The Pillars of Creation
Tumblr media
The Pillars of Creation are a collection of young stars that resemble pillars and arches reaching out into space. This picture was taken by the James Webb Space Telescope in 2014 but was originally photographed by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 1995. The difference in the photos is astounding, and it shows how far we have come in capturing the beauty and detail of the stars.
A comparison of the original 1995 photo and the 2014 retake below.

The Pillars of Creation
1 1/2 x 2 ft oil painting, based on the Hubble telescope photo. This was quite the challenge to paint but overall I'm happy with the result!

So I was re-watching Good Omens s02e01 and noticed something really cool!
Tumblr media
Beautiful, huh? But...I recognize part of this nebula!
Tumblr media
That's a real nebula! That's the Pillars of Creation!
Tumblr media
What a cool, real life easter egg!

The Pillars of Creation (of Adam).
Yes, I’m still obsessed with the new images from the Webb telescope. Also I drew this while we were watching Interstellar...

The Pillars of Creation
Post #13 in Physics and Astronomy, 01/12/2023
This is a slightly shorter post than usual, but I think some things are worth talking about less, and you will see why in a minute. I, for one, upon first witnessing the beautiful photo was lost for words, and I am sure you will be too.

Captured by the James Webb Space Telescope, the gorgeous, intricate landscape details majestic rock-like formations. Lovingly dubbed the Pillars of Creation and around 6,500 lightyears away from us, they were first popularised in 1995 and are believed to help us understand the formation of stars over millions of years.
Tumblr media
Here's a close-up! I've scattered a few taken from the full-size image. I can't upload it to Tumblr because of the sheer file size, so I would HIGHLY recommend downloading it yourself to admire it yourself!

Donning the appearance of rock formations, it may come as a surprise that the structure is made up of interstellar gas and dust! These tendrils remain at the heart of the Eagle Nebula, and hide newborn stars in those columns.
Tumblr media
What are the wavy lines resembling lava? Young stars sometimes shoot out jets that end up colliding with clouds of material. The glow, however, comes from hydrogen molecules with a lot of energy that arise from those jets.

All originally taken from the NASA website!

In 2007, it was reported that nebula, the Pillars of Creation (the nebula that Crowley and Aziraphale switched on together when they first met in Good Omens series 2) was likely destroyed by a star going supernova 6,000 years ago
In 2015, new images taken showed there was no evidence of a nearby supernova and that the Pillars of Creation were likely still in existence
Much to think about in terms of the TV Omens timeline

Hubble’s image of The Pillars of Creation was always my favourite astronomical image but JWST takes it to a whole other level. ✨

JWST - The Pillars Of Creation (image and description from NASA)
[Image description: This Webb image of the “Pillars of Creation” has layers of semi-opaque, rusty red gas and dust that start at the bottom left and go toward the top right. There are three prominent pillars rising toward the top right. The left pillar is the largest and widest. The peaks of the second and third pillars are set off in darker shades of brown and have red outlines. Peeking through the layers of gas and dust is the background, set in shades of blue and littered with tiny yellow and blue stars. Many of the tips of the pillars appear tinged with what looks like lava. There are also tiny red dots at the edges of the pillars, which are newly born stars.]
