Seriously, who let Jake on my masterlist!? This is for @cherrycola27 Top Gun Taylor challenge!
Tumblr media
There he was. He came to the Hard Deck every Friday night like clockwork. Surrounded by his friends, he made his way through the crowd that had accumulated to shake off the work week and start the weekend. And as always, when his eyes met yours, his lips curved into that signature smile that was never quite as pronounced when he was looking at anyone else.
Your reaction to Hangman was embarrassing. It felt like you were back in your high school cafeteria, trying to discreetly check out one of the football players while sitting at the band geek table. But then there were little interactions here and there that made your heart swell with hope and desire. Almost like something could happen if you let it.
"Hey, darlin'. It's nice to see you," Jake drawled as he approached. He leaned with his forearms on the top of the bar, grinning just for you. That's when you realized you had been wiping up the same few drops of spilled Miller Lite for at least two minutes. You tossed the rag to the side and tried to keep your hands from shaking.
"Hangman. You want your usual?" you asked with a smile of your own, planting your hands on your hips and trying to keep your cool.
The tip of his tongue peeked out of the corner of his mouth as his gaze dipped down to read The Hard Deck across the front of your tank top. It felt like you and he were the only people inside the bar. The way he was always singularly focused on you when he ordered his drinks, lingering a few minutes to chat, had you flushed every time.
"Yeah. My usual." He was smirking at you, eyes so playful, like he knew you were barely functioning at the moment. He favored whiskey sours with Kentucky bourbon and egg whites, and it was actually your favorite cocktail to make. He watched you intently as you got to work, measuring and pouring, constantly in motion, working up a sweat. On the other hand, he was the picture of cool perfection, the king of nonchalance. That's why his warm gaze on your hands while you worked got you so flustered.
"You make 'em that good for everyone else, or just me?" he drawled when you were pouring it into a glass for him.
His gaze was teasing yet sincere. And you had to bite your lip to keep from laughing. "You flirt like this with everyone else, or just me?"
He didn't seem to have a response to that as he looked at you with parted lips and a raised eyebrow. But when you slid the drink across the bar, your fingers met his, and it felt intentional. "Thanks, darlin'." He locked eyes with you, his drink paused halfway to his lips. "It looks good." But he wasn't looking at his cocktail; he was looking at you, his eyes lingering on your lips as you grinned at him.
As soon as he took one sip, you saw a pair of arms wrap around him from behind. At first he looked stunned, but then he seemed to relax when he realized who was touching him.
"Minx, hi," he said, careful not to spill the cocktail as he briefly met your eyes before turning to face a woman so young and pretty, you were immediately filled with dejection.
"Hangman," she crooned in a voice that sounded like it belonged in a bedroom. "I missed you."
He just chuckled. "Just saw you all day at work, Minx."
"Nothing wrong with seeing me outside of work," she told him with a wink.
"You can't get enough of me." Jake's voice and attention seemed to have the same effect on her as they did on you, and your heart felt heavy in your chest as she rested her hand on his abs.
You took a step away from them, eager to find someone else to wait on. "Enjoy your drink," you told Jake with a smile that didn't reach your eyes. He watched you like he wanted to say something, but he did not.
You turned away from him to take another drink order, but soon you saw him playing darts with Minx, and she was laughing hysterically at everything he was saying. You couldn't look away. It was like a five alarm fire, something that held your attention even though it was making you uncomfortable and anxious. She was touching him again now, and you knew you didn't even have the right to feel jealous.
"Can I get another?" You turned to your right to see Rooster setting down his empty beer bottle with a smile.
"Sure," you replied, focusing on him instead. "How's the pool table treating you tonight?"
"Not bad," he replied, and you knew he could tell where you kept glancing. "Seems like you're more interested in darts? Or someone who is playing darts?"
You shrugged and uncapped his beer. "Don't know what you're talking about."
"Mmm," Rooster hummed before taking a sip. "What time do you get off tonight?"
You were a little startled by his question. "In about an hour."
He nodded politely at you. "That's good. I'll still be hanging by the pool table then, just in case you feel like joining me?"
"Oh," you gasped softly. "Well...."
Rooster chuckled. "Nothing makes that man more jealous than when I have something he wants. Just keep that in mind." He rapped on the bartop with his knuckles before smiling at you and strolling back to the pool table like he hadn't a care in the world.
You didn't think it was a good idea to try to make Jake jealous. If he really wanted you, he would have made a move by now, but instead he had Minx hanging off of his arm while he still managed to successfully hit the bullseye nearly every time he threw a dart.
When Jake glanced your way and found that you were already looking at him, you wanted to disappear into thin air. But instead, you quirked one eyebrow and slowly turned away from him. When your shift ended, you'd just thank Rooster for thinking about your feelings, and then head home for the night.
Or at least that was your plan, until you saw Jake try to disentangle himself from Minx, only for her to press her lips to his cheek. You felt the overwhelming need for him to pick you. And as he finally escaped from her and headed back up to the bar, you squared your shoulders.
Jake looked a little flustered this time when he asked you for another whiskey sour. "Sure. And anything for your companion?" you asked as you reached for the bottle of bourbon without missing a beat.
He glanced over his shoulder. "Nah. I only buy drinks for the girls I really like."
You paused with the bourbon in your hand. "And you're not buying her one?"
"Nope," he said casually, leaning a little closer to you while you got the egg whites ready. "Hey, so...what did Rooster want? I saw you and he were chatting a bit."
Your heart skipped along a little faster, your blood running a little hotter as you glanced up at Jake. There were some cracks in the facade now; he only looked like the picture of indifference, because now he seemed a little apprehensive.
"He invited me to hang out with him after my shift ends," you replied with a shrug.
Jake's lips parted, but no sound came out. When you slid his drink to him, he finally asked, "So are you going to? Hang out with Rooster?"
This time you leaned on the bar and eyed him up and down. "Probably. He's cute, and he told me he'd help me get better at pool."
Jake scoffed. "He's not that good at pool," he muttered, and you were immediately rolling your eyes and backing away as Minx kissed him on the cheek again right in front of you.
"Enjoy your drink," you told him as he was dragged away. And you finished your shift with a bit of a bounce in your step, because Jake ignored Minx and kept turning to see where you were.
When you clocked out, you decided to touch up your makeup and fix your hair before breezing right past Jake and heading for the pool table where Rooster was talking to his friends. "You mind if I take you up on that offer?"
Rooster turned around to face you with a grin. "Not one bit," he said, handing you a pool cue and nodding toward the table. "You wanna break, or you want me to?"
You bit your lip, wondering if Jake was watching. "You can. I am actually pretty bad at pool," you said with a laugh.
"No problem. We can teach you a lesson the same time we teach Hangman a lesson," Rooster said, and you watched him send the colorful balls gliding around the table. "I'm solid, you're stripes," he informed you, and when it was your turn to take a shot, Rooster came to stand next to you. "You want me to help you?"
"Yeah," you told him, too afraid to see what Jake and Minx were up to.
"I'm going to touch you. Okay?"
"Okay," you told Rooster, and he was immediately guiding you a few feet to your right with his hands on your hips. "Hey, why are you being nice to me?"
Rooster laughed and bent you at the waist a bit, getting your pool cue into position. "It's fun getting under his skin. And nobody likes Minx." He leaned in a little closer and added, "Also, I expect priority service at the bar from here on out."
"I knew there would be a catch," you mumbled, taking your shot and sinking one of your balls into the corner pocket.
"There's always a catch," Rooster told you, giving you a fist bump and helping you get lined up for your next shot on the other side of the table.
And that's when you spotted Jake, holding darts in his open palm and staring at you with Rooster. He looked concerned and maybe a little hurt, but you forced your focus back to the table and let Bradley place his hands on your arms while he stood behind you.
"He likes you," Rooster muttered with a laugh. "Look at him turning red now. Shit, this is fun."
You couldn't help but laugh, too. "If he really likes me, he better come over here soon."
"He will," Rooster promised, bending you into position again. "Ready for the grand finale?"
"Mmhmm," you hummed, and immediately you felt the prickle of his mustache against your neck. You were about to tell him how much it tickled as he guided your arms through your shot, sinking another ball into the side pocket.
But the plan worked. Before you could say anything to Rooster at all, Jake was storming around the table and slamming the darts down next to the 8 ball.
"What the hell, man?" he asked Rooster, brow creased and cheeks flushed.
"What?" Bradley asked, donning a tone of complete innocence. "We're just playing some pool. RIght?" he asked, turning to you with a smirk.
"That's right," you agreed. "Rooster was helping me with my form. Thanks, Roos."
Jake's eyes narrowed to slits as he positioned himself between the two of you with his hand on your arm. "Can I talk to you for a minute? Alone, please?"
You just shrugged. "Whatever you have to say, you can go ahead and say it here." But now Minx was calling for Jake, and you felt your shoulders slump as you rolled your eyes.
When you started to turn away from Jake, he stroked your arm with his thumb. "Wait, darlin'. Please." He took his hand in yours and led you away from the pool table and to a quieter corner. "What are you doing with Rooster?" he asked softly, green eyes focused on yours.
"What are you doing with Minx?" you managed to ask as he leaned in a little closer to you, linking his fingers with yours.
He laughed softly. "Apparently I'm learning a lesson in just how much I want you."
"Oh," you gasped, bringing your free hand up to his chest. "How much?"
He dragged his thumb gently along your bottom lip, a crooked grin settling on his handsome face. "A whole lot."
And then your eyes fluttered closed and you were kissing him, your fingers sliding up his neck and into his silky hair. You didn't know where Rooster or Minx or anyone else had disappeared to, and you didn't care. Jake was nibbling on your lips before gently slipping his tongue into your mouth. He tasted like bourbon, and you pulled him closer with a sigh.
Then he was smiling against your lips, and Jake trailed kisses along your jaw until he was whispering next to your ear. "Will you let me buy you a drink?"
You laughed, rubbing your thumb in small circles on the back of his neck. "You only buy drinks for the girls you really like."
"Mmhmm. Which is why I'm buying all your drinks from now on, darlin'."
You smirked at him, and led him away from the pool table, giving Rooster a fist bump when you passed him. You barely noticed Minx pouting by the dart board as you turned to Jake and asked, "How about we take a raincheck on you buying me a drink?"
His face fell a little bit, but he nodded and tried to pull his hand out of yours. "Oh, okay."
"I'll take you back to my place instead," you told Jake, pulling on his hand until he was right next to you. You kissed him again, your lips lingering on his. "And I'll make you the whisky sour of your dreams."
He was smiling again and wrapping his arm around your waist. "Lead the way, darlin'."

how you get the girl | jake peralta x fem!reader
summary: 6 months after your breakup, on a rainy night, jake turns up on your doorstep.
warnings: some swearing, kissing, nothing that big of a deal
taglist: @brvceyamada
stand there like a ghost shaking from the rain
you were sat on your couch. all the lights were off and you had a movie playing on the tv while you were curled on the couch and listening to the rain.
it was basically a perfect night.
then there was a knock at your door.
it was late. you checked your phone to see the time, 11:38 pm, and got up with a groan.
why was someone at your door this late at night?
she’ll open up the door and say, ‘are you insane?’
you unlocked the front door and once you pulled it open you found your ex-boyfriend, jake peralta, standing on your porch.
he was soaking wet, his hair sticking to his forehead and his clothes drenched, from the rain.
“jake, what are you doing here?” you asked, taking in his appearance. “it’s the middle of the night and it’s pouring! are you insane?”
say it’s been a long six months
“maybe.” he replied before going quiet again and staring at you. “it’s been… a long six months.”
“really, jake?” you sighed.
you had seen him almost every single day since he broke up with you due to the fact that you worked together.
“are you drunk or something?”
“no! no— i…” he sighed. “i just…”
and you were too afraid to tell her what you want
“i was… afraid.” jake paused. “of telling you the truth.”
“what do you mean?”
“i mean the truth about how i felt about our relationship. i was too scared to tell you what i really wanted.”
“i’m so confused right now.” your eyes flitted around his face.
and that’s how it works
“just… come inside, peralta. it’s raining.” you grabbed him by the sleeve of his leather jacket and pulled him into your house.
“it’s been a while since i’ve been here.” jake said, looking around at the house that hasn’t really changed in the six months since he had dumped you.
that’s how you get the girl
“okay, jake, just… can you please explain what you’re doing here?” you asked. “this is totally random, and i’d like to know what you’re doing and why.”
jake’s mouth went dry and he stopped looking up at the ceiling. his eyes stopped on you.
and then, you say
“okay.” jake took a deep breath. “here it goes.”
“here what goes?” you asked.
i want you for worse or for better
“i want you.” jake paused. “for worse or for better.”
you raised your eyebrows in surprise for a moment before staring at him with a blank look.
i would wait forever and ever
“and, look, i would wait forever and ever.” jake said.
