If you lived in Bikini Bottom, would you befriend Spongebob or Plankton? Obviously Spongebob. I’m there to have a good time and catch jellyfish, not eat holographic meatloaf and make it my life’s goal to steal a secret formula. Do you have any bananas in your house right now? I think we still have some left. My dad bought a pack? a group? a bunch? of them so he can make banana cue and turon for my mom and sister while we’re all stuck at home for the meantime. Which overrated tattoo are you sick of seeing? Eh I don’t judge this easily since I assume tattoos mean a lot to people but where I’m from, line tattoos are pretty overused. They DO look nice and I get why they’ve been trending for a while, but yeah they’re evvvvvverywhere. Is it easy to distract you? Yes haha I have a rather quick attention span. Do you prefer to drink from glasses or mugs? Depends on the drink. I drink my water from a glass but I prefer my coffee in a mug, that sort of thing.
What was the last thing you taught a younger kid? I don’t feel confident teaching kids just yet, huhu. It usually works the other way around: when I’m with kids, they teach me how to play their toys or whatever game they’re playing on their parents’ phone/iPad. Are the clocks in your house mostly digital or analog? We only have one analog clock. We mostly tell the time from our phones. How long have you had your television(s)? Answered this before but we have two TVs that are 12 years old and two others that were bought within the last decade. Do you like watching movies made with CGI or do you prefer hand-drawn ones? I don’t care. As long as the end product is done well I can enjoy the movie. Where did your parents buy their car(s)? I know for sure the two family cars were bought directly from the official dealers. I think mine was a secondhand one. Do you know why your grandparents chose your mother's name? No. I think they just liked the name. That makes me want to ask my grandma though. What is your favourite kind of soup? Miso is the only one I really like. Have you ever made your own musical instrument? Nope. What do you think of Leighton Meester's singing voice? I only know one song of hers and I reeeeeally loved that when it came out, but I don’t think it’s enough for me to have an opinion for her music altogether. I definitely don’t hate her voice though. Do you think you'd do well at teaching the English language to a foreigner? Yeah, it’s my other everyday language and I’m a little bit more fluent in it than I am in Filipino. How long have your neighbours lived there? About the same time as us, I think. We all moved in at sort of the same time when the village was newly developed. Is it weird to hear your name in movies or TV shows? It’s not a very common name so it does feel a bit weird to hear, yes. It’s weirder if I have to refer to the character in third person cause I never liked saying my own name :/ Why do so many people seem to hate the Jonas Brothers? Am assuming this refers to the Jonas Brothers pre-reunion because I’m sure no one hates them and their new music now lmao. I think, simply put, it was because they were teenagers then, and pre-teen and teenage girls was their main fanbase? Most people liked to shit on that category of celebrities, even today – case in point, Justin Bieber, 5SOS, One Direction haha. What is a store you like that is exclusive to your country? Fully Booked! It’s the most complete, up-to-date, and chic bookstore brand we have. The Fully Booked branch in BGC in particular is a partnership with Starbucks, so you can immediately walk over there to get a coffee and read after buying a book heh. If you attend school, what time do you usually get home after? I always have extracurriculars like org stuff, meetings, or fieldwork after my academic schedule so more often than not I’ll get home by 9 or 10 PM, which leaves me feeling exhausted as fuck at the end of the day. When was the last time you really needed to just let loose? Like two weeks ago? I was bored out of my mind being stuck at home so I chugged a lot of soju that I asked my dad to buy so I can at least be drunk while being bored lol. Have you ever been blackmailed? Kinda. There was a time when I didn’t talk to my sister and didn’t really feel well enough to reconcile with her yet, but my mom threatened to go to our class guidance counselor and expose me and ‘the kind of older sister I am’ if I didn’t make amends with my sister immediately.
This might sound sarcastic but thanks, survey, for reminding me what kind of mom my mother actually was during the years that were the most critical to my development lmao. I always need reminders like this because despite how our relationship has ‘improved’ now that I’m older, I shouldn’t forget the trauma she caused me and the fact that I had always planned to detach myself from her as much as possible once I’m fully independent. I can’t disappoint my younger self by keeping her in my life as if nothing happened.
