You uhh... you wanna talk about the med school residency, bud?
oh lol i didn't think i was gonna get an ask about it, thanks for asking. i'm actually not quite in residency yet, just med school. 2nd year
just so happens to be the part of med school where you study for this fuckmassive 8 hour exam named USMLE step 1 that covers every part of the curriculum (and also a bunch of outside shit since too many students passing = less money the host company gets to charge us to retake the exam). for perspective, the summary book for it named first aid is ~750 pages long and everything in there is fair game.
people regularly study for this exam with a schedule of ~10 hours a day for 6 weeks straight no breaks. that's what I'm doing now but i wanted to be careful so i planned mine to be 9 weeks. that's bc my med school itself didn't prepare us well for that despite us paying 60k+ tuition a year. a real shit tier lectures and wasted money type of thing. people also regularly experience both physical and mental health problems from studying for the exam to the point it's just expected
i've heard things from current M3s (3rd year med school students) about 24 hour straight shifts while having to study for board exams at the same time. also stuff about residents often having 80 hour work weeks, sometimes without one/both weekend days off. the work itself is naturally strenuous since it's doctor stuff. the sort of situation that gets overworked residents into car crashes from falling asleep at the wheel due to how exhausted they are. fun little article about that phenomenon here. notice that first line "Resident physicians often work longer than 24 consecutive hours with little or no sleep." btw residents get paid ~$20 an hour on average
currently wondering what to do with the fact the next couple years for me are gonna be the (probably? hopefully it won't get worse later?) shittiest time of my life. i can't really get out of that without wasting the preparation i did specifically for this, aka SHITLOAD of grinding i've been doing since start of university so close to a decade now. i realize at this point that this field might not be for me but the concept of exiting now and losing so many years of my life to stress and endless studying for nothing in return + a fuckload of debt makes me pretty unhappy
this probably sounds whiny or something but i'm in not a great spot mentally tbh.

