November — with uncanny witchery in its changed trees. With murky red sunsets flaming in smoky crimson behind the westering hills. With dear days when the austere woods were beautiful and gracious in a dignified serenity of folded hands and closed eyes—days full of a fine, pale sunshine that sifted through the late, leafless gold of the juniper-trees and glimmered among the grey beeches, lighting up evergreen banks of moss and washing the colonnades of the pines. Days with a high-sprung sky of flawless turquoise. Days when an exquisite melancholy seemed to hang over the landscape and dream about the lake. But days, too, of the wild blackness of great autumn storms, followed by dank, wet, streaming nights when there was witch-laughter in the pines and fitful moans among the mainland trees.

What is a traditional way to break a curse in the Irish pagan tradition?
I hope whatever curse you are suffering isn't too bad because this is awful late so sorry.
While cures for curses by that name don't appear too much in folklore, the evil eye function similarly to a curse put upon someone and so these should work.
Most prominently is to write the name of the person who cursed you onto a piece of paper and burn it. Then inhale a little bit of that. If you don't know who cursed you, write the whole alphabet. (link)
This should work to dispel any bad intention done against you
EDIT: In researching this a user on here (@juniper-divination-and-witchery)compiled great post on the evil eye, the methods mentioned under cures should work, link

What cared they? Old Tom had built his roof well, and his chimney drew.
"Warm fire—books—comfort—safety from storm—our cats on the rug. Moonlight," said Barney, "would you be any happier now if you had a million dollars?"
"No—nor half so happy. I'd be bored by conventions and obligations then."

Safely back from this weekend's LARP event in Pennsylvania! I got to have my combat therapy and time with good friends and the eternal joy of having the Appalachians under my feet once again. My dear old mountains, how I've missed you. 💜
Apart from the usual fun of making potions, fighting monsters, and being exceptionally clever (my character made some Very Good Decisions this game), I got to do some foraging on the hillside before the event started, with my good buddy and witch-sis @wind-voice. We found and identified several species of local flora and gathered small bundles of speedwell, ground ivy, violets, juniper, and periwinkle for our witchery.
I'm really enjoying this new stage in my journey, connecting to the land that I now live on and to the land in other places I've called home. Identifying the trees and flowers and incidental weeds around me is a fun exercise that lets me feel a little bit witchy even when I'm just taking a stroll around the neighborhood. It's also allowing me to add new accoutrements to my components stores and rebuild my herb cabinet, much of which had to be discarded during our recent move.
Also, we all know that if you give a witch a bundle of herbs, they're going to need a jar to put it in, so I'm looking forward to making a little trip to the craft store! 😁

The kind of writing I truly love and dream of emulating is the kind that just can't be truncated. Can't be abridged. It might be long, but every bit of it is necessary. Not because it's giving essential information and facts - but because each line evokes feelings that are so specific, so tangible, that even though the theme is the same throughout, you can't possibly delete any of those lines for the sake of brevity without losing something important.
I was just trying to pick my favorite part of the following LM Montgomery quote, thinking it would be easy - a long paragraph, there must be one or two lines that stand out. Here it is:
"November - with uncanny witchery in its changed trees. With murky red sunsets flaming in smoky crimson behind the westering hills. With dear days when the austere woods were beautiful and gracious in a dignified serenity of folded hands and closed eyes - days full of fine, pale sunshine that sifted through the late, leafless gold of the juniper-trees and glimmered among the grey beeches, lighting up evergreen banks of moss and washing the colonnades of the pines. Days with a high-sprung sky of flawless turquoise. Days when an exquisite melancholy seemed to hang over the landscape and dream about the lake. But days, too, of the wild blackness of great autumn storms, followed by dank, wet, streaming nights when there was witch-laughter in the pines and fitful moans among the mainland trees."
You tell me where I should make the cut. I say it's impossible. Take out even one line and you won't have Montgomery's autumn anymore. The whole scene setting is so perfect. I could read this all day and never wish for an action scene.