“you’re joking, right?” you asked, one hand still on the handle to your front door. “you can’t possibly be serious.”
broke your heart, i’ll put it back together
“y/n, i know i broke your heart.” jake sighed and looked up from his shoes and took one step closer to you. “but i’ll put it back together.”
you narrowed your eyes at him for two reasons. one, in disbelief, and two, because something about the whole situation was familiar.
i would wait forever and ever
“again, i would wait forever. and ever.” jake mumbled and the two of you stood in your entryway, a few feet away from each other.
“jake, you have got to be kidding me.” you sighed and walked past him and back into the living room, where your movie was now paused on the tv.
and that’s how it works
“what do you mean?” he asked, following you into the room.
“i mean you turning up at my house in the middle of the night talking like a crazy person.”
“a person… crazy in love.” jake said with a wide smile, which he dropped after he saw your disappointed stare. “no? okay.”
that’s how you get the girl
“jake, what is up with you?” you questioned him. “why are you here and why are you saying all this stuff?”
he walked past you and sat down on your couch, still wet.
“off the couch.” you ordered and he got up quickly.
“sorry.” he slowly made his way around the room before stopping in front of a shelf.
remind her how it used to be
he picked up a framed photo off of it and turned to look at you. “you’ve still got these up?”
you shrugged, crossing your arms and holding your robe tight. “yeah.”
“do you remember the day we took this?” he asked.
the picture he held was a selfie he had taken when the two of you were on a date after finishing a big case.
he has caught the exact moment you kissed his cheek.
with pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks
“mhm.” you didn’t want to say much. you didn’t like him being in your house, despite being the one who let him in. “right after we solved the mason murder case you took me out on that date.”
jake chuckled to himself and put the frame down. “yeah.”
the two of you had gone out for dinner, but then abandoned all plans for being in the outside world and decided to watch movies in jake’s apartment.
that same night, he told you that he loved you for the very first time.
tell her how you must’ve lost your mind
jake turned to look at you again.
he didn’t care if you were staring at him with a look that was a mix of both disapproval and disappointment, or that you clearly did not want him to be there.
jake’s eyes travelled from your eyes down your body and back to your face. he thought you looked beautiful.
“y/n, i swear, i must’ve lost my mind.” he forced out a very awkward chuckle, which he masked with a cough. “i did something so stupid, even for me.”
when you left her all alone, and never told her why
“which was?”
“dumping you. and not even telling you why.”
he did that.
six months earlier jake had come up to you at work and asked to talk to you privately.
and that’s how it works
“hey, babe, can i talk to you in private for one second?” jake had appeared at your side mid-conversation with rosa.
“oh, yeah, one sec.” you smiled and he nodded. jake started walking away and you told rosa you’d be right back before following jake.
the two of you soon ended up in the evidence room.
“what’s up?” you asked once the two of you were in the room with the door closed.
jake went silent in front of you. he seemed to freeze up.
“jake? you okay?”
“hmm? oh, yeah, totally, all good.” jake chuckled and cleared his throat. “but, um, anyway. so what i wanted to talk to you about was… i want…”
jake trailed off and stared you in the eyes. you waited for him to go on, giving him a weird look and he shook his head.
“i wanna break up!” jake basically spewed the words out as he yelled them loudly at you. “yup. that’s it. i want to break up… with you…”
jake nodded and turned on his heel, speeding out of the room.
that’s how you lost the girl
“i messed up. big time.”
“really?” you pretended to be surprised. “wow, i had no idea!”
jake stared back blankly. “okay. i get it.”
“do you, jake?” you asked. “because you turning up here and thinking i’d be okay with that tells me that maybe you don’t really get it.”
and now, you say
“no, i do.” he sighed. “i came here because i’ve been thinking. like, really thinking.”
you stared at him expectantly.
“i wanted to apologize.”
“after six months?” you almost laughed. “that’s half a year, jake.”
i want you for worse or for better
“i know.” jake buried his face in his hands. “but i swear, i’ve been thinking about this for… yeah, for literally the entire six months.”
“and what is this thing you’ve been thinking about?”
“i knew i had messed up immediately, and i freaked out and that’s why i ran away.”
you raised your eyebrows. “you messed up so you ran away instead of… talking about it like adults?”
i would wait forever and ever
“well, i did talk about it with charles.” jake said.
“i meant talk about it with me.” you stated. “as in the girl you broke up with without any explanation or another word that wasn’t work related for six months until you show up on her doorstep unannounced in the middle of the night when there’s a storm outside.”
as if on cue, thunder cracked outside.
“okay, keep it down, storm. we’re trying to have a conversation in here.” jake seemed to shout at your ceiling before looking at you with an amused smile.
broke your heart, i’ll put it back together
“okay, look,” he sighed. “i’ll be real with you right now. i want you back. i want us to be together again and i would literally wait forever and ever.”
“so you’ve said.” you nodded slightly, taking acknowledgment of the fact that jake’s hair had dried and had started to curl on top of his head.
not that you were looking at his hair. you were only listening to what he had to say.
you were totally over him.
“jake, i’ve finally… moved on. i’m over it.” you lied. “why did you decide to come here tonight?”
i would wait forever and ever
“because i still love you.” he stated. “and i never stopped loving you because i never wanted to break up in the first place.”
“then why did you break up with me?” you questioned him. “at work of all places, too. for all of our friends to find out immediately? for them to practically baby me for the next month until i finally snapped at them to stop? because that’s what happened.”
“because…”
and that’s how it works
he sighed. “god, why does this have to be so hard?”
“‘god, why does this have to be so hard?’ title of your sex tape.” you said, practically on instinct, before awkwardly coughing at the sight of his smile.
jake didn’t say anything for a moment after that. he just stared at you with that beautifully stupid smile on his stupidly beautiful face.
that’s how you get the girl
“you were saying?”
“right.” jake nodded and cleared his throat. “um… i didn’t want to break up with you. i just freaked out because i couldn’t say what i wanted to say and then started overthinking everything in my head.”
“what were you going to say?” you asked. “you know, before you broke up with me.”
“i was, um… i was gonna suggest that, uh, i…” jake sighed. “i was gonna ask what your thoughts would be on me moving in with you here.”
he gestured around himself to the house the two of you stood in.
and that’s how it works
“i really do love you, y/n. i just… it was just such a big… thing.” jake cursed at himself under his breath. “it was a huge thing and, like, i worried that maybe i was going too fast or that you’d say no and crush my heart so…”
“so you just crushed my heart first to prevent any possible damage to yourself.”
“yup. i’m such an idiot.”
“yeah, you are.”
that’s how you get the girl
“look, i’m sorry for turning up here.” jake apologized and started walking towards the front door again. “i’ll just go and we can pretend none of this happened and go back to not talking to each other.”
“what if i don’t want that.” you spoke and jake turned to look at you.
“what?”
“i mean… it’s raining outside.” nice save. “you don’t want to get sick or anything.”
and you know
“oh, right.” he moved away from the door a little. “smort. i mean, smart thinking, y/n.”
you nodded.
he then looked over at the tv. “die hard?”
you shrugged. “yeah. i was bored and lonely, so…”
“i get it.” he nodded.
“you can, um, watch it with me if you want.” you offered awkwardly. “i mean, it is your favourite movie of all time.”
jake smiled at you. “yeah, okay.”
“then maybe we can talk more about…” you gestured around at him. “this whole thing.”
that i don’t want you to go
the two of you sat down on the couch, but you didn’t put the movie back on. instead the two of you sat quietly.
“what made you decide to come here tonight? i mean, after six whole months?” you asked, breaking the silence.
“i don’t know. i was just in my apartment and listening to music… then i decided i couldn’t deal with us not being together anymore.”
remind me how it used to be
“for months… i don’t know why i didn’t do anything. i guess, i was scared?” he looked at you before laughing. “what am i saying? this is so dumb. whatever.”
“jake…”
“no, i sound ridiculously stupid. i broke up with you.” he rubbed his face. “i shouldn’t be acting like i was the one who was hurt.”
“at least you’re self-aware.” you mumbled before leaning back in your seat.
“y/n…” he reached out and took one of your hands in his. “i’m so sorry. for everything. for dumping you with no explanation, then acting as if nothing happened at all.”
with pictures in frames of kisses on cheeks
“why didn’t you just… explain to me you didn’t really want to break up right after it happened? or at least in the same day?” you asked.
“because… i kind of just assumed this was what you wanted.” jake gestured between the two of you. “you’re way too good for me. i mean, you’re smart, you’re funny, you’re an amazing detective, plus you’re super hot. i just guessed you didn’t really… i mean, look at me.”
“jacob peralta, you are such an idiot sometimes.” you deadpanned and he winced. “but, you do know that you’re also really smart, right? you’re one of the best detectives i know. you’re funny and you’re also super hot.”
“okay, i know you’re trying to make me feel better and this is the worst time to say this, but you feeding my ego and talking in that sexy voice is really turning me on.”
“oh, shut up.”
and say you want me
the silence between you returned for a moment before jake spoke again.
“y/n, i want you back.”
a part of you didn’t want to take him back. he had made you feel terrible for months and quite literally had broken your heart.
but on the other hand…
“jake…” you started and he met your eyes, looking almost desperate.
and then you say
then it clicked in your head. why the things he had been saying seemed to familiar to you.
“oh, my god. jacob peralta you did not.” you hit his arm and he gave you a confused look.
“what?”
i want you for worse or for better
“i want you for worse or for better.” you spoke in a song-like tune and a small smile tugged on jake’s lips.
i would wait forever and ever
“i would wait forever and ever.” you chuckled and shook your head.
the way he smiled at you at that moment made your stomach flip.
broke your heart, i’ll put it back together
“broke your heart, i’ll put it back together.” you glared playfully. “i would wait forever and ever.”
i want you forever and ever
“i want you forever and ever.” jake replaced the line you sang with one later in the song, his face inching closer to yours.
“and that’s how it works, that’s how you get the girl.” you shook your head again in disbelief. “you really followed the steps from the song?”
jake shrugged, your lips almost touching. “did it work?”
“maybe.”
and that’s how it works, that’s how you get the girl
you leaned forward and connected your lips with his.
jake’s hands held onto your hips while your hands ran up his chest and to his shoulders.
when you pulled apart, you smiled curiously and asked him, “when did you plan this, jake?”
“obviously it took months and months of planning to get it perfect.” he said and you gave him a look. “i didn’t plan it, i got the idea, like, five minutes before i left to come here.”
and that’s how it works, that’s how you get the girl
“you came here with no plan except for the lyrics to a taylor swift song?”
“i had faith. she’s a genius, i trusted her.”
you laughed and so did he before connecting your lips in another kiss.
“charles is gonna lose his shit when he hears about this.”
“how would he know if you don’t tell him?” you questioned.
“oh, he has some kind of sixth sense about this stuff.” jake stated.
“what stuff?”
“us. together.”
and that’s how it works, that’s how you get the girl
you paused. “you want us to be together again?”
jake’s mouth was parted slightly and he nodded in the dead silence of the room. “so badly.”
he connected his hand with yours and leaned closer.
“would you give me another chance? please?”
“are you gonna actually communicate with me and tell me how you feel instead of breaking up with me this time?”
jake’s hands held the sides of your face. “i promise. i’ve felt so horrible for the last 6 months and i swear i will never hurt you like that again.”
and that’s how it works, that’s how you get the girl
there was a quiet moment between the two of you.
“so, y/n l/n…” jake took a deep breath. “will you give me another chance and be my girlfriend again?”
and that’s how it works
“jake peralta, you’re one lucky son of a bitch.” you said before quickly adding, “i don’t mean that, i love your mom. she’s really great.”
he chuckled. “don’t worry about it.”
then he leaned forward and kissed you again.

• It was all Boyle's fault. If it wasn't for him, everything would had happen way faster. When you and Peralta meet for the first time, you already working as detective and Jake being a rookie to 99th precint, Boyle shouted something about marriage. It took you years to forget that.
• Jake was a detective with great instincts, it would have been so easy to work with him. Or it would be, if he didn't act like a child. Always bragging, teasing everyone around him, joking about anything that moves. Jake was fun, but was also damn annoying.
• But with time you realized he was more than that. Jake was competent. And never left nobody behind. You could count on him. Not only when you're dealing with dangerous things, but when you need someone to make you laugh on a hard day. Jake will be there, as annoying as he can be, trying his best.
• Falling in love with Jake was unheeded. So slow you didn't even notice. It start with simple things. It started with the way he makes you laugh.
• Jake can make you laugh until you're affraid to piss on your clothes. You being so loud that make other people laugh because of your reaction. But he can also make you chuckle. On these days you're mad at him, or you're in an important meeting, or it is such a bad joke that's embarrasing that you find it funny. And Jake is the best at making you giggle. When you're sad, going through a hard time, and felt like the way of the world is on your shoulders.
