This is me giving you permission to talk about your SuperChargers AU!! Literally just anything about it!! I love seeing people’s different takes on what a Kaos redemption arc would look like. I still get so sad when I think about how Kaos just goes back to being evil in Imaginators. Like man c’mon. We could’ve had it all.
The power you’ve given me..unreal. But I think about a Kaos redemption arc pretty often since multiple people on here have talked about Kaos’s childhood and stuff like that.
Which is why I think in this Superchargers AU, instead of fighting Kaos before the darkness. You’d fight his mom.
Tumblr media
I didn’t bring it up in this. But I wanted to talk about how maybe after Kaos’s button scene with the darkness. Kaos is still not entirely faithful to him, which means that the Darkness can’t get entirely in his head. To get everything he wants from him, for the absolute destruction of Skylands. Without that, Kaos is practically useless, not truely a devoted Kaos Clan member. Unlike his mother. Who at this point I believe the darkness could use as a manipulative way to get Kaos to do things for him and a threat, but only now sees her as a way to progress in his own plans.
The Darkness brings Kaossandra out of her prison, her devotion to the dark is far stronger than the absolute lack of affection she’d ever felt for her family. Taking away Kaos’s head-thing, they leave him with only the most weakest of magical powers on some random isle for him to hopefully die. You (The skylander) find him awkwardly standing there in his torn emperor robes, beaten up, and swearing to the ancients he hasn’t cried.
He doesn’t really have any other options other than to go with you, but he isn’t seen anywhere. Opting to stay inside the airship for a long while. Paranoid about the looming chance of the world ending at any minute, and the fact that it’s all his fault, missing Glumshanks. Flynn mentions him now and again, talking about how he’s feeling and not really eating. Cali doesn’t trust him, blaming him for their problems but she can’t help but feel a little bad. Hugo continues to assist with the next mission, fearing Kaos’s presence, but is curious about the lack of his usual ‘mark of darkness’.
Over the long run, which I mean Kaos being dragged along every trip and having to help Flynn and Cali unload and reload the airship with things. He warms up just a bit, standing in the overworld. Never-not next to one of the two, as the citizens still distrust him. (And he’s not good at being normally social on his own, not a fan of small talk) He’s still strange and egotistical, but less- evil. Kaos finds it strange that he can still preform magic without the mark of darkness, frustratingly weaker than before-but still magic. He often “steals” spell books from the archive, much to Hugo’s minor inconvenience. Since he always announces when he’s taking one.
I don’t really know how the ending would go specifically. But I know that Kaos would be furious, fed up with the endless manipulation from both his mother and The Darkness. Using familiar voices and faces to try and get him back on their side, he just can’t take it. Trapping his own mother inside the rift engine, the Darkness laughs believing that it’s tricked itself into being free forever.
[que epic fight sequence for Kaos and the Skylander that I’m too lazy to describe]
Being knocked out of the darkness’s rift thing from the very end of superchargers- the Skylander is fine. Having the portal master’s power to help them. But Kaos is scarred. Once again landing on the isle below, his arms and back, inky black with…whatever it is. As if to silently let him know that the darkness would be coming back. He doesn’t rlly care though, just staring at his hands. Taking in every decision he’s made this far, he almost regrets it, thinking about his mother. Until the voices of Cali and the others finally snap him out of it, with Flynn’s coat being draped over him. He didn’t even notice how destroyed he had become. Damn. Wait…does this mean he has to relearn magic again?

The Animatic of the unreleased V9 ending doubles down on ZERO consequences
So... Two months ago (Jeez, how the time goes) i created a thread on the ending of V9. In it i very much stated that the ending of V9 continues the trend of being not really about hope, but being about wish fulfillment, considering that any negative consequence or logical problem that would arise post V8, just seems to be gone.
Well, quite recently, during this years RTX, we were shown the unreleased V9 ending/epilogue animatic that was never produced for many reasons that are unkown to us, but most likely relate to budget etc.
And what we saw of it, was the continuation to double down on some decisions, while showing that the cast itself is being confused about what they are creating in the first place.
The double down
Remember discussing how Amity looks like an airship and wondering if an airship is in front of it? Well, wonder no more. We have an explicit confirmation that Amity was converted into a warship. Let it sink it. Vacuo, an anarchic state with depleted resources and basically no organized government or anything of the sort, retrofited Amity into a warship, while Atlas, a superpower had problems with making it into a Satelite.
Tumblr media
Script from Eddy Rivas, one of the writers
There is nothing more "fuck you" to the logic of the world that is set up than this. This is "The emperor had a desolate planet build hundreds of star destroyers" level of nonsense. How does Vacuo do this in any way shape or form? Who cares? HOPE! ITS ALL HOPE! And somehow hope has manifested in the ability of Vacuo to retrofit airships the size of the Amity Colliseum...
Then we get told that "Its bad, in facts its probably never been worse" only to get a Disneyesque shot of everyone getting along, sharing food, Qrow catching someone falling down etc. But Qrow said its bad right!? So its bad right!? Well, remembering V4 and how we were told that actually Menagerie is a bad place to live, only to see an island paradise for 2 volumes, this sadly seems like yet ANOTHER example of "Lets say that things are bad" and then show the completely opposite. Because remember, after V8 ended, many people, especially critics called out that sending the Refugees to Vacuo is a shit decision, and yet here we are, and everything is SHOWN as perfect, despite that it should not be.
Come to Jesus
The Animatic before the end then shows a literal SHRINE to Ruby. I still recall people telling me that im wrong about V9. How Ruby was just told "She is good enough" not thats shes perfect, etc. That "everyone makes mistakes". And here we are. Despite the shitty decisions in V6-V8, Ruby now has a literal shrine. Because if any of us had any doubts about who the designated hero of the show is and how perfect she is, this should serve as a reminder.
Tumblr media
Ruby is perfect. The narrative says shes perfect. So she is perfect. Now worship her. Ugh...
I have always called out the fact that Ruby seems to be able to do literally anything, and the narrative will bend itself over to make her right. But for it to be rubbed into my face like this? With a literal shrine? Man... What am i even supposed to say?
Im genuinely convinced that we could be shown RWBY stabbing a child and then for it to be revealed that the child was actually Grimm in disguise.
The Confusion
I think my favourite part of all of this was the fact that we were shown, once again, that RT has absolutely no idea what any of them are doing. Not as solo people, but as a team. As a team, these people are supposed to communicate with each other, and yet time and time again we hear about miscommunication issues or other such nonsense. One would imagine that they would have, i dont know, a project lead to organize/lead everyone, but thats probably asking too much from the "indie" company that is RT.
Anyways, the animatic contains a scene of Winter using her maiden powers to etch out "Dont come back" on some kind of memorial. At first, theories were awash, to who was this said? Until a rumour came out that it was a memorial to Ironwood.
Tumblr media
Now, this was just a rumour, but not an unexpected one. We already know that the writers of RWBY seem to believe that the characters they create are real and are very much not shy in doing everything in their power to destroy/ruin them, with Adam being such a perfect example especially with the writers hating him so fucking much that the implied slave branding he got they instead said that he got as basically an "accident" in a fight due to him being an "asshole". Which is... Very "nice" writers...
So this? This would not be unexpected.
However then...
Tumblr media
(Arryn Troche (Ex-Animator of RWBY))
We got clarification that the memorial was to team RWBY? Which quite frankly, confused things even further. I have no idea what the writers were thinking about this exactly? Nobody, and i mean NOBODY would see "Dont come back" message and think it as a "positive" one, it would be taken as a message of negativity. The messaging here is horrible.
For people more interested in a break-down of this specific choice, i would reccomend "Itsclydebitches" Tumblr account and their post on this subject.
My opinion
The animatic is just shite. Like, im gonna be honest with you all. It doubles down on the same illogical BS, pretending to be hope while its actually just wish fulfillment. With all of the problems that V6-V8 would have caused just gone... Going so far as to ignore their own lore of Vacuo.
And the whole Winter memorial thing just further shows that there is little thought put into writing any of these things, logical thought i mean.

Asura Appreciation Week - Day 3
DAY THREE - AUGUST 22nd Does your OC have a krewe? What do they specialize in? How do they get along with each other? @asura-appreciation-corner
A bit late with this one because y'know, new expansion launch and all. And I'm dumb and didn't prepare any of these posts in advance
The story of Tenakk's little band of misfits is going to be a bit of a long post.
