Shen is a digital comic artist who mainly does short-form humor but also delves heavily into horror, action, and whatever he thinks is cool at the time.

Below is our interview with him!

How would you best describe your art style?

I try to draw cute and expressive. As a short-form comic artist, I don’t have a whole lot of space to work with, so I have to make use of what space I have by pushing poses and expressions and using eye-catching color compositions.

Do you prefer working with digital or traditional mediums? Why?

I work strictly digital. There’s something really cool about how easy it is to edit. I can change the entire color balance of a drawing in seconds, whereas with a physical medium, that would take hours—and even then, you might not be satisfied with it! The ability to separate things into layers also lets me move and resize everything however I want.

From idea to final piece, how long does it take for you to create something?

For a 4 panel comic, depending on complexity, it’s 1-4 hours. It’s really tough going under an hour with this stuff because you can’t really think at that point. You just have to go go go. For comics with more panels and more detail (like, say, a 12-panel horror comic), it can even take several full workdays. It can be stressful to bet all that time on just a single post!

Over the years as an artist, what were your biggest inspirations behind your creativity?

My inspiration to start my webcomic was Ronnie Filyaw’s Whomp!, which had a sort of raw humor that I had never seen in webcomics before. I binged it in just a couple of days and thought, “dang, I didn’t know webcomics could be this funny.” I also really love horror artists on Plastiboo and Trevor Henderson and of course, my comic friends like Sarah from Sarah’s Scribbles, Zach from Extrafabulous, and Justin from Mr. Lovenstein.

What is your favorite thing to draw at the moment?

Really into scary doors lately.

Which 3 famous artists (dead or alive) would you invite to your dinner party?

Alan Moore, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Alan Moore.

Alan Moore would get into a fight with Alan Moore, and I could catch Leonardo up on all that stuff that’s happened since 1519 in the background.

What are your file name conventions?

series name > YY > MM.DD - Comic Name > page.png

I’m straight-up methodical. They call me “Database Shen,” and by “they,” I mean nobody, but maybe somebody will call me that someday.

Who on Tumblr inspires you and why?

@plastiboo, who I've already mentioned, has a pretty active tumblr and always makes amazing stuff.

Astro Observations #2

• I see Sagittarius venuses barely getting into relationships, they tend to get a lot more people just crushing on them trying to ask them out then actually being relationships. These people love hard too.

• Capricorn moon & Aquarius moon 🤝 bonding over emotionally/physically distant mothers.

• Fire mars 🤝 irritable explosions every 5 minutes.

• I’ve also noticed how Scorpio suns tend to rely on their friendships. Expecting their friends to be as genuine as them then being disappointed when their ‘friends’ aren’t there for them like they are.

• Having same element moons is very common with siblings but I’d say this applies to cousins too. E.g. I’m a 9H Aquarius moon and my younger cousins are mostly air moons while my older cousins are mostly fire moons.

• They say the sign in your 4th house is one of your parents’ big 3 signs and that is so true! My 4H is Virgo and my mom’s moon is in Virgo.

• I noticed a lot of great Wattpad writers that I read books from are Virgo suns with Leo mercuries. • What is it with Gemini risings and smirking at everything? • Scorpio risings are so cute!!

• Pluto-Ascendant people tend to have powerful presences especially if they’re shy! Oh and they have good stage presence too!

• I’ve noticed Scorpio risings tend to be attracted to Gemini risings’ playful personalities!

• Taurus risings are so charming! • Aquarius risings are so chill!

�� Virgo risings are literally my other half <3

• 10H suns tend to hear a lot of “I’ve never told anyone this but…” from other people even people they’ve just met. • Aries suns with Aries mercuries are so fiesty & energetic! I love that combo lol.

• Aries suns are literally the only people that exude their placements. I feel like it’s easy to tell wether they have earth placements or water placements, etc…

• Gemini risings are always doing something. Wether that’s multitasking or just bouncing their leg when they’re sat down. Very nervous energy for no reason.

• Earth suns with Air moons are just flat out chaotic!

• I love Water suns with Fire moons, they’re so impulsive and funny without trying. And definitely not the type to get too emotional. But you just know if they’re happy or not depending on the energy levels lol. They tend to wear their hearts on their sleeves.

• Fire suns with Water moons tend to be head strong but overly emotional. Unless they don’t have water risings. They’re also very affectionate and caring. • I swear Capricorn mars are some of the most genuine people ever. They’ll make sure their siblings are doing good and if not they’ll try to help wether that be financially or etc.. They’re the types that wanna put their siblings/closest friends onto the best stuff and they work hard to achieve their goals.

• Nahh because my sister’s a Taurus mars and she literally used to say she wanted to marry a burger when we were like 10.💀😂 Then when we’d eat pizza she’d be like ‘Please don’t tell burger I cheated on him with Pizza’. 😭😭😭

• If you have your luminaries (sun/moon) at 18 & 22 degree you’ve gotta be one of the strongest people emotionally and you’re probably very logical despite your placements.

• Composite charts are soo important because I ran one on me & my youngest sister since we’d never really gotten along and tell me why we have a sag stellium?💀

• Leo rising in composite is literally my favorite rising! Me and my best friend of 6 years have this placement and the rumors are true.🌚

• Taurus placements in composite are really not about that area being sensual. It’s more about keeping things at common ground. Say if you have Taurus moon, it’s about balance between your emotional natures and yes it can be pretty chill. Taurus Mercury—if it’s at Aries degree (1, 13, 25) it won’t even matter because you WILL argue, a LOT. Just like Aries Mercury in composite. • Aries venus in composite is probably my fav! Everything is so genuine and playful. Literally that couple that is always teasing each other or their friends are teasing them about the other! And the emotions just flow open and freely.

• Earth moons in composite literally indicate relationships/friendships that grow with time or just go slowly. They’re also very satisfying if you don’t have a fire sun.

• Pisces moon in composite is so sweet! You both express your emotions, are affectionate towards the other and the union is rather calm. You might also share artistic interests and care for the other deeply. Even if you aren’t the most emotional people.

• Capricorn mars are so passionate and sensual, I’m genuinely tired of people just thinking they’re ‘boring’ especially in composite. Because they’ll make sure you’re enjoying yourself during the act and they’ll know just how to please you. 10/10<3

• Check your Venus persona chart if you feel like you don’t resonate quite well with your venus placement. E.g. my venus is in Pisces in the 10th House at 12 degree and while I do identify with that I’ve also kinda felt like an Aries venus at times. Well it turns out my moon in my venus pc is in Aries! • Capricorn mars can be so vindictive if underdeveloped! They’ll literally plot lol. • If you feel like you can’t really identify with a certain placement, check their persona charts. It’ll definitely help!

