Oprah Winfrey just released her annual list of favorite things-capping off with a whopping 107 items. If you're still reeling from Gwyneth Paltrow's 2017 Goop guide, rest assured that no yellow submarines or antique French boats reside on Oprah's list. But, there is a $1,300 TV that will seamlessly blend into your wall once it's turned off. Oh, Oprah!

Returning for its 22nd year, Oprah's Favorite Things is an annual list of the media mogul's, well, favorite things. This year's list will be featured in O, The Oprah Magazine's December issue, which hits newsstands on November 20th. While some of the items are more on the costly side, there's also myriad budget-friendly options. A good number of finds are under $50, so us lowly peasants can at least pretend we live like Queen Oprah. Additionally, select products come with coupon codes. Holiday shopping just got infinitely better.

Day 464: Velma Vanton

Australian woman who coincidentally looked exactly like Wonder Woman, Velma Vanton was one day getting ready for a costume party when she entered the Truff costume shoppe. Asking for and discovering that the shoppe had no Amelia Earhart costumes, the clerk suggested she try out a Wonder Woman costume which was all the rage.

While changing, Truff arrived and the two men discussed plans to rob the national diamond mine of all it had when Velma Vanton came out in the costume, looking so much like Wonder Woman that the pair began to draw guns to shoot at her before realizing that it was Velma.

Awed by this, Truff hatched a villainous scheme that would allow him to enter the big leagues and become a master criminal...In America!

Thus introducing himself as a member of American army intelligence, Truff declared that Velma looked exactly like Wonder Woman and asked her if she wanted to become the great Amazonian princess.

Bemused and confused, Velma pointed out that there was only one Wonder Woman, and that she couldn't do half of the things Wonder Woman was famous for. To which Truff concocted a blatant falsehood.

Truff convinced Velma Vanton that 'Wonder Woman, Amazonian princess' was a falsehood concocted to fool the enemies of American army intelligence. In reality, Wonder Woman was the code name for a unit of six special agents all of which shared similar features. Each of these supposed members were talented in specific things, combined forming the complete picture of Wonder Womans fantastical talents which no one person could possibly accomplish.

I just want to take a moment to applaud that specific number since there just so happens to at that point in history to be exactly six people who look identical to Wonder Woman.

Velma convinced by this, declared that if it was to make a difference in the world she would happily join and thus Velma was suckered into aiding Truff with his criminal efforts.

Leading Velma to the national diamond mine, Truff knew that everyone trusted Wonder Woman and convinced Velma that the mine had been taken over by criminals, and that he wanted her to go down to the thugs guarding the entrance, and command them to lay down their weapons, which anyone should do when Wonder Woman tells them so.

Velma does so and the guards without hesitation do as she commands, even asking for her autograph before being mugged and knocked unconcious by a couple dozen boxing kangaroos who made up Truffs gang.

Soon making off with sacks of diamonds carried by his kangaroo army, Truff escorted Velma Vanton to a cargo plane which contained the entirety of Truffs gang and loot, declaring that they were heading for American army intelligence headquarters.

And thus they flew off for America, with Truff plotting to use this Wonder Woman trick to carve out a criminal empire.

Meanwhile Wonder Woman hearing word of this strange robbery by herself, decides to fly off to Austrailia to see what was going on. On the way however, she spotted a cargo plane landing on a deserted island to refuel, and the area surrounded by boxing kangaroos and a single woman who bore an astonishing resemblance to herself.

Wonder Woman landing her plane to find out what was going on, soon earned the panicked squawks of Truff who ordered his men to shoot Wonder Woman. Upon hearing this, all three of his human goons turned their guns on Velma intending to gun her down, only for Wonder Woman to leap to her aid, rescuing the poor Woman, deflecting every bullet and removing any doubt in Velmas mind that this was the true Wonder Woman.

Lassoing criminals, Wonder Woman speaking to the kangaroos convinces them to give up their criminal ways and live a life of love and peace. And thus the kangaroos taking Velma and the criminals, flew the plane back to Austrailia where they returned Velma home, escorted the criminals to jail, and returned the stolen goods to their places of theft, retiring from a life of crime.

As for Velma she in the end got to attend the costume party she had wanted to go to in the first place, and drew alot of praise for her stunning similarity to Wonder Woman.