Do you suffer from Restless Leg Syndrome? No. I keep forgetting what that means. Would you rather have novels based on your life or a series of comic books? Novels, so I’d be more interested to read it. Have you written a resume before, either for yourself or someone else? I did a resumé when I applied for my internship. Did you know that they plan on releasing a movie based on The Smurfs? This survey is sooooooo old hah they’ve made a bunch of films on it already. Do you ever wonder what it would be like to live underwater? Not really. Mostly I’ve just wondered what it would be like to be a creature from the deep sea, where it’s totally dark and most of the animals there look prehistoric as fuck lol. Have you ever worked in a bakery? If not, would you like to? No but this question reminded me of Harry Styles, aw :’) ANYWAY if I did I’d probably take up a job in the office, since I can neither bake nor deal with people on a regular basis even if one argues that bakeries aren’t really particular spots for angry Karens or Barbaras. What is your favourite thing about snow? I like that we don’t get them because it’s bound to make my first encounter with snow in the future magical as fuck. Is there a big personality difference between you and your sibling(s)? Yeah. I tend to adapt to new environments way better than they do and I’m definitely the most extroverted of the three in all aspects.  Do you enjoy decorating things with stickers? Hahahah yes, it’s an uncontrollable urge. I keep my stickers to just my laptop case these days, but back then I used to put stickers on my phone case, my ID case, clipboard, wallet, etc. Did you lose anything recently? Did you end up finding it? I lose my hair tie every now and then; my hair’s a bit short for a ponytail now so my hair tie gradually slips out my hair with me barely noticing it, so it always ends up in random places around the house. I do end up finding it after a while but it gets frustrating whenever I realize it had fallen off again. What colour oven mitts do you have? We don’t really use the oven so we barely use the ones we have. I don’t even know the color of it.
Why do you/don't you watch award shows? Because there are sooo many commercials in the middle of it, some presenters are awkward as fuck and I’d rather save myself from the secondhand cringe, and most of the time the choices for the winners are undeserving and end up pissing everyone off. It’s always easier to just wait a few hours and check the results on Google; and besides, the only fun parts are seeing what everyone is wearing and who attends to begin with hah. What do you think of Ellen DeGeneres as the new judge on American Idol? God this was a lifetime ago. I think I mostly didn’t mind it but I never did get over the replacement of the OGs Randy, Simon, and Paula. Do you ever do the exercises featured in some magazines? No. Have you ever watched What The Buck? What do you think of it? I don’t think I’ve heard of that. How long ago did you switch from cable to satellite, if you did? We didn’t make a ‘switch,’ per se. We had cable in our old home but when we moved to our current house in 2008, having extra channels wasn’t really the priority as moving already entailed a whole lot of expenses to begin with. That meant we only had free TV for a while which was extremely fucking boring, but eventually my dad got us satellite in like 2011 or 2012. When was the last time you partnered up with someone to complete something? I decided to partner up with Andrew for my undergraduate thesis in like August last year. Do you consider Lady GaGa's appearance artistic, or just plain weird? Artistic. What do you usually do when you have trouble sleeping? I put a lengthy YouTube video on so I can fall asleep to the background noise. At least that’s what I do these days - I always thought I needed complete silence to fall asleep, but apparently that’s not the absolute case. What was the last thing you used scissors for? I opened a sachet of 3-in-1 coffee.