Be Brave Adachi, or the musical shaping of episodes 1-4
Part 1: Episode 1
Ok folks, buckle up. @ohmypreciousgirl asked me for more music meta and I need exactly ZERO arm twisting for that to happen, so I immediately put on my listening ears and musicologist hat and started my eleventy first rewatch. Since I’m currently only through episode 4 on this rewatch, and I have a page and a half of notes, I’m gonna put in a Read More so that I don’t take up the next 5 miles of the tags. You might be interested if:
You like music
You’re interested in detailed analysis of character development
You’re wondering why the heck those scenes where Adachi is having all the anxiety are so dang effective.
The answer, of course, is that the music helps to shape the exact moments that Adachi makes steps towards character growth. Under the cut, you’ll find out exactly how it’s doing that.
This will be a 4-part series, running over the next 4 days because I got halfway through episode 3 and realized that yall did NOT want a 10 page paper in a single tumblr post. Plus then I can extend the series to include the rest of the episodes later.
So. Without further ado.
Episode 1  (If you’d like to watch/listen along, cue up 19:45 in episode 1* now.)
At the beginning of the show, we’re introduced to Adachi, the shy, introverted, anxious klutz. He tells us lots of things about himself, most of which include some reference to either his lack of bravery or his self-esteem which is currently so low that it seems to be floating somewhere in the Marianas Trench. Aside from the opening scene with the bike (which many of us, myself included, have hypothesized comes from some kind of future) the music is mostly laid-back, a little jazzy, and repetitive. Adachi’s office scenes come with a walking bass/guitar line that never really finds a melody, and reminds me of nothing more than generic 90s/early 2000s slice-of-life “this is every day” music. His Adachi-at-home music is gently strummed guitar, slow and kind of lethargic, mirroring the way Adachi just floats through life. The main exception is Adachi’s monologue on Kurosawa, which is fast paced, march-like, and jaunty - a reflection of how Adachi sees Kurosawa before the events of the show.
And then, at the end of the episode, that changes, and we get something new for the first time. Adachi is processing the new revelation that Kurosawa actually does like him, and he has just finished telling himself that Kurosawa must have gone crazy to like someone like him. There has been no musical accompaniment since they were in the office together. Kurosawa wraps the scarf around Adachi’s neck and Adachi hears Kurosawa’s inner monologue, cataloging the things he likes about Adachi.
This speech is obviously a turning point for Adachi, but we can be more specific than that. For Kurosawa’s first couple of points, we’re still in silence, and Adachi is looking down. We can imagine that he’s doing his own mental list that starts something like “yeah but…” But after the line “He’s actually an extremely kind and nice guy,” Adachi looks up at Kurosawa, and finally, after two whole minutes of silence in the soundtrack, a new kind of cue comes in.
This new cue is the antithesis of the rest of the soundtrack. It’s fully acoustic (with a little bit of reverb) and played on the piano, an instrument that the composer has not yet used. What’s more, the fragment that the piano repeats is completely unstable. We have no idea what key we’re in (yet. Spoiler, it’ll be A-major, eventually). [warning: technical stuff starts here, if you don’t care about specifics, jump to the /endTechnical tag] It starts with a first inversion D-major chord (in later iterations, IV^6) that attempts to resolve to G-D-A which is NOT a chord, or rather, it could be any number of chords but without a 3rd somewhere in there we don’t know which it is.
Ok, ok, so, resolution failed. Let’s try again! D-major^6 and then instead of going down to D, the A goes up a M3 to C-sharp, making G-E-C-sharp - WHOOPS that’s a tritone, less resolution than the first time. To be fair, the tritone is pretty far apart, and there’s an E floating around in the middle, so it doesn’t feel as teeth grinding-ly gross as your average Danse Macabre, but it SURE AS HELL doesn’t feel resolved either. [/endTechnical]
And we go back and forth between these two VERY unresolved phrases. It’s like we’re (read: Adachi is) stuck asking new questions that he doesn’t have any answers for. It’s unsettling and we spend almost 30 seconds just sitting there feeling unresolved, trying again and again in different octaves, with slightly different notes in the (almost inaudible) string parts-- nothing works. Adachi is not ready to move beyond the questions themselves, so the music doesn’t either, ending on a high unresolved note with Kurosawa’s “Wait.”^
And that’s IT. No resolution. The next musical cue is after enough dead space that our metaphorical ear palate has been cleansed (which is good, cause we jump from quasi-A major to a sequential figure with at least FOUR FLATS - about as distant a key as you can get). To get resolution for the Questioning cue, we’re going to have to wait.
And wait and wait, because that’s it for tonight yall! Episode 2 coming tomorrow!
Continue to part 2
[Although, real quick, before we move on to Episode 2, I just wanna mention that I love that Adachi’s fears about Kurosawa’s crush are scored with a very speedy bebop style cue while Kurosawa’s actual fantasies might as well be a Bach Oratorio COMPLETE WITH METRONOME, because if you needed to shorthand “antithesis” musically I’m not sure I could think of a better way of doing it, short of using screamo metal and Hildegard von Bingen lol.]
*All video timings and quotes are from Irozuku Subs videos. If you’re watching somewhere else, your mileage may vary slightly.
^As an English speaker I love the parallelism in how American English speakers use a rising tone to indicate questions, but I don’t know enough about Japanese to know if that transfers.

