Maiden of the Needle
by Zeroki, Illustrated by Miho Takeoka
Light Novel Volume 01
Shoujo, Fantasy, Reincarnation, Romance, Age-gap, Marriage of Convenience
Story ★★★☆☆ || ★★★☆☆ Art
Summary
Yui Nuir was reincarnated into a noble family of tailors in another world, retaining her memories of her previous life in Japan. Her miserable childhood had just one source of comfort: the fairies she befriended by mending their clothes with her magic. Unfortunately, Yui’s relative lack of skill in blessweaving—the art of enchanting fabric through needlework—ultimately results in her being disowned by her family. But when she’s taken in by a nobleman named Rodin Calostira, the first person to recognize her innate talents, her luck begins to turn around...
Review
This had a pretty cover and was dealing with sewing and I like fashion / clothing / crafting stories. This is another isekai-reincarnation story. A young girl dies and is reincarnated into a magical world, but unfortunately for her her new family is even crueler than her previous one. For the first 15-years Yui is basically neglected and abused, thought to be 'worthless' to her family as she seemed not to possess the magical ability to enchant fabric. It is only her otherworld memories that allow her to survive such abuse, that and the magical fairies that only she seems able to see.
When Yui turns 15 her father sells her to another family and her life takes a turn for the better. She literally goes from hell to paradise, where the people are kind and she feels safe and valued for the first time... she also starts to explore her magical powers... powers she hide from her cruel family... powers that haven't been seen for generations. Her amazing skills instantly make her a target and makes it necessary for her to be protected, so her new master calls his friend, the former King, to ask him to protect her... by marrying her, a marriage of convenience.
I glossed over a lot, but this is the general premise... The book starts off quite depressing, but once she leaves home it becomes more light-hearted and humorous, or typical for the genre. Yui is a normal Japanese girl, but being in this harsh environment for so long has not only emaciated her body, but left her mentally defeated. Yui doesn't lose her kindness, and once she leaves her family home starts to come out of her shell and display some personality. I do like how because of the neglect, her speech and ability to communicate is affected, she isn't as used to this world's language and getting used to speaking and being treated normally takes some getting used to.
Yui is a protagonist that is kind, humble, very special, and is liked / loved by all the 'good' people who met her. This feels like an OP power fantasy from a female perspective. The romance setup is done as a marriage of convenience and has as a large age-gap, the ex-King has a grown son who is the current King, and has been married twice before (both were unhappy marriages). So, basically both are kind, lonely, and understanding and this marriage will eventually turn into true love. The age-gap might bother some, but so far it is being handled as respectfully as possible, no force, and she is aware and okay with the situation. He doesn't expect 'relations' and will even allow her to live her life independently, this marriage is to lend his name and power to protect her from those who might harm her, namely her family.
So far, other than keeping her mentally stable in youth and having some sewing / fashion knowledge it hasn't played much of a role, although that might change as she does meet another reincarnated soul at the first book (seems to be a thing in this world). I do like the magical world so far, the fairies seem to be manifestations of magical power that has some will of their own, the situation between the use and abuse of the fairies is also an interesting story line. So many fairies are dying, thus magic or the connection to it is also dying, because of people abusing them and making contracts with magical beast that seem to be a two-edge sword. So there does seem to be a larger story developing along side the OP power fantasy and romance.

Tasogareiro no Utatsukai 1
Tumblr media
Author: Kei Sazane (Author of Sekai no Owari no Encore and Kimi to Boku no Saigo no Senjou, Arui wa Sekai ga Hajimaru Seisen/Our Last Crusade or the Rise of a New World)
Illustrator: Miho Takeoka (Illustrator of Bungaku Shoujo/Book Girl)
Label: Fujimi Fantasia Bunko
Release Date: 1 January 2007
This is Kei Sazane’s debut series and, more importantly to me, it appears to be the origin of Sazane’s fictional language seen in Sekai no Owari no Encore and plenty of Sazane’s other works. When I first reviewed Encore, I mentioned that I was very curious about the language that was used but that series never really went into it (it was mostly just used for aesthetic purposes, iirc) and I was still curious so I thought that reading Sazane’s debut series was my best bet to finding out more. And it looks like it’ll be a pretty good fantasy series, based off this volume. The world and plot are quite orthodox but it’s interesting and I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes and, of course, I love finding out more about the language. Recommended for fans of fantasy series.
Story:
Genre: Fantasy, Magic school, Action
The series takes place in a world where Song Users exist - people who are able to use special objects called “catalysts” and songs to summon things of a certain colour. Most Song Users specialize in a certain colour and the standard colours are red, blue, yellow, green and white. (so i.e. a white user would be able to summon a pegasus, if they had the right catalyst) The series begins with two Song Users: Ehvemerry, who wants to create a new type of colour and Xins, who wants to master all the colours. The two make a deal that they will meet in the future and show each other that they have met their goals. Time passes and a girl named Kluele, who is training to become a red user, meets a self-proclaimed “night colour” user named Neight.
The worst thing about this volume was probably that the explanations of how the magic system works weren’t really clear and I got confused several times and had to reread some stuff to make sure I understood it and I’m still not sure if I got everything right. The series also doesn’t take many risks and is ultimately an orthodox girl-meets-boy fantasy. I don’t think this necessarily a bad thing but it does mean that it doesn’t stand out over other fantasy series.
(I do want to quickly note that I do not know much about what the light novel market was like in 2007, when this was first published, so it’s possible that what I think of as “orthodox” was not considered as such back then. Still, given that no one really talks about this series anymore, I’d be willing to bet that it didn’t start any long-lasting trends in the fantasy genre.)
This was a pretty interesting first volume and there are several intriguing plot-lines that I’m looking foward to seeing develop, especially with Ehvemerry. The world was interesting and I liked that a lot of the plot in this volume was told from Kluele’s POV, instead of Neight’s. As for the fictional language, I’m having a lot of fun learning more about it. There is furigana provided with the songs that are done in that language and it’s fun to see the patterns in it and learn the words. I’ve always admired authors who are ambitious enough to create their own language and Sazane’s is certainly interesting and I’m looking forward to more of that.
I’m not sure yet if this series is going to have any proper romance in it. Sekai no Owari no Encore didn’t end up having any, despite teasing a few potential pairings. Neight and Kluele could make a good pair but I’m always happy to read series that have male and female leads that stay in a platonic relationship.
Character:
The characters are fairly standard so far, as are their dynamics with each other but they’re likeable enough to follow the story with. So far, Kluele and Ehvemerry have interested me the most and I want to know more about them. I also really liked Arma, a talking “lizard” (acording to Kluele) who accompanies Neight.
Recommended for:
People who like fantasy series and don’t mind if they’re on the orthodox side, as well as people who find fictional languages interesting.
The entirety of this series is up on BookWalker’s Kadokawa subscription service so I plan to finish it.