Tumblr media
So I'll start with the first three:
Tenakk Aside from the krewes he was a part of during college, Tenakk never really had a krewe of his own for a while. He was content to work alone most of the time, which was part of the reason he ended up joining the Durmand Priory later on. Aside from his research into destroyers, he was also a really talented artificer, which he used to earn a little extra income.
Milo Milo was raised by humans, and so his mannerisms and world view is quite different from the average asura. His first visit to Rata Sum didn't go so well, and he struggled to understand and fit into asuran society. This is where he met Tenakk for the first time, and they became good friends. What Milo lacks in fighting ability, he more than makes up for it with his talents in healing magic and crafting medicines. He is very sociable, and has many contacts from the medical work he carried out around Divinity's Reach. If Tenakk ever needs a particular item or information, Milo probably knows someone who can provide it.
Sparxxi A typical Dynamics student; she likes tinkering with machines, and creating gadgets to tinker with more machines. She used to be part of a krewe in Lion's Arch, creating festival decorations and organising fireworks displays. When Scarlet's attack on the city destroyed everything she knew, she was left sitting around in one of the refugee camps with no home or friends. She noticed Milo and Tenakk helping out some of the refugees, and she pretty much latched onto them, refusing to go until they gave her a job. Tenakk eventually relented and offered her a job as an assistant.
For a short time, the three of them worked together in Tenakk's workshop/makeshift lab. They didn't consider themselves an official krewe at the time, it was pretty much 'Tenakk and Friends' doing odd jobs and projects.
And then Sparxxi heard about the Pact forces mustering in the Silverwastes, preparing to go to war against an Elder Dragon. She really wanted to get a closer look at the airships, and ended up sneaking aboard one of them. Just before the fleet set off into Maguuma to fight Mordremoth. Oops.
About two years later, Tenakk recieved a letter from her which essentially read: "Hey I found these awesome Mists researchers, you should come join us! Also, I'm alive!"
Which leads us on to the next three:
Tumblr media
Tenkatt One of Tenakk's best kept secrets is his failed experiment with the Infinity Ball; a device intended to show a glimpse of a possible future. But unbeknownst to him it did kind of work, and an alternate future version of himself materialised. But unlike the in-game story character of 'Grand High Sovereign', this alternate Tenakk has no desire to conquer the world, he just wants it to not fall into Void as a result of killing Elder Dragons. So it's safe to say he's not a fan of the Commander.
He stayed out of sight for a while, and joined up with the Aetherblades to poke around with their Mist portal technology. He had no interest in working for Scarlet, so when the 'Blades ended up trapped in the Mists after Scarlet's death, he took the first opportunity he could to steal one of their airships and escape the Mists long before the others figured out how to do it (he's done this before). Problem is, the portal he opened up just happened to lead right into the middle of the battle between Pact forces and the Mouth of Mordremoth in the jungle.
Here he crossed paths with Sparxxi, and her reaction was basically: "Wow, Tenakk has a twin brother!" She offered to fix up his airship and persuaded him not to go after the Commander. Many of the events he had witnessed were different from the ones he knew from his alternate reality, so he decided to stick around to see how things play out.
He and Tenakk often bicker about the best course of action, and he still doesn't agree they should be helping the Commander. The one thing they seem to agree on is that cats are great. And if anyone asks: they really are brothers.
Trellia Not actually an asura, but an inquisitive Mist creature that Tenkatt encountered while stuck in the Mists (if you're a GW1 fan, basically like Razah). Technically genderless, but has chosen to take the form of a female asura in an attempt to blend in. Trellia is a skilled Chronomancer, and also seems to have the ability to detect and manipulate some Mists-related anomalies without the need for technology.
Mellu (The hat isn't canon, it's just the best screenshot I have right now) Mellu is a seasoned Mist Warrior who seems to have lost all memory of her life outside the Mists. She often ventures out into the Mist War and returns with a variety of resources ranging from useful materials to odd/bizarre trinkets.
Special mention: Fluffy
Tumblr media
Fluffy was adopted as an adorable griffon chick under threat by Icebrood monsters in the Shiverpeaks. He allows the krewe to go places where an airship would draw too much attention (or can't reach). He likes griffon races, fish, and Aurene.
**---The Moebius Krewe---**
(sometimes I call them the Infinity Krewe because I still can't decide)
Officially formed in 1331AE to track and deal with the rifts left by Kralkatorrik's rampage through the Mists, although they had been tracking other anomalies prior to that event. They often collaborate with the Commander to collect data and send help to citizens affected by creatures which have escaped from the Mists. I guess you could call them a first response & rescue team specialising in Mists-related events and disasters, though they often take on side-projects in general Mists research.

One of the (many) things that I love so much about "and you." as an event so far: it emphasizes how Danchou's kindness is innate, unchanging no matter the circumstances.
I've personally never had a problem with Danchou always wanting to help others. For one thing, it's good business--the Grandcypher crew is well-known and has steady upkeep now. For another, it just seems like common sense, doesn't it? The Sky Realm is huge, and often people's only hope for help is if an airship comes along. "Will work for shelter for the night", in other words.
But I have wondered before if Danchou's desire to help comes from being lonely. "If I help this person, maybe they'll stay longer", "If I look after everyone, they won't abandon me". That may still be the case! But now we have an alternative, equally intriguing option.
Since Danchou is "destined to be born no matter what routes the Sky Realm takes", perhaps that kindness is a facet of being the Singularity? A person who wants to help everyone, whether aligned with their morals or not...that's a good candidate for the world's savior or destroyer. (Ideally the former, but hey, this is why AUs are fun!)
One last note: it's not like Danchou is entirely trusting of others, either. They do have common sense. See: bringing Lobelia on to keep an eye on him, or being rightfully suspicious of Seofon. It's easy to forget Seofon was seriously considering killing them for the Seven-Star Sword...maybe we'll see that in another timeline soon?

Been replaying Kingdom Hearts (again, again), and I am continuing a tradition I started with the first stream replay a few years back; making my gummi ship something from pop culture! I originally was shooting for just remaking shmup ships, but it splintered off from that pretty fast into just whatever space ships seemed cool to make.
Starting at the top we have the newest one; the OUTLAW STAR! From the anime... Outlaw Star. This was suggested by a friend/viewer, and I thought it was a great idea partially just cuz KH1 has those little grabby arms, and if you know Outlaw Star, you know thats important!
The next one is also a deep cut; the Weatherlight from Magic the Gathering! Yah like the card game. I play it. And I just really enjoyed translating the Weatherlight's fantasy airship into a little chubby gummi ship.
Next one is an Arwing from Star Fox. I don't think I need to explain that one, it makes too much sense even.
Then going into KH2 we gain teeny ships! So I abso-friggin-lutely had to make the Vic Viper from Gradius, and an option which I can select twice! This works even better then it seems already, since you can change the teeny ship's positions and one of the settings is they follow behind the ship... just like options do in Gradius! Too perfect.
And the final ship so far is a Star Destroyer from Star Wars! With a couple little Tie's, one Fighter, one Interceptor, to protect it! This one feels a bit weak to me just cuz its a big grey cheese wedge. There's all these supposed options for altering the shapes of gummis in KH2 but I absolutely could not figure out how to use the option.
There's no KH3 ship (yet), because when I first played it, I saw the decorative grabby hand part and thought "oh man! I gotta make the Endymion from Einhander!" only to discover thats already a secret ship in the game, and so is a boss from einhander as a gummi ship super boss. So like... damn Squenix, you got me. I'll come up with something this playthrough though!

Fear the Reaper, Part 5
This is part 5 of how my WoL made their pact with their voidsent, and became a reaper! I hope you enjoy it! Click here for Part 1! I couldn't remember walking out of Amdapor Keep.
Really, my memory of everything after that scythe had been placed in my hands was... broken. It was only once the lights of Gridania appeared in my vision, looking more like twinkling stars appearing in the night sky as the forest cleared, that I realized I was in motion at all.
My limbs were uncooperative at best, more akin to deadwood than the instruments of a destroyer of gods, only shuffled forward by the gentle tug of... Her.
