I read a kakaobi fic yesterday... OMG.

for love of a boy by revecake. Based on Yukio Mishima's The Sound of Waves. One word: masterful. My art does not depict a specific scene from the fic, it's just something inspired by its mood! Obito's appearance is not fully fic-compliant. Just look at these various quotes:

from the water, kakashi rises and rests his arms on the edge. a tilt of his head, his wet hair falls, pooling silver on obito’s boat, and when obito looks, looks with a certain haze across his eyes, kakashi becomes the mystical half-fish of his dreams. kakashi smiles, and the plain beauty of his naked face is perfectly real. “it’s a good catch today, isn’t it?”

“kakashi-kun?” his father laughs, an exasperated turn of his brow. he continues to trace his blade under the skin of tuna, and another piece of flesh comes butterfly-free, as light and pink as a sakura petal floated from the island’s schoolyard to the sea.

the rain blurs for a moment, and the sight through the dripping leaves is akin to a sheen of sun being thrown from the sky. dazzling, a celestial maiden’s robe has been haphazardly tossed from the heavens to be muddied as a damp blessing across the fresh ground.

when he’s finished, the only curtain to his nudity are the wet clothes draped and swinging from the window pane. they balloon and deflate in the imitation of a body in the wind, but as obito rises, stretches, strides towards the bedroom, the shape of his shoulders and back leaves a solid impression through the wet glass. he doesn’t need to wash, not when the sun has already bathed the lean lines of him in dry heat.

dreams are only fading things, passing on waves, caught in the wind, melted into dew by the morning.

obito looks up at that pale face, and what he sees - he wraps his hands around kakashi’s wrists to keep him there. how can he say this? how does he give language to his desire, how does he make kakashi understand his earnesty in this very moment? he cannot let it become an untranslatable disappearance, as so many dear things are, have been lost to sea.

I don’t understand why Kishimoto never added Kakashi having thoughts about Gai when he died in the pain assault. It’s like he doesn’t want his relationship with Gai to have depth but then adds all these interactions and feelings that show how much he means to Kakashi.

He thinks of his dead friends and family, he thinks of Konoha 11, but he doesn’t think about his longest and biggest support? Not even a passing thought?

Might Gai is Kakashi’s best friend and rival, he isn’t a nuisance to him and he doesn’t think he’s less than him. Their relationship has substance and evidence to show how much they care about one another, im sick of Kishimoto and his constant need to diminish it then prop it up and then diminish it again. How can he be so inconsistent with relationships and character writing??

the longer i sit with it the more it really gets me how nobody ever really mentions obito and rin before obito's reveal in shippuden. kakashi vaguely mentions his old friends and i think other characters allude to the tragedy of kakashi's past but rin and obito themselves are lost to time. something about that is so fucking haunting and so gutting. you would think it would be a pretty big deal that two kids from the same class died within a year of each other, but the nine tails attack probably wiped so much clean that nobody could really carry the grief... still, when we see their class in flashbacks, we recognise almost everyone else, so... there's something really sad and hopeless about their absence...

there's a lot a LOT to say about it from a lot of different angles and i don't really feel like going into meta posting territory i just have big feelings about it you know? and to me i guess obito encapsulates a lot of the anger. for the people who get left behind and forgotten. and that can mean a lot of things

#two of my classmates died on separate occassions in short span of time in high school and i wont claim that grief because #i didnt know either of them well but i did feel a lot of anger and overwhelming hopelessness. that life keeps relentlessly going on #even when people get left behind #it feels so unfair and so painful... there are so many more aspects to it though as well #like people who are left behind in other ways due to circumstance or class or race or etc etc- often a combination of those factors #and obito as a kid reminds me a lot of a good friend i had when i was little who was late to class every day #because of those outside circumstances #and again someone in high school who i was late WITH every day. because ya #and i feel very big about that. and about rins death as something so fucking preventable #the tragedy also of baby teacher minato who was so so not ready to be in charge of anyone. but. that's something else #anyway i guess i just really feel a connection with that anger and despair #sorru was watching niji and felt fucking insane about it #obito and rin are like two sides of one thing. maybe of one person. of one concept #part of why i'm so so crazy about obito being trans is because i see him as also using rin's memory as a conduit for #his anger and grief about his own lost younger self. hence: baby obito is also a little girl #i think they are best friends. its so important. idk none of this is wider narrative meta #its just my feelings about them in particular #haunting dead girl and the ghost who has to carry on and can't rest

I finished the special story in Connections and it got me to bawl my eyes out so bad. That story was so much more meaningful and emotional and impactful than the entirety of Naruto itself. What the fuck do you mean it was written by Kishimoto????? He did NOT write something for a side story in one of the ultimate ninja storm games and make it better than anything he's ever done before. There's just no fucking way.

The thing I think everyone needs to Get about Itachi is that it's less that he's exceedingly loyal to Konoha and more that he's obsessed with Sasuke to the point where it's detrimental to both Sasuke (especially) and himself.

“To fight for the pride of family, for friends when all they do is hold you back from completing your duty is pathetic.” Kakashi stood up, and Obito then noticed his side of the shrine was already spotless. “Shinobi who place comrades over the mission, pride over the mission, will be the first to die.”

“Kakashi!” Rin had a strained yet somewhat puzzled expression on her face. “Surely, that’s going too far?”

Obito was too stricken to respond at first but his shock was soon replaced with righteous, defensive anger. “How could you say that? It’s the people around me who have helped me be who I am today! Being a shinobi isn’t all about duty. Are you heartless? Do you even have any family you actually love?”

Obito expected a malicious rebuttal from Kakashi, laced with poisonous intent. Instead, he met grey eyes clouded with tears. There was a feral edge to the way Kakashi staggered back, feet swaying and arms hanging loosely from his body. Those eyes, despite its mistiness, held a bottomless, fathomless rage. Yet, weirdly enough, Obito felt it wasn’t entirely directed at him. Still, his heart thumped wildly in anticipation and dread. He knew he had gone too far.

#🫶🏾#ur honour i have no excuse #sorry it’s bad it’s a first draft im gonna tweak it loads #some thoughts i have is that obito despite some tragedies like being an orphan #is still someone who grew up with so much love #he wasn’t alone—he had his grandma #his clan etc #kakashi on the other hand… he is the first person obito really confronts abt the reality of being a shinobi #he cannot comprehend someone so devoid of love and family when he has been embraced with it #it makes him insensitive and sort of naive even if he has the best intentions #i realise just now this reminds me of MITSUMI from skip to loafer #obito’s passion his drive to be a shinobi comes from the love he received and wanting to honour it #in a similar way to lff sasuke #i think this contrast like in the manga makes his descent all the more tragic #*sniffs* the way it’s only after obito rejects and loses all his love that he finally becomes the strongest #there’s so much ignorance here it hurts… he is unaware of what truly awaits him as a shinobi #love alone is not enough to spare u when u a child soldier #and kakashi knows this… which is why he was the only one in canon to survive #brb throwing up again over team minato
