Information About

Writers, it's your turn to shine/see the specific application guidances that apply to writing applications (same thing, really...)

Applications open April 1 (this upcoming Monday)! Of course there is always complete information on our carrd, but if you are curious to see the application guidance for writers here instead, we entreat you to read below the cut!

General Application Guidelines

1. PLEASE tag your content!

The zine will be completely SFW and will not feature ships but we understand some people may wish to submit ship art or content that might be less family-friendly in their portfolios.

All mods are 18+ but we don't want any surprises, so please describe your art in the boxes provided if required!

2. At least ONE of your pieces must be Gravity Falls themed or featuring Gravity Falls characters.

We would particularly like to see your work of Ford, Stan, Mabel, or Dipper as the Pines family is the main focus of this zine!

3. Check your sharing settings!

If sharing a Google Drive folder link for your portfolio, please ensure your folder's sharing settings are set to 'allow anyone with the link to view'. You can test this on an Incognito browser or a browser NOT logged into your Google account to make sure.

Mods will NOT be able to contact every person who makes this mistake to ask them for a new link to their portfolio and it is very likely your application will just be dismissed.

Writer Specific Guidelines

*~*~*~*A note from us mods to you, for transparency: ~*~*~*~*

We won't have space for long fics in the physical zine due to page limitations, but we would like to include more of your work in our digital zine where we will have unlimited space. For the physical zine, a maximum of two pages of writing per writer will be printed, whether it is for the diary entry OR the writing piece. The rest of the pages will be printed in the digital zine if you wish to write more!

Please submit 2-3 pieces that best demonstrate your style of writing.

1. At least one sample should be a minimum of 1,500 words. All three samples combined should not exceed 7k words. (If you would like us to read a particular chapter or extract of one of your fics you should copy that into a word document and put it into a folder in your Google Drive portfolio).

2. Samples should be in English as this is the language the zine will be published in.

It doesn’t matter what kind of English spelling or vocabulary you use (British, American, etc) as long as you are consistent.

3. We will judge samples based on characterisation, grammar, punctuation, flow, and plot.

4. All samples must be entirely written by you. AI generated content is NOT allowed and does not count. Previous zine works are allowed but please ask for permission from your mods to share first! We will not be sharing ANY applicants’ links outside of the GF Seasons Zine Mod Team.

5. NSFW works will NOT be allowed in the zine (this will be a family friendly SFW zine!) but you CAN put them in your portfolio.

If your pieces require trigger warnings, feature ANY ships, or feature NSFW content there WILL be a space for you to write this on your form and we expect you to do so. All moderators are 18+ but we wish to avoid any surprises.

Thank you for your cooperation and understanding (Yep, this was so important we included it twice!)

6. Two types of writing pieces will be featured in this zine- ‘diary entries’ from the perspective of Dipper, Ford, Stan, and Mabel; and ‘normal’ fics.

If you would be interested in contributing a diary entry for characters from the perspective of Stan, Ford, Mabel, or Dipper, please also provide a SHORT extract of how you think a diary entry by them might go!

2023 Fic Recap

This was quite a productive year for my writing! I contributed to multiple zines, continued working on my ongoing stories, and took part in several events. I wrote 157,450 words!

Here is a recap of my writing for the year:

Gen Fic

"Summer Nights and Festival Lights" (PG | 1,200 words): On their trek across the North Blue, Rosinante and Law come across a town having a summer festival.

Written for the One Piece Summer Festival Zine.

"Heartfelt Welcome" (PG | 2,700 words): Jean Bart could see why the young captain was beloved by his men. He’d been on the man’s ship for less than a day and already felt a sense of loyalty toward him—and not just out of gratitude for freeing him. Yes, he was more thankful than he could ever put into words to Trafalgar Law for severing his collar, but it was the kindness and humanity he and his men had shown him since then that truly touched Jean Bart. He was quite aware of how rare such traits were among pirates.

Written for Heart Pirates Week 2023. Day 1 Prompts: Jean Bart and Scars

"Heart With Its Hands Full" (PG | 2,445 words): Shachi barely had time to register the blue dome spreading over him before he found himself face-down in a pile of snow several feet from where he had just been standing. He sat up, sputtering, while Law laughed. Shachi felt his own lips turning upward as he pushed himself to his feet; he liked the sound of Law’s laugh and wanted to hear it more. He was far more familiar with the sound of Law’s whimpers and gasps from nightmares, and if it took being the butt of a joke or two to get the kid to laugh, Shachi could handle that.

"Restless Hearts" (PG | 2,568 words): "When I couldn’t sleep, I decided to come outside and just… see what it felt like. Being safe.”