It was a calming feeling, one of assured direction. That despite my lethargy, I was still capable of movement, even if it was at her insistence.
It was only a slight feeling of horror that matched with the subtle tug on my limbs, that there was this other within me able to subconsciously affect my will in such a way. But it was tiny, minuscule, ignorable.
Once I stepped through the Blue Badger gate, seeing the Roost rise out of the woods beside the great waterfall, it's great water wheel gently shifting turn over turn, I felt myself begin to come out of disassociation.
My first thought was a welcome one, growing from the chattering of the crowds of the aetheryte plaza, a noticeable buzz on the wind.
Home.
The voidsent inside me bristled, flexed a question in my minds eye.
"This? This is home?"
I didn't deign her with an answer, instead pulling my heavy limbs one after the other, my memory harkening back to the first time I walked into Blue Badger gate as a young woman.
I'd just left my family's home in Gelmorra, with nothing but the bloodied spear on my back. An Ixal attack had all but massacred the remaining members of my small community, leaving me with nothing.
No one to call on for aid.
So, with nothing left to me, the last of my family... I made for Gridania. Finally swallowing the Duskwight pride to accept it's walls for some semblance of safety. I heard Hydaelyn's call, got room and board at the Adventurer's Guild, signed up with the Lancer's guild, took missions from Mother Miounne... And the rest they say, was history.
It's as much as my home as any.
This answer seemed to simmer the 'other' in me, as I poked and prodded at the fact that there even was an 'other' consciousness in my person besides my own.
I could... feel her. I could almost taste her displeasure at Gridania, tinged with a bite of brief wonder.
What did she think of my home, this... creature?
"I will tell you my thoughts when you've earned the right to know. Right now, we need sustenance. Immediately. For that, we need to get to Drusilla."
Regardless of the frankly, horrifying fact that she could apparently read my thoughts, she wasn't wrong.
I was starving.
Now that I was more present in my body, the need for food was all consuming. I dipped immediately into the Roost, checked the time for the next airship to Ul'dah, and sat down to order... something.
The moment I sat down, Naoh, one of the servers was at my table waiting patiently for me to tell her what I wanted.
The moment I considered her gaze, it suddenly felt like everyone's was on me.
Miounne's from the Adventurer's guild desk, the other patrons, folks waiting for their airship, everyone.
My eye bounced from face to face, daring their gazes away, even though most were filled with smiles and nods of acknowledgement. My presence was welcome, accepted, expected.
Yet now... I felt like a foreign trespasser in my own city.
"Because you are."
"Miriael?"
I blinked, unsure of what to make of the voidsent's words in my mind, finally comming to grips with Naoh staring at me with concern.
"I'm sorry?" I mumbled out in a lackluster stutter. The miqo'te's ears flickered, whether in concern or annoyance, I didn't know. "I've been saying you name for almost a minute now. Are you okay?" She asked, her eyes wide.
I didn't know I could answer her honestly.
"Just... the usual please. With a side of bacon, I'm famished today."
Naoh gave me a brief but unsure smile, before turning away to the kitchens, leaving me alone with my thoughts as passerby to the airship dock below tried not to stare.
Or... As alone with my thoughts as I could be from now on.
"Oh please. It's not like I can dig through your memories. I can only get the general jist of what you're currently thinking about."
I wrinkled my nose as the smell of food wafting in from the kitchens began to make my mouth water. I hoped food would distract me momentarily from the horror of my new reality and the... thing I'd taken in.
What did I even call her?
Do you... have a name?
A feeling of mirth shot through the back of my mind, a chipped laughter.
"Names are useless. I am your avatar of destruction. The devourer of your enemies. I need no name other than what I am. Voidsent."
I sat on that thought, as Naoh brought out one of my favourites. A stack of pancakes, with indeed, the requested side of bacon, and a hot coffee.
I dug in as I continued my wordless conversation with my passenger.
You need a name. I can't just call you 'the being' when I have to inevitably explain your presence.
"I assure you I do not."
I swallowed a chunk of fluffy deliciousness soaked in syrup, lightly swirling the coffee in my mug as I debated.
You say you're an 'avatar'. How about... Vata?
The being inside considered, I could almost feel her thoughts. I silently sipped at my coffee, wondering if I could... just somehow make this work. That maybe it was the same as it had always been. Just picking up one more ally for the road.
"What would it cost me?"
I stopped with a forkful of pancake halfway to my mouth, frozen in mid-air. The question was unexpected, and frankly, absurd.
I shoved the fork in my mouth, hungrily swallowing, and immediately moving for more.
Nothing, as far as I know. Do you like it?
"The name? I'm... not sure. I think?"
Then you're Vata. Simple as that.
She seemed to still in my mind, retreating from my presence as I cleaned my plate. The feeling I got from her was now wonder. A brief bite of amazement. Apparently this small thing was bigger than I expected, and despite the clear violation of my body, it made me happy for her.
My own satisfaction felt hollow though, as once my plate was clean, I was still hungry. I asked for seconds, and got through that almost just as quickly.
It was only once I was halfway through my third plate, a plain look of concern on Naoh's face as she eyed me from the counter that I began to sense something was wrong.
I felt full. Like my stomach was set to burst.
Yet I was still starving.
"Vata."
I spoke her newfound name aloud, slowly setting the fork with sugar soaked pancake down. The presence in my mind jerked, unsure.
"What?" she demanded, her voice tinged with pretended offence, like I'd disturbed her from some long dead nap.
I stood from the table, nodding to Naoh as I put enough gil for a hefty tip onto the table, walking the few steps to the airship stairway.
What... Is happening to me?
My question burned in my mind, my inner voice seething with knowing anger.
"I told you. We need sustenance. We've wasted precious time on your fool world's version of 'food'."
Her tone reminded me of my mother, explaining the bare necessities to me over and over and over again.
"Our aether is one now. You, my darling, are eating for two."
I sucked in a breath through my teeth, just as my airship lurched into it's port.
"Son of a bitch." I cursed under my breath, wishing I could tear into my insides and rip every inch of her out.
"I'd like to think my mother was kind, but I was too young to know better."
The voice beside me startled me enough to reach for my blade, a phantom limb that was no longer there. I whipped around in an alarmed dash to find Estinien, standing there in his armour with his arms crossed, looking like he'd been standing there for hours.
The smile on his face slowly began to waver, before it shifted back into his more familiar brood, his well-trained eyes darting to where my fingers ached for my blade.
The blade that wasn't there any more.
"You... alright?" He asked, without any subtly. I didn't know if he was capable of it.
Vata swirled in my consciousness, as I forced my breathing to calm, my staggering heart to slow. I was in Gridania. I was safe. It was just Estinien, I could trust him. My shoulders only slightly relaxed for my efforts.
"I'm... I'll be better. Soon." I managed to mumble out, standing a little straighter.
He nodded, the worry not disappearing from his face entirely. "Good."
His one word response was almost exactly what I needed to hear. It was so... familiar. Estinien wasn't capable of lying, or imagining anyone else to lie. To him, if I said I'd be better, I'd meant it.
Even if I had no idea if that was anywhere even close to true.
"Heading back to Ul'dah?" He asked, a bite of curiosity in his voice.
I nodded, beginning to step backwards to the ticket booth. "Someone I need to see before I head back to Broken Glass. I thought you returned days ago... What are you still doing here?"
He shrugged, and then did the one thing I really hoped he wouldn't.
"Waiting for you." He said as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, as stepping to follow after me.
Oh Fury damn it all.
"Excellent. If we need a snack before we arrive, he'll make a delicious meal."
Quiet you.
"It's true. He's more aetherically dense than most. Tearing into his flesh-"
Shush!
"Are you sure you're alright?"
I looked up, almost surprised we were sitting on the airship, minutes having gone by without my knowledge of it. The airship was already undocking quickly and quietly from the Roost, slowly ascending through the trees southwards. Estinien sat beside me with his arms hanging over the side railing, spear leaned up against his shoulder... much like my scythe against mine.
My hands clutched against it, my knuckles white in desperation as Vata paced in my mind. Pinpricks of her claws at the back of my neck.
"I'm... I will be. I have to be."
He nodded, a few grey strands of hair flickering out of his tight ponytail as the wind picked up, eyes cast towards the skies as if still hunting for dragons.