Tasogareiro no Utatsukai 10 + Final Series Impressions
Tumblr media
Author: Kei Sazane
Illustrator: Miho Takeoka
Label: Fujimi Fantasia Bunko
Release Date: 20 August 2009
Art Notes: I love this cover. It’s such a good final volume cover.
This was a really great and satisfying way to end the series. Unfortunately, that also means that I have very little to say about it. It was the only way that the series could end and it pulled it off perfectly. I really enjoyed it.
There are a few caveats that I feel that I need to warn with regards to this series. The first is that there are A LOT of fantasy terms and it’s hard to keep track of what they all mean and there’s no glossary in the volumes so it can get confusing fast if you’re not paying attention. The second is that while Kluele is awesome, she does tend to get relegated to the damsel in distress role a lot of the time. It’s not too egregious - Kluele does tend to take an active role in saving herself but it can get tiresome. There are some other great female characters, like Ada, that make up for it but I think it’s worth mentioning. And, yeah, due to when this was published there are a couple of outdated ideas about gender that are expressed, especially in volume 6. It doesn’t feel too bad but it is there. There are definitely more issues with the series but these are the ones that I think will really turn people off.
I came into this series not expecting anything - I’d enjoyed Sekai no Owari no Encore well enough but it was kind of plain and I’d heard that this series was even more plain but I ended up getting really invested in the story and the characters by volume 2 and it had completely grabbed my attention by volume 4. Every volume was just so interesting and gripping and it was always hard to stop reading it. I really enjoyed the setting and the fictional language as well. I’m really glad that I decided to give this series I try and I’ll definitely be giving it another read in the future. I recommend it to fans of Kei Sazane and people who want to read a gripping fantasy series with a lot of heart.
This is the third series by Kei Sazane that I’ve read and it’s definitely my favourite. I will be reading more from them in the future but I’m lost as to what series I should start next. I’ll either do it by release date, in which case I’ll be reading Eden next or I’ll choose randomly. I’m a bit hesitant to go with Eden because it’s 13 volumes long but we’ll see.

Bond & Book: The Long, Long Good-Bye of “The Last Bookstore”
By Mizuki Nomura and Miho Takeoka. Released in Japan as “Musubu to Hon: “Saigo no Honyasan” no Nagainagai Owari” by Famitsu Bunko. Released in North America by Yen On. Translated by Nicole Wilder.
If you are reading and enjoying Bond & Book, as well as the author’s prior series Book Girl, then I am going to assume that you are a fan of books. Not just “Oh hey, I like reading” or “I always get the new release of Index when it comes out”, but someone whose entire life is tied up in reading and the titles that have impacted them. Certainly this series is both about and for those people, and while it takes the time to explain the books that it focuses on, there’s a greater depth if you’ve already read the stories in question. Not that I expect too many light novel readers will rush out to buy The Field Guide to Extinct Animals, but certainly The Seagull and The Scarlet Letter are very important to this volume, and being familiar with both stories lends them an added emotional impact. Which is surprising, as the author already knows how to pack quite an emotional punch without the references.
After introducing us to what seemed like our main cast in the previous book, this volume sees Musubu on his own. the reason for that is that he’s gone to a distant town where the bookstores have been shutting down one by one. Only one is left now, and its owner just died in what was seemingly a tragic accident. Now it too is going to close, and Musubu is there to make sure that the books are cared for in their final days there. This irritates Minami, the bookstore’s longest-serving part-timer, who not only felt a close kinship with the former owner but is creeped out by this teen who says that he can talk to books – and they talk back. As the days pass and the closing of the bookstore becomes a major event in the town, will we find out about the owner’s past history and secrets?
Unlike the first volume in the series, this one is more of a novel than a short story collection – in fact, the afterword makes me think the author wrote this one first. It overflows with the love that you can get from reading a beloved book, and how that love can also lead to different things. A couple who loved each other from afar when they were teens reunite years later thanks to The Tomb of the Wild Chrysanthemum. A boy who has become terrified of earthquakes is given a fun series about aliens to read that will calm his mind. And, in the main plotline, an actress and a writer both have ties to this bookstore and its owner, and they’re more than just the Chekhov and Hawthorne stories that wrap around their lives. The ending of the book is incredible, wringing emotions out of you, and making you think that, years from now, maybe Bond and Book will be the series that lodges itself in your heart.
There’s two more volumes out in Japan, and this delights me. I just want to read more from this author, whatever it is. And I want to go back and re-read The Seagull. (Not The Scarlet Letter, though. Sorry, Nomura-san, your work can only take me so far.)