• This is just a theory I’ve come up with, but your favourite singer’s big 3 might be in your big 3/6 of your singer persona chart. E.g. my fav singers are Michael Jackson, Prince & Bobby DeBarge. And my big 3 in my singer pc are Gemini sun (Prince’s sun), Sagittarius moon (Bobby’s moon) & Virgo rising (Michael’s sun).

Astrology Observations🧡

hiii there! After a long time, i am here with a astrology observations post, remember to take these with a grain of salt and that they’re just based in what i’ve seen.

-Aries moons and Pisces moons mesh sooo well, literally made for each other, both are very emotional and balance each other out, the friendships and relationships with this combo are just amazing, really cute connections.

-Another combo that works amazingly well, sag and scorpio suns together, there is something about these two, specially in a friendship that is so iconic.

-Opposite ascendant duos work so well, especially in a friendship, they kind of find each other and are so similar yet so different, i enjoy a lot this dynamic.

-The best sexual tension is when someone is squaring or is the opposite to your mars, it really doesn’t hit the same way when they are aspecting with a soft aspect.

Special mention to taurus mars and scorpio mars people, the sexual chemistry is just wow in my opinion.

-If you want someone with the same sexual preference, just look for someone that has the same mars sign as you.

-You tend to attract and be attracted to people with compatible venus signs or at least people with compatible houses. For example, the best venus sign compatibility is when are from the same modality, just cause the way of forming a connection is going to be very similar. For the houses someone with a house in the same modality as yours, or in the same element, are the best in my opinion.

-Venus in the 11th house tend to be social butterflies, another thing about this placement is that they tend to find love interests thanks to their friends? 90% of the people they have been in a relationship/situationship or anything romantic related is because they met this person/people through their friends.

-Venus in the 11th house tend to have a lot of friends, or a lot of people considering them friends, like even if the venus in the 11th native feels like they are alone, it doesn’t seems like it?

-Mars in the 11th house tend to be very passionate about their group of friends, very loyal people in a way, and they hate unfair situations, the type of people that starts fighting if they feel something is unfair in any type of way.

-Having personal planets in the 11th makes you a very open to be influenced by other people, the good things here is that you can be very influential as well, it can go both ways to be honest.

-Aries and aquarius placements, trendsetters, they start doing things and people just tends to copy them or try to mimic them.

-I have this theory that the planets or signs in the air houses of your natal chart can pinpoint what people gossip about you most of the times? Having venus in the 3rd, 7th, 11th makes people super interested in your love life? or talking about your looks, outfits, things like that more often? Sun in this houses, people talking about how egoistical you are, how you can outshine people, or how talented you are, things like that. Moon in this houses can be something like, that you are a crybaby or super needy, or very motherly nature, maybe being the mother of your friend group and being known by that in a way. Neptune there, maybe too much of a drinker, or being known that you use illicit substances, even having like a very shady life and people gossiping about that? i mean neptune as well could be a lot of people just projecting a lot of their own beliefs onto you.

-Capricorn rising in a composite chart, at least for me screams a serious relationship, both people feeling pretty serious about each other, even if they don’t really have a serious relationship sometimes just acting like it? there is something about this connection that makes them to take things serious and a lot of importance. They care a lot more about the relationship evennn if they try to not accept it.

-Pisces in a composite chart, is not understanding anything about these connection, both people just being confused by one another. Even people outside of the relationship don’t understand what is going on with both of these two, like people thinking “are they friends or they have something going on?” it’s not clear, screams a situationship.

-Personal placements in the 12th house in a composite or a lot of overlays in the 12th house in synastry chart, gives a secret relationship, a relationship that is better being secret or very very private. A relationship people can’t know about? It also gives a lot of people hating this relationship, remember that 12th house is about hidden enemies as well.

-I feel that when you first met someone, your opinion is based of where their ascendant falls in your houses? Like the ascendant being the first thing people notices, makes sense that whenever their ascendant falls in your natal chart is kind of the impression you get about them. For example is someone has their ascendant in your 5th house, you can think like they are so fun to be around, or very outspoken, even feeling attracted to them? 5th house is a house of casual sex or flings here and there as well. Someone falling in your 2th house, they could seem very grounded, and calm to be around with? something calm and pretty about their aura.

-Personal planets in the 2th makes someone that takes care of themselves a lot and pamper themselves constantly. Sleeping is very important for these individuals as well.

-Moon in the 2th houses, tend to create emotional connections towards their material things, like a necklace, or teddy bears, things like that, that have a emotional value to them.

-Aquarius risings and Leo risings just having amazing hair, or their hair getting complimented a lot.

-People with air signs in their 4th house, tend to have their houses very messy, like they always lose things or do not put things in their place, things just all over the place, very disorganized.

-Mercury in the 10th tend to be very funny and intelligent, and they are known for that. As well they can be known to have the best gossip or just have iconic phrases? Gives popular vibes.

-Your 12th house sign and planets are shown when you are drunk or very sleepy, you start behaving like that and embodying these traits. That’s why people when they are drunk and under substances tend to change, and it’s very fun to see especially if you are sober and you are in a party, is fun to watch people be completely different sometimes.

-Aries moons are sooo expressive with their faces, they are so reactive with their faces, if they don’t like something is going to show in their face.

-To make a aries venus/aries moon/aries mars interested in you, you need to be your authentic self, they know when you are faking something that you’re not and is just going to make them go away and stray back from you.

-The topics you tend to overthink more are the signs/planets that are in your 3rd, 6th, 9th, 12th house, this applies too where you have sag, virgo, gemini, pisces energy going on, are the topics where you put more mental focus.

-Personal planets in the 9th house natives screams god complex to me, especially sun in the 9th house. Very intelligent people though.

-Sag, Gemini, Aquarius in the 4th house are the people with the most unconventional upbringing, tend to move a lot, or just not having the traditional family type of situation. The most unstable lives tbh. There is a lyrics that reminds me of this energy, is from the song darling by halsey:

“Never knew the feeling of a stable home, been a couple years that i’ve been on the road, couldn’t really tell you where’d leave a stone to visit me when i am dead and gone”

halsey having her 4th house in aquarius makes so much sense.

-Capricorn risings have the most beautiful bone structure, and especially their smiles?? they have the most perfect smiles i swear.

-Aries moon in a composite chart gives me very young love energy, like doing things for the first time with this person.

-The emotional connection you have when someone has the moon sign of the house your moon is in. Let me explain, i have this thing with my best friend, she is a taurus moon and i am a aries moon in the 2th house, the house and the sign matches, and i’ve always feel so soothe by her energy, she calms me and it’s the first person i call when something is going on in my life.

-Sag mercury and Gemini mercury are meant to be together, they just get each other and talk a looot.

-I have never met a taurus placement native that didn’t take care of themselves.

