Happy 61st Birthday Dee Hepburn, born on November 7th, 1961 in Airdrie.
I think most of us will forever remember Dee as “Gregory’s Girl”,the object of desire for John Gordon Sinclair in the 80’s Scottish film, the fact that he ended up with, in my opinion, the far more attractive Claire Grogan in the end pleased me immensely! That’s not say Dee wasn’t lovely, I just had a thing for Wee Claire.
After training in acting and dancing, Dee had a part as a school girl in STV’s production of The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie where she was credited as Dory Hepburn. The role of Dorothy in Bill Forsyth classic. Gregory’s Girl won her the Variety Club actress of the year award in 1981 and it catapulted her into the limelight.
Daee was later reportedly approached to be the female lead opposite Oliver Reed in Castaway, which was played by Amanda Donohoe, and was in line to star in Bolero. When she turned it down, the role went to Bo Derek. The actress said she turned down the chance to become a star because of the level of nudity and sexual content of roles she was offered after Gregory’s Girl.Dee went on to play the part of Isobel in the BBC Scotland drama series Maggie, which centred on the problems of adolescence in the early 80’s.  She admitted to turning down loads of offers saying
"It was amazing how many roles I was offered that involved nudity and sex, and I don’t want to seem as if I’m taking the moral high-ground, but I didn’t want to sell myself in that way.” adding  “ I wouldn’t have wanted to do anything my parents wouldn’t have been proud of.”
Dee also took a stint presenting It’s a Knockout, and took the role of Ann-Marie Wade for three years in the soap opera, Crossroads. She retired from acting after Crossroads closed it’s doors in 1985, to bring up her children, she did however have a small role in the 1996 film ,The Bruce as Mary Bruce, younger sister of Robert the Bruce.
Mum of two, Dee,  now works as a business development manager for a company that makes patient-lifting equipment,  she has no regrets about giving up fame, adding: "I felt I satisfied my curiosity. I enjoyed what I did and I walked away of my own volition, which is the best way."

I guess the bright side is that I don’t have to watch Television anymore. If the kind of shows that cost money, involve special effects, women, the LGBT Community and a diverse cast won’t get made by anyone any more I won’t have to commit to new shows anymore knowing full well that those that end up getting made won’t get an ending and will be cancelled only a few seaons in, so I won’t commit anymore. In the end it will come down to those one or two-season long Event Series with open endings that will be continued somewhere else in their own franchise or never at all and those are already starting to annoy me, so I won’t watch them anymore either at some point in the future I guess, so I will have a lot more free time on my hand to .... I don’t know bemoan the loss of the Golden Age of Television and decide not to watch adaptions of my favorite Novels or Comic Books because they have nothing in common with their source either from the get-go or are doomed from the start to never go anywhere.
So, yeah, I will just not watch anything new anymore, because why should I?

What I'm Watching: Network Sitcom Edition
I have been watching four new network series, the US version of Ghosts, Abbott Elementary, American Auto and Grand Crew. I haven’t yet seen the UK version of Ghosts, and decided to watch the US one based largely on liking leads Rose McIver from iZombie and Utkarsh Ambudkur from The Mindy Project. I was quickly charmed by the series, and I look forward to it weekly, though now that the season finale has past, I’m looking forward.
I remember seeing an advertisement for Abbott Elementary in the summer of 2021, and definitely had the most amusing trailer I saw in the calendar year. This definitely deserves the buzz it has and I’m glad there will be a second season. The first couple of episodes I worried about the cast gelling. Ava’s regular sexual harassment of Gregory was never funny. The first couple of episodes I felt like I was waiting for them to realize how not funny it was. But fortunately that’s mostly dropped (but not forgotten). I’ve needed a new workplace sitcom since Superstore wrapped up.
Speaking of Superstore, it’s creator Justin Spitzer’s new show American Auto. I like the cast, I wanted to like the show, but after the season finale I don’t really care if it comes back. It was surpassingly serialized, which did create a feeling of payoff. But I don’t feel like I just enjoy watching the characters as I do with the other shows.
Finally I also watched all of Grand Crew and really liked it. I want it to be renewed. I liked Echo Kellum and Nicole Byers in supporting roles in other shows I’ve watched and it is great getting to see them as leads. They have wonderful brother/sister chemistry.  I was less familiar with the rest of the cast, but they gelled together quickly. I wang hanging out at a wine bar with them, and I also enjoy the flights of absurdity such as being unable to use a home washing machine as its instructions only come in German, or a father-son bonding via pie throwing.