• You didn't noticed that you were falling in love, but Jake wasn't so oblivious. He didn't fall in love with you. He walked in love with you. He chose to love you. Jake is immature, and annoying, and childsh and dumb... but he knew what that feeling burning his chest was. Jake just never imagined you could feel the same.
• So time did what it always did: it passes.
• Everything changed when they found out that you were invited to join the Vulture team and didn't know what to do. At first the squad felt betrayed, but then the fear of losing someone important to the team became the most important feeling. Nobody wanted to lose you. Not even Gina.
• For a week, everyone went out of their way to spoil you. You'd fight with them and say it was an important choice and that treats wouldn't help you choose, but that didn't stop them. Boyle cooked your favorite dishes, Terry praised and listened to you, Holt even smiled at you. And Jake, well, Jake became the most competitive person in the world. He was trying to make you realize that no other place would make you as happy as 99th.
• Rosa took you to Shaw's Bar thinking a heart to heart conversation would help, but Jake had other plans. He knew that bar held fond memories, and a little drink would make the nostalgia take root in your heart. He just didn't expect the two of you to end up drunk talking about everything you lived together.
• If without booze you were already competitive, imagine totally drunk. You walked around New York, as loud as possible, betting on everything. About who opened the door first, about what each person on the street would do next, about the result of the football game going on at the time, about which Taylor Swift album would be re-recorded first. And at some point, they decided to see who went the longest without blinking. Jake would blow in your face whenever his eyes stung, but you forced him to keep going until there was a fair winner.
• The drunkness had already destroyed any sense of self-preservation in Jake. All he saw was your constant smile, your cheeks burning, your eyes sparkling. Jake just saw you, without even listening to his conscience. He wasn't afraid, didn't thought he wasn't enough, that you may already had someone else on your heart. Jake didn't think, he just acted. Jake kissed you.
• And you kissed him back.

these dating apps are stupid. where is my academic rival who 3 years later of meeting me, confesses in a love letter, that I'm the fond object of all their desires and the keeper of the key to their heart? where is the lover who builts a fire just to keep me warm? where is the person who secretly reads my favourite books and gets so invested in them just because they observed my bright enthusiasm about them? where is the person who lays in the grass with me to discuss an impromptu script while also talking about our general interests and knows that in the end we're gonna end up with each other? where is the person who gives up the opportunity to have an iPod in exchange of a teapot that contains lil inside jokes we've had going on since years? where is the person who runs to the station just to take me to the place which captures the most enchanting sunrise before i leave the city forever? where is the person who sings their favourite songs with me in a train with a shared earphone? where is the person who saves their dirtiest jokes for me while i save a seat on every table for them? where is the person who after knowing my flaws and fears, says yes to running away with me? where is the person who would come out of Eden to open the door for me if they knew i were there? where is the person who makes me realise that our joy is so bright I cannot see anything beyond it? where's the person who'd choose to hang out with me in every universe? who's going to take me to the lakes where all the poets went to die? where is the bestfriend who looks at me in the eyes and says "this thing we're doing here, me, you- i just want you to know I'm in. I'm all in." and means it!?

What If - Jake "Hangman" Seresin
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Summary : After having an accident, Jake wants to live in the moment even more and take your relationship a step forward, but do you ?
Warnings : Bradshaw!Reader (Reader is Bradley's younger sister by two years), mention of plane accident, mention of deaths (parents and best friend), fear of losing loved ones, proposal, angst, sad ending, implied struggling with mental health, maybe some grammatical mistakes as English is not my first language, tell me if you see some or if I missed any warnings.
Word count : 4.6k
French version
Song inspiration : Champagne Problems by Taylor Swift
You run in the hospital hallways, searching for room 322. Your anxiety increases with every step you take. Your destination seems unreachable. Your eyes are filled with tears but you hold them back. However, the second you walk through the door 322, they run free on your cheeks. Seeing Jake’s body laying down on the bed, hurt, doesn’t help to reduce your stress. Hearing you walking in the room, Jake gives you a big smile as if he didn’t almost die the day before. You get closer to him, examining him a bit more while wiping your cheeks. His left arm is in a sling, his head is bandaged and he has several cuts on his face.
“So, I heard you like bad boys,” Jake starts with a cocky smile, “is this good enough for you?”
“Jake, this is not the time to make jokes. You could have died!” you retort, sitting on the chair next to his bed.
“And I didn’t. I’m here and alive.”
“And hurt.”
“The fact is I’m alive. Thanks to your brother.” he specifies, showing Bradley with his chin.
“At least, we now know who is the best pilot.” your brother jokes.
“In your dreams, Rooster, I just wanted to test your ability to react quickly.”
“You’ll do your pissing contest later, tell me how you’re feeling.” you ask, still panicked.
“I’m fine. I almost don’t feel anything thanks to the meds. Y/N, I am fine, really.” Jake promises you, taking your hand with his right one.
“I’m gonna leave you alone.” Bradley informs you by pressing your shoulder. “Get some rest, Hangman.”
“I’m sorry for worrying you.” Jake says once you’re alone.
“Trust me, it’s not just worrying. I really thought… For a moment, I was sure…” you stutter, a tear rolling down your cheek again.
“I know, I’m sorry. Come here.” he invites you, moving in the best way so you can lie down.
“No, I might hurt you.”
“I don’t care.”
Reluctantly, you get closer to the bed. You think of the best way you could get in bed without hurting him. Jake rolls his eyes before dragging you towards him with his abled arm. You find yourself next to him and you put your head in the crook of his neck, inhaling his natural scent and the hospital.
“Don’t ever do that again. I can’t lose you.” you mutter.
“You won’t lose me. I promise.” Jake affirms, forcing you to look at him. “I love you, Y/N.”
“I love you, Jake.”
You give a small smile then you press your lips against Jake’s. Your kiss isn’t as passionate as it could be, yet it shares all the love you feel.
Once the night comes, you refuse to leave Jake. You literally beg the nurses to let you stay the night. At first, they insist on you leaving, nonetheless when you explain how scared you were to lose your boyfriend and how you can only stay in San Francisco for two days due to your job, they accept. Therefore, you’re currently on the chair in the corner of the room with a thin blanket. Jake wanted you to stay with him on the bed but you said you wouldn’t, you are afraid you might hurt him while sleeping. Your unimportant argument lasted thirty minutes but you stood your ground until the end.
Tired because of his medicines, Jake fell asleep in a few minutes. As for you, you stay awake, watching his chest rise and fall at the rhythm of his breaths. You don’t dare to look away, fearing that by doing so, he might stop respiring.
Notwithstanding, with the hours passing by and with all the emotion you felt, Morpheus comes to embrace you in his arms. At first, your sleep is relaxing though as soon as you start dreaming, your breathing quickens. You see Jake lying on the ground unconscious, you hear your own heart-rending scream when Bradley tells you about an accident, you smell the rain while the coffin sinks in the ground, you touch the tears on your fingers whilst you’re wiping your cheeks and finally, you feel your own heart that seems like it stopped beating in your chest.
You wake up jumping at that last sensation. You calm down your breathing while you stare at Jake, wanting to make sure he’s still alive in his hospital bed. You can’t see his chest moving, you panic then you stand up from the chair and run to him. Jake lightly opens the mouth before closing it several times and then changing position in the bed. Seeing him moving makes you sigh in relief.
Jake is okay. Jake is alive. Jake is not dead. Jake will not die.
No matter how many times you repeat those sentences like a mantra, your anxiety still doesn’t leave your body. Tears threaten to really stream down your face so you discreetly leave the room. Thankfully, the corridor is empty, allowing you to cry your eyes out. You hold back sobs as much as you can. If you sobbed, you would wake Jake up for sure.
You need a moment to calm down your tears. Seeing Jake hurt because of his work in the Navy overwhelmed you so much for several reasons. The first one being because you love Jake and you don’t want to lose him. The second one is because of the buried memories. Your dad died when you were still a baby and Bradley was only two. You don’t have memories of him but you know how much his death affected your mom. The loss of your father isn’t the only one haunting you. You also lost your best friend Lucy. You had been friends with her since you were four years old. You were inseparable until she enlisted in the army and died at twenty.
Receiving Bradley’s call about Jake gave you a glimpse of what your mother and Lucy’s mom went through, a trial you always hoped you’d never face.
Once you're sure you won’t fall apart, you go back in the room. By some miracle, Jake didn’t hear you leaving or entering, probably because of the medicine - normally, he’s a light sleeper. You walk back to the chair and stay awake the whole night, you don’t want to sit through another tragic scenario made by your brain.
The next day, you stay with Jake until the evening. You don’t want to leave him behind in the hospital, however, you have work so you don’t have a choice. Bradley promises you he’ll stay with Jake until his family comes during the week-end and he’ll keep you updated on Jake’s health. You only trust Bradley for this, you know Jake might not tell you everything to not worry you.
When you’re back home, you find your apartment dull. What is supposed to make you feel better can’t comfort you whilst in your mind, you get more lost in your deepest fears. The fact you’re in the process of moving out doesn’t help.
Jake and you are supposed to get a small house together. You should have the keys in two weeks, his deployment was supposed to be over by then. A few days ago, you were still looking forward to leaving your apartment and living with the man you love and now, you don’t know anymore.
Your relationship has always been exceptional, not only because he’s a good man but also considering that, before him, you wouldn’t allow yourself to date an army man. You always knew your mother as a half empty shell so you always wanted to protect yourself from the same deadly fate and the loss of Lucy didn’t help either. You’re already worried about losing your brother and Maverick, whom you consider as your uncle, you don’t want to risk losing your partner, too. Therefore, you had always refused to fall in love with a man like this. Before, you could do it until Jake appeared in your life; just like his personality, his entrance in your life was loud. You tried to resist it but your heart didn’t give you a choice so, for the first time, you broke your own rule. Your relationship with Jake is the most beautiful one you’ve ever had and you have no regrets about it. You used to have no regrets about it. His accident was a good reminder of how dangerous his job is.
Until you came home, you tried to shut down your fears and your doubts though, now, in your half-empty apartment, you can’t ignore it anymore. That night, you can’t sleep, your mind too busy to torture you.
Unfortunately for you, your mind doesn't give you one second of peace. The following days, you doubt your whole relationship with Jake, imagining the worst case scenarios in which he’d die during several milestones : your first house together, your wedding, pregnancies, anniversaries. The list never seems to end. You can’t be optimistic about it. You’re completely lost in your worries to the point where you end up living like a robot. You’re making yourself sick while anticipating the worst.
Your downward spiral is interrupted a week later by a knock on your door one morning. At first, you ignore the noise, comfortably staying in your discontent. However, when the person insists, you leave your bed and open them, not without sighing, annoyed. You’re about to tell the person to leave but the presence of Jake stops you. He wasn’t supposed to come back to San Diego right now and yet, here he is, in front of you, a big smile on his face and his left arm still in the sling and his wounds on his face starting to fade.
“Jake? What are you doing here? You still need to rest!”
“I know, I wanted to see you though and I couldn’t wait so I took the night train at the last minute. Can I come in?” Jake asks and  you let him in, still surprised.
“Why didn’t you call me? I could have come during the weekend.”
“I wanted to surprise you. You’re okay ? You look under the weather.” he observes, stroking your cheek.
“I should ask you this, you’re the one who almost died not even a week ago.” you answer, taking his hand in yours.
“I’m better, Y/N. Even Bradley told you so. The recovery is gonna be long but I’ll be okay.”
“I’ll believe it when I see it.”
“I love when you go all mother hen. It’s cute.” he says, kissing your cheek and you let go of a laugh.
“You’re an idiot. Let’s go to the living room.” you invite him, starting to walk. “Do you want something to drink?”
“No. I just want to talk to you.” Jake informs you.
“About what?”
You frown when he prevents you from sitting on your couch. He slowly strokes your hand before taking a deep breath.
“Look, you know I always try to enjoy the present and with this accident, it really made me realise how precious what we currently have is. I don’t want to waste any seconds, I want to enjoy every moment with you. There is something I’ve been meaning to tell you for a moment now but I would keep telling myself it might be too early so I always pushed it back then I talked about it with my mom and she convinced me to jump in with both feet.”
“Jake, what do you mean?” you question, stress twisting your stomach.
“Y/N,” Jake resumes, looking deeply in your eyes, “since the second I saw you, I knew you were the woman made for me. I knew you were worth the fight, even if, at first, you wouldn’t pay attention to me. You’re the most intelligent, funny, compassionate and beautiful woman I know. We will have our own house soon and I can’t wait to reach this milestone with you but I’d love for us to reach another one.” he confesses, putting one knee down and your eyes are wide open.
“Jake.”
“Y/N, will you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”
“Wh-what ?” you stutter and Jake nervously laughs.
“Will you marry me?”
