Yawning, you leave the palace after the lavish meal and walk around the garden to stretch your legs. Aside from your little walk, you're planning on meeting someone special.
The garden smells of the finest and most gentle smelling flowers. Although the garden is well kept and a wide variety of plants grow there, the design still appears very natural and if a plant grows around the stone benches or statues, it doesn't bother anyone. Rather, it makes the whole garden romantic.
On your way to your favorite spot, you carefully pick a few beautiful flowers and a few blades of grass. On the side of the Heras Palace there is a small pavilion, which is a bit overgrown with wild plants, next to a small pond. You look around you in surprise, normally he would have been there by now. Without giving it a second thought, you sit down on a bench and place your flowers next to you. You cast your eyes over the palace wall and look at the balconies and windows and wonder if there were ever so many lights on in Hera's Palace.
You feel a bit like a creep as you look into the windows and try to distract yourself by making yourself a flower crown. However, you quickly realize how difficult it is to keep your eyes away from the windows and find yourself constantly paying attention to the moving shadows. Despite the distance, you can clearly see what's going on on the ground floor. The whole gang laughs and every now and then it gets a little louder and chaotic but you're amused just by looking at it. Your grin doesn't leave your lips as you turn your eyes back to the fine crown.
Out of the corner of your eye you notice a light on the first floor turn on and your head moves up on its own. Even though you can't see who has entered the room from this angle, you wonder who is there. From your memory it should be one of the royal family's single rooms, so Nami and Robin are already out since you assume they share a room. To the right of the room in mention, is another room and in this room is the Straw Hat's captain. Who decided to live in the room next door? With your thoughts no longer on this planet, you don't even notice that you've been knotting your crown wrong for a while. Only when you reach for some new flowers you see the mess you've made. you sigh in frustration as you fumble the stems apart.
Stay on task, girl... you have to scold yourself.
The familiar rustling in the trees makes you look up again and you see your familiar companion Hetius flying towards you.
"Good evening Hetius." you greet him gently as he flickers his wings to fold back as he lands. He lightly jumps closer to you and chirps happily at you. "hehe yes yes, I know you're here for your reward and that's what you should get." You take a small bag out of your shoulder bag and the bird moves back and forth impatiently, which always makes you giggle. "Now be a little more patient." you laugh as he almost has his beak in your pocket.
You didn't even notice how the balcony door on the first floor opened and someone was watching you and Hetius doing your evening routine. Not even the laughter and wild hustle and bustle of the guests downstairs distracts you from your conversation with your feather friend.
"I'm telling you Hetius, it's been a wild day. Does today mean anything? To be honest, I can't shake the thought that something big is going to happen." As if Hetius understood you, he waited until you had finished talking and gave you a chirping answer.
"Yes, I see it the same way. They're all a few odd birds, but they seem to be peaceful. Don't you think so?" You and your feather friend look through the windows where the pirates are still happily going about their business. The chaos makes you laugh as your friend croaks along with you.
You feed the last bits of treats to the paradise bird while you continue to entertain him with today's events.
"Oh hello Law, are you also enjoying the 'quiet' evening?" Nami's joking voice makes you look to the side and you notice another light on the first floor. You recognize Nami leaning against the railing of the balcony. The light from inside shines a little in her face as she looks to her left at the balcony next to her. The balcony next to Luffy's room. You recall her words. Your question is now answered because now you know that Law is the one who lives in the room. Your eyes scan the balcony and, slightly in the dark, you see Law sitting on the wide railing, leaning against the wall with one leg bent.
Luckily it's dark so no one should see you as you listen intently. Hetius also sits up excitedly but everything remains quiet. "Seems like you'd rather be on your own, huh?" Nami looks up at the night sky, not caring that Law doesn't answer her. Apart from the commotion from below, she enjoys the peaceful evening. "I wanted to thank you and your crew for helping our captain. I'm not sure why you showed up, but without you we probably wouldn't have gotten away with it." Based on their words, you wonder how well the Straw Hats and the Heart Pirates know each other. From the sound of it, they're more like casual acquaintances.
Apparently Hetius couldn't stand his curiosity and he flew towards the balconies. You had tried in vain to catch Hetius, but you hadn't caught a single feather. You watched nervously as your friend landed on the railing next to the startled Nami, but you decided against stepping out of the shadows and remaining hidden. A little nervously, you play with your flower crown.
"We'll talk about it when Straw Hat-ya is awake again." A little perplexed, Nami looks over at Law. You guess she didn't expect an answer. You, on the other hand, have been waiting for this. You look down, a little embarrassed. You're a damn stalker… You're just eavesdropping on strangers that you've taken in as guests. Embarrassed, you complete the crown and concentrate on no longer listening to their conversation. In fact, you don't hear from Law anymore and Nami is busy with Hetius.
Tumblr media
The way everyone is behaving right now, no one could ever believe what everyone has been through. They sing carelessly, clink their mugs and a wild chatter fills the room. Everyone is having a good time and no one seems to be thinking about what was their problem a few days ago. The king sent servants to Hera's Palace to fulfill all of the guests' wishes. However, the only thing the team wanted was food and a lot of liquor. Apart from the normal servants, the king's personal butler also appeared during the evening trying to get the attention of the wild mob but his frail voice was not heard. He cleared his throat elegantly several times and with each time he became a little more desperate. But how the hell is anyone supposed to notice him when Brook puts on a little show with Chopper and Franky by his side? Most of the people were enjoying the show or having a conversation, the rest were doing mischief or were already too drunk to generally notice anything.
The Mink made himself comfortable on the carpet in front of the warm fireplace and fell asleep straight away. Law, who is standing at the window, has to grin at the sight. His gaze roams around the room, observing the situation. He sways his drink in the glass as he mentally tries to carry out the next steps of his plan. It's a problem that the Polar Tang got stuck in the narrow river, but on the other hand, this might be the safest place right now. His eyes land on the group of Straw Hats. Nami and Robin are elegantly served by the cook Sanji and chat. Zoro agrees to have one drink after another with his members and then he notices the desperate butler vainly seeking the pirates' attention.
"Oi guys!" Law's deep voice drowns out every voice and the room becomes quiet. All you can hear is the snoring polar bear and everyone else who is still there, looks at Law. Still standing at the window, he raises his arm, looks sideways into the room and points to the butler, who twitches slightly and quickly clears his throat as everyone's eyes were now on him.
"It's nice that we found a moment of peace, my dear guests." Before he continues speaking, the butler turns to Law again and bends slightly. "Thank you very much, sir...?" - "Law." - “Thank you, Mr. Law, for giving me your attention. My name is Giles, feel free to ask for me if you need any assistance.” Because of the butler's ostentatious language, a few pirates had to hold back their laughter, while a few cheekily giggled loudly. The butler elegantly ignored it and turned to Law again.
"The king would like to meet the representatives of your troops tomorrow over tea and biscuits." A gentle, warm smile spreads across the butler's face as he waits for an answer. “Will y/n be there too?” Nami asks the old man. “Of course, the young lady is responsible for you.” He looks sideways at Nami and coughs into his hand. "Please remember that in public and in front of the royal family you address the young lady by her title or at least call her princess." He folds his arms behind his back again and looks up into the air. "She will give you permission to call her by her name and that may be okay in private spaces... But she has to save face in front of the citizens." Nami nods understandingly at the man and he thanks her.
Before the butler said his goodbyes, he informed those present that he would pick them up from the salon shortly before lunchtime and that they were welcome to move freely around the kingdom until then. Law, who is only half listening, has turned his attention to something completely different. Through the window he watched someone walking in the garden a little further away in the shadows. When he takes a closer look, he sees you walking by the pond with your flowers. He follows you with his eyes as you look around and after a short while you sit down on the bench. He can't quite see what you're doing because the light is reflecting in the windows, but he's no longer interested in standing at the window and watching you. Just as you came into his field of vision, he thought of something he wanted to do. He said a brief goodbye to the cheerful group as he left the fireplace room and headed upstairs.
Law had previously asked the servants to give him a few books. Something about the general history and geography of Tanata and about the TaimuTaimu fruit. The maid seemed a little uncomfortable as she explained to Law that the information he was looking for was written down in books that were in the Royal Library. Access to these books is only available to scholars and the noble family. None of the staff are authorized to enter the library. But she could go to the city library. Law stares broodingly into her face while the awkward silence causes the young girl to blush a bit. Law gave her a brief answer that any books that related to the topics he mentioned would be ok.
Did she find something suitable? Law will find out as soon as he enters his room. Once in one of the royal rooms, Law's gaze wanders through the exquisitely designed room. His gaze finally landed on the desk next to the balcony door. There are a few different books stacked on the table. Not exactly much but better than nothing. Among the books is a quite old atlas with many maps of the seas and islands on the Grandline. Even if every card is useful, he can't do much with it because all the notes are written in a language he can't read. He glances briefly through another book as he sits down at the desk. The book in his hand looks like a fairy tale book. It is about a person who was once the user of the TaimuTaimu fruit. A laugh takes Law out of the pages and he looks directly at the open window.
"Now be a little more patient." he hears you say. He calmly goes to the balcony door, which is completely glazed, and tries to see where you are. There he sees you still sitting on the bench, only you are no longer alone. He watches you feeding a magnificent bird. With one hand on the door handle, the black haired man considers whether he should push it down and go out onto the balcony. For what reason? He shakes off the thought again. He turns away from the door and picks up the book he was about to leaf through when suddenly there was a knock on the door. On the other side of the door you can hear a few of the Heart Pirates standing in front of Law's door, arguing with each other and just being really loud.
"Hey Captain!!" There's a pretty wild knock on the door. "Sachi and Penguin painted Bepo in his sleep AND NOW.his.fur.is.RUINED!!" It roars from the other side. Law can also hear the Mink repeatedly apologizing and sobbing, whereupon the actually angry Ikakku comforts the bear in a sweet voice. “It’s not your fault, my darling!” Law, who closes his eyes in annoyance, doesn't hesitate for another second and finally decides to escape to the balcony.
