Noie’s Trip
After four long, uneventful years, highschool was finally over. Noie was going to make sure her and her brother had a better time in college together - she just had to make sure he picked the right one.
This piece was for the 2020 Transcendence AU Zine! There are many other awesome artists and writers who participated; go check out the full PDF here!
See most updated version on Archive of Our Own.
______________________________________________________________
It had been a year since nothing happened. Noie was seventeen years old, and life was coming up fast. She couldn’t wait to be done with high school, couldn’t wait to get out of here…
It had been a year since nothing happened, and Noie had taken her brother on a road trip to tour around one of the state universities. It was a bit of a drive through lonely desert roads, and Noie had the whole weekend set up - she’d booked a motel for a night, filled up her gas tank, queued up all the music and audiobooks they could possibly need… it was gonna be great.
“Isn’t it… a little far from home, Noie?”
“Yeah! I mean, it’s not out of state, but it’s still pretty far out! No one’s gonna bother us out here.”
“But SASU’s so much closer.”
“Oh, you… wanna stay closer to them?”
“Yeah! And I’ve been looking it up, SASU has a great paranormal maths program…”
It had been a year since nothing happened, and this road trip was going to go great. Dipper was going to be impressed. They stopped at a gas station, and continued south, into the darkness.
    “What does that light mean?”
“Oh… oh, shoot, we got a flat tire.”
“What?! We’re in the middle of nowhere, how are we-”
“Don’t panic! I’ll just change the tire. Gimme one second, bro bro!”
It had been a year since nothing happened, and Noie stared at the slashes in her tires. She watched a plain truck pull over in front of them, and felt her blood run cold.
It had been a year since absolutely nothing happened. Noie was a normal teenager with a normal brother, touring universities like any normal person would do. She’d never been involved in any demonic stuff in her life.
So why was she now being bound and gagged and dragged into the desert by cultists? Why were they asking her brother about some kind of demon fight in a convenience store? What was going on?
“Tell us how you banished the Dreambender! Tell us now, or else!”
Noie felt the knife’s edge press into her skin, and she could only gulp.
She had no idea what they were talking about. Oh god, they were going to kill her, weren’t they? And they were going to kill Dipper.
    Oh god.
    Oh, god.
______________________________________________________________
Dipper’s head pounded. His heart raced. He could hardly even concentrate on the cultist interrogating him; his eyes only fixed on the circle being drawn before them. The magic coming off it… stars, his brain felt like it was coming out of his ears.
“How did your sister do it? How did she bind our Lord? Tell us!”
“Lord?” Dipper squinted to the side, where he could make out a blobby figure. “Noie? A-are you-”
“Do not speak to her!” The slap barely registered in his mind; Noie’s gasp did. “Just tell us how she banished Alcor, and we won’t kill you. We need only one sacrifice tonight. Tell us what happened at the convenience store, and it won’t be you.”
Alcor. That name rang strangely in Dipper’s head. He squeezed his eyes shut, but the circle still seemed to draw his gaze. His head was killing him… and the shouting wasn’t helping.
“He doesn’t know anything! Don’t hurt him!”
    “Be quiet-”
“But we didn’t do anything! You think I know how to banish a demon? I’ve never seen one in my life!”
“You lie! I saw you after the convenience store exploded - you and that vampire banished him!”
    “I don’t know what you’re talking about!”
“I saw you banish him from the world, from our circles! He hasn’t answered our summons in years! I know he yearns for freedom; it was clearly his wish that I witnessed what I did, his wish that I find you and set him free! Now tell me how you did it!”
Noie said nothing - if Dipper could think, he’d assume she was stunned into silence.
But he couldn’t think. He couldn’t even try. The circle… his eyes were closed, but the lines burned themselves into his retinas regardless. He watched as the Twin Star was traced in the centre, and grit his teeth as the pressure in his head swelled to an unbearable pain. His whole body felt like it was going to burst out of his skin.
He wasn’t just being torn apart, he was being pulled.
Towards the circle.
                The circle.
                    The circle…
    “Dipper!”
Dipper barely felt the hands that were lifting and dragging him. He was feeling other things; feeling little rips form in the fabric of his mind, feeling strange tidbits of information trickle in like fire on his brain.
“This is your last chance, girl. Tell us how you banished him, or we’ll send his soul to the Dreambender!”
All of a sudden he knew that that cultist’s name was Rodney Smith. He worked at a car dealership, and none of his employees liked him. He had a warrant out for his arrest - a contempt of court charge for that DUI hearing he skipped.
“No! Don’t kill him! Don’t kill him, I’ll do anything! Dipper!”
He knew Naomi Faybelle Argenta desperately wanted them to go to the same college, even as it was becoming clear they had different needs. She’d booked this whole trip for him, even though she’d already made up her mind. She only queued up his favourite tunes for the ride over, because she knew he didn’t really like her louder music.
He knew how many times she’d cry in her life. He knew she was going to get dementia like her grandmother. He knew the day she was going to die.
He knew. He knew. He knew heknewheknewheknewheknewohgodstop stopithurtsheknewhe-
He knew there was blood on the circle. His blood… on his circle.
The bubble of his mind popped then, and suddenly Alcor knew exactly what was going on. He let out a rumbling groan, and then stretched out his wings. It felt good to throw off that meatsack, to let magic crackle over his form.
    “M-my lord! You’re here! You’re back!”
Them. He cracked a golden eye open to see the humans who had destroyed his human body. They were approaching - nervously? Reverently? Some were nervous. The one in front was revenant, its hands extended out like it wanted to touch Alcor.
“I can’t believe it! I freed you! I freed you, my lord!” The human laughed maniacally. “I followed all your signs, and now, now you’re here to reward me!”
Alcor growled as it approached, making it stop short of the circle. Still, there was an earnestness to this one’s aura; he could have fun with this.
“A̸̲̹̠̞̥̱̪h̹̪̱̹̼,̷͎̲̘͈̣ͅ ̼̹͙̗̙͓͔s҉͈̝̫̲o̸̭̘ ̜̥̖͇y͏̙̥̝o̮͖͈̦u̮̹̺̻͔̝͞ͅ ̨̹̝̪̩w̞̣̭̣̻̳͠o̦̥̫̥̻ṵl͇d̷̘͕̺̻ ̜̪̺̖̙l̫̥̞͕̟̭͡ͅi̦̻̗k̢̮̫e̤͎̘̱̥͉ ̧͉̙̤̰̤̩a͢ ̼͙̤͔f̮͓ì̯t̲͔̭ṯi͜n͎̦̝̮̝̫͞g̼̯͇͢ ͈̘̩̻r̞͇͠e̶͓̞̱̻ͅẉa̭͇̦͚̙r̥̯͉̬̼d̖͈͍̣͇.” Alcor stepped out of the chalk lines, his smile going wide and jagged. “Ș̴̻t҉̙e̘̙̯̫̥͕p̳͚͖̺̥ ̢̭ͅfo̴rw̢̠̰̦̻̜̞a̮̲ͅr̛̺̰̺̜̰ͅd͙̰͎͙ͅ,̖ͅ ͔̩̬͈t̳̪͇̼͙̮̘͜h̝̣͍͎ęn̜͈̠̯͍̲͙,͈͝ ̤̣̣a̧͍̙͍͎͙͉͈n̙͖̺̞͎̙̺͠d̯͇̟͔̮̹ ͎͈͇r̵̜̻̭e͙̭̺ͅc͔̭̱̰̣͔e̯̝͖͡i̬̝͍͟v̥̜̤͍e̟̳̺̘͕̯̕ ̩̭͇̬w̢̻͖̻̜h̪͈̺̭͍̣a̪̠t͚ ͠i̸͔̪͇̬s̪͔ ̠̯͇̖̲o̙̕ẃ̺̟͎̗̻͔e̟͈̭͉͉̲d̴̲͍̮̯͎͙ ͔̯̜͉̬̪̕ͅt̻ͅo̗ ̥̖͝y͔̞̮͍o͚͔̫̪̙u͔̙͖̝.”
The human stepped forward with a wild shine in its eyes. Alcor looked it up and down. Then he chuckled, unhinged his jaw, and went for the throat.
The screams from the other cultists tasted as sweet as the blood bubbling into his mouth. He stopped a moment to savour it, and then he chewed down further, biting through bone and sinew and a soundless scream to get to… The soul.
Alcor gave a full-body shudder as his teeth scraped it; stars, it had been too long since he’d eaten something so delicious. He dug his claws into the body’s shoulders, clamped his teeth around the soul, and ripped it out.
It tasted like wonderful pain. Alcor gulped it down in seconds, then set his eyes on the other cultists running into the desert. There was no moon tonight, but none of them escaped his gaze. None of them would escape him.
With a dark chuckle, he rose up from the ground, letting shadows descend onto the land, letting the blue fire dancing across his fingertips burn hot on the fear in the air, and-
He felt it.
Just above his ankle.
A silver knife - the same one that had slit his meatsack’s throat - was embedded in his form. The enchantments stung a bit, and he looked down, confused, to see who dared challenge the Dreambender… and ohh shit, ohhh no-
“You killed him!”  His own Mizar stared him down with murder in her eyes. Her hands, shaking and still tied with rope she’d cut, were grabbing at his shirt, dragging him down. “I’m gonna kill you! I’m gonna kill you!”
Alcor felt his stomach drop. He reached out a hand. “Mizar-”
“I’m gonna kill you!”
Mizar wrenched down; in his shock, he only watched as she tackled him to the ground and stabbed him in the chest. He felt it go in and out, then in and out again and then he caught her arms.
“You can’t hurt me, Mizar.”
“I don’t care!” She tried to wiggle free of his grip. “Let me go!”
“Mizar-”
“Just let me go! Just let me go!”
Alcor watched her struggle against him for another moment, the pit in his stomach deepening as he remembered the person this soul had formed around. He watched Noie give one final tug, then sniff and gasp and choke and dissolve into a moaning sob over her hands.
The knife fell onto the dirt, and when Alcor let go, she sank down to lay beside it. He stood, and stared at the black despair of her aura…
And the red blood on his hands. Blood was everywhere; blood was all over his front, and blood was crusting around his mouth, and blood was leaving a bitter taste in his mouth. And where there was no blood? There was void, and there was teeth, and there was not a hint of the Dipper Argenta that Noie wanted to see.
He looked like a demon, devouring a cultist’s soul over a circle of candles… he looked like a monster.
The thought caught in his throat, and his hand went to where she’d stabbed him. He hesitated, there, for a moment, and the only sound to be heard was the buzz of crickets and the broken sobbing of his sister.
Then Alcor swallowed his thoughts. Right now, Noie needed her brother back. She didn’t need a monster. She didn’t need him.
So with an arm that trembled, he raised his fingers and set about bringing everything back to normal.
Snap.
______________________________________________________________
“Nearly - ugh - done with the tire, bro!” Noie beamed at her brother as she tightened the lugnuts. “This oughtta be enough to get us into town! I’ll look up tire places once we’ve got service again - don’t you worry about anything!”
Dipper Argenta could’ve lied to himself and pretended the strain in her smile was only from changing the tire, but Alcor knew better. He tried to smile back, tried not to see the panic simmering in her aura.
“And we’ll still make it to the motel before check-in time! This is still gonna be the best trip ever!”
“I’m sure it will be, Noie.”
“You better believe it! And in the morning, we’ll get up, and - and apparently there’s this really good tea shop in town, we’ll check that out and then go look around! It’ll be amazing!”
“I’m sure it will be, Noie.” Dipper looked out into the darkness, and sighed. “I’m sure… I’m sure it will be.”
“Dipper? You, uh… okay?”
He looked back to her, and smiled. “I’m okay. Everything’s okay.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yeah. Yeah, just…” Dipper rubbed his neck. “Once we get into town, I need to go to the bathroom, or something. I need to clear my head.”
“Why? What’s wrong?” She stood up. “Is it a magic headache?”
“Yeah… let’s go with that. I just need a few minutes, though. Then I’ll be fine.” He looked down at his shoes. “Then everything will be back to normal, and… we’ll have fun.”
Dipper stood there for a moment in silence. Then, he felt an arm come and wrap around him. Noie smiled at him, and patted his shoulder.
“Alright.” She motioned to the car. “Well, the tire’s changed, so we better get a move on, huh?”
“Yeah. You’re right. No point in hanging around.”
Noie gave him a squeeze, and then with a laugh she pulled him towards the car. She started the engine, and the audiobook they’d been listening to started talking once again. Dipper tried for a smile at that, but it didn’t stick.
Things felt almost normal as they got back on the road... but he already knew the ending.