“Are you serious?” you question, dropping his hand.
“Huh, yes, I even have the ring.” he specifies, taking out the ring from his pocket, “Though I gotta admit, I think of saying it’s just a joke right now, you’re making me nervous.”
“I’m just surprised. I don’t know what to say.” you defend yourself.
Your eyes are set on Jake’s ring. You’ve seen it before. He’d shown it to you the day you first met his parents a year ago. It’s his great-grand-mother’s ring. It’s simple but you find it beautiful.
“It’s easy, say yes or no.” Jake replies with an anxious smile.
“Jake, we’ve only been together for two years.” you argue and Jake stands up.
“We don’t have to get married next year. We can be engaged for several years. We can wait before calling each other husband and wife, but I have to admit I’d love to, at least, call you my fiancée.”
“Jake, I can’t.” you end up saying.
“What, do you have a first husband in your attic or something?” Jake laughs and you see the panic in his eyes.
“No, I can’t marry you.”
Your sentence sounds like a fatal blow in Jake’s ears. He stays silent, staring at you without understanding what’s going on. He gets a grip on himself when his phone rings in his pocket. Jake knows it’s his mom. She knew he was going to propose today and she is impatient to call you her daughter-in-law. However, it looks like it won’t be the case. Jake opens his mouth several times before managing to utter something:
“What? Why?”
“I… I can’t.”
“But I love you, we love each other. You love me, right?” he asks, doubtful.
“Of course I love you, Jake, more than I ever loved before.” you promise him, making him frown.
“What’s the problem then?”
“I don’t want to marry you.”
If your first refusal already seemed awful to him, the sentence you just said is the final blow. The fact that you don’t want to marry him breaks his heart. He’s lost. It was supposed to be a joyful moment and yet, the ground is falling apart under him.
“What? Did something happen? Did I do something? I… I thought everything was fine between us.”
“It is.”
“Y/N, you have to stop being vague, I don’t understand anything.” he retorts with a strong tone. “What’s going on?”
“You should leave.”
“No, We have to talk about it. You can’t tell me you love me then tell me you don’t want to marry me. Talk to me, Y/N, you have to talk to me. Give me a reason, at least.”
“You wouldn’t understand.” you answer, avoiding his eyes.
“If you explained to me, maybe I’d understand. Are… Are you breaking up with me? Is that why you haven’t been calling me lately?” he questions, desperately searching for an explanation for your behaviour.
“I’ve just been thinking a lot and I think it’s best if we stop right now. I’m sorry, Jake, but I can’t keep being with you. You’ll find someone with whom you’ll share your life with and who will want to marry you.”
“I want it to be you.” he says with a weak tone, tearing up.
“Jake, please.”
“Very well then.” Jake accepts, hurt in his eyes.
Jake turns around and at the rhythm of his steps, your heart breaks whilst you’re looking at him walking to the door. You begged him to leave and yet, you only want to scream at him to come back to you and to hold you in his arms while you apologise. Yet, you stay silent. Jake doesn’t look back when he closes the door.
Once you’re alone, you fall down on your couch. In your head, you convince yourself it’s the best decision. After all, you should feel relieved, now, you don’t have to worry about losing Jake because of his job anymore. Nevertheless, your mind is not calm. You don’t know which way to turn but for different reasons. You wish it was different, it was easier, he had another job, you weren’t afraid. You spend the night crying while removing every trace of Jake in your apartment and unpack some boxes. You have to move on right now before you lose yourself a bit more.
You haven’t talked to Jake for three weeks. He tried to contact you but you ignored every one of his calls. He first wanted to fix your relationship before understanding it was too late, though he wants explanations, explanations you keep for yourself. You don’t want to tell him, you know it’s ridiculous. Why end a relationship given a potential “what if” when everything is fine? However, you also know if you had moved ahead with Jake, you would have ended up sabotaging your relationship. Technically, it’s what you did though at least, you didn’t have to call lawyers to leave his life.
Bradley tried to call you, too, and just like for Jake, you ignored him. Jake probably told him about your break up and Bradley, always being the honourable man, wants to fix the situation. Except the situation can’t be fixed. You don’t want to fix the situation.
When you come back from work that day, you’re surprised to discover your brother at your doorstep. Without thinking, you run in his arms. Sure, you’ve been ignoring him lately but you missed him. The last time you saw each other, you were too focused on Jake to pay attention to him. He holds you in his arms and strokes your back. As soon as you break your embrace, you let Bradley in. You go to your kitchen while talking about banality. Whilst walking, Bradley pays attention to your apartment and notices there isn’t a picture of Jake anymore. Once you’re sitting at the table, you stay silent, waiting for who will be the first to talk about the subject.
“We should talk about the elephant in the room, don’t you think?” Bradley says after a few minutes.
“There’s nothing to say.” you retort, tensed.
“Y/N, you threw away a two years relationship for no reason.”
“I have my reasons.”
“Which are? Jake is probably curious to know them.”
“If you came here to make things better, you’re wasting your time, Brad’.”
“You can’t act like that and expect to not justify yourself. You were happy with Jake, you love him and you broke up without giving a warning. I have to admit when he told me you refused his proposal, I was shocked. I thought you were gonna say yes without hesitating.”
“You knew?”
“He asked me before coming here. I confess, I laugh at him, I didn’t expect him to ask for your hand or give me a heads-up, like he said.” Bradley informs with a smile, thinking back to the memory. “Everything was good between you two, wasn’t it? So why?”
“It’s better like this. He’ll have a wife who knows how to stay and I won’t suffer.”
“Wait, is all of this because of the parents and Lucy?” he questions, understanding the reason. “You’re still with this stupid no-dating-army-guy rule? I thought we were over with it! Y/N, you can’t ruin your life just because you’re scared.”
“I don’t want to end up like mom! You can’t blame me! We were kids but you can’t deny there was a before and an after with mom. She wasn’t laughing like she used to, she wasn’t smiling like she used to. She was the shadow of her former self. I don’t want to go through this if Jake were to die.” you confess.
“It’s because of his accident, isn’t it?”
“It reminded me he could die at any given moment with his work.”
“Just like he could die off-duty. He can have an accident, have a heart attack, choke while eating. You don’t know what will happen in the future. You can’t condemn yourself ‘cause you’re too afraid he might die while flying. It’s ridiculous.” Bradley affirms, resolutely.
“I’m already afraid of losing you and Mav’ and I already lost Lucy and we lost dad, I don’t want Jake to join this list. Can’t you really blame me? I’d rather protect myself by not being afraid everytime my boyfriend goes to work.”
“Let’s imagine the worst were to happen, don’t you think it’d be better to think you spent every second with him? You’d rather live with regrets? You’d rather break your own heart?”
“At least, I know why I’m hurting.”
“Y/N, you have to think about it again.” he sighs. “You have to get out of your head that the worst will happen. You can’t prevent yourself from being happy because of what could happen. You deserve a beautiful life and to be with Jake. I never saw you this happy before and it kills me to see you throw it away because you’re scaring yourself.”
“The problem is I can’t help it,” you start with trembling lips. “I couldn’t stop thinking about it when we first got together then it got better. However, since his accident, it’s been worse. Since your call, I keep imagining what could have happened and what could happen and I’m tired of it, Bradley. I’ll never get rid of it and I hate it but that’s how it is. Believe me, if I could change, I’d do it right now, but I can’t.”
Bradley hugs you as soon as he sees you crying. He holds you against him until your tears stop a few hours later. His heart aches seeing you hurting this much. He knows you’ve always been more affected by your father’s death. Being the youngest, the emptiness you feel about your dad has always been stronger. It got worse with Lucy’s death. That day, Bradley really saw you get broken. He hated every second of this moment of your life. He hates seeing suffering like you currently are. Several times, Bradley tried to help you, he advised you to go see a professional but you’ve always refused. Until now, he had hoped your fears would ease with time, yet, your relationship with Jake just proved him it got worse and he doesn’t know what to do. He’s completely distraught whilst he keeps holding you against him, hoping to give you some kind of comfort.
Two months have passed since your break up. You take it day by day to heal your broken heart. Bradley tries to stay with you as much as he can while Jake isn’t surrounded by anyone. He prefers to wear a mask and pretend your negative answer isn’t hurting him. Nevertheless, the second he’s home alone, his mask falls and he allows himself to feel all his pain. Jake, who has always done it, manages to fool everyone with his fake cocky smile. Almost everyone. Coyote sees right through him.
That night is no exception. Sitting at the counter in the Hard Deck, Jake is drinking his third alcoholic drink. Jake has isolated himself from the rest of the Dagger Squad, saying he’s tired and wanted to be alone. Though, Javy doesn’t let him be in the doldrums. He sits on the stool next to Jake and orders a beer from Penny. Coyote gives him some minutes of peace before speaking.
“Wanna talk about it?”
Coyote doesn’t even need to specify for Jake to understand. Your relationship has been a taboo subject for two months.
“Not really.” Jake says, taking a sip.
“You should.” he replies while Penny hands him his beer. “Do you at least know why she made this decision?”
Jake didn’t tell anyone the reason for your fallout. He feels humiliated enough by your harsh refusal to his proposal, he wants to bury the end of your relationship and never talk about it again. Though Javy is right, Jake knows he has to open up.
“Rooster talked to her. Turns out she doesn’t want to marry me because she’s scared I might die on-duty.”
“Did your accident scare her that much?” Javy questions, taken aback.
“It was the final straw but she’s always been scared apparently. I mean, I suspected it, you know, seeing what we do for a living, it makes sense. She also lost her dad and her best friend in similar circumstances. The problem is I didn’t know those deaths affected her that much. Anyway, there is nothing else to say.”
Coyote doesn't say anything for a moment, taking in the information and the way might have felt when he learned them.
“Well, she would have made such a lovely bride. What a shame she’s fucked in the head.” he says, ignoring what else to say.
“She suffered and she doesn’t want to go through this pain again, we can’t blame her. I’m not saying she should stay lost in her fear, it’s not healthy though, I get why she does.” Jake states before taking a deep breath and finishing his drink in one go. “I just wish she would trust our love more than her fears.”
Once he comes home, Jake sits down on his couch, sighing loudly. He runs a hand on his face, emotionally drained. As soon as his hand lands on his thigh, his eyes find a picture hung beside his TV that he didn’t have the strength to remove. It’s a photo he took at the beginning of your relationship, more precisely the day you told each other ‘I love you’ for the first time.
You had spent the day at the beach during summer. The sun was setting down whilst you were laughing at a stupid sentence Jake had said. He had stopped laughing before you, admiring you while you tried to calm your laughter. Then, Jake had looked deeply in your eyes and he had said those three words so simple and yet, so powerful. You had replied the following second with a big smile on your face. Before leaving the beach, Jake had asked to immortalise this moment. Thinking back on it, it was cliché and cheesy but Jake didn’t care. For you, he would have done the most cliché gestures if it could make you break a smile.
Jake keeps staring at the picture, your relationship running in his head. Without noticing it, he tears up before the tears stream down his face. It’s the third time he cries since your break up. The first time, it was the night of the proposal after he went home and the second time, when Bradley explained to him the reason behind your ‘no’.
Jake has never been good with his emotions. Between his education and his work in the army, he’s never learned to put words on his pain and to accept being vulnerable. With you, he had succeeded to understand himself better and to open up. It was still complicated despite two years together but he had improved. Now, he is back to square one. He’s back to his shell, running away from his emotions. Though, it doesn’t mean his mind isn’t haunted by 'what if's. What if he never had this accident? What if he had seen right through your fears sooner? What if he had managed to reassure you? What if he had managed to convince you to get the help you need? What if everything was different?
As for you, the questions are similar. Every night, you torture your own mind before crying yourself to sleep whilst looking at the spot where there once was the picture of your first ‘I love you’ before you ripped it off from your bedroom wall just like you ripped off both of your hearts from your chest.

One look dark room, meant just for you
“Jakes staring again,” Amy hummed nudging you to look.
You made eye contact with Jake who quickly looked away, your face went red and you tried to hide your smile.
“He wasn’t even looking at me.” You reply, shutting down Amy’s ideas.
“If you say soooo,” she blew you a kiss and stumbled over to the bar.
Before you knew it Jake was over sitting beside you, you smiled and took a sip of your drink.
“Hey.” Jake said.
“Hi.” You replied.
“Having fun?”
“I guess, just very loud in here,” you shrugged.
“I can’t believe you’ve been with us for three years now,”
Time moves too fast, you play it back
“I remember how shy you were, how you were scared of Holt.” Jake teased.
“Shut up Jake.” You playful shoved his arm, then resumed fidgeting with the buttons on your coat. “I remember you being oh so adamant to help me.”
Buttons on a coat, lighthearted joke
The two of you went back and fourth, Jakes only goal was to torment you. Something he done very often, you didn’t mind you thought he was funny but never would you admit that.