They will figure out that a proper bath will solve the problem... He thinks so and flees into the cool evening breeze with the book in his hand. The night sky shines with countless stars and the moon illuminates the garden in a mysterious and cool white. Standing at the railing, Law can clearly see you feeding your feathered friend some treats. Even though all the commotion from below is a bit annoying, it's pleasant to listen to your laughter. In order not to attract attention, Law decides to lean against the castle wall and continue reading the book. He makes a few notes in a small notebook. The oracle predicts who will get the devil fruit... and he sets off to be able to deal with the powers. He writes down as he summarizes the words in his head. The story seems old but not particularly unrealistic. Lines described how the brave protagonist traveled out into the world to steel his body and then traveled back to Tanata, to undergo a daring ceremony and eat the fruit. It's written quite like a fairytale but it almost seems like a biography.
“I toootallyy ditched Thalia today…” a heavy sigh leaves your lips. "...She'll probably hold that against me for quite a long time." you giggle a little desperately while the bird answers you with its melodic chirping. Law's eyes peek just over the edge of his book. He studies your frustrated posture without a thought. A loud clatter from the ground floor takes you out of your thoughts and you look at the house with the bird. Because of your reaction, Law quickly went back to his book. He acts as if you weren't even there, even as he absorbed every word from your mouth and continued to make his notes on the book. The light in the room next door turned on and shortly afterwards a slight creaking of the door can be heard. Law glances slightly to his right as he sees Nami step out onto the balcony.
"Oh hello Law, are you also enjoying the 'quiet' evening?" This seems to be the end of Law's alone time, but he doesn't put his book down. He doesn't give her an answer either. After a rather brief conversation with Nami, a bird flew up to Nami, a bird that was very similar to the one that was with you. Law quickly looks down at you knowingly, but he doesn't see you anymore. You're already gone. Since Nami is now busy with the bird, Law devotes himself to the notes he has collected. One note in particular gets him thinking. He listed the skills described in the book in bullet points. A few remind him of the abilities he saw himself and what you told him, but there was more in the book. His eyes rest on a particular line.
Visions of the future.
As he understood's, the protagonist could only use this ability randomly rather than specifically. It was seen as more of a divine gift given to him in a war, than the power of the devil fruit. Law doubts whether that was really a gift. Can she do it? He circles the bullet point and decides to research it in more detail.
This seems useful.

so I was doing some research after watching movie 6...
...and apparently it was originally written as a comedy
Tumblr media
Yeah, I was surprised, too
Baron Omatsuri is not my favorite One Piece movie—Film Z has too many of my favorite tropes to be usurped from that position—but I do think it is the most daring. Of all the supplemental material I’ve seen and read, it feels the least...One Piece-ish.
Yes, that includes the noodle commercials.
If you haven’t seen the movie and can stomach a little spookiness, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. Unlike movies like Strong World or Z that have the look and feel of a manga arc, Movie 6 transplants the Straw Hat Pirates into a world that doesn’t feel like a One Piece story, taking risks and exploring themes that would never fit in the manga proper.
In addition to the obvious changes in art and animation style, there are supernatural elements that don’t make sense within the One Piece world. None of the Straw Hats win a fight—Luffy included, although he is heavily implied to have killed the big bad at the end. The moral of the movie, if it can be said to have a moral, is if you lose the people closest to you, the answer is to forget about them and make new friends. The story ends with many questions left unanswered and the main drama between the crew unresolved.
And, if you allow me to get philosophical for a moment, I wish there were more movies like it. As I wrote in my review of Novel A, I don’t go to supplemental material or side stories looking for a repeat of what’s in the manga. Oda has written 1000 chapters of One Piece—why not spice things up a little and try something different for a change?
I know the answer isn’t that simple, and by their very nature not all risks will pan out. There will be people who don’t like this movie because it’s different, both in look and tone. But there’s something to be said about a creator putting their heart and soul into a work and having it show in the final product.
Which brings us back to the original premise. How does a movie go from a light-hearted comedy based on a variety show theme to...this
Tumblr media
Baron Omatsuri was directed by Mamoru Hosoda and came out in 2005. To put that into perspective, the movie was in production when the Luffy vs Usopp fight was first seen in the manga. Manga!Luffy had not yet faced the challenge of an inter-crew disputes when the story was being written and boarded, nor did the creative team have the events of Sabaody and Marineford to see how Luffy would react to the loss of his loved ones. They were working without a full understanding of Luffy’s character, and to a lessor extent the character of the Straw Hat Pirates, and it seems like Oda was much less involved In production than has been in movies since Strong World and beyond.
Likewise, Hosoda had just left a tumultuous situation at Studio Ghibli while working on Howl’s Moving Castle, and if this interview is anything to go by (https://instrangeaeonsblog.wordpress.com/2016/04/24/mamoru-hosoda-on-omatsuri-danshaku-animestyle-interview-part-1/) was going through a lot of personal shit when he was brought on as director. The script he was given was originally written like a variety show—something that was carried over into the various trials seen in the final movie—and meant to be a lighthearted affair after the relatively serious Movie 5 (which I have not seen am thus unable to compare tone).
With that backstory in mind, it’s easy to see how the bickering and backbiting between the Straw Hats early in the movie is a metaphor for Hosoda’s time at Ghibli, which is something he admits to in the interview. Movie 6 feels different than any other One Piece movie because it’s the project of a man who has had to endure the loss of those who he was close with, at least in a professional capacity.
There are moments in Movie 6 where Luffy doesn’t feel like Luffy. More than once a member of the Straw Hats ask him to intervene during arguments, moments Luffy either ignores or doesn’t notice. It’s a version of Water 7 where instead of fighting Usopp, Luffy ignores the underlying differences within his crew, and as a result loses everybody.
The structure of the three trials follows a clear path of deterioration within the crew, the initial goldfish scooping game showing the Straw Hats at their best and inciting the jealousy of the Baron, the ring toss sowing discord among the crew even as they snatch a narrow victory, only for them to be utterly crushed in the third and final challenge as they’re unable help one another survive.
It is somewhat implied that the Breaking of the Fellowship(TM) is magical in nature—that like the One Ring, the Lily Carnation was able to influence the Straw Hat’s thoughts and actions, but this is never stated outright and I prefer the more mundane interpretation: That without strong leadership the Straw Hats fell victim to the manipulative machinations of the Baron, and simply self-destructed as a result.  In the end, it’s up to the interpretation of the viewer.
And speaking of things up to interpretation, I love how the Lily Carnation isn’t explained in the slightest. The plant that initially absorbs the Straw Hats looks more like the stem of a devil fruit than a flower, it for some reason rings like a gong when hit, and somehow is able to turn pieces of itself into facsimile of the Baron’s old crew who can somehow move around despite being plans. It’s weird, it’s wonderful, and the element of the unknown works so well in the horror-lite setting.
My personal theory is the island somehow managed to eat a devil fruit which manifests itself as the Lily Carnation (which due to the L/R conflation in Japanese, is pronounced ‘reincarnation’, which I think is a nice touch of foreshadowing that may or may not have been intentional).
(Also, I can’t decide if little chewing animation it makes when it’s eating people or the weird bullseyes it makes when shit gets real are the most terrifying thing in the movie.)
Tumblr media
Hmmm, tasty.
Anyway, this is getting long, so here are some final thoughts:
1) This movie has some low key fantastic outfits. The Straw Hats all look very cool without being over designed like a lot of recent movies. Big hat Robin is of course a fave, and makes me really want to see her in a Carmen Sandiego getup.
2) Screenshots do not do the animation of the movie justice. It’s very fluid and has a lot of excellent expressions/poses, although I admit the 3D is jarring at times. Do not let the art put you off if you haven’t seen it
3) Also, I don’t think there’s any shading? Like at all? The movie does a lot of cool stuff with color instead. For example, the scene where Luffy initially loses to the Baron his skin goes all grey, and I thought it was because he was fighting at night, but it stays grey even in the better lighting of the underground tunnels and stays that way until he finds out the Straw Hats are still alive, where it returns to his normal color
4) There’s an extended Benny Hill-type gag when Luffy first chases after the little mustache pirate that’s perfectly timed to the music, and ends when Luffy just uses his power to grab him. The comedic timing is amazing and it’s probably my favorite funny moment in the movie, of which there are several despite the overall darker tone
5) The extended jungle shot from Nami’s POV? Very cool
6) I love how from the earliest scenes nothing is as it seems. The opening text is Robin reading the map, but the storm that’s seen on screen is the one that sank the Baron’s crew. Likewise the whole fancy city is shown to be fake panels early on, the goldfish catching game is a trap, etc., etc. It does a good job clueing the viewer in early that’s something’s very wrong on the island, even if they don’t realize it at first
7) I don’t think this type of movie would work in modern One Piece without somehow nerfing Luffy. Horror works best when the protagonist is weak and vulnerable, and that fits best with a pre-Gear 2/3 Luffy (same with the rest of the crew, tbh. I was waiting for Nami to use her lightning stick during the games, forgetting it hadn’t been boosted yet).
8) I like how there are four captains on the island representing different levels of loss—the Baron has lost his crew and wants to destroy all others because of it, mustache pirate lost his crew and is willing to put it behind him to make new friends, Luffy has freshly lost his crew and hasn’t decided what path he will go, and coward dad hasn’t lost his crew yet but is at risk if he doesn’t change his cowardly ways
9) I think the reason why Chopper was the first Straw Hat to disappear is he’s the most likely to play the part of peacemaker. He’s also the only crew member needing rescuing at the end of the goldfish scoop game, when Luffy foolishly puts his life at risk trying to save him from drowning, just like he recklessly charges the Baron at the end of the movie. Except that time there was no Sanji to save him, leaving Luffy to get his ass thoroughly kicked
10) This is a very good Halloween movie, and I’m glad I watched it in October

The Language of Flowers
Summary: Varian may have reached an agreement with the king, but he does not have to like him. Quite frankly, he finds everything the king stands for to be deplorable. As he is Rapunzel's father, Varian will refrain from seeking revenge. But that does not mean the alchemist can't get the final word before he leaves Corona.
Note: I never cared for King Frederic's character, but after reading quite a few fics, I have decided that...I really do not like the guy. Anyway, I doubt Varian would actually opt for insulting his enemies through plants, but that is something I have considered many, many times.....give me back my mail, Karen.
It's petty, sure, but hey, it beats reconstructing ancient automatons. It's less effort, too.
AO3 LINK
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“I need you to sell me the most terrible bouquet of flowers, one that will spell out complete loathing and contempt towards my enemies,” Varian states, the perfect image of innocence as he smiles at the flower seller. “Something that will be the most passive aggressive way to say ‘fuck you’ and not get me hanged on the spot.”