And now for something completely different...I went from reading One Punch Man to reading the Manga Classics adaptation of Sense and Sensibility. I'd gotten them all from the library and wanted to read them so I could return them.
I'm not really a Janeite (I'm more of a Brontë fan), but lately I've gotten into listening to audiobooks more, and one I listened to recently was Sense and Sensibility. I was familiar with the story from having seen the movie with Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet, as well as the musical (yes, there's a musical), but had never read the book. However, I found it actually quite entertaining. Even though the book doesn't have a lot of action, I still found myself invested in it and worried about whether Elinor would be happy in particular, since I related to her.
(Also apparently the 1995 movie cut out a lot of the book).
Anyway, having liked that, and also having liked the Manga Classics version of Pride and Prejudice (another novel I haven't read, but I've read a summary in this bathroom book we have, so I kinda know the plot), I decided to check this out. It does a good job illustrating the story, and does a good job hitting all the major events of the plot. (What they cut out are basically just the filler parts, as far as I could tell). And even though the artist says in the afterword that they had to simplify Colonel Brandon's background for the manga version, they actually bothered to include his story about Eliza in full visual detail (though to be fair, the story is kinda important to the plot), even giving his duel with Willoughby, something that is only alluded to in the book (Brandon doesn't even use the word "duel," but the words used when he describes their meeting make it pretty obvious if you know anything about duels, or if you've at least seen Hamilton), this glorious spread:
Tumblr media
(Though I don't really know why they're using swords, since I think pistols were the norm for duels at this time, but it looks cool anyway).
Also based on the notes afterward, it seems the artist made very specific artistic choices with character design. Marianne has a big mound of curls to represent her romantic side, while the more sensible Elinor has a more practical hairstyle. Willoughby is always depicted with his hair covering one eye, showing his deceitful nature. Edward Ferrars, on the other hand, is drawn in a sort of androgynous way to make him look pure and innocent (though the included progress sketches show that he looked more boyish at one point). Colonel Brandon's design kinda reminded me of how Darcy is drawn in the P & P adaptation, albeit older and sterner (which kinda makes sense cause his role in this novel seems similar to Darcy's IMO). I also liked the way the Miss Steeles were drawn; as I recall they're not supposed to be particularly pretty, and they appear kinda heavily made up in this which makes their rude, kinda tacky nature even more apparent. (I will say too that in the novel I could not stand Lucy Steele...but then I think she's meant to be unlikable).
Anyway, it was cool to see this story in another way!
(EDIT: This is the audiobook version I listened to BTW. 👇 Rosamund Pike does such a freaking good job with it)