More likely he was looking for the Blasphemies of the Final Days. The memories of our fighting in Vanaspati weighed in my mind just as much as they did his, I was sure.
But no... The current thing weighing on my mind was my hunger.
My mouth watered as we flew through the skies, my mind deep in thought about my favourite meals. Spiced soup, Knight's bread, grilled cheese...
But nothing I could eat would silence this... unnatural hunger.
I watched the trees fly by underneath us, the hunger now hard to think past.
"I told you. We should've gone to Drusilla immediately." Vata's voice in my head was the only thing powerful enough to bite through the overwhelming feeling. "Now not only have you wasted precious time, you've gone and put us up in the air where the only thing we could feed on..."
My eye felt pulled towards first Estinien beside me, and then finally, the pilot, looking bored behind the helm.
"... Is them."
I blinked, clenching my scythe tighter, terrified of what she meant.
Vata. What do you mean?
I could almost feel her caress of my throat, trying to calm me down. Any sign of her earlier frustration gone.
"Voidsent are eternally hungry. We live to consume, that is our curse. I am practised at controlling it, by age and by power both. Now that our aether is merged, you feel what I feel, and you're... Inexperienced. I've been stuck in Ampador for years, sitting with my hunger."
I felt the pause, the weight of her head against mine, the brush of her lips on my brow as she deftly laid out her curse that we now shared at my feet.
"And now you know what it's like."
I knew I heard her words, I knew I registered them, but they were just the latest in the lone line of horror that was my life lately.
What was worse, having my entire body robbed by Zenos? Or having eternal hunger?
In comparison... This wasn't as bad.
I felt a sigh escape me as I eyed the pilot hungrily. How did I even try?
I shook my head in alarm, briefly amazed that I'd just considered feeding on a random civilian's aether.
Estinien shifted beside me, letting out his own sigh.
"I'm sorry I tried to ambush you about Zenos the other day. I know you're... having a rough go of it."
It took active effort to shift my gaze from the pilot to Estinien, To not lick my lips in hunger, or wonder what he'd taste like.
"It's... Fine. I wasn't in the best headspace, and I'm not sure I am still." I managed to say mostly through my teeth. "I'm sorry... I said those things."
He nodded, leaning forward, placing his spear on his lap. "There's nothing to apologize for Miriael. Just know I'm here for you, if you ever need anything."
He didn't mention the scythe at my side, my obvious twitchy-ness, or my anxious demeanour. Instead he just reached, placing a gauntleted hand on my shoulder. It was one of the things I loved about him. Actions, not words, were Estinien's way. He was letting me know he recognized that right at the moment, I was all kinds of fucked up.
But also that he cared. That he'd be waiting for me when I was good and ready.
I nodding, tearing my eye off him, unable to look at him anymore. Because if I did, I would either cry or try to bite him, I was so hungry.
But it was out of the frying pan, and into the fire, as my eye locked back onto the pilot.
"Take him. He'll do until we get to Drusilla."
My limbs were no longer mine as my gaze locked onto the pilot, standing to my feet clutching my scythe.
"It's been so long since I had a mortal soul that wasn't the rats of Ampador..."
Finally, I would be rid of this hunger.
"Miriael?" Estinien asked with concern as I lowered my scythe, my thoughts only of teeth in flesh, the muscle memory of the soul crystal raising my scythe up, higher and higher, the pilot none-the-wiser as he stared ahead.
"Just a little taste... He wouldn't miss an arm... Would he?"
"Miriael!"
"No... better the whole of him."
I felt her slowly escape from my flesh, manifesting solidifying darkness over my shoulder, her claws reaching upwards and outwards to match the curve of my scythe... Ready to catch whatever I maimed.
This is how we feed.
"MIRIAEL, NO!"
The pilot finally turned around just as I began to bring the scythe down in a perfect cut, it's grim harvest all but certain to slice him open from shoulder to hip.
Only for the scythe to clang against a blood stained spear, bouncing harmlessly backwards to save the poor pilot's life, his face twisted up in a silent scream of terror.
Both Vata's and my head snapped towards the spear's holder, only to be grabbed by the snuff of the neck pulling us away from our destined meal, as an angry nearly seven foot tall dragoon stood inbetween me and the hopeless pilot.
My practised eye examined the dragoon for threat, as Vata growled over my shoulder, swirling in a silent void of darkness, one of her claws creeping protectively around my shoulder. It would be a tough fight. But I knew his moves probably better than he did.
I, was the Blood dragoon after all.
"Miriael... I don't want to do this. I know you're in there. Fight it." The dragoon pleaded with me.
"Don't listen to him. He's so much weaker than you. Let me devour him, and then not only will our hunger be satisfied... We can be stronger still."
Hefting the scythe to hang loosely behind me, I arched out my hand to counter balance, the perfect combat stance for such closed quarters, my eye locking on my enemy-
"Miri. Please."
The dragoon's cry pierced my ears, that hopeful broken voice rushing forth a memory from the depths of my mind. A cold campfire among the cloud filled skies above Dravania... Talking about the possibility of peace, an end to the Dragonsong war... with Ysayle, Alphinaud, and...
"Estinien?" I said quietly, almost unsure that I was looking into the readied stance of my friend, his spear pointed at my heart.
"There you are." He whispered, his voice just barely breaking on the last syllable.
I dropped my scythe to the deck of the airship, as Vata grumbled back into my skin, her shadow wreathed form covered in grey wrappings fading into first mist that then seemed to seep into me.
I all but collapsed forward as Estinien caught me one armed, his other hand still grasping his spear.
"Oh my gods, Estinien, I'm so sorry-I nearly, Estinien I'm so so sorry-" I began to babble as the tears finally came, the grief filled sobs of what I'd done, and what I'd nearly done finally coming due through my emotions.
Estinien said nothing as we lowered slowly to the deck, my fists clenched against his breastplate as he gently placed his spear on the floor to wrap both armoured arms around me,
"I nearly killed him, and hurt you, and oh gods I'm so sorry" I stuttered out inbetween sobs as I kneeled against him, my tears falling freely from my one good eye, snot blubbering in my gasps as I rested my head against him.
Yet still he said nothing.
He will never forgive me.
Vata was silent. One half of her mind a storm of trying to surpress the hunger in my soul, the other clearly upset that we'd apparently done something bad that she didn't understand.
And now all there was... Was the broken Hero of Eorzea, sobbing against one of her oldest friend's armour after she nearly killed him.
He will never ever forgive me. I've become the very thing I hate.
"Miriael." Estinien whispered into my ear.
I quieted my sobbing just enough to nod against his armour, my hands worming their way around his waist to clutch at his back plate.
"You're okay. I'm sorry. Whatever this is. We'll find a way to help."
I didn't know if they could. I hoped so. Gods did I ever hope so.
Yet despite the fact that I'd just nearly tried to kill my friend, the Black Shroud passed under us, as one terrified pilot carried us ever closer to Ul'dah.

My project to create “secondary subclasses” as class-specific organisations, separate from and in addition to subclasses is underway. First up:
Artificer Guild
You are affiliated with a group that offers a feature at 1st, 6th, and 13th level. In addition, each group has an optional boon that they can earn at 20th level at the DM’s discretion. You can join one of the following artificer guilds of your choice as your group: Collectors, Defenders, or Inventors.
Collectors
Your organization exists to unearth lost arcana and explore the world to find old and forgotten magic items. Your guild will help you uncover information about magical effects, items, creatures, and spells.
Academic Expertise (1st Level). Choose Arcana or History. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses the chosen proficiency. If you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild, you can change this proficiency out for the other.
Magical Secret (6th Level). Choose one spell from any class. The spell you choose must be of a level you can cast, as shown on the Artificer table, or a cantrip. The chosen spell counts as an artificer spell for you, you always have it prepared, and it doesn’t count against the number of artificer spells you can prepare. If you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild, you can replace this spell with a different one.
Lost Knowledge (13th Level). You can cast the legend lore spell once without expending a spell slot or any material components. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild.
Locate Magic Item (Boon). You can cast locate object at will. When you cast the spell in this way, you can only use it to find the nearest magic item you aren’t already aware of.