“So…no funeral flowers?” she asks, rolling her eyes.
“Right, nothing for funerals or something that could get me indicted for a crime.” Originally, Varian had meant to send funerary flowers, but…that could certainly be construed as a threat against the crown. He had thought of the idea on a whim. Revenge was sweet, sure, but…he’d rather not do anything severe.
While Varian had made amends with Rapunzel and is on decent terms with most of the royal family, it is not a correct assumption to say that he may hold a bit of a grudge against the king. Varian had not intended to pull this little prank, but looking back, it was more than due. It was not merely the king’s actions against him that had incurred his perpetual wrath and contempt. Thanks in-part due to the inactions of his royal travesty, King Frederic, the entirety of Corona was nearly overrun by the black rocks. And that is not even getting into the matters of how he had found out, years later, Rapunzel had been freed from one tower only to be thrown into another tower. He does not like to recall much of what happened from that year, but the alchemist knows he had a part in that. Still, it does not excuse Frederic from his actions.
The king had gone too complacent in this moment of peace. Afterall, everything is as it should be. No more threats, Saporians, tiny blueberry demons, deathly sharp black rocks, crazy blue-haired rock ladies, and most of all—no more of his ‘alchemy’. At least, that is what they had all been led to believe. His role as the royal engineer was cushy and safe...but there was no adventure or life to be had with being trapped. Certainly, he had been happy with his role for the first few months, to have been accepted by Corona. He felt as if he had finally found a purpose in his life, but the castle was stifling…too constricting. Now, he can see that this job…it was not for him, nor for his benefit. In the end, he was the last problem to be fixed, the only remaining piece that could not fit into the puzzle.
Corona merely wanted him to play his part at the expense of who he truly is, but not anymore. In just a mere few hours, the kingdom will have to make do without their royal engineer. He’ll finally be off, away from this kingdom and following in the footsteps of his mother. It is bittersweet to leave the land he had called home, but Varian can tell he is not wanted. At least, he knows the kingdom does not want ‘him’, but rather, the person they expect him to be.
He’ll be gone, but it does not mean he can’t have a little fun at the king’s expense in the process.
“Will these do?” The sales woman drawls in a dispassionate tone as she points her finger at…what could quite possibly be the most garish flowers Varian had ever seen. All an outrageous shade of hot pink, they honestly seem like the type of flower Rapunzel would be into. “Only that one shoemaker buys them.”
“What flowers are they? And what do they symbolize?” Varian asks, walking up to the pink flowers and plucking a few of them from the vase.
“Peonies,” she automatically responds, placing a hand on her cheek as she leans her elbow on the table. “They’re as passive-aggressive as you can get with flowers. You must really hate whoever it is you’re giving them to—”
“Perfect.” Varian grins, picking up the vase and placing it on the counter, water nearly sloshing out of the vase in the process. “I’ll take them all. Do you have anything else?”
“Not that I care,” she blandly mutters, “But how are you going to pay for all of these?”
“Don’t worry,” the alchemist chuckles…it…honestly does nothing to convince the clerk. Having the title of royal engineer practically thrust upon the alchemist as a method of placating had been underwhelming, but the title certainly did have a few perks. There’s no price too high for revenge.
 ---
All-in-all, Varian would call that little excursion of his a complete success. He may be stuck hauling quite a few [heavy] vases of flowers into the wagon, but the outcome would be more than worth the effort. In the end, vengeance would be reaped, and the king would be none the wiser. Varian wanted black roses; as dark and unfathomable as his complete and utter contempt for Frederic, but, well…the clerk merely rolled her eyes and insinuated his plans were pretentious.
Nothing would say ‘screw you’ more than a flower that proclaims the king is dead to him. Oh well…at least he had still completed the bouquet he had set out for. Unfortunately, the sun was still bright, which meant he had to hold off on his plans until nightfall. Luckily for him [and perhaps not so lucky for the king], Varian had his own place in the castle. He could come and go as he so wished, so…these flowers will just stay in his lab; buried underneath the castle. Afterall, besides his dad and Ruddiger, the only person who ever stopped by was Rapunzel.
The King wouldn’t know what hit him.
Besides the peonies, he had also opted for orange lilies and tansy. Nothing said ‘I hate you’ more than wishing for him to get decked in the face or mauled by a bear. Beautiful.
Varian knew his plan may be a bit ridiculous and a tiny bit petty, but it was so unlike him that he just had to try it. If the kingdom wanted him to be a different person, than by the Sun he was going to grant this one last request for them. He did live in a farming village, as well, so there was some irony to be had. Nonetheless, as long as it irked the king, his job was done.
“Hey buddy,” Varian says as Ruddiger hops onto the cart. The raccoon chitters, tilting its head in confusion and moving a paw towards a bright orange petal. “No, they’re not for you, but we’ll stop for an apple on the way to the castle.”
Consoled, the raccoon plops down in-between two of the vases, large eyes staring expectantly at the alchemist.
He could laugh, really—Varian was one step closer to his goal, but…he can’t risk fueling anymore gossip about his so-called ‘mad scientist’ status. Or the other rumors of how he was the princess’s feral wizard brother who lurked beneath the castle, waiting for the perfect moment to strike……
Actually, that last rumor was not entirely off the mark.
Shaking the intrusive thoughts out of his head, the alchemist sets his sights on the castle, grandiose in scale and bathed in the light of a warm spring day, for what he is sure will be the last time for a long while. Soon, he will be gone, and a new chapter of his life will commence.
At least, it will be, once he reaps vengeance against those who wronged him.
 ---
In the end, his plan worked without a hitch. Varian had snuck the flowers onto the king’s throne overnight, and no one had been the wiser. Of course, he and Ruddiger had stuck around the following morning—what good was it to pretty much insult the king and not be around to see the aftermath? While Varian is sure he wouldn’t understand the meaning behind the bouquet, he is certain Rapunzel will be there to fill in the gaps.
A gasp immediately follows as the princess places her hands over her mouth, tears threatening to spill down her face as her shoulders shake.
The king looks towards her, alarmed, while Queen Arianna merely looks amused. Her lips are quirked in a half-smile, green eyes lit up as she says, “What’s the matter, Rapunzel?”
“I—” The princess’s eyes trail towards Varian. He may technically be welcomed in the castle, but it is a rare sight to see him in the throne room. Though, since he is leaving, Rapunzel had insisted he visit them on the way out.
Ah, it seems she has realized just who the bouquet of flowers came from.
“It’s nothing, mom,” Rapunzel laughs, wiping tears from her eyes. Still confused as ever, the king furrows his brows, looking from the princess to the queen…until his gaze falls on Varian.
 “You—”
Biting back a smile, Rapunzel tries to restrain the king. Queen Arianna merely says, “Thank you for not giving him monkshood.”
“I think it’s time you leave,” the princess says, apologetically. There is no harshness in her voice as she says again, perhaps too lightly, “It’s best if you go now, Varian. Dad’s not looking too happy right now.”
“Alright, Rapunzel,” Varian says, bowing dramatically and tipping an invisible hat at the princess before giving a polite, respectful wave of farewell at the queen.
As for the king, Ruddiger merely sticks a tongue out at him, clearly sharing the same sentiments as the alchemist.
“Oh, and don’t forget to write me letters!”
“Will do, princess,” Varian says, whistling a bit too loudly as he knows it would drive the king insane. As he makes his way towards the exit, with Nigel sneering at him, the alchemist turns around—
“You can’t charge me for anything, dad,” the alchemist knows this could potentially get him killed, but he is certain Rapunzel won’t let this happen. “I have impartial immunity. Cassandra was let off the hook, so all I have left to say is—”
I can’t tell the king to fuck off no matter how much I hate him.
 “I hope you like flowers!”
 Ah, yes—
It’s best he takes his leave before the king sends the royal guard after him. Again.

Captain Magnum x gender neutral!reader
@rattyships ty for the request!
A/N: YES the title is a quote, YES it's from That One Song™, YES I based this fic off of that idea, leave me alone. Uh... Christmas. Yeah. Captain Magnum seems way too calm in this fic for my own liking, but y'know. Reader can paint even though I am physically unable to, so. There's that. Fluffy. Rated PG because there's one two "hell"s and one "damn" and that's it. It's cheesy and that's why it's great.
Word Count: 2.0k
--
You paced around your cabin, very anxious. Christmas was in three days! What were you supposed to get everyone? You didn't know what anyone liked! Or that they even celebrated…
Well, who says no to a gift, right?
You went over to your secret chest (nobody on that damn ship knew how to share) and opened it up to see how much treasure you had. Not much, but it was there. You could buy a lot in normal markets with these. Maybe you could convince the Captain to take you back home for the holidays?
Well, you never know until you try, right?
But what would you buy? They have quite enough gold and jewels, none of them seem to have any interest in anything, you doubted they'd like something homemade…
This was gonna be difficult.
You sighed and closed your chest, walking over to your door. You opened it to find said Captain standing there, the rest of the crew behind him.
"Hi, Captain," you blinked in surprise. You probably should have been more confused than you were, but this boat was already super weird. He was smiling at you.
"Mornin', first mate!" He greeted. "We found a treasure map on a ship we were lootin'. We're about t' start searchin' fer treasure!"
"Oh. Alright. Gimme a minute," you smiled and closed the door. You sighed and rested your back on the door. Maybe you could find something on the island to give them…?
"Yeah, they'll love a nice flower crown…" You snorted at your own idea. You sighed and grabbed up your stuff, opening your door and walking over to the crew. They were all talking about how they couldn't wait to find more treasure. You rolled your eyes. Don't they have enough of it? You took a head count of how many of them there were. Five… five crewmates, five presents. Captain Magnum noticed you and smiled.
"Thar ye be! I thought ye would lock yourself in yer cabin th' whole day!" He, along with the rest of the crew, laughed. You smiled saltily. "Wha' were ye doin' in thar?" You looked around, trying to come up with something.
"Um… I was… I was…" you looked out onto the horizon for a moment, your eyes softening. The crew looked at you.
"Y/N?" One of them called to you. "Are ye-"
"Painting," you interrupted.
"What?" Magnum asked.
"I was… painting…" you looked back to them. They all stared at you for a minute.