L'Hotel de la Monnaie édifié (entre 1771 et 1775) sous Louis XVI fut un des lieux de pouvoir parmi les plus symboliques, puisqu'on y frappait la monnaie. « Un monument régalien », pour Bouvard, auquel Pécuchet aurait pu répondre : « Aujourd'hui on s'y régale, grâce à Guy Savoy » ! Cette petite plaisanterie – que Flaubert nous pardonne ! - n'est à la hauteur, ni du bâtiment – grandiose – ni de la cuisine – sublime – du chef trois étoiles qui s'y est installé en mai 2015. Et pourtant elle reflète fidèlement la décontraction dans laquelle Guy Savoy et son équipe entendent recevoir les convives, car, ici, le mot client est banni. La colonnade en vis à vis de celle du Louvre, l'escalier monumental, l'enfilade des salons auraient pu figer l'espace. L'Architecte Jean-Michel Wilmotte a imposé un code de couleurs dans une gamme de gris-bronze appliquée aux murs et aux matériaux qui laissent la vedette aux vues admirables sur la Seine, du Pont Neuf à celui des Arts. Quelques pièces maitresses des collections de François Pinault sont présentées sur les murs. La cuisine de Guy Savoy , dans la continuité de celle de la rue Troyon, son ancienne adresse, est à la fois innovante, sensuelle, gourmande et en mouvement perpétuel. En témoigne un plat nouveau, le « filet de saumon figé sur glace, consommé brûlant, perles de citron », préparé sur un guéridon devant chaque convive. Le filet de saumon d’Ecosse label rouge est disposé sur un bloc de glace carbonique (appelée aussi glace sèche) protégé par un film étanche. Une ou deux minutes suffisent à « saisir » le poisson, non par l’action de la chaleur, mais par celle du froid (- 80 degrés). Sa texture, en surface, se trouve modifiée de telle sorte que l’on peut avancer qu’il s’agit d’une cuisson par le froid. Dans l’assiette creuse ont été placées deux tiges, douces, juteuses et croquantes d’un chou chinois qui ressemble au céleri. Le filet de saumon est disposé sur l’assiette, le consommé brûlant est réparti assez largement, tandis qu’un ultime assaisonnement de perles de citron apporte la fine acidité de la citronnelle.

Parmi les entrées froides et chaudes

Huîtres en nage glacée, huîtres concassées, granité algue et citron

Deux différentes préparations de l’huître : huîtres posées sur une purée d’huîtres servies avec l’eau de mer en gelée ; tartare d’huîtres crues et granité algue et citron.

Raie « refroidie » au caviar, petit ragoût breton

Aile de raie entière pochée dans un court-bouillon, désarêtée puis nappée d'un concasséed'huîtres et de caviar frais (caviar Osciètre Royal et Baeri), puis disposée sur une assiette nappée de vinaigrette caviar et de crème caviar. Autour de cette préparation, des petites pommes de terre tournées, des sommités de chou-fleur et des petits triangles d'artichaut pochés dans un fumet de poisson.

Soupe d'artichaut à la truffe noire, brioche feuilletée aux champignons et truffes

Soupe d’artichaut à la truffe noire, lamelles de truffe noire et copeaux de parmesan. Brioche feuilletée aux champignons et beurre de truffe tartiné.

Suprême de volaille de Bresse, foie gras et artichaut, vinaigrette à la truffe

Terrine marbrée froide de volaille de Bresse, artichauts et foie gras, servie avec une vinaigrette à la truffe.

La Mer

Homard rôti, des lentilles coraillées, « verre breton »

Médaillons et pinces de homard rôti dans un feuilleté croustillant avec des lentilles et une macaronade accompagnés d’un navet confit. Royale de homard et crème de homard aux lentilles. Jus de homard émulsionné.

Le bar de la tête au pied

Tête de bar grillée, riz Basmati cuit dans un fumet de bar avec des pouce-pieds (en Anglais barnacle ) cuits au court bouillon. Jus de tête de bar, filet de bar en écailles grillées.

Rouget barbet « en situation », la mer en garniture

Rouget entier poêlé, épinards en branches, poudre d’épinards, encornets, jus aux foies, tomates confites, croûtons et « Fregula Sarda » aux encornets.

Saint-Pierre sur mer

Filets de Saint-Pierre cuits lentement avec des pousses maritimes et algues de mer. Navets confits au beurre d’algues, coques et palourdes. Fumet au jus de coques et palourdes, monté au beurre d’algues.

Viandes & volailles

Volaille de Bresse en papillote comme un pot-au-feu

Papillote de volaille de Bresse aux girolles et mosaïque de pommes de terre. Jus de volaille et girolles. Tartine d’os à moelle rôti et tartare de girolles.