✨️ Composite Chart Edition ✨️

Having asteroids bride (12029) and groom (5129) in opposite signs in the composite chart can indicate a couple who's very different but still complete each other in a balanced way. Like the definition of opposites attract, people usually think "I didn't imagine them together but they actually match and are so cute together", or just a couple that no one expected

Having these same asteroids in the same sign of the composite chart is that couple that everyone sees similarities, they're very similar from each other and they may seem the cliché couple from an american movie (not in a bad way haha) 💕

Virgo mercury in a composite chart is a huge indicator of a long-lasting relationship, because both people communicate well with each other but in a more mature way than gemini, for example, the other sign ruled by mercury. They understand each other's communicative way very well, specially if it's also in a well placed house like the 3rd, 1st, etc

Since I've talked about virgo mercury, let me say my opinion in gemini mercury in the composite of a couple. I think it creates a good communication between each other, indeed, but contrary to virgo, it doesn't look like a couple who talks about long-lasting plans, it seems like they enjoy talking about the present only, which is not the ideal for everyone, but overall, they have a lot of fun with each other

— People say that you usually have the same placements of your parents but in my case I have nothing in virgo, cancer or capricorn, my mom's big 3, and from my dad, I have the same mars and his sun as my venus. However, something interesting I've found out is that their composite sun sign and MC/IC is the same as mine

A couple with 10H mars can be known in the community or just among the family for a couple that fights a lot, specially if mercury is also there.

Leo moon in a composite chart can indicate that this couple have very intense or just dramatic fights, because their emotions get the best of them at times. This can be an indicator of any fire moon to be honest, but with the leo moon is particularly very "flashy" (not necessarily physical though)

Asteroid hehe (20002) conjunct venus in a composite chart of maried couple can indicate that a couple who's generally very harmonic and happy, look at any saturn aspects to see if this is long-lasting or not

Having neptune and venus in the same sign of the composite chart can indicate a hidden relationship or even a lot of lies among the relationship...

Moon in the 5H in the composite is a couple who dreams in having children together, or just really prone to having children if not careful. For ex: my parents have this and my mom got pregnant 3 times

The sign of the asteroid DNA (55555) in the composite of a couple can indicate a prominent placement in the chart of their children

DNA (55555) in the 10H in the composite of the couple indicates their children will look more like the father. In the 4H it's the mom. In the 3H can indicate that the children will look like other familliars of the parents 👀

Moon conjunct lilith indicates a lot of taboo topics are prominent in the couple's dynamic. They probably talk about these topics a lot, if not careful, one of them is even abusive to the other or just influentiates the other a lot to do dark things. If the couple in unevolved, it indicates cheating, excessive jealousy...

Union (1585) in the 1H in the composite can indicate a couple who from the very first moment wanted to be together and bond. This can be a love at first sight placement. Overall, is a couple who takes proud in being together

Moon square chiron is such a painful one to have. This can indicate a karmic relationship, since at least one of them feels a lot of pain when trying to express their feelings. Dealing with each other's emotions brings a lot of pain generally. But if they overcome this dificulty, it can bring healing to each other

Pisces/12H placements in the composite can indicate a couple who's generally confusing/lost, or that couple that had everything to work out but didn't. A relationship that seems like a fairytale at the beginning but in the end brings a lot of karmic bagage to one of them, an unforgettable union (for the good or for the bad)

Moon square sun is also a harsh one, there are a lot of differences that makes being together tough sometimes, a lot of frictions between what they wanne be as couple and how they deal with their emotions

In my opinion, the best houses to have marriage/love asteroids and placements in the composite of a long-lasting couple, or the ones that actually work out more for me, to be more specific, are the 1st, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th and 10th houses :) but everyone feels differently about every house so feel free to comment your opinion. About the composite signs that are best to have in my opinion are cancer, virgo, aries and libra

Another nice aspect in a long-lasting relationship to me is MC conjunct NN (this applies both to composite and synastry), because the couples soul journey is well aligned with their life path (if that makes sense i hope it makes lol)

Qi Ye ensemble cast poster, second edition

Yet another one of those LOL Qi Ye just has that power over me. You know the drill; more info below!

I'll go straight to the point: my main reason to draw this was because I wanted to draw the most somber, dark-looking Helian Qi possible with some dark cross-hatching effect. And because I don't want to draw a Helian Qi solo image because who the HELL does that, I had to turn it into an ensemble cast thing again. I just REALLY like to do that for Qi Ye, for some reasons!!! For a general note, first: shading was a PAIN but making a nice composition and thinking about how to make a hierarchy that both works in terms of storytelling and visual composition was fun. I also liked finding out the "color scheme" to use and I do like lineart. So, now, little notes about each character, and the obligatory name poster just so I'm sure we all know whom I'm talking about:

Jing Beiyuan: I've mentioned it before but drawing Beiyuan is like. The easiest for me, I think, out of ALL Qi Ye/TYK characters combined. He happens to have my general goto "pretty face" (which conveniently has peach blossom eyes). I'm happy with how he turned out here! And got to put the sable around his neck which makes for a nice additional touch. Helian Yi: He's easy to draw as well and I'm glad with how the guan turned out. He initally looked sideways, but I liked it better having him wistfully stare into the distance. Helian Zhao: has the exact same face as in the other, coloured poster, and that cracks me up bc that wasn't even intentional. Helian Pei: GDI I find him so hilarious. He looks so done and out of it. Shout out to all his bird as well, which, I find, really complete the look. Helian Qi: I can't possibly say that I love him as an antagonist because there's nothing to love about this literal trash, but I'm still grateful that we got some of the most rancid stuff going on in Qi Ye just because of him and I'm always here for that. He deserves the villain visual treatment, at least. He was VERY fun to draw and I tried to push that nasty grin and shading as much as possible. He turned out exactly how I wanted him to! (the shading on his face and the balance of light and shadow was a bit of a challenge, actually)

Wuxi: Again, a rather easy one, always pleasant to draw! I loved working on his hair (but complained a lot while doing so)--which I think turned out nicely. Bai Wuchang: Finally! Finally I draw him!! He had to be there, since he's like. The base of the whole Qi Ye plot. Lining him was....... a pain, but at least it looks nice.

Su Qingluan: nothing much to say--I think it's always important to have her there in Qi Ye stuff, and I put her next to Helian Zhao because of how he tried using her--but it did make me feel bad for her when I realised that. Song Ping'an: The real star of the show, lowkey, but always alert and present. Feng Xiaoshu: FINALLY. PRINCESS JING'AN. I'm sorry I took so long to draw her. I want to work on a proper design, I swear. To make up for having completely forgotten to include her in the other spread. I'm so sorry. I like how her face turned out! Liang Jiuxiao: I never, ever, EVER get enough of drawing him. Have I mentioned how much I like him? How much of a great surprise he was reading Qi Ye? How many times I've wanted to high five because finally someone is as confused as I am? I love drawing this very specific smile on him, SO satisfying. Also Bichen said he was "THE Qi Ye antagonist" and I live for that LOL Zhou Zishu: do I really need to say anything atp Jiang Xue: I'm so sorry I put Xiao Xue next to ZZS. The cruelty. But she came out really cute didn't she T_T Anyway that's it. I'm still obsessed with Qi Ye and given my current (totally secret) retranslation project I'm nowhere near done going crazy about this book.

synastry

- venus opposite mars is HOT and better than the conjunction (imo) if you like a push and pull dynamic in a relationship. the attraction is off the charts and both energies feel balanced by the other.

