James Paul McCartney 73 special
I’ve been wanting to watch this for awhile! Finally the time has come to watch this baby!!
Okay opening with little tidbits, fun cute. Is it just me or does Linda’s section read very John esque…
Oh Paul’s is quippy too… did you write these questions so you could give funny answers Paul?? Wait wants this about love of your life:
Tumblr media
Linda the kids?? Did you leave someone off Paul? 🤨 hmmm sus
Tumblr media
Of course the famous vest looking over shirt with necklace combo!! This look was a whole Harry styles era!! Paul looking at linda all shy and blushy but also doing his little poses for her! He’s so femme here… gosh what was going through his head during this period he was just so free and girlish with Linda… Francie said he was so afraid he wasn’t manly enough (we knew) in 68 but he truly seemed to swing hard the other way in the 70s.
I can’t believe linda is just taking pics the whole time and he’s also making her SING with him?? The way he looks at her like “sing with me sing with me”… heart of the country is a cute song
Linda crouching in this way with her dress over her knees … reminds me of the story of her seducing someone famous like this (I can’t remember who)…
Tumblr media
Mary little lamb 🙃
It’s crazy it’s only 3 years after the Beatles and Paul looks SO different. Maybe that’s the intent behind the radical change. Or maybe he’s just being trendy idk (boring). But also 3 years in Beatle time was also radical. I mean 64-67, that’s a crazy difference.
I mean honestly this is not that different from give my regards to broad street really just has no narrative squeezed in between the music set pieces… he really should have just left broadstreet a tv movie then he wouldn’t have gotten so much hate for it lol
I’m honestly like … yeah I get it John it’s boring listening to all these slow hippy songs one after another
Oh spoke too soon do we have a narrative?
ENTER : LIVERPOOL
Lived there most of me life (have you technically Paul?) … he really busted out the scouse for that one
I feel like Paul’s tryna capture the thing he’s always talking about with his family but he honestly just looks nervous and tense this whole time… he doesn’t seem to relax until he’s a bit drunk and even then he glances at the camera …
OOP, “people call me a stick in the mud” right after that
OH PINK SUIT PAUL HERE WE GO
Paul truly loves a big dance number doesn’t he… even tho he clearly can’t dance really… once again something he’s too nervous to do naturally. Him dancing in this big boots he’s taking little steps cause he’s nervous about tripping ! They chose to speed up all his dance routines probably cause it looks so slow so he could keep up with them. Insert of someone else tapping in those shoes.
I like Paul saying America has better movie popcorn… it’s because it’s not sweet probably!!’ Who wants sweet popcorn at the theater it’s gotta be buttery and salty.
A Beatles medley you say????
I bet Paul was like I’m definitely NOT gonna sing a Beatles song 🖕🏼 So they were like er let’s just get some normies in here
moving on a concert now-
Paul’s bum is just not looking as plump as it used to 😔
Omg right before they started playing maybe im amazed he talked to the guitar player and at first I thought he kissed him but I watched it again and it looks like he kinda aggressively grabs him then pushed him away… hm!!!
Honestly sometimes I don’t mind the mullet but sometimes I really HATE it… and I’m really hating it during maybe I’m amazed
Omg I was like wow I can’t believe he’s STILL playing long tall Sally it’s really his jam but then girls jumped up to dance like mad!!! Are these some original Beatles girls or what?? Scruffs? Are you out there?? (I think the scruffs had just disbanded by this point but I know some of them still followed Paul around, even tho Linda would do everything to get rid of them). now everyone’s dancing! Hes still got it boy
The famous strawberry jacket!! (Strawberry fields forever?)
Oop that’s the end I guess… well good night Paul!

