Hey, I am kind of new to reading Marvel comics but I really want to support Runaways, so I was wondering, what is the best way to do this: should I preorder the digital comics via Amazon? is it best to buy them directly off the Marvel store? apparently there's something like a subscription but I didn't really get how that works, would that be more helpful? I'm lost
Hello! I only recently got back into comics as well so I totally get that it’s a bit confusing but it’s cool that you wanna support Runaways! I hope I can help but feel free to ask any other questions if I’m not totally clear.
So to clear up the subscription stuff, it’s for the single issues that come out monthly. If you got a subscription on Marvel.com then you’d get to read a new issue of Runaways on their site (or through their app) each month. It’s generally seen as the best way to support a series you like.
As for where to buy, Rainbow Rowelldid a really good guide to buying Runaways on her site that’s worth a look: How to read ‘Runaways’ – and how to keep it running. It does a much better job at explaining it then I could do so I’m going to pop the important stuff here:
“Yes, but how do I actually purchase this comic book?”
You actually have a few options here …
1. Pre-order from your local comic book store.
This helps the series the most. It lets comic stores know the book is in demand, so they can order more copies – which keeps a book from being cancelled. You can even set up a “pull file,” which is like an in-store subscription. You can do this right now! Pre-orders can make or break a comic book before it even hits shelves. (Here’s a Vox story that breaks this down more dramatically.) Don’t know your local comic book store? Check this international locator.
2. Buy a digital copy. You can buy and read Runaways online at Marvel.com or on Comixology. Comixology is a good choice if you think you might like to read other digital comics, too.
3. Through the mail.Marvel still sells monthly comics subscriptions! This is a good option if you don’t have a comic book store near you, you hate leaving the house, or you love getting mail. (Or all three!) (It will not surprise you to hear that I used to buy my comics this way.) Subscribe to Runaways through Marvel here. Also, some comic book shops offer pull lists through the mail. Here’s how to order through Midtown Comics in New York City.
4. Wait for the trade paperback.Comic books are collected in five- or six-issue collections that are sold wherever books are sold. I read a lot of comics like this. The downside of this option is that a title can be canceled while you wait for the trade. It’s kind of like expressing support after the fact. THAT SAID, this is a fun way to read comics; it’s how comics get into libraries; and I’ll take your eyeballs anyway I can get them. 💛
So when buying digital it’s probably best to get them straight from Marvel but I don’t think it’ll matter too much if you’re doing it through Amazon (who own Comixology) instead. So long as you’re buying it legally then it’ll be helping!
Personally I subscribe digitally on comixology (just because I already had an amazon account) and buy a physical paperback when they come out from either amazon or my local comic shop so I can have it on my shelf. But there’s nothing wrong with picking up the paperbacks digitally, it just depends on how you like to read your books/comics.
Volume 3 (which has issues 13 - 18 in it) also just came out today in comic shops! It’ll be available online and in other shops on the 23rd so you should definitely pick it up at your preferred source.
Hope that helped a little! Again, feel free to ask anything else if this just turned out to be a confusing wall of text which is very well might be.