Books Read in 2019: The Why
In a tradition I accidentally started for myself and now quite enjoy, at the end of the year I look back at my reading list and answer the question, why did you read this particular book?
Below, the books are split into groups by target readership age, plus nonfiction at the end. This year I have added the category “how I heard of it” as well, because I just think that info is neat.
FICTION
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Visitor - K.L. Slater. 2018. Read because: Ten episodes of The Good Cop weren't enough, so I tried to find something w/ similar characters, and this looked kinda like "TJ as a slightly more withdrawn weirdo." By the time I realized it wouldn't work due to being British, I was too excited by the prospect of a thriller to stop.
How I heard of it: Googling keywords
Like the Red Panda - Andrea Seigel. 2004. The back cover and first few pages reminded me of a friend I had once.
How I heard of it: Library
The Lost Vintage - Ann Mah. 2018. What's that? You've got some secret family history/a mystery from the past to be solved using old personal papers, including a diary? My jams.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
The Asylum for Wayward Victorian Girls (4th ed.) - Emilie Autumn. 2017. I googled for books that promised unique formatting/art design, and Emilie Autumn has always been an intriguing enigma to me.
I Heard the Owl Call My Name - Margaret Craven. 1967. I know this title, but not why -- when I tripped over it in the teen* section and saw how tiny it was, I decided to find out what it was about. (*it's there because it's often taught in schools. It's here because its intended audience is adult.)
Escape - Barbara Delinsky. 2011. Went looking for an audiobook -- the cover with a woman standing on a small bridge amidst the woods drew me in (I can't find that cover on the internet though), and the idea of abandoning responsibility and driving off to a small town sounded like my dream.
How I heard of it: Library
Saul and Patsy - Charles Baxter. 2003. Another search result from my attempt to cast Josh Groban in a novel -- Midwestern-set and a man very much in love with his wife, no worries about the relationship being wrecked? Sweet! (though ultimately, I had to mentally recast)
How I heard of it: Googling
California - Edan Lepucki. 2014. Needed an audiobook. The title and green forest cover caught my eye, and the off-the-grid life + promise of a mysterious and possibly suspicious settler community described in the plot appealed to me.
How I heard of it: Library
The Lost Queen of Crocker County - Elizabeth Leiknes. 2018. Woman moves back home to rural Iowa in a book described as a "love letter to the Midwest"? Look at all these good choices.
How I heard of it: Library
All The Things You Are - Declan Hughs. 2014. Was looking for a different book w/ this title, but saw Spooky Dark House cover + wild summary and wanted to know how that could possibly happen / what the explanation was.
How I heard of it: Library catalog
Tumbledown Manor - Helen Brown. 2016. Cover love. A book about restoring a historic family manor?? BRING ME THERE.
How I heard of it: Library
The War Bride's Scrapbook - Caroline Preston. 2017. IT'S LITERALLY A SCRAPBOOK. I loved her other one like this.
How I heard of it: Goodreads
Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day - Winifred Watson. 1938. Rewatched the movie and needed to relive an alternate take immediately (especially for more Michael).
How I heard of it: special features on the DVD
April & Oliver - Tess Callahan. 2009. This just screamed "(slightly less storybook) Ned/Chuck AU!!" [Pushing Daisies] at me. There was semi-platonic comfort-spooning in the second chapter, COME ON.
How I heard of it: Half Price Books
A Short Walk to the Bookshop - Aleksandra Drake. 2019. This looked like an even more solid Ned/Chuck AU, missing only the childhood connection/age similarity, with bonus fave keywords anxiety, widower, bookshop and dog.
How I heard of it: Googling
Girl Last Seen - Nina Laurin. 2017. Recently watched "Captive" and wanted a story of the aftermath from the captive's perspective.
How I heard of it: Goodreads (specifically, I looked up an older book by this title intending to check out related recs, but this came up first)

Holiday Shopping with Reacting to Something
Tumblr media
stock photo shamelessly lifted from
We know we haven’t generated original content in a very long time, but we wanted to get into the holidays in a way that was more or less on brand. So in the spirit of a Netflix recommendation algorithm, here are some suggestions for what to buy friends and family who liked some of the movies we saw in 2018 (including a couple that premiered in late 2017).
It’s probably obvious, but just to be super clear, the format below is --
If they liked this: They may also like this
Miri’s Gift Guide
The Shape of Water: I shouldn’t say a day pass to an aquarium because it’s a terrible, easy joke BUT I AM WHO I AM.
If you’re not a garbage person, maybe consider the rest of Del Toro’s creature filmography, anything related to Buffy the Vampire Slayer, or a collection of fairy tales by the Brothers Grimm or Hans Christian Andersen. Dark and gritty originals, not the tidied up versions.
Tumblr media
Call Me By Your Name: NO, I WILL NOT SAY ANYTHING TO DO WITH PEACHES BECAUSE EVEN I HAVE LIMITS. APPARENTLY. The book is a lovely, lyrical, tragic read (or listen, if you go with the Armie Hammer audiobook as I did), and I would also recommend giving a gift of solitary artistic pleasure in whatever way speaks to your intended recipient—a CD, a ticket to an art exhibit, a coffee table book of a painter you think they will love. Something beautiful that requires a little bit of space to enjoy privately.
Black Panther: The new Shuri comic! (I am a hypocrite because I haven’t read it yet but it looks so awesome!) Also, there are some choice funko pops for Black Panther, which are a nice, reasonable price and make a great desk or bookshelf addition.
Tumblr media
Annihilation: A DVD of Arrival and a book on fascinating genetic mutations. (The photo above is from the first linked book.) Also, tell them about the Twitter account Tessa as Goats, which is a true gift to us all.
Game Night: A murder mystery game! Or whatever game you think most appeals to them, but I personally think the immersive nature of a murder mystery is a true delight. Also, something Olivia the Dog themed because she’s awesome.
A Wrinkle in Time: For the actual child: one of the books published under the Rick Riordan Presents banner.
For the child in all of us: a soothing and/or empowering adult coloring book and some nice colored pencils.
Tumblr media
Thoroughbreds: Really cool sunglasses.
Love, Simon: Tickets to the upcoming Clea DuVall helmed queer rom com starring Kristen Stewart and YES this is a request for myself, obviously.
Blockers: Make them a dance music playlist on Spotify!! (Or burn an actual CD for peak nostalgia/those who enjoy physical media.) And if you have some time together, have your own dance party with as many or as few people as you want.

Ocean’s 8: LEVERAGE! BUY THEM A SEASON OF LEVERAGE!!! Give them the gift of even more cons and fun!
Incredibles 2: If they are parents: a night out without the children (this could mean a gift certificate or an offer to babysit). If not, try something heroic like these ornaments, or something that helps them learn to be their own hero, like a self defense or kickboxing class.
Tag: LASER TAG! It’s so fun, even if you’re bad at it! Give a gift card or book a session together and enjoy chasing each other around like giant, fun-loving idiots.

Set It Up: A massage. Anyone who related to this movie too much is likely very much in need of stress relief. Also, a large quantity of popcorn to be eaten in whatever manner they wish with no shame at all.
Hotel Artemis: A Swiss army knife and a couple of airplane bottles of booze.
Sorry to Bother You: An Oaktown t-shirt (I have been told by someone from the area that this is A Thing but I don’t actually know and I’m sorry for that) and a copy of Kafka’s Metamorphosis.
Crazy Rich Asians: Ideally, a whirlwind food tour of Singapore. If that’s not feasible, a Hulu subscription so they can enjoy Constance Wu’s full comic potential in Fresh Off the Boat. And a really nice candle, because it’s a small decadence that can really go a long way.
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before: The Wedding Date by Jasmine Guillory (if they like a steamy read), tall socks (if they like to be cozy and cute), and custom stationary (if they like to live dangerously).
Tumblr media
A Simple Favor: A cocktail shaker, fancy bitters, a really good mystery novel.
Widows: Tickets to go see Widows again because it’s amazing and is probably even more amazing a second time.

Wildlife or Widows: The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness
As I say in my Amazon review, this is the best applied ethics text I was never assigned. In fairness to my professors, attorney-turned-journalist Jill Filipovic hadn’t written it yet when I was a philosophy student. Filipovic is also not a philosopher. But she is a brilliant writer and a rigorous thinker, and The H-Spot is fundamentally and explicitly an Aristotelian ethical project. That is to say, it takes the starting position that political organization should be aimed at the goal of human flourishing (as opposed to, say, economic growth). From there Filipovic builds a case, or maybe it's better to say several cases, for specific ways in which American policy fails women and disproportionately women of color in this aim, and concrete ways in which it could address this failure. She does so largely through first-hand accounts of several women across America, in a wide range of socioeconomic circumstances. Although the institutions and less formal systems in play are complicated, the questions at the heart of all this are simple: What do women want? What do women need?
Filipovic asks these questions without pre-judgment, and without assuming that any answers are too unrealistic to consider. Not that anyone she talks to asks for anything "unrealistic." Partly this is because they often speak from too much experience for the unrealistic to occur to them as something they deserve to ask for, but also, the idea that woman-friendly policy is unrealistic is a Bad Take to begin with. Filipovic doesn't need to be pie-in-the-sky utopian to show how things could be much better for women (and by extension, it should but still doesn't go without saying, for everyone).
I left academic philosophy over five years ago, but I really think each chapter (built around topics like friendship, sex, parenting, and food) is brimming with potential paper topics for grad and undergrad students of ethics and/or political philosophy. Whether you’re philosophically inclined or not, if you think “women should be happy” and “the point of civilization is to make happiness easier for everyone” are uncontroversial claims, The H-Spot is the book for you -- and for your friends who loved the several underestimated women of Widows, or Carey Mulligan’s captivating portrayal in Wildlife of a woman doing the best she could within the restrictions of her era.

