here’s my take on the sumeru characters as an actual middle easterner

so to say the very least im not surprised. like at all. but very disappointed?? as a disclaimer, i personally am on the lighter side of the skin tone spectrum, but still pass as middle eastern. my family itself is varied, some of my relatives are darker or tanned, while others, like me, are lighter. on that note, having maybe a couple of light skinned characters would be ok, but having next to none at all for tanned characters from a region where many if not most people are going to be tanned is something i take issue with. while the game also has a grand total of two tanned playable characters as of now. yikes. i like the designs, i think they’re alright given who’s behind them. but id like them a lot more if the characters weren’t whitewashed??? like?? so you’re going to name them and clothe them in their cultures but make them pasty?? yeah yeah ok. some people have said it better than me, so my opinions are pretty messily laid out, but yeah!!! what the fuck!!! it’s giving very much aladdin. it’s giving you didn’t give enough of a shit about anyones culture so you mashed it all together and then didn’t care enough to make your characters look the part beyond their outfits. but you could put in the effort to be culturally accurate when it came to cultures like chinese, japanese, and german? or, you know to put it bluntly, cultures where most people tend to be lighter skinned. yeah. you did so well representing them, wb us? hm?

ok but genuinely no piece of fiction has ever affected me like this show has. not even my special interest. like of course i've had media affect me before and i've connected to characters and their feelings and their experiences, but never in a way so.. i don't even know how to describe it. extreme isn't the word. but anyways.

i am thinking about morality. how every human being has deep flaws. every person is fucked up and will do fucked up things. and i am thinking about relationships. with others and with yourself. with the things around you even. i am reflecting on my own journey in treatment. my own time spend inpatient. my own time spent denying help, denying i even needed it. reflecting on my own recovery. and i am thinking about if people really do or don't change. if people don't change, then that means that i am not what my illness has made me. that what i was still remains and that this is just temporary. and i am thinking about mortality. life and death. what does it mean to *live*? and i am thinking about unconditional love. is unconditional love real? have i experienced unconditional love? have i *given* someone unconditional love? i am thinking about love in general. love and life and pain and happiness and everything else.

there is not a single truly good or evil person in this show. everyone is deeply fucked up. nothing is black or white. nobody is one or the other. everything is a unique shade of grey. nobody is perfect.

literally there aren't even enough words to describe the way that i am feeling. the things that i am thinking about. i'm genuinely seeing the world differently, for better and for worse. i think it's beautifully fucked.

tbh as a six fan i feel so bad for thirteen fans

bc there are a lot of thirteen fans who are willing to defend shitty writing and poor decisions bc thirteen's their favourite doctor and there's no other way to say she's their favourite bc thirteen has only been off the air for 2 years at this point. thirteen also has the bonus problem of being the first female doctor which means a lot of her criticism is clouded by misogyny and other icky incel alt right shit

meanwhile with six, a lot of his problems had the benefit of the wilderness years, big finish, the expanded universe, and even people looking back at his doctor and realising that there was some good in his episodes. a lot of his fans didnt become his fans until recently and even most of his haters are quite clear that they hate the writing decisions and not the actor himself

like until jodie gets some good material - maybe big finish? theyre doing fugitive doctor and dhawan master stuff that might improve the problems with those - a lot of thirteen fans are going to be clutching at straws and trying to figure out why they like her and how to say so in a way that won't upset the predominantly male fandom, as well as won't disagree with common and very bloody obvious criticisms of chibnalls era