- venus in the 8th house means neither person will ever forget the other. it feels like there is so much history between the two and feelings will last even if a breakup happens lmao

- when venus falls into the 7th house in synastry, the venus person is infatuated with the house person, viewing them as their ideal partner

- the chemistry with moon conjunct ascendant is palpable, they have a genuine telepathic connection. these two can almost feel the other person thinking about them even if they’re not physically together. outsiders can sense it too lmao it cannot be hidden

- JUNO CONJUNCT JUPITER bby i can’t it’s my fav. juno and jupiter were actually married in mythology so these are natural partners. the juno person is completely devoted to jupiter and ADORES them. such a happy, genuine connection

- lilith in the fifth and lilith in the 8th. girl these couples be getting UP to shit in the bedroom lmao these are great placements for sex

- south node conjunct the ascendant (or north node conjunct the descendant) will recognise one another immediately. there is a sense of having met before, an ease or a comfort comes with taking to each other. they have a past life connection and are infatuated with each other

- moon in the 9th is so sweet. they love travelling and experiencing new things together. they have similar beliefs and outlooks on life and the moon person could look up to the house person and admire them for who they are.

- moon, mars or venus in the 9th can also mean that the two come from different backgrounds or cultures. maybe you’re foreign to each other or maybe one comes from a rich family and the other doesn’t

- mars square neptune. i need a moment. this is HIGHLY sexual and the mars probably wants to dominate the neptune and fantasises about it too

- moon in the 12th house absolutely adore each other. both people feel comfort knowing that the other completely understands them, there is no need to explain themselves. moon person is more tender and gentle towards the house person than they are with others

- a first house stellium in synastry with no water house overlays can indicate a one night stand type or friends with benefits situation

- sun opposite moon is a gorgeous aspect. both partners are fascinated by one another and attracted to each other’s personalities

- moon conjunct or trine mars at a tight orb. OOF the sexual tension is through the roof

- venus in the 6th is sweet (especially if it conjuncts the descendant too). the venus person will literally do anything to see the house person smile.

- mars in the 3rd means the mars will be attracted to the house’s voice. STRONG dirty talk placement lmao

- moon conjunct moon or moon in the 4th are some of the most comforting aspects/placements to have in synastry. there was an immediate comfort and trust between the two, a loving, warm connection

- gemini moon in composite is my FAVOURITE lmao these two burst out laughing at each other every 2 seconds. also SO much playful teasing

- aquarius sun in composite is ‘best friend couple’ vibes, so cute

- scorpio rising or midheaven in the composite indicates a POWER COUPLE

- venus in the composite first house means the couple are attractive and ‘look good together’ to others

- moon in the fifth how does it feel being god’s favourite couple? they just have so much fun together and no matter how long they’ve been in a relationship, this joy never fades

- north node in cancer hints at a deeply intimate, long lasting relationship

- mercury in cancer or pisces in composite shows a couple who speak gently and kindly to each other and outsiders notice this, it’s so sweet

- mars in the first are always doing something lmao. they are seen as an energetic, active couple by outsiders and are probably always touching each other/ looking at each other at public gatherings

RQG requests #11, FUNKY LITTLE DRAGON GENDER GUYS!!!! thank you so much for your prompt!! i’d never sat to think about their individual designs before this, and as much as i prefer to plan beforehand, it felt great to just doodle and build them as i went! this is pretty much exactly the result and vibe i wanted, so i’m very happy with this one. it’s really cute! they’re all so cute!!!!! character design is great!!

hmm not sure if i can pick artists like myself (cuz its usually just one or two aspects i think are similar (my art is a big mashup of bits and pieces i love)) but i can def share some artists that inspire me! they'll mostly be on twitter tho cuz thats where i follow most of em ;p

@/Belial43157741 : super cool techwear/light mech elements to their art and great colors. their art usually has more minimalist shading which gives it a super clean look while still showing the form of the hard surface elements in their drawings

@/VibeStrike (NSFW) : love how soft their lines are and the shapes they use to draw bodies! once again someone who uses more minimal shading, although they tend towards softer/more blended colors/shadows which has a very soft and touchable look to it. i totally ripped off their paw style cuz i love it so much lol

@/Deceased_Bunny : their work was what got me to use that crispy ass binary brush and chromatic aberration more! I also really like the shapes they use for bodies and their art made me realize i could just give all my characters cute little paws lol. I love their little tableaus/scenes and how they can populate a room. great vibes

@/godbirdart : Their ref/outfits sheets were a huge inspiration for how i do a lot of my backgrounds. i love how they include a lot of icons/text in the layouts and it gives it this really sleek yet maximalist look, somehow balancing a lot of details while not distracting from the focal point of the characters

@/ISANANIKA : similar to prev, love their text layouts and more graphic approach especially with their work for Howl Out (their clothing brand)

@/scpkidd : love their character designs and how they can incorporate so many colors and hues in a piece while still having it look really harmonious. their use of textured brushes (especially in environments) def was one of the things that got me to start using procreate more

Since there won't be any more expansions (and i'm a chronic procrastinator), i updated my personal top 10 Gwent card arts into a top 20, including the few sets that came since then and shuffling things around a bit.

It's a long one, hence the cut.

Personal top 20 Gwent card arts:

20: Bone Talisman by Bogna Gawrońska It's still the most festive looking thing i like. My beloved blue-and-bright red fidget spinner. I really can't explain my weird attachment to it any other way; i generally tend to like the item arts, maybe it's the collector brain, maybe it's because after Homecoming and most of the expansion sets since later 2019 onwards, these base set trinket adjacent arts became more prominent to me among a lot of new, more dramatic and bleak character and scenery art.

19: Ceremonial Dagger by Katarzyna Bekus The entire set of strategem arts from Merchants of Ofir is honestly packed, but the dagger is the one i found myself putting in my in-game profile the most. Maybe it's the item hoarder brain again, maybe it's the color scheme i find relatable if that makes sense, most likely it's the premium helping a bunch to make that choice too. The background weirdly fascinates me. Does it have anything to do with The Spiral? I have never attempted to really assign any logical meaning to the strategem arts, they're clearly more symbolic than anything, but it still makes you wonder.

