since people buy and sell plenty of animals that aren't advisable as pets, i'll just ask: what's your opinion on keeping tegus as pets?
Tegus can be kept appropriately, but they're not at all easy! I don't think they're straight-up unethical to keep but they're a very huge commitment I think most people won't be able to meet.
The biggest problem with tegus is their size - these are lizards averaging around 3 feet long, and realistically they need an enclosure the size of a bedroom to really thrive and get the exercise they need. They need a varied diet that can be expensive to maintain, and heating a large enclosure is complex.
If you're 100% committed, and you're sure you can give the animal what they need, then they can be absolutely fine pets. They're personable and very fun to interact with! But they are a massive commitment in terms of space and money.

The argentine black and white tegu lizard is a species that arrived in florida through the exotic pet trade. They are one of the largest lizards in the western hemisphere, achieving a length of 4 feet long, according to the university of florida. Their omnivore diet includes fruits, vegetables, eggs, insects, and small animals.

Tegus are one of the more expensive types of lizards to care for in captivity. This is mostly because of their massive size and large appetite compared to most other common pet lizards. In addition to large enclosures, they require adequate heat and uvb lighting, which can be costly to maintain long-term.

What's your opinion on people having tegus as pets?
They're okay pets if you do it right.
Tegus have a lot of things going for them - they're big but not so large it's unmanageable, their diet is relatively easy to provide (by big lizard standards), and they're hardy and tend to have excellent personalities. Their size and activity level make them very demanding pets, though, and not one you'll do right by if you bring them home on a whim.
Tegus are big lizards - around 3-5 feet long and heavy-bodied - and you're going to need an 8x4x4 enclosure at the absolute bare minimum. They're active and need lots of enrichment and novel things to explore to keep them healthy and happy. Even though their diet isn't hard to get right, it's not cheap; they eat a lot.
They can be good pets if you keep them appropriately, but I've honestly seen more people keeping them poorly than I've seen keeping them well.
If you want a tegu, by all means get one! They have amazing personalities and are so fun to work with. But you have to be prepared to provide for a large, active lizard who will need a lot of your space, time, and money.