“And? How does it feel?”

Law shook his head. “I don’t think I’m quite there yet.” He gave Penguin a wry look. “Besides, how safe can you feel when you’re on the way to take on an Emperor?”

It was not lost on Penguin, though, that Law seemed significantly less stressed on the way to Wano than he had before Punk Hazard. That, more than anything, was indicative of how Doflamingo had haunted Law. Still, Penguin hated the thought that Law, after finally putting his demons to rest, didn’t feel any measure of peace. If anyone deserved that, it was Law.

"A New Heart" (PG | 2,933 words): “What’s with those looks? You think I can’t do it because I’m a girl?”

Law rolled his eyes. “I don’t give a shit that you’re a girl,” he said. “I want to know what your angle is.” There was a small twitch in the girl’s eye, and Law knew he was on the right track. “Or maybe, more accurately, what’s your price?”

She glanced between the four of them before settling her eyes on Law. “I want to come with you when you leave.” Law raised an eyebrow. “I don’t want charity or nothing. I’m the best damn mechanic on this island. I’ll be your shipwright.”

"Touch-Starved Heart" (PG | 2,464 words): Law was incredibly touch-starved. He had a limited tolerance for physical contact with other people, and he would remove himself—or someone else’s body parts—with his devil fruit if those limits were breached.

Yet the Hearts were an incredibly affectionate—and tactile—crew. Over the years, it had become something of a competition to see who could touch Law with affection the most frequently or for the longest without being dissected.

Clione first became aware of the competition about two weeks after joining the crew.

"Home Is Where the Hearts Are" (PG | 2,011 words): Law survives Dressrosa and comes home to the Heart Pirates.

"Hearts Adrift" (PG | 3,163 words): Over the years, Law became Bepo’s compass, pointing him in the right direction. Bepo might be the navigator of the Heart Pirates, but Law was his North Star. Standing next to Law as the captain ordered the launching of the Polar Tang, watching their crewmates hustle about doing their duties to put the submarine in motion, had become home, and Bepo finally understood why Zepo had gone out to sea.

And that’s why it was so hard to watch Law’s form grow smaller and smaller as the Polar Tang sailed away from Punk Hazard. For the first time since Bepo had left Zou, he would be sailing without his trusted compass guiding him, his North Star keeping him on track.

"Of Hearts and Broken Trust" (PG | 2,495 words): “I know it’s been tense on here the last few days, and that’s my fault.”

“It’s not—”

“Captain—”

Law raised a hand, cutting off the protests. “I get it. I left, and no one, not even me, knew when, or if, I’d be back. I put my own personal vendetta ahead of all of you, and you have every right to be angry with me.” He looked around the room. “I broke the trust you have in me as your captain, and for that I’m sorry. What we’re going to do in Wano… it’s going to take all of us trusting each other without reservation. So, I know it’s going to take a lot of work, but I intend to earn that trust back. And to start to repair the trust I’ve broken, I have to tell you why I left.”

Written for Heart Pirates Week 2023. Day 8 Prompts: Hakugan and Broken

"Heart Affords a Smile" (PG | 4,757 words): Contrary to popular belief, Trafalgar Law does smile. Sure, he’s more apt to smirk, and he doesn’t smile often or widely, but he does smile.

Or, five times Law smiled and one smile that inspired him.

"Aftermath" (PG | 1,122 words): The aftermath of the fight at Winner Island.

"To Prove Worthy" ( PG-13 | 3,004 words): Drake met Sengoku’s gaze. “I want to become a Marine, like my father.”

“Your father, huh?” Sengoku murmured, his gaze going distant for a moment before he shook himself and focused back on Drake. “That’s a big decision to make, son, especially so soon after what you’ve experienced.”

But Drake was shaking his head before Sengoku finished speaking. “I’ve wanted this for my entire life. I’m more certain now than ever. Please, let me enlist.” Now that he’d started talking, the words wouldn’t stop tumbling out. “I know what my father was at the end, but he was once a good man. A good Marine. Let me honor that legacy.”

Or, after the events of Minion Island, a grieving Sengoku takes in the orphaned Drake.

Written for the Dark Waters One Piece Angst Zine.

"A Fall in the Woods" (PG | 1,497 words): While on their trek through the North Blue, Rosinante trips and sprains his ankle in the middle of the woods. It's a good thing he has a doctor as a companion.

"The Heart Is a Thing to Be Broken" (PG-13 | 5,514 words): The Straw Hats learn about Winner Island.