"You… you paint?" One woman asked. You smiled and nodded at her. All of the crewmates looked at each other for a minute.
"Uh… wha' d' ye paint?" The other woman asked. You shrugged.
"Whatever, really. Animals, landscapes, whatever's in my room…" you looked over at Captain Magnum to make sure this was okay. He sighed and plopped himself down on a stair. You smiled and turned back to the group.
--
You explained painting to the crew for 15 minutes. You had no idea they'd be so interested in your hobby. They asked so many questions, some of which you'd somehow never heard. How long had these people been at sea?
Eventually, you looked over to see Captain Magnum looking impatiently at the island the ship landed at 10 minutes ago. You chuckled at him and stood up.
"Captain's getting a bit annoyed, guys. Let's go," the crew complained, but got off of the ship as you walked over to the Captain. He raised an eyebrow at you and you mimicked the action.
"They find ye mighty interestin'," he commented. You smiled.
"Yeah. Not more than you though. I doubt anything could be more interesting than those logs you have for legs." You both looked at each other for a moment before laughing. He stood and you both followed the crew off of the ship.
He lead the way to where the treasure was, the rest of you trailing close behind. One of the crewmates, a boy who looked no older than twenty-one, took your arm. You raised both eyebrows and looked at him.
"So… wha' were ye sayin' about watercolors?" He asked softly. You smiled as the other crew members gathered around you again. You looked up at Captain Magnum, who was smiling at you all. He chuckled and turned back around, continuing to lead the way. You sighed.
"Alright… so watercolor is probably one of the most well-known types of paint…"
--
You had found treasure on the island, and most of the crewmates became interested in that, but the boy who has asked you about watercolors stayed as you explained how people originally made paints from flowers. You saw the curious look in his eyes, and decided what you were gonna get everyone for Christmas.
You were gonna paint for them.
What, you weren't sure. But you sure as hell were gonna paint. Maybe… their favorite animals? Or maybe an object they really liked…
You decided to ask them what they liked.
The woman with the bandana really liked sea creatures. Specifically, narwhals. They were very pretty and could also impale people. She liked that about them. You didn't think she noticed you scribbling everything she said into a small notebook.
The woman with the eyepatch really liked swords. She knew a lot about them; names, origins, uses… it was slightly unnerving, but you couldn't judge.
The boy liked plants. He liked the fact that they were living beings, just like people and animals. Only, they were smaller and couldn't talk. They could, however, feel. And he liked that. You couldn't get over how soft he was…
The man who was first mate before you liked… hats. He liked that they all basically had the same function, but looked so different. You could respect that. Hats were very cool.
The next day, you decided to paint them pictures of their favorite things in their respective color schemes, and added a different color for each background. A blue and white narwhal with a green background, a red and black sword with a navy blue background, a black and orange flower with a dark green background, and a brown and maroon hat with a pastel red background (no, not pink. There's a difference). You spent an entire day painting the pictures. They turned out very well, in your opinion. You just hoped the crew felt the same.
After you were finished with those, you asked Captain Magnum what his favorite thing was. He thought for a moment, stroking his beard.
"Well… I suppose it'd be treasure!" He answered. You knitted your eyebrows together.
"Really? Treasure?" You asked, hoping for something more.
"O' course, treasure! I be a pirate aft all! Wha' would I like if it nah be treasure?" You sighed in slight disappointment. You thought that you would find something new about him but, nope. He loves treasure the most. You nodded and turned around.
"Well, that or ye." You stopped dead in your tracks. Did you hear that right? You slowly turned back towards him. He looked away from you, towards the horizon. The setting sun illuminated his face, tinting it orange, pink, and yellow. He looked like he was ripped right from a movie...
"What was that?" You asked, slightly distracted by how beautiful he looked.
"Treasure be a pirate's fav'rit thin' o' course. But, since ye showed up... I reckon me fav'rit "thin'" be me first mate. Ye." He said nonchalantly. A small smile creeped onto your face. Magnum looked at you, since you hadn't said anything in a while.
"So, you're saying… you love me?" You asked, fishing for compliments. Magnum flushed a bit. It was mostly hidden due to the sun, but you could still see.
"Well… er…" He scratched the back on his head, thinking of how to respond.
"Cause that's what I'm hearing here…"
"Um…"
"Exactly how much do you love me, Captain?" You smirked, leaning on the side of the ship, your cheek in your palm. Magnum finally took a deep breath and looked in your eyes.
"More than all th' treasure in all th' seven seas…" he stated. Your eyes widened as your smirk fell. You felt your face heat up and you turned away from him.
"Well, uh…" you coughed, "I should… get to bed… wanna be up early tomorrow, so…" you shuffled away.
"First Mate Y/N!" He called. You turned back towards him.
"Merry Christmas." He said. You smiled.
"Merry Christmas, Captain."
--
You walked into the deck, the crew already gathered. You figured Magnum must've gotten them. You took a deep breath and walked over, the paintings in your arms. The crew all waved and greeted you. You smiled and stood in front of them.
"So, uh… it's Christmas as you may or may not know…" you explained nervously. "So, um… I decided that, as gifts, I was going to paint for you all… and these were the results." You move forward and pass out all the works you painted. All of the crew seemed happy with their pictures. They showed them to each other and gawked over the detail and bragged about how good they looked. You finally walked up to Magnum, who was steering. You held out a painting to him.
"Wha', fer me?" He raised his eyebrows and took the picture. It was of a red, blue, yellow, and black ship with a sunset in the background and sparkling green and blue waves. The words "a pirate's life for me" were written on the back. He laughed heartily and pulled you into a hug.
"Oh, ye really outdid yourself, mate! 'tis wonderful!" He complimented. You managed to pull yourself out of the hug after a minute or two and handed him an envelope. He looked over at the rest of the crew and, upon seeing that no one else had one, tilted his head a bit.
"It's from her," You explained, pointing. Magnum nodded and looked over at the woman who was showing off her narwhal. She glanced at the Captain and winked as the boy with the flower painting giggled. Magnum plopped down onto a step, but you stayed standing. He opened the envelope to reveal a card. On the inside, it said "This thing you two have is special, more special than anything I could try to get. I can, however, make you realize exactly what you have". You frowned.
"What's that supposed to mean?" You asked. Magnum shrugged and gave you the envelope. You looked inside, seeing something green. You took it out and your eyes widened.
Mistletoe.
Mistletoe?
Where the hell did they find mistletoe?!
You looked at Captain Magnum, who was staring at you. He raised both eyebrows at the plant in your hand. You were holding it between you two accidentally (on purpose).
"We don't 'ave t' if ye don't wants t'..." He told you. You took a deep breath, telling yourself to stop being so weird about it because you knew he loved you back. Besides, the crew had all left to put their gifts in their rooms. You leaned down, since he was sitting, and softly connected your lips. He sat there for a moment, eyes wide, before closing them. You both stayed like that for a few seconds before you pulled away all too soon. His eyes looked hazy as you smiled.
"Merry Christmas." You whispered and walked to your room, leaving Magnum to process what happened.
You entered your room and leaned your back on the door, smiling widely.
"Well, that was the best Christmas present ever…" you mumbled to yourself. You started to giggle as you continued to think about it. You put your hands on your face in embarrassment. It was only a couple seconds, why were you being so weird? You jumped a bit when you heard a gentle knock at your door. You turned around and tilted your head. Who could that be? It was getting late and the crew had already shown their appreciation…
Unless…
You opened the door to reveal, you guessed it, Captain Magnum. He was holding the mistletoe you had left on the deck. You looked at him and raised an eyebrow. He smiled.
"Do ye... Uh... Wanna do that again?" He asked sheepishly. You laughed a bit before smiling up at him.
"Absolutely."

Personality
Misaki is generally calm and collected, but she’s also very bright and cheery! She tries to remain optimistic and she had a solid group of friends, but she’s not extremely overly talkative or loud. Due to her quirk, however, her mood often depends on her surroundings. She works a bit like a flower would itself, so when it’s sunny and she’s well hydrated she may be more energetic and happy, but if she’s dehydrated and it’s dark out she’s more groggy and maybe a bit grumpy or less talkative.
Quirk
Quirk Name: Medicinal Botanokinesis
Explanation of Quirk: Misaki is able to produce and expel medicinal pollen from two flowers that sprout from either side of her head, often looking like double buns in her hair! The flowers fall off at least once a day and grow back just as quickly as another type flower. With each flower, she can use a different ‘ability’ depending on the components of the flower who’s pollen she expels. For example, if she has lavender flowers growing from her head, the pollen expelled can help make someone feel sleepy. Sunflowers could help reduce menstrual pains, angelica herb can be used to help heal colds and coughs, and so on. Some days, however, the flowers that sprout from her head have really no medicinal usage, so her quirk is rather ineffective during those times. She can expel pollen whenever she wants, but it is possible for her to ‘run out’, so she tries to only use her quirk when it’s needed.

Extra Information
Misaki thinks it’s super embarrassing when flowers that are weeds, such as dandelions, grow from her, so she’ll often be wearing a hat of sorts on those days and have it pulled down as much as she can.
She often harvests flowers she creates that can be used as herbs, such as lavender or chamomile! Most of the time she’ll use them to make her own blends of teas, but sometime she’ll bake with them as well!
She loves taking pictures of friends so sometimes she might ask them to pose, she likes to save happy memories in one of her many scrapbooks!
⇩ ⇩ more in depth info below! ⇩ ⇩
Clothing
Casual Style: Misaki loves ‘simple but cute’ so she’s all about nice jeans with a t shirt or blouse, so not lazy casual but not too dressy either. She also l o v e s overalls and they take over half of her wardrobe and her favorite outfit is her summer short overalls, a cute patterned tee, and a sunhat!
Common Accessories: A necklace with a small buttercup flower pendant. Also when she’s not in school, she almost always has her old fashioned Polaroid camera hanging around her neck!
Characteristics
Temper: She has a pretty average temper, but she is unfortunately an angry crier.
Strengths: She’s good at assessing situations around her and staying calm in frantic environments!
Weaknesses: She’s a bit awkward about sharing more serious feelings that are a bit more negative.
Goals/Drives/Dreams: She wants to become a plant geneticist mostly to be able to understand herself and her own quirk better and how both she and plants themselves can be used to help the world. She also wants to do field work, but that depends on how far she gets on being able to heal with her quirk.