This an edited version of my original post. Redacted portions are available under the cut!
Around 26:30, Paul reminisces about the songs he and John wrote before forming The Beatles. He starts singing “Just Fun,” a song they wrote with the following lyrics:
They say that our love is just fun
The day that our friendship begun
Well, there’s no blue moon that I can see
There’s never been in history
Because our love was just fun
This interests me because it’s another one of Paul’s “friend” songs where he juxtaposes the ideas of romance and friendship. But the thing that jumps out to me is the reference to “Blue Moon,” a song which Paul has said that he and John learned together in Mimi’s vestibule.
Tumblr media
Edits
Deleted:
(I believe doing so is how Paul manages to maintain the ambiguity around the subject of his love songs), after “[…] friendship.”
Given the context that James McCartney didn’t trust John and that Mimi referred to Paul as John’s “special friend,” I like to imagine that the first line in “Just Fun” is recognizing society’s skepticism and discomfort around gay relationships (example: the evergreen gaslight that goes, “You don’t like [people of your same gender], you’re just going through a phase!”). after the image.
“wherein” in paragraph 1.
Added:
“where” in paragraph 1.

Why Paul McCartney Still Tours: Part 2
A Little Essay
In Part 1 (here) we looked at a reader comment to a Daily Mail article (see article here) about McCartney’s touring. She spoke of her grandfather observing McCartney and his young family when they used to visit the Hamptons in New York in the 70s and early 80s.
“Granddad's take is… the stage is the only remaining place that he is truly happy and comfortable and it allows him to always think of the times Linda was on the stage with him... he feels he has tried but has been unable to find the true happiness he had with Linda...”
I’m sure he tours because he enjoys it, but this could be one of the reasons for that enjoyment. According to granddad, touring is the closest he can get to his happiness with Linda. Even if you don’t put much stock into online anecdotes, the opinion expressed (regardless if it’s really “granddad’s”) is held by someone.
“he feels he has tried but has been unable to find the true happiness he had with Linda...” I’ve got the same feeling. I could be wrong, but the feeling is there. He is happy at present, but it’s not the same happy, not as intense, if that’s the right word.
Watch the video of “Silly Love Songs” and see McCartney, the young husband and father, radiate pure joy.
Go to youtube and check out that 1976 “Silly Love Songs” music video (here). In its backstage and concert footage, you see a McCartney who is in his element, radiating absolute joy. He practically skips down hallways; he can’t contain his enthusiasm as he’s having fun with his band and his family.
If you want to see photos of Paul being silly and spontaneous and physically playful with his wife, you’re going to find them in the Paul-and-Linda era. You’ll see Paul hoisting Linda on his shoulders or imitating a vampire that’s about to bite her neck or the two of them dancing together like teenagers. I haven’t seen his smile captured as broadly or as filled with laughter since; his eyes don’t sparkle the same way IMO.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And how could it be the same or comparable? It’s the natural outgrowth of aging. The most meaningful milestones of one’s life happened in the past: first love, birth of children (and in Paul’s case, Beatlemania).
Let’s remember that this man who has had an epochal influence on music said in 1975, “My family is my life, then my music.” Then this legendary artist later said, “My proudest achievement is my children.” Children he had with Linda. It sounds to me that his time with Linda, raising their young family and creating music together, was one of singular happiness.

