when ur movie is specifically abt subverting the trope of villains in media by having ur main characters be identified by the public as the villains and having them fit into character design & personality tropes that are typically reserved only for villains, but treating them as sympathetic 3 dimensional characters who are forced into their role as villains by society. who eventually work together to publicly oust a character who the public saw as a "good guy" as being a person who was using the supposed "bad guys" as a scapegoat to place blame on for their own bad actions and to redirect public outcry towards so as to draw attention away from themselves. and uses this as a baseline to tell a moral abt discrimination, prejudice, and the importance of police/prison reform....... and then some idiot on the internet discraces ur complex message abt morality with a fucking "good to evil" listicle
Lupin III References in The Bad Guys (That I could find)
Edit: Since the movie came out on Prime Video for the UK, people are posting clips of it on YouTube so I went and changed the pic of Mr. Wolf and Mr. Snake falling to be of higher quality
As a fun fact, I watched in Discord this with a group of friends, and it was all going well until we were all leaving the voice chat. One of my friends said to me: "Bye Diane", and I was *not* ready for the gender affirming vibes that'd set off xDD
Look, I’m just gonna say it, I think The Bad Guys did what Zootopia was trying to do better than Zootopia did.
Don’t get me wrong, I liked Zootopia just as much as the next guy. But a nitpick I’ve had even before the film was released was the fact that it was ONLY mammals. No birds or reptiles.
Why is this a big deal to me? Because the whole point of Zootopia is to use animal stereotypes to make a commentary on prejudice...except the persecuted and feared minority group in the world of Zootopia is mammalian predators. And sure, foxes and the like are likely to be villains in media, but they’re also equally likely to be good guys, and a lot of people see mammalian predators as cute and cuddly. I feel like Zootopia’s commentary could’ve been more poignant if they referenced how unfairly feared and hated "ugly” animals like snakes are in real life...but non-mammals aren’t allowed in this story about discrimination and prejudice! It comes across as a cop-out to me.
Now let’s look at The Bad Guys. There are seven anthropomorphic animal characters in this story, and only three of them are mammals. And sure, the most prominent animal character is a wolf, which is equally likely to be either good or bad in media, but the second mammal character is a former bad guy turned good (which fits with how foxes are viewed neutrally), and the third is a cute and cuddly villain!
The other four characters? Well, how often do you see a snake as a good guy? Or a shark? Or a piranha? Or a tarantula? The fact that the Bad Guys consist of animals that are just as unfairly feared IRL as they are in-universe makes the themes of prejudice and discrimination and stereotypes a lot stronger than Zootopia IMO. Yeah, I can totally believe in this kind of world, a talking snake or shark would have a hard time socializing with a population that’s mostly humans, and the only way they could make it in the world is to reluctantly adopt the “scary” label.
Also, Professor Marmalade is a better twist villain than Bellwether. Sure, most of us saw his twist coming a mile away, but at least it doesn’t contradict his character like Bellwether, who suddenly turns into a completely different person at the last minute. Compare that to Marmalade, who came across as really arrogant and condescending from his introduction, so you hated him even before he turned out to be evil.
The Bad Guys Review (SPOILERS AHEAD!!!⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️⚠️)
So I finally watched The Bad Guys and I LOVED it!
I'll be honest, I haven't read the books but now I'm definitely gonna try finding them. The animation used for this film is phenomenal! Despite being computer animated, it still showed a lot of cartoony moments.
Y'all know the drill, let's go over some highlights!
First things first, Wolf and Snake's relationship in this whole movie was sweet. They really care about one another.
Kudos to Wolf for paying for their meal and leaving a nice tip (despite everyone in the diner shitting their pants at the sight of them)
Love Ms. Tarantula btw. She's so cool!
PIRANHA.
Wolf: looks like they can kill you but is a cinnamon roll
Piranha: looks like a cinnamon roll but can actually kill you
Shark and Tarantula: looks like a cinnamon roll, is a cinnamon roll
Snake: looks like they can kill you and will actually kill you
The small detail of Piranha and wolf calling each other hermano
The photos on the fridge. I need to see them again. They're just too wholesome!
Diane is my fav-
The moment I saw marmalade's little bitch ass, I knew something didn't feel right. He gave off weird vibes.
How did the waiter's clothes suddenly fit piranha?-
Wolf is just too wholesome! My heart-
The chief of police reminds me of the guy from Lupin the third (I forgot his name-)
The whole heist scene
The scene where they're trying to be good was interesting to see.
Wolf got ran over. My baby-
The song sung by piranha was a bop-
On the topic of piranha, Anthony Ramos is fantastic in the role of Mr. Piranha!
Rot in hell Marmalade-
These police officers are just listening as they are discussing how marmalade betrayed them and listening in on their friendship falling apart-
The crimson paws entrance was so cool!
Also, Diane revealed her face to the bad guys as the officers were also there, locked in a cell. So did they not see it was her or-?
And then for the duration of the movie, my heart was suffering from emotional damage and then it was restored as the movie came to an end.
Marmalade got what was coming to him. Nuff said.
That's all I got for now unfortunately.
In conclusion, the movie was amazing and I totally recommend seeing the bad guys for yourself to witness it all for yourself!
D.O.B based off the the Jail cards. Sadly since Mr Shark and Ms Tarantula didn’t get any shown :( or if they didn’t I didn’t see them! but here they are ( including how old they’d be during the ending credits scene! )
Mr Wolf - 10/19/1991 - October 19th - 30 ( during movie ) 31 ( Ending credits )
Mr Snake - 07/02/1965 - July 2nd - 57 ( During Movie ), 58 ( ending credits )
Mr Piranha - 12/13/1996 - December 13th - 25 ( During Movie ) 26 ( ending credits )
Even with Marmalade being the villain being a cliché ((note I did not read the books this is purely from a movie going perspective)) I still really enjoyed the manner of this reveal, probably because they focused more on what it did emotionally to Wolf and everyone instead