Fears: She fears those around her feeling sad or depressed, so she tries her best to keep a happy attitude herself.
Likes: Gardening, photography, kayaking, hiking, crafty activities
Dislikes: Puzzles, being stuck indoors for too long, cold weather
Skills/Hobbies: Naturally she’s very good at gardening and her photography skills aren’t bad either!
Quirks: She physically looks more ‘wilted’ on cloudy or cold days, becoming more sluggish and having a slouched stature.
Health
Physical Health: She has a weakness for sweets and she doesn’t work out too often sooo she probably could be a bit healthier, but for a teen I’d say she is pretty average.
Mental Health: Mostly good! Like anyone she does suffer from bouts of depression here or there. She also suffers from panic attacks occasionally, but this only happens under extreme stress or anxiety.
    Mental Disabilities: None.
Sleeping Habits: Pretty good actually! Because of her plant like nature she gets sleepy almost immediately after the sun sets, so she’s usually in bed by 9pm at the latest.
Eating Habits: Not great, she has a major sweet tooth, she’s just lucky most of her weight goes to the “right” spots.
Inhibiting Injuries: None.
Relationships
Mother
    Name: Imani Otsuka
Quirk: She has a small water spout on her head, but it’s hard to see past her hair and doesn’t serve much purpose.
Relationship Status: Imani almost single handedly raised Misaki so they’re very close, Misaki is like a textbook definition of a mamma’s girl.
Father
    Name: Ren Otsuka (Deceased)
Quirk: His entire body makeup is like that of a plants, giving his skin a greenish tint and allowing him to ‘eat’ through photosynthesis.
Relationship Status: When he was still alive, Misaki was very close to him and grew up learning everything she knew about plants and gardening from him. Unfortunately he was taken from her when she was eight years old due to a sickness that couldn’t be cured in the same way as usual due to his genetic make up not being very human.
Friend
   Name: Tsukiko Kojima
Relationship: They’re very good friends as they both have a similar interests in gardening and their kind personalities fit each other well!
Friend
    Name: Mina Ashido
Relationship: Even though she hasn’t known her for a while and they aren’t in the same class, Misaki loves Mina’s happy spirit and she often gives her her own energy boost for the day.
Best/Closest Friend(s)
    Name: Tsuyu Asui
Relationship: They went to the same middle school together and Tsu was the first friend she made after moving away from her old school district so they’re very close!
Love Interest/Crush
Name: Todoroki maybe?? idek I have no clue tbqh
    Relationship:
Pets: Two chubby dumbo rats named Pancake and Tootsie.
History
Early Childhood (Birth - Age 6): Even though she doesn’t remember it, when she was born things for her parents were a bit difficult because at the time, they had still yet to get married, and while Imani spent a lot of time doing work in Japan, which is where she met Ren, she still lived in the United States. Once they were both stable enough to settle down, however, they quickly got married and Imani moved in with Ren in Japan. They were lucky to have decent jobs and while their lifestyles weren’t lavish, they made enough to live comfortably and Misaki was a happy young girl!
It was when Misaki was six years old that she developed her quirk, two round hydrangea’s simply popping up on her head one morning, however she didn’t learn the full extent of her quirk until she was older.
Mid Childhood (Age 7 - Age 13): Misaki was living a good, simple life, however things changed when she was about seven years old and her father fell ill. With him having to leave his work and Imani having to take care of him, things became a bit more stressful, however they were still as happy as they could be, Imani always teaching Misaki to make the best of even the worst situations.
Unfortunately, because Ren’s physical makeup was different then the average human, modern medicine at the time wasn’t able to help him and before the doctors working with him were able how to accommodate to him, he passed away. For a while after his death, their family was a bit of a mess, both Misaki and her mother hurting greatly. Misaki even had to leave school for a while, both her and her mother dropping into a depressive state, however her mother was a strong woman and soon picked herself up for the sake of her daughter and helped her daughter get along as well. She decided they needed a new start, but instead of moving back to America she simply moved her and her daughter to a new district closer to Tokyo. While Misaki was still upset over the loss of her father, she was quick to make friends at her new school, one of them being Tsuyu Asui. It took about a year, but she eventually got back to her usual calm and happy self, deciding she wanted to celebrate the memories she had of her father rather than dwell on the fact that he was no longer with her.
Teenage Years (Age 14 - Present): Even though she hadn’t gotten an exact lock on what she wanted to do career wise, Misaki had heard all about UA and knew that a diploma from such a school would surely help her in her journey, plus she hoped even if she didn’t enroll in the hero course that she could find help with developing her quirk. All that along with the fact that her best friend also planned on going to the same school and she knew this was the place for her. She didn’t get in with top scores, but to her that just meant she had plenty of room to improve, so she accepted the offer that she had worked hard for and is now on her way to wherever her journey would lead her.

shut up, stupid
(masterlist)
Tumblr media
Parting: Jerry x male reader.
Warning: Angst
Summary: The day before the revolution, go to Jericho to talk to Jerry and try to save him before it's too late.
---
You were climbing the bridge that led inside the boat, where the androids lived since they had become deviant or since Markus had "awakened" and "infected" them. You knew Jerry was there, because before separating you the day before I made him promise he would share his position.
You were lying on the bed nestled to Jerry who was wide-eyed, staring at the ceiling and its led flashed yellow, after you first opened one and then the other eye, you stood on your arms and looked at him.
"What's going on Jerry?" you asked, looking at him in confusion, his LED kept blinking though you spoke to him.
"Nothing, Y/N I think one of the Jerry was taken by the deviant hunter, we announced that we would go to Jericho, but only me and this other Jerry are out of that." he answered worriedly continuing to look at the ceiling without addressing him look.
"Jerry, you have to go away from here, I'll have to go to our owner in half an hour to help her and you can’t come or stay here." you said, getting out of bed and going to dress.
"I can't leave you and I can’t miss one day from work." he replied, looking at you as you dressed, you smiled and after you put a sweater you approached him and kissed him softly stroking the red curls.
"I will not be alone, don’t worry I will explain everything to Mrs Borker. You’ve to go to Jericho and then send me the position, I will join you." You comforted him by looking at him and then kissing his forehead.
"But ..." you interrupted him by putting a finger on his mouth and he looked at you seriously and put a lovely pout on his face. You were about to laugh, until you looked forward to the alarm. You were late, so I rushed to get dressed and kissed him quickly out of the house.
That was the last time you saw him, you did not know if it was still safe or if only one of the many Jerry was there. The fact that they could exchange information was a bit disturbing, but extraordinary at the same time. When you got the androids, they immediately surrounded you, you looked around you, afraid that they might hurt you, you lighted the flashlight and saw that they were badly placed, maybe they were more afraid of you.
"Who are you and what are you doing here?" Said a male voice, you tried to understand who had spoken but none of the androids that surrounded you, seemed to have opened his mouth.
"I'm Y/N, I'm Jerry's human." you introduced yourself trying to smile. From the circle, a hole was opened by entering an android, male with a green and a blue eye.
"What are you doing here?" he asked looking suspicious, at his side there were three other androids: one on his left and the other two on the right.
"Jerry, I came looking for him, I do not want to hurt you, I'm not even armed, I just want to see ... my boyfriend," you said while the last words were whispering.
The android looked at you, analyzing mayb,  you did not look at him in the face, afraid that he could kill you.
"Y/N, you're the florist working at the corner of the Baltimore Avenue and the Brush Street." he informed the other androids, causing them to back away and get them away from you.
"How do you know he's not a spy?" said an android wearing a hat and standing to his left.
"Because he worked with a Jerry, that Jerry is here with us, he would not risk his only love for greed of his race." he pointed out as he approached you.
"Plus he turned off the phone, if he was a spy he would have kept it on and the GPS on." He added at last, you immediately looked at the phone to see if it was really off.
"How..."
"I'm Markus, nice to meet you." interrupted the android, introducing himself. You looked at him, the android came up and introduced himself as North, the other two were Josh and Simon.
"I'm sorry, but you were a pretty dangerous intruder, anyway you come to Jerry," Markus said, putting himself in profile and pointing the way, you passed him while Simon and Josh remained in front of you.
You arrived in the widest part of the mecantry, there were many wounded androids, some others were laughing and joking as if the danger were not around the corner, two girls looked down and then there was one with a beret that did not seem to want to be seen. At one point, they accompanied you next to the sliding curtains, you noticed an android intent to put Thirium bags in place. When he looked up, you recognized Jerry and walked in against him, then holding him to you.
"Oh my God, you're here and you're alive." you said kissing his cheek, it's true that you knew he was here but you did not know if he was really there or another Jerry.
"Are you okay Jerry? Why do not you talk?"you asked worried, looking him in the eye but he looked in another direction, avoiding your look.
"You should not be here, you should be in Canada ... or somewhere else." he spoke in a low and serious tone.
"Oh shut up, I can watch my back for your information." you answered looking at the bags of thirium and touching them, annoying Jerry who was looking at you, as if you were mocking him:"Yes, of course." he said, taking the arms of androids and putting them in place, you understood what he meant:"They had surrounded those androids, I was simply unprepared, but I can defend myself."
"I will go out with you, I do not care about anything but I will do it with you." You added, looking at him in his green eyes. You sat in two fruit crates and held his hands smiling at him, you wanted to reassure him that everything would go well and gently caress the sea urchins. He kept smiling, while his LED was flashing blue. From the pocket you brought out a four-leaf clover, stored in a plasticized bookmark, you gave it to him in your hands.
When you touched his hands, a sense of fear began to flood you, you started to recall the day that you met him.
It was a terrible October rainy day of few years ago, you were arranging the last pots that had arrived to you by the noon courier, at one point the owner entered the shop with a rather strange boy, wore a cap on his head and a uniform to the strange.
"Oh, Y/N you're done with those pots," said the owner smiling, not angry but simply relieved and happy that you had finished that job for him. You approached to ask for the next task.
"Y/N he is Jerry, Jerry he is Y/N my aide, he is very good with the flowers and with the clientele I know you will get along." He bragged with the boy who kept smiling.
"I can handle it, Mrs. Borker knows, anyway, please Jerry." I held out my hand to tighten it. He looked at his hand in a strange way and you withdrew it, maybe he was a little shy so I turned my gaze to the lady.