A guide to plant spirit ritual and witchcraft, with practical instruction on the use of botanicals especially associated with the beloved goddess Hekate and her daughters Circe and Medea. Bringing pharmakeia (the practice of plant spirit witchcraft) into contemporary times, Entering Hekate’s Garden merges historical knowledge with modern techniques. In it, author Cyndi Brannen offers her extensive insight into Hekatean ritual and witchcraft and especially its application to the Green World. The book features detailed monographs dedicated to 39 plants ranging from the esoteric such as aconite, American mandrake, and damiana to the accessible including bay laurel, dandelion, fennel, garlic, juniper, and lavender. This book blends traditional methods with the author's personal approach, emphasizing her understanding of plant spirits as allies in the witch’s journey. It includes a new taxonomy for interpreting plant energies, methods for creating new correspondences, the importance of layering, using botanicals in spells, rituals, altars, and more, as well as ways to develop meaningful relationships with the pharmakoi (master plant spirits). Poetry, petitions, and musings about pharmakeia are woven throughout. Entering Hekate’s Garden takes readers deep into the mystical world of botanical witchery in a way no other book has before.

Cedar is used for healing, purification, money, confidence, and protection. Cedar is a genus of coniferous trees in the plant family Pinaceae found all over the world, including C. libani, or Lebanese cedar. The western red cedar, T. plicata, actually belongs to a different genus in the Cupressaceae family. The varieties of cedar are, for the most part, in stable populations and currently not of concern to conservationists and environmental groups. Cedar leaf bundles for smoke cleansing are a popular substitute for white sage, and it’s said that cedar kept in the wallet or purse draws in prosperity. Hanging cedar in the hearth is said to protect against lightning. A common substitute is juniper. Further associations: The sun and the element of fire...
Juniper is used as a powerful banishing herb as well as for protection, love, and health. It is said that juniper hung on the door protects against evil forces and theft, and juniper berries, when carried by men, can increase potency.
Further associations: The sun and the element of fire.
Birch is used in protection and purification. Birch near the home is known to ward off and protect against the evil eye, as well as lightning. The bark can be used in protective spells.
Further associations: Venus and the element of water...
Garlic is used for protection, healing, exorcism, and anti-theft. While garlic is often associated with the goddess Hekate, and sometimes, because of this, the moon, another association is Archangel Michael. Garlic is said to contain the essence of Archangel Michael, and because of this, folk practitioners in Italy and Italian immigrants in America hung garlands of garlic in their home for protection. Garlic can be used in protective charms and satchels and is a common staple in kitchen witchery. You can add garlic cloves to your bath to banish negativity or carry a clove with you to achieve the same goal. Further associations: The planet Mars and the element of fire.
Chili peppers are used for fidelity, hexing, love, and hex breaking. The various types of chili pepper have different properties. For example, cayenne (C. annuum) is used in repelling negativity and speeding up any spell it is added to. Bird’s eye chilis from the Solanaceae (nightshade) family can be used for cursing and crafting powders. Chili peppers and powders are generally used in both sowing discord and bane in the lives of targets, but also to break hexes by scattering the powder around the house. Chili powder has also been used in love charms and spells to increase attraction. Further associations: The planet Mars and the element of fire...

Continuing my exploration of evergreen magic, I’m thinking about heading out into the forest to collect more to make an evergreen oil - I’m thinking about using a combination of white pine and red spruce needles (because I know a good source for both) plus juniper berries since I have so many.   Probs gonna use the end result in candle making and to try my hands at a salve.