"Hold Fast to Dreams" (PG | 3,073 words): Law was nine the first time he had a dream that wasn’t his own. He was in a forest on an island he’d never seen before—the plants and trees were the wrong color for one thing—and he was running from an old man he called Gramps, only the man had looked nothing like either of Law’s grandfathers.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 1: Soulmates.

"A Fleeting Moment (When the Sun Can Kiss the Moon)" (PG-13 | 4,356 words): Once upon a time, the Sun fell in love with the Moon.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 2: Sun and Moon.

"The Heart Asks Pleasure - First" (PG-13 | 2,022 words): When Luffy was certain Law was looking at him, he said, “Take my heart.”

“What?” Law asked dumbly. There was no way he’d heard that correctly.

“Take my heart,” Luffy repeated, leaning forward. Though they were still a few feet apart on the balcony, Law suddenly felt like Luffy was looming over him. “And I’ll take yours.”

"Hurricane Heat in My Head" (PG-13 | 2,916 words): Five times Luffy didn't like the way someone was looking at Law and one where he did something about it.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 4: Possessive

"Healing Hands and Healing Hearts" (PG | 1,488 words): Law might be a doctor, but Luffy, Law realized with a sudden flash of clarity, was a healer. Law had put Luffy physically back together after Marineford, but Luffy had put his own soul back together. And, two years later, he’d taken one look at Law’s pain and had extracted the poison from the wound that had been festering in Law’s soul for the last thirteen years.

"My Heart in Your Hands, My Hands around Your Heart" (PG | 1,908 words): In Luffy's lowest moment, Law takes Luffy's hand and promises that his story will not end.

In Law's lowest moment, Luffy takes Law's hand and promises the same.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 6: Hand Holding

"Your Heart, Broken in My Chest" (PG-13 | 3,661 words): Luffy was far from an expert at having someone else’s heart in his chest, but he was pretty sure what was happening with Torao’s heart wasn’t normal.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 8: Hurt/Comfort

"My Heart, Fragile in Your Hands" (PG-13 | 2,380 words): “I failed them,” Law whispered, and it felt like a confession—like at church in Flevance. Confession was supposed to absolve someone of their sins, right? He doubted there was a god anywhere who could absolve him of his. And yet, he confessed at the altar of Luffy. “They were my responsibility, and I failed them.”

Or, Law wakes up in the Sunny's infirmary after Winner Island.

Written for 10 Days of LawLu 2023 Day 9: Reunion.

"Our Hearts, Made Whole in Each Other" (PG-13 | 2,312 words): Luffy cupped Law’s cheek with his hand, softly grazing his thumb over a yellowing bruise. “Torao is so pretty,” he said quietly, a note of awe in his voice. Law flushed. “Torao’s heart is beating so fast.”

“Yeah,” Law agreed, swallowing. “It is.” Luffy’s, despite a few flutters, was beating steadily in Law’s chest. Law, on the other hand, felt pinned to the spot, one hand holding Kikoku and the other in Luffy’s grip.

“You should stay.”

Law blinked. “What?”

“You should stay,” Luffy repeated. “On the Sunny. With me."

"Amid the Falling Snow" (PG-13 | 6,672 words): During a supply stop on the way to Zou, Luffy convinces Law to join him in looking for a local legend. But when their search is interrupted by a blizzard, they're forced to ride out the storm together.

Dark Rise

"Remorse Is Memory Awake" (Will/James, Sarcean/Anharion | PG-13 | 1,740 words): Sloane’s head hadn’t even hit the ground before James was dropping to a knee, Ettore’s sword slipping from his grip. He screwed his eyes shut as image after image flew across his mind’s eye, overwhelming him, entrapping him in a whirlwind of sensation, every sense assaulted at once. He threw his hands over his ears as if he could block out the sudden onslaught, but it made no difference.

He gasped as he realized what he was seeing—not images. Memories.

Multichaptered (Complete)

"To Call Myself Beloved" (Lawlu | PG-13 | 13,202 words): Betrothal Chase: A longstanding courting tradition between pirates in which a pirate who wants to marry another must catch the object of their desire.

Now Pirate King, Luffy declares that his next order of business is getting Law to marry him. Law drunkenly snaps that Luffy will need to catch him first, thus unwittingly setting a Betrothal Chase in motion. While Luffy is all-in, Law is, unsurprisingly, a bit of an idiot.

WIP

"Hearts With(out) Chains" (Dubcon Doflaw, Eventual Lawlu | PG-13 | 24/? | 3,223 words written in 2023): Law is reclaimed by the Family when he’s 17 and, with Doflamingo holding the lives of his crew as collateral for his good behavior, eventually becomes the third Corazon. Years later, trapped by his impossible situation, Law finds a strange connection to Monkey D. Luffy, which offers a glimpse of something he’s repeatedly had ripped away from him: hope.

