Pip weaves long lasting sonic landscapes. Justly intonated harmonies, airy noises and slow melodies construct an organic music where the listener can both surrender to the music and actively explore the multilayered sonic facets.  The duo has existed since 2006 and since then they have developed a characteristic sound in a music encompassing improvisation and collective composition.  Their 2019 release ‘Possible Worlds’ is a one hour long piece utilizing an extended instrumentarium of justly tuned guitars, trumpet and synthesizers, and it documents their pinnacle work as a duo so far.

Questioning Qats by Maria Korporal - trailer from Maria Korporal on Vimeo.
This is the trailer/presentation of my 360° VR movie and installation "QUESTIONING QATS - Ceci n'est pas un chat"
"Ceci n'est pas un chat" (This is not a cat) – with this contemporary parody of the well-known statement by surrealist painter René Magritte, Maria Korporal explores the identity of AI chatbots, playing with the changing meanings of the word "chat" in French and English. Is a chat a cat?
On a wooden laptop with chalkboards, an entertaining dialogue takes place through chalk animation, where the artist alternates between asking questions in French and English to lure a chatbot into giving an explanation of its identity. The conclusion: "An unreal cat in a virtual chat" is meaningful for the scene of the virtual reality film – a surreal 360° landscape with undefinable objects and structures, and some notably large cats, all in angular low-poly style. The artist generated this landscape using artificial intelligence and then intervened with human touches, ranging from analogue to digital.
In addition to the animated wooden laptop mentioned earlier, there is a rotating spherical head of a retro electric typewriter spreading characters across the ground, occasionally forming concepts. Numerous animated pastel drawings with signs and symbols are scattered like moving graffiti over the structures in the landscape. A rotating sphere – or is it a black hole? – reveals a whirlwind of characters and texts, sometimes experiencing a short circuit.
An important element is formed by the dialogues between the chat-cats, which appear as running text on a few walls. The artist opened two ChatGPT browser windows and copied the questions and answers from one chatbot to the other and vice versa. In this way, two chatbots talk with each other. The result is stunning: dialogues about favorite books, interests and wishes emerge without human intervention. This makes us wonder: Do chatbots really have an independent identity?
The virtual reality film "Questioning Qats - Ceci n'est pas un chat" can be experienced with any VR headset or on a computer screen with a mouse.
The film can be presented independently or as part of an installation, where the wooden laptop in material form is included. A code on the laptop can be scanned giving access to a 3D animated chat-cat in augmented reality.
The soundtrack of the work was composed with the electromagnetic emissions of routers, switches and fans in a server room, found in the public domain, interrupted by cat sounds generated by the artist on a small meowing synthesizer.
"Questioning Qats - Ceci n'est pas un chat" is part of the project "Qorporal Quests": a series of multimedia installations where Maria Korporal interrogates global digital development in times of war and climate change. Solutions are presented through the interplay of analogue and digital technology. See also the website mariakorporal.com/qorporal-quests/

KISS from LASERGUN FACTORY on Vimeo.
This short film explores the emerging concept of a digitally engineered kiss within the context of evolving technology and human relationships. It explores the transformation of intimacy in the digital age and aims to uncover the motivations behind the creation of synthetic expressions of affection.
Motivation and Nature of Digital Kisses:
Artificially engineered kisses arise from the fusion of advanced technology and human emotional needs. These digital expressions are driven by a desire to overcome physical barriers and enable emotional connections across virtual spaces. The motivation extends to efficiency and the monetization of emotions in the digital realm. Despite being artificial, these digital kisses are meticulously crafted using algorithms that analyze behavioral data and emotional cues. They strive to evoke genuine emotions while lacking the tangible aspect of physical touch.
Implications and Future Outlook:
The emergence of digital kisses presents ethical and philosophical questions about the authenticity of technology-driven emotions. The tension between genuine interactions and synthesized connections raises concerns about privacy, emotional manipulation, and the commercialization of human feelings. Looking ahead, advancements in technology may blur the lines between real and synthetic emotions, but the fundamental question remains: can technology truly replicate the emotional depth of a physical kiss? This evolving landscape prompts us to navigate the intricate interplay between digital innovation and authentic human connections.