Reading Homestuck^2 as of Page 28.  I’m glad we’re resolving the lack of conversations between these two, it’s really working well so far.  > ==>
So we’re calling this a “prattle”, huh?
I’m not sure how to describe everything that’s going on here, this playful skip of depicting actions by narrating them intentionally, but I like it somehow.
Some stuff about ABBA, too, not that I’d get it as I don’t really music.
Hm, interesting discussion about these capsules.
DIRK: But beyond that, they're a convenient and effective means of subtle psychic suggestion at a distance. TEREZI: 1T DO3SNT S33M 4LL TH4T SUBTL3 TO M3 DIRK: Well no, it's not. DIRK: At least, not for us right now. DIRK: But that's because your presence as a guiding influence has been revealed. DIRK: Earlier, when I hadn't realized you were there, it was more difficult to discern.
Yep, setting up mechanics for us to play with later.  This is nice.
DIRK: That's what you get for nosing around in our secret storeroom. DIRK: I'd ask you not to contaminate the ectobiological equipment with your own genetic material, but, TEREZI: Y34H TOO L4T3, SORRY >:|
Dammit, that’s right.  You’re seeding a whole damn planet and time-traveling forward somehow so you can hijack a session, right?  I can’t see the game treating you kindly for that sort of indiscretion.
Eugh, creepy.  Terezi can still be controlled directly, and she knows it.  And there’s shit he wants to hide from her.  Euugh.
(Is it John’s corpse or something?)
> Dirk: Get this show on the road.
Tumblr media
A “N31GH” code, huh?  Good taste, Terezi.  Very character-appropriate.
Rose is feeling ominous about getting this started, huh?  She should.
ROSEBOT: But if I had to describe it, I'd say that misgivings, hunches, doubts and so on are supported on a foundation of un-knowing. ROSEBOT: And along with that absence of knowledge comes a commensurate feeling of dread or worry. Fear about the potential calamity yet to come.
Hmm.  (Trying to parse anything meaningful besides the obvious, and Rose going for a Homestucky start-of-adventure paragraph.)
ROSEBOT: As though in this moment, luck isn't either strictly real or not real, or somewhere inbetween, but absent of meaning completely. ROSEBOT: Luck took one look at our itinerary from here on out and said you'll just have to go on without me. DIRK: Luck rolled over the other side of the dictionary and said not tonight sweetheart, I've got a wicked fuckin' headache. ROSEBOT: Exactly. ROSEBOT: Except now I'm the one with the migraine.
Mhmm.  Because what you’re trying to accomplish isn’t gonna work out the way you think it is, but that fact’s actually quite possibly a good thing for you and everyone else.  Hard to put that in a cut-and-dry good or bad, isn’t it?
> ==>
DIRK: We scanned for Sburban technology, so we know for sure this is the right planet. Wheels are already in motion and all that.
Huh.  I guess if you found the right planet to use, it WOULD already have the tech paradoxically seeded on it, wouldn’t it?
ROSEBOT: It's like the notion I was trying to describe was so conceptually insubstantial, so resistant to concrete definition within any meaningful frame of reference, that even thinking about it as an idea made *me* somehow existentially unsound. ROSEBOT: And not in the way I used to always feel, back before John made the choice to validate our canonical existences axiomatically. ROSEBOT: Foreboding I can deal with. I'm a Seer. Sooths are mine to say. ROSEBOT: But this is different.
Perhaps “Void”, but in the less “misfortune” sense?
Hm.
(Did the heroes bring Roxy on the other ship? I fucking hope I don’t have to go a whole adventure without any more Roxy.  Or fun Void heroes, anyway.  ...Crap.  We’re going to get new characters. That’s right.)
Despite what she thinks, little by little Rose begins to feel her head clear of concern, semantically dubious or otherwise. Her understanding of my ascended existence doesn't include this degree of metanarrative potency, so her doubts as to my words' healing powers are understandable.
Fuck you. Fuck you. FUCK. YOU.
You’re taking this otherwise smart, wonderful character and systematically BEATING OUT OF HER the ability to question her circumstances or doubt her path with a narrative stick.  You’re killing everything that is her, robbing her completely of her will as your title implies.  I don’t like seeing Rose vividly, constantly KILLED at the will level.  I wonder if it’s going to STOP anytime before even the halfway point of this story.
...Heh. “Chaotic-lawful”.  Hehehe. (Or H3h3h3, rather.)
As you know, I have many splinters. So many, I used to find it overwhelming to contemplate them all. Depressing, actually. It was a feeling I could never escape from. The feeling that my sense of self was limitless. That I was forced to exist as a small facet of my own potential, while drowning in an ocean of my greater persona, and all the terrible things I was fully capable of. I was trapped as a limited version of myself who was still burdened by the concern for what it meant to be good, struggling to keep himself from drowning in an overwhelming body of potential which had no concern for human morality whatsoever.
Hmmmmmm.
But that struggle finally ended a few years ago. My head isn't fighting to stay above the water anymore. There isn't even a metaphorical head to speak of. I'm only the water now.
Right, the Ultimate Self.  Essentially encompassing and accessing your whole Heart at once, every disparate definition of yourself pulled together.
(Which makes it even more throw-up disgusting that Rose is currently achieving this same state and STILL being enslaved by Dirk.  He’s not just enslaving Rose, he’s enslaving ALL of Rose, the entire concept she represents.  And deluding her utterly in the process.)
> ==>
DIRK: What's that noise I'm hearing. DIRK: It sounds a little bit like a cat being caught in a ventilation fan. A sort of... DIRK: Inhuman screeching, combined with the grinding of metal. DIRK: Are we even going to make it to the ground? ROSEBOT: Oh, no, ROSEBOT: The ship's fine as far as I can tell. ROSEBOT: That's just Terezi laughing. DIRK: Oh. DIRK: She's... enjoying this, isn't she.
Pfffffff.  :)
> ==>
Tumblr media
Nothing familiar about this planetary body, far as I can tell.

