As Twitter kills third-party apps, new life blooms on Mastodon
"And Twitter itself is bringing in less cash. As a result of massive staff cuts that left the company’s technical stability in doubt, and the restoration of banned accounts that are now free to spew vitriol, harassment and hate, Twitter’s advertisers are fleeing or pausing spending. The company’s ad revenue was down 71 percent in December, Reuters reported. Ad sales make up 90 percent of Twitter’s revenue.
So the cutting off of non-ad-displaying apps makes business sense for Twitter — but to have done so without a head’s up, or refusing to respond to developers’ queries about, was reckless at best and cowardly at worst. The company eventually amended its terms of service to forbid such apps, but it never did come out and say, “We did it because we need more eyeballs on ads,” which would have been the honest thing to do."

Twitter bans third-party apps. At might hide it behind some fancy jargon, but my general feeling is that with no ad revenue flowing from these apps, the loss of some users, but more people using the official ad-stuffed client, will be a net win. There might even be a cost to supporting the API that needs cut (or the team has already been fired)
Nothing like an upcoming interest payment on a loan to try and squeeze more money out in the short-term.

Third-party Apps
Third-party apps are developed by companies other than the ones that make the platform. They run on or the website that hosts them. Although the term “first-party apps” isn’t frequently used (we’ll use it in this post to clarify which is which), you may think of them as such. Wikipedia third-party apps The owner of the device or website may approve or disapprove of third-party apps. For…

We need to talk about Reddit.
Edit: Reddit CEO said "this too shall pass" when referencing the protest. Because of this, we need to continue protesting indefinitely.
Reddit, a platform I use regularly to interact with Fandoms, has recently increased its pricing for third-party API. The pricing is so steep that it is completely unaffordable and some third-party developers have already announced they are shutting down.
Mods on Reddit rely heavily on these third-party API products as Reddit's is trash.
This means it may be nearly impossible to properly filter and moderate subreddits.
Furthermore,
People with visual impairments will have a significantly harder time accessing Reddit and Subreddits.
This is due to these API providing proper text to speech apps and more.
I won't pretend to understand, but I will provide links at the bottom explaining more in depth.
Many Subreddits and users are GOING DARK on June 12 and June 13th, 2023.
Do NOT use the app, the website, or interact with it whatsoever unless it is on other platforms to protest.
For the betterment of the platform and the users, we must get this new rule overturned. Join Me in the protest.

Does anyone know if there's a way to get cohost on my android phone?
I'm mainly active on tumblr on my phone & if I'm gonna be active on cohost, I'm gonna need a way to access it easily on my phone.
I can't find any apps for it on the store.
(Edit; thanks everyone for your help, I now know how to get it set up on my phone. I'll be leaving this post up for others who might be confused like me & could use the information in these notes to help)

tumblr has always guessed your location based on your ip, you can see it when you go to your settings to view your active logins
Tumblr media
that's not the same as geolocation or location tracking, which uses a GPS to pinpoint your actual location

Hey by the way since this keeps being a problem
If you are going to a hotel and there is any possibility whatsoever that the hotel will be fully booked
Like for a con, a concert, a big event of any kind
Book through the hotel’s website
You will pay more than if you use those apps and sites to find you the best deals
You know what you get for that money though?
You get the fucking room
Hotels and all those deal sites can will and DO book more rooms than the hotel physically has all the fucking time
Third parties are the first to get kicked, because the hotel prioritises the people who booked through their own website
Every year a dozen people at least end up scrambling for a room cuz they showed up and ooooooh saved $100/night on a room except the room does not exist and they’re just fucked