“Do you want to get out of here?” Jake asked.
“Actually yeah, I’ll call a cab.”
“No need, I’ll drive us I haven’t been drinking.”
“Okay.”
No proof, not much. But you saw enough.
Jake stands up and holds out his hand to help you up, this of course had your face turning red and your heart thumping. It was the little things he done that mislead your heart, there were times where you swore your feelings were mutual. Maybe you were wrong, but sometimes you allowed yourself to dream.
Jake even went as far as opening the car door for you, usually you’d roll your eyes at the gentleman approach but for some reason it was sweet when Jake done it, as much as you’d joked that he was a womaniser you knew he was far from that.
Small talk, he drives.
“So how are you enjoying work recently? Feel like I haven’t seen you in ages.” You ask as Jake drives.
“The usual, busting drug lords, bringing down the mafia, saving the world day by day.” Jake replies.
“Ha ha very funny Peralta.” You roll your eyes, and his only response is a bashful grin, one that you know will reply in your mind.
Coffee, at midnight.
You and Jake went back to your apartment, you read the clock which hits midnight as he hands you a mug of coffee.
“Gonna be up all night,” Jake jokes.
“Oh I can image, you high on caffeine like a little child.” You tease, Jake just pulls a mocking face at you.
You go sit out on your balcony, Jake follows behind you and you sit in a comfortable silence drinking your coffee.
The light reflects, the chain on your neck.
“The moons reflecting on your necklace,” Jake says, bringing you out of your thoughts.
“Really?”
He says, “look up” and your shoulders brush.
“Look up,”
No proof, one touch. But you felt enough.
As you do you brush shoulders with Jake, the touch sending chills down your spine. It was as if he sent electrical waves coursing through your body, it just solidified your undying commitment. You ever longing attraction. It spoke volume.
You can hear it in the silence, you can feel it on the way home, you can see it with the lights out.
A comfortable silence emerged yet again over you both, that happened often with Jake. It’s not that you it was awkward but because you simply didn’t need to talk. As you watched him admire the moon the feeling that settled in your stomach grew, you found yourself reflecting on your feelings. It was simple. That feeling was heard in the silence that feeling was felt on the way home, and you could see it with the lights out. There’s was only one answer.
You are in love.
True love.
════════════════
Morning, his place.
You and Jake had been on your second date together, he asked you out two weeks ago. It came out in a complete blur.
You and Jake had just chased down a fugitive on the run, you ran two blocks which included jumping over fences and dodging hotdog carts. God this job was going to kill you. But finally you got the guy as a result of you lunging forward and landing on top of him knocking you both to the ground. Jake arrested him and you turn to make your way back to the car when he calls out for you.
“(Y/N)?”
You turn around, “yeah?”
“Go on a date with me tomorrow night?” He blurts out in one breath. You didn’t catch a word.
“What?”
“Go on a date with me tomorrow night?”
You couldn’t stop the stupid grin that overtook your face, of course you said yes. The date had gone so well, so well that when you got home you stayed awake all night thinking about him. And of course you had no hesitation asking him out for another date.
Burnt toast, Sunday.
Now you lay in his bed, slowly waking up. Although when you hear the fire alarm you jump up and run to the kitchen.
“Jake?! What the fuck!”
“Burnt toast…” Jake pulls a face and grabs the toast from the toaster, the toast which is fully cremated.
You look between Jake and the toast, the situation of course has you both laughing as you make him sit down. You from now on are appointed to make the food. You sit together on his couch eating toast (not cremated of course).
“You wearing my shirt?”
“I can take it off if you want… sorry it was just the first thing I grabbed.”
You keep his shirt.
“No why would you apologise keep it. Looks better on you.”
“Just my ex, got mad when I used his stuff.” You shrug, you didn’t realise how much that upset you until Jake lifted your chin.
He keeps his word.
“I promise I’ll never get mad at you,”
And for once, you let go, of your fears and your ghosts, one step, not much. But it said enough.
Usually you didn’t believe promises, but how could you not with Jake? Jake who was fiercely loyal and dedicated, Jake who would do anything to make someone smile. You knew he would keep his promises, and two months in that still withstood.
════════════════
“Jake!” You squeal running down the sidewalk.
He catches you and grabs your waist.
“You completely dodged the mistletoe.”
You kiss on sidewalks.
You roll your eyes and turn around, you wrap your arms around his neck and pull him close. You share a passionate kiss, one that has your head fuzzy and lips swollen by the end of you. When he pulls away you blush like an idiot and take his hand, you walk towards the car.
You fight, then you talk.
“No but seriously,” Jake starts as he gets into the car. “Why did you dodge the mistletoe. Is it about your family again?”
“Jake we’ve had this conversation.” You sigh as you turn on your engine and start the car up.
“I know but I don’t understand, you bring me to family events but you refuse to introduce me as your boyfriend.”
“Because it’s not that simple!”
“What’s not simple? All you have to say is ‘mom, dad this is my extremely handsome boyfriend Jake’ see easy.”
“Jake be serious come on,”
“Sorry. But please just tell me what’s so wrong with it, are you embarrassed of me or something?”
“How can you say that? Of course I’m not embarrassed of you Jake.” You sigh. “I don’t tell my family because I can’t handle them ruining this for me. Every time I’ve been happy they ruin it for me, either it’s them discrediting me becoming a detective because my sister has became a doctor, or it’s them making me feel bad for feeling sad when someone disappoints me, or most frequently it’s them picking apart all of my boyfriends because god forbid I’m happy for once. That’s why Jake. That’s why I refuse to introduce you as my boyfriend because I refuse to let them put things into my head.”
“I’m sorry, I had no idea.” Jake rubs a thumb over your hand.
“No it’s not your fault, I should have told you.”
════════════════
One night, he wakes
You smile looking at Jake before returning to your book, the lamp on your beside table dimly lights up the room. And again you find yourself staring at Jake, who’s so peacefully sleeping. His features outlined by the light, making him look ethereal. You were staring so intensely that you almost didn’t notice him waking up.
Strange look on his face
“Why are you looking at me like that.” You softly laugh, “everything okay?”
Pauses, then says;
“You’re my best friend.”
And you knew what it was.
The simplicity of the words has your throat stifling. You could recognise that realisation anywhere.
He is in love.
You knew he shared it too.
You can hear it in the silence, you can feel it on the way home, you can see it with the lights out.
Finally you weren’t alone in this. You shared it, the love lingered all around. It was heard in the silence by both, it was felt on the way home by both, and it was seen with the lights out, by both.

note: Fluff until Quaritch and Tsu’teys bit. Neteyam x reader. Jake x Neytiri. Tsu’tey x reader. Quaritch x reader !Na’vi reader. Suggestive content.
Tumblr media
Neteyam
Has a habit of plucking items off the ground with his tail. He developed it after seeing Neytiri do the same with Tuks toys.
He scurries around the room with his tail in tow, lashing at things its meaning to grab. Sometimes he’ll even use his tail to grab Tuk after a playdate, it wraps around her forearm as if to say “we have to leave, now” while she begs for another five minutes.
Can we all agree that Neteyam would be an adorable malewife bc this whole “picking up” sht with his tail screams laundry day or general cleaning, and he’s scolding his kids for tossing their loincloths everywhere.
I know he’s a mighty warrior, but at least this headcanon wont get him killed 😊🙏🏼
Tumblr media
Jake
He translates sky people songs in Na’vi so he can claim them as his own. Who’s gonna know? Neytiri is under the impression that Jake is secretly a genius composer, whole time bro is plagiarizing Taylor Swift! Neytiri, of course, is wooed and enjoys her mates off-tune singing.
Love Story, Taylor Swift
Stand by me, Ben E. King
Cant take my eyes off of you, Frankie
Fly me to the moon, Frank Sinatra
Each song describes his love for Neytiri, especially Love story. She’s his very own alien princess Juliet.
Tumblr media
Tsu’tey, Quaritch
Not the type to stop fucking into you even when you’re both walked in on. Why should he when you’re so tight around him, convulsing after each stroke and begging for more. Whoever the intruder is can take the hint and get the fuck out before he decides to pluck their eyeballs. Once they’ve left he resumes an even more brutal pace until you’re both spent and doubled over in each others cum and sweat.

Tumblr media
(gif not mine)
"I'm sorry, he's gone." Those were the words that kept replaying over and over in your head. He wasn't dead, but he might as well be.
The words, "He's gone" kept playing over and over in your head, and it wasn't like you wanted to keep thinking about it, you were driving in silence, left alone with nothing but your thoughts. After almost half an hour on the road, you finally reached for the radio nozzle and turned it on.
You flipped through the channels, trying to find one that wasn't playing some kind of love song, and ended up on a station that played nothing but Christmas music, and even then there were some Christmas love songs that hurt more than the actual love song.
After driving all afternoon with no breaks, you were somehow still awake and moving, only running on a couple cups of crappy coffee and a bagel from that morning, you ended up at a bar.
You pushed open the bar doors, paying no mind to all the eyes that were immediately drawn to you. You plopped down on a barstool and waited for the bartender to come over and take your order.
"What can I get you?" The bartender asked, her eyes warm and inviting.
"Something strong." She smiled and grabbed a glass, pouring you a shot of something.
The question she was about to ask quickly died on her lips after she watched you down the shot, "That bad, huh?"
"The guy I thought I was gonna spend the rest of my life with left me at the altar. I've been driving since 2 in the afternoon, and it's..." You looked up at the clock, "10, so I've had a pretty shit day." You nodded, keeping your eyes locked on the ring still on your finger.
As you continued to stare at it, the more you wanted it off. You didn't know why it took you so long to take it off, but when you did it almost felt like a weight had been lifted off your shoulders.
"You know what? This rounds on me." The woman smiled, "I'm Penny."
"Y/N." You smiled. She was called away by another customer but offered you another smile before making her way over to the man.
"White dress? Don't tell me you got a groom at home waitin' for you?" You turned around to match a face to the voice. You were fully expecting a jerky-looking guy but were surprised to find a man in service khakis, a pilot, standing behind you.
"Nope." You answered with a simple shake of your head.
"I gotta say, this is very Friends-like.” He commented, “Girl runs into a bar wearing a wedding dress.”
“She ran into a cafe.” You corrected.
“Potato-Potato.” He rolled his eyes, “Can I ask why you’re in a bar in a wedding dress? I know there's a story there."
"Not much to talk about." You shrugged.
"There's always a story."
"Oh, there's a story, just not a very interesting one." You tried to brush it off, "What's your name?" You attempted to change the subject.
"Hangman." He flashed you an almost cocky smile.
"Hangman?"
"It's my callsign." The smirk didn't once fall from his face as he held out his hand, "What's your name?"
"Y/N." You shook his hand.
-
The same ritual continued for the next couple of nights. You would sit at the bar, drinking only one drink, paying but not leaving until closing.
If you left right after you finished your drink, you would be stuck going back to the empty hotel room with nothing but your thoughts, and the thought of that was almost as scary as the situation you were in at that very moment. Alone and trying to navigate your way through this new life alone.
"Another one?" Penny offered.
"No, I'm good." You smiled.
"So, I heard through the grapevine that you're moving to town."
"From who?"
"Mrs. Neilson and I are pretty close." You smiled. The owner of the hotel you were staying at greeted you with open arms and welcomed you as if you had known each other for years when you first arrived at her hotel.
"She would be correct. I am."
"She also mentioned something about you looking for a job." Penny brought up.
"I am. Is there anything else she mentioned? Perhaps the name of my first pet." You joked.
She smiled, "She's kind of a gossiper, but she means well. Anyways, I bring it up because I could always use some help around the bar."
"Really? Wait, is this you offering me a job, because if it's not, this would be really awkward."
She laughed again, "Yes, this is me offering you a job."
"Sweet, all right, what time do you need me, boss?"
"Can you start tomorrow?"
"I guess I could move some things around." You joked.
"Great. Can you come in at 3? Just to start training?"
"See you then."
-
The next night, you were behind the bar, serving people drinks, "That was fast." You heard. You glanced over and saw Hangman.
"Didn't have many any other options." You shrugged, "So, what can I get you?"
"What do you suggest?" You gave him your input and poured him the drink when he gave you the 'okay', "How're you doing?"
You shrugged, "Working helps the "not thinking" part." You admitted.
"Do you want to talk about it?" You shook your head, "All right, changing the subject." He nodded, "So, heard you're looking for somewhere to live."
"What? Was it plastered across the pinboard in town hall or something?" You joked.
"Nah, saw a poster hanging in the bathroom down by the beach," He joked, and you rolled your eyes, "I heard you and Penny talking the other night."
"Oh." You nodded.
"And I have a spare room." You stared at him, trying to decipher what was going on in his mind, "I'm offering it to you."
"Thanks, I'm okay." You shook your head.
"Oh, come on, why not?"