Ah, that “to be continued...” was pretty hard to see.  Guess that’s it for now!
This is definitely going to be fun, if still at least 30% soul-crushing.  It really is really, really hard to see Rose like this, at his mental-manipulating mercy.  Luckily -- if we can even call it luck -- we probably will see very little comparatively of Dirk’s party, and more onscreen of the others in the Hero party or whichever new... humans? (Hybrids even, maybe, if Dirk’s especially ambitious?) ..make up this session’s players.
And I’ll be blogging the whole way through, I suppose.  See you then!

The Art of Playing Mobile Legends
Tumblr media
Youre not playing the game right kung walang arte yung name mo sa mobile legends. You need to spice up your name kasi yung nalang yung controlled variable and all the other aspects of the game is pure RNG.
Tumblr media
Like the match making is garbage. Marami na nagrereklamo na minsan inilalagay ka kasama ng mga taong di mo naman kalevel ang galing which is a problem for most of the people na just playing for fun. Meron din na mga players na mag-AFK nalang or magleleave nalang basta which would ultimately cost you the game. Unfair right? Well hindi lang yan ang unfair. If solo player ka, theres a chance na you would be playing against a duo or trio which is pretty much unfair. Why wouldnt moontoon just seperate solos to the rest of the bunch, right? Well its moontoon.
Tumblr media
You dont have to buy skins for the game. You can survive just being free to play. Hindi naman madamot ng konte si moontoon. Namimigay naman sila ng skin pero like i said, its all RNG. Bragging rights lang yun skin at may bonus lang na konte yung mga may skin.
Tumblr media
About naman sa mga heroes na you should play, dapat simula palang malaman mo na yung play style mo. Its not enough na magaling ka lang sa iisa or dalawang hero. You need to be good at a certain role which in turn means that you need to be good at the heroes na nakapaloob sa role na yun. Grinding matches in Classic is a good way to practice a hero. For new players, i suggest that you use Miya, Layla, Zilong, Saber and Eudora. Those heroes are still viable kapag nasa high ranks ka na. Im currently playing on a smurf account and using Miya as my main at i can win most of my games just pushing ang farming.
Tumblr media
So about sa ranking, you can actually skip Warrior rank if you make a new account. Mostly mapupunta ka agad sa Elte rank once you unlocked Rank Game. I could also say that the most toxic rank is not on the lower rank but yung mga nasa taas. Yeah mahirap na sa low rank for new players kasi either makaharap mo yung mga mayayabang na Smurf or makakampi mo yung mga kagaya mong bago lang din na magpapakamatay kapag di nasunod ang gusto nila. You can speed through Elite to GrandMaster real quick then a steady rate from GM to Epic and a slow crawl from Epic onwards. Why? Kasi andito na yung new wave ng toxicity for Epic and up.
Tumblr media
About sa events... Never ever miss an event. Kapag may nakita kang red dot sa screen mo, click mo agad. Tingnan mo kung anong meron don. Kalimitan may free stuff kang makukuha by clicking those red dots. Mostly trial cards, emblems or fragments makukuha mo but minsan makakakuha ka din ng free skins, emotes at marami pang iba.
Tumblr media
Emblems and Builds. Now we are on the most juicy part of the game. Having the right emblem can really just win you the game. Malaki difference ng max emblem sa mga hindi max emblem. Why? If may kalaban kang hindi max emblem pero same hero as sayo, sino sa tingin mo mananalo? Its that simple. Its a must to upgrade your emblems to max as soon as possible. About naman sa builds, isang google lang or search sa youtube ay makakakuha ka na agad ng build for a certain hero. I suggest na you watch https://www.youtube.com/c/MastertheBasics videos kasi detailed yung mga guides nya for every hero in the game. Alam nyo ba natulungan din nya na manalo ang BlackList sa M3?
Tumblr media
And so to tie it all up... Mobile Legends has become one of the new pambansang laro sa Pilipinas. Since the beginning, maraming players talaga ang in need of a game that they can play with just their mobile devices. Tanda ko pa nung kasagsagan ng DOTA at CrossFire, punong puno lagi ang mga computershop sa palibot ng university namin. Nowadays makikita mo nalang mga ML players sa mga kanto, bahay, classrooms etc etc. I wouldnt say the they did something revolutionary kasi maraming moba games ang nauna sa ML like Arena of Valor, Heroes Evolved and Vainglory just to name the few pero they dipped out of the lime light when ML came. I dont know din. ML just felt like something familiar to me kaya siguro nagustuhan ko din and after all these years nilalaro ko parin sya. Sa mga naglalaro nito, these things are already common knowledge sa inyo but sa mga iba na talagang hindi pa nakakatry, you should try it. Basta walang sisihan nalang kapag itinapon mo ang phone mo sa sobrang inis hahaha.

