List of Zoreclyan Nagaii
The mythology of Zoreclya and Hizore includes their own equivalent of Japan’s yokai and American fearsome critters. These legendary creatures are known as the “Nagaii”, which is a portmanteau of the Zoreclyan words “nag” (meaning strange) and “agaii” (meaning being). Nagaii are found worldwide, both in old mythology and modern urban legends.
Zedella: Zoreclya’s trickster goddess, resembling a giant armored spider with extendable limbs. She was born when her father, the god Kiton, while in meditation, accidentally spawned her from his rambunctiousness. She often takes Dragid form when playing pranks on mortals. She also serves as a guide to the underdogs of Zoreclyan society.
Aroi: The Zoreclyan equivalent of fairies and little people. They are tiny Dragids the size of one’s thumb, who sometimes steal from normal sized Dragids either out of mischief or a need for survival.
Miloto: The Zoreclyan boogeyman. Naughty Dragid children are threatened into good behavior with the prospect of being spirited away by this being.
Ambin: The spirit of dreams, also known as the King of Dreams. He collects dreams after the Dragids who had them wake up in the morning, bringing them to his alternate dimension of Vivin, the kingdom of dreams, which can be accessed by the sleeping or comatose via Dreamspheres, where dreams are born. Ambin also sees to it that no nightmares find a place in his kingdom.
Gumu: The creation of Ambin, whom she lovingly refers to as her “Fou-fou” or “Papa”. A monstrous creature resembling a a hideous distortion of a female Dragid baby with an extremely wide, void like mouth and backwards legs, giving her a vaguely grasshopper-like profile. Her voice, sounding eerily like an ordinary child, contrasts her grotesque size and appearance. However, she is a guardian beast of Dragid children, who call on her when in need. Her gaping mouth helps her to devour nightmares, as well as the souls of those who would hurt children in any way. The Gumi trumpet was designed with her as an inspiration.
Midon: A spirit who brings lost or abandoned inanimate objects or unchecked garbage to life. He resembles a Dragid with white skin and hair, orange eyes and a single horn growing out of his forehead, like an Earth unicorn. Once a year on the eve of Freedomfest, he is said to lead one thousand of these “Dohoks” in a procession through the mortal world.
Dohoks: Zoreclya’s equivalent of Japan’s tsukumogami. They are lost or neglected items which Midon brings to life as Nagaii.
Pokina: A legendary ostrich-like bird with white sclerae and a colorful plumage, this Nagaii is found exclusively in the jungles of Hizore. It is used in the Zoreclyan equivalent of a snipe hunt, in which unwitting victims are duped into hunting the creature. The Pokina is also said to have the ability to assume Dragid form, though its colors and sclerae remain unchanged, allowing one to recognize it by its eyes.
Kabbei: Mermaid-like amphibious beings, with bioluminescent feelers instead of horns or antlers. They are popular in Zoreclyan fairy tales and media. Playing music around a Kabbei habitat can attract them.
Otilu: Creatures blamed for the disappearance of those who went out into the forest for any reason. They stalk Dragid prey unseen by hiding behind objects or in dark areas on order to attack without warning. The Otilu also have the ability to mimic voices and animal vocalizations in order to lure their prey to them.
Hovin: Trees with faces. They impart their wisdom to those who encounter them. If a Hovin tree dies, they resurrect phoenix-style as a tree sprout, as part of their cycle of death and rebirth.
Tengra: Gigantic beasts who lumber through the forests.
Alumerro: Tengu-like beings with bulbous, glowing eyes and hummingbird-like wings. Many tales popularize them having some relationship with the Pokina. The Alu flyer, a sort of winged harness which allows one to fly, gets its name from this Nagaii, which inspired the invention.
Dolladolla: It always appears at night, as a shadowy figure in the distance waving its arms. It seemingly never leaves its position. Any who try to get a closer look at it either dies or is traumatized by the shock of its true appearance.
Suraila: The spirit of a Dragid girl who died in a violent freak accident caused by a bully, who became her first victim after her demise. She haunts schools, carrying her broken horn which she uses to attack bullies.
Kubri: Spirits of those who have not been given proper funerary arrangements. They take the form of corpses wrapped in burial bandages, mummy-style. According to traditional beliefs, if the bandages are not cut from the body, the soul is bound to haunt the living realm until the wrappings are released; a Kubri is essentially a zombie trapped by its own bandages.
Gigalog: This creature takes the form of a huge, gaunt humanoid creature with sharp, fang-like teeth. It moves by crawling in tight spaces.
Aldoth: A massive worm with large eyes. It burrows through sand and soil, but it can’t move through rock. Dragid carpenters thus traditionally reinforce basements with stone.
Lumon: Zoreclyan elemental spirits.
Trolkit: Creatures similar to goblins or trolls that make mischief and cause trouble for Dragids who come into their territory. They prefer cacophonies over music, which repels them.
Trilai: Spirits that live in clouds. They watch the world below, ducking out of sight when any Dragid looks up. Occasionally, they come down to explore the planet.
Shegu: A shadow that, under whatever magical circumstances, has come to chilling vampiric life. They drag their victims into dark areas before drinking their blood. Few times has the victim been said to escape to tell the tale.
Galzod: A goblin-like creature that eats Laposite. Dragids with Jaopees know to beware of this critter, who will either hunt alone, or in packs.
Laplete: A subterranean giant with long, sinuous arms that it uses to reach above ground, seeking prey.