"That's a stupid question." You scoffed, "You're a man, you could murder me or something. I think I'll take my chances at the hotel instead."
"Oh, come on."
"Why are you pushing this so hard? We barely know each other. We had one conversation."
"A very long and lengthy one. It was like 2 and a half hours. I know all your deepest darkest secrets."
"I might've been a little tipsy, but I wasn't at the "sharing my deepest darkest secrets with a stranger" tipsy level yet." You told him.
"Does anyone else know that you partially contributed to Louis, the family dog, running away?"
"All right, no, but that's not my point. I don't even know your last name."
"Seresin." He answered without missing a beat.
"Jake..."
"Come on."
"Let's make a deal. If you can't find someone within the next week, you come to stay with me for a few days, and if you do find a place, then you find a place."
"Why're you pushing this so hard?"
"Can't a friend just look out for a friend?"
"I wasn't aware we were friends."
"Ouch." He held a hand over his heart as if he had been hit there, "You sure know how to wound a guy." You rolled your eyes, "Do we have a deal, Ice Queen?"
You pursed your lips, stared at him, and against all better judgment, you shook the hand he had held out, "Deal."
-
"Is that the last one?" Jake asked as he slid the last of your bags into the bed of his truck.
"Yeah." You nodded. You spent 5 days looking for somewhere to live, and after finding nothing,
"Didn't really take a lot, did you?"
"When I was packing, I wasn't really thinking. I was just thinking about getting the heck out of there."
"All right, I get it." He nodded, "Just follow me home."
After you followed him home, he quickly started unloading everything into the guest room you would now call home, "Welcome home."
"I really appreciate you letting me stay here. And just so you know, I can clean and do all the housework since you, for some reason, won't let me pay for anything. My offer to pay for all my water and electricity still stands." You told him.
He smiled, "It's fine, really. I'm not really paying for anything as it is."
"Who's paying?"
"Uncle Sam." He carried one of your boxes into your new room.
"Well, crap, maybe I should've enlisted." You muttered.
-
You were getting settled in perfectly. You had a great job, had met some friends, and had a pretty cool place to live that wasn't too far from the beach, and things with Jake were even looking up.
You were becoming friends, and not like people you become friends with because you sit next to them in a class, you were actual friends who did things outside of school.
"I have work tonight, so you're on your own for dinner tonight."
He gasped, "You want me to starve?"
"Oh, whatever. You'll figure something out, and if not, there's always a frozen pizza in the freezer." You reminded him.
"Really? The Tony's pizza in the freezer? It tastes like cardboard." He complained
"Well, we have pasta in the cabinet." You shrugged, "Anyways, have a good day."
"Where're you going?"
"I have some errands to run for Penny."
"Wow, week 4, and you're already an errand girl." Jake joked.
"Harhar." You rolled your eyes, "See you later."
"Yeah, I'll stop by the bar with a snack for you after I'm done."
"Thanks, appreciate it. Have fun, don't burn the house down." You patted him on the shoulder as you headed out the door.
"I'll try not to." He called after you.
-
Later that night, true to his word, Jake showed up at the bar after whatever he was doing that day with a plastic bag full of some snacks, "There you are! I was starting to think you forgot all about me." You joked, taking the bag from him and looking in it.
"Nope, didn't forget. Your Redbull was hard to find. Had to go to two different stores to find it."
"Aw, you didn't have to. I would've settled for a regular one." You smiled.
"I'll remember that for next time." He nodded, a smirk on his face, "Now, can I please have a drink?"
"Of course." You smiled, grabbing him a glass and pouring him his usual drink.
"Y/N?" You heard from the doorway of the bar. You looked up and your eyes widened, "Wow, you don't know how long I've been looking for you."
You stared at the person who had entered the bar the entire time they made their way over, unmoving, "I almost gave up, but I couldn't leave you behind." He flashed you a smile that a couple weeks prior probably would have had you swooning.
"What are you doing here, Jared?"
"Coming back to get my fiance." That perked Jake's interest, and he looked between you and your "fiance" briefly, before turning his attention to Jared.
"I don't think we've met."
"Do I know you?"
"You will in about two seconds. It's nice to meet you, Jared." Jared, ever the douche, squared off against the guy who was at least five inches taller, "I'm Jake, but my friends call me Hangman."
"What? Did your parents hate you?"
"Did I leave out the Lieutenant part?" Jared visually paled, "Damn, I always seem to leave that part out." He snapped his fingers as if reprimanding himself for the mistake.
"Why are you here, Jared?" You repeated, ignoring Jake’s dramatics.
"Well, I've always stated." He glanced over at Jake from the corner of his eye, before keeping his attention on you, "I came back for you, and you weren't answering my calls."
"You aren't stupid, Jared. When someone doesn't answer your phone calls, it usually means they don't want to talk to you." You told him, turning around and going to help another customer.
"Oh, yeah, walk away. Like you always do. If there's one thing you're good at, I'd say it's walking away."
"Look, buddy..." Jake stepped in.
"No, you know what? I've got it. Tell Penny I'm going on break." You exited from behind the bar and nodded over to Jared who followed you out the door. Jared followed with a satisfied smirk, sure to flash it to Jake, "And you, I wouldn't be running a victory lap yet, seeing as you were the jerk who left his future wife waiting at the altar." It was Jake's turn to smirk as he watched Jared follow you outside.
Once outside, you turn to Jared, "All right, talk. You have 10 minutes, then I'm cutting you off." You crossed your arms. You stood there, listening to Jared ramble for about 5 minutes about how guilty he felt, for leaving you.
At the eight-minute mark, you were getting tired, "All right, stop, just stop it. This wasn't an accident, this was pre-meditated, and don't even deny it. I don't know why you came all this way, maybe to gloat or something, but now that you're here and you can see I'm fine, now it's your time to leave."
"Come on, Y/N."
"No, you can't come in with your little kind attitude, trying to get me back. Guess what, the girl you knew? She's gone, you left that girl at the altar. She's as good as dead."
"You've been gone, for what? A month? All right, times up. It's time to come home." He reached for your arm.
"No, I'm not going anywhere. I'm staying here, right where I am. This is my life now, and if you don't like it, then swell. You aren't a part of it anymore so it doesn't affect you."
"Y/N..."
"Go, Jared. Leave. Don't let the "Thanks for visiting" sign hit you on the ass on your way out." You waved sarcastically. You turned, but let out a loud exclamation in pain when he grabbed your arm.
Jake had been standing close by in case he had to step in, and when he heard your loud exclamation, he jumped into action and pushed the doors of the bar open.
When he stepped outside, he stopped in his place when he saw Jared laying on the ground, holding his face in pain, and you standing off to the side, wringing out your hand and wincing in pain.
"All right then, remind me never to get you angry, Rocky" He joked, helping you towards the back entrance of the bar so he could help with your injured hand.
"You wanna talk about it?" Jake asked as he smacked an ice pack against a table, then held it onto your hand.
You winced, "Nope."
"All right, Muhammad Ali,"
"Stop it with the boxer nicknames." You swatted his hands away.
"I won't ask. But when you're ready, I'm here for you."
"Thank you, Bagman." You joked. He softly punched your shoulder before making his way back out to the bar.
-
"Let me get this straight." You were on the phone in the backroom with one of the only people in your family who actually knew where you were, your best friend, who really was more a part of the family, Anna, "Jared came into the bar, guns blazing, and you knocked him out?"
"Yep."
"And how's Captain America doing?"
"Don't know. All I know is he paid for everyone's drinks. Bar rules."
"Right, right, and how about Iron Man?"
"Jake?" You asked.
"Yeah, I guess in this situation he would be Captain America 'cause he works for America, but whatever."
"Jake's fine."
"No smooching?"
"Hanging up now." You sighed.
"No, come on. I'm joking." Anna whined, "Come on, tell me all the juicy gossip. Have you seen him naked yet?"
"Goodbye, Anna."
"You're no fun." She groaned, "Whatever, I'll come down to visit soon and you can show me to all his fun pilot friends."
"Oh, I'll be eagerly awaiting."
"Shut up. I love you."
"Love you, too." You smiled.
-
Hangman was lounging on the couch, waiting for you to get home when his phone rang. He quickly reached for it, hoping it was you. His mood instantly lifted when he saw it was you.
"Did you lock yourself out again?" He joked.
"Well, not exactly." His face hardened when he heard a male voice answer the phone.
"Who is this?"
"Whoa, pump your brakes, sweet cakes. This is Julian calling from the bar on Gilmore, and when asked who she wanted to call, Y/N said you."
"How many did she have?"
"Well, Javi kept buying her drinks."
"Who's Javi?"
"Don't worry, kicked him out. He was getting a little handsy with someone else. You're all good, you don't have to worry about getting all macho. Our bouncer had a jolly 'ole time doing it."
"Alright, I'm leaving right now." Jake sighed.
"Great. And hopefully, you look as pretty as you sound." Julian flirted.
In record-breaking time, Jake got to the bar and saw you slumped over the bar, "Look, there he is. Your prince charming." The man, Jake presumed was Julian, grabbed your attention.
Your head slowly came up and you looked over at him, and when you saw him, you dropped your head back down, "Never thought I'd get that reaction." He joked, making his way over to you, "How much did she have to drink?" He asked.
"Only a few," Julian answered.
"What did she have to drink?" He asked.
"The pretty pink one."
"The pretty pink one?"
"Javi bought her two drinks and was on the highway to number 3, but I cut her off."
"Thanks, appreciate it." Jake nodded, running a hand up and down your back, "Come on, let's get you home and in bed."
"No, sleep right here." You shook your head.
Jake looked up at Julian for any help. Julian, in response, raised his hands in surrender, "I don't think Julian would like that very much."
"But comfy." You curled into the seat that Jake knew wasn't comfortable.
He tried to think of something. He glanced around the bar for anything but found nothing. So, the next best thing was to carry you out of the bar himself.
He slid your jacket around your shoulders and slipped your bag onto his shoulder before locking his arms under your knees and arms, "Come on, let's get you home."
"Bye, Julian." You waved a limp hand in his direction.
"Bye, honey." He laughed.
"So, what's with the evening drinking?" Jake asked as he carried you back to the car.
"He came back." You told him as you let out a yawn and snuggled further into his chest.
Jake hesitated, "Who came back?"
"Who do you think, silly? Jared." You giggled.
"Jared came back? What? Why didn't you tell me?"
"I tried, but your boss picked up and said you were up in the sky." Jake's mind was going 1000 miles an hour as he tried to formulate words and understand what you were saying.
"What'd he say?"
"He tried to get me back again." You explained, "And when I said no, he accused me of cheating, then called me mean names."
"What mean names?" Jake asked. You shook your head, "All right, you don't have to tell me." He gave an understanding nod, "Come on, let's get you home."
Jake drove you home, got you ready for bed, and was just about to turn off the lamp on your bedside table when you reached over and grabbed his hand.
"Stay, please." You whispered.
"You want me to stay?" You nodded, "All right." You scooted over and he crawled in next to you. The moment he was settled in your bed that was much too small for him, you cuddled into his side.
He stared down at you as you got comfortable, head resting on his chest while your arms were wrapped around his waist. He wrapped an arm around your shoulders as he laid in silence, listening as your breathing evened out.
He laid there, deep in thought as he digested what you had told him.
-
The next morning, you woke up with a gigantic pounding headache and a warm body next to you. You looked up, then closed your eyes again, opening them again incase you were dreaming and Jake sleeping in your bed was all just a figment of your imagination.
You stared at him for an extra couple of seconds before your brain started working. You carefully unwrapped his arms from around you and tiptoed out of your room.
You made your way into the kitchen, trying to think back to what had occurred the night before. You grabbed your jacket and keys off the counter and then bolted out of the apartment as quietly as you could.
You drove around for a few hours, trying to clear your mind. You picked up your phone and called Anna, "Do you know what time it is?"
"Anna, you're like an hour ahead of me. It's 10 o'clock here, which means it's 11 o'clock there."
"Exactly, sleepy time." Anna yawned.
"Well, wake up, 'cause I think I have a problem."
"All right, what's wrong? Is it about Jared?"
"Sort of." You nodded. You filled her in on all the drama that had occurred in the last 24 hours. After you told her what had happened, she stayed silent, too stunned to speak.
"Hello? Anna?"
"Well, this isn't fair. Why is your life so much more interesting than mine?" She whined.
You scoffed, "Well, I'm glad you think that way." You rolled your eyes.
"It's not like that. It's just, that you're literally living life like a movie."
"Well, whenever the credits want to roll, I'm ready and waiting." You joked.
-
As you worked that day, you were dreading the moment the clock stroke 7. That was when Jake came in. Like clockwork, he came in at 7 after work with a bright smile on his face, directed at you.