Pigeon et légumes grillés au barbecue, les abats en jus

Selle d’agneau piquée aux couteaux de mer et rôtie, côtelettes d’agneau grillées, épaule d’agneau confite puis panoufles d’agneau confites. Salsifis rôtis au beurre noisette et tombée de feuilles de cresson. Jus d’agneau légèrement infusé au café.

RESTAURANT. Dining at Guy Savoy Paris, as if you were there…

It is with collectedness that Guy Savoy and his team intend to receive the guests, because, in their restaurant, the word ‘customer’ is banned. The colonnade opposite that of the Louvre, the monumental staircase, the row of lounges could have fixed the space. The architect Jean-Michel Wilmotte has imposed a colour code in a gamut of grey-bronze applied to the walls and materials that let the limelight to the admirable views over the Seine, from the Pont Neuf to that of the Arts. A few masterpieces from François Pinault's collections are displayed on the walls. The cuisine of Guy Savoy, in the continuity of that of Troyon street, its old address, is at once innovative, sensual, greedy and in perpetual motion. Testimony of his art, a new dish, the ‘fillet of salmon set on ice, burning consommé, pearls of lemon’, is prepared on a table in front of each guest. The ‘Label Rouge’ Scottish salmon fillet is placed on a block of dry ice protected by a waterproof film. One or two minutes suffice to ‘seize’ the fish, not by the action of heat, but by that of cold (-80 degrees). Its texture, on the surface, is modified so that it can be argued that it is cooked by the cold. In the hollow plate were placed two sweet, juicy and crisp stems of a Chinese cabbage that resembles celery. The fillet of salmon is plated, the burning consommé is distributed fairly widely, while a final seasoning of lemon pearls brings the fine acidity of the lemongrass.

Chilled oysters, crushed oysters, seaweed and lemon granita

Two different preparations of the oyster: oysters placed on a puree of oysters served with a jelly of sea water; Tartare of raw oysters and seaweed and lemon granita.

‘Chilled’ ray with caviar, small Breton stew

Whole ray wing poached in stock, boned then coated with crushed oysters and fresh caviar (Royal Oscietre caviar and Baeri), then arranged on a plate coated with a caviar dressing and a caviar cream. Around this preparation, small turned potatoes, cauliflower florets and small artichoke triangles poached in a fish stock.

The sea

Roasted lobster, corralled lentils, ‘Breton glass’

Lobster medallions and claws roasted in a crispy puff pastry with lentils and macaroni with a confit of turnip. Lobster royale and lobster cream with lentils. Emulsified lobster jus.

The sea bass from head to toe

Grilled sea bass head, Basmati rice cooked in a sea bass stock with barnacles poached in stock. Sea bass head jus, sea bass fillet with toasted scales.

Red mullet ‘in situation’, the sea as a side dish

Pan-fried whole red mullet, spinach leaves, spinach powder, squid, livers jus, confit of tomatoes, croutons and ‘Fregula Sarda’ with squid.

John Dory on sea

John Dory fillets slow cooked with sea shoots and seaweed. Turnips confit with seaweed butter, cockles and clams. Stock with cockles and clams jus, mounted with seaweed butter.

Meat & Poultry

Bresse Poultry en papillote like a stew

Bresse chicken papillote with girolles and potato mosaic. Poultry jus and girolles. Slice of bread with roasted bone marrow and tartare of girolles.

Barbecued pigeon and grilled vegetables, offal in jus

Spatchcocked boneless pigeon steamed on the barbecue, accompanied by a gratin of aubergines with hazelnut crumbs, pickles of red onions and grapes. Dressing with offal and brown jus.

Saddle and rack of lamb ‘earth and iodine’, shoulder confit, salsify and roasted jus

Roasted saddle of lamb with solens, grilled lamb chops, shoulder of lamb confit then panoufles of lamb confit. Salsify roasted in hazelnut butter and droppings of watercress leaves. Lamb jus slightly infused with coffee.

Dark chocolate

Chocolate biscuit made of almond paste, soaked in lime juice, with a chocolate ganache flavoured with cardamom and black pepper, accompanied by a dark chocolate sorbet.

‘Minute’ millefeuille with vanilla pod

Three thin layers of puff pastry interspersed with light cream with vanilla pod from Tahiti.

Different textures and flavours of citrus fruits, according to the seasons.

Ice cream trolley, sorbets, jars and biscuits of yesteryear

Ice creams and sorbets, rice pudding, caramel cream, chocolate mousse, wine and spice prunes, diamonds, macaroons, marshmallows, cheese cake and tarts.