Black Panther: A Nation Under Our Feet
Though it helps to have some familiarity with the Avengers storylines that led up to Ta-Nehisi motherfucking Coates’s first year on the Black Panther comic -- as well as with the excellent opening arc of Matt Fraction’s Invincible Iron Man -- here’s all that even a new comics reader really needs to know before jumping into Nation: King T’Challa, the Black Panther, was recently unable to prevent several consecutive disasters in Wakanda. Both as a cause and as a result of these disasters, T’Challa worked with the so-called “Illuminati” (Tony Stark, Reed Richards, Stephen Strange, and other intellectual and strategic heavyweights) to prevent the end of the multiverse itself. That crisis averted, T’Challa has returned to Wakanda to resume his royal duties.
Coates takes as a starting premise that Wakanda, the most advanced nation on earth, would only still have a hereditary monarchy if the monarch was uniquely suited as a protector of the people. In the wake of the Panther’s failures in this regard, Nation opens with a rebellion against T’Challa’s rule on two fronts: domestic terrorists with an unknown agenda on one hand, and on the other, former officers of the Dora Milaje (the all-female royal bodyguard corps beloved by fans of the movie) rallying Wakandan women who have suffered great injustices unaddressed by the crown. The leaders of the latter, lovers Ayo and Aneka, are nominally antagonists to T’Challa, but to the reader they’re parallel protagonists. You root for both T’Challa and the Dora Milaje, even though their agendas are in tension, not unlike the way one might have rooted for both Tyrion Lannister and Robb Stark in early Game of Thrones. (Shuri’s around too, though she’s quite unlike her movie counterpart.)
When he’s not fighting or investigating, T’Challa does a lot of soul-searching and debating about his responsibilities as king, the ways it conflicts with his career as a globetrotting superhero, and whether and how the government of Wakanda must evolve. Though Wakanda is too small to be considered a superpower, the domestic terror angle, an interrogation of historical injustice, and the struggle between moral idealism and political reality make Wakanda a proxy in some important ways for modern America. (You may have noticed that Ryan Coogler did this too.) Coates’s meditation on leadership and political power made A Nation Under Our Feet not only a great superhero comic but -- this is not an exaggeration or a joke -- my favorite political writing of 2016.
Nation is illustrated mostly by Brian Stelfreeze and Chris Sprouse, with colors by Laura Martin; some of Stelfreeze’s designs clearly influenced the movie.

Thoroughbreds: Sweetpea
When a clever, mean-spirited would-be journalist with airhead friends learns that her boyfriend is cheating on her, old traumas bubble to the surface and she becomes a serial killer who targets sex offenders. Darkly, often cruelly hilarious, Sweetpea is what you’d get if American Psycho was set in southwestern England and for some reason starred Amy from Gone Girl. Protagonist Rhiannon is a self-described inhabitant of an Island of Unfinished Sentences, de facto Chief Listener of her “friend” circle, and a maker of lists. Lists of the things her friends talk about (babies, boyfriends, IKEA), signs she’d like to put up at work (please close doors quietly, please do not wear Crocs to work), and oh, the people she wants to kill. Like her boyfriend, at the moment. Or ISIS, when news coverage of a terror attack pre-empts her beloved MasterChef.
Author C.J. Skuse smartly chooses not to have Rhiannon wallow in her traumatic past as many superheroes do. We get glimpses for context, but Rhiannon is committed to moving forward, to escaping her demons rather than being defined by them. It matters that she wants to get better, even if she also hates that she’s bought into society’s definition of “better.” (#relatable)
It’s worth noting that Sweetpea leans seemingly uncritically into a lot of dated gender tropes, in Rhiannon’s assessments of the women around her. (Body positive she is not.) Then again, she’s an unreliable narrator -- one of the best demonstrations of this is a scene in which she’s convinced of her ability to fool the world into believing she’s normal, then overhears her dipshit co-workers talk about how unsettling she is -- so arguably we’re supposed to laugh at how terrible she is without necessarily agreeing with her. This is, I think, a perfectly legitimate approach to a protagonist, even if some find it unfashionable.
The book is not quite as thematically rich as it first appears, at least on the topic of sexual violence; it indulges a “stranger danger” picture of rape that doesn’t feel entirely contemporary. (For a more nuanced treatment of rape culture, see the sadly short-lived but wildly entertaining vigilante dramedy Sweet/Vicious.) But as a portrait of a vibrant, layered, genuinely Nasty-and-you-kinda-love-her-for-it woman -- given Oscar-caliber-portrayal-worthy life by Skuse’s wickedly sharp voice -- Sweetpea is too fun to pass up.

Upgrade or Infinity War: The Wild Storm
Castlevania showrunner Warren Ellis helped redefine superhero comics with 1999’s The Authority, which at DC’s request he's given a Gritty Reboot (along with the WildCATS, whom some of us remember from this extremely 90s cartoon) in The Wild Storm. Ellis has always been interested in The Future, both its potential wondrousness and its probable horror. Fans of Upgrade’s refreshingly unsanitized (and unsanitary) take on human enhancement through body modification will find much to like in Ellis’s spin on the trope of second-skin powered armor. (He semi-famously wrote Extremis, one of the comic arcs that inspired Iron Man 3.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
art by Jon Davis Hunt, from The Wild Storm #1
Angela Spica, a reimagining of Ellis’s old Authority character The Engineer, is a cybernetics expert who stumbles onto a sort of shadow government conspiracy related to her employer, and goes on the run with the armor she’s designed for them. (When not deployed, the armor is stored inside her body.) Angela is quickly targeted by multiple covert organizations, one of which rescues (?) her and brings her in on a secret history of technological arms races and contact with extraterrestrials. The Wild Storm is full of big action and bigger ideas, and for smart, generally curious superhero movie fans who find the decades-long continuities of the DC and Marvel universes intimidating, it’s a great entry -- with a blessedly planned ending -- into sci-fi-comics.
Happy holidays, and have fun gift shopping!