Defenders
Your guild is devoted to protecting the world from magical threats and destroying dangerous objects. Maintaining relations with nobles, mages, and researchers, this guild allows you to gain an audience with people in positions of power that might otherwise dismiss you.
Diplomat’s Expertise (1st Level). Choose Insight or Persuasion. Your proficiency bonus is doubled for any ability check you make that uses the chosen proficiency. If you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild, you can change this proficiency out for the other.
Lens of Magic Scrutiny (6th Level). You learn a new infusion. It doesn’t count against your number of infusions known.
Prerequisite: 6th-level artificer, defenders guild Item: A magnifying glass While holding this object, a creature can use an action to inspect an object it can see within 5 feet. When a creature inspects an object in this way, the creature learns if a spell is affecting the object (and what school such a spell belongs to), if it is a magic item, and whether or not it is cursed. This object can also be used as a substitute for the normal material component for the identify spell.
Dispel Danger (13th Level). You can cast dispel evil and good, dispel magic, or remove curse as a 9th-level spell. Once you use this feature to cast a spell, you can’t use it again until you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild.
Relic Destroyer (Boon). When you identify an artifact or use your Lens of Magic Scrutiny to inspect an artifact, you learn how the artifact can be destroyed.
Inventors
Inventors work to create new technologies. Your guild has access to state-of-the-art inventions, which you and your companions may potentially borrow. These inventions could be anything from tiny clockwork toys to flying airships, as appropriate to the setting and determined by the DM.
Frontier of Innovation (1st Level). You gain proficiency with one additional set of artisan’s tools of your choice. If you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild, you can change this proficiency out for one with a different set of artisan’s tools.
Extra Infusion (6th Level). You learn one additional infusion of your choice. It doesn’t count against you number of infusions known.
Object Simulacrum (13th Level). As an action, you can touch a non-magical object and imbue it with the powers of a magic item you are touching. The object must resemble the magic item in size, shape, and material. The item can’t be a potion, a scroll, a sentient magic item, or an artifact. The object becomes a perfect copy of the magic item for the next two hours. Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you spend at least 7 days of downtime with your artificer guild.
Magic Invention (Boon). You create a very rare magic item of your choice. If the item is destroyed, you can spend 8 hours recreating it.

Author’s Note: I hacked off 1.7k words to post as the previous chapter, and this one still ended up being over 5k in length. And it probably could have ended up longer, but I need to reserve some word count for the remainder of what I had initially planned.
Also, though I’ve listed a lot of side ships, none get that much screen time, so anyone looking forward to a lot of their favorites may be disappointed. However, anyone with a distaste for X ship can avoid this work if they do so desire.
Summary: Yohane leads her troops into battle to defend their empire
---------
“Long live the empire!” The troops called a second time.
Yoshiko smiled broadly before shifting her shoulders to summon her wings. Like all of the powers Yoshiko had gained from the Paragon, she had spent years refining them to her own personal preferences. Thus, in the case of her ability to fly, she had molded the original, cape-like wisps into a pair of majestic, black angel wings.
Next, Yoshiko forged the dark energies within her into her favored weapon, a sizable scythe. She then spun it in a grandiose display and finished with a dramatic pose. Riko smiled as the act drew its intended result, more loud cheers from the men and woman standing ready to follow their glorious leader into battle.
“Alright, Prelude, let’s get ready as well.” Riko said to her companion.
“Aye ma’am.” The dog replied in a slightly tinny voice.
Prelude then began to transform, growing in size as her parts unfolded from the pocket dimension stored within her core. Once it was big enough, Riko stepped into the pilot compartment and began her usual routine of checking her controls and making any necessary adjustments. By the time all of Prelude’s parts and armaments had unpacked, she stood nearly twice her master’s height. Finally, Riko turned and…
“What?” She asked, looking down.
Yoshiko grinned back up at her. “I don’t think I’ll ever tire of watching that.”
“Oh…”
The sound of an explosion followed by an excited cheer caught everyone’s attention.
“Oh, come on!” Yoshiko whined. “How the heck did they beat us?” She waved a hand as though nobody else could see several dozen dragons engaging in battle. An enemy destroyer was already engulfed in flames and slowly losing altitude.
“Either they were a lot closer than we thought or they’ve managed to boost the Jardin de Verre’s speed with some new spell.” Riko speculated, trying not to be embarrassed on her emperor’s behalf at the childish outburst.
“Your guess is pretty close on the latter, Riko-chan.” A voice sounded through the device in Riko’s ear, one she recognized as belonging to Grand Arcane Knight Tojo Nozomi. “But it isn’t so much of a new spell, rather that I’ve refined it to work better with the engines.”
“Wha, our comms are connected already?” Yoshiko startled.
“So it would seem.” Nozomi replied. “Welcome to the battle, fleet of the Datenshi.”
Riko scanned the area for a moment before spotting the Jardin de Verre. The billowed sails of the three masts made the wooden warship look like it was better suited to be on the surface than in the air, but she knew powerful spells kept it in the skies. Its appearance stood in contrast to the mostly steel-clad airships of the Datenshi fleet that were borne aloft by the combined might of steam and alchemy.
“Yeah, c’mon out and join the fun, Yoshiko-chan!” Dragon Knight Commander Kousaka Honoka’s voice came over the communication device.
“Come play, Yoshiko-chan! Come play! Nya!” Dragon Knight 1st Class Hoshizora Rin cheered along.
“It’s Yohane!” Yoshiko snapped. “Emperor Yohane to you two, Honoka, Rin!”
Honoka merely laughed in response.
“Honoka…” Dragon Commander Sonoda Umi sighed through the connection. “You really should try to show more respect, especially for the leaders of other nations.”
“Sorry, sorry.” Honoka didn’t sound the least bit apologetic. “I’ll do better, next time, Emperor Yohane-chan.”
Rin giggled.
“The same goes for you, Rin.” Umi added.
Yoshiko looked like she was about to respond, but instead, she flipped off her comm and turned to her troops. “Little Demons!” she shouted. “Heaven or Hell!” She pointed her scythe toward the enemy fleet. “Round One!”
“Let’s Rock!” The battalion called in response.
With that, several hundred troops launched into battle. Many wore mechanized suits meant for close quarters combat, like Riko, while the rest piloted aircrafts of various sizes and shapes with armaments meant for midrange combat.
As she flew toward the engagement zone, Riko glanced back at the larger ships of her fleet. They were arranged in a sizable, three-dimensional grid that would allow them to provide artillery support as well as an intimidating blockade. At least she hoped it would be intimidating.
The Imperial Shinmizu Navy Flagship Datenshi and the airborne battalion it carried were a force to be reckoned with on their own, easily able to defeat an enemy carrier one on one, or even one accompanied by a small vanguard. However, as Riko had mentioned in the strategy meeting a little while back, this was by far the biggest fleet with which they had ever engaged.
How far is You-chan? Riko found herself wondering as she continued to look back. She flipped a switch that brought a lens into her view before turning a dial that adjusted the magnification. Ah, there she is. Still a good twenty minutes or so out. But she should be able to start providing artillery support in half that, less if she’s careful with her calculations.
Another whine of frustration from Yoshiko pulled Riko’s attention back to situation at hand. Between them and the enemy fleet, a dozen or so figures blinked into existence. Yuki’s Firestorm Chasers had arrived on the scene. The sky warriors were clad in nigh form fitting armor suits that were far smaller than the bulky mech devices worn by Riko and her troops.
“Sometimes I wish we had stuff like that.” Yoshiko said, holding a hand over her comm so that only Riko next to her could hear.
Riko slid her own comm away as well before replying. “You know the URS developed their Rapid Dimensional Deployment packs by reverse engineering technology stolen from the enemy, right?” To say nothing of the fact that the one-time use devices are extremely expensive. She added silently to herself as she watched Setsuna’s squad eject their spent packs from their backs and let them fall into the sea below. We definitely owe them a debt of gratitude.
“Yeah, I know… But still, maybe Zuramaru and her team can figure out something similar that doesn’t rely on using enemy tech.”
“Maybe.”
Riko pondered for a moment about just how far the empire could push their alchemic and artifice progress. As much of a genius as Hanamaru was, she seemed to sometimes struggle with more advanced technology, the likes of which Rina, with the URS seemed to excel at creating. Of course, there was also the longstanding belief within the empire that adapting the enemy technology risked becoming like the enemy.