– European Central Bank (ECB) to Stick to Zero-Interest Rate Policy (ZIRP), QE Program.
– Will the Governing Council Keep the Door Open to Further Extend Its Asset-Purchases?

Trading the News: European Central Bank (ECB) Interest Rate Decision
The European Central Bank (ECB) may generate a limited market reaction as President Mario Draghi and Co. are widely expected to retain the current policy, but the fresh batch of central bank rhetoric may spark near-term headwinds for the Euro should the Governing Council show a greater willingness to further extend its easing-cycle.
What’s Expected:

Why Is This Event Important:Even though the ECB is on course to reduce its its asset-purchases to EUR 60B/month starting in April, the Governing Council may continue to strike a dovish outlook for monetary policy as officials argue ‘headline inflation had increased recently, mainly owing to developments in energy prices.’ In turn, the central bank may increase its efforts to thwart a ‘taper tantrum’ and utilize the non-standard measures beyond December 2017 amid the ongoing weakness in underlying inflation.

The ongoing slack in the real economy accompanied by the slowdown in private-sector consumption may push the ECB to further support the monetary union, and the single currency stands at risk of facing additional headwinds in 2017 as the central bank struggles to achieve its one and only mandate for price stability.

However, the ECB may tame expectations for additional monetary support as key metrics suggest ‘the economic recovery was firming,’ and more of the same from the Governing Council may foster range-bound conditions for the euro-dollar exchange as market attention turns to the Federal Reserve’s March 15 interest rate decision.

How To Trade This Event Risk(Video)
Bearish EUR Trade: Governing Council Keeps Door Open to Further Extend QE Program
Need red, five-minute candle following the rate decision/press conference to consider a short EUR/USD trade.
If market reaction favors a short Euro trade, sell EUR/USD with two separate position.
Set stop at the near-by swing high/reasonable distance from cost; need at least 1:1 risk-to-reward.
Move stop to entry on remaining position once initial target is met, set reasonable limit.
Bullish EUR Trade: ECB Shows Greater Willingness to Move Away From Easing-Cycle
Need green, five-minute candle to favor a long EUR/USD trade.
Implement same strategy as the bearish euro trade, just in the opposite direction.

Failure to test the Fibonacci overlap around 1.0660 (50% expansion) to 1.0680 (78.6% expansion) may keep EUR/USD range-bound over the near-term as the 1.0370 (38.2% expansion) to 1.0420 (61.8% expansion) region continues to offer support, but the diverging paths for monetary policy continues to instill a long-term bearish outlook for the exchange rate as the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) appears to be on course to deliver a March rate-hike; downside targets remain are in focus ahead of the U.S. Non-Farm Payrolls (NFP) report as well amid the recent series of lower highs & lows.
Interim Resistance: 1.0780 (100% expansion) to 1.0800 (23.6% retracement)

January 2017 European Central Bank Interest Rate Decision
EUR/USD 5-Minute
Tumblr media
Chart – Created Using Trading View
After extending the deadline for the quantitative easing (QE) program at the last meeting for 2016, the European Central Bank (ECB) largely endorsed a wait-and-see approach for monetary policy, with President Mario Draghi and Co. keeping the door open to further adjust its non-standard measures as the central bank plans to reduce its asset-purchases to €60B/month starting in April. The ECB continued to strike a dovish outlook, with the central bank warning ‘headline inflation has increased lately, largely owing to base effects in energy prices, but underlying inflation pressures remain subdued.’ The Euro struggled to hold its ground following the ECB rate decision, but the market reaction was short-lived, with EUR/USD ending the day at 1.0663.