That night, things were a bit different. He came in at 6:50, with no smirk on his face and looking as disheveled as ever. The hair that he endlessly worried about was sticking up everywhere and looking out of place, and his dress khakis.
"Hey." He walked up to the bar, "Can I talk to you?"
You nodded, wiping your hands on the towel on your shoulder, then followed him outside, "So, what'd you want to-"
"What the hell is going on?"
"What're you talking about?"
"I wake up, and you're gone."
"I wasn't aware we were expected to wake each other up with sweet nothings and neck kisses." You joked.
"Y/N..." He sighed.
"Right, sorry, serious." You nodded, "I fled because I was scared. I didn't remember a lot of what happened last night, so I was a little discombobulated."
"Okay, fair, but no note?"
"Is that proper edicate when you leave someone in bed?" When he didn't answer, you continued, "Look, I'm sorry I left you there, but I didn't know what to think of it. I was confused, hungover, and trying to piece together what happened."
"Just... next time, give me a call or something."
"Next time? You know something I don't, Seresin?" You smirked.
"We'll see, depends on how you answer my next question." He crossed his arms, a smirk on his face.
"Ask away." You nodded.
"Y/N, would you like to get dinner together? Possibly catch a movie together?"
"Oh, that depends. I'll have to check my schedule." You pretended to ponder, before looking back at him, "Looks like I'm free."
"Great, I'll be knocking on your door tomorrow at 5, so don't be late."
"I'll try not to be." You smiled.
-
"I feel like I talked the entire night," Jake commented as you headed towards the movie theater that was only a few blocks from the restaurant you had just eaten at.
"I don't mind." You shrugged with a smile as you hugged his jacket that he had placed over your shoulders tighter around your body.
"Enough about me. Let's talk about you."
"What do you want to know?"
"Let's start out easy. What did you do before you... moved here?" He hesitated, choosing his words carefully.
You smiled at his thoughtfulness, "You mean before I got left at the altar. You can say it, you don't have to beat around the bush." He nodded, "I worked, well owned, and still own, a flower shop."
"A flower shop? Really?"
"Yeah. I bought it a few years after college, and I worked there with my cousin, but during the wedding, Anna, my cousin, told me to take a step back and started taking over the owner duties."
"Wow, I never would've thought." He chuckled.
"Yeah, but since I moved here, I sort of handed off the reigns to Anna, and from what I've heard, she's doing wonderfully, so I don't have anything to worry about."
"Do you miss it?" He asked.
"What? My life in Colorado Springs? Not really." You shook your head, "It was great to have all my family and friends so close and I love them all so much, but it was also suffocating. So, moving away for the first time ever, it feels like I can finally breathe."
"Yeah, I know what you mean." Jake nodded a smile on his face and a look in your eyes you couldn't decipher.
"And plus, I've created a great life here, and I've only been here for like 3 months."
"Great life how?" He egged on.
"Well, I've got a great job, got a great group of friends, the beach is pretty awesome, plus, they have some pretty good burgers down here."
"Aren't you forgetting something?"
"Job, friends, beach, burgers? Nope, I think I've got everything." You pursed your lips as you thought about it.
"Really? I think you might be missing something." Jake pushed.
You pretended to think about it for an extra second, "Oh, that's right!" You exclaimed, and the smile returned to his face, "There is this amazing bookstore a couple blocks away from the grocery store we always go to."
He groaned and rolled his eyes, "I'm kidding." You laughed, "I met you, and you're kind of pretty amazing."
"Kind of pretty amazing? I'm awesome. I'm such a catch." He stated.
"All right, let's try to shrink down that ego of yours." You wrapped your arms around his waist, "You are a pretty cool catch."
"You are, too." He wrapped his arms around your waist, "I guess I have Jared to thank for something."
"Thank Jared? For what?"
"If he didn't leave you at the altar, you wouldn't have driven from Colorado to here-"
"The wedding was actually in San Francisco." You muttered.
"Why was your wedding in San Francisco?"
"Jared's family lives in San Francisco." You explained, "But, whatever, get on with what you were saying."
"Right, right. If he didn't leave you there and if you wouldn't have driven here, I wouldn't have met you and we wouldn't have been here."
"I guess we do have Jared to thank for this." You smiled.
"Now, let's never talk about him again."
"Let's." You nodded.
"Now, can I kiss you?"
"That would be wonderful." You smiled. He smiled back, then leaned down. As you kissed him back, you could see the credits rolling in your head.

Confession Of Love - Jake "Hangman" Seresin [1/2]
Tumblr media
Masterlist
Speak Now TV Masterlist
Part two
Part one - two (French version)
Summary : You've been seeing Jake for four months but you're still not officially dating. It's going to happen soon, though, right ?
Warnings : Jake is an asshole (it's not against him, I love him, I swear), angst, cheating, alcohol consumption (be careful with your alcohol consumption), maybe some grammatical mistakes as English is not my first language, tell me if you see some or if I missed any warnings.
Word count : 4.7k
Song inspiration : Foolish One (Taylor's Version) (From The Vault) by Taylor Swift
you take the new arrival of books in the box next to you and put them in the correct shelves. You pay attention to place them in alphabetical order and sometimes, you take a look at the back cover, adding then a new book to your - long - to be read list. You set the last book of a saga in its place when a masculine voice comes behind you.
“Sorry, would you have a book on how to apologise after cancelling a date last minute ?”
“Jake !” you exclaim, taking him in your arms. “What are you doing here ?”
“I felt bad about yesterday. Those are for you.” he says, breaking the embrace and handing you a big bunch of red roses.
“Oh, thank you ! They’re beautiful.” you smile, pecking his lips, “But I already told you it was okay. You were tired because of your day at work, I get it. We can always plan something another time, like tonight for example. My shift ends at 6:30 P.M, you can come pick me up at seven.”
Hope can be heard in your voice on top of nervosity. Jake and you can’t see each other frequently because of his job as a naval aviator and he’s also often hanging out with his friends. You’re aware it’s normal for Jake and you to not spend every single day together though, two or three times a week would be a good start you think.
You look at him, waiting for his answer impatiently but as soon as you hear him sigh, you guess his answer. Even if you expected it, you can’t help but feel disappointed.
“The problem is I already told my colleague I would spend the night with them.”
“It’s okay. You can send me a text when you’re free.” you affirm, forcing a little smile.
“Perfect. I’m not gonna bother you much longer. See you.” he says and kisses you.
You lovingly watch Jake leaving. Once he’s not in your line of sight anymore, you smell the roses and your disappointment leaves your body to let affection take over. It doesn’t matter if he wasn’t able to have some free time for you that night, he always makes sure to make it up to you like today. You stay in your bubble and walk in the direction of the backshop to put the flowers down. You find a container to put your roses in when your colleague Cora blows your bubble.
“Who gifted you those roses ?”
“Jake. They’re pretty, aren’t they ?”
“Wow, he must feel ashamed about a lot of things.” she comments, gazing at the flowers while you put them in the makeshift vase.
“Not at all. Why do you say that ?”
“Like they always say, the bigger the bouquet, the bigger the guilt.”
“No one says that.” you state, frowning.
“He cancelled again, didn’t he ?” she says, her question sounding more like an affirmation.
“He has a good reason.”
“I bet he does ! I don’t understand how you can still be with him. If my boyfriend was always cancelling dates, I-”
“He’s not my boyfriend.” you interrupt her, avoiding her gaze.
“What do you mean ?”
“We’re not really dating.” you inform and she gives you a look so you quickly add : “We’re taking things slow. Jake can be on a deployment any day so we don’t want too many strings attached.”
“Wait, you’re telling me you’ve been with a guy for more than four months, you go on dates, you kiss, you sleep at each other’s house but you’re not official ? He’s worse than I thought. I mean, Y/N, don’t forget about his reputation ! Jake doesn’t do serious relationship. And just to prove it to you, has he finally presented you to his friends ?” Cora asks and you stay silent. “That’s what I thought. Why are you still with him ? He’s going to break your heart just like Logan.”
“He’s different !” you say, angry by her words and the mention of your ex. “Look, you don’t know him and you know nothing about my relationship with Jake so stop giving me unsolicited advice. I’ve learned from my mistakes, I know what I’m doing.”
On that note, you pass by your colleague and go back to your work. While you keep reorganising the books, you can’t prevent yourself from thinking back to your conversation with Cora. You know she didn’t mean any harm but you’re annoyed by the way she thinks you’re too foolish to know how to handle your love life on your own. You’ve known men… stupid ones, to stay politically correct, however you know better now and Jake has proven to you he’s different from your exes. It’s not because he cancels a lot of dates that he’s a bad guy. He is a nice guy. You’re sure of it.
At the end of the day, you take back your roses and bid Cora goodbye without adding anything else, still pissed off by her words. Upon arriving at your place, you put the roses in a real vase and set it on your dinner table.
That night, you spend it alone eating, watching Pride And Prejudice. As you’re watching it, you can’t help but melt because of Mr.Darcy’s confession of love to Elizabeth. You’re waiting for the day where it’ll be your turn, the day where, like those cheesy romances you read, you will get your confession full of love by the love of your life. You know you look like a hopeless romantic but you grew up with this idea of great love stories where the man is perfect and you’ve been searching for him since your teenage years. Maybe Jake will be this man and he’ll confess his feelings to you soon. You like him a lot and you wish you could share the future you have in mind with him.
Once your movie is over, you take your phone and check your notifications. You haven’t received anything. Not a call, nor a message. You thought that maybe Jake would send you a text to tell you about his day or at least say some nice words but nothing. Radio silence. It should be a good sign he’s having fun with his friends and yet, you can’t stop yourself from thinking this silence sounds like some bad signs ; he doesn’t seem to miss you. Sure he’s with his friends, you know he’s not spending his night on his phone though, a text wouldn’t be too much ! With mixed feelings, you put down your phone and start watching another romantic movie.
During the whole night, you keep checking your phone without any change. When you go to bed around midnight, you keep on sighing and your mind starts thinking back to your relationship with Jake and to doubt it.
Once you’re laying down on your bed, you glance one last time at your phone and when you see nothing new, you groan and aggressively put your cellphone on your nightstand. You change position in your bed and try to fall asleep, in vain. You toss and turn and yet, you don’t seem to be comfortable enough and your mind who is currently overthinking doesn’t make things better. This lack of message from Jake hurts you more than you care to admit. One thing is certain, you won’t get your love confession tonight. Maybe you shouldn't have gotten ahead of yourself so much ? Maybe your relationship with Jake won’t last ? Maybe there was a little bit of truth in Cora’s words ? You shake your head, hoping to get rid of these voices who start to make you more puzzled. If you discuss it with Jake, surely the situation will get better. Right ?
At least, you feel like the situation gets better the following week. You haven’t really talked with Jake but you’ve been able to see each other more often.
Today, you spend the afternoon together. You don’t do anything special. Jake just came to your apartment and you stay on the couch watching movies and talking about random things.
Your head on his shoulder, you think you were right to trust Jake. When he has the time, he’s the perfect… boyfriend ? Partner ? Friend ? Whatever the word may be, he is perfect. You never argue and your conversation knows no awkward silence ; everything is for the best in the best of all possible worlds. You even feel like you’re getting closer and closer to the moment where you’ll finally be official. You’ll finally be able to call him yours and you’ll be able to share more than some hours here and there with Jake. You can imagine a whole future with him, that’s why you want to believe so hard that what you have is something good, despite the particular circumstances.
As soon as it’s getting late, Jake gets ready to go back to his house. From time to time, he stays to sleep at yours however when he has to wake up early the next day, he prefers to go home, his apartment being closer to his workplace. Once he’s set to go, Jake walks to the door while you follow him, tiredness visible on your face.
“Send me a message when you’ve arrived.” you say, yawning and Jake tenderly looks at you.
“I will.”
“Can we see each other next Saturday ?”
“I’ve already got something planned with my squad at the Hard Deck.”
“And do you think it’d bother them a lot if I came with you ?” you ask with a small voice before embarrassment catches you. “Sorry, it was rude. I shouldn’t have invited myself like that. It was stupid. I… Tell me when you get home. Good night.” you exclaim, ready to close the door but Jake stops you.
“It wasn’t stupid. Actually, I’ve been thinking of introducing you to them for a long time now.”
“Really ?”
“Sure. We’ve known each other for four months, it’s normal for you to meet them. I’ll pick you up and we’ll spend the whole evening together.” he states, putting his hands on your cheeks.
“Perfect.”
“Goodnight, Y/N.”
Jake gives you a smile before pressing his lips on yours. Your kiss only lasts a few seconds and you enjoy it as much as possible, celebrating this new milestone in your relationship. You’re still not official, nonetheless he wants to introduce you to his friends, you’re on the right track. Once Jake breaks the kiss, he tenderly strokes your cheek before turning around and walking away. You watch him leave then close your door, a goofy smile on your face.