18: Ard Gaeth by Katarzyna Bekus Somewhat related, here's another piece of wonky multiverse lore. And once again, it's the color that first grabs attention; the contrast of teal and this dusty red. Then one starts realizing the implied size and scope, the birds help with that, apart from being a cute composition detail. The shattery effect makes it look volatile, unstable, dangerous. Ominous. Which ultimately makes it fit with the rest of the Wild Hunt archetype in more than just lore.

17: Coup de Grâce by Lorenzo Mastroianni There are two wolves in me, one loves bright colors, the other actually enjoys a lot of the bleaker scenes. Although to be fair, Lorenzo Mastroianni is a big contributor to that. And it's no wonder, when he casually drops stuff like this. It's almost symbolic, lot less than strategems but certainly more than other, straightforward "war sucks" Gwent art. How do you visually represent something sad in a way that makes it hard to look away not just because of the tragedy but because of the beauty put into making that image? You ask Lorenzo Mastroianni, the modern classical artist, to do it.

16: Viper Witcher by Valeriy Vegera I once described Valeriy's art as "where Lorenzo uses a tight color palette, he uses every pencil in the case". This one is perhaps not as obvious an example, the whole piece has a very unified atmosphere especially from afar, but still, there are so many colors especially in textiles and skin. They're harder to register sometimes but it's how Valeriy does texture and shading. And somehow, he bridges the bleak and the colorful world too. Admittedly, this card also had to be here because mr. Viper is my son, and the voicelines are done by an actor with the nicest, smoothest bass i've heard since Peter Steele.

15: Naglfar's Crew by Anton Nazarenko I was surprised by how much i ended up liking this one. It's the implications, i think; enchanted to laboriously upkeep this monster of a ship, this 'and if you see it emerge from a breach in the sky, you know you're fucked' symbol of death and decay. It's dark in a way i find compelling, i guess.

14: Serpent Trap by Marta Dettlaff Back to the bright ones, i liked this art ever since i discovered it as Nature's Gift in post-Midwinter beta. The card saw play in Scoia'tael spell decks, and to me it became linked to Francesca Findabair for their shared spectral snake thing. But that all aside, the art is just so pretty. Vibrant, yet not oversaturated. And like the item arts, needed to balance out the cool and badass and the dramatic and tragic. Looking at it now, another point comes to mind; it's still grounded? The way Gwent art at large is grounded compared to other card games. Like it's not trying so hard (both this piece and the game's art in general). That's refreshing.

13: Chort by Bartłomiej Gaweł It reminds me of the first game's main menu. The Witcher 1 main menu is, to me, one of the most accurate representations of this universe, its atmosphere. Even if the "you kill cows, you get ambushed by the fucking baphomet" is a meme game mechanic, something about it is...witchery. Superstition, folk legends, and ultimately, monsters. Or that's my takeaway, anyway. But the Chort art, beside being on the more rare side in-game, has always weirdly drawn me in.

12. Oneiromancy by Lorenzo Mastroianni This was the Novigrad expansion key art before they turned it into a card, and i sure am glad they did. Lorenzo can get a bit weird, as a treat, someone said. Are they Condwiramurs and Corinne? Possibly! But i'll abstain from the schizo theories now. It's a gorgeous, well composed and executed surrealist piece. Inception if it had strong palpable atmosphere.

Denis Villeneuve > Christopher Nolan. but Lorenzo beats both

11: Funeral Boat by, you guessed it, Lorenzo Mastroianni One final yippee for the last card set. And my god it's beautiful. Tight composition can get surprisingly hard to coordinate and make decisions for, but this is so well-balanced. The left end of the boat is closer to the frame, but right side has the most noticeable color, the character's face, and of course the bird to even it out. As if to defend the title i gave him earlier, Lorenzo references Isle of the Dead in a way that, even if symbolic, fits into the universe perfectly. Someone stop me before i start rambling about similar concepts in different mythologies.

10: Dana Méadbh (now the token spawned by Call of Harmony) by Anna Podedworna The most famous Gwent artist enters the list. With a piece made around two, when you think about it very bold choices. The goddess of nature and life, glowing with inhuman light in a black and barren forest. Obscured by thin, bare tree trunks. But to make her emerge and stand out, that was necessary. And it's working wonders. A lot of the Scoia'tael faction is obviously green, all kinds of green, but even a simple choice like making it pop out of black makes the card art stand out among others.

9: Circle of Life by Oleksandr Kozachenko It has everything i usually look for in Gwent art; nature, color, atmosphere. A certain tranquility, perhaps. A little bit of story - the orange badge is the Kerack coat of arms. It's that environmental storytelling thing gamers keep talking about, complementing the character and faction drama of the rest of its card set.

There's a slightly changed, extended version, too, and somehow it's even better.

8: Gezras of Leyda by Bogdan Rezunenko As much as i tend to dunk on Bogdan for having played Blasphemous once and making it his entire personality, Gezras is easily the best school founder card art of the set. Once again, the choice to have these prominent arts on the more symbolic side paid off, and the result is a stalking nocturnal animal out for revenge, backed by a giant image of what simultaneously did him irrepairable harm and gave him the means to defend himself. The premium doesn't disappoint either.

7: Rioghan the Undying by Daniel Valaisis To nobody's surprise, the atmosphere, once again, got me hooked. I love the cold color, the dramatic flow, the big imposing silhouette of a ship in the background. Poor boy is the picture of misery. It's pure melancholy (something not that common in the Skellige faction by the way, which is a point in favor of Funeral Boat too), that i, of course, am inevitably drawn to.

6: Witches' Sabbath by Michal Lisowski Did i craft this card already or not? The realist's complaint towards near-greyscale card art. I share this sentiment, if only for the comedy of it, but with a few notable exceptions, and this piece is the main one. The Robert Eggers comparisons were made already i'm sure, but it really is a take on the last good Witcher 3 quest with a dramatic, more dreamy, or you could say cinematic quality ramped up to 11. Gone is the fanservice present in the game and the unnecessarily grotesque depictions of fatness of other parts of this card set, and what remains is a beautiful, ominous callback to folklore and classical art.

5: Tinboy by Valeriy Vegera This is a baroque painting. The drama. Tinboy doesn't take that scarf off, ever. And here this poor soul is, their last will to live dragging it off him. On purpose? On accident? Probably both. The pattern marking Tinboy as a gang member staining with blood of a victim, something something symbolism. All in Valeriy's signature 'which pencil should i pick up next' style. Underrated piece.

4: Lara Dorren by Toni Muntean They finally got our girl. And once again, despite heartbreak, it's gorgeous. Soft, sweet colors with a necessary hint of melancholy (the lighting suggests it's sunset?), and a pure, painted quality without the need for texture assets. A scene like this is better left a comparatively simple and laid back tribute. Beyond the technicalities, i also really, really applaud Toni for the outfit design. This is the Aen Elle princess, dressed well but for the weather. And the fact her mostly blue clothes with yellow sleeves mirror Cregennan's yellow jerkin with blue details, and her red brooch above the heart might, beside contrasting with the blue, very well reflect his fatal wounds... well. As much as death on card art isn't always done the best, Lara is represented together with that which mattered to her the most. Despite being categorized among the Wild Hunt, she remains herself.