This idea was one Yoshiko had personally struggled with, having been directly afflicted by the Paragon. However, after years of fighting on the front lines, using everything she had against the enemy, Yoshiko had eventually managed to earn the respect of her people and became the adored leader she was today.
Also, this more careful and calculated approach to technology wasn’t to say the Shinmizu Empire was less powerful than the United Rainbow States when it came to military might. Just as the Μνήμη Kingdom maintained their own strength despite focusing nearly exclusively on arcane power. Each of the three sister nations had their own strengths and weaknesses, and cooperation against the Paragon had become their best strategy for survival.
“Emperor Yohane-sama, Grand Admiral Sakurauchi-san.” Setsuna suddenly swooped in beside the pair. “My Chasers and I are at your command.” She offered a brilliant smile before glancing upward, aiming and launching a stream of concentrated flame. “That’s one, Ai-san!” She called over her comm as flaming debris from the drone she had destroyed fell around her.
“Ha! Nice, Setsu!” The second in command of the Chasers replied. “But Ai-san has already gotten three, and Honoka has downed one of the destroyers, so you’ve got some catching up to do.”
“Right!” Setsuna replied, before returning her attention to the two beside her. “Anything special we should know?”
Yoshiko shook her head. “Just the usual: destroy them all. Let none escape. And definitely do not let them take back anything of ours.”
Setsuna nodded.
“Dia has anti-air support prepared should anything stray too close, but we’d like to keep things contained here.”
“Roger!”
“Is that a new suit, Yuki-san?” Riko inquired.
Setsuna’s smile grew. “You noticed? Yeah, Rina-san’s been hard at work. Oh, and watch!” She suddenly shot forward, directly into the middle of an approaching swarm of Paragon sky troopers. “Setsuna Scarlet Storm!” The Brigadier General shouted as she unleashed what looked like an explosion of red plasma that obliterated the enemies around her.
“Wow, Setsu, how many was that?” Ai asked.
“Uhm…” Setsuna pursed her lips as she realized she hadn’t counted.
“Seven.” Phobetor’s voice sounded from everywhere and nowhere before he manifested by his master’s side in his huge battle form.
“Ah, thanks, Phobetor-san!”
“You’re not the only one with new tricks!” Yoshiko declared, holding out a closed fist.
A sphere of dark energy coalesced among another group of Paragon. Yoshiko splayed out her fingers, which commanded tendrils to shoot out from the ball and wrap themselves around the enemies. Then when Yoshiko closed her fist again, the tendrils drew the enemies together. Finally, she teleported the short distance to the group, and with a single slash from her scythe, cleaved through them all. The dark energy dissipated and the defeated foes dropped from the sky.
“That’s. So. Cool!” Setsuna practically squealed with delight. “And I’ll always love how you leave a decoy of yourself when you teleport. Makes me wish our RDD packs did the same… and that we could use them more than once.”
Riko decided not to point out that Yoshiko had just been jealous of the RDD packs seemingly nigh infinite range that allowed deployment anywhere around the globe. As opposed to Yoshiko’s ability with a range measurable in meters, making it usable mainly as a defensive skill in close quarter combat, but could be used as often as she desired. Tradeoffs, she supposed.
“Are we showing off new skills?” Ai called, loud enough that the others didn’t need the comm to hear her. “Then get a load of what my Rinari made for me!” With that, she gathered a large, orange ball of plasma in her hand before spiking it like a volleyball toward a group of enemies. As it moved, the ball expanded and took the shape of a heart before exploding. “Ai’m killing them with love!” Ai declared before bursting into laughter. “And it’s all thanks to Rinari, she really is the best armorsmith there is.”
“I am afraid I must humbly disagree with that.” Umi stated calmly as she gracefully guided her dragon, Tempest, through a series of maneuvers that one could be forgiven in assuming were choreographed via some sort of short-range precognition. The absolute precision of Tempest’s lightning breath strikes and Umi’s acid arrows did little to dissuade such beliefs.
“Yeah, but you’re just biased.” Ai returned.
“So are you.” Yoshiko pointed out.
“Yup, Ai-san is absolutely biased! My Rinari will always be my favorite.” Ai conceded proudly. “Oh but, hey Umi, how is the Kotobirb these days anyway?”
“Overworking herself.” Umi replied with a sigh. “As always.”
“Yeah, that sounds like Rinari too.”
“Ruby was just complaining that she hasn’t seen Zuramaru in over a week.” Yoshiko added as she fanned out a dozen black daggers of concentrated energy, her favored form of ranged attack, before sending them flying toward her foes. “She’s been holed up in her lab working on… something.”
“I haven’t seen Tsubasa-chan in almost two weeks…” Honoka whined as she had her dragon, Pandemain, launch an explosive blast into the hull of a nearby destroyer.
Rin immediately had her dragon, Catfish, send a deluge of caustic salt water through the breach, wreaking havoc within the ship.
“You’re still dating that mercenary?” Yoshiko inquired.
“Nope! We’re no longer dating.”
“Oh, I’m sorry…”
“Honoka,” Umi chastised “that’s a horrible way to tell them you’re married now.”
Rin and Ai joined Honoka in laughing at the joke, despite Umi’s distaste for it.
“That might be somewhat our fault, Honoka-san.” Setsuna spoke up. “Yuu-san has been hiring the Pretty Bomberheads for a lot of contracts lately.”
“It’s alright.” Honoka assured. “I know working for Mari-chan makes her happy, even if she wants to start her own merc company someday.”
Riko wondered quietly if the URS contracts were the reason why her own requests to Mari earlier that day had thus far gone unheeded.
“Honoka-chan, Rin-chan.” Nozomi suddenly broke into the conversation. “I’ve got a clear shot at that destroyer if you two can start working on another one.”
“Roger!” The two dragon riders responded before scattering.
No more than half a second later, a massive purple blast of magic slammed into the side of the Paragon airship. Explosions ripped through the deck and blasted the stabilizing fins off one side, causing the craft to list in the other direction. Those close enough could hear an anguished groan emanating from the ship itself, leaving them no doubt of its biological origin.
Riko’s heart ached for a moment as she was again reminded that the airships of the fleet they were fighting were presumed to have been from some other dimension that the Paragon had invaded. Innocent giants of the sky from some foreign version of the planet had been captured, experimented on, augmented with whatever magic or technology the Paragon decided best suited their needs, and finally enslaved and used as warships.
Unfortunately, despite decades of research, nobody in this world had managed to find a way to restore anything afflicted by the Paragon to their former forms. As such, it was generally accepted as a best practice to put them all out of their misery, unless they somehow reveal that they had retained some semblance of sanity or sense of self. Thus far, Yoshiko remained the sole example of an individual who had undergone Paragon experiments and come back from the brink.
“Hey, that gives me an idea.” Yoshiko’s voice brought Riko back to reality. “Riri, Phobetor, help me get close to that cruiser. Datenshi, prepare to fire on my mark.”
“Aye!” Chika responded.
Yoshiko’s daggers and Riko’s lasers began to clear a path toward the cruiser. Those that got too close met a swift end by way of Yoshiko’s scythe, Prelude’s whip sword or Phobetor’s jaws.
“Thanks, Riri.” Yoshiko grinned when they reached the side of the airship. “Be back in a sec.”
“Wait, what?”
Before Riko could react further, Phobetor was gone. A few seconds later, the duplicate Yoshiko had left behind blinked out of existence as well.
Riko pulled down her lens and flipped a switch to change it from magnification mode to x-ray. She quickly located her wife hacking away with her scythe at what she assumed was the engine. Phobetor was engaged with several Paragon crew to keep them away from his master.
“Yousoro!” A voice called across the comm. “Kinjō Tennō,” Yoshiko’s formal honorific was used to address her, though the tone being used indicated it being more teasing than respectful. “ISN Charon requesting permission to fire alongside Admiral Takami and the Datenshi.”
“You-chan you made it!” Chika cheered.
“Permission granted, obviously.” Yoshiko replied, still inside the enemy destroyer. “Just need a little longer…”
“Kinjō Tennō,” Riko found herself using the same title as You had a moment ago “please hurry. The Paragon have realized what you’re doing and are starting to swarm the area.”
“Sorry, Riri, I’ll be back out in a few.”