English Artist Benedict Radcliffe Wired with Passion
In the opening scene of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit,” Roger stars opposite a sweet, monosyllabic Baby Herman in the animated short, “Something’s Cooking.” Roger flubs his part, the scene is cut, and Herman becomes a garrulous curmudgeon, screaming blue murder at the rabbit before storming off the cartoon set and into the grimy studio lot, possibly in search of a Montecristo No. 2. That moment when Herman and his chubby, watercolor backside waddle into the real world was an absolute mind-bender for children like me at the time.
Today, looking at photographs of English artist Benedict Radcliffe’s automotive wireframe sculptures, the same fuse has blown. An ethereal, gleaming white Toyota Corolla being lifted and carried into a truck by six men, one of whom seems to be at once inside and outside the car. A black London taxi driving past a fluorescent orange outline of the same that seems superimposed but somehow casts a shadow. A hot-pink Range Rover Evoque that looks more hologram than solid matter, and a dayglo Lamborghini Countach that pierces the humdrum of an everyday street scene as an oblivious pigeon pads by. It’s abstract meets everyday, and it’s absolutely stunning.
Specializing in a kind of augmented reality, Benedict Radcliffe builds wireframe car sculptures that capture the essence of the originals.
Amazingly, all this visual chicanery springs from plain old steel rod and a bit of paint. To find out how, I visit Radcliffe’s London studio—an unremarkable, graffitied industrial unit on a quiet East End street, inside which the alchemy takes place. When Radcliffe first took over the space, he filled it with a bright pink skate park commissioned for a shoe launch. Now he lives in the loft, and the main space below is dominated by a huge “datum table” where his wireframe sculptures take shape. Hanging on one side, there’s a comically outsized bicycle frame, and the opposite wall is plastered with full-scale blueprints of a Ferrari F40. By the door sits a white wireframe Honda Gold Wing he displayed at the city’s prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum in 2012.
Chatting in the studio’s kitchen, Radcliffe explains where it all began. While studying at Glasgow’s Mackintosh School of Architecture, he was trained in fabrication and welding by Andy Scott, creator of many landmark installations including “The Kelpies,” a pair of 100-foot horse’s heads sculpted in metal that tower over one of Scotland’s main highways. A year after graduating in 2004, Radcliffe created “Modern Japanese Classic”—a white wireframe Subaru Impreza P1—as part of a personal exhibition. Too large to fit inside the venue, it was “parked” on the street outside, dazzling among the dank, weathered masonry of Glasgow’s city center. With that, his signature style was born.
Most pieces have been 1:1 scale, but he’s also produced smaller works of late, building a 1:6 Toyota Celica Mk7 on skateboard wheels for Mai Ikuzawa, daughter of Le Mans and Formula 2 racer and team owner Tetsu Ikuzawa. Yet he’s not afraid to go large, either: A life-sized JCB JS200 tracked excavator wireframe now sits at the plant manufacturer’s headquarters in England, and a 20-foot-long, six-wheeled Komatsu mining truck is now taking shape at a bigger facility elsewhere.
“It’s quite straightforward—cutting, welding, and grinding—but it’s the manipulation of the steel rod I’m drawing with that is really important.”
But the process remains fairly consistent, regardless of size. Radcliffe collates technical drawings and photographs from the internet, then traces out front, side, and rear elevations by hand to the required scale. It’s far from a simple case of copying what he sees, though. Even at this early stage, deft artistic wit is called for as he distills the vehicle’s form into key features that “capture the shape of the car with an economy of line,” as he neatly puts it. He uses just one gauge of steel rod for each sculpture—0.12 inch on small pieces and usually 0.39 inch on 1:1s—which means he recreates a highly complex, multisurfaced solid form using only what to all intents and purposes is a single, bendable cylinder of metal.
Radcliffe eschews computer-aided design and 3D-printed prototypes in favor of a manual process, literally building on his sketches.
“Everything I do is quite low-tech,” he says. “I’ll start with the blueprints, then extrude up from the plan. I might concentrate on the front bumper first, then the back bumper and the light clusters, building in components. It’s quite straightforward metalwork—cutting, welding, and grinding—but it’s the manipulation of the steel rod I’m drawing with that is really important.”
A homemade (and quite secret) apparatus helps Radcliffe bend the wire, and although a temporary grid is built to help keep the proportions correct, there’s improvisation to the building process, too: little changes here and there, cutting out and replacing lengths of rod, and experimenting with forms until he’s happy with the result. Pointing out the two mismatched loops that form each door mirror on Izukawa’s Celica, he elaborates: “These mirrors are quite abstract, but if I’d just had one loop, they would have looked two-dimensional. A second loop gives more form and depth.”