3: Lydia van Bredervoort by Igor Klymenko The joy i felt when this was the art of Lydia they managed to get into the game. It's easily one of the best contest pieces and on par with the best Gwent has to offer - it has mood, and that ever present air of groundedness, realism, and in that, unfortunate tragedy. But similarly to Lara, it shows Lydia being her own person; doing what she loved and was good at without sight of Vilgefortz despite her being known as his ever loyal assistant. Likewise, it doesn't sensantionalize her condition, but references it in a subtle, tasteful, and even clever way. I also love her dress and the overall color palette. Igor understood.

2: Eldain by Anna Podedworna Couldn't help it, this asshole has me in chokehold and he's enjoying it. In my defense, this piece highlights everything Anna is known for, because she's damn good at it. Incredibly sharp main subject of the piece contrasted against a blurry background, which allows for insane details like the strings extending from the top of the lute. To add more fun to it, Eldain isn't even in the absolute foreground, but the piece is still composed smart, so he remains the main focus. His silly red collar on mostly green helps. On top of all that, the art tells a little story, something Anna often does too, and in this case it delightfully sums Eldain up. It's also the best premium in the game.

Honorable mention: Lake Guardian by Anton Nazarenko Like the following #1, this card has sentimental value to me as my second card reveal and artwork i made my best emote of. It was a perfect match, bird gals and all. It's a Sirin, bringing in a more obscure but not unwelcome mythology reference to the universe. And I love her vibrant, marble-like eyes.

1: Dol Blathanna Sentry by Lorenzo Mastroianni ...remains my favourite card art since that fateful day sometime in January 2018. I was just discovering what there was to know about Witcher, downloading Gwent in the first place out of need for more content as i was slowly reading through the first book. Gwent has done a lot to explore and build on this universe, and it has helped me contextualize a lot of things early on. I remember scrolling through the deckbuilder, seeing this art, and being struck by its mood, this aura of secret and wonder. "Oh, so this is what Dol Blathanna looks like..." It's quintessential older Lorenzo. Very much admitted brush work, fog, tight color palette. The little specks of blue in flowers and face paint work just right. Maybe it's a reference to Arthurian myth and Avalon, maybe to Greek myth and Hades, or maybe, as is often the case and was the case later (or earlier in this list), both. It spoke to me and my sense of wonder back then. It speaks to me when i search for comfort now.

Delicious in Dungeon (Dungeon Meshi), by Ryoko Kui, translated by Taylor Engel

I decided to read Dungeon Meshi because I kept seeing people on tumblr posting about the new anime adaptation, and it looked fun and cute. And although I don't watch much tv, there was an entire manga I could read instead! So I did.

The basic premise: in a world where adventuring parties going on dungeon crawls is a thing that happens, one guy has a dream: to be able to cook and eat all the different kinds of monsters in the dungeon, to be able to find out how they taste!

And because his party needs to be able to head deep into the dungeon to rescue a party member who was left behind, and they don't have the funds or the time to collect supplies, all of a sudden they have REASON to need to eat monsters. They're going to forage and hunt for all their meals as they make their way down.

So using that as the basis, the manga goes on to explore the worldbuilding, the interrelationships of the characters in the party, everyone's backstories and reasons for being there, a developing plot, and of course, the ingredients and nutritional composition and flavour of every meal they eat.

I absolutely adored every bit of this!!! The main characters are all a delight, and it's the kind of story where the author sees and shows you the inherent personness of all characters, including antagonists. And the world created to make sense of the dungeon's existence is fascinating, as are all the ways the ecosystems within the dungeon are expanded upon to make sense of the creatures living within it.

And it's a story that knows what its themes are, too, and is able to tie them all together in extremely satisfying ways in the climax of the narrative!

I had this moment leading up towards the ending where I was like:

ohhhh it's about….everyone being part of a balanced ecosystem of life and death where everything sustains everything else! the various human species included! and I was filled through my very soul with this feeling of connectedness myself.

Anyway it was amazing and I had a lot of feels.

And as well as enjoying all of that, I also just really loved our main characters! We start out seeing them all fairly shallowly but over the course of the story as more aspects of them are revealed they're all just…..I love every one of them.

I did struggle with a few aspects of the manga, but none of it significantly affected my ability to enjoy the read:

It kept adding more and more characters, and I got rather lost occasionally trying to keep track of them all. But ultimately it's not vital to remember every tertiary character to get a good read out of this, so it's not as bad as it could be.

In the mid to later parts, it became a lot more plot focused and actiony than I'd really been expecting, in a way that made it harder for me to follow, since fight scenes in sequential art are challenging for me. And occasionally it drew back more than I wanted from its focus on food. But it refocused eventually!

It turned out to be pro monarchy in the end, which isn't my fave, but it's not like a major theme of the manga or anything so I could overlook it.

I kept expecting it to have at least a little bit of textual queerness, and there wasn't any as far as I could see! Even various background relationships or depictions of people's attraction was m/f. But uh. Falin/Marcille, anyone? There are some powerful vibes there. (I'll also accept Laios/Kabru)

💐🌸 Libra Moon, Libra Venus, & Libra MC 🌸💐

(Moon & Venus Conjunct MC)

Now for my experience, I have this with one boy. When we are out in public my emotions and feelings can not be hidden from him or anyone, we are playful together, we flirt openly to one another, I compliment him and he compliments me back. Very giddy with one another and I like to make him feel good about himself, I just have that desire too. We aren't dating but there's a weird sense of known responsibility he has for our dynamic per se? When he is talking to another girl he over compensates by keeping the "peace." Once he talked to a childhood friend and right when she walked away he was over expressing how random and weird that conversation was, even though in my eyes it was a innocent conversation, he felt like he needed to state something. In that circumstance on that night we were really cute together, I grabbed his hand and he leaned down to go and kiss me, and it felt natural. But there has been nights where that wasn't the case, whenever he is with another girl or isn't keeping the balance he acts awkward or tries to run away from the situation to avoid the tension he feels? Another time when we stopped contact randomly for a few weeks and he randomly said to me "I haven't been on snapchat, I haven't talked to anyone at all on there" something along those lines and I was like "no worries, it's okay!" Another time he was with another girl and my sister passed him without saying hi, the following day he was extremely weird and couldn't even say hi to me?He only did when we abruptly passed each other and he nervously said "Hi love" and there's more stories. So even though I have never been upset at him or yell at him with his choices, and (never will I because we aren't dating) he feels the need to keep the balance between us. One thing though, his choices and actions affect me and my face can't hide it even though I wish I could. So the balance is shown when it's off because my face can not hide it. That might also be why he is overly aware of how I feel when he is acting off. He also has always seen me 'done up' meaning hair done, makeup done and so fourth. Even when we snapchatted I always tried to look my best, this could be my natal Libra MC but I thought he was so attractive so I wanted to match him. a