Riko controlled Prelude’s arm that wielded the hilt of her sword. The sakura petal shaped segments snapped apart at her command. Then, like a conductor with a baton, she began to direct a deadly symphony.
Movement One, Forte, Vivace. The petals swirled around Riko as though she was at the center of a small cyclone.
She had not ceased firing her lasers at more distant targets, but there were only so many she could take on with them. One brave Paragon sky soldier approached within several meters, only to be razored apart by swarming sword segments. Unperturbed by their ally’s demise, three more closed in, only to meet similar fates. Still, more continued to come.
Yocchan… hurry…
“Datenshi, Charon, fire!” Yoshiko ordered, suddenly appearing beside Riko.
“Yousoro!” The two admirals responded in stereo.
“Let’s get out of here, Riri.” Yoshiko grabbed Riko’s hand and teleported.
Right into the middle of the gathering Paragon.
Movement Two, Fortississimo, Prestissimo! Riko’s petals began to glow intensely with pink energy, causing them to leave trails of light behind them, tracing a spherical hurricane around the couple. The Paragon caught within the storm were blitzed out of existence nigh instantaneously. Riko swung her mech’s arm dramatically and the hurricane began to expand, engulfing even more enemies.
“Riri… wow…” Yoshiko murmured.
Explosions behind the pair caught their attention and they turned in time to see a second volley of alchemically enhanced artillery shells find their marks on the cruiser. However, unlike the two destroyers taken down by the Μνήμη crew that slowly fell to the ocean surface, the cruiser suddenly detonated in mid air.
Movement Three, Sforzando… Riko shoved her sword’s hilt forward, sending all of its segments into a concentrated, spinning shield between her and the cruiser. Sostenuto… The petals did well enough to deflect and shred the incoming shrapnel but could do little against the intensely heated pressure wave bearing down on them. Sost…
Suddenly, Yoshiko was in front of Prelude’s cockpit, pressing herself into it. She pulled her wings in like a shell to protect them but winced as the wave buffeted them both. Riko gritted her teeth at her wife’s expression as well as when the smell of burning feathers reached her nose.
“Yocchan…” Riko was unable to maintain her intended formality and reached out to touch Yoshiko’s cheek.
“I’m… fine…” Yoshiko assured, unconvincingly. “Just… give me a sec…”
She snapped her wings out, dislodging the damaged feathers before dismissing her wings entirely. No longer held aloft, Yoshiko clung to the cockpit awkwardly.
“I got you.” Riko pulled Prelude’s offhand around Yoshiko to support her.
Yoshiko took a deep breath, held it for a moment, then shrugged her shoulders to resummon her wings. Finally, she opened her eyes and let out a sigh of relief as her tactic had succeeded in restoring her wings to their former glory.
“Thanks, Riri.” Yoshiko said, leaning in to press a quick kiss against Riko’s forehead. She then pushed away to glide back about half a meter. “Phobetor, wha…?” She asked, noticing something above them.
Riko followed her wife’s gaze up to see the giant cat chewing on what looked like a large fragment of one of the cruiser’s turrets. No, not chewing on, actively consuming.
“I did not wish to let this fall upon you, Master.” Phobetor stated, his voice unimpeded as he continued eating.
“But Riri’s shield…”
“Could not protect against errant scraps coming in at a high-angled arc.”
“Oh…”
“Thank you, Phobetor.” Riko said.
“Of course.” The familiar acknowledged.
“But I thought you preferred to eat the Paragon themselves?” Riko couldn’t help asking. “Not their… equipment?”
The cat seemed to shrug and uttered a decidedly neutral hum as he distended his jaw to finish off the last of the metal. “Fewer resources they can attempt to recover this way.”
“Fair.” Riko conceded.
“Anyway,” Yoshiko seemed to have already regained much of her enthusiasm for battle “a bit of a rough go on the first try, but I think we have a good new strategy here. Only two volleys to take down a Caelum Turpis?” She grinned. “Makes me wonder how much ammo we can save our fleets in dealing with those carriers…”
“Are you two going after one of the flagships?” Setsuna suddenly appeared beside them again.
“That’s my plan.” Yoshiko confirmed.
“The Paragon are going to defend those even fiercer than the cruisers. I’ll help you get there.”
“Thank you, Yuki-san.” Riko said.
“Ai-san is coming too!” Ai dropped in next to her squad commander. “You’re not gonna get ahead of Ai-san in our kill counts that easily, Setsu.”
“We’ll keep taking down the vanguard ships.” Eli’s voice came over the comm. “The Datenshi and her fleet are doing well with their blockade, so we’ll keep skirting the perimeter.”
“Keep finding me good attack angles, Elicchi.” Nozomi chimed in.
“C’mon Rin-chan, let’s tag ourselves a cruiser!” Honoka called.
“Nya!” Rin cheered.
“I’ll cover you.” Umi stated.
“That sounds like a good plan.” Riko confirmed. “Thank you, Jardin de Verre, Pandæmonium Riders.”
“Datenshi, Charon, maintain your barrage on the enemy fleet overall.” Yoshiko ordered. “But be prepared to concentrate fire on the carriers once I disable their engines.”
Chika and You responded in unison again.
“Alright, Riri, Phobetor, Setsuna, Ai, you’re with me.” Yoshiko ordered before beginning her charge toward the first carrier.
The combined might of the five fighters cut a swath through the enemy ranks with ease. They were nearing the limits of Yoshiko’s teleportation range when…
“<Lock On!>” A voice cried through the communication link, using an old language that had fallen out of common use over a century ago, when the world had to come together in order to stand any chance of survival against the Paragon. Thankfully, most still understood the language, and those who didn’t could rely on the translation magic or programing within their comm devices.
From on high, pure white energy radiated down like a sunbeam. A deadly laser pounded down on the carrier, obliterating its bridge in an instant. Nary a second later, the beam punched through the lower hull of the carrier and plunged down into the sea, evaporating a sizable column along the way.
“Damnit, Mari!” Yoshiko shouted, watching in amazement as the carrier careened off course, striking a destroyer, buckling it in half and dragging it down as well. “What the hell kinda entrance is that?!”
“The <Shiny> kind!”
A handful of mech units dropped out of the sky to hover in front of the five other fighters. However, unlike standard Shinmizu mechs, even the elite units of the Little Demons, Mari's were a little bigger, decked out with custom armaments, and painted in decidedly outrageous colors.
“Tsubasa-chan! You’re here!” An excited Honoka called. “Come help us take down some cruisers!”
Mari gave a knowing smile toward her mercenary before jutting a chin in the general direction of the dragon rider flight. Tsubasa gave a thankful nod as she took off toward her wife. Mari then made a shooing motion toward Anju and Erena, encouraging them to follow their friend.
“We don’t have a contract signed.” Yoshiko stated to Mari, sending a fist full of her daggers toward some approaching Paragon.
“<No problem!>” Mari declared with a grin, continuing to punctuate her speech with the old language. “I’ll just put it on your tab.” She winked and fired off a few shots of her own.
Yoshiko furrowed her brow.
“Oh, don’t worry about it, I’ll give you your birthday discount.”
“Birthday? You missed that by almost two weeks.” Yoshiko crossed her arms.
“Oops. <So sorry.>”
“You can give us my birthday discount, Mari-chan.” Chika came over comm. “It’s in a couple days.”
“Sorry, Chikacchi,” Mari shook her head, “but you’re not the one paying the bill. Anyway, Yoshiko, we’ll just call it a belated gift, and we’ll do a percent off per year.”
“Yohane.” Yoshiko corrected. “Emperor Yohane. And I’m twenty five now.”
“Twenty five? When did you get so old?”
Yoshiko raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you older than me?”
“I wasn’t expecting to give that much of a discount… Hrm… Perhaps if I mark it up a bit first…”
“Mari…”
“<It’s joke!>” The mercenary leader dismissed with a wave and a smirk. “You know I’m not going to overcharge my favorite customer! And I could take even more off and have Dia or Kanan owe me a favor.” She waggled her eyebrows. “You know like…”
“Nope.” Yoshiko held out a hand and shook her head. “I don’t wanna hear it.”
“Ohara-san?” Setsuna seemed unable to remain silent any longer as she slid up beside the mercenary leader.