"(I Made My Mind) A Sunless Space" (Dubcon Doflaw, Eventual Lawlu | R | 13/? | 38,080 words written in 2023): In another life, Minion Island goes a bit differently: a gravely wounded Corazon is recovered by the Marines while Law is taken back into the Family. Years later, Rosinante teams up with Monkey D. Luffy to rescue Law from the clutches of his brother and set him free for good.

"From the Ashes" (Gen | PG-13 | 3/? | 10,811 words): Blackbeard takes Law and the defeated Heart Pirates captive after their defeat at Winner Island.

"The Night Is Darkening Round Me" (Lawlu | R | 5/? | 21,728 words): After Law purchases a house sight unseen, he starts experiencing things he can't explain: footsteps when he's alone, a coffee mug falling from the middle of the counter, flickering lights with no electrical issues. He's a skeptic, but his friends convince him to call in a group of paranormal investigators: the Straw Hat Paranormal Group.

Of course, nothing is ever what it seems, and Law is haunted by more than just spirits in his new house.

Hello everyone! Thank you so much for all of your support throughout the course of this project. A few weeks ago, I (Mod Ren) made our donation to Le Refuge, a grand total of 2,889 Euros, or at the time of conversion, over $3000 USD. Below are the receipts, with my personal information blacked out.

Again, I and the rest of the mod team want to extend our gratitude to everybody who supported us, whether it was contributing your work to the zine, reblogging our posts, or buying our items. It's thanks to everyone's help that we were able to make such a big donation to Le Refuge!

Interest check results + title reveal!

Hello, lovely KaeLumi fans ~

I have the interest check results here! There was a total of 20 responses (it says 21 but someone submitted again due to forgetting to checkmark an additional role -- so charts will be off by 1). That may sound really small, but that was a whole lot more than I expected. I was going to go through with a small scale zine if I got just 10 responses (if at least half were interested in contributing), it was stuck at 6 for awhile, then the last week it just EXPLODED all of a sudden because someone happened to browse the KaeLumi tag and found the IC (thank you for reblogging it, I owe the influx of responses to you!)

Now, without further ado, let's take a look at what we have here!

^ You're all pretty interested, this makes me smile.

^ We got a lot of writers on board, but a good amount of artists too! No MMD artists, so I guess I'll be the only one in that department, lol (and possibly a friend of mine, if she's not busy during production). I write as well so.... you guys are gonna have quite a bit to read haha.

^ This was quite a close split, but overall, having solo illustrations of Kaeya and Lumine as well has won out. We will have at least (1) of each of them! Maybe (2), but due to the close split, we will not have (3).

^ Pretty much everything basically passed but headers. So potential Merch Artists will be able to make anything for the above except headers. I doubt we'll end up with one of everything, but the options are there. Phone wallpapers and Chibi PNGs were most popular!

^ Medium scale won out! But I must say, bold of some of you to select large scale. We probably won't have enough contribution for such a scale, but I like your vision. This will still depend on the amount of contributors we actually get, but we do have enough for small scale and possibly the minimum for medium if some contributors submit more than one piece (don't worry, I've set a piece limit + you have to finish your primary piece as a safety net to make sure you actually get at least one of your ideas done).

^ I guess we're all really starving for content, huh? Haha.

Now, as you know, the zine has been currently untitled, so I asked within the interest check for title ideas as well! I received some lovely suggestions, narrowed it down to two, but this particular title stood out from all the rest. I just thought it sounded perfect. This was submitted anonymously so I cannot say who actually came up with the idea, but whoever you are, thank you -- I love it.

The title of the zine will officially be ----

Frostwind Star!

I just put a background so the words would actually show up against a white background haha. But yes, "Frostwind Star", will now be the official title of our zine! (Made the logo with clipart from Pixabay by OpenClipart-Vectors. Font used is Cougette). Thank you to whoever suggested it, I just thought it sounded really pretty.

Thank you to everyone again for your responses! Again, it was a lot more than I expected. I know it looks like a really low turnout compared to other zines out there, but for me personally, it was a splendid turnout considering how underrated this pairing is. So, I'm just really happy that this little zine can go through! Nobody out there was making one, and none prior seem to exist, so I thought to myself; well, if no one else will do it, I will. No harm trying, right? If it fails, I'll just make a personal zine of them. But it turned out even better than I expected, so thank you ^^

Look forward to contributor apps opening tomorrow! I already have it set up, I'll just be giving it another once over before making it public.

Guidelines + Schedule Update !

Hello Everyone, and happy holidays! We wish you an easy and safe transition into the new year.