🔮🕸️ Scorpio Sun & Mercury in the 12H 🕸️🔮

Now for this, even though our attraction and playful energy is not hidden from the public, the identity and communication between the two of us lacks. I dont know where I stand with him because when I'm with him I do feel a sense of intense feelings and desires but things are left unsaid, I don't want to overstep or say the wrong thing to him, I want to match his energy and so far that keeps us in a stagnant spot. His friends and my friends know that we like each other, and on a whim I have gone up and kissed him in front of his friends and others but nothing gets passed that. Our communication is limited, we only have each other on social media, and I've known him since summer of 2021 but the stagnancy persists. (This also ties into other composite aspects but I'll talk about that later) I dream of him a lot, could be my subconscious trying to make sense of why I think about him often, but he is in my dreams, almost every night (I believe my Moon is in his 12H). When and if we ever get passed this shallow spot I do feel his energy will feel transformative and feed my natal 12H Venus. He will check that box off for me because based on the time I have spent with him, I can just feel it. He could read my eyes like a story and like I said previously as much as I wish I could hide my emotion, it's impossible.

🪬🌛Cancer North Node & Vertex in the 8H 🌜🪬

So for this placement, I do feel this resonates with our dynamic, at least for me. I am a very emotionally closed off individual, I am afraid of commitment, love, and most of all, vulnerability. So with this relationship he unlocks a side in me where I feel safe enough to be vulnerable, safe enough to give a part of myself to him in ways that seem impossible to others. If I ever do date him, from my souls being I know I won't be the same afterwards, the way I communicate my feelings, how I regulate my feelings and emotions would be altered. Now I dont know in what positive or negative way our relationship would transform myself and my ego but in my gut I know it's possible. Vertex and North Node signifies fate, destiny, these two points showcase experiences we have to deal with and it being in the 8H tells me it's about change, so in my perspective he is here for me to allow the love I want from him, to flow through me instead.

☀️☪️ Scorpio Sun and Mercury Squaring Aquarius Uranus ☪️☀️

So, this also ties into the 12H placements we share. Our dynamic and communication was constantly on and off, we talked then we didn't, we flirted with each other then we stopped, once it got too consistent he felt he needed to back away (He has a lot of natal Uranus influence). The more inconsistent our communication was through social media, the more present he was in person. The more consistent he was on social media the more stand offish he was in person (unless he was drunk lmao). It was a back and fourth tennis match. He still would feel responsible to not hurt my feelings but it was random, one day he would compensate his weird standoffish attitude and then another day he wouldn't try. My attitude would stay the same because I always knew what I wanted but I share more fixed and Plutonic energy, needless to say his Moon and Venus are in my 8H, while my Moon is in his 12H and my Venus is in his 1H.

🪐🌙 Scorpio Mercury Oppose Taurus Saturn 🌙🪐

Now here's another poor communication element. Our Mercury being in the 12H and the Saturn in the 6H. In this instance, work, mundane affairs, activities, other responsibilities and hobbies, have been the main reason why our communication has stopped or dwindled. He focuses a lot on his career and income, and the second he focused only on his career, contact through social media and in person hit an all time low, other responsibilities overtook our dynamic and his attention. And to come to think about it, if he came consistent in my life my responsibilities to my school work and other limitations such as lack of resources I have; would create a blockage within our dynamic as a whole. I could also read this as us wanting to achieve deeper topics or communication but because of outside responsibilities/other factors we don't control or limitations, those desires are hard to reach.

🍄✨💥 Sagittarius Rising 💥✨🍄

I met him online in Summer of 2021, and a few months later I randomly met him when he was on a trip to where I'm from. He became friends with people I knew, and in the early fall he came here to visit them, and I just so happened to of ran into him at a party. So, in some cases the rising signs indicate how you meet and how the public see's you two together, I met him when he was on a trip and my main outings with him was at parties/gatherings where there's alcohol.

🏹 🎀 Libra Venus Sextile Sagittarius Pluto 🎀🏹

From how I've felt with this boy, I do feel our connection would showcase change and growth for both parties. The Libra Venus wants to want the love and the Sagittarius Pluto will ignite that everlasting change and growth within one another. The energy together (when heightened and at it's absolute) would feel cohesive and ignite passion. The letting go aspect to love and to love whole heartedly seems doable and 'easy.'

🍃🪷 Libra Moon Trine Aquarius Mars 🪷🍃

When our dynamic is flowing naturally, without outside factors or limitations, our desires for each other acts well together. We both have similar love languages, our emotions can go into alignment with the way we act to each other. It's natural, and it's easy. Flirting is not difficult and there's no awkwardness when doing so, we have similar desires and attraction (again) is not hidden nor is it dismissed. The emotions in play without dynamic can flow with the actions we are comfortable with taking part it. Passion is never an issue between us two. Another analysis in my opinion is the Mars acts freely and openly to the public with no care of what other people will think, (only time there is stagnancy is when internal problems arise like I said before) The Mars doesn't feel trapped with not portraying it's emotions (whether good or bad). Therefore even when things are off the emotions are again heightened and easy to be expressed whether (I) want to be open or not.

What're your thoughts on the aa movie? I haven't seen it in years but I remember thinking it was very charming, though fast paced. I appreciate their commitment to everyone's dress and hair styles. Sorry if you have it tagged somewhere, I'm on mobile and the search is awful

i've seen it, i think its a great! it's rare to see an adaptation take so much creative liberties with its source while managing to stick so true to the spirit of the thing. phoenix's actor does a great job, and i love that he is capable of going :3 in real life which is not something i knew i needed for phoenix but i definitely did need for him.

i think it does some fantastic stuff visually where the colors are pretty muted and the settings are more fully realized than those of the game in a way that really serves to make the events feel more grounded and less cartoony. but then they balance that out by giving both the settings and costuming the right amount of quirkiness to not be bland or gritty, and to still keep some of that playful energy in there. i think the hologram nonsense they do in the courtroom is a fun way to adapt video game mechanics for a movie and it's goofy enough to make the courtroom drama feel the proper amount of campy. its also just very visually appealing! its well lit and has some solid shot compositions! like it looks good!

the scene where maya gets to yell at redd white is awesome, and im always shocked by how well the movie does making you empathize with yanni yogi of all people. i get the sense that it was made by someone who really cared about its source material but didn't feel limited or constrained by that, and was instead able to channel that into something with a distinct voice rather than being a crude imitation. definitely worth watching at least once.

also the child actors they cast were soooooo cute i want to put apple slices in their lunchboxes

So, for a good....maybe 87% of my life, this one specific scene from the 90s animated sequel movie "Fievel Goes West", has lived rent free in my head. And thing is, despite that I have not actually sat down and WATCHED the film as an adult. And. I finally saw a clip of it on YT and well...just look at it.

