I was incredibly moved by this match and Kasai’s philosophy that deathmatch wrestling is not about courting death, but about celebrating life.
What a huge moment for El Desperado!

On May 7 at the TakaTaichi Mania 2 event in Korakuen Hall, Desperado suffered a broken jaw during his match with Jun Kasai. Under doctor’s orders, Desperado will be unable to compete.
Flip Gordon was not issued a proper visa in time to enter Japan, and has reluctantly been forced to withdraw from the tournament.
Oh noooooo oh no, poor Despy :(

I was going to try to format this post in an orderly fashion, but my computer and my own energy levels are both malfunctioning, so I won’t. But Despy, having returned to twitter solely for the purposes of promoting his match with Jun Kasai at TakaTaichi Mania 2, had steadfastly avoided mentioning any NJPW interactions. He’s avenging Jun’s actions against Douki, whom he regards as a younger brother, and his feed has primarily consisted of 1) replies to Jun’s tweets, and 2) retweets of announcements for the show.
He’s also periodically talked about being emo (his words! not mine), because he’s El Desperado and that’s how he works, but for the most part, he’s focusing on the show. He doesn’t even follow anyone unrelated - not even the NJPW accounts. All this was fair; he said from the start that this twitter existed to promote the show, and would be deleted afterwards. Sad as it made me, I attempted to accept the fact.
Until suddenly Dragon Lee called him out as the next opponent for the IWGP Junior Heavyweight Championship, and despite his previous attempts to limit his twitter presence and separate it from his NJPW story, he felt the need to respond. Lee and BOSJ, he says, are secondary to his upcoming match. He’s focusing on May 7th and nothing else, and maybe - maybe - he’ll be able to focus on the championship after the fact. This is genuinely significant.
(This post will be a mess once he deletes his twitter and these links are dead, but I have the screencaps. Maybe I’ll add them in later.)
He’s been arguing with Jun over whether the match will be a deathmatch, with Jun saying that any match he’s in automatically becomes a deathmatch, while Despy has emphatically not agreed to stipulations. Still, he has to know he’s in real danger. Jun isn’t going to be polite just because Despy hasn’t agreed to bleed, but this is something he feels he has to do, to defend and avenge his brother.
He’s putting his personal attachments and sense of honor over his own well-being.
In the past, he’d sought out the title at every opportunity, attacking and inserting himself into stories and being desperate for both the acclaim and the attention that came with his few and scattered title shots. Now, he almost brushes off the nomination to challenge, because he can’t focus on anything but his upcoming grudgematch. The title and tournament are less important than avenging Douki, for him.
He’s putting his personal attachments and sense of honor over his chance to win a singles title for the first time in his career.
This is character progression. This is him making decisions that don’t immediately benefit him, because he believes they’re morally the right thing to do, not just expedient or serving the faction. Avenging Douki matters more to him than being champion, more than staying alive, and while, yes, he’s a depressed luchador who would die for anything, he’s making it mean something in this case.
He’s very good at this, and I very much admire his work, and I’ll be sad when Jun kills him before he can be champion.
