#the real merlin and arthur
I cannot believe Merlin spent 10 years at Arthur's side with no plan on how not to be discovered other than "gotta make him question his sexuality so he doesn't notice The Magic"
And I mostly cannot believe that it worked

its hillarious how protective arthur and the knights are of merlin
whicheverone you ask, they would say that merlin is a precious angel, anyone who would dare lay a finger on him would taste their swords, merlin is the best of them all the only one worthy of love
meanwhile merlin is leaning against a nearby wall, sighing dramaticaly with hands litetally covered in blood
and as far as the knights are concerned this aint blood, what are you talking about. this is merlin. the red on his hands is the paint he uses to customise clothes for orphans because hes such a good person, they dont deserve him hes so precious look at him

thinking about how, in two days time, i'll be releasing to the world the most unhinged merlin fic I have ever written as of yet. it is a julius caesar au featuring:
🔪 merlin stabbing arthur in his heart
🔪“Do you think I liked it, hiding and existing all alone? Never knowing who to go to or what to do— never knowing how to help, how to show you, how to love you, Arthur! My heart bled all its love for you.”
🔪 an actual golden age instead of bbc's poor attempt in one
happy ides of march <3
EDIT: My breaths are run by your compass

Since Merlin is trending today, I’d like to take this moment to remind you all that in episode one Arthur was canonically referred to as “Merlin’s destiny” and that in the last episode Arthur canonically tells Merlin that he “doesn’t want him to change” and that he “wants him to always be him”

the merlin ending is so heartbreaking. arthur is discovering for the first time exactly who merlin is. morgana is tightly holding on to her last shred of hope, realising all of her efforts were in vain. gwen waits for a husband who will never come home, and camelot waits with her. gwaine dies for nothing, in percivals arms, and percival watches. arthur feels he's been lied to for ten years, and merlin thinks he hates him. morgana dies alone, unloved. we as the viewers are given the last shred of hope, the miniscule belief that he might just lives, but it is in vain. merlins efforts, his life, his destiny, is in vain. he has failed. Arthur dies anyway. gwen and Leon and percival and merlin are the only originals left. merlin spends the rest of his life and many more waiting for arthur, and that is how it ends. on a positive so faint it can barely be heard. it ends with a broken queen and a grieving kingdom and a failed sorcerer and a dead king. it ends, centuries later, with arthur gone and merlin waiting

I'm not a writer so don't ask me for a fic, but
I keep imagining a scenario where Merlin is holding Arthur as he's dying, but with a magical grief outburst like Morgana's over Morgause. Except for Merlin it sends his time manipulation powers into overdrive and he ends up reversing it, all the way back to the beginning. I've read several fics where he time travels back, but in this scenario I imagine Arthur ALSO knows about it, because Merlin was holding him as it happened. Imagine Camelot at the very start of season 1 and only Arthur and Merlin have knowledge of the past/future 10 years. I'd imagine it would change quite a bit (they def support Morgana from the beginning, smuggle out any sorcerers because they don't quite want to actually murder the king, maybe Arthur and Morgana end up simply traumatizing him with their stances on magic idk, they adopt mordred and also hatch and smuggle Aithusa in, gaslighting everyone into thinking she's a bird)
Now Arthur has to do the whole 'keep Merlin's magic a secret' thing.. he's terrible at it, Morgana ends up knowing within 5 minutes
I would also imagine it would change the relationship dynamics, sharing 10 years with only one person is bound to bring you even closer together (yes I need merthur to happen here, but it could also be mergwenthur 👀 or if Merthur is endgame Gwen should at least get to end up with both Lancelot and Morgana, she deserves everything)

yk there's a lot of talk about the way merlin is practically a god but lives as an unassuming servant, and seeing this surprises druids/other magic users. i wanna see kind of the same thing happen to arthur with the people of his kingdom. we know arthur so intimately, from merlin's pov, but i wanna see him as a living legend. stories of his valor spreading across land, blown out of proportion and missing details. “the prince slayed the great dragon and gifted its head to the king!” “some say the goddess blessed him when he was born, when she took the queen back. how else does one survive an attack by a questing beast?” “he held out his hand and the sword stuck in solid stone flew to him! iwan says meredith’s aunt saw it herself!” “the word has come, king arthur defeated annis’ champion—a giant of a man!” old men discussing arthur’s policies, comparing them with those of previous rulers, and being glad that it's him on the throne “finally, a good fucking king.” people having faith that their ruler is generous and fair and can be approached in times of need, and having the comforting knowledge that he would do his best to help because that's what he did with the other village last year! young boys dreaming to join his army and young girls daydreaming about a fairy tale ending with him (or vice versa, obv). just... arthur of his people.
what I'm saying is i want an outsider pov character study of arthur pendragon king of camelot. hope that helps

honestly the choice to make geoffrey of monmouth a character in merlin is one of the funniest things the writers could have done. we know the myth survives and that arthur's story 'will live long in the minds of men', so we can assume that the major arthurian works were still written, including historia regum britanniae and prophetiae merlini, both of which were written by geoffrey. knowing this, we have two possible avenues of interpretation open to us: 1) that geoffrey had no idea what was going on, which seems fairly unlikely. and 2) that he knew full well that what he was writing was pure bullshit and gave precisely zero fucks about it, and i for one think that is hilarious.