Have you ever used some kind of food as a facial mask? Nah I always just use Korean sheet masks. How many USB cords do you have lying around? I personally don’t have any but I do have a hard drive. Are you satisfied with your social life (or lack thereof)? I’m very satisfied with it and I’m glad I got to open up in college. Do you know anybody whose initials spell something? Sure. What is your favourite flavour of Kool-Aid? I’ve never had Kool-Aid. Is there a specific food you think NEEDS to be at Christmas dinner? My grandma’s steak. Would you be able to re-string a guitar? I wouldn’t even know where to buy guitar strings. What TV show do you just assume you wouldn't like? How I Met Your Mother, just because their fans love to make fun of and compare their oh-so-great show to Friends so much when I’ve never seen a single Friends fan make fun of HIMYM like ????? Why the one-sided, unsolicited hate??? I was always planning to watch the show and appreciate Friends and HIMYM at the same time but because the fans are so pathetic I just stopped wanting to watch it altogether. Do your friends have more money than you? Seems unfair to pit ourselves against one another when we’re all still depending on our parents’ money lmao. Who always has the power to make you feel intimidated? Ate Frances has always had a very strong personality. Do you have more bread or cheese in your house? Bread. What was the last movie trailer you saw? Not sure. I don’t really like trailers since most of them give away too much of the plots already. Did you purchase any meat product when you were at the store last? My dad did. Have you ever been told that you have chubby cheeks? Well I don’t, so no I’m not usually told this lol. Do you know how to properly use a saw? Nope. Isn't it a shame that what Kanye West did at the VMA's overshadowed what was supposed to be a night dedicated to Michael Jackson? Hahahaha not really, I found it hilarious and so so stupid. There were a billion other tributes to MJ that year that went smoothly so it doesn’t really matter to me if the 2009 VMAs will always be known as the Imma-let-you-finish VMAs.

Question thingy cos I’m procrastinating going to bed which I will be heavily regretting at 7:30 when I have to get up for class but yolo
Spotify, SoundCloud, or Pandora?  I don’t really use any of them tbh, like, I like to have all of my music in iTunes/on my phone - but if I ever stream music it’s actually normally on YouTube.
is your room messy or clean?  Right now it’s very messy, I was supposed to clean it days ago but I’m lazy.
what color are your eyes?  Blue.
do you like your name? why?  I’ve always been indifferent to it - or, really, it’s that depersonalised feel where I tell people my name is Christina and I answer to Christina but when I start to think about it, say it out loud slowly and mindfully, it feels like a foreign object in my mouth.  So I try not to do that because that’s uncomfortable as fuck.  But anyway, yeah, indifferent, but ever since I learned about Christina Mirabilis and how much she has come to mean to me, it’s better, like, it feels like fate I guess.  If such a thing exists, which is another thing I am ambivalent about.
what is your relationship status?  extremely single so if anyone wants to take one for the team and date me, that would be swell.
describe your personality in 3 words or less?  neurotic, means well.
what color hair do you have?  purple
what kind of car do you drive? colour?  sadly I do not have a car, but I do have a scooter, it’s silver.
where do you shop?  like, as in where do I buy my groceries?  Haha lmao but honestly this is so vague.  Bitch I’m poor and fat, I shop anywhere where I can find something that doesn’t look completely hideous and that my card won’t get declined trying to buy.
how would you describe your style?  see above.  Would like to dress way cooler than I do but lack of money, and - more importantly, since thrift shops are a thing when you’re skinny - being fat.
favorite social media account? Tumblr I guess, even though it’s often incredibly frustrating, because Facebook is a shitstain on the fabric of humanity and I don’t have Twitter and rarely use Instagram.
what size bed do you have?  double.
any siblings?  little sister, she’s 25, lives in Melbourne.
if you can live anywhere in the world where would it be? why?  somewhere that is perpetually warm, where I can speak the language well enough to practice as a clinical psychologist, but still in a big city - I’m thinking either Sydney or Queensland, or California.  South of France would be fucking lit too, I guess I know enough French that I could become fluent with total immersion.  Anyway, I just want to be warm year-round, seasonal depression always kicks my ass, I fucking loathe being cold.
favorite snapchat filter?  fuck man I don’t know, I don’t remember the last time I used a snapchat filter.
favorite makeup brand(s)  depends on which type of makeup, I have different favourite brands for different products.  But, generally, cheap, I guess.  Although my two favourite makeup items are an eyeshadow that I got from Topshop, and a Makeup Revolution highlight.
how many times a week do you shower?  most days.