James Cruden was born 28th December 1915 in Govanhill, Glasgow.
Not a name you will know, but some of you might have known him as Jack Milroy, many more though will be more aware of Jack, as Francie to Rikki Fultons Josie.
As teddy boys Francie and Josie, Fulton and Milroy became comic institutions, igniting their careers, Francie was the naïve and gullible foil to the sardonic Josie (Fulton). Strutting on to the stage dressed in a drab wig and an outrageously tight red “teddy boy” suit, Francie would win laughs before he even opened his mouth. Then, in a heavy Glasgow patois, Francie would react with histrionic horror at Josie’s “carryings-on”.
As a child, he harboured ambitions to become an actor and joined several amateur dramatic societies. During wartime service overseas with the Black Watch, he saw Noel Coward entertain the troops at Chittagong.
On demob in 1947, Milroy got bookings in small theatres, and after being spotted in Carnoustie by a talent scout he was booked for the Tivoli in Aberdeen.
In 1949, he met the singer Mary Lee, who would become his wife in 1953. The two formed a musical and comic double act, performing in Belfast. As a solo act and in pantomime, Milroy packed Scotland’s variety theatres for 50 years. Mary sadly passed away last March at the grand old age of 100.
The double act  of Francie and Josie made the transfer from stage to TV – turning them into Still Game’s Jack and Victor of their day. They went on to rub shoulders with everyone who’s anyone in Scotland — Jack also discovered a 16-year-old Janette Anderson — Wee Jimmy Krankie in the making along the way.
Workaholic Jack had a massive heart attack in the mid-1980s. That was followed by another in the late 90s when he needed to have a pacemaker fitted.  He gave his last ever performance at the Pavilion in the same year, he passed away on February 1st 2001 of heart disease.
I've chosen an auld Hogmanay clip of Jack and his wife Mary

So ummm...who's gonna tell Vox that classic TV isn't the shit anymore either and all of the youngsters are now glued to their phone?
Classic Televion in the way Vox knew it is kinda outdated, unless you count the TV as a device as whole with streaming services etc.
Which also raises an interesting question. The stament "Radio is dead" is more or less true depending on how Alastor would define Radio fot himself. Because when he says "the proper medium to express oneself" im pretty sure he means an audible medium instead of a visual one.
If that's the case, then no, "radio" isn't dead. Who doesn't have a favorite podcast? It's not the same as radio channel but it probably would be much easier to get Alastor to join a modern podcast in comparison to get him to join...a TV show.
Because the actual MEDIUM is still (almsot) the exact same. It's just the way how the medium gets presented (channels vs streaming platforms) is different now.
This applies to TV too.
But yes, TV and Radio is dying in the way that Vox and Alastor knew it...