Hacking Your Mental State
To quote the very first post on this blog; “starting something is easy”. However, we don’t want to just start this thing, we want to finish it too.
Tumblr media
Working from home can be challenging at the best of times. Harry has spent most of his career doing it, but Shane has spent most of his actively avoiding it. This year however, none of us get a choice, the world rolled a 1, and we all have to work out how to do what we’ve got to do while in these particular circumstances we are in. It’s very tempting to throw up your hands and go “too hard, I’ll just wait for the world to be back to normal”, but that is no way to live. If you want to get anything done in life, you have to just roll with the punches, look at the situation and go, “ok, what can we do with this? How can we make this work anyway?”
So, Harry and Shane have decided to make this whole game in a few months, on top of their other day jobs, which themselves are already quite demanding. How do we fit it in? Well, most answers to that question come down to making the best use of time that we can. Firstly we have to be constantly making decisions about what’s worth doing and what isn’t. This is discussed in more detail in the post “A Never Ending Balancing Act”. But it goes beyond just making smart decisions about the fidelity of the game. Often it will come down to doing less revisions of an asset, or having less content in the game, because a game that gets released with less content at least gets released.
Tumblr media
(Walking? Easy. Walking to Perth? Hmm…. not so much)
But, even all that isn’t really the beginning of the story. Sometimes it can be hard just getting started.
This is where the title of this post comes in. This kind of applies across the board, but especially when working from home; there are ways you can trick yourself into being more productive. It might sound strange, but honestly, our brains are often like unruly pets, they aren’t just going to do what’s in our best interests by default, and you often need to “trick” them into desired behaviour.
A naive, yet common approach to “better productivity” and something I’m pretty sure is universal when we are young, I know I definitely both did it and saw it in all my peers when I was at uni, is to just consume more caffeine and pull all nighters to get things done. This is not really recommended. It might work in the short term for something like a game jam, but long term, it will just wreck you, and actually be COUNTER productive.
Tumblr media
(Source: Shane’s actual energy drink can collection)
So, apart from a life long caffeine addiction, taking that approach won’t really get you anywhere, so what will?
The following is a list of tips and tricks we have picked up over the years, from reading books, to experimenting and learning from our own experience:
Just do it for 5 minutes
This is a common one amongst artists, and many of you might have heard this one before. Just getting started can be one of the biggest hurdles to overcome when it comes to productivity. The mountain of work in front of you can seem insurmountable, even if you have managed to conceptually break it down into bite sized tasks, that pile of tasks stretching off to the horizon can still feel like too much, and that can be a major hand brake on progress. So, because our brains are lazy, or more specifically have a lot of inertia (they just keep wanting to do what they are already doing), all you really need to do is convince yourself to just do 5 minute’s worth of work. That doesn’t sound so bad does it? You don’t have to do the whole thing, just 5 minutes, maybe 10. You will then find that after all the effort of getting set up, opening up the project (or in the case of art, getting your pencils/paints/whatever else out), and actually putting pen to paper, the momentum of getting started will carry you through. It will actually be harder to stop than to keep going, and before you know it, you will have done at least an hour or two worth of work.
Walk through a doorway
Ever have that experience of walking into another room and immediately forgetting why? Then when you go back, you remember? You aren’t just going senile, it’s to do with how our brains chunk information, and switch from context to context. Real life physical cues cause our brains to change context, I’m sure there’s probably some perfectly logical evolutionary explanation for it, but it doesn’t really matter why, all you need to know is that it is a thing, and you can use it to your advantage. By putting yourself in a different physical location, you can put yourself in a different mental location too, making it easier to be in “home mode” and “work mode”. Now, this year, we don’t get the “freebie” of going to an office or classroom to do this for us, but we can trick it into happening anyway. If you make sure to set up your space at home in a way that keeps work and leisure separate, even if it means just moving your monitor and chair from one side of your desk to the other, then when you “travel” from home to work, get up, walk to the letterbox, and come back to sit in your new context. Travelling through the doorways while doing so acts as like, mental “page breaks” or chapter markers. Trust me, it works.
Tumblr media
Put shoes on
This is related to the above point. It’s about forcing your mental context. Wearing shoes is something most of us strongly associate with being in “work mode”. I would suspect that most people don’t wear shoes around their own home all day every day, and so the act of putting shoes on is subconsciously associated with going out and doing “non home things”, which for most of us, is probably most commonly work/school. Shane’s version/personal preference for this one is putting on a belt rather than shoes. It amounts to the same thing, although may be less effective. There aren’t really empirical studies on the difference that we are aware of .
Tumblr media
Procrastinate your way to Productivity
This is honestly something I thought I came up with on my own, but I have since read about it a bunch of times, and discovered during conversation that a bunch of other people do it too.
It’s often easy to get distracted, or when working on something have the thought of “this sucks, I wish I was doing something else instead”. Like we touched on in the “Mix of Easy and Hard” post, this is something you can use to your advantage rather than trying to stubbornly avoid, by having an alternative, just as important task to go on with that is more appealing in the moment. If you have a Rock-Paper-Scissors style arrangement of multiple tasks that all trump each other when it comes to procrastination fodder, you can “procrastinate your way to productivity”.... this is one I would say to use with caution though, as you HAVE to ensure you always come back to the original thing, you can’t put stuff off forever. You also have to actually see tasks to completion when you switch to them. You can’t just keep doing nothing, otherwise, unsurprisingly, nothing will get done.
Tumblr media
(This was clearly the result of someone procrastinating something more important)
Put the right music on
Something most people know, even if only subconsciously, is that we tend to be more productive while working to music (I honestly don’t know how musicians do their job then, that sounds like lonely work to me). An extension of that which most programmers at least seem to have a handle on, is that when doing anything that needs the language centre of your brain, like programming for example, or writing of any kind, it’s best to listen to something without lyrics. Classical, EDM, Vaporwave, whatever, but just not something that’s going to interfere with your ability to think words. This doesn’t seem to be as big a deal with art or level design though. Harry and Shane have both found that we are perfectly fine working on visual stuff while listening to basically anything.
One thing I did discover recently though, and in hindsight it’s not at all surprising, but my usual heavy rotation playlists were just getting too repetitive. I’d been listening to the same few favourite tracks over and over. So I started putting on full albums to work to, stuff I hadn’t listened to since I was a teenager/in my early 20s. Apart from the 1-2 “best” tracks off each album that would stay in heavy rotation. What I found was that this was an instant time warp back to my youth. This itself isn’t the revelation, everyone kind of knows that music facilitates mental time travel (the only sense better for it is smell). What was the revelation though, was how much this brought back the fire of enthusiasm for game dev.
There’s this unfortunate trade off that tends to occur over a lifetime, like a metal oxidising, where, when you are young you have all the enthusiasm and drive, but none of the skill or experience to do anything with it… then, the older you get, as experience goes up, the raw enthusiasm tends to blunt and dwindle. BUT, I found that by listening to my favorite music from my youth that I haven’t really listened to much recently, I was able to put myself back in that headspace. So, now that I do have the decades of experience, I am able to trick myself into that high drive mental frame from back when I couldn’t do much with it besides flounder around energetically, but ultimately ineffectively.
This last point I realise isn’t all that much help to most people reading this blog now, but maybe keep it in mind for the future. It might just help you down the track one day.
If you liked the stuff I was talking about in this post, then you absolutely have to read the book “Predictably Irrational”. It should be mandatory reading for any game developer in my opinion.

Holy crap, that was a long one. Thanks for reading to the end.

