Colección de ensayos que formaban parte de la columna del mismo nombre que Serna mantuvo en muy diversas publicaciones durante varios años. Cubren toda clase de aspectos sociales concernientes al México de finales del siglo XX y principios del XXI, mas un poco de cultura general. Según aclara el propio Serna, se trata de breves reflexiones escritas con el ánimo festivo y chocarrero del espectador que asiste a una carpa.

Y es que cubren todo lo concerniente a la evolución (o, a ojos de Serna, degradación) de las cantinas de ficheras en tabledances. Las muy diversas subculturas urbanas. Varios asuntos concernientes al amplio espectro de la sexualidad y el lenguaje. Toda clase de reglas de comportamiento y sus más extraños absurdos. Reflexiones sobre la cultura pop —la música, el cine, la televisión y el arte en general. La política y las clases económicas. ¡Y mucho más!

Por un lado partícipe de tantos y muy interesantes cronistas mexicanos como habrían sido Salvador Novo y Carlos Monsiváis (otro poco de José Joaquín Blanco, de Jorge Ibargüengoitia), por el otro fiel a su propio lado satirista que ha demostrado sobre todo en sus colecciones de cuentos (Amores de segunda mano; El orgasmógrafo; La ternura caníbal; Lealtad al fantasma) o en otras colecciones de ensayos (Las caricaturas me hacen llorar), Serna es siempre provocador y sardónico. Sus provocaciones, como no, a veces incitan a la reflexión y a veces se quedan cortas. Ni modo, el futuro no siempre se puede predecir.

Pero lo que sí se puede hacer es analizar el presente —y en este caso, leyendo el libro del 2008 unos catorce años después, notar qué ha cambiado, qué no, e inclusive qué ha empeorado. Humor que invita a la reflexión, chispazos necesarios para vivir. Vale mucho la pena su lectura.