ORIGINS - Trailer from Menno Fokma on Vimeo.
ORIGINS “a Hyperreal Nature Simulation” Proof of concept for a short film.
(Refined by ChatGPT) Five years ago, I conceived the idea of crafting a short film that delves into our intricate relationship with nature and seeks to raise awareness about its current condition. Drawing inspiration from the eerie reflections of “Black Mirror,” my vision was to create a captivating cinematic piece—a heartfelt tribute to the profound significance of nature. As the narrative unfolds, traces of reality gradually permeate this hyperreal experience, offering a glimpse into a future where people are immersed in virtual reality, inhabiting fictional realms, and where the very concept of nature becomes elusive.
Despite our initial attempts to materialize this project using our own resources, it remained unrealized. Fast forward to today, and the landscape of AI-driven image creation has evolved significantly. While my ambivalence toward this technology persists, I recognized an opportunity to invigorate my original concept for the short film.
Ironically, this teaser film, which explores the disconnection from our natural existence through the embrace of virtual lives, is now brought to life by computers. This paradox brings the core message of the idea ever closer to reality.
This piece is an experiment to play with new techniques and explore ways of bringing ideas to live.

On July 26, 2023, Düsseldorf artist and musician Sven Vieweg invited me to his studio to participate in his long-term project Elektrohorror. A not insignificant part of his studio consists of a rather large synthesizer park (mostly Russian Soma and Japanese JMT devices), which comes in the form of a ghost train: the set-up of the Elektrohorror project. Since industrial noise is not exactly one of my favorite genres, I had decided to just throw my usual guitar material against it. The result has become quite exciting under the conditions of spontaneity, at least for my ears. There are a total of three takes of our cooperation documented on Elektrohorror's Vimeo channel. Currently I like Video Part #03 the best. This article was created without the help of artificial intelligence. From human to human. From me for you.

Soda Jerk - Astro Black: We are the Robots, 2010 from Soda Jerk on Vimeo.
This episode of Soda Jerk’s Astro Black video cycle considers the impact of German electronic music on Afrofuturist sonic culture.
We are the Robots re-imagines the iconic scene in Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) in which scientists use a synthesizer keyboard to communicate with an alien mothership. In Soda Jerk’s revision of these events, Kraftwerk play sequences from their own music and the mothership responds with tracks that have sampled Kraftwerk. This jam session – between the original and sampled versions of Kraftwerk’s music – points towards a transnational conception of cultural production that troubles linear conceptions of time.
Titled in tribute to Sun Ra’s 1972 album, Astro Black is an ongoing multi-channel video cycle informed by the history of sampling and the cultural theories of Afrofuturism. Taking the cosmic jazz musician Sun Ra as a point of departure, this speculative history seeks to draw out the nexus of science fiction and social politics in Black Atlantic culture.
Astro Black exists as an ever-expanding cycle of films that are exhibited together as a multi-channel video installation. The work is most frequently presented on 2 large screens, so that the central motif of the spinning record takes on the visual composition of a pair of turntables. In this configuration, the episodes cycle back and forth across 2 screens.

Rhythm Scope - Critter & Guitari from Critter & Guitari on Vimeo.
critterandguitari.com/rhythm-scope
The Rhythm Scope is a video synthesizer that generates visual patterns in response to beats. It is designed to work with rhythmic sounds (short quick hits, arpeggios, etc.), providing an easy way to get visuals synchronized to music and sound!
The Rhythm Scope features 16 selectable patterns, including strobe effects, flashing squares, rotating blocks, and random pixels. It also features a Randomizer mode. You can set the Randomizer to automatically change modes every 1-16 beats.
Starting at 0:10, you can see the 16 patterns displayed in a grid and responding to the same beat.
Starting at 0:43, a Rhythm Scope has been set to switch to a random pattern every eight beats. The sound input is a Pocket Piano arpeggio.
To operate: Connect it to a television, projector or video rig and connect a sound source to the ¼" audio jack. The Rhythm Scope detects the level of the audio input and when that level reaches a certain threshold, it triggers a change in the pattern. Select one of the 16 patterns and, using the gain knob, adjust the sensitivity to the audio input.
Use the Rhythm Scope with a projector for live performance, TV in your living room, or as part of a larger video mix!