Before 2024 truly begins, we want to make an announcement regarding the merch rule mentioned both in our guidelines and our Q&A posts.

I, head mod Oli, would like to apologize for my great oversight on this rule. I take every responsibility for being the one to both create and endorse it in our guidelines/Q&A. After much needed feedback from our audiences, as well as the rest of the mod team, I came to terms with the fact that I was being too overprotective of this zine’s brand, and thus, I ended up hurting the same contributors I aimed to protect.

As of 12/30 and beyond, this rule has been uplifted. Contributors may now have any of their contributions to the zine manufactured, with or without permission, 4 MONTHS after the project’s closing. This update is now reflected in our card.

I want to give a special thanks to the mod team for being able to ease my worries and show me proper sense, as well as you guys for being ever so patient & understanding as we make these changes.

To those of you still interested in applying for Faith & Strength: A Sakura Ogami Fanzine-- we have good news! We will be extending applicationss to 1/27 to give everyone the proper time to acknowledge and adjust to our guidelines change. The links to our apps can be found in our pinned post, as well as in our carrd, linked in our bio.

Thank you to those who read through this post! We’re working hard to make sure our zine’s goals align best with the interests of the Sakura Ogami Fans.

Q&A from the Interest Check!

Hiya! KAJiRA here, hope all my American fans are having a safe and restful Labor Day.

I received many questions from some of y'allz in from the Interest Check (which closed last Wednesday) and I would like to answer them (to the best of my ability ofc).

You can also ask me some questions on this Tumblr page as well if you missed out on the Interest Check form.

Check out the Q&A below:

Q: Just wondering how Miko's parents are going to be interpreted. The whole super-strict Asian parents thing is done to death.

A: Yeah, as stereotypical as it sounds...sadly, the whole tiger parenting in the Asian community is actually true...on some level depending on the parents. However, according to canon Miko actually doesn't show any signs of hatred towards her parents. In Darkness Rising Part 2 (S1E2), Miko told Jack a little bit about her time in Japan where she said she has loving parents. In the episode, Deux Ex Machina, she mentioned to Bulkhead that her parents did want her to go to college, when he was lecturing her for ditching after-school detention. Collecting those tiny information from the show, I would have to suggest that Miko's parents did allow her to have some freedom, yet made room for assertiveness and keeping her grounded when it comes to her academics and future.

Q: Would zine contributors be paid for their pieces?

A: Given that this zine project is still in early development, and I'm the only one fully responsible for it's organization, design, printing on my dime with my own equipment, assembly, and distribution, etc... and also this is just a little passion project I want to do because of my love for TFP and the characters and me being a total sucker for headcanons.

Q: What would the timeline to complete the pieces look like?

A: That is to be determined. With the Interest Check completed, I'm in the process of creating an application form for potential artists and writers. The acceptance letter will include requirements (size, focusing on the theme, etc) and a deadline.

Q: Would artists also be able to contribute to merch designs?

A: Most likely not. Personally, I don't want to make things hard on potential contributors for the merchandise category since merch making can be expensive. Though I am open for artists and fanfic writers, but just wait until applications for contributors opens soon.

K: Same here! Kinda wished TFP sheds more light onto the character's backstory during the series' run. It could've been a few Day-In-The-Life episodes or IDW Publishing could've made some comics focusing on the human characters' backstory. Though we heard a few bits about them (i.e. a little bit about Miko's life in Japan, Jack being raised by a single mom and his dad leaving him at a young age, and Raf's struggles of being noticed in a large family and that his clothes are actually hand-me-downs according to the artbook, Transformers: The Art of Prime), the rest could also be open to interpretation. As for the quality of this project...LOL thanks but not sure how the final product might turn out but there will be more updates soon. I will do the best I can to deliver the best fanzine, and who knows I might promote this project at a future appearance at TFcon!

Here I am again, asking for a little financial help.

Last Sunday, during the torrential rains we had here, we drove through a flooded pothole—which happened to contain a large piece of sheet metal that completely destroyed one of our tires. We took the car in today, but they can’t just replace the one tire, oh no, because the car has some fucked up bullshit where if the tires don’t have an even wear on them it’ll wreck the transmission?! So they have to replace all four tires, which will run us close to $850. Then I guess the universe decided that wasn’t enough, because on the way home from the shop, our other car started to do some wonky shit—it started juddering and a bunch of the indicator lights came on all at once.

We have enough to cover the tire repair, and we can get by with one car until we can afford to get the other fixed. But we’ll be pretty low on money after we pay for the tires. My partner starts a new job next week, but it’ll be a while until he gets his first paycheck. I need to make sure I have money to print copies of my new zine, mail them to the people who preordered a few months back, and get myself and the rest of the copies + my other shit on the train to Midwest Perzine Fest on October 8th. Plus, y’know, bills and stuff.