Left: People magazine cover April 25, 1975, Paul and Linda McCartney
Right: James Paul McCartney TV special, 1973. A mini bio during the introductory song. After showing Paul’s birth date, birth place, etc., there was this gem: the loves of his life. 😎
____________________________________________
It’s a sentiment shared by the reporter who interviewed McCartney for an April 16, 2011, article in The Times titled Paul McCartney: ‘Now I can think of Linda with joy.’ (You can read the entire article here.)
If one has any doubts that Linda looms large in his memory and as a presence in his life, then this 2011 article from The Times will dispel them.
In the article, McCartney is interviewed on the publication of Linda McCartney: Life in Photographs (Taschen, 2011) in which he comments on a selection of 10 photos of his choosing. Notably, he selected mostly images of he and Linda raising their young children… “McCartney reminisces unstoppably about those days, perhaps the happiest of his life.”
“McCartney reminisces unstoppably about those days, perhaps the happiest of his life. ‘Obviously she is there in all of these photographs, and in my memories… I could talk about those days for ever,’ he says.”
Interspersed with his recollections is McCartney’s revelation that he and Linda’s grandchildren grew up constantly hearing about “Grandma Linda” (as did his own little Beatrice). He describes it as “very touching and very sweet“ that Mary and Stella keep Linda’s memory alive with their kids. “Obviously she is there in all of these photographs, and in my memories.”
“So how does he feel, looking again at these private moments, captured by his soul mate of those years, now long gone? McCartney’s response: ‘… you can just look at it with pleasure. Because they were great times. It is tinged with sadness because you lost that person, but the main feeling for me looking at these is joy.’”
Gazing at one of Linda’s photos of his younger self with daughters Heather and baby Mary, “Paul McCartney is smiling, transported: ‘I could talk about those days for ever,’ he says.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
What follows is a most touching quote. Nancy understands that Linda can’t be erased. As the mother of Paul’s children Linda remains significant in his life.
“‘She is a very powerful memory because I was married to her for nearly 30 years. Now, in my relationship with my new girlfriend, Linda is a powerful presence, and I am lucky that Nancy [Shevell] recognises that and is a big admirer of her work… It is a dreadfully big thing to follow – so you don’t try… you are not replacing in any way the person that is gone. Once you realise that, it becomes workable – and, in fact, rather nice.’”
____________________________________________
We see that the statement “he has been unable to find the true happiness he had with Linda” doesn’t mean he has no joy. It doesn’t mean he doesn’t love his current wife Nancy. It doesn’t mean he’s wallowing in grief every day.
What I think it does mean is that it was a happier time with Linda, a more intense love affair, a more powerful bond because they had children, a partnership that gave him everything he wanted. He’s not the same without her. If he dwelled on it, it would probably make him depressed, so he doesn’t dwell.
Read McCartney’s tributes and interviews and recollections every time a Linda project has the involvement of him and his children (and there have been many, right up to 2023). He would never disrespect Nancy by comparing her with Linda, but there seems to be a subtext that comes through: Linda is soul mate no. 1, love of his life.
💘

IT was a real family affair when Stella McCartney showcased her autumn/winter collection at LIPA (Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts) yesterday. ECHO Features Editor Jane Haase had a front row seat ...
“GRANDAD,” shouted the little boy in delight as he ran over to the man in the grey suit with the flowery shirt who leant down and gave him a hug.
He might be one of the most famous men in the world but he was just grandad to the toddler who wanted a cuddle.
The McCartney clan were out in force for a special fashion show by Sir Paul’s designer daughter Stella, held just a few hours before the Beatles legend rocked a 36,000 strong crowd at Anfield.
Stella had chosen to unveil her autumn/winter collection at Lipa as a celebration of the city’s Capital of Culture year.
Her children – son Miller, three; 18-month-old daughter, Bailey, and four- month- old son, Beckett – were at the family event, joined by their excited cousin (lol, aunt), four-year-old Beatrice (Sir Paul’s daughter with ex-wife Heather Mills). When not sitting with her relatives the pretty blonde-haired youngster could be seen bouncing on her father’s lap.
Photographer Mike McCartney (Paul's brother), famed for his intimate portraits of The Beatles, was snapping away inside the auditorium.
On the front row were Sir Paul, with his son James on one side and Yoko Ono on the other. Next to her was George Harrison’s widow Olivia, who was in the city for a special tribute to her late husband at FACT on Friday night, as well as Beatles producer Sir George Martin.
They were being watched more than the models on stage by some members of the audience who had paid between £100 to £500 for a ticket for the event, with all proceeds going to LIPA. One keen female fan in the balcony even had her opera glasses out and trained on the A-listers.
Badges saying “Stella” with a shape of a heart and the words “L’Pool” below were given out at the entrance to guests who included Sir Peter Blake, who designed the iconic Sgt Pepper album cover, and number one WAG Coleen McLoughlin. The same message was spelled out in silver balloons suspended from the ceiling above the stage.
Liverpool singer Candie Payne, looking stunning in a thigh- skimming black mini dress, opened the afternoon show. The singer from West Derby obviously impressed Sir Paul who was spotted taking a picture of her on his mobile phone as she performed.
The fact this was no ordinary fashion showcase was evident when the models took to the catwalk. Instead of strutting their stuff these statuesque visions in dresses of varying hues of blue, grey, black and taupe played musical chairs while tottering about in what looked like 7ins platform wedges.
Amid laughter from the 380 seater auditorium, they entered into the spirit of fun as they battled it out to the thumping beat of That’s Not Your name by the Ting Tings.
As balloons descended onto the stage (with “Uncle Mike” retrieving a heart-shaped one for Beatrice) Stella appeared with a present for the winning model and thanked everyone for coming.
She joked: “I seem to have 50,000 members of my family still in this city.”
And proud dad Sir Paul, wearing his trademark suit and trainers and a Stella badge, shouted out: “Three cheers for Stella.”
Before heading off to her father’s Liverpool Sound concert with the rest of the family, Stella explained why it was important to showcase her new fashion range at LIPA, which was co-founded by Sir Paul in 1996 in the grounds of his old school, The Liverpool Institute.
She said: “It’s been a great day, especially with the concert tonight.
“I wanted to do something for LIPA because it’s my dad’s old school and I’m very proud of what he’s done here and the way he’s made the school survive.
“This show was a lot of fun and it’s great to hold it in the Capital Culture year and do my bit for the city.”
Describing her collection as “naturally sexy, naturally confidant and modern”, she added: “I don’t design for one particular woman, but I try to pick up what I think is happening around me and on the streets.
“I don’t get a chance to spend much time in Liverpool but I think Liverpool can compete with other cities.”
And what does the acclaimed fashion designer, who counts Madonna and Gwyneth Paltrow as pals as well as clients, think of Liverpool girls’ style?
“I think they are great but I would say that because I’ve got a bit of Liverpool in me,” she laughed.
The Scouse gliterrati were out in force yesterday. Former Emmerdale star Sheree Murphy, wife of footballer Harry Kewell, was there along with friends, Cricket owner and ECHO columnist Justine Mills and celebrity stylist Lorraine McCullough.
Coronation Street star Alison King, who plays Carla Connor, was among the guests as was Radio City presenter Pete Price.
Dance group Flava, who were semi finalists in the TV show Britain’s Got Talent, also performed at the event.
Stella had said she had wanted to do her bit for the city in Capital of Culture year. I think the McCartney clan certainly did that yesterday.