🔥 You were particularly energetic as a kid, or even now. You're spunky
🔥 You're very brave, especially with standing up to people
🔥 You prefer cooler temperatures because it doesn’t bother you as much
🔥 You constantly feel hungry, or have an active digestive system and a fast metabolism. You may get acidity or heartburn a lot
🔥 You prefer hot drinks and food over cold ones
🔥 You feel thirst more often than most
🔥 You are energetic, passionate, dramatic and prone to irritability or being emotionally volatile
🔥 You are very eloquent and expressive, and often may talk too much or too quickly
🔥 You’ve been praised for your leadership ability
🔥 You are very very curious, and may be easily distracted

Tumblr media
Ways to bond with Fire
🔥 Teach yourself not to fear it, or at least not too much. If you’re anything like me, fire kinda scares you, despite your connection to it. Light a candle and meditate, and teach yourself that fire is a part of you, so you shouldn’t fear it without reason.
🔥 If you’re an artist, try using charcoal pencils more often
🔥 Meditate with candles
🔥 Drink warm soup or tea (don’t burn your mouth though)
🔥 Release your passion and/or anger. I recommend getting a punching bag for when you’re feeling particularly riled up
🔥 Working out, or any other activities that make you sweat
🔥 Burn Bay Leaves with wishes on them to make them come true
🔥 Get a Himalayan Salt Lamp. Don’t use it if you have pets though, as it might harm them
🔥 Use a Heating Pad when you’re in pain
🔥 Take time to notice your body heat more often. Appreciate how warm your skin and breath feels
🔥 Pursue your passions, whatever those might be. If it makes you passionate, go for it. Fire is the element of not holding back
🔥 Channel your passion and especially your anger into productivity rather than pain
🔥 Drink tea with warm spices
🔥 Eat spicy food if you can handle it
🔥 Be brave in all things
🔥 Use more Dragon imagery in your life

Book #2 of 2022
Tumblr media
"The Once and Future Witches" by Alix E. Harrow
Spoiler-free Summary:
This historical fantasy takes place in 1893 New Salem, brim with political tension and rising women's suffragette movement. The story follows three sisters, James Juniper, Agnes Amaranth, and Beatrice Belladonna, as they reunite and rekindle the sisterly connection that was severed by their abusive father. In the midst of political tension, the sisters aim to reignite the flame of witchery and lead a revolution against the heavy hand of the patriarchy. They must call back the Lost Ways and utilize them against a growing (and cleverly disguised) evil, if they ever hope to establish themselves as powerful women in an unforgiving man's world. This historical fantasy takes place in 1893 New Salem, brim with political tension and rising women's suffragette movement. Full thoughts below the cut:
- Wow. Wowowowow, this is probably the BEST BOOK I have read in a long time! Alix Harrow has a unique way of writing and describing scenery that is absolutely mesmerizing; I felt like I couldn't put this book down for the life of me.
- The sisters themselves are super relatable. Having grown up with two sisters, I could see many parallels in how ACTUAL sister relationships are; none of this bullshit about "~my sister is always my ride or die and we NEVER fight~". No. These relationships are REAL and they have tensions and difficulties that they work out in this book. There is a lot of talk of trauma, abuse, neglect, abandonment... Because all 3 grew up in a shitty household and forced to survive. Each sister has their own trauma to work through, and they do it so distinctly in this book.
- LGBTQ REPRESENTATION!!! I eat that shit up. One of the main characters, Bea, has an interest in women (which is very distinctly taboo in this time period), and eventually develops a crush on one of the black women investigative journalists. Very tender moments between these two make you absolutely PINE for their stolen moments of affection.
- Similarly, there is a trans character!! As a trans person myself, it was awesome to see some representation. I won't mention who it is, because it isn't revealed until the end of the book, so I will let you guess who it is ;)
- The only thing that didn't sit super well with me was an emphasis on motherhood. It makes me dysphoric, so I don't really love to read about it. BUT I will say, it serves a VERY important part in the story - Also?? There are a lot of references to older "wives tales" or fairytale stories, which I was not expecting. It was a pleasant surprise in the context of the book (women passing down their magic words in unforeseen places, like in fairytales and bedtime stories), and Harrow did an absolutely fabulous job incorporating these into the story without letting it get too overbearing
- Overall, like I said, this book is the best I have read in a LONG time. It's story is captivating, and it was one of those books that I was sad once I finished, because of how invested I was in the story. Do yourself a favor and PLEASE read this book if you like themes of witchcraft, feminism, equity, and similar aspects.
BEST /|\(^-A-^)/|\ ~ROACHY