The best parts of Where We Are audiobook
·         Niall’s sounds the most scripted like he actually took time to think about these questions, and write down his responses.
·         He has one of the best vocabularies in the band.
·         “Didn’t get to finish school or do his exams.”
·         The fact that there was one suitcase in Niall’s house that they actually referred to as “the little suitcase.”
·         Laughing when he said, “Obviously we’ve managed to last more than six months.”
·         “Slugged it out in the back of a Mercedes van?” Slugged it out? In a Mercedes Niall, really?
·         “The band’s horizon’s seemed to be getting bigger and bigger every day.”
·         About the fans: “The fans are out of this world helping us.” He loves us.
·         Talking about when he got kicked out of a cab when they heard they got number one. “Me and my friend were just punching the head off each other and having a laugh.”
·         “Struts.”
·         “I don’t really get homesick where as some of the lads would, but it’s not going to last forever so might as well enjoy it as much as I can now.”
·         About the trip to Ghana. “People out there are incredible, their spirits are mindboggling. You can only try your best for them when you admire them so much.” He was great talking about this.
·         He has the best perspective about the trip out of all the boys. When he’s talking about the water and how he’s got a fridge at home full of it and taps, but they don’t have a bit of it. You can tell that he appreciated and really felt what the trip was supposed to be about.
·         “For a man who loves his sleep that can only be good to be fair. I do waste a lot of my life sleeping.”
·         “YOU EITHER WANT TO BE PAPPED OR YOU DON’T.” He didn’t scream that, I just thought all caps were important there.
·         “do the job so home then mostly sit in my house. I don’t go on many holidays. I prefer to sit in my house mostly.”
·         “London Premiere best day he’s had in his career to date.” Then he goes on to name 800 other things that he liked too, “but the film premiere is 100% right up there. It was a huge moment for us…..”
·         “Them two idiots up the back.” Him and Louis at the Premiere/
·         “In typical One Direction style we were terrible at it.”
·         Success of Midnight Memories “We were just delighted.” I love how he says delighted.
·         “He brought me down to Chelsea and I became part of the furniture down there.” About his rehab after his knee surgery.
·         “We were confident of One Direction, and we work hard to make the band succeed.”
·         “Trepidation.” Great Word.
·         “Typical mad One Direction Style.”
·         “Croke Park was a special one.”
·         Best Ending: “but you know what? I’m still mad about being in this band.”
  Liam
·         “I’d come home completely covered in mud after playing football, eventually I had a pair of trousers for every single day of the week cause it was impossible for my mom to keep up with the washing.”
·         “Sitting in half my classes covered in mud.”
·         “My dad was amazing. He was my driving force to get out there and perform to people.”
·         “Maybe he wasn’t that crazy after all, maybe he can just see the future.”
·         “You know about all the dreadful disappointment about being rejected them like the overwhelming excitement of being put into a band with these other four lads, but to this day the moment they revealed they were putting us into One Direction is still the most amazing memory it’s still hard to believe.” They always talked about this, but never described like that.
·         “It’s hard to think we were thrown into the deep end so quick.”
·         “Our guardian angel was our fans.” Liam loves us too. Bless his little heart.
·         “an army of fans out there promoting and championing our band which you know you really can’t buy. So brilliant.” Keep the compliments coming.
·         “I feel like we haven’t really celebrated that.” Talking about the first album tour.
·         “You have to respect the idea that you just can’t walk out on to an arena stage.”
·         “Proper New York cold.”
·         How he says Lady Gaga and crazy in this sentence here “I think we set a new record beating Lady Gaga which was craazzyy.” It was funny.
·         “I remember staying up til stupid o’clock in the morning signing 500 CDS.”
·         The school trip story to the O2 a.k.a the Millennium Dome: “but I was just a dippy kid back then so my parents thought Ruth (his sister) would remember and appreciate the day more than me cause I’d been just bouncing off the walls and doing stupid stuff. So I did a little chuckle to myself when I got there ass I actually got to the millennium dome for free.”
·         “This job can make you very self centered if you’re not careful.”
·         “and I was absolutely terrible at listening which I always have been.”
·         Class of 92 movie premiere: “He (David Beckham) like clocked me from across the room and you know when lads give each other the nod? Well, like I kind of gave him the nod cause he was saying like wazup (yes, wazup, that is not a typo), and he gave me the nod back, and then to my like shock he came over and said like hey how’s it going you alright Liam and shook my hand, and I was like this is mad like David Beckham just gave me the manly nod from the other side of the room and that’s like the sickest thing like….”
·         YES HE SAID LIKE THAT MANY TIMES. IT IS LIAM’S #FAVORITE WORD.
·         And no, I didn’t make that story up, oh, though I wish I had.
Louis
·         “I think I’ve always had persistence which I suppose I probably got from my mom, uh, she always encouraged me to do what I wanted to do and always just told me to give it my best and that’s what I try to do.”
·         “My mom’s pretty much the first person I go to for advice. You know I have a great relationship with my mom.” The first few minutes are devoted to talking about his momma, and I love that.
·         “We can travel the world which I don’t think, well, I know I wouldn’t have even been to America nevermind all the amazing places we’ve been at this age.”
·         “Doncaster is great, but you know I kind of wanted to see the world.”
·         “Even when we try our hardest to be sensible and mature we don’t do a very good job.”
·         Proof that Louis has seen This is Us, at least more than a couple of times. “You get taken away and bang you’re in this lifestyle and it is very alien.” Paul said nearly this same thing in the movie.
·         He loses his train of thought for a second when he’s talking about where he’s from. “ not many people from Donny record many albums, but anyway.” He says that ending very fast.
·         “There were often times I stand there and wonder how much the comments were relevant to me because my contributions to the band in my opinion at that time were so small.” Poor babe, but look at ya now.
·         “Delighted to be in the band.” Do they all say this word so wonderfully?
·         “It’s only been about since Midnight Memories that album that I’ve really felt comfortable with my voice.”
·         About the fans: “Little superfans trying to spread the word throughout the world.” More proof that Louis literally watches This Is Us every night before he goes to bed. Simon says this near the beginning of the movie, talking about the superfans.
·         The mattress story: “You wouldn’t get that now (the hesitation) they’d be straight down.”
·         “Four countries in four days.” Did he mean states?”
·         About a fan encounter after coming back from a tour. “It all got a bit aggressive I think I got me hoodie ripped off from me and I remember they dragged us into this tiny office with some police officers and the fans were outside surrounding it just banging on the walls. Yeah, it was intense. It definitely made us think there is some proper support there.”
·         About his man crush on David Beckham: “I’ve always idolized David Beckham. I just think he’s the coolest guy ever. Two or three of the lads me him before ME ( His tone is all like, How dare they?), and they had pictures with him right and I just saw these pictures on twitter and I was like what’s going on here I’d love to have met David, Becks, but anyway I did get to meet him in the end. I went to the Class of 92 premiere and uh, I’m just rubbish. I was trying to be cool, but you just can’t. I mean what do you say that is remotely impressive to David Beckham.”
·         He uses we a lot, not really I. It’s we did this, or we wanted that. That’s very interesting.
·         About Midnight Memories: “That we had a real, that we felt like we had a proper creative input on, not just a little bit, but we felt that we had a say over the whole thing.”
·         “it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to make music.”
·         “We’re very lucky that we have great fans that I feel like if we messed up on stage I wouldn’t really feel that embarrassed because I feel like they’re so behind you anyway that it’s cool and they kind of put you at ease too which is a nice feeling which is why it almost encourages us to mess about and be a little off the cuff on stage because they made it easy for us in that way.”
·         “I just feel like a Donny lad that got lucky.”
·         “Maybe when were older and wiser we might be able to put some perspective on it, but….it’s cool.
Zayn
·         “My own personality, individually….”
·         About playing characters/ acting: “When you’re in a band and you’re just portraying who you are as maybe as you know as a musical artist if you’re just trying to sing and be able the music then you’re just being yourself and I think behind that is, is probably the coolest thing to do, but at the same time it also adds pressure because that’s just you and that’s just who you are.”
·         Even to the sense that like when I was twelve or thirteen, I kind of still thought there’d be a chance I’d get super powers and be a superhero. So, I was definitely a dreamer. It took me a bit longer to grow out of that.” He shouldn’t have. I liked this version of Zayn better to be honest.
·         Reiterating: “Yeah, I was definitely a dreamer.”
·         The story we’ve heard 8,000 times about how Louis told him about the plane doing the loopdy loop the first time he was ever on a plane. Like you can just see Louis, stoic face, calm, just flat out lying to Zayn just to mess with him.
·         While on the X-Factor: “And we were in this little box room with bunk beds and a single bed.” Okay, so, who demanded the single bed?
·         Also the X-Factor: “And just seeing other people’s behavior, and you know how they would act and how they would do something or whatever and we were like maybe necessarily we don’t want to do it that way maybe we want to be a bit cooler about that you know we don’t want to wear our sunglasses inside and be weird.”
·         Liam mentioned some cattiness from the other contestants during his bit, I wonder how much of that they faced directly.
·         “Instead of being something else we were just interested in each other, and looking after each other, and being a band and being what we were about.”
·         About people recognizing them from the X-Factor: “one of the biggest shows…in the U.K. at that point.” Shady….or no?
·         “Somebody else…” “a different band” I’m pretty sure he’s the only one who didn’t name Big Time Rush directly.
·         About the blonde streak: “I forgot that I had the Olympics the next day?” Really???? Side eyes him suspiciously.
·         Good phrase: “You’ve made more of a noise.” I liked that.
·         “Sometimes I look to solo artists and feel a bit sorry for them.” Huh?
Harry
·         “I think I had a nice upbringing. My family was really nice to me.” Then he laughs because was that too sarcastic or not? Laugh, Harry, laugh so they know you were just joking.
·         “I grew up thinking everyone’s equal, everyone’s the same.”
·         When he looks at stuff from the X-Factor: “I look like I’m about twelve, and uh, I think it’s amazing to try to comprehend the fact that I was a kid.” – I read that way too heartbreakingly than I’m sure he meant it.
·         “Walking into a record label I always felt like I was walking onto a different planet.”
·         Describing the record studio: “There was like marble everywhere and it was all like shiney.”
·         About being excited about releasing the first album, the first songs after all the support the fans had given them before there was even an album. “It was time for us to give them something back.”
·         “I think we were just praying that people liked it because if they didn’t they’d be like uh, oh okay, maybe not I’ll go home.”
·         “The album had just gone number two,” mumbles…”thanks, Rhianna.” This kid is such a dork.
·         Then he talks about his hard on for sunshine, and all things being outside for at least five minutes.
·         Example: “Even if your car breaks down you’re just chilling in the sun for a bit. It’s actually not that bad.”
·         When they talk about coming back to the U.K. after that first major tour and getting chased by all those girls they all sound so excited, like of I got me hoodie ripped off and Liam lost a shoe and girls were banging on the walls and police had to escort us out, but It was totally great, would recommend 10 out of 10… except for Niall, I’m pretty sure the poor kid was traumatized…. That, or they are still in that I don’t want to offend anyone area.
·         Example: “We ended up going out in like a riot van which was probably a little over the top, but uh,…. It was fun.”
·         How he says, “Shopping mall.”
·         About all the promo and etc. “It was important for us to like justify why the album was number one.”
·         “Standing on the stage used to make me really nervous.” But look at you now….
·         About the second album: “I think you just want to people to hear it, and think it’s wicked.”
·         About putting out new material: “I think first of all you want people to not hate it then if people don’t’ hate it you want them to like it and if people like it you’re like uh,…..”
·         His thoughts on getting number one: “Then I was like sick, then it hit me.”
·         “My job, if you can call it a job.”
·         The trip to Ghana. He talks about it so well. “That it is different when you see it on TV than when you witness it in real life. The thing that triggers a different emotion is like all your senses are taken over by what’s going on, the smell, the smoke, the heat….”
·         “I think a big difference is made up of a bunch of little differences.”
·         “I think gossip is natural.” That would explain his sort of distance that he puts between him and any sort of news that goes out about him. It’s because he knows that its constantly in flux, and anything he says will only be magnified, and that it will make it stay around longer if he does. There just hasn’t been anything out that he really feels like he needs to comment on, but I think he would if he felt it was necessary.
·         “It’s important to remember that the job and the lifestyle aren’t normal.”
·         “It’s always going to be us the people who went through it.”