"Excuse me, Mr. Y/S, but I'm not used to shaking hands with my superiors," the boy spoke in a rather mechanical tone.
"Superiors?" You asked confused, returning to observe him.
"Yes, I am an EM400 model, I belonged to the Pirates' Cove park and Mrs. Borker sent me back to Cyberlife to fill in my features and modify them for this type of job: client assistant," he explained, looking at you.
“I bought it before the park failed, do not worry it will not replace you. it's just to lighten the load.” she reassured you, walking away, meanwhile you looked at him intrigued by how he had defined you until recently.
"Hey man, you did not answer my question, I could be your own age, not superior ..." you started talking, you looked at the light on his temple and after a few minutes it started to blink and turn yellow.
".. so. Hey, are you listening to me?" you asked interrupting your speech, he continued to observe you, without talking to you and you worried about talking about it and getting close to him.
"Oh Christ, I think I broke it ..." yelled looking at him attentively.
"The reviews on this store are great, it will not be difficult to keep them high," he said suddenly, making you jump back from fear.
"Never do it again!" Screamed frightened as he laughed at your reaction.
“Jerry, I need you, can you come to help me with an android?" the silence broke Josh who had arrived and watched in silence until now. Jerry got up and put the four-leaf clover in his uniform pocket.
In the meantime, when they left, you also remembered your first kiss, under a mistletoe plant.
It was December 3 of a few years ago, you were helping Jerry put the plants in place on a shelf when you lost your balance from above the stairs.
You thought you would be dead or worse fired, because you would have dropped a beautiful Lady Slipper-Orchid plant on the floor and you would have somehow damaged it, closed your eyes to prepare for the impact with the floor, already hearing the words of the owner, when you heard two arms grab yourself. You opened your eyes slowly when I saw Jerry, all smiles, holding you in his arms.
But why are you smiling at me?-you thought, looking at him seriously and with a fucking orchid in your hand.
He gently handed your feet to the ground when your noses touched for a moment, at that moment something inside of you burst.
Something hot, sweet and strange, you had never experienced anything like that.
You approached Jerry more and at that moment kissed him softly, he took the flower from your hands and without breaking away from you, laid it on the table for the bouquets.
A shock of earthquake I bring you in the present, along with the cries of the escaping androids, you immediately decided to run away with them fearing for your life. During the escape noticed one of Jerry land on the ground, so Immediately you ran to him fearing it was your boyfriend's body.
"Jerry!" you screamed worried as you approached him to help him, but suddenly a bullet touched your cheek.
"Hands up!" A man shouted, you turned around to see who had fired, with his hands up, but I did not have time to turn that two Jerry attacked the two soldiers behind you, one of them was the person with whom you had talked before.
"Let's go or we will die." your lover announced, taking you by the arm and dragging you away. You started running with them, while you heard shots and shouts coming from all directions.
You were following Jerry and other androids, hoping to reach the bow or stern, wherever you could save. After a long run, you needed to stop and catch your breath, the two Jerry stopped together with you, meanwhile you were hearing the footsteps approaching you and ordered them: "Go away!" but they remained there as the steps approached.
"Jerry leave, I will join you at the end of the bridge." you reassured them touching to both of them, one of them escaped while your love didn’t move.
"Jerry, move or they'll catch you" you advised him, he began to run unconvincingly turned to you and you smiled at him and intimated him to continue, he decided to obey hoping he would see you again.
After having defended himself from the soldiers, you started running again, but you were too far from Jerry to reach them. So you went on a new road trying not to get caught by the soldiers, who shot at sight whoever suspected was an android.
You went down into the container depot following some androids, who had suggested you follow them for a second exit, when you arrived in the stern of the ship, where there was the bridge lowered to enter the ship.
"Stop or shoot!" Shouted the soldiers, you ignored them as they began to shoot, one by one the hit androids fell, while you continued to run without hesitation. You saw from a distance, Jerry waiting for you hidden between two deposits, started to run faster until a shot made you stop.
At that moment you felt a pain in the abdomen, you looked down on it and I saw a lot of blood come out. You kneel down, starting to cry not for the pain but for having had to abandon the Jerry so soon, or rather just a Jerry. After kneeling down, I fell to the ground, almost without force. I closed my eyes and abandoned you to your destiny. After a short time you felt your body leave earth, for a moment you thought you were dreaming so you opened your eyes and saw Jerry, who was transporting you.
"Hold on, Y/N, I'll take you away from here. We'll reach Canada and we'll live happily together." he cried, you stretched a hand towards his face and began stroking his cheeks, one at a time.
"Jerry, leave me here." you whispered while he kept walking toward abandoned cars. When he heard your voice, he stopped and kneeled approached your face to yours.
"I'm dying, it's useless you should save yourself." you revealed him, while he cried and denied with his head:"No, you will not die. We will go to Canada and ... we will be near a lake, you and us, like a big family."
Hearthbeat: 50 out of 100
"We will have dogs, I know you like many and even cats if you want." He continued while you watched him smile, but slowly you felt weaker and weaker.
Hearthbeat: 40 out of 100
"We can also have a garden with lots of flowers, so you can sell them and we can help you." He smiled at you, looking at you, you had your eyes closed to regain your energy but instead of keeping it, you felt weaker and weaker.
Heartbeat: 25 out of 100
"Jerry, I'm cold." you whispered before he could say something, he took off his jacket, which he had remedied before escaping from Jericho, and he covered you.
Heartbeat: 15 out of 100.
"I love you, I'm sorry to have ordered you to leave me but I couldn’t allow them to hurt you." you explained with tears in his eyes, he kissed you softly getting up and going to one of the cars.
When he reached it, was too late, because you had died from the hemorrhage in the abdomen, he called you a couple of times to wake you up but when he touched your skin, he realized that it was colder than his. He took your body and began to walk, to reach a place to bury you, a place worthy to bury you.
He walked for 4 hours, when he reached a small isolated park, where there were no games or anything else, but only some trees and some flowerbed that was covered by snow supported you on the ground and I look for something to dig with. He noticed a shed with some maintenance items for the park, took a shovel and looked for a suitable spot.
After a while and with tears in his eyes decided to bury you near a flower bed in the corner of the park, not to arouse suspicion. He began to dig and after making a hole not so deep, you bury.
Before covering you, however, it concerned the four-leaf clover that you gave him a few hours before and after having dried the tears and put the four-leaf clover where it was, you covered it. He left, to reach the border with Canada and start a new life.
He felt guilty for leaving you, but he felt more guilty for obeying you.

Potions for all afflictions, said the sign.
How is it that it was the first time he read it? He had no idea. It was there, in front of him, as clear as water. Right in the middle of the street he walked through every day to go to college. There, for everyone to see.
"Only visible to those who need it or know of its existence," Hoseok had recited.
Jimin didn’t want to believe him, but desperation made him try everything he could. Even if he still found himself reluctant to fully believe in the truthfulness of his friend's words.
"You look distressed, Chim," he said the evening before when his dance classes were over and everyone was preparing to go home.
Jimin sighed.
"It's nothing, Hobi-hyung," he replied, shaking his head and trying to give him a small smile. "I'm a little worried about final exams, that's all."
“Oh I see. You can’t focus?
“I can’t study! No matter how hard I try, nothing sticks!
“Have you tried paying for tutoring?” He suggested, really trying to help the frustrated teenager.
“I'm broke”
“Have you recorded yourself reading aloud and listened to the recording later?”
“I tried”
“Videos on YouTube?”
“Useless”
“Articles different from textbooks?”
“Boring”
"Hell, Jimin, you need urgent help”
An arm wrapped around the boy's shoulders suddenly, causing him to startle slightly.
“Hey, guys. What’s up?”
“Hey, Kookie. I'm just trying to help Chim with his studies”
"Oh, don’t bother," he added with an amused smile. "Jimin-hyung is a lost case in school”
“Funny. You use ‘hyung’ when you're insulting me, you brat”
“Oh, come on. We both know that studying isn’t really your thing, Chim. What you want is dancing, not study”
“But I can’t dance if I don’t graduate, Jungkook. The world isn’t that good with dreams” added the blond, dejected. Slowly, he was resigning to not graduate and never fulfil his dream of being a professional choreographer or instructor in a prestigious academy. He didn’t want to fail this year and repeat it. He only had one year of college left, he was so close and didn’t want to ruin it.
"Unless ..." Hoseok's tone was thoughtful, doubtful even. Enough to capture the attention of both maknaes.
“Hobi-hyung, I don’t think...” Jungkook intervened, but was interrupted.
"Unless...?" Jimin urged, eager to get a new alternative.
Hoseok took a few seconds where his frown only accentuated more and more. He seemed to have an internal conflict until, finally, he quickly shook his head.
“No, it's not a good idea. They’d kill me", he finished, picking up his backpack and placing it on his shoulder, ready to leave the studio. But Jimin was faster and took him by the arm to prevent him from escaping.
“Hobi-hyung, unless what? Please!” He begged,”I need to pass those exams! At this point, I’d try anything, if I'm being honest. Even witchcraft, if possible!”
The older boy raised an eyebrow, pleased by the attitude of his friend. Jimin thought it was strange, but he didn’t give up.
“Hyung, you shouldn’t...“, interjected the youngest, but no one let him finish.
“Well...” Hoseok started, already beginning to taste the amazement and surprise that the blond would have once he confirmed his next words. ”Some say that in the center of the pentacle, where the five elements come together, there is a curious place. Only visible to those who need it or know of its existence, invisible to the indiscreet eye. Find it, and your afflictions will be erased as much as you believe”
With this, he ran out of the room. Jimin tried to follow him and shout his name to stop him, but as soon as he set foot in the street, Hoseok disappeared from his sight.
“What’s that supposed to mean? “Jungkook came to his side, looking at the empty street and with a nervous look. Jimin shrugged.
“I don’t have time for riddles. I need to study." He returned to the interior of the room to gather his things and went back out.
“You're right. You should concentrate on your studies, and not waste your time with nonsense“, commented Jungkook walking beside him. “Try to sleep this night, okay? You need to get some rest.”
The blond nodded slowly, accepting his friend's suggestion.
That night, when he got home, he barely greeted Taehyung and went to his room without even taking a shower. He turned on his computer and opened the internet browser. The first word he typed was "pentacle," followed by "the five elements."
