind - Nevermind, cowritten by Danny Lore, which I could have read an entire novel about. I wish I could recommend it on its own, but overall I just don't quite understand the world Monae has created.

The Djinn Waits a Hundred Years (3.5 stars) - I probably should say more about the book, it was fine, I was surprised to find that it's set in relatively current day, I found myself a lot more interested in the second narrative about the house's history, which did make me cry a bit. Mostly though, I really just want to let you know how MUCH of a non-entity the djinn was in this story, I have no idea why it was there and why it was included in the title of the book. All the author had to do was make the house a little more sentient and haunted and it would be fine, idk. Read it if you want, but it's not one I would rec.

DNF'S

Foundryside - I was so ready. I had the first two audiobooks checked out, I had the third one on hold. I started this but oh, the writing. bleh. I was looking thought reviews and someone referred to it as something like "21st century internet speak." In a high fantasy novel. I noped out at just 10%.

Earthlings - I've considered the author's other book before but haven't read it, but thought maybe a sci-fic book would work better for me? The beginning was odd but not uninteresting, and I might have continued if it had stayed that way. But then the main character was in school(?) and her teacher started getting handsy after class and I wasn't invested enough to stick it out.

A Far Wilder Magic - the success of Something Close to Magic made me a little too hopeful I think, bc while I'm still a little leery around YA, I know people have liked this. And it sounded interesting, truly, and I love the cover. But first it was the religion stuff. And I didn't really like the characters. Then it's like, oh, this is the same plot as The Scorpio Races, but nowhere near it's quality in any shape or form. I decided to stop while I was ahead, before I started to actually dislike it. (anyway here's your PSA to go read The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater, I recommend doing it in October if you can).