Tagged :D
I was tagged twice (again??) – so have more answers under the cut :D
This one was by @gummicows, thank youuu :D
1) Has any of the fandoms you have been in disgusted you? Yeahhh but I tend to just avoid the people that for example ship things I don’t?
2) If you wanted to change your url, what would it be? I’m actually very happy with my url :D
3) Do you have any hobbies? UHMM so many??? Writing, drawing, singing (solo & choir), skiing, reading journaling, cooking (occasionally), collecting books (does that count)…? I enjoy crocheting too sometimes, and I make videos :D
4) How socially awkward are you (stories anyone ;D)? I’m actually pretty… confident, most of the time? Obviously I mess up sometimes but I wouldn’t call myself socially awkward. I get comfortable in social situations relatively quickly, unless there’s people around that I seriously dislike ^^’
5) Do you have a musical preference? That depends on what I’m doing and how I’m feeling :D For singing, I prefer Disney songs or songs from Musicals (Les Mis, PotO and Hamilton own my ass). For writing I like to listen to instrumentals and soundtracks (also works well when I’m having conversations that require my full attention :D). For driving, I prefer rock music? My dad introduced me to a lot of 80s rock music when I was little :D And then I also really enjoy pop and indie music? I like uplifting songs best, and I pay a lot of attention to the lyrics most of the time ^^
6) Are there any books that hold a special place in your heart? …do you have 3 hours?
The short version of my answer is yes, there are many. Some examples of which are:
Harry Potter by JKR (because those were the first books I read on my own, and in English, too? That was a big deal for me, a bilingual German kid xD My teachers let me read under my desk in our English lessons in primary school :D – and because Harry Potter made me dream, and made me want to write stories myself.),
Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini (because it left an immense impact on me that few other books will ever have? The story is astounding, it’s written in such an engaging way, and I just… *clenches fist*),
The Hours by Michael Cunningham (given to me by an English teacher after he read some of my original work – it’s been really inspirational for me, and stylistically SO INTERESTING??)
Die Stadt der Träumenden Bücher by Walter Moers (yes, a German book, I prefer to read books in the language they were originally published in, even if I generally prefer to read in English – in any case this book blew me away with its creativity and wit and just the general… richness of the world the author creates? It’s fascinating. I believe it’s called The City of Dreaming Books in the English translation)
The Chaos Walking Trilogy by Patrick Ness (which is just… I love the concept, I love the characters, I love how it’s done – just, all of it. It’s fantastic.)
A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (because it is intriguing and heartfelt and hilarious at times, in a morbid sort of way, and it taught me a lot of big words as a kid in a non-condescending kind of way xD I used to have the audiobooks as well as physical copies and those are books and CDs that I handled VERY, VERY OFTEN.)
(I’m limiting this to six now bc this is getting long but I have like 20 more, if you want recommendations hmu, send me an ask :D)
7) Any movies you’d recommend? Ohhhh, boy – I’m Marvel and Disney trash and there’s not much more to it. Big Hero 6 was my absolute favorite until Moana came along (before that it was The Little Mermaid, probably? Ehh), I love everything concerning Captain America and Iron Man (ahhhh), I also really enjoyed Star Wars (All of the older ones, and The Force Awakens was awesome, as was Rogue One) and I have, surprisingly, seen all the James Bond movies except the most recent one? xD It was a family thing. I also enjoyed the HP movies even though I liked the books much more, and Fantastic Beasts was, well, FANTASTIC.
Oh, ohhh and I love Ghibli movies? Ponyo was adorable, I loved Howl’s Moving Castle (because I loved those books so much too?!?!?) and Spirited Away – those movies just make me feel so happy?? Ahh, and one of my favorite animated films is Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) because it is just BREATHTAKINGLY beautiful?? It is just gorgeous to look at. 8) What is a phrase you commonly use? …I don’t think I have many English ones here because most of my rl conversations happen in German xD I bet I do have a bunch of phrases I use a lot in writing, though none are coming to mind right now. 9) What is the first thing you notice when you see someone? The way they treat other people. Their body language and the words they use when they’re talking to someone they see as an equal or someone they think of as “beneath them”, versus how they talk to superiors. I pay a lot of attention to words and honestly barely any to appearance (mostly because I find it difficult to look at people directly? It’s an issue. I can’t remember faces at all, but you can bet I’ll remember the things you said).
10) Have you ever fainted or passed out before? Yup, in school when we were forced to do a 30 minute run at 40°C ^^ fun times. It’s been a couple years though xD
My questions:
1. Something you wish your parents had taught you?
2. Something you want to change about yourself?
3. Something you hope to never change about yourself?
4. Describe your best friend or a very close friend in 5 words.
5. Your favorite place to be?
6. Favorite artist (musician, actor, writer, artist, fanartist/fanfic writer? Pick one, or two, or all?)?
7. Website you spend most time on?
8. A dream for the future?
9. Something you’re proud of.
10. Recommend something! A movie, a song, a book, a fic – anything! :D
(I tag @chxngsey, @seijouho, @ghost--fox, @heirxx, @cheatos, @missellaineous, @fandang1, @screamingnitrogenchallenge, @joanofarcticmonkeys, @cheetahleopard, @lalikaa - you’re all welcome to do the above tag and my 10 questions, or the tag below, or both :D @gummicows and @iwazumie feel free to do the ones you haven’t? xD)
…and this tag is from @iwazumie, thank youuu :D
Relationship status: single Lipstick or Chapstick: *whispers* both Last song listened to: …surprisingly, I haven’t listened to music today except when I was in the car with my brother… he was in charge of it though cause my radio’s broken, and I don’t know the titles of the techno stuff he listens to xD Last movie I watched: Moana (…for the third time.. whoops) Top 3 shows: FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BROTHERHOOD *hyperventilates*, Haikyuu, Bakuman? (I’ve seen so many, it’s hard to pick just 3 ok?? Noragami, Barakamon, Baccano!, Durarara!!, Death Note, Soul Eater, One Punch Man…?) … and if we’re talking about stuff that’s not anime… Game of Thrones, Supernatural (though my enthusiasm is waning), currently Brooklyn Nine Nine :D Top 3 characters: Edward Elric (I love him), Iwaizumi Hajime (I LOVE HIM), Olivier Armstrong (She’ll kick my ass and I will thank her for it) Top 3 ships: IwaOi, EdWin, Yato/Hiyori