That night, he learned about witchcraft and spirits. He looked for maps of his city, places in downtown Seoul that might look like something to help him, he even learned a little about magick.
That night, he found a map of Seoul on a pentacle. And right in the center of it, the ruined building surrounded by large stores and houses. Every day he walked by that street, he knew that building. Would he have to go there if he wanted to get answers?
That night he went to bed with doubt.
That night he went to bed with determination.
And there it was, in front of the ruined building.
Actually, he was in front of something entirely different, something that was never there.
In front of him, a house stood. A worn, old wooden house, it looked like it had at least two floors. A smoking fireplace on the top of the roof and on the porch, a garden. The greenest and most colorful garden Jimin had ever seen. Flowers of all colors, vines that climbed the walls and curl up in the white wooden fence that surrounds the garden. The windows of the house are opened, the wind causes the red curtains inside to dance at its slow rythm.
The house was picturesque, homely even. Jimin ventures with parsimony to cross the street and opens the fence’s door. It grinds slowly and the boy is almost afraid to break the calm that reigns in the place.
He walks the path in the middle of the garden. There are plants and flowers that he has never seen, and he can swear he sees a flower move. He even feels that some flowers follow his steps with caution.
He climbs the three steps that lead to the porch of the house and carefully opens the door, from which hangs a kind of amulet; a bell announces his arrival and Jimin fears what he could find inside. After all, he's still a bit skeptical about all this. A rural house in the middle of the city? Where it’s supposed to be a ruined building? Just like that? He’s not buying it.
Still, he focuses on looking around. The place is even more picturesque inside. But he’s slightly frightened when he notices a steaming cauldron over a slow fire. The substance inside looks thick, purple and smells of lavender. Next to it, a lectern with a large open book stood. That book had yellowed pages, it looked like it was about to fall apart. Even the leather cover was torn.
Continuing his inspection, he notices even more plants covering the walls and the shelves full of bottles, bottles and books of all shapes and sizes. In the containers there are herbs, liquids that Jimin had never seen and other things he didn’t recognize (are those... bones?)
Candles lit and of different colors and sizes adorned almost every corner of the room. He could see another shelf full of old books. Large and small, thick and thin, mostly dark colors and with the appearance of being hundreds of years old. And infinite knowledge.
In the remaining places there were amulets, artifacts, quills, a skull in that corner, a broom in the other? An altar in the background?
The walls were covered with posters and photographs. The phases of the moon, deities that he didn’t know, a picture of the human anatomy and the chakras? Types of auras? Uses of different herbs?, common potions... He even found a totally black poster with the words "Baddest witch in town" in white and in the style of American Horror Story.
And in the center of everything, a counter. In the showcase there were smaller flasks, amulets, necklaces, bracelets, rings, statuettes, small bottles, envelopes, candles, boxes whose contents were unknown...
On the counter, a Ouija board, tarot cards, another quill, a notebook that looked very messy and with many separators of different colors. The leather cover was black, but discolored by use and had a symbol that he didn’t recognize. Jimin was especially curious about this notebook, so he approached it and extended an arm with the intention of running through it, but something stopped him.
Someone else took the notebook quickly before he could even touch it.
“Never touch the Book of Shadows of a witch! Don’t you have manners?" An unusually low male voice exclaimed, startling the boy.
When Jimin looked up, the air in his lungs decided to leave him.
A young man with light pink hair was standing in front of him. He was frowning, his thin lips formed a straight line, playing gently with the ring in a piercing and his bangs fell over his forehead. His dark, catlike eyes regarded him with anger and curiosity. A pointed hat that contrasted with the paleness of his porcelain skin covered his hair. However, he seemed blushed by some kind of effort or exercise, as he was sweating. He also noticed more piercings in his ears and a small scar that crossed the bridge of his nose. As for his clothes, they seemed perfectly normal. A black shirt under a denim overall. Plastic boots equally black and in his hands, green gardening gloves full of dirt and mud.
The blond swallowed hard.
“Excuse me, it wasn’t my intention! I just...!
“A human? You’re a human?
Jimin blinked and tilted his head slightly, not quite understanding the attractive stranger's question.
“Yes? Shouldn’t I be? Aren’t you human?
“I mean, yes. But you're a… normal human.
The pink-haired stranger turned around and positioned himself behind the counter, placing the notebook on it and glancing at Jimin cautiously. He took off his gloves slowly, shaking them a little and leaving them next to the notebook. That's when he realized that the sorcerer's arms were covered with strange symbols, like tattoos.
"You're not?" The blond finally asked.
The sorcerer let out a laugh and gave him a funny look.
“I don’t know if you noticed, but this place in general isn’t quite... normal” there was a silence of a few seconds in which Jimin didn’t know what to say. He just babbled some answers until he was interrupted. "How did you get into my store, anyway?"
“Through the door?
The stranger sighed.
“I mean... How was it that you could see it?
“Well... I just stood in front and there it was. Although yesterday morning the building was in ruins...” he added, still confused and surprised.
“Did anyone tell you about this place?” He slowly walked around the store, going to the steaming cauldron and taking a wooden spoon, slowly stirring the substance inside.
“Er... yes, a friend” he tried to follow the stranger, but his foot was stuck with a carpet that he had not seen before. When he looked down, he found a large pentacle on the ground. Almost afraid, he decided to go around the carpet and continue talking.
“What friend? What's their name?” He asked as he sniffed cautiously at the smoke coming from the cauldron.
“Hoseok? “Jimin was still trying to assimilate what was happening. Was he really in the presence of a sorcerer? Was that real
“Ugh, Hoseok. I swear that one day I will cut off those horrendous wings that he shows off so proudly”
The boy didn’t know how to answer, so he remained silent. Wings? The questions only accumulated in his head, and he wasn’t sure he wanted to hear all the answers.
“Namjoon, fetch me the strawberry extract!”
He didn’t expect such a mysterious potion to have strawberry but hey, did anything make sense since he arrived?
“Uncle Joonie isn’t here, daddy”
Jimin turned on his heels to meet a girl. A seven-year-old looking girl, curly hair and black as tar, dark skin like sweet chocolate and dark eyes like bitter chocolate approached them happily. The combination of her eyes, her hair and her skin caught his attention. Everything about her gave an air of darkness, but her gaze was what contrasted. Her eyes had that air of innocence and tranquility that children had. She even made him feel calm. She wore a light green dress with white sleeves and white tennis shoes.
The stranger's face softened completely, surprising Jimin, and he approached her.
“Where could your uncle have gone?”
"He said he had to talk to Uncle Jinnie" The girl shrugged, pouting.
The sorcerer squatted in front of her to meet her eyes and take her little hands in his.
“Hey, little bugger, don’t be sad. Uncle Joonie will be back soon, okay?” The sorcerer's hands were large, Jimin could see, and seeing one of them perch gently on the girl's cheek made his hand appear larger than normal, but with a touch of sweetness. The blond almost melts in his place. “Meanwhile,” he continued, “why don’t you go and see if the mandrakes already bloomed?”
The girl's spirits rose immediately and she nodded hurriedly to run out of a back door that Jimin hadn’t noticed. Then, the sorcerer disappeared through the same door only to return seconds later with a vial in his hands. He opened it and added a few drops of the liquid to his cauldron. The color of the substance changed immediately to a pale pink and with a strong smell of bitter chocolate that Jimin loved.
"Don’t even think of approaching that, mortal," the stranger warned. The boy realized that he had taken two steps towards the cauldron. “It's a very strong love potion, we don’t want you to fall madly in love with me.
‘I could do it without the help of a potion,’ he thought to himself, but immediately scolded himself when he realized his instincts. The smell of that potion surely had influenced something.
“Well, I guess you didn’t come to pry. Since you’re an ordinary human, I’m gonna give you special treatment. How can I help you on this beautiful Saturday morning?”
He seemed to notice a tone of sarcasm, but couldn’t assure it one hundred percent. So he shook his nerves and focused on what he really came to do.
“I need to pass my final exams. And Hobi-hyung said that my afflictions would disappear.”
“As much as you believe. It’s not up to me, but you. I can help you, but you’ll do most of the work.”
“What do you mean?”
“You have to believe that magick will work. Tell me, Jimin, do you believe in magick?
The blond was left stunned. He had never mentioned his name and the sorcerer's penetrating gaze made him nervous. He didn’t know what to answer, but it was definitely not a negative response. It was something like an act of faith. He wanted to believe firmly in magick, and he had had enough proof that it existed.
“Yes”
“Then let's get to work. Give me a few minutes and I'll give you your potion. Wait over there.” He pointed to a place where sofas were located and which he hadn’t seen. Jimin obeyed as he watched the stranger walk away towards the back door, but stopped a few seconds. "My name is Yoongi, by the way. It's a pleasure to meet you, Jimin," and disappeared through the door.
Jimin still had questions, but he no longer felt the urge to get answers. So he obeyed and went to wait on the sofas that the wizard –Yoongi– had mentioned.
In this space of the store, three dark sofas were arranged around a coffee table. On this, teacups, spoons, a container with sugar inside and another with various tea bags. Jimin sat up to examine a cup and as soon as he touched one of them, it filled itself with hot water. He almost dropped the cup but he was faster, only a few drops spilled.
He settled down to prepare tea, searching among the flavors of the envelopes when he was interrupted.
“You don’t want the chamomile one. Peppermint tea will help you calm your aura”
Jimin met those deep eyes and curly hair once more. He gave the girl a sweet smile and took a mint tea.
“Thanks for the suggestion”
"It was nothing." He shrugged. "Daddy says peppermint tea helps relax uneasy auras”
The girl sat next to him, swinging her feet which didn’t touch the ground.
“My aura is uneasy?” He took a sip of tea and instantly felt a wave of peace wash over him.
"That's better," he said with a smile. "I like to see the blue auras.
“Auras exist?”
“Uh huh. My dad taught me to see them. Although I can only see those that are very strong. But I'm still practicing!”
The child's enthusiasm caused a warmth in him, even though he had no idea what she was talking about.
"You're the first mortal human to come to our store." The girl tilted her head, examining him with eyes full of curiosity; then she smiled and suddenly the room seemed brighter. "My name is Yujin”
“A pleasure, Yujin. I’m Jimin”
They shook hands and let go, but Yujin had his eyes glued to him.
“Daddy says that mortals are dangerous. That I shouldn’t get too close to them”
“Oh yeah? And why’s that?”