RIP: Board Game Geek’s Game of Thrones Play-by-Forum
Due to a discussion about setting up an online Game of Thrones Board Game match (h/t @bookworm-blackshoe & @k-simplex ), I dug up the old tools for asynchronous play that everyone used for Board Game Geek Play-by-Forum games. It was a really big and active community; over 500 games were played it looks like, they developed custom maps for easy play, custom variants of the game for balance, and all that. The most successful was the Five Kings and a Prince variant, which had a tweaked map, new house cards, and unique ‘crisis’ cards instead of just wilding attacks over and over:
Tumblr media
I played a few games like 5 years ago or so, but more often what I did was read the games; because it was Play-by-Forum and most had a ‘No Ravens’ rule where all diplomacy had to be done publically, the entire narrative of the game is written out for you. Some roleplay, others chat about their lives as they play, etc. I still remember some of the epic plays or in particular the yelling-at-screen blunders you saw in these games.
Something that is really cool about this is that the ‘meta’ is essentially recorded-over-time through these games. Greyjoy’s overpoweredness is apparent early on; Lannister in particular develop key strategies to mitigate this, like a first turn CP-muster on Lannisport becomes really common. “Openers” like the Greyjoy 4-Castle Riverun play or the Stark Turn-2 Eyrie Snipe become known and named, etc. The history of the game on this forum is preserved at 100% resolution in this way, which is really great.
The forum is dead now of course - the last game, #518, had its last post in March 2022, and it was essentially dead by 2021. I was reading through the last 5KaaP variant game, and its last three turns took over a year to finish as players dropped out and the hunt for replacements got more and more difficult. Everyone knows its the last game of the forum, its the only reason they pushed through - and they finished, in a really close 3-way tie finale (tiebreaker mechanics gave the win to House Baratheon). Very happy they did, it should end that way.
Why the forum died is probably obvious. Its a forum, forums overall are dying slow deaths even if this one had its heyday way later than most. Apparently the Game of Thrones Board Game had a Steam release? I didn’t know that - it has ~50 daily active players, which is not stunning but honestly the forum never had much more than that, its a fine player base and likely cannibalized some of the forum population, even if its primarily synchronous as opposed to asynchronous play. VASSAL as a board game engine exists and has a GoTBG module, maybe it has players?
Bigger culprits are like time itself - we are at the tail end of the Golden Age of Board Games right now, and A Game of Thrones was a pretty early entry into that era. It is an extremely complex game with tons of edge cases and bespoke rules clarifications, it takes 4 hours to play in person, all of that. It is thoroughly modern in its design, for sure, but the past ten years of game design have really pushed towards simpler design philosophies and less demanding playtimes, GOTBG isn’t as much in step with the market now. Additionally, communities like these have ‘anchor’ members - the people who made these mods & tools, people who served as moderators and drummed up players, etc. When a few of them leave the community becomes adrift and fades away faster, and that definitely happened here.
Meanwhile the franchise of a Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire itself has of course declined quite markedly - primarily through the organic passing of time, but less organically through the ritual suicide of the latter half of the televion show and George RR Martin’s tease-and-denial fetish when it comes to his book publishing schedule. I think those intersect too - Game of Thrones fans are nowadays normally older, and the older you are, on average, the less time you have for months-long play-by-forum overly complex board games. Apparently the default mode for the Steam version is for a game to be 6 turns long instead of 10, I think that reflects the changing demo.
Anyway, goodbye to the Board Game Geeks Game of Thrones Play-by-Forum community. May this post serve as a stone in your cairn, and hopefully a reminder of its existence to anyone out there who was also a member and stumbles across it.

Apple TV+ and Windows 10 computer, is screen recording possible?
I want to watch the new Prehistoric Planet which is only available on Apple TV+ but I would like to save the episodes on my computer (for personal use) so I can watch them again and again without having to pay a monthly subscription.
I tried Google and DuckDuckGo but I only found information about how to screen record ‘Apple TV’ (televion manufactured by Apple) and not about the streaming service ‘Apple TV+’ and some stuff about using screen recording on Apple devices.

32. The   Tyler Hoechlin-Superman
Tumblr media
Season 1 of „Supergirl“ ever only saw Kal-El as a child and a stand-in for Superman. We only ever really got to meet him during Season 2. And there he was, the new Televions Version of Superman in all his glory. The Antidote to „Man of Steel“ for anyone, who cared for the character. Tyler Hoechlin’s version was Clark Kent and Superman from the first second on, and he was so sucessful that he ended up getting his own show many struggles later. And no matter what became of this show or how bitter and disappointing everything around it has been, his version of Superman was the version of Superman the world desperateley needed after that movie. And he has been a light in the dark for all of us ever since.