No but really look at it. Look at this brief comedic 'hero training' montage clip, and you realize this simple, cute little family blockbuster sequel, had WAY much more mind-blowing effort put in than it ever had to.

-To start, that clearly is the famous classical music piece "Hoedown" being used to inspire the soundtrack here, but it's being made somehow almost even more triumphant and fast in a span of under a minute.

That kind of 'cleverly deliberate homaging classical well known songs but not so much it's obvious or a ripoff' scoring takes a compositional genius. You don't know it's even in there til you listen for it! Exactly as bone-chilling good to listen to as the original and as much now as it was decades ago. My brain was shocked that it still evoked shivers, watching a fat orange cat doing rope tricks. Speaking of which-

THEY DREW THIS. And PAINTED ALL THIS.

Every single bit of it OVER. AND OVER AGAIN. BY HAND.

Watch this clip again, slowed down. Watch all of this cat's many tiny fur tufts and fat rolls, and the wrinkles and expressive motions on this sheriff dog character. Someone had to draw all those moving around. They never had to. Who is the madman responsible for this. It wasn't some iconic Disney legend like Milt Kahl, and we know Do .Bluth was not here, so who the hell was it!

-The whiskers on Fievel and his tail being unnecessarily curled and punching IN TIME TO THE SONG as he is rooting his friend on.

-All these 'mummy' ropes, and the shadow on them.

-The shafts of light and the falling dirt and cave water drips at the beginning when Tiger prances about mockingly in the mine tunnel entrance.

-At 2:17 the bottle glass all reflecting OUR view of Tiger then shattering and the smoke on his slingshot and the excessively cool way Tiger twirls it around and then pockets it like a gun, complete with "action movie/fancy anime fight" style camera panning round and down his body in towards the holster.

-Look at the part at 2:06 with the punching dummy, from the clouds of dust and tiny straw bits that fly out when Tiger hits it, to all the different camera angles and the way they chose to bounce from third to first to third person again: look at when Tiger rushes up at the scarecrow with a pitchfork. They add 'camera shake' as a way to simulate the off balanced way he as a fat, clumsy, but now highly enthused excitable character specifically would run!

-ALL THOSE FEATHERS

OH MY GOD

They drew the movement of ALL THOSE FUCKING ***FEATHERS!!!!😱***

This isn't even a major scene. But it's taken so thoroughly seriously. This is pure art. This is pure gluttonous showing off. That is brilliant. I really cannot believe how strong this lives up.

Well done brain, you rightfully deserved pushing this on me for so many years.

A Little Legendborn/Bloodmarked Scent Theory Part Two

William Sitterson scent profile - Citrus/Fresh

“The infirmary is William’s domain. He strides between the tables, his hands coated in silver aether so thick it looks like mercury. The bright citrus smell of his aether signature fills the room.”

What can I say, I love William and his sunny, yet firm disposition. Fruit in the citrus family include oranges, lemons, limes, grapefruit, kumquat, clementine, pomelo…you get the idea.

Citrus - Citrus oils and resins have the power to uplift our mood and bring peace to a space. Think of all the household cleaners you use, how many of them have a citrus profile? Ever wonder why you gravitate towards those scents? Citrus has been used in many cultures for centuries and has healing and therapeutic benefits. It is no wonder William is one of the few people that can calm Sel down in the heat of anger. He is like a gray-eyed Yoda, even-keeled and level. His tranquil sensibilities allow people to put their guard down and open up that much more. The history of the use of citrus in Ayurvedic medicine in India or in religious ceremonies in ancient Egypt is well documented for its ability to purify a space, bringing positive energy which promotes healing. The sweetness of this scent can reduce stress and anxiety.

Valechaz' scent profile - Soft Oriental, Dry Woods

“He leans into me slightly, and I get a whiff of something dark, spicy, and burning.”

“He steps nearer, until that leather and star-anise smell swirls thick in the air and my cheeks prickle.”

Valechaz’ scent profile is as spicy and sensual as he is. In my reading, I found that his scent calls back to a time of old (much like Incense Daddy Erebus, but more on that later) which is fitting for the 205 year-old most balanced Cambion in the region.

Leather- When used in perfume, leather scents are warm and rich, with a bit of musk. There are smoky and animalistic notes. Valec’s scent was described as burning (we know he brings the heat with him) and the way his eyes turn over red reminds me of a shark whose eyes turn over white before it bites. The scent of leather denotes luxury, sophistication, and masculinity (whatever that means to you). We know Valec is dressed to the nines daily, “Suited and booted” as the old folks used to say. He is also not to be trifled with as he has demonstrated he is 100% with the shits.

Star Anise- Sweet and licorice-y (yes, that is a word), star anise is spicy and intense. It is rich and exotic and is often added to oriental and gourmand fragrance compositions. Star anise compliments a variety of fragrances creating harmonious blends that have endless layering possibilities. Its presence enhances the overall scent, creates depth and complexity, and enables the creation of balanced, captivating fragrances.

The essence of Valec’s scent profile is luxurious, seductive, and balanced on the razor’s edge of ferocity.

Erebus Varelian- Scent Profile Woody Oriental or Woody Amber

“His aether signature surrounds me with scents I associate with ancient trees and holy places: myrrh and saps, incense burning.”

Erebus (affectionately known as Incense Daddy) is such an interesting and mysterious being. He is calculated and opportunistic, and I imagine he has not survived this long without brutal and unwavering tact and a bit of street smarts. His scent hints at his true identity and the power that lives within it.

Incense - Spicy, resinous, and woody, the smell of incense creates a mysterious, warm, richly scented experience. For eons incense has been used in cultural and religious practices dating back to ancient Egypt, China, and India. Its spicy, powdery notes are seductive (like Valechaz’) and smelling incense when none is present can denote spiritual presence or messages from the spiritual realm. Incense can be associated with protection and spiritual growth.

Myrrh - Myrrh tends to go hand in hand with incense. It is described as having a balsamic, spicy, smoky odor. Made from bleeding a Commiphora tree of its resin, in magical circles, myrrh is used with cleansing and purification rituals. It can also be combined with incense for protection against negative energy and rituals related to banishing and breaking curses.

It is no wonder Erebus’ scent is derived from tree resin. Trees hold powerful ancient symbolism (strength, growth, protection) and represent an interconnectedness of all living things. Erebus has been around the block in many iterations, hiding in plain sight. His scent profile calls back to a time when Gods walked amongst men.
