The Late George Apley (Joseph L. Mankiewicz, 1947)

Como Dragonwyck (El castillo de Dragonwyck, 1946) y The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (El fantasma y la señora Muir, 1947) es una película del Este. Bostoniana, para ser exactos, y con esa mezcla de ironía y respeto hacia la muy ajena mentalidad tradicionalista de la «aristocracia» de Nueva Inglaterra que caracterizaba la adaptación vidoriana de otra novela del mismo autor, John P. Marquand, H.M. Pulham, Esq. (Cenizas de amor, 1941). Sólo que, atenta a las relaciones de un padre que envejece (Ronald Colman, muy británico y melancólico) con sus hijos, recuerda también Life With Father (1947) de Curtiz, Meet Me in St. Louis (1944) de Minnelli y The Magnificent Ambersons (El cuarto mandamiento, 1942) de Welles, de las que no desmerece, pese a su falta de prestigio, en lo más mínimo. Me atrevería a insinuar, incluso, que es la más profunda y compleja, la que más se acerca, por la complejidad de su narración indirecta, a los procedimientos novelísticos de Henry James, aunque con medios más sencillos, los del cine: no ha tratado de conseguir esa sensación de lejanía y de observación sucesiva de un personaje por otro (que, a su vez, es contemplado por un tercero) mediante la estructura del relato, sino con la única ayuda de ese ojo móvil que amplifica y fija a diferentes distancias (capaz de incluir o excluir de su campo de visión a unos u otros actores, que miran o son vistos sin darse cuenta o respondiendo a esa mirada) que es la cámara, montada con frecuencia sobre una grúa. Y ese incesante desplazamiento de la mirada en el espacio introduce un segundo factor, capital, del arte de Mankiewicz: el tiempo considerado como camino, como una dirección que puede recorrerse en ambos sentidos, y tanto desde fuera de los personajes como desde su interior. Es posible que The Late George Apley (El mundo de George Apley, 1947) sea una película que, en principio, no interesase a Mankiewicz demasiado; no creo, sin embargo, que la hiciese con desgana ni que, una vez acabada, no representase nada para él. Creo que ilumina con más claridad que ninguna otra algunas facetas de Mankiewicz que habitualmente permanecen en la sombra, ocultas bajo su reputación de cineasta frío, intelectual y cínico, tres rasgos que —sin esfuerzo alguno— su retrato de George Apley desmiente.

“The disapproval expressed in the apprehension that analysis might render a person more introspective seems to arise from a philosophy of life—well represented in The Late George Apley —which grants no place to the individual or his individual feelings and strivings. What counts is that he fit into the environment, be of service to the community, and fulfill his duties. Hence whatever individual fears or desires he has should be controlled. Self-discipline is the uppermost virtue. To give much thought to himself in any way is self-indulgence and "selfishness." The best representatives of psychoanalysis, on the other hand, would emphasize not only the responsibility toward others but that toward oneself as well. Therefore they would not neglect to stress the inalienable right of the individual to the pursuit of happiness, including his right to take seriously his development toward inner freedom and autonomy.”