The Komatsu excavator sculpture weighs just a fraction of the real thing but still tips the scales at 3,300 pounds.
Radcliffe gets some help when it comes to the megasculptures—for example, fabrication of the 100 identical loops that make up the JCB’s tracks were outsourced after he created the master—but otherwise he does all the work himself, including the welding (TIG on the small sculptures, MIG on the rest). It’s often frustrating work—when heat from the welding gun distorts the metal, for instance—but once things start to take shape, it becomes a joy.
“The trick is to make them look simple, but they’re actually quite tricky. Not everyone has the patience,” he acknowledges, “but it’s actually really good fun. After about two months, once I’ve done all the hard work, I can experiment with how to do stuff. Someone might come from an engineer’s point of view and do it differently, but I can go a bit free-form and be more playful.”
The pink Celica and a white BMW E30 M3 Evolution (also 1:6 scale) took almost as long to build as the 10 to 16 weeks required to make a full-scale car, partly due to their intricacy. “You’ve got more steel to mess around with on the big ones, so you can make more mistakes,” Radcliffe says. “The small ones are really fiddly, and it’s difficult to get the welder in.”
The magic is all in the bending of the steel rod.
And the smaller the sculpture, the more the thickness of the paint has an effect on the visual gravity of the finished article. Radcliffe usually spray-paints, but the Celica and M3 were powder coated due to their diminutive size, which bulked them up and produced a tougher look versus the naked wireframe.
So, to retain more detail, Radcliffe kept the 0.12-inch rod but moved up to 1:5 scale for his subsequent project, a Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione. Unpainted, without wheels, and up on temporary stilts, it is not yet finished but is utterly mesmerizing in its accuracy, from hood bulges and box wheel arches to the tiny Lancia shield on the nose and the distinctive rear-wing mounts. A rare concession to technology is the MDF jig Radcliffe had made by a CNC router to help form the Lancia’s intricate, 18-spoke wheels, but he can be forgiven for that; they’re shrunk from 15 inches across to just 3.
The intricacy of Radcliffe’s work is even more apparent in his 1:6-scale sculptures, which have to capture the key details with even less steel.
Examining the Delta, my instinct is to click and drag a mouse to rotate the digital-looking form in front of me. The fact you can actually move around it, or even pick it up and hold it in your hand, is a genuine wonder.
In contrast, the towering JCB and Komatsu are edificial—at 3,300 pounds, the latter weighs 10 times as much as a full-scale car wireframe—and required more of an engineering-focused approach to accommodate their trusses and overhangs. He says these creations, which are built piece by piece in component form, are more about structural integrity than playfulness and line—yet he still likens them to big Lego bricks.
You’ve probably gathered that Radcliffe’s clients are eclectic to say the least, with corporate patrons such as Toyota, Jaguar Land Rover, and Nike, the latter for whom he built a giant wireframe Air Max shoe. Other projects include a Citroën DS-style hovercar from the “Judge Dredd” comics that was commissioned by a toy shop in London, and in 2014 Heathrow Airport bought one of his orange London taxis to make a vivid centerpiece for the departure lounge in Terminal 2. As is the art world’s way, pricing is fluid, but Heathrow paid around $130,000. That early Subaru P1 went to a collector for $30,000, while the Countach that Radcliffe sold privately in 2008 went under RM Sotheby’s hammer six years later for $116,500.
Never one to shy away from a challenge, Radcliffe is working on a 1:5-scale sculpture of the dauntingly complex Lancia Delta Integrale Evoluzione.
But you get the distinct feeling fiscal concerns are more a means than an end—a way for Radcliffe to keep doing the work he loves. He’s chomping at the bit to finish the little Integrale (it’s going to be painted brilliant white), while the 1:1 Ferrari F40 is next and will grace the Classic Car Club Manhattan’s cavernous riverside clubhouse in Hell’s Kitchen. I ask what else he’d choose to build, which prompts a flurry of glossy car book pages and various printouts. He admired the “democratic” attainability of the Impreza, and the people’s champion theme continues with the Peugeot 205 GTI, but Porsche features, too, as a Kremer Racing 935 and modified 911 from Japanese outfit RWB are also on the wish list. And then there’s the Ferrari 288 GTO: “Oh my God, those wheel arches! Absolutely filthy!”

And with those words, Radcliffe explains why his work gets gearheads frothing at the brain: He is one, too.
