17. The Matrix: Resurrections

I fucking LOVED this movie. So much good stuff in it, perfectly continues a lot of the themes that I liked from the first movie, just overall a really fun experience. Glad I watched it on my birthday.

Pitch Idea for The Matrix 4

So I realize that I literally just said that you can’t make the 4th Matrix film good without compromising the message but I cannot help myself:

Idea 1: Trinity is the MC.

So like, I would to have seen a film where Trinity, resurrected for similar reasons to the original film, is the new perspective character. Like Neo, she’s tired, defeated, and struggling to stay above water. She’s actually aware that she’s stuck in the matrix, but she chooses to remain plugged in because Neo is missing for some reason.

The film makes it clear that Trinity dying and coming back has turned her into something of an anomaly herself, and part of her journey consists of unlearning her preconceptions about the concept of The One, while also surrounding herself with those who basically deify Neo, while also also still being in love with him and really looking up to him.

Meanwhile, Neo has been on a higher journey, trying to create peace between the machines and humans in the real world, and trying to answer for himself the question of long term peace. Neo is sort of playing a larger chess game now, and he’s very much riding the line between being the savior of humanity, and a collaborator with the machines--having accepted that as a “man born inside the matrix” his connection to the machine world is stronger than he originally realized.

Not really sure where I’d take the movie to get to an ending--maybe Trinity finally finds Neo but realizes he’s on a higher mission so she leaves and he stays behind. Before Trinity can leave though, Neo teaches her to become an anomaly much like himself, helping her to realize that the One concept was designed to control humans, and that she is the true anomaly in the system. Trinity, now rescued in the real world, returns to a life of fighting the machines and trying to get Neo similarly freed from the Matrix.

This is my favorite idea--it’s definitely not a whole thought, but I really like the idea of having to deconstruct their semi-religious beliefs about the matrix, while also juxta positioning it against Trinity’s own deification of Neo as her long lost savior and lover.

Idea 2:

This is my less favorite of the two but: A film similar to the original but Neo realizes he’s in the Matrix much earlier, and has just sort of given up. He navigates the system with considerable ease, but never actually leaves the safe pasture. He stays partly to try and free Trinity, but also because being around her is all he wants--even if she doesn’t know she wants to leave yet.

He struggles knowing that he fought so hard and still lives under the same oppression--and this is the major roadblock to him being the One again. Like the original film, the story is about how the Matrix weaponizes ideas against you, and about how complex systems of control can really be--up to and including a version where Neo and others in the Matrix are fully aware of it’s existence, but stay because the system is holding them hostage in other ways, and because it feel insurmountable to actually defeat it.

This plot would admittedly work better with another protag--up to and including Trinity--but I think Keanu does noir-style scenes really well and want to see more of that.

Idea 3:

A complete spin-off story that takes place mostly in the real world, with only occasional forays into the Matrix. It follows X (placeholder name), an ex-coppertop who is really struggling with leaving the Matrix behind. He explores more of the real world than we’ve seen in past films, he fights sentinels with those cool lightning guns, and he is trying really hard to not return to the Matrix.

And he talks about it, a lot--his life in the Matrix was good, wholesome. He has, presently, a family still hooked up to the Matrix and on occasion he’ll visit. There’s peace between 01 and Zion, so he has the ability to visit dear old dad who’s still hooked up, and who isn’t aware that his son is a kung-fu vigilante or that he’s trapped in a simulation.

X also struggles with how the Machine’s system of control extends into the real world: The ways the machines would keep Zion isolated, herded, controlled, the way that they would keep people inside the Matrix dependent on luxury.

X realizes that the real world has a Matrix of it’s own, and he’s working to understand what being free means. That comes with helping to free other minds, but it could also come with realizing that the machines are not 100% evil. I don’t have an ending in mind for this either, again sorry, this is mostly just a premise.