Tagging Game: About the Writer
Rules of the Game: Answer these questions and tag 10 blogs you’d like to know better.
Tagged by @maybeillwriteit Thank you so much for tagging me! I’m sorry it’s taken me a while to get to it: the internet at my apartment has been out for a couple days. (I’m doing this is bits between tasks at work, shhhh)
1.     Nickname: I go by Katy, which is a shortened version of my full first name. I was called “Kyou” through a good part of high school. No real nicknames anymore. My younger sibling ( @terramythos) calls me “sis”, but that’s about it.
2.     Zodiac: Pisces (Western); Dragon (Eastern)
3.     Height: 5′4, about
4.     Time: 10:56
5.     Favorite Band/Artist: my musical tastes are all over the place, lol, and sometimes rotate. Silversun Pickups, Poets of the Fall, VNV Nation, Gorillaz, MSMR, SIAMES, Akira Yamaoka, Yoko Kanno are pretty much always in there.
6.     Song Stuck in My Head: My Dark Disquiet by Poets of the Fall (IT’S SO DRAMATIC)
7.     Last Movie I Saw: In theaters: “Us”, which I really enjoyed. In general: “Jonathan” on Netflix. It was all right.
8.     Last Thing I Googled: "untenable” because a coworker wanted the exact definition.
9.     Other Blogs: This is my main, though I’m slowly trying to get my butt in gear to make a writing-specific sideblog, which will be @unlike-clockwork, but it’s empty at the moment. I have two pretty much abandoned blogger blogs, one for horror movie reviews and one for hiking and other nature-ish stuff I would do. I’m also slightly active on dreamwidth as “mistressofmuses”.
10.  Do I Get Asks?:  Very rarely. I’m not as active as I’d like to be, so that’s not surprising. But always feel free to ask me stuff! Or tag me in things like this! I love doing them.
11.  Why This Username?: I started using this username back in probably... 2005 or so on ff.net, and it stuck.
12.  Following: 364, but I did a pretty big purge a while back, and the number dropped when a lot of people I used to follow left during the nsfw ban shakeup.
13.  Average Amount of Sleep: Lately it’s been unpredictable. Ideally I aim for at least 7 hours, but lately have gotten a lot of nights that are closer to 5 or 6 (or less.)
14.  Lucky Number: 24
15.  What Am I Wearing: Long black skirt, purple tank top, longer black lacey overshirt. (”Business casual” for work is still a mystery to me at times.)
16.  Dream Job: Reading audiobooks. And obviously I enjoy writing.
17.  Dream Trip: I would love to travel through parts of Europe, especially Ireland and Norway.
18.  Favorite Food: I’m pretty much just stealing @maybeillwriteit‘s answer, but pasta with cheese is hard to go wrong with! I also have discovered just how much I love zucchini, and there’s a baked zucchini recipe that uses SO MUCH CHEESE and red peppers that I make and it’s so good.
19.  Instruments I Play: I played cello badly for eight years. :) But that was a long time ago.
20.  Eye Colour: A big ol’ question mark. Hazel generally covers it, but I have super minor sectoral heterochromia, so it’s small defined sections of brown within the blue-green.
21.  Hair Colour: Medium reddish brown, some redder and blonde looking highlights in the sun.
22.  Aesthetic: Like, the personal aesthetic I probably have? Casual geeky goth with jewel tone and/or rainbow accents. Though to be honest, I wish I felt confident enough to branch out (ha, unintentional pun) into mori style. Though a couple people I saw answered with dramatic aesthetic meme style descriptions so... “Crushed pine needles, windowsills covered in houseplants, sweetened coffee forgotten on a side table, citrus fruit, and quiet late nights when no one else is awake.”
23.  Languages I Speak: Only English fluently. Very small bits of German and Japanese from language classes in high school/college, but I was never more than a beginner.
24.  Most Iconic Song: I don’t even know how to answer this. In lieu of a real answer, the song I’ve listened to the most per iTunes is “You’re Not Here” from Silent Hill 3, by Akira Yamaoka and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn.
25.  Random Fact: Since this is sort of a writeblr game, I’ll try to make it relevant. I’m trying to balance my work on fanfic and original fic, and hope to figure out a way to make some sort of graphic for each WIP so I can start sharing info about them! Seeing people excited and engaged in the writeblr community has made me a lot more interested in my own works and sharing them.
For people to tag, I have completely lost track of who has already done this! (Especially since I’ve been mostly gone the last few days.) So I’ll tag a couple not-strictly-writeblr mutuals in case they’re interested: @terramythos, @sheisstrangerthanfiction, @jessielefey (no pressure if you don’t want to). And if you are a writeblr who hasn’t done this yet, then I just tagged you, too! Yes, you!

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook
New Post has been published on https://ezaudiobooks.com/harry-potter-audio-books/harry-potter-and-the-deathly-hallows-audiobook/
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook
“I’m almost scared to admit this, but one thing has stopped me collapsing in a puddle of misery on the floor. While each of the previous Potter books has strong claims on my affections, Deathly Hallows is my favourite, and that is the most wonderful way to finish the series.” – J. K. Rowling
Death is just going to another world, like a seafaring friend; they still live in each other. Because they absolutely need to exist, love and living in that love is everywhere. In this holy mirror, they look at each other, talking freely and pure.
This is the comfort of friends, that even if they are considered dead, their friendship and their relationship, in the most common sense, still exist, because of their own injustice
About Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook 2
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a fantasy novel written by British author J. K. Rowling and the seventh and final novel of the Harry Potter series. The book was released on 21 July 2007, ending the series that began in 1997 with the publication of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone.
A spectacular finish to a phenomenal series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is a bittersweet read for fans. The journey is hard, filled with events both tragic and triumphant, the battlefield littered with the bodies of the dearest and despised, but the final chapter is as brilliant and blinding as a phoenix’s flame, and fans and skeptics alike will emerge from the confines of the story with full but heavy hearts, giddy and grateful for the experience.
Plot
Following another deeply troubled year at Hogwarts, described in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, at the end of which Dumbledore is killed by the ever-deceptive Severus Snape, Harry begins the final volume of the series in hiding. When the spell that has kept him safe until his seventeenth birthday expires, he and his helpers are immediately attacked by Voldemort, suffering casualties.
Unable to return to Hogwarts, Harry is forced to go on the run with Ron and Hermione, hunting desperately for the “horcruxes” that contain fragments of Voldemort’s soul and thus maintain his invulnerability. The search for the horcruxes is complicated when Harry learns of the existence of another set of magical objects—the “deathly hallows”—which might also be vital to the settlement of the final battle. Voldemort is unable to give his complete attention to the quest to kill Harry because he is searching for one of the hallows: an undefeatable wand.
Uncertain as to whether to give priority to the remaining horcruxes or the hallows, Harry continues to evade death, albeit narrowly, until he is forced to return to Hogwarts in order to complete his search. The castle housing Hogwarts Academy then becomes the last fortress holding out against Voldemort’s rise to power, subject to intensive siege and violent bombardment.
The remnants of Dumbledore’s Army and the Order of the Phoenix mount a heroic defense of Hogwarts in the attempt to win Harry enough time to finish his quest, suffering heavy casualties in the process. The conflict reaches the limit of desperation when it becomes evident that Harry harbors one of the fragments of Voldemort’s soul in his own flesh. It appears that Harry cannot kill his enemy without sacrificing himself in the process, but that sacrifice might also make Voldemort invincible.
Other things
Deathly Hallows shattered sales records upon release, surpassing marks set by previous titles of the Harry Potter series. It holds the Guinness World Record for most novels sold within 24 hours of release, with 8.3 million sold in the US alone and 2.65 million in the UK. Generally well received by critics, the book won the 2008 Colorado Blue Spruce Book Award, and the American Library Association named it a “Best Book for Young Adults”.
A film adaptation of the novel was released in two parts: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 1 in November 2010, and Part 2 in July 2011.
It is followed by a sequel to the original series, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook Review
Narrator
There are two versions of the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook free, one is narrated by Stephen Fry, the other Jim Dale. Now, you can enjoy both of them on EZ Audiobooks.
The Deathly Hallows Audiobook by Stephen Fry: Stephen Fry makes the characters even more vivid. His voice for Hagrid is low, gruff and gentle, just what you would expect. Hermione sounds incredibly precocious and annoying but gradually becomes less so as the book progresses. The story wraps you in a warm cloak of positive feelings, happiness and a sense of belonging. Having Fry read such a lovely story to you makes it all the more comforting and enjoyable. Even though Harry Potter is J K Rowlings first audiobook and her prose may be flawed in places, (particularly in the beginning describing life with the Dursleys) Harry Potter is undoubtedly a classic made even more magical by Stephen Fry. I highly recommend this audiobook for all ages.
The Deathly Hallows Audiobook by Jim Dale: Jim Dale is another fantastic narrator. Born in England, Dale also has an English accent. Dale is a voice artist, and definitely weighted towards to the dramatized end of the scale. Dale invites a sense of urgency in his voice, and has you on your toes. This increased dramatization, although predominantly great, I feel it is sometimes a little over the top.
Dale is magician in character range; he created 134 voices for the Harry Potter Audiobooks series. This series has given Dale more awards than any narrator previous. His prestige, and breadth of bestseller coverage is rather astonishing.
Deathly Hallows Audiobook Story
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Audiobook 3
These books are pure magic and a benchmark in the genre. J.K. Rowling takes a classic idea of young children heading to boarding school, and put’s it on it’s head, generally we would expect all the exciting things to happen while on holiday – but not this time.
The story follows Harry’s first year at Hogwarts, a school for witches and wizards. We enter in on a depressing scene with his relatives the Dursley’s (whom he lives with) and Harry’s general day to day struggle living in a muggle (non-magical) household. At this point everything is confusing, and we know little, however everything is about to change and as a listener we are about to embark on a wild and captivating journey to discover Harry’s birthright.
The Harry Potter audiobooks series may have been written and narrated with children in mind, but that hasn’t stopped thousands of mums and dads giving the first book in the series a five star rating. Harry Potter and the Philosophers stone is an introduction into a world of of optimism and hope, where anything is possible. As a result, this book speaks to a younger audience naturally, however this is a must listen for everyone. How could you not want to live in a world like that?! The books are creative and fun.