favorite tv show?  that is a really difficult question, I have so many favourites.  Right now it’s Game of Thrones, obviously.  But I think Dollhouse is possibly my all-time favourite TV show.  And right now I’m watching Vikings, which I’m fucking loving, just finished the second season.  Although HONESTLY I don’t give a fuck about Princess Aslaug, when the fuck are Ragnar and Lagertha gonna get back together because Lagertha is my fucking bae.
shoe size?  normally 7 or 8 in NZ sizes, or 38EU.
how tall are you?  5′2″ of pure queer fury.
sandals or sneakers?  docs.
do you go to the gym?  lmao.
describe your dream date?  I’ve done this before but basically - luxury version with the girl I’m in love with involves long extended holiday wandering around the Mediterranean and just having lazy days of eating and napping and swimming and having sex and exploring and shopping. Other than that, I just really love to go to an outdoor bar on a warm summer’s afternoon and have sangria or margaritas or wine and antipasto or tapas, and just chill and chat, and maybe have a sneaky cigarette.  just, like, yeah.  perfect.
how much money do you have in your wallet at the moment?  none, I don’t carry cash most of the time.
what color socks are you wearing?  grey with black polka dots, with a rabbit on each, they used to have pom poms on them for the rabbit’s tale but they’ve long since disintegrated.
how many pillows do you sleep with?  I sleep on one pillow but I have another one on the other side of my bed.
do you have a job? what do you do?  I am a supervisor in a bookstore.
how many friends do you have?  I don’t know off the top of my head, I’m not inclined to sit here and count them.
whats the worst thing you have ever done?  taken my pain out on my own body rather than directing my anger at the people who hurt me.
whats your favorite candle scent?  I don’t know but Sophie got me this Limoncello-scented one from Bath and Body Works in Vancouver but it’s humungous and heavy as fuck so she couldn’t afford to send it to me but I hope maybe when she eventually comes back she’ll bring it with her because I think that would be my favourite scent.
3 favourite boy names?  I don’t know, honestly, I don’t often think about boy names, I guess cos I’m fucking gay as shit so boys never cross my mind in any capacity.  But I like Elliott.  But I also like that name for a girl so idk,
3 favourite girl names?  I have heaps but the first three that spring to mind are Anneke, Rhiannon, and Sinead.
favorite actor?  don’t know tbh.  Probably Harrison Ford as Han Solo, cos he’s my son.
favorite actress?  a hard choice but Emilia Clarke is the one I crush on the hardest so yeah idk.
who is your celebrity crush?  who ISN’T?  I swear I’m in love with half the women in music and film.  Emilia Clarke is a big one, obviously, but also at the moment I’m crushing mega hard on Tash Sultana.
favorite movie?  I don’t know, I’ll just say Amélie because that film never fails to cheer me up.
do you read a lot? what’s your favourite book?  I do read a lot, and I have no fucking idea.
money or brains?  In a partner?  Brains, I guess, although that’s very subjective, given Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences - I guess it depends on what you value.  I, personally, value emotional intelligence.
do you have a nickname? what is it?  Stina.
how many times have you been to the hospital?  Uhhh.  I don’t know off the top of my head, and I probably can’t count accurately because there are a few admissions that I just straight up don’t remember.  At least 10 times, I would say.
top 10 favourite songs?  nah, that’s too hard.
do you take any medications daily?  yeah, I take sertraline (anti-depressant), prazosin (alpha-blocker - for PTSD), and birth control (for PCOS).  I also take magnesium and vitamin D because they’re both fucking lifesaving tbh.
what is your skin type? (oily, dry, etc)  I don’t know.  All I know is that it never fucking does what I want it to.
what is your biggest fear?  The people I love dying, especially my close family.
how many kids do you want?  more than one but no more than three.
whats your go to hair style?  down.  I always wear it down.  I have a pretty large side-undercut, so.
what type of house do you live in? (big, small, etc)  The house itself is really big, it’s an old villa, but it’s divided into two flats, we’re on the bottom floor.  It isn’t huge, we have a tiny lounge, a slightly-larger-than-average kitchen, and average-sized bathroom/laundry - but our rooms are all fucking humungous.