“Yes, Secchan?” Mari turned her attention to the brigadier general.
“That attack was so~ amazing!” Setsuna declared excitedly. “When this battle is over, can I see that new weapon up close? Please?”
“<Of course.>” Mari replied. “In fact, for the right price, I may even sell you the designs so Rina can make some for you guys.”
Setsuna looked like she was about to vibrate out of her suit with excitement at the idea.
“That sounds like a great idea.” Ai chimed in, spiking a ball into the enemy ranks. “I know Rinari would love to look at your designs. And then improve on them.”
“Well, if she succeeds, then I’ll happily buy back the new designs.” Mari said. “In fact, why don’t I include some of our old experimental parts to give her a head start?”
“I’m sure she would appreciate that.”
“So,” Yoshiko grumbled “how much is it gonna cost to have you take out the other two carriers like that?”
“Hrm…” Mari made far too great a show pondering her response. “I’m not sure yet, it might be a little while before the <Miracle> recharges.”
“And how long is a while?”
“Early tests were around thirty minutes for a full charge.”
“Thirty minutes?!” Yoshiko balked, nearly missing a swing of her scythe and only clipping off the flight pack of the Paragon who had managed to close into melee range. “I can take out the cores of the last two quicker than that!”
“Do you have to recharge it completely?” Riko inquired. “That first shot, while effective, seemed like overkill. What about half charge, or even a third? Even if that isn’t enough to destroy it in one shot, it will still do enough damage that our fleets can finish it off.”
“We could try it.” Mari shrugged. “I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Did you hear that Sarah? Let me know when you’ve got a third charge.”
“Roger.” Her ship’s captain replied.
“Anyway,” Yoshiko said, “while we wait then, why don’t we finish what we started with one of the other carriers?” She pointed with her scythe to her intended target. “You wanna come with us, Mari? Yes, I’ll pay.”
“Tut tut.” Mari waggled a finger. “It’s not just Mari, it’s Ultra Admiral of the 1st Super Elite Squadron of the Mega Bomberheads!”
“Yeah, I’m not calling you that.”
“I thought you guys were the Pretty Bomberheads?” Setsuna asked, tilting her head in curiosity.
“Never mind her.” Yoshiko said. “She’s just being her usual annoying self.”
Mari pouted for all of three seconds before laughing.
“Anyway, let’s… Geh?!” Yoshiko barely dodged a massive… tentacle? that shot out of a rift that had somehow appeared unnoticed right next to the group.
“Kyaa!” A voice cried.
“Setsu!” Ai shouted in alarm, backing away from the still expanding rift.
Riko followed Ai’s gaze to the end of the tentacle that was still shoving the brigadier general into the sky. After several frightening seconds, the gigantic appendage stopped, but its victim did not. Setsuna arced powerlessly through the air, shedding shards of her shattered suit along the way.
“I got her!” Yoshiko called, teleporting over to catch the falling woman. “Phobetor, get her to the Datenshi.”
“As you command, Master.” Phobetor appeared beside Yoshiko. “Hang on, Yuki.”
Setsuna groaned an unintelligible response but clenched Phobetor’s fur as he raced toward the flagship.
“What… is… that…” Riko uttered as more tentacles protruded from multiple other rifts across the engagement zone.
No, not tentacles, arms, as they had suckers. But the one that had hit Setsuna was definitely a tentacle… and coming straight towards her!
With a speed that seemed impossible for its size, the tentacle swung through where the group had been fighting, sending everyone scattering, enemy and ally alike. The creature seemed not to care that it caught several Paragon in its path, even striking a nearby destroyer, which was nearly capsized by the blow.
“Five… six…” Mari was counting. “If its like those of our world, where are the others?”
As if in response, two pairs of rifts appeared, one within the Datenshi fleet blockade and the other near the Charon fleet on the surface. Gigantic, sucker covered arms pushed through them and began to lash out at the ships.
“Evasive maneuvers!” Chika’s order could be heard over the comm.
Riko wielded her sword against the tentacle nearest her, but watched as the segments seemed to glance off the augmented skin of the kraken-like monster, dealing negligible damage. She strafed it with her lasers, to an even lesser effect.
“Let’s see how it likes this!” Ai shouted, sending several plasma shots into the tentacle. “A tough one, eh?”
“Don’t let up.” Mari said, adding her own firepower to the concentrated attack. “Look.”
Sure enough, small gashes were just beginning to appear along the surface.
“Let me take a crack at it.” Yoshiko chose an area just above where the others were attacking, swooped in and jammed the toe of her scythe into edge of one of the larger gashes.
An earsplitting roar drowned out the din of battle, causing many combatants to pause in disorientation.
“Woah!” Yoshiko uttered as the tentacle bucked her aside.
A new, larger rift appeared, but this time, a colossal beak pushed out, causing a cacophonic crescendo that Riko could feel vibrating through Prelude. She flinched as the lens she had been using earlier suddenly shattered.
And then, the noise changed. A sharp, staccato snap followed by a strange silence.
“We’re hit!” Eli’s voice called over the communication channel. “I can’t… Nozomi!”
Riko turned toward where she believed the Jardin de Verre to be. Even without her magnification lens, she could see that two of the masts were gone, the sails on the remaining one were in tatters, and there was a gaping hole in the hull.
“I’m taking us down to the surface.” Eli announced. “Nozomi has patched her magicks into the core to maintain some defensive power, but we’re out for now. Honoka, Rin, Umi, keep up the fight while you can. Don’t worry about us.”
Another mounting roar covered the responses from the dragon riders. The giant beak turned toward…
“Hard to starboard!” Chika shouted.
Another staccato snap, and a rippling force crushed across the hull of the Datenshi.
“We’re good.” Chika said. “For now…”
“All ships!” Yoshiko ordered. “Concentrate fire on this thing’s mouth! Fire! Fire everything you’ve got! Fire!”
The roar began yet again and the beak seemed intent on taking out the Imperial flagship again. However, at the last second it shifted.
Riko gasped as searing pain shot through her side. And then, she was falling.
“Riri!” She heard her wife call.
Yoshiko appeared in her field of vision, diving toward her. Was she missing a wing? Riko tried to reach out, but found she couldn’t. Why?
“Riri!”
Riko’s world went dark.

Author’s Note Continued: I’m so sorry, Riko…
And Setsu...
But, spoilers, I guess, but that (?) back up at the top is intentional, and anyone familiar with my other uses of it probably knows why it is there. As always, in a likely over abundance of caution, I used the tag so readers sensitive to such things can avoid this work, though perhaps a story about a war might not be up their alley in the first place.
I dunno, the more I write, and the more I see the tags used by other authors, the more I find myself worrying about such things. I mean, one of my Femslash Friday entries was reblogged with a warning for food, which is one I have personally never thought to use. It has never been, nor will it ever be, my intent to cause distress for any of my readers. I am grateful for the tags other authors have used to allow me to tailor my own reading experience, so I can only hope that I can provide a similar experience to my readers, which may occasionally mean some of my works get filtered out of some searches even though a single chapter within, that has nothing to do with the others, is responsible for the offending tag.
On a different note, while I am using a SIFAS honorifics chart as a general guide for how the characters refer to one another, I am taking some liberties that I hope make sense in the context of this AU. As with the last chapter, I will likely continue to switch back and forth between the use of given and family names as I feel fits best with each situation.

These will be backed up by all of the Italian Naval Troops." - Italy
The effects of this managed to destroy 50 000 Republican troops and a significant amount civilians. However, on their way back, they were all taken out. As for the submarines and destroyers, due to an unexpected mutiny on board, all of these watercraft were destroyed.

Knowing him, I’m sure Inspector Briardien would be most delighted to accept your case and solve such an intriguing mystery for a fellow countryman. Alas, the inspector is still in Thavnair, where he was last sighted with a certain gentleman of light. He did recommended someone who might be equally interested, though Ser Briardien didn’t sound particularly thrilled about this person.
Lady Laniaitte de Haillenarte of the Rose Knights is a practical commander who does not believe in unfounded rumors of the largely peaceful Sea of Clouds. She has even less patience to deal with a certain young lord of another high house, whom she does not reciprocate his one-sided feelings for her. Until the appearance of a mysterious destroyer-class airship that can make the Void Ark a run for its money.