(gender stuff, fandom-related insecurity/paranoia/self-pity ahead)

People have told me before that it's okay for me to vent here because nobody is being forced to read this crap or follow me, but I still feel like a douche canoe any time I complain here about anything that has to do with my "real life," because I'm so incredibly fortunate and privileged. At least outwardly, my (closest) family has accepted my nb-ness / questioning and I'm overwhelmingly grateful for that. I haven't been disowned, or kicked out of the house, or laughed at... like I said, enormous unearned privilege/good fortune. And ironically, having a few people "in the know" who are still talking to/about me the way they did for 31 years, while frustrating, has genuinely been helping me better understand that I definitely don't identify with my birth-assigned gender or its pronouns anymore, if I ever really did at all. 🤔 It seems to be a matter now of "how long can I continue to pretend the misgendering doesn't bother me when it's coming from my parents," because, lest we forget, I'm still intensely nonconfrontational, afraid of being an inconvenience or a burden to others, terrified of taking up space or standing up for myself, and thoroughly convinced of my own utter worthlessness. 😬

As for the ao3 comment that I have no doubt blown way out of proportion 🤦😣 I'm... I don't know. It has finally taken a backseat in my mind to other concerns, so that's an improvement. But it's going to take a long time to dust myself off from all of this; the comment in question was really just the straw that broke my back after spending the last 2 years having an extremely prolonged existential crisis in regards to my "place" (or lack thereof) in the fandom. I've been feeling really bad/lousy/insecure about my work and my ability to "fit in" or contribute (without also annoying people to death) ever since an incident in the 2020 big bang discord server got under my skin and has just kept on burrowing into my mind and soul like a poisoned splinter ever since.

I don't write fics that are appropriate / desirable / worthy of inclusion in zines or rec lists or what-have-you. I don't know anything about any of the new Trek series or characters or timelines or whatever the hell else because I went and got my ptsd triggered while watching season 1 of Discovery and had to promise myself not to watch anything else produced by the current franchise-runners in the interest of self-preservation. And original series K/S is my only ship, my only fandom interest, the only [hyper-]fixation I've had for at least 6 years now. The harsh fact that I'm simply out of touch and irrelevant has been making me question why I'm even still trying to maintain any kind of online presence at all... and yet my fics and my online friends here have been essentially the only things that have motivated me to keep Living in the last 4+ years. 🤔 So... I'm a mess all over, and not just because of that comment (it clearly didn't help matters any, though). 🤦🤷 (And yet and yet... being a mess is my Thing, like, it's the one thing I'm consistently good at. So although it sucks, I'm also accustomed to it, in a lot of ways. 🙁😬👍)

Thank you, as always, dear, for being my friend and saying such sweet, generous things. I love you (and everybody who has put up with the pain of knowing/interacting with me 💜), and given the especially difficult past few months (both personally and in regards to the state of the US and the world), I'm just really, really grateful to know I'm not alone. 💜🫂💜🫂 Take care, you. 🖖🫂💛💙

Hi! I've never really heard of zines before and tumblr won't let me space this out, so sorry for the text wall + sheer number of questions. What are pitches? Am I locked into creating for the idea/character that I pitch? Can I pitch more than one idea? Writer guidelines mention characterisation, so do I have to submit something with canons? Can there be non-clone background characters for zine works or 100% clones only? Do contributers get a copy of the zine or do we have to pay for it? Thanks!

Hi! No worries, we’re here to help you out :)

First of all, pitches are ideas that applicants have and plan to create for the zine. While not necessary, they give us the best idea of what everyone plans to create so that there aren’t any duplicate ideas. Pitches are in no way finalised; when contributors get invited to the zine, they’ll have the chance to replan their ideas or choose a different one altogether. We’ll have a more in-depth discussion with everyone once the project begins in earnest, but I recommend that everyone have at least an idea in mind of what they plan to create as you may also get invited to the zine for your pitch!

As for the writer guidelines, we realise that clone OCs will have different personalities based on who they are, and so it does not refer to canon characters, but instead refers to how the writer adds life to their OC. Examples of what that means include having a distinct writer’s voice, and personalities that show strongly through the characters’ actions or dialogue.

This zine’s theme is family and individuality. The word “family” doesn’t only refer to blood relationships, but also found family. Therefore, while we do require you to have a clone OC as your main character and be the main focus of your work, background non-clone characters are also welcome.