Hmm my hot take is I think it's a mistake to look at the Get Back documentary and be like "At last, we have the real story!" too much. It's still selectively edited, and even if we had the complete raw footage from those sessions, it would STILL only be part of the picture. Especially as they knew they were being filmed so yeah, clearly they didn't hold back to air some dirty laundry in front of the camera, but I think it's still an influence on what they'd be willing to say or do.
i've resigned myself to the fact that we'll never have the Real Beatles Story, partly because obviously they want to protect their image, and partly because their memory recall abilities are embarrassingly bad and/or downright selective
of course, everything about get back needs to be taken with some degree of salt. especially when james paul mccartney, king of Cultivating His Image is able to have special private viewings of the documentary during the editing process. that being said, i do think it was decently reflective of how they truly were. they let people in because they didn't have much to hide. sure, their behaviour was probably somewhat tailored, but the flowerpot conversation (which was extremely...demure?) tells me that the portrayal of them was pretty accurate
i also think, out of anyone, george would be the least likely to alter his behaviour based on some cameras being there

Revolution! A Beatles Live Show!
So, later today i'm gonna post a beatles thought experiment: what if the beatles, isntead of making the Let It Be album, decided to go on with their idea of playing live some White Album's songs?
In this AU the live show will be recorded and would become a TV special for the BBC. The show will be directed by, ofc, Micheal Lindsay-Hogg and it'll include: an individual 5 minute interview of the 4 Fabs, a live show in front of a crowd and, like the James Paul McCartney show from 73, an acoustic set recorded at Abbey Road studios
For the live show, the band will have a lil help from friend and musician Billy Preston, who will play keys with them in the live show
The acoustic sessions are the 1st thing to be recorded on the january the 11 and the rehearsing of the songs to play live start on the next day the 12
The live show is recorded on the 19th at the Twickenham Studios and the band plays a total of 11 songs: 7 songs from the latest LP, 2 singles and 2 new songs that the band created during rehearsing.
I hope you'll enjoy my lil Beatles fantasy concert!! stay tuned for the setlist!! if u have any questions, go on!