When you get to the Hard Deck, Jake’s arm around your waist the following Saturday, it’s not a goofy smile you have on your face anymore but a nervous one. You know Jake is close with his colleagues and you want to make a good impression. You hope with all your heart this moment will go well. For you, this is a key moment and you can’t allow yourself to make a wrong move.
As soon as you find the group of people wearing Khakis, except one man is wearing a Hawaiian shirt, your hands become a bit more clammy. Jake quickly introduces you to every member of his squadron and you do your best to remember their names. For now, you only know Natasha’s name, as she’s the only woman. Jake proposes something to drink and judging you need to relax, you ask for a beer. He kisses your cheek before going to the bar, leaving you alone.
“I can’t believe you’re real.” Natasha starts with eyes wide open. “When Bagman told us he wanted to present us to someone, I thought he was joking. I never thought he was the kind of guy to settle down and I have to admit, I’m surprised to see you can put up with him.”
“Once you get to know him, he lets the arrogance go and you realise he’s a nice guy.” you respond, laughing.
“Hangman said you two met four months ago, right ?” Bradley questions.
“Yes, at a café. I had just gotten my coffee when Jake bumped into me and, long story short, he offered me a new coffee with his number on the cup.”
“I see he still knows how to make a good first impression.” Natasha jokes. “What do you do in life ?”
“I work in a bookshop. I’m paid to be surrounded by books, I couldn’t have dreamed of anything better.”
“That’s so cool ! I should come sometime. I haven’t read a new book in a long time.” Bradley informs you and instantly, your eyes shimmers with excitement.
“Oh ! I can give you recommendations if you want. What genre do you prefer ?”
Ensued then a conversation about your favourite topic : books. Bradley tells you some titles he likes, novels he’s been meaning to read for years and you listen to him with passion. You give him a whole list of authors and books to check out and he writes them down on his phone. Thinking you might have some other recommendations for him later, you ask him to give you his number. At the same time you’re saving his contact, Jake comes back to you and puts his arm around your shoulders.
“You’re not stealing her from me, aren’t you Bradshaw ?”
“We were talking about books, a subject you might not be familiar with.” Bradley retorts and Jake smirks.
“Oh no, she talks about it all the time. You haven’t finished getting new suggestions.” Jake says, faking desperation in his voice.
“Hey ! You’ve discovered good books thanks to me.” you defend.
“True. Anyway I’m going to play pool. You’re good here ?”
“Yeah, I am.”
Jake smiles at you before going to find his friend at the pool table. You stay with Bradley, Natasha and Bob, who just came next to you. You keep getting to know each other and you feel better, realising you don’t struggle to fit in - you’re not really the social butterfly, preferring your books more than people.
As the conversation goes on, you learn that Bradley is a good pianist and you ask to see him play. He doesn’t need to be asked twice and walk to the piano before playing Great Ball Of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis. Natasha, Bob and you sing with him and you’re quickly followed by the other people in the bar. Jake comes to you and sings by your side and sometimes he spins you around.
Once Bradley finishes the song, you laugh with your new friends, glad to realise you’re having a good time. Jake asks you if you want something else to drink and you inform him you haven’t finished your beer yet. He tells you he’s going to grab another drink, leaving you for a moment.
“Natasha wasn’t joking when she said you were an outstanding pianist ! Very good choice of song, by the way.” you compliment Bradley.
“It’s my favourite. My dad used to play it when I was a kid. I have good memories with this song and my parents.”
“I can see that. Your parents seemed to be cute together.”
When you talked earlier, Bradley quickly told you about his parents and you have to admit the way he speaks of their relationship, it looks like a story from one of your favourite books.
“They were !” Bradley confirms with nostalgia. “Maybe too much. I’d like a relationship like theirs.”
“I’m sure you will. You seem like an amazing guy. You deserve a love story as beautiful as theirs.”
“You too.”
Bradley smiles at you before talking about his pianist skills while you’re searching for Jake next to the bar. You expected to see him with a drink in hand, but it’s a vision of Jake with a woman who has her arms around his neck that you find. Your eyebrows furrowed, not knowing who this woman is and why she’s so close to your… to Jake. Jake gets rid of the woman’s arms then tells her something. He comes back to you at the same time where Bradley excuses himself to use the bathroom.
“Who was she ?” you question, not giving him the time to start a conversation.
“Who ?”
“The woman who was literally in your arms.”
“Oh, huh, I don’t know. She tried to flirt with me but I told her I was already in good company.” Jake explains with a flirty smile yet, you stay sceptical. “Y/N, I swear I don’t know her. You don’t have to worry.”
“I’m not. I’m curious, that’s all.” you lie.
Not fully convinced by your affirmation, Jake put his hands on your cheeks before leaning in and kissing you with passion. Even if you still have some doubt, Jake’s kiss helps you to calm down.
However, it’s really during the following weeks that you feel much better. Jake is being more present, casting away every doubt you have in mind. He’s managed to have some free time for you and you’ve even spent three days together, something never done before in your relationship. This time, you’re sure, everything is alright. Everything Cora told you or even everything you thought was fake. No matter what people say about Jake and his love life, you are the exception. Jake cares about you and he’s honest. Your relationship has a real future.
You’re so over the moon that you’re not as sad as usual when Jake tells you he can’t spend the evening at your place because he’s exhausted. You wish him a good rest before reading your book again. You’re in the middle of a chapter when you receive a message from your friend Laura who you haven’t seen in months. She asks you if you want to come to the bar next to her place. As you miss your friend, you accept without a second thought before getting ready.
Once you arrive at the Scented Sky bar, you have a big smile on your face, impatient to meet Laura. Once you leave your car, your eyes find their way to a vehicle not too far away who looks like Jake’s. At first, you think it’s just a mere coincidence then you pay attention to the licence plate and recognize that it is Jake’s. Instantly, you frown. You don’t understand how he can be there when he told you he wanted to sleep, not to mention the fact this bar is far from his place.
You keep searching for a rational explanation while you go to the bar. Before you walk through the door, you glance at the window and your eyes get teary at what you’re seeing. Jake did lie to you. He is at the bar and far from being tired as he presses his lips on a woman, the same woman at the Hard Deck he swore to you he didn’t know. The world is crumbling down your feet as you’re looking at them kissing passionately and being in each other’s arms. Tears are running down your cheeks and you can’t stop them. You want to go in and insult Jake with every bad word you know yet, the shock is so strong you turn around and go back home, trying to understand what you just saw.
When you close your door, you lean on the wall before sliding down and bursting into tears. You have your head in your hands, totally desperate and angry, not only at Jake but at yourself too. You wonder how you couldn’t see the signs. Now that you think back on it, you realise that, indeed, every element was in front of you : he keeps an emotional distance, he never uses pet names, you’re never his priority and so and so forth. You thought you found someone honest and you feel like a fool as you realise it isn’t the case. You should have listened to Cora, you should have listened to your instinct. You thought you learned your lesson, especially after your relationship with Logan, apparently you still have a long road ahead of you.
Once your sobs calm down, you stand up and throw yourself on your bed, not really taking the time to change your clothes. You stay there, laying on your back, staring at the ceiling, without understanding what’s happening. In the end, you are not the exception. As always. And you never will be. You will never have your love story, your confession of love, your happily ever after.
Your phone notifying you of a new message interrupts your downward spiral. You take it and when you see it’s a text from Jake wishing you a goodnight, you want to answer him with a long paragraph, explaining how much you hate him. However, you don’t have the strength so you delete his number and block him on your social media. You feel lighter but still miserable. You don’t want to see him ever again.
Your wish is not granted. You’ve been able to avoid Jake only for a week. Despite all your efforts, Jake forces the hand of destiny by coming to your workplace. You see him entering the bookshop but you keep working, pretending to be too busy. You don’t even react when he’s in front of you. Your lack of reaction confuses Jake. He expected you to throw yourself in his arms and yet, he is taken aback by your silence.
“Hey, Y/N, it’s me.” he starts with a big smile, “I saw you weren’t answering my texts and I can’t reach you on social either, weirdly, so I got worried. Everything okay ? Are you ignoring me ?”
“I don’t know, did you give me a reason to ignore you ?” you question looking up to him, forcing a smile.
“Huh, no. I mean, I don’t think so.”
“Then no, I’m not ignoring you. You’re such a nice guy, I don’t see why I’d want to ignore you.” you exclaim, ironically.
“Ok, I’ve missed something. Can we talk about it ?”
“I don’t want to talk to you !”
“If you don’t want to talk to me anymore, I think I deserve at least an explanation. I mean, we’ve had something for four months.” Jake demands and this is your last straw.
“In the back shop. Now.”
Because of your authoritative tone, Jake doesn't dare to make an inappropriate comment and follows you while you go to the backshop. Cora looks at you from afar, completely confused by the angry expression on your face - you haven’t told her anything about your discovery, feeling too ashamed.
Once you close the door behind Jake, you cross your arms on your chest and glare at him.
“So, what’s up ?” Jake casually asks.
“I don’t know, you tell me.” you start, trying so hard not to scream, “I thought you were too tired so why were you at the Scented Sky ?”
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
“Don’t try to outwit me ! A week ago, I asked you if you wanted to come to my place to which you gave me the stupid excuse of “I’m too tired to come”. And yet, when I went to the bar, I saw you, in great form.”
At your last sentence, Jake’s eyes widen, panic visible on his face. His brain tries to find a rational explanation however before he can say it to you, you quickly add.
“And do I need to specify you weren’t alone when I saw you ? You were with the woman from the Hard Deck. You know, the same woman you didn’t know at all. And not to mention you were kissing her.”
“I have a good explanation,” he fastly says.
“Oh yeah ? Which one ?”
Jake stares at you and chooses his words carefully before speaking, as if he was in front of a wild animal. He never saw you mad before. He didn’t even think it was possible so he doesn’t know the way you could react if what he says came out wrong.
“She was flirting with me again and before I could react, she kissed me.”
“I just told you I saw and you keep taking me for a fool ?” you retort, shocked by his lie. “You were the one who pressed his lips on hers, your hands were on her hips ! How can you think I’m gonna believe what you’re telling me ? How could you do this to me ? I thought we had something !”
“I…”, he stutters before starting with a calm voice, “Look, I told you I wasn’t ready for a relationship, nothing was official between us and-”
“And I get it !” you cut him off sharply, “But It doesn’t give you the right to make me believe you care about me just for you to go see someone else. You know, if you had told me you weren’t ready for a relationship and you wanted to meet other women at the same time, I would have told you I didn’t want that and we would have called it quits ! You haven’t been honest with me when I’ve given you everything ! You’ve betrayed my trust just like the others.” you sigh, your eyes getting teary.
“I didn’t mean for this to happen. I swear I had the best of intentions.”
“If that is you with the best of intentions then I don’t want to imagine how you’d act if you didn’t care about the person ; you’ve ruined everything. You’ve taken me for an idiot for months and you have no remorse about it ! All I did was defend you, repeat to everyone you were someone nice and you’ve proven to everyone you live up to your reputation and that I am the stupid and desperate woman who only sees the best in the worst guys. Tell me honestly, were you even gonna tell me one day you didn’t want anything serious with me or were you gonna let me guess it by ghosting me ?” you question and Jake doesn’t answer. “Your silence says it all. I can’t believe I could have thought you were good. But, at least, you were useful for something. I had to learn to listen to my instinct when it tells me to walk out from a relationship instead of persisting. Thanks to you, I’ve finally learned my lesson. I hate you, Jake.” you pronounce, staring him right in the eyes. “I don’t want to see you ever again.”
“Y/N, wait-”Jake tries to say.
“No ! Leave and never talk to me again.”
Jake doesn’t add anything and leaves the room without looking back. Once the door is closed, you let your tears run freely down on your cheeks. You sit down, not having enough strength in your legs when the door opens once more, letting in Cora. She doesn’t wait before taking you in her arms. She affectionately strokes your back while you’re sobbing.
“I didn’t know what I was doing. You were right, Cora.”
“I wish I wasn’t.”
“I’m so stupid.”
“He’s the stupid one here, he doesn't know what he’s lost.”
Cora’s words should be comforting and yet, it makes you feel worse. Jake might not know what he’s lost but you sure do know what you’ve lost, time, love, energy and above all, trust. You know you’ll need time to heal from it.
And indeed, you need several months before you can spend a day without thinking about Jake. Now you can finally start to move on. This relationship, though short, has left a trace in your heart, just not like you wished. Since your split-up, you’ve decided to put yourself first instead of waiting for a man to show you his love. You need to understand what you want and what you deserve in a relationship and you can only do that alone. You need to know how to exist and to love without depending on the gaze of a significant other.
For the first time in your life, you are your own priority and you feel good as a single woman. You wouldn’t be against the idea of living your epic love story one day but you are satisfied with your current life. You’re self-sufficient and that is the most beautiful confession of love you could ever have.