Finally, contributors will each receive a digital copy of the zine free-of-charge as compensation for the work they’ve done for the zine. The rest of the proceeds will be strictly non-profit, going to charity, and will be available at full-price for non-contributors.

“Yes!” Ladybug punched the air. “We still have ten minutes left!”

Chat Noir landed behind her, barely catching his breath.

“We missed a whole block back there,” he panted.

“We did?”

“Uuugh, we need to go back.” Chat Noir threw his head back as he said it. “I don’t wanna.”

“Wait!” Ladybug had grabbed his tail, right as he had turned around to take a running jump.

Chat Noir looked over his shoulder, giving her a stare that sent goosebumps down her spine. She bit her lip, trying to think of a justification for her decision, but couldn’t find one.

“Let’s stay,” Ladybug resolved to say. The truth was easier anyway. “I don’t care right now. Paris will survive one night we don’t do a full sweep of the city. I wanna rest. With you.”

I had the honor to write a story in art collaboration with the awesome @edendaphne, who made gorgeous artwork depicting a scene from it. Show her some love! Wedding Magic

No one said seeing Luka in a well-tailored tux would make life—and a confession—so much harder than it already was. But alas, there Marinette was, doing her best to not drool on her own sparkly Maid of Honor dress. Just as she let out another wistful sigh, said man tucked a stray hair behind his ear.

Oh yeah, because the handsome suit wasn’t enough, he also had his hair slicked back. For the first time in his life, according to Juleka.

The sigh turned into a noise more akin to a whimper. When did Luka become so handsome? How long had she been away for? How long had she been fantasizing with confessing her feelings for him, that he suddenly seemed ten times more attractive?

“You’re doing it again,” a voice sang next to her.

“I can’t help it,” Marinette whined, turning to Rose. “I’ve never seen him like this before. He looks so good. And the way he’s laughing…” Her eyes turned soft. “I’ve never seen him so happy.”

“He better be,” Rose laughed. “He would be a terrible Best Man if he wasn’t happy for his own sister.”

“That would make him a terrible brother,” Marinette agreed, gaze still locked on those irresistible silky strands that made her want to brush her fingers through it.

“Marinetteeee,” Rose sang again.

The lovestruck woman whimpered once more. “I need a distraction. Yup, that’s what I need.”

Marinette pushed her way through the crowd until finding a waiter carrying glasses of wine. She grabbed one and made a round around the room, stopping to chit-chat with several old classmates.

But in less than ten minutes, she was already back merely three meters away from the Best Man. She watched for a moment, as Luka laughed at something Mylène had said. Marinette let out a resigned sigh, ready to give up and leave it for another time. Yet, just as she was turning, Mylène left her spot, leaving Luka on his own.

This was it. It was the perfect moment. Marinette stood straight, squaring her shoulders, chin up high. A deep breath filled her lungs, giving her the needed confidence to take large strides to him.

“Luka, I—”

Marinette slipped on the skirt of a table, tripping her enough to spill some of her wine on the very man she was calling. Her eyes almost shot out of her eyes, as the shirt and vest of the gorgeous suit became tainted in plum.

“Marinette, are you okay?” Luka asked, his hands holding her elbows.

“Your suit,” she breathed.

“My suit is fine,” he insisted, attempting to catch her gaze, which was focused on his chest. “I’m more worried about you. Do you need anything?”

“I-I…” Marinette sighed in resignation, all confidence gone. “I’m fine. Let me help you with that.”

She lightly pulled on his arm to lead him to the doors next to the bar, into the kitchen. Once inside, Marinette sought out the first aid kit her parents always took to events they catered. Something they had learned to do after one too many accidents that ended with several scrapes on Marinette’s knees.

“I’m not hurt,” Luka said, brows furrowed.

“It’s for the shirt,” Marinette clarified. “I can mix this with dish soap to clean it up.”

She took out a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, along with a teacup, a spoon, and the soap. As she did a small chemistry experiment, her eyes remained focused, refusing to look at the object of her current embarrassment.

“Marinette,” Luka said quietly, lightly touching the hand that was furiously mixing the ingredients, making it stop. “I know I never ask you to tell me what’s wrong, but I can’t help but feel this is about me.”

Her lips pressed together. How is he always so perceptive, she thought. Shoulders slumping, Marinette let go of the spoon.

“I was gonna talk to you about something. But I lost my nerve,” she admitted. “And now I can’t find it again.” The hand that was on the spoon moved to pick up a cloth napkin instead, and dip it in the mixture. “This should help with the shirt.”

When Marinette was about to start scrubbing away the stain, Luka’s hand was back on hers, this time with more strength. As she looked up, she was startled to see how close he was. So close, she could make out the light pink color on his cheeks.