who is your role model?  my therapist, my old high school guidance counsellor, my friends.
what was the last compliment you received?  Owen said my hair looked good today.
what was the last text you sent?  it was a really long Facebook message to the girl I’m currently talking to, we’re going on a date on Thursday, I’m excited.
how old were you when you found out santa wasn’t real?  Idk, I figured it out pretty young, I was a bright kid.  Maybe five or six?
what is your dream car?  I don’t really know.  I like 70s muscle cars but honestly at the end of the day any car is a good car.  Plus, practically-speaking, I would like something that is kind on the environment, an electric car or a hybrid.
opinion on smoking?  I think that it is something people do when they need something to alleviate a distressing situation.  It’s no secret that smoking is more prevalent among the poor and the mentally ill, as well as those with high-stress jobs.  I am an ex-smoker who relapses one or two times a year, the last time I had a cigarette was early April.  I sometimes start smoking again when I am not doing well emotionally or if I’m really stressed (eg during exams).  And I don’t like it, it makes me feel tired, it makes my throat phlegmy, it leaves a bad taste in my mouth and it makes me stink of smoke, and it is fucking expensive, but it meets a need.  So my opinion is that I don’t like smoking, but sometimes it has a hold on me that I can’t resist, and I have the utmost compassion for anyone who smokes.
do you go to college?  yeah, I’m in my last year of my undergrad.
what is your dream job?  clinical child and youth psychologist.
would you rather live in rural areas or the suburbs?  inner-city suburbs - far out enough to still live in a free-standing house with a garden, but close enough that I can walk to the city, or be there after a short bus trip. That’s the situation I live in at the moment and it’s perfect.
do you take shampoo and conditioner bottles from hotels?  No, because I’m a snob and only like to use my own shampoo and conditioner.  But I don’t see anything wrong with it, since you’re paying for them.  Taking appliances and dressing gowns and towels, however, is not acceptable in my opinion.
do you have freckles?  Not really.
do you smile for pictures?  Sometimes but I hate having my photo taken so it always looks strained.
how many pictures do you have on your phone?  Not that many at the moment, I just did a big dump of photos onto my laptop, I like to do that from time to time so my iCloud doesn’t run out of space.
have you ever peed in the woods?  yeah, and on the side of the road, and once behind Sophie’s house when her flatmate was taking a really fucking long time in the shower and I desperately needed to pee.
do you still watch cartoons?  nah, but only cos they’re not my cup of tea, absolutely no hate.
do you prefer chicken nuggets from Wendy’s or McDonalds?  I’m a vegetarian.
Favorite dipping sauce?  see above.
what do you wear to bed?  pyjama pants and an old t-shirt.
have you ever won a spelling bee?  no, they’re not a thing in New Zealand, but if they were I would have fucking cleaned up - not to blow my own horn or anything but I am a freakishly good speller.  It’s kind of a not terribly useful skill though, and doesn’t say anything about my level of intelligence.  Just like my weird propensity for memorising numbers, even if I haven’t used them in 10 or 15 years (like my NCEA student number, and the mobile number for the cellphone I lost when I was 14).
what are your hobbies?  netflix, napping, and memeing.
can you draw?  nope, not even a little bit.
do you play an instrument?  yeah I play the violin, and I can also play piano, and I’m a decent choral singer, and I was once an okay percussionist, and I am a below-average guitarist, and an abysmal flute player.  But those last three were self-taught so yeah.
what was the last concert you saw?  The Veils BUT I’m going to see Sigur Rós on Friday and I am dying of excitement.
tea or coffee?  peppermint tea.
Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts?  Dunkin Donuts, but not for the coffee, I just really like donuts.  Plus we don’t have Dunkin Donuts in Wellington so it’s a huge novelty for me when I get to have them, I’m almost as excited about getting Dunkin Donuts when I fly into Auckland on Friday as I am about seeing my favourite band live haha.
do you want to get married?  Yes.
what is your crush’s first and last initial?  I don’t currently have a crush.
are you going to change your last name when you get married?  No but I will consider hyphenating if that’s something my wife wants to do.
what color looks best on you?  black I guess.
do you miss anyone right now?  I kinda miss Soph but these days I’m just starting to, like, I don’t know.  Adjust.  Which is nice.  Realising that the way things worked out is for the best, because otherwise I would have been in for a lot of misery.  Even though Sophie is a wonderful person whom I love and care about a huge amount.  Apart from that, I miss being close to Nic, because she is like a sister to me, and I wish that we lived near each other so we could support one another.
do you sleep with your door open or closed?  Closed.
do you believe in ghosts?  No, but I could be convinced to change my mind with enough evidence.
what is your biggest pet peeve?  People with bad manners, it is really not that fucking hard to say “please” and “thank you”?  I mean, I’m talking in a work context here pretty much, customers can be so fucking rude.  And the rude ones are all, without a single exception, baby boomers.  So... yeah.
last person you called?  Owen.
favorite ice cream flavour?  I’m not really an ice cream person but I really like Ben and Jerry’s chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, that’s another thing I’m super looking forward to when I go to Auckland.  If it seems like I’m obsessed with food, it’s because I am - but I am especially obsessed with getting all of the bread and sugar I can into myself in the next week because next week I’m starting the keto diet and I’m dying a little inside just thinking about it, I really fucking love sugar and bread.
regular oreos or golden oreos?  regular.
chocolate or rainbow sprinkles?  rainbow.
what shirt are you wearing?  t-shirt with very thin stripes.
what is your phone background?  beyoncé in the formation video.
are you outgoing or shy?  depends on the context, but mostly shy.
do you like it when people play with your hair?  yeah.
do you like your neighbors?  I don’t know them but they seem nice in passing.
do you wash your face? at night? in the morning?  always.
have you ever been high?  yes.
have you ever been drunk?  yes.
last thing you ate?  cheesecake.
favorite lyrics right now?  eh.
summer or winter?  SUMMER.
day or night?  Idk I like both, it depends.
dark, milk, or white chocolate?  milk.
favorite month?  January.
what is your zodiac sign?  Aries but I don’t believe in that shit.
who was the last person you cried in front of?  Either my therapist or Owen and Autumn, I can’t remember.  Possibly both, I went through a stage of pretty much constantly crying a couple of weeks back lmao.

There are LAYERS to my ish
Good Hello everyone! Bienvenue. This my first blog post. It has been a long time coming too. After years of poking, prodding, and pushing from friends and family near and far, I have chosen to FINALLY start sharing my writings with the general public. Even though I am extremely confident in what I write, wrote, or have yet to have written, I am scared of what you outsiders might think. I am unsure exactly what will become my regular posting scheduled, style, or tone of this blog. I am a work in progress and anything I share is like me giving up a little fragile piece of myself. That type of exposure is scary. So, although I welcome feedback, remember dear readers, that there is a living breathing human being on the other side of the computer, whom depending on what is going on in her personal life might take things to heart. If you choose to leave a comment make sure that it is truly constructive and/or positive in nature.
I would like to start off by explaining why I chose this particular name for my blogging. Peppercorn in a sea of salt. Like the great cartoon character Shriek once said (mind you I am paraphrasing here) I’m like an onion and there are layers to my ish, you feel me?
As a child, my mother would talk about how my sister and I, were often the only black children in an extra circular activity. Ballet, softball, choir, student council, band, etc.  She would always say the phrase, “You are like a peppercorn in a sea of salt.” As I grew older this saying started to take on even more meanings. You see, my mother was a teacher for nearly over three decades and the importance of education never was lost upon her daughters. She made sure to have us involved knowledge enriching activities year around. Countless hours during afternoons and weekends were spent going to library, bookstores, and cultural festivals. We were exposed to anything my mom felt would help us become successful in school and beyond.