Tuesday, 27 June 2023:
Wild Life (Deluxe Edition) Wings (Capitol) (reissue released in 2018, original album released in 1971)
This was the third album (the second album has yet to find it's way to my mailbox) I bought in the bizarre Sound of Vinyl sale I spoke about in the previous post involving The Jam's compilation Snap!. That sale involved upwards of 175 titles that were free of charge but for which the customer would have to pay shipping costs. The Jam's double album with bonus 45 cost a mere $8 and change to mail, but this double album (with no bonus 45) cost $10 and change.
So why am I buying a Macca album that I've never much cared (and truth be told, like so many other things in my collection, I once owned this back in the day)? Well, it wasn't because it was free. On 13 May I finally made my way through the massive book The McCartney Legacy Volume 1: 1969-1973 and boy, did I develop a taste for those early records of his that are discussed in detail within the book: 1970's McCartney, 1971's Wild Life and 1973's Red Rose Speedway. Even crazier is the fact just two weeks ago I watched the bonus Blu Rays in the Super Deluxe version of Red Rose Speedway because they included one television show I've not seen since it aired on TV and then another show that has never aired.
The first was the one hour TV special James Paul McCartney, a bizarre variety special that is corny beyond cornball. It aired in 1973 and featured the original members of Wings (the McCartneys, of course, along with Denny Laine, Henry McCullough and Denny Seiwell). The second special that McCartney devised and created that is just terrible to a certain degree: The Bruce McMouse Show. Both of these shows are discussed at length in the book. In Bruce McMouse, the premise is Wings are giving a concert (some of it is authentic, some of it obviously staged--Macca's phony introductions to the songs are colossally staged) and their music disrupts a family of animated mice living below the stage where Wings is performing.
This silly premise and show caused dissension in the ranks of Wings (McCullough and Seiwell were none too pleased with the fact they had to act with an imaginary animated mouse family). The animation is pure Saturday morning cartoons and the script (for the mouse family) is abysmal humor like you find in the worst of comedy television.
The live show, on the other hand, is fantastic. Wings is one rocking band. I believe the live show presented was from late 1970, perhaps very early 1971 and Wings is on fire. Denny Laine wears black nail polish (okay, on just one nail, but still), Henry McCullough is a hell of a live lead guitarist and at one point falls down on his back and rips out a guitar solo all while Denny Seiwell proves to be a magnificent drummer. (I ended up really liking the latter two musicians via the book's presentation, and ended up really disliking Mrs Macca.)
So what does that have to do with this album? In this concert they let loose with a live version of Wild Life that I simply got stuck in my head for one week! This is the only version of the song I've played (in my playing the three albums I mentioned, I cherry picked what I played and the title track of Wild Life was not one I played because I had yet to see The Bruce McMouse Show. When I saw this album offered for free on the Sound of Vinyl, I snapped it up after one day of deliberation. I plan on blasting the title track later this week!
Above you see the cover of the album with a hype sticker followed by the gatefold and then the back of the album cover. And man, is that not one of the worst haircuts McCartney suffered from back then? Did he invent the mullet?
Below you will see a close up of that hype sticker on the album cover. The second photo shows you the sticker that is on the back of the album which announces the tracklist.

This album comes with a booklet. Below is the cover of the booklet. That is a drawing Macca did of his vision of what the group looked like. The second photo is the back of the booklet.

I don't normally shoot photos of plain inner sleeves, but this album has an inner sleeve that mimics the original sleeve. It is certainly far different from the normal white inner sleeve as you can see.

When I bought this album I remember thinking these were the weirdest record labels I'd ever seen. I'm not claiming Macca was the first person to use photos on labels, but I certainly cannot recall any before although I'm certain there has to be some I have forgotten. Anyhow, the book I keep mentioning does a good job explaining why Macca opted for his labels to look like this and why he refused to allow the Apple logo on any of his first two post-Fabs releases (think Apple lawsuit and his abhorrence of Allen Klein). You make your claims for Lennon being the smart Beatle and the defacto leader and I'll make my claims for it being Macca. Anyhow, below are both sides of the labels for the first album, the album proper.

The second album is all outtakes, singles and single edits. It too is found in a yellow sleeve, so I didn't shoot a photo of that. But I did provide photos for both sides of the label.