“Because...”
“Yujin, your uncles are here!” He heard the sorcerer's voice and like a power button, Yujin ran to the counter, where a Russian blue cat was sitting, swinging its tail and looking around with yellow and calculating eyes. Next to the sorcerer was another man, tanned-skinned, with lilac hair and taller than the other. He also wore a pointed hat and Jimin could notice dimples when he smiled occasionally at the cat.
“Uncle Joonie, Uncle Jinnie! You’re here!” the youngest was running to the arms of the man, who picked her up and spun a little before placing her on the floor again. They both laughed, happy to see each other again.
“But I didn’t leave for a long time, little cockroach. I promised you I’d be back soon”
“But I missed you. And you too, Uncle Jinnie!”
And just like that, out of nowhere and in front of Jimin's astonished eyes, the cat jumped off the counter, but instead of falling on all fours, it fell in two, and turned into a human. A human with two legs, two arms and without a tail.
"My princess, I missed you too." He also carried the girl, putting her weight on his right hip and holding her with both hands. He had brown hair and on the bridge of his nose rested a pair of spectacles. His skin seemed strangely perfect and soft and his lips were fleshy.
The blond, speechless, remained in place, without moving a muscle. Knowing a sorcerer in a day was one thing, but two sorcerers and a shapeshifter? He wasn’t sure if he would breathe anytime soon.
"I forgot to mention, Jin-hyung, there’s a mortal in the store," Yoongi added, gesturing to him.
Four faces turned towards him, looking at him as if he was the weird one. He felt self-conscious, wanted to disappear in his seat, but then, the pink-haired sorcerer gave him a half smile and approached him to hand him a little bottle with a yellowish liquid. It almost looked like... pee.
“Take a sip before each exam. This will remind you of what you have studied or read, without having to learn every word. But remember to believe in magick, otherwise, it won’t work. Don’t drink more than a short sip, okay? It could cause you problems...
The boy took the bottle with shaking hands and nodded slowly.
“Take it, free of charge. It seems you need to rest your mind, kid”
After some babbling, Jimin managed to get out an awkward thanks.
“Thank you, sorcerer-ssi”
He let out a sarcastic laugh.
“I'm a witch, you ass”
A few seconds after the mortal got out the door, Hoseok came running, desperate and stamped his hands on the counter.
“Yoongi-hyung, I have to tell you something!”
“It doesn’t have anything to do with a mortal knowing the existence of my store, does it?” Yoongi calmly cleaned his dagger, paying attention to his reflection on the fine metal.
“Yes! How did you…? Oh...”
"You're in trouble, hyung," laughed the dimpled witch.

Tuesday-Thursday, 17-19 November
Tuesday
We finally tracked down where the leak was occurring under the sink and simply tightening up one joint fixed it.  We still left the cupboard empty for a couple of days to ensure the leak was properly fixed but it all looked good so we repacked all our gear back in.
I gave the car a bit of a wash too.  We had driven through several hordes of little insects in the past few days and there were millions of tiny, squashed carcases splattered over the windscreen and the lights making driving difficult.  We were not supposed to wash cars in the park but I hosed it down roughly and used some soapy water and the broom to remove a few zillion bugs.
We did another few bucket-loads of washing too – about the same as yesterday.  There wasn’t really enough to make it worthwhile using the washing machines in the park so we used our special manual washing machine. It works quite well for clothes and smaller things, but not for bedlinen or towels.
We went for a drive but called in at the shops on our way out of town to get a few odds and ends and to restock our hayfever remedies (none of which worked particularly well). We went east as far as we could – got to Lightning Crossing, but the road was closed there (as in many places) due to the NSW lockout so we backtracked through pretty Towong and Tintaldra where we ate lunch beside the Murray and had quite a long walk along the track, spying numerous birds for me and not a few plants for Heather to photograph and identify.
We drove on to Walwa and then south to Shelley where there was supposed to be a walk through the Flora Reserve.  We found the sign for the Reserve, but there certainly wasn’t any track to follow.  It was all long grass and very overgrown so even finding the track was impossible – although we drove past a couple of days later to see that it had all been mown and that may have uncovered some semblance of a track.
At night we watched the last two episodes of Justified.  I really enjoyed it!  It was easy to follow and I had little trouble hearing and interpreting the dialogue – my poor hearing and the rapid heavily-accented voices often leave me comprehending no more than about a third of the dialogue in most programs – no wonder I often need Heather to explain the plot to me.  But Justified was good.  It was easy to tell the black hats from the white hats.  It was quite funny in places and although the baddies must have killed hundreds in the series, they were nearly all quick, clean deaths like in the good old Westerns I grew up with.  The hero was a bit naughty a lot of the time, but he was a John Wayne type of tough guy and you can’t wish for better than that!
Wednesday
We started with a long walk along the roadside path towards Corryong.  We only went about halfway and then returned, but it was enjoyable and we saw a few new birds along the way.  We then set out east again in the car – yesterday, we went north-east, today, it was south-east.  We went to Towong Upper (which is quite a few kilometres lower than Towong!) and on to Biggera (a much smaller locality!).  We crossed a bridge at one stage and drove for several kilometres until we came to another bridge that took us back into Victoria - to the road we had already travelled on.  That was when we discovered that we had been driving in NSW – quite illegal of course, but with no signage, no roadblocks, no policing, we were just innocently enjoying the scenery.  A little later though, we quite consciously breached the border again to take a couple of photos of the upper Murray River from the middle of another small bridge – at least a metre or two inside the State border.
It was a bit like hillbilly country in that tiny corner of the Victoria where the roads simply terminate at a farm gate – very remote and rustic, pretty rundown, but still sporting plenty of pretty scenery.
We returned home via Thowgla and Nariel Creek.  The road to Nariel Creek was a ripper, very scenic, but quite long and very rough in places.  I wondered if we were ever going to get there but my brilliant navigator assured me that it was only another 30, 20, 15, 10....... clicks to go and sure enough, just when I was starting to wane, Nariel Creek appeared on the far horizon.
Thursday
We visited some of the same places we had seen before, but it was a lovely drive today. We went to Walwa via Cudgewa and Tintaldra and it was a great scenic drive.  Mainly pastoral country but quite hilly in places and I enjoyed a pleasant feeling of isolation for some reason.  There were few other cars, but the area is quite pretty and I thoroughly enjoyed it.  Driving along the Murray is always a joy, but particularly so in the north-east.  The river expands broadly across the countryside in many places and it is alive with birdlife, including thousands of pelicans.
From Walwa, we drove south again to Shelley and on to Keotong and the Mt Lawson National Park.  It was quite a long drive to the Mt Lawson Summit where we did a relatively short walk.  It was called a walk, but it was essentially a steep climb up a rough track followed by a scramble across a stony area complete with huge boulders.  Our sticks were a boon, especially on the rocks, but there were lots of wildflowers to look at and it was interesting to be walking on bare rock with dense forest surrounding us just below.  Heather didn’t climb the last couple of hundred metres, but I pushed on to the summit with the promise of spectacular views.  I agree that the views across the mountains and valleys would have been great if only someone had cut down half the trees obscuring the view.  I could see the potential of the area, but there was no way to take a decent photo through all the trees surrounding the rocks.
We drove halfway back down the hill to the start of another walk to The Spa.  This was a fairly long walk, seemingly all uphill, and getting steeper the further we walked.  There were lots of big puddles to avoid but quite a few birds and plenty of plants and flowers to look at while we paused more frequently to catch our breath.  We reached a particularly steep section and Heather decided not to go any further but being a tough John Wayne type, I soldiered on another few hundred metres or so.  It was so steep that it nearly killed me!  Just around the next corner of the ascent, I eventually reached a sign that pointed to The Spa - straight down a precipitous track that would give pause (hooves?) to a mountain goat.  I could have simply launched myself over the side and I would have ended up in the river, probably missing The Spa on the way, and my corpse would have floated down quite close to the car, but I remembered Heather patiently waiting for me along the track so gave the more adventurous route a miss and retraced my steps back to her.  I had to rest a while before starting the trek back to the car, but there were plenty of birds and flowers to look at, so we returned very slowly (and exhaustedly) back to the car.
We had intended doing another walk after this, but by now, we were pretty buggered and the one we looked at was closed anyway so we just headed for home.
Returning to the caravan park, it was pretty disappointing to find ourselves completely surrounded by five other caravans who were travelling together.  The morons running the park had allocated them sites that completely surrounded us and they had set themselves up so close to us that it was obviously designed to intimidate us.  One van was parked sideways across three sites, less than a metre behind us, and the others were at the very edge of their sites with their communal area right outside our door.  All this notwithstanding that there were at least a dozen, probably two dozen, other places they could have been allocated around the extensive park that wouldn’t have impacted us at all.  Even just setting them all up on one side or the other of us would have been fine rather than hemming us in so tightly.  Talk about circling the wagons…..

Drinker's Dictionary Defined - What Does It All Mean?
Tumblr media
200+ Intoxicating Expressions Meaning Drunk
Ben Franklin published a list of 229 dictionary words, slang definitions and phrases synonymous with being intoxicated in the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1737.† Like similar inebriated sayings used today, these idioms contain a mixture of condemnation and humor to describe being groggy.
The phrases in the dictionary are not borrowed from foreign languages... but gathered wholly from the modern tavern conversation of tipplers.
~ Ben Franklin
However, only one expression actually mentions a tavern and none use ‘bar’ or public house a.k.a ‘pub’ as a reference. That time period reflects the terms used in the second part of the description in the title: America Walks into a Bar: A Spirited History of Taverns and Saloons, Speakeasies and Grog Shops.
Drinkers Dictionary
Here's all of the saucy synonyms for sloshed used during American colonial times that Ben Franklin collected and compiled for printing in his revolutionary newspaper. Many are still popular tippling terms now.
Ever wonder where all these words, idioms and assorted jargon came from?
The history behind the vocabulary of many of these spirited sayings is documented below. Some are fairly obvious, while others need further research.
We'll keep you posted. Enjoy!

* - This misquote is from a letter Franklin wrote to Abbe Morellet where he talks about the rain from heaven watering the vineyards down below which then leads to the grapes changing to wine. Although not verbatim, the rest of the quote is accurate. Guess the analogy became popular because its easier to fit on a tee shirt.