In school, I would end up being bored because I was like “ugh, this stuff is too easy.” I did scholastic testing and ended up on the accelerated track in school and later offered to be in gifted program but, opted out of going that far. No offence but, if you saw those little uppity jerks that thought they were better than everyone else because of a high IQ, you would not want to be associated with them either. That  gifted program was like committing social suicide in elementary/middle school. Your girl was good on that front. It was bad enough I was one of the only black kids whose parents were married prior conception and still married into adulthood. I was rare oddity. My mother drove me to school and my father picked me up after. Baffled classmates asking questions like, What you mean your dad lives with you and you give him and your mom a goodnight kiss every night? Wait you don’t take the bust to school? You talk so “white” and use such big words. I hate that saying by the way. But that’s for a different post.
Being on the accelerated track, did not make social life easier for me either. Being focused in school work, I got teased a lot. I was not aware it was probably racially charged until got older and life got a lot more real and less rose colored. But the teasing from people who looked like me in regular school and the teasing from the people who are the color of my palm made me recluse into myself, developing my current level of self-sufficiency. As Jhene Aiko poetic lyricist states, I never need nobody, I don’t need no one. I kind of love/hate myself for being this way.
I learned how to entertain myself by making my own fun. This were I started doing a lot more independent activities including writing in journals. I mean, I had written before because it was a mandatory thing for classes but, I found myself writing my feelings down in my free time since I felt stiffled to express myself in front of my peers. Constantly labeled a weirdo for being me.
And while we are on the subject. Being me. I am a product of my environment. I am a melting pot of what I culturally am, society sees me as, and what I am exposed too. Nature and nurture people. It’s one hell of a thing. The internet boom and globalization helped shaped me too. Growing up in southern California, I played and lived alongside many Hispanic, Latino, and my Central American brothers and sisters. (See what I just did there? Yeah, I’m trying to be politically correct since some people will try to come attack me for some underline reason that as a person from a different cultural background I will NEVER understand. Don’t crucify me in any of my later postings where I only use one term to describe the beautiful brown people as a collective, okay.)
Back to me being a SoCal native. I was exposed to mariachi, pupusas, samba dancing, tacos, Selena Quintanilla, Day of the Dead, and all other brown cultural stuff Americans tend to lump all together as “Mexican.” So, because I was an eight-year-old singing songs in Spanish and loving my spicy ass salsa laced food, I was getting called “Blexican” by my father’s friends. What can I say. I like, what I like. And race completely was lost upon me, as a child. I just saw people as people. So here, I am in enjoying the all the beauty of a group of people that aren’t me yet, are a part of me.
Fast forward to high school. I was not allotted a chance to take Spanish as my foreign language of choice in the honors program I got into. I elected to take Japanese instead. Here I go being different again. Choosing the road less traveled. I get exposed to Japanese culture during the summer to keep up my foreign language study. Consuming sushi, sukiyaki, okonomiyaki, matcha, and speaking Japanese phrases on the daily became part of me as a person. Now I had my friends saying I was an “honorary Asian”. People I interacted with on the internet assumed I was a happa, half Japanese/half white, (thanks to my namesake) because of me constantly typing Japanese/ “white” phrases.
As you can tell by my interesting upbringing, I’m not your stereotypical African Young Woman. My parents managed to be well educated and married for over 30 years in a society so, used to seeing black females being loud, ratchet, single parent raising a slew of children, all fathered by a different black deadbeat jailbirds. I speak English, American Sign Language, some Japanese, Spanish, and French. My name sounds white on paper and I sound white in professional settings. I enjoy different cultural cuisines and customs. I’m an introvert and through great practice can project some extroverted mannerisms, as all the teasing and unjustified prejudice has made me pretty much hate people at large. In all seriousness, I am socially awkward at best. I am a late-bloomer, I lost my last tooth at age 15 and I had my first REAL kiss at age 24. I play three instruments, enjoy listening to my eclectic musical library, and you can on occasion, catch me singing folk music and rapping 18 bars. I cannot be put in a box or check one box off on a census list. Yeah, you cannot paint me in one broad stroke, in one bland color. I am unique. I got spice. I am a peppercorn in a sea of salt. Remember that.