“You know you can trust me with anything, right?” he said, with a husky voice she had never heard come from him.

Hi, would you mind elaborating a little bit on the whole for-profit zine culture and moneytizing tumblr ordeal? This is the first I've ever heard of it and I am much confused. Thank you!

oh boy.

okay. ironically, this was not something i knew much about until the last couple of weeks, either. but man, my eyes have been opened, and i'm so mad about it. i want to go back to not knowing.

it's actually more about monetizing fanfiction than monetizing tumblr. it's already a thing on twitter-- there's a whole culture of fucking weirdos who set fandom events up (zines, big bangs), and then... sell them to fandom at large, i guess? i don't know how else to describe it. the zines, especially, are all for-profit. here's one! what utter tripe.

anyway, this rotating cast of mods is currently running all kind of things like this. it's all ugly! and they're making bank, on their end. in this one, i recognize... one writer? and i don't know if the rest of these writers know what they're contributing to or getting paid, but hey, what do i know, really. good for them, but here's the thing:

the minute you get paid for fanfiction, it becomes very, very illegal. our literal, only protection, as fic writers, is the fact that no one makes any fucking profit from it. we are allowed to exist solely under the domain of fair use. the minute that argument disappears, we lose our protection. it's why AO3 is so intense about their "no ko-fi, no patreon, no commish fic". they're not fucking around; they mean it, because fic writers getting sued was a very real phenomenon until pretty fucking recently. not even twenty years ago. that's a blink, my guy.

so again, gonna put it out there:

First, we appreciate your enthusiasm in trying to help achieve the stretch goals. The stretch goals are beautiful and everyone should be able to get them in their selected bundles!

However, we really want contributors to have their own contributor shop and perks as a huge 'THANK YOU' for contributing the content to the zine. How we have it worked out behind the scenes for the stretch goals is that only the public shop will count towards the goals.

Q: Please tell us about yourself!

A: I'm 29 years old, Navy veteran, and in a polycule with two other people. I dabble in many fandoms. Love writing polycule relationships because I adore the dynamics of them. Want to show that they can work. Souyo and their Shadows can live rent free in my brain for the rest of my life.

Q: Who are your favorite Persona 4 characters and why?

A: My favorite characters are Yu, Yosuke and their Shadows. I just fell in love with them after playing through all the P4 games. Yu and Yosuke just stood out to me. Helps that they were both there since the very beginning of the game. By extension their Shadows gave a lot of insight to how their human counterparts portray themselves. Gives much more depth.

Q: Which Persona 4 characters do you find fun or challenging to write and why?

A: Shadow Yu and Shadow Yosuke are both fun and challenging to write. I’m going off on what I’ve seen in the anime and games to help build the personalities of the Shadows. Shadow Yosuke being a bit possessive of others but cares for those he loves. Shadow Yu being a crybaby at times but can be really sweet. Both can be devious too. On top of that they pull a lot of personality from their human counterparts. They are each other after all.

Q: What are your favorite Persona 4 ships?

A: Souyo, Shadow Souyo, and a fourway between them. I also like Kannao and Yukichie.

Q: Which Arcana do you see yourself as?

A: The Fool. A free spirit (pun intended as a play on my username). Taking risks, traveling, and sometimes being reckless. That’s me.

Q: What's your favorite trope?

A: Friends to lovers mainly. I see a character and their best friend and I eventually ship them.

Q: Do you have a favorite Persona?

A: Izanagi and Jiraiya. Jiraiya has such a cool design with the hero and frog motifs. A well rounded Persona. Izanagi has a cool design too. Absolutely love his coat.

Q: What made you want to become an artist/writer?

A: I used to write stories when I was in middle school. Had a lot of worldbuilding for my own fantasy world. I got into fanfics while I was in the Navy. Now I write regularly as my head fills with tons of ideas all at once. Writing is a great way to exercise my brain. Plus I get to make content to share with others.

Q: How did you get into the Persona series?

A: I was walking around the Navy Exchange and went to the gaming section. I had a PS Vita and I sought a new game to play since I just returned from deployment and needed some kind of entertainment for my downtime. I saw the Persona 4 Dancing All Night game on the shelf. I play rhythm games all the time so I bought it, not knowing what I was getting myself into. I fell in love with the story mode and the music thanks to P4DAN. The characters really stood out to me.

Later on I watched the anime after realizing that there was so much more to Persona than I thought.

Q: What would you like to accomplish with your contribution to AOA zine?

A: I want to proudly show what I have created. Share my passion for my favorite characters. It is also fun to work alongside so many talented artists and writers.
